All-around good teacher for material. Good explanations and organized lectures. Although the class encourages new ideas for papers and tests, they are graded more on how well you repeat the material that is taught. Has a tendency to make political statements when they are not warranted.
Good professor, knows alot, conveys the material well. Makes it interesting.
This class was amazing - she is a great professor. She makes lectures interesting and she is very excited about the subject matter. My favorite prof. so far at Cal - the tests/essays are fair. I enjoyed this class a lot, I recommend it.
She is one of the best professors I've had. Her lectures are just about as good as you can get! Her passion is inspiring and she gave the most amazing closing lecture. Lots of reading for the class, but all is interesting and not too difficult. I would definitely recommend this class!
Very, very good professor. She is clear, not always concise, but that's good in this case since she tells great stories of history during lecture. She keeps you interested with her enthusiasm. Definitely take this course if you can!
professor einhorn is fabulous, she is the most wonderful teacher in the world. she is vivacious and great... take any class with her and you will be grateful
tons of reading in addition to mostly unrelated lectures, lecture attendance is important, very enthusiastic and animated, lectures are like stories, makes things clear, tests are reasonable and cover major points, encourages integration of details and larger themes
Really enthusiastic, amiable professor. There is a lot of reading, but if you enjoy reading, then it's a breeze. (Some of the readings were captivating.) Essays are graded fairly and the midterm and final were reasonable. Enjoyed it immensely. Made me consider being a history major.
Great teacher! She's funny and enthusiastic. Take one of her classes if you can. There's a lot of reading, but it's not too bad.
Excellent professor, learned a lot
Never have to read the text book! Midterm and final are manageable enough. Papers are pretty good, but it just depends on your GSI. best professor ive had at cal. go for it! breadth and an AC, can't lose with this androgenous professor. eaisest lecture to understand at cal.
Prof Einhorn delivers informative lectures when she is not interjecting her own personal bias. Luckily, this didn't happen as often with Einhorn as is commonplace on this campus. The only serious issue I took was with her final lecture, in which she threw around baseless claims as matters of fact.
Very clear, concise, and fairly easy. Heavy reading, but one can honestly get by reading very little. Don't buy the textbook! Everything is about lecture, and lecture is the eaisest thing to take notes, cause she has an outline and sticks to it. Great professor!
while I personally wasn't as into her lectures, I appreciated her enthusiasm and effort in preparing them. the textbook isn't very useful for the most part, and your GSI determines your grade. overall, after finishing the Revolutionary War, the course was all about slavery.

great lecturer
An awesome teacher with an amazing amount of enthusiasm.
HOT HOT HOT!!
very interesting lectures, a lot because of her passion for the subject. definitely recommmend the class. kinda hard, depending on who your gsi is, there's a lot of variance between the gsi grading
Very enthusiastic lecturer, she can even bring me to full attention when I didnt get enough sleep with her jokes and such. The class is a history channel & first hand experience style. Lecture is like the history channel, just takes notes that enough to know the material. The extra stuff is reading first hand accounts of history. Good prof.
Very clear, everything in outline form. Good lecturer- lecture is more important than readings. Easy for Hist. dept. Sometimes has weird passive-aggresive moments. But v. focused and good at giving main points. Rec. for student who have never taken a history class before.
Loved this class. Made me a history major. It wasn't easy--there was a lot of reading and 2 fairly lengthy papers but the material was presented clearly even she did speak quickly. She was passionate about the subject and kept me awake quite easily. I highly recommend this class if you're considering history--she'll make a believer of you.
Best professir I've ever had! Lectures are clear and strict to the point. Einhorn is very enthusianstic which makes you interested. Definitely, take this class and don't even buy the textbook. Her awsome lectures is all you need.
She was an amazing teacher and lecturer! Anyone who is considering a history class, take one with her!
Really good teacher.
Very passionate about what she teaches, easy going class, readings aren't that important as long as you contribute to discussion
Has the amazing ability to put difficult subjects and events in a light which students can readily understand and actually appreciate. Enjoyable class, but beware, not too easy when it comes to section and GSI's.
