Am convinced she is an incompetent teacher. I'm a 4.0 student and was immediately disappointed in her teaching style. Notes are lackluster fill-in-the-blank worksheets with little/no explanation. Bizarre unprofessional sense of humor, grades VERY strictly on grammar and spelling in lab reports, yet her notes are riddled with careless errors.
Professor seeks to provide a challenging course to prepare students for upper level undergraduate work at their transfer colleges. Have learned a lot about lab methods thanks to her demanding lab report style. Now proceeding to a Masters program, and her class is one of the courses I've taken that make me confident I'll succeed.
Highly recommend avoiding this class at all costs. Her class requires endless studying since she feels she isn't obliged to do much. Very rude & unhelpful!
she is very unhelpful and her lectures are the most useless lectures notes i have ever encountered. i recommend avoiding this teacher as much as possible. she is very old in cypress college so she has her job guaranteed and she will not get fired no matter what and therefore does as little as she can. she also does not dress properly to the class
If you are willing to have strong fundamental knowledge in chemistry, I recommend you take another professor. I couldn't understand her fill-in the blank notes
Even if you're taking the class to get over it then also she would be the worst one to take. Chemistry 107 is the base to the future chem classes and she teaches horrible. I went in the first day and the whole class was completely lost. I would say choose better one than taking her cause if you take her then its complete self study from textbook.
This class is hard, thats all I can say. Shes very helpful and in my opinion, she didnt graded that hard compare to other professors. Class workloads are heavy with endless homework, reading, lab reports; but youre in high level of chem, what do you expected? She always encourage students to work harder, expecially once you get to know her more
This class is definitely hard if you want to get a good grade you will have to put some effort into studying and practicing and practicing. Make sure you do all the required/optional homework and do even more to get your concepts, because it builds up. Do all the side questions in the textbook and end of chapter, they help a lot!
Biochemistry? Chemistry major? If so, OChem is an essential class for all of us. It is a hard course but doable. Professor De Roo is a great Professor. Her explanations are clear. She points out the most important concepts which are needed for the second courses. Her lab is easy. Just read and spend time for the class, you will get it easily.
Walked in Professor De Roos class with lots of pressure (because of all the negative feedback from Rate My Professor). Walked out of her class with tons of confidence about my Ochem knowledge, lab skills, and a great gratefulness for her. There was no way to digest the Ochem concepts without reading the book and do hw. She was born to teach Ochem.
Professor De Roo had the perfect way to make my brain work harder: reading the book many times, doing homework, writing lab reports. But who masters Ochem concepts without doing these??? She prepared me well for my upper-level courses and I can't thank her enough for that. She has the easiest lab ever. I guarantee!!!
Ochem in general is hard, but the professor definitely makes it learnable. During lecture, she will point out all the important steps and tell you exactly what she is looking for. Also, she lets you use the molecular models during quizzes and exams, which is extremely helpful! As long as you put in the work and read, youll do well in this class.
Ask professor De Roo for help as soon as you hit a wall. She is always available to help out. She understands some people need extra time to run the experiments - makes the lab much easier. The notes should be a supplement (don't neglect) but not a replacement of textbook. My ochem was solid for university upper div classes and standardized exam.
This subject is hard but do-able! There is a lot of reading, studying, and working on a bunch of practice problems. It may seem tedious at first but it definitely pays off when it all comes together. Also, if there are any questions, she is easily found during office hours or in the lab.
Prof. Roo may seem overwhelming at first, but once you get used to her teaching style, you will learn a lot out of it. She's the down-to-Earth professor who brings cookies to class and is willing to answer questions. Her office hours are right after lab, so you get more time to finish lab if you're a slowpoke like me.
I understand the frustration some students express, I had similar ideas initially. This course is the shell shock for developing better study habits. De Roo has high expectations, it's up to you to put in the work. You won't pass this class by cruising and doing the minimum. Regardless, she is very kind and cares for students that care to learn.
O Chem is a challenging subject to understand & it requires lots of reading and practicing. If you are a STEM major who need to take this course, expect to develop your own study habits & don't just wait for the prof. to map out for you as your classes are only getting harder from here. I took 2 semesters with prof. De Roo & I improve as a student.
really really good professor. I took her for chem107 and she really prepared me for chem111a. she makes you do so many problems and it's a pain but she knows it's the best way to learn the concepts.
If you haven't taken any other Chem classes before don't take her during the summer. Gave printouts of the chapter for notes and gave lots of practice worksheets. She's very meticulous about grading labs so make sure you have everything perfect. She's very weird and is loud for no reason but you get used to her. cheatsheets on quizzes and tests.
