She tries to get the point across but she doesnt grade on a rubric so it is up to your imagination as to what grade you get.

Dropped class as she did not to allow me to make up work that was assigned before I registered. Allows little or no individuallity of the student, and seems to want everyone's writing to be flat, mundane, and a carbon copy of one another. (Plagerism aside.) Then again, why do we even need to take Freshman Comp? If you're talented enough, CLEP it.

My girlfriend and I do not recommend this class. You're better off taking another teacher who helps you out and not shuts the door on your face when you're in dire need of help. If you think you're going to be able to miss one of her classes, you're wrong, she takes points off your average.Journals must be done and brought to class.

The main issue with this teacher, and I use that word lightly, is her pompous attitude towards her students. Combined with her unrelenting and uncompromisng standards for for her students, which somehow miraculously don't apply to herself, make for a very long and frustrating class.

This is the worst English Teacher I have ever taken. She has the worst grading criteria ever implemented by any professor I have taken. She tells her students to come to class but yet she misses class herself. Do not take her.

Grades way too hard. got a few 89s. comments on papers are illegible. The readings are pointless because she repeats them in class. too many papers. just dont take her class.

Her class was very hard. There were too many expectations eventually, I had to drop the class. I would NOT recommend her to anyone. On a personal note, when I did interact with her she was kind of rude.

Professor English-Bircher arbitrarily throws around Cs and Ds because she forgot the letters A and B in the alphabet. She does not care about you as a student and will dock you for the smallest of things. She has an over inflated ego that she will take out on you and your views/perspectives presented in papers.

Do not take her !! Horrible professor she locks students out of the classroom if you come in 5 minutes late. She has so much busy work and makes it feel her class is more important than other professors. Do not take her and she is charging students to look at your essays this semester. Bad professor she gives an attitude too!!

Avoid taking her at all costs! Honestly, didn't even like going to class because of the unnecessary and lagging lectures. Grades really hard! I am not joking! She is really hard to please. Never taking her again.

Professor Bircher expects students to write at her level, which she constantly reminds you of. When it comes to grading papers, she leaves sassy and condescending comments on your rough draft and little to no advice on bettering your paper. She consistently causes me to doubt my skills as a writer and as a student overall. Do not take her.

She is an absolute terrible professor. She does not know how to give proper directions on what she wants. She acts like you have a degree in her field and makes you feel like an idiot, when she really is that.

This teacher grades ridulously. An A or B is impossible for a paper for her. She is rude to students and lacks any professionalism. Avoid her.

Avoid her if you can. Extremely tough grader and expects students to write at her level. She does give feedback on papers, but usually they are not specific and can be condescending. She's an okay professor when explaining certain things.

She is a good teacher and gives really good feedback on papers, but she keeps bragging about her second job as a Professional Editor, and grades paper with super high expectations. I don't think anyone in my class got above an 80 on a paper.

If students could vote to fire a teacher, shed be gone after her first semester. she grades on an 11 point scale and an 11/11 is a C!? in what world? even if you do everything on the rubric youre barely passing. she expects a room of 18 year olds to write like professionals. if this wasnt a required credit, everyone would drop the class.

Don't take this class. I had a 3.5 GPA all throughout highschool and took 2-3 AP classes. This professor is a joke and grades on an 11 point scale. She literally told us to not expect an A on the first day of class. If you do everything correctly, you'll get a C. She wants us freshman to write like we are famous authors. Just save yourself.

She is literally the worst professor you can get. I recommend not taking this class unless you are an professional writer. She will take the essays like they are supposed to be written by a college senior that is a English major.

Standards are crazy high for a freshman course. She expects everyone to be the next great writer and grades you ridiculously if you are not. She will make you re-write papers 2 or 3 times just to get a passing grade. Goodluck getting an A unless your name is shakespear.

She treats all students as if this course were full of graduate students and not first semester freshman. All her critiques are harsh and make the writer lose confidence. As her student, I would turn papers in and tell myself "I'm going to have to rewrite anyway". I've never felt more awful about my writing and would highly recommend you not take.

Look as a freshman and possibly your first english class you will feel discouraged every time you turn in a paper Her constructive criticism is harsh and at times rude no matter how much work you put in. DO NOT take her class if your major isnt english If you dont have other professor options to take, wait a semester because its not worth it.

The professor is a decent person face to face but has impossibly high expectations. She'll have a million issues with your paper no matter how good of a writer you are. Her comments are rude and condescending which kills your motivation quickly. Extremely tough grader for no reason. Be prepared to rewrite papers 3+ times to pull off a C.

If you're looking for a red flag on this teacher, THIS IS IT. Do not take her course if you aren't ready for a semester full of worry and stress. It's not worth it, I promise. She can be condescending and rude when giving feedback and it makes you not want to keep going in this course, it makes it beyond difficult to keep up with all the work.

She has never once gave me any encouragement. She has a clear lack of empathy. If you are not writing at PHD-level, she will give you rude feedback criticising absolutely everything. She is a very difficult grader and assigns excessive work, especially in the last three weeks of class. Stay away from her if you do not already write at a PHD-level.

Not many essays, but very little time to do them with no explanation. Must be in class to receive the little help given. Lots of in class work with little to no time to do it. Does not tell you when you have assignments and when they are due.

If you are not writing a Shakespearian level, do not expect to pass this class. The grading is HARD and will make you want to never speak or write in English again. Assumes everyone is a famous writer and gives no sympathy while grading essays. Sure, some of the grading is helpful, but only if you plan on becoming the next Mark Twain.

I felt disrespected while reading the criticism of my papers and lost all respect and drive for this clown of a teacher. She seems nice when she lectures about useless topics yet really shows her cold bloodedness in her grading notes. Don't get me started on the incredibly bland prompts I was given and expected to turn into 4+ pages.