GREAT PROFESSOR!!! Very enthusiastic and passionate which makes her lectures great, and very dedicated to encouraging her students to do well in class and life. Lectures and reading can be kinda overwhelming sometimes, but as long as you take okay notes in lectures, the exams aren't that bad and are pretty fair.
Interesting lectures, but not entirely comprehensive of the time period, focused too much on native americans and slavery which eclipised other interesting issues like foreign policy of the time period.
Excellent lecturer. A very narrow view of US history, but what she covered was incredibly detailed and engrossing. Only two essays and two exams make it difficult to save your grade by the end, so don't work on the essays last-minute like I did. (Or take it P/NP)
Very engaging & enthusiastic professor! Grading on papers tough but fair. Students who say class focused too much on slavery & Native Americans must not realize that each course has a focus- this class, focus was that America was built on the backs of slave labor & by aggressively taking land from Native Americans- huge part of our history, folks!
Enthusiastic lecturer! I don't blame her for scolding the students who rudely left the class early & read the newspaper in class. If you're going to leave early, be respectful & tell her in advance or don't show up to class at all! This is college people- be adults. Grading is very fair if you do all the work.
Twitchy, hyperactive, weirdly passive-aggressive. Energetic, entertaining lecturer. Very knowledgeable. Harsh grader. You will at least learn some American history in her courses, but I'm not sure you'd want her for a mentor or advisor. Lousy TAs, too.
She's easily one of the best lecturers at the entire university. Her lectures were extremely entertaining and she knows a ridiculous amount of about American history. Hist 7A w/ her isn't the easiest course, but its a very enjoyable one. Some people were simply born with an ability to teach, and Robin Einhorn is one of those people.
AMAZING PROFESSOR! She turned the most boring topic in American history to extremely lively pictures that even the most disinterested person has to appreciate. Her unparallel teaching ability produced tremendous inspiration in each and every student. She encouraged her students not to just learn history but to make history for themselves.
Loved this prof! What's the person below talking about re. her being passive-aggresive (they must have gotten a bad grade- class isn't hard unless you're lazy). My problem wasn't with the prof. but w/the rude & tacky students who came to class late constantly & put their feet with flip flops on the chair in front of them. Its class, not a barn!
best thing to happen to American history since the Erie canal.
She's a good lecturer, no doubt about that. But in person she's very rude. I went to see her during office hours a few times and she always acted like an ill-mannered jerk. Two friends had the same experience. PS, it's true what was said below about Cal students, they're really rude & tacky. Rude students, rude professors...that's Cal for you!
i agree with the person below me. its true...she has the worst attitude of any professor. never go to her office hours. i had the same experience. she is really pissy and scary. but then again, the students were pretty rude. all in all, she is a good professor if you dont like to interact with the professors but simply learn the material.
Professor Einhorn is absolutely amazing. Her lectures left me amazed and inspired. I loved going to each lecture and I never got bored. She is fast paced and high energy. I went to see her in office hours and she was very helpful. I highly, highly recommend this class. It has been my favorite so far at Cal.
Her excitement is contagious. Her lecture-style is refreshingly vibrant (what with all the yelling and running around the room), yet organized. Obviously quite knowledgeable, yet very approachable. I was never bored and always intrigued in her lectures, and I tend to dislike history. She's also very helpful with any questions about assignments.
She's so terrific. Her lectures are always so vibrant and ridiculously entertaining. Everyone should at least take one of her class during their stay at Berkeley to really experience a great lecture. =)
One of the best professors at Cal. Her enthusiasm is contagious and her lectures, while fast faced, are easy to follow. There's a lot of reading, but it's interesting and relevant. I had a good GSI which helped a lot. Einhorn is the reason I became a hisory major.
Her lectures are amazing! I was totally captivated from the moment class began until it ended. Students clapped at the end of some of her lectures. She covers a lot of material in lecture and goes very quickly=lots of notes each class. However, she is clear, concise and if you take good notes you will be fine. Best lecturer so far at Cal!!
She is insane, but in a good way. Very enthusiastic in her lectures, which are always coherent. She is a bit scary though, so if you try to leave lecture early be prepared for her to call you on it to the point of her flying across the lecture hall and pulling you back to your seat (not really, but she really wants you to stay the hole time)...