Professor De Roo had only fill in the blank notes and did not explain anything. When asking about a problem, she would direct you to other students and not explain anything at all. Definitely would be my last option.
She is rude and unhelpful. She yelled at a student for asking for a refresher on Gen Chem 1. She later gave a back handed apology. I also overheard her talking to another professor about how incompetent another student was and how she thinks they wont make it in chemistry. She doesnt care about her students. I would not recommend her to anyone.
chem 111b is not easy, but it will become much easier for you if you take her class compared to others. She is very patient and super nice, always trying her best to help you out. she is an easy grader . as long as you read book, study lecture note, and do homework, you have enough material to get A.
When asked a question, she often cuts off the student before the full question is asked. There were times during the semester where she was unable to answer certain course-related questions about the material. I do not recommend this class unless you are good at self-teaching from the textbook. She does not teach, just reads from lecture notes.
She reads from her fill-in-the-blanks notes. I was able to understand the materials she was teaching, but I know for some students it was rough. Reading txtbk helps, but I barely used it. Labs every week online. 40Qs on mcGraw. That was not funny at all. She makes a good amnt of mistakes so try to pay attention to her work. Overall, she isnt bad.
Professor De Roo is a wonderful person and truly cares for her students. I took her for CHEM111B, and chemistry is not exactly my strong suit. I ended the course with an A, but you definitely need to put in the work to receive that grade. However, Prof. De Roo grants you all the chances and opportunities to perform well. I recommend taking her!!
Professor De Roo hands out fill-in study guide for each chapter and teaches from it. She also gives homework that is relates to what you need to learn. She responded to questions by email in good time. The tutoring center has former students from her class and this also helps if you have any homework questions. I found her caring and very helpful.
Deroo cares that you learn. Goes through problems step by step. Patient, shows how to do the math, answers questions. Was respectful of students, yes, lots of homework but that is how you learn. Available during office hours, lots of one on one help. Do not believe everything you read on here. Highly recommend to take for chemistry. Best ever!
Gives hand out study guides. I used those to get ready for exams. Helpful, explained when I didn't understand. Did lots of problems in class. Understands that chemistry is hard. Great professor. I would take her again for sure. Makes class easier to understand, patient. Was always helpful. Recommend to take.
Thank you De Roo for all your help. Got into PA school. If you ever need anything, just let me know. Recommend you take her.
Deroo is great! My friend told me to take her. Now I tell everyone to take her. She helps you. Chemistry is hard but she listen and encourage you. I am so glad that I took her. She give out notes and tell you how to study for tests. She answer email fast.
Lectures are clear. She will help you if you reach out. She is one of the best teachers I have taken at Cypress College. You will learn a lot. She does not belittle you when you asks questions and encourages you to ask them. Highly recommend.
De Roo will help you during office hours and will zoom with you. She will explain how to do the calculations and get you ready for ochem. Lectures were very helpful. Gives xtra credit, . I like her a lot. She makes class easier. Gives out study guides.
Professor De Roo is a great professor that helps students as much as she can. She doesnt only teach her students but she also really care for them. I loved having her as my chem teacher, and she is nice and funny. I would take her again .
Rude and insensitive professor. I did well in this class because I knew the information prior to entering. However, I did not like how she treated others who were struggling with her course. There are other teachers who can teach this course better and are respectful to you when you're struggling. You're not missing out if you don't take her.
For the sake of your emotional well being, DONT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. Yes, the subject can be difficult, however her attitude towards students is an unnecessary stressor you dont need in your life.
Thoughtful, kind, respectful professor. Helps all students, especially those who struggle. Will write out each step on whiteboard and make sure that you understand. Recommend highly. Cares that you learn and prepares you for MCAT, ochem, GRE. Appreciate time she spends to help students.
Pleasant, respectful, caring. Wants students to succeed. Take her, she will help you. Highly recommend.
De Roo made my brain work harder and will prepare you for upper level courses. Take this professor if you can.
Really, really good professor. She is very kind. Deroo is very helpful. She cares that you learn and gives insight. She helps struggling students. Always ready to help.
Professor De Roo is a great professor. She really cares that you learn and prepares you for ochem and graduate school. TAKE HER! Polite and kind, knows that you have a lot going on in your life and helps you as much as she can.
Professor De Roo is very kind-hearted and patient. She does a good job helping you understand the concepts. Seriously the best professor. She is on your side. Take her if you can!