Very engaging lectures, the midterm and finals are based almost entirely off of lecture, so take good notes. The tests are fair and usually easy but the essays are a pain, do well because they're worth quite a bit.
Fantastic lecturer who is high energy, funny, and can make the most boring part of US History enjoyable. I'm not a history person, but I learned A TON in her class. I never went to her OH, but based on her lecturing, she may be one of the best in the school.
Good class. There's just a lot of information to study for the tests.
The Professor was extremely energetic while lecturing and rather funny (which is always a good thing when the class is US history). However, some lectures did seem to drag on a bit. The class overall was pretty easy, you don't even have to read/buy the main text book as her lectures basically sum up the textbook. The tests and papers were easy.
Einhorn is AMAZING. Along with Prof. Hald (Calculus), she is one of the best professors I've had so far at Berkeley. She makes you interested in the plight of the Indians and black slaves of America's not-so-pretty past. Also, her midterm is reasonable, final decent as well. Papers are manageable, just get help from your GSI. TAKE EINHORN!
She was awesome!!
Einhorn is an amazing professor. She is very knowledgeable and extremely enthusiastic. She speaks very fast, so I used a laptop to keep up. Grade consisted of two papers, one midterm, discussion, and final. All graded by your GSI... I just had my last lecture, and she made a wonderful speech about making history ourselves and received much applause
She is an amazing lecturer. it gets very easy to get sucked into the lecture because she explains things in a very energetic manner. the exams and essays were fair. if your looking to fulfill the history requirement at berkeley, take this P/NP just so you can enjoy the class without having to put a lot of effort into it. but overall shes amazing
professor is engaging and somehow loves history. Try not to fall asleep in her lectures, even though they are long, and focus on the main themes in the class. Take thorough notes. if you can write fairly well, you’ll do fine in this class. Be sure to tie in the main themes on the essays and go off a strong thesis. Participate in discussion.
This class was pretty much hell when it came to studying and the essays. The topics were somewhat difficult but after you start writing you seem not to care anymore. However, if you are willing to not have a life for about 3 to 4 days before each test you should get an A. I got an A- but it pretty much killed me. 2 essays, 1 midterm, 1 final, disc.
Professor Einhorn's lectures are great and really hold your attention. The learning in this class is mostly done through lectures, with the text books only as supplements. So don't take it if you can't learn by listening.
Excellent lecturer. Very passionate about her field. Interesting class that is not too challenging. NO TEXTBOOOK- if you miss lecture, you miss the material so definitely make friends in the class.
The class was pretty good, but there is no way you can be absent. Really the only thing tests are based on is lecture. A good GSI makes all the difference in the world!
Amazing lecturer, as everyone says. Brilliant, vivacious, entertaining, clear...awesome history class for a typically boring subject. Always attend lecture, otherwise you miss out. The GSIs were AMAZINGly helpful and personable. The primary sources are worth reading; they love it when you relate them to the lecture themes.
So they say the class is interesting and yea Einhorn is a great professor... that really doesn't make a difference when you kill yourself studying for the midterms and the final. I gave up my life for like 4 days before both tests and the essays were on hard topics. I got an A- but really worked for it. Try to find another history class.
She is tough. I ended up taking this class P/NP. Too much to study for in her tests, and too much reading for my liking (but then, I'm not a humanities major). GSIs are very qualified, and her lectures are quite clear. But the class format just was... tough.
People should stop complaining about how hard her classes are, there are definitely harder history classes out there . She is an incredibly enthusiastic lecturer and her lectures are well done. She assigns interesting books that are not difficult. She is also an incredibly friendly, helpful professor. It is a great class for freshmen
Einhorn is an amazing teacher. Yea, the class isn't easy, but it's Cal, so what do you expect? Her enthusiasm is incredible and she lectures are well organized and hold your interest throughout.
While no textbook (just a big reader and lots of other books), reading is absolutely necessary as is lecture. If you keep up, you'll love her and the class. It's certainly demanding but Einhorn is so passionate about history and such a great lecturer, even in a smaller class like 123. One day in there made me switch majors to History.
Einhorn is AMAZING! it makes you want to go to class and just listen to her stories and her opinions on history. You really feel fully engaged in the class (if you keep up with the reading). MY GSI WAS THE BEST EVER! only thing is she does talk really fast, but as long as you cling to the bigger story or theme you'll be fine on tests.
Absolutely amazing. I took 7A with her, too, which is what made me want to take 123 in the first place. Her lectures are very engaging, and her grading is VERY fair. Just do a moderate amount of reading (you don't even have to do all of it) and go to every class.
I took 123 P/NP because I am not a history major. It was a great experience purely due to Professor Einhorn's enthusiastic and interesting lectures. The class was low on administrative/grading/misc. drama and high on learning, which is exactly what I was looking for. She's great!
Professor Einhorn easily made Hist 7B my favorite class of the semester. She picked appropriate and interesting topics to represent the growth and struggles of America from the Civil War to present. I highly recommend taking a class with this amazing woman!
she is a great teacher who really engages you into her lectures. For her midterm/final just look over your notes and try to connect the overall themes of everything. Make sure to study details in order to support your thesis. Last thing :GO TO LECTURE.
She was absolutely fantastic. She is the epitome of a "Berkeley Professor". While there is a lot of reading, I higly recommend taking atleast one of her courses over the course of one's Berkeley years! She is brilliantly eloquent!
Einhorn is passionate and enthusiastic about her subject. Puts a new spin on most everything you thought you already knew about US history. Test prompts are vague, so it's hard to earn a top score without tons of relevant detail and insightful points. Easy to earn a B, not so much an A; this surprised me after earning top scores on AP hist tests.
I got an A on my midterm, first essay, and final. GSI decides to choose the dumbest essay paper ever: 10 page argumentative paper on a building around campus. What is there to argue?it's a building. What I expected to be the easiest A ever, became a B because of my GSI's stupidity. The GSI grades everything in this class so hope you get a good one.
I didn't really attend lectures but w/ help of study guides, got good grades on exams. Essays on other hand were graded VERY HARD at least by my GSI! Professor is meh, regular in my opinion but if have to take 7B, go ahead and take her. Watch out for the papers though, they are graded hard!
She was incredible! Her lectures are like listening to a story that makes the hour and a half fly by. She does speak very fast but her lectures are easy to follow. As long as you attend discussion the essays are a breeze.
Knows her stuff, organizes her lectures well, but she's very annoying and high strung. She needs to get better GSIs.
Took her 123 lecture and 103 seminar. She's a brilliant, passionate and engaging lecturer. But, she probably has the highest expectations of all hist profs from her students as she assumes you did all the readings, thought about them, and have a strong opinion on the subjects. Clear your schedule for her classes. Very accessible 4 office hours too
I took colonial american history with Einhorn, and I loved it. She is brilliant and her lectures are great because of her smarts although they could be easily digestible. She is very anxious and unpersonable, but I still loved her class and her personally. Her course content was inspired.
Great professor, very interesting lecture.50 minutes midterm is brutal and you better knew the material really well if you want to finish a good decent essay in time.the essay topic is very narrow too, so study hard before it.
Interesting to watch lecture but assigns a lot of projects.
She is a great lecturer and you should attend them because you learn a lot. She has great interest in the subject but the midterm is not humanly possible
Extremely enthusiastic, with a clear and well supported viewpoint on just about everything. Great lecturer.
She's passionate about the subject although she tends to only present one side to the story. But, this is Berkeley, of course you're gonna get biased rhetoric. Midterms and final are easy, I didn't study or read the books and I pulled an A. Just use her viewpoints and you're fine!
Einhorn is amazing. Her lectures are interesting and engaging. The paper is difficult, but if Dylan Esson is your GSI then you can count on getting a lot of help. There is a lot of reading and you have to study to do well on the midterm and final. She is amazing though.
She talks really fast, and it's a little overwhelming at first, but eventually you learn what are the important things to take note of. Go to lecture and take notes! Her class isn't webcasted, so you can only get the information during lecture, or in much smaller volume and lesser detail from your GSI during discussion. All exams are long essays.
She's a great lecturer, made things I'd heard a thousand times before seem new, interesting, and clearer than ever before. Essay exams with a small section on the readings, which is totally doable without even reading the books.