Loved taking her class!! She taught us well. If she taught all chem courses I would definitely major in chem. Shes excellent. Professor De Roo walks her class thru the calculations in both lecture and lab. She is on your side!! Patient and kind.
Deroo will help you if you reach out. Take her if you can. Hard class but she helps you a lot. Lots of practice problems but that is how you learn. Made chemistry fun and enjoyable. Gives extra credit and allows cheat sheets on exams. She was super helpful.
De Roo cares for her class well being. Allows cheat sheets on exams!!! You will learn. She is super helpful and will adapt based on your needs. Gives out study guide. You can repeat homework problems until you get them right. Respects students. Recommend you take her if you can.
Highly recommend taking Professor DeRoo, I was scared I wouldn't pass the class as I struggles with Chem101, but she made it easy to understand chemistry. She genuinely cares about her student's success. She lets you know clearly what will be on the test, lets you use cheatsheets, gives extra credit, and ensures you understand the curriculum.
De Roo was so kind and understanding. Turn in your lab reports, they are easy points even though they take time. Lot's of homework, but that is how you learn. She is always willing to help. She does not make you feel stupid for asking questions.
Professor De Roo hold study hours via zoom: easy to attend. She goes through each problem you need help with. She gives extra credit and allows cheat sheets. She tells you what to study. Very inspirational. Kind and thought full. You will pass if you learn the study guides she gives out. Very organized lectures. Would take again.
You get to use cheatsheets!!! I made sure that I used the study guides and went over the problems until I understood. Did all the lab reports and got those points. Watched the videos in canvas. Spent time to make sure I could do the problems and did the extra credit. Did all the online homework. Just ask and she will help you.
Great prof!!! You get study guides: use them and you will be fine. Very kind and caring. Answers questions if you ask. Will help you as much as possible. Recommend to take!!!!!!!!!
I would gladly take prof De Roo for any chemistry course. She is really positive but realistic about her expectations. She made her lecture fun and entertaining while providing a clear foundation. Cheat sheets for exams and quizzes. Extra credit. She is kind and caring.
Recommend to take. Kind and caring. Patient when you need help. Will answer your questions and help you a lot. Wants you to succeed in your goals. Do all the lab reports carefully to get all those points.
She was very understanding. You can pass if you study your study guide. Just do the homeworks. Ms D is caring , kind and helpful. She want you to succeed. RECOMMEND TO TAKE!!!
If you understand the online homeworks, you will do fine. Do the practice problems, use the study guides. She was super clear when teaching. Cheat sheets and extra credit. Do all the lab work. She responds and updates canvas quickly. Recommend to take.
Professor De Roo helped me prepare for my future endeavors as a STEM major. The analogies that she uses to explain difficult concepts makes the information far more digestible. In this class, you are graded primarily off you exam and quiz scores. Labs are also important, and you should try your best not to lose any points on them. Great teacher!!!!
Take this professor! Very organized. Canvas very good. Due dates reasonable and all on canvas. Homework from back of book so you can buy used book. She explain lectures very good. Kind and caring and wants you to do well. Extra credit and cheat sheets. Recommend to take.
Ms D helps you when you ask questions. Explains concepts and helps you to study MC for exams. Tells you what to be careful on (UNITS!). Cheat sheets help. Be sure to ask questions during class and pay attention. She really cares about her students and wants you to succeed. Organized, everything you need is on canvas. Recommend to take.
DeRoo will help you if you ask. Use the study guides and you will be fine for quizzes. She cares about her students. Do the lab and get the points. Extra credit and homework points help.
I feel like its pretty obvious that the recommend to take reviews are from the same person. The study guides dont help AT ALL for the quizzes and exams, the questions on those are completely different and even stuff we werent even taught. Only 1 extra credit assignment and clearly doesnt care about her students. Im super upset i wasted my time
Copy Paste slideshow lectures filled with mistakes. Claims that all you need to do is use the Study Guide notes but the test questions are different? She is also an extremely strict grader and it feels like she is trying to win. Not to mention rude. She likes to yell and berate so if you like that take this class. Bad experience. Not take again
This professor communicates with all of her students and ensures that they are prepared before all the exams. Students are allowed to bring one cheat sheet per exam. 10 points of Extra credit is provided at the end of the semester. As long as you complete the labs and homework, students receive full points. I recommend taking her CHEM 111B Course!
CHEM 111B is a challenging course, but no need to memorize bc we can use a cheat sheet on both sides. During quizzes, prof gives us 1-2 problems to work on for an hour to encourage careful thinking and double-checking. Usually quizzes are straightforward, and if you have studied and practiced the problems, you can finish them in 10-20 minutes.