Really great teacher and very passionate. Although she definitely has pet topics and is pretty opinionated, it in no way diminishes the class. Tests are made up of essays and a few shorts answers on readings (that are basically free points). Tests are designed to show what you know, not expose what you don't. Highly recommend this class
Amazing class and incredible professor! Take this if you have a chance!
Einhorn is amazing! I loved this class and still rave about it to my friends. She really has taken American history and tells it in a new and exciting way. The midterm was tough only because of the time constraint, but the content is very easy if you paid attention. She has tons of passion and makes the class extremely interesting!
Einhorn is one of the best professors I've had at Cal. Very passionate about her subject and lectures are interesting and clear. Tests and assignments are fair and straight-forward if you've gone to the lectures and read the material, which is very well picked and useful. Can't recommend this class and professor Einhorn highly enough.
Einhorn is an enthusiastic and lively lecturer. She makes history come alive. She is both accessible and helpful. I think she is one of the best professors at Berkeley. The easiest way to succeed in her class is to take verbatim notes of her lectures; however, her reading assignments should not be ignored. Great teacher, period.
She speaks with enthusiasm- but this class is HARD! So much material is covered, and if you have a bad GSI this will totally ruin your experience in this class. There is a 10 page research paper and the final is cumulative. If you miss one lecture you are missing A LOT. Lastly, this class requires SO much reading from a large course reader to novel
After my bad experience with APUSH in hs, I wasn't excited about this class and thought I would hate it.But Einhorn blew me away! She's honestly the best lecturer and won an award for that this year!I've taken classes with all the hyped up profs like presti and filippenko, but Einhorn puts them all to shame.DO NOT MISS CLASS & you should be fine
One of the best classes and professors at Cal. I loved US History in high school, but Professor Einhorn takes things to a whole new level and reveals new ways of thinking about the past. Lots of readings but manageable. Attend all the lectures and discussions and you should be fine! One midterm, a 10-page research paper [not hard], and a final.
Einhorn is an amazing professor. I learned to appreciate history in a whole new way, and I can't help but apply my knowledge from the class to the news and everyday conversations. Einhorn connects the dots and helps explain why our country is how it is today, and her passion makes the class completely engaging. I wish I could keep taking the class!
I know she already has so many raving reviews but I couldn't help but add my own. Professor Einhorn is an absolutely amazing professor who is engaging, clever, brilliant, funny, and a great lecturer. Even if you aren't interested in history, TAKE THIS CLASS. She will change your mind. Hands down best professor I've had so far.
Amazing lecturer. Hard class but she was worth it. I'm a history major but even my non-history major friends LOVED her class. Highly recommended.
Professor Einhorn is the best! A very engaging lecturer. She knows her stuff too. The reading is a bit much at times but it is relevant to what she and the GSI's are talking about. Research paper, not a big stresser if you keep up with it. Take this class if you're interested in history, you'll learn a lot!!
This is the best course I've taken so far at Cal. Her lectures are interesting and her passion for her subject is infectious. There is a lot of reading, but they are easy and (mostly) fun to read. Attend lecture and discussion section. Midterm, 10 page research paper (easy), final. Satisfies American History and AC. If you can, TAKE THIS COURSE!
Great class. Lectures are interesting. Einhorn didn't really live up to the reputation I thought she would though.
6 years after graduating from UCB, Professor Einhorn is 1 of 2 professors that I think about on a daily basis. She inspired me to read American history for leisure, and inspired me to pursue a minor in African American studies. There is no professor that knows more about the politics of slavery than Einhorn. I still have my notes from her class!
Simply excellent: organized, interesting, often entertaining. It's a great class, and she teaches it with great aplomb. The natural awesomeness of history is only further augmented by her instruction. No complaints here.
At first, I didn't like her lecture style-she tends to talk by themes more than chronologically. Once I got used to it, though, I thoroughly enjoyed this class. She's a passionate and enthusiastic professor and her lectures are always engaging. A lot of reading, but only a couple really bad ones-the rest are interesting. Got an A with a good effor
Excellent. Excellent. Excellent! Learned so much in this class, and never lost interest because Prof Einhorn structures the materials as stories. You can see how much she loves the subject and she's very enthusiastic. Highly recommend taking a class with her.
Interesting lectures, especially everything post WW2. Not easy to get an A, easy to get a B
key flaw is the fact that she tells the course as a story-one which she can twist and warp in whatever way she pleases while leaving out 80% of history. good instructors present multiple sides of an issue in order to encourage critical thinking in their students. Einhorn fails at this.Got an A, but didn't enjoy the narrow minded narrative presented
Professor Einhorn is amazing! She is a great lecturer and keeps her class entertained and captivated. She makes boring things seem interesting and clears up a lot of confusion. She is extremely helpful during her office hours too! Overall, i learned many new things and was satisfied with the class greatly.
She is such an amazing lecturer! She teaches in stories and uses facts as details which makes lectures fun and entertaining. Best lecturer I have had so far at Cal. She is also easy to talk to during office hours and offers a lot of support to her students.
She's an awesome lecturer! Learned so much in this class as an international student who had never taken American History Before! 10/10 would recommend her class. There is one midterm (easy), a 10 page research paper and a final ( 2 essays and a few MCQs)
It's like I learned US history for the 1st time, and I've taken US hist my whole life. No date/president memorizing, class is story time. Probably presents a liberally-biased view of history, but I love the content anyway. This is a quality class: every movie shown is 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, every reading is interesting and thought-provoking.
Stayed in the class for 3 days until I switched out. Lectures were kind of boring; she read straight from a script and looked down the entire time. Interesting information sometimes, but most of I learned in high school. Basic information about the US. She seems like an awesome person and had cool GSIs though. Would recommend if you love US Hist.
Class content was quite interesting, but reading was extensive for a lower division class. Midterm essay was hard to complete in 45 minutes, also there are no clear grading criteria, it depends on your GSI. Easy enough to follow in lecture but there are no notes on the slides so it's up to you to keep up and write or type what she's saying.
She's not an amazing lecturer, but she is specific on what she wants from you. As long as you go to lecture and discussion (since that's where you get all your info for tests), you'll be fine. Get ready to read a lot of sparknotes and papers though.
Professor EInhorn is very engaging with her lectures; she is very animated which make the material easier to absorb. That being said, she is very ardent about no phones and talking to your neighbor. She stopped lecture several times to yell at students. The midterm was easy. Final was a bit harder
Professor: Einhorn is an amazing lecturer. Lectures are presented in narrative style, slides only have pictures. People love attending lecture and just sitting there listening to her talk (even non-students). History 7B: content is manageable for students who haven't learned US history. midterms/final and research essay is very fair.
I LOVED EINHORN. She absolutely changed my life and made me want to become a history major. She is incredibly engaging, her office hours are incredibly helpful, and she is very passionate about what she teaches. Somewhat reading heavy but very manageable.
Alright everyone should be REQUIRED to take 7B with Einhorn. Her interpretation of American history is so refreshing and the course reader she put together was gold So glad I went to her office hours often. She's not afraid to tell you when you're wrong, and it's so funny when she does. Majoring in history because of her and this class wooo
Einhorn herself is a great lecturer and a great person, but I found there to be too much information crammed in this class. I was taking 2 upper div classes at this time and this one had the most reading by FAR as well as having to write furiously to "get" her lectures. If you really like history, go for it, but other than that I'd pass.
She is a very inspiring professor and her lectures are very interesting even though I already have previous knowledge of US History. Discussions were mandatory. Midterm and final weren't that difficult and the one research paper was an interesting experience. There were lots of readings but I got by by skimming a few. This class was very enjoyable.
Creative and clear lectures. A good amount of reading, but all worth it.
I cannot believe Einhorn is retiring!! She is seriously on the best and most inspiring lecturers at Cal. She made me fall in love with history all over again.
Einhorn was the mother I was blessed to have for a single semester. Her lectures will make you feel like youre in a comedy club, but an extremely informative comedy club. There are a lot of readings, but youre encouraged to skim. Also, she has the best playlist in Berkeley.
One of the best professors I've had at Cal!!! She is very motivational, engaging, and funny. She lectures in a way that keeps you interested in every course. Best history course I've taken at Cal!