At this level of a STEM course, you need to put extra time and efforts. If you study the study guides and textbook, you will get good grades on exams. HW assignments are a bit lengthy, but completing them earns full credit, which boosts the overall grade. One easy extra credit assignment available, which can increase your overall grade by 1-2%
Lab reports are graded strictly, but it does get easier with time and experience, and prof often provides sample calculation sheets. By carefully reading and following instructions, you can secure full credits on your lab reports. If you have any problems, go talk to her and she will make an effort to provide guidance and support in your situation.
If you want any to have no life and neglect all your other classes only to get a bad grade, then by all means, take this class.
Extremely difficult exams. Study guides are completely different from exams. The professor is not useful or knowledgeable when you ask for help. Do not recommend that anyone out themselves through this.
"Notes" on a word document but difficult to navigate thru since they're very unorganized. Doesn't work thru the problems w you. Homework problems take hours to finish and don't help at all. Unprofessional and disappointing.
Professor provides a challenging course. You will learn a lot about lab methods. Shes very helpful and cares about students. She want students to do well.
Take Professor De Roo! She genuinely cares about her students and wants us all to succeed! She provides feedback on assignments so that you know which parts you nailed or what to improve on for next time. Overall, I learned so much from her and this course! If I needed another chem course, I would definitely take it from Professor De Roo again!
Ask questions, Deroo will help you. Practice the problems on the study guide and make a good cheat sheet. Chemistry is just hard, but you can do it if you try.
She's really nice!!! When you need help...she will try to help you!!! This class is not easy..depending on how hard you are willing to work in her class. I recommend her though.
Go to office hours, she will help you. Ask questions. Study lecture notes and you will pass.
Barely passed this class despite neglecting my other classes & spending every minute of every hour of every day on this class doing the lab reports/hw and attempting 2 study for her pHD level quizzes/exams. This class and the professor was honestly the worst I've ever had. I tried so hard with her and to do well this class. You can't & wont win.
At first, she's different than any professor you've probably had. But she is such a wonderful person once you get to know her better. She really helps you get it. If you don't, keep telling her, she will explain it in different ways. Grades very well, gives credit for trying. 8 1/2 by 11 cheat sheets for all exams! You HAVE to read the book!!!!!
She simplifies difficult concepts and as long as you review & study her slides you'll do great on her exams/quizzes! She wants to help her students, so don't be afraid to ask questions. Go to tutoring for help with lab. I think spring 2024 will be her last semester of teaching, so take her before then!!
If you want to get a good grade you will have to put some effort into studying and practicing and practicing. Make sure you do all the required homework and do even more to get your concepts, because it builds up. Do all the side questions in the textbook and end of chapter, they help a lot! Ask questions!
She is understanding and cares enough to ensure you pass this class. While quizzes have no cheat sheets, she allows one page for exams and two for each final exam (there are 2). There is one easy extra credit opportunity and the homework can feel like busy work, but she's flexible. There is a poster assignment, but she accepts digital works.
Glad I was able to work with professor De Roo when life got in the way. She was very accommodating. Instructions were clear, make sure you read them and you will do fine.
I had Professor De Roo this Spring 2024, and it was my best experience in a chemistry classroom. I retook CHEM111B and did much better this semester thanks to her structure and thorough lectures. Her videos helped me review for each exam, and she truly cares for her students and is passionate about chemistry. I became more disciplined in her class.
Professor does not teach at all, just projects word document notes to copy down and notes are incorrect occasionally. Quizzes are based on lecture problems. Exams require textbook reading for mcq, but she never mentions that. Pretty rude at first but slowly gets nicer. Makes you stay entire lab period. Thankfully she is retiring.
This Professor is by far the best online teacher I have ever had. She made sure to get her grading done on time while also providing feedback on assignments if you got something wrong or did something well! 100% would take again, if you are wondering if you can trust this teacher through ratemyprofessor, you can 100000%!
Honestly it's surprising that this person is trusted to teach the youth and our future. I am disappointed that the school has not exposed her inability to teach effectively. office hours after tests only and doesn't help in any way. You will regret even asking for help because the she will tell you instead about her weird son and neighbor problems.
I was hesitant to take an online course, but it was organized, easy to navigate and fun. Ms D got back fast via email, was understanding when life got in the way. Professional and kind.
A lot of material to learn, however ms d made lecture fun and entertaining while providing a clear foundation. Be prepared to study. Very respectable grader and she is always willing to help.