Where do I start. She grades every assignment like her life depends on it. Her comments are demeaning and condescending which leaves you feeling disrespected. I hope you like board/roleplaying games because that's all you'll hear & write about all semester. Avoid at all cost. Wish I had a warning before taking & almost failing this class.

EXTREMELY tough grader. Nothing above an 80 on the core papers which are 15% of your grade each (4 in total). All other assignments are participation. You have to work in a group for a project the entire semester and really depends on if you have a good group dynamic or not on how well you do. Honestly, try for another professor if you careforan A

I was a transfer student. I came from a community college and earned As and Bs the entire time. I only took this course because it was required, and I am only trying to get my degree because it was something I wanted to accomplish. I wish I had known about rate my processor before I took the course. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS! SHE WILL KILL MOTIVATION.

Everything is game related, directions are hard to follow. 3 papers, all of the topics are variations of the same question centered on games. comments on your papers are hard to understand, she doesn't say what you're doing wrong, just says you're wrong and need to start over. comments are rarely helpful, almost always demeaning, leave you lost.

I would not recommend taking this class unless you want to cry every time you have a paper due. Feedback is never helpful unless it's on citing, she usually starts off her feedback by claiming it is too vague. If you want to lose all motivation and want a reason to drop out i would recommend taking this course. I could put more but there's a limit.

She assigns almost 3 times more work than other courses, papers/every assignment are over her interests and that's it, and she started the semester saying that she's a published author and doesn't really need her job. Mostly lectures, notes, and skills practice so there's no time to work on papers during class.

AVOID!!! All 3 papers revolve around games and the prompts make no sense. Her feedback isnt very helpful either.

I absolutely dreaded every T/Th because of her. Her feedback is so condescending to the point where I didn't even feel motivated to write for her. The whole class is revolved around games which made research boring and hard to find. Get ready to detail every little thing to her and pray that you get a good group for the project that's worth 15%.

Please avoid. My class average had a 76 average and she assigned 0 extra credit while many other English professors did. Feedback is very harsh with no help on how to do better. You will write about games, especially board games which you will have to somehow find research on.

I lost my motivation to write because of her. Her feedback was not helpful, to the point I do not want to do any of her assignments and essays. She gives a ridiculous amount of homework, and most of them are due the next class day. Avoid her at all costs, she will make you grow grey hairs very early.

I took her hybrid class and it was extremely difficult. There's essays back to back with no breaks and she responds to emails but is very passive and unhelpful. I want to stress how INCREDIBLY unclear she is with her directions and is very hard to get the assignments right because she is such a critical grader. I do not recommend taking her class.

This Professor was nice don't get me wrong but she is really tough. Her work was very time-consuming and was starting to interfere with my other classes. Her grading is also very wishy-washy. Sometimes she doesn't read the homework or inclass work and will give you a perfect grade but when it comes to paper grades you are basically screwed.

DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. She's a mean grader, she quite literally wrote "HUH?" on my essay and really discouraged my writing skills. Also she has you write THREE PAPERS BACK TO BACK, while working on your mandatory group project. Don't even get me started on that 30 page portfolio. Please pick another professor for composition 1 and 2. Send help plz.

The professor is a very heavy grader and gives little helpful feedback. For a first-year class, this was my hardest class out of the semester. The entire course is based on games and it is very difficult to find appropriate sources for each very specific prompt. There is so much more that I could say, but to make it simple, TAKE ANOTHER PROFESSOR!!

Worst professor I had at UTSA. For a general education class she grades everything as if it is a masters thesis. Class averages on many of the assigned papers were in the 60's and 70's. If you do take this class pick a topic that sounds easy for paper 1 because this will have a huge impact on your grade and you cannot switch.

DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS, you will put hours into a paper you think is good, just for her to give you a 60 or 70. Also terrible attitude and overall terrible class.

On my first paper of the year where I tried my hardest because I'm not the best writer and so writing is very difficult for me, she told me that my draft was gonna be a 0 if I didn't rewrite it. Which broke my heart, and I had worked hard on the essay. Also, her comments to "help" my paper were "huh" And "?". And she never elaborated on it.

PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DO NOT PICK HER (if you want to stay sane) She yaps for about half of the class than gives you about 25-30 minutes to complete the inclass assignment which is due at the end of class. She is a super tough grader everything has to be perfect, also you get so many papers and you also start new papers in between papers.

I took this class Fall 2024 as a Freshman, & let me tell you; not even Shakespeare or Dr. Seuss could've passed this class. Not only will you be overly-criticized and knit-picked, you will most definitely lose all your passion for writing. You have to hate yourself to take this class- avoid & save yourself from staying up & crying all night.

She is an extremely tough professor. She grades papers like she is teaching a class for master students. She is moonlighting as a professional nitpicker because no mark is small enough to deduct. Her research topics are extremely vague and difficult to research precisely. She gives extremely rude feedback and demotivates people to write. RUNNN!

I had Professor Bircher My freshman year. She is an EXTREMLY harsh grader expecting master's level papers from freshman. Topics for papers are extremely vague and if she does not like your topic your out of luck and at best getting a C on that paper. Also the final project of making a game is not at all related to the course. Good Luck

No, just no. If you think you are doing good on your paper, you aren't. After paper 1, she openly talked about how only one person the class that she had already graded received an A on the paper and how everyone else had mainly gotten Cs and Ds. She grades like the lower your average is the more she gets paid. She's pure evil. SAVE YOURSELF!

Do not take this class. She grades way too hard with papers having to be MASTER LEVEL PERFECT just to get a C. Papers are very long and research topics is very hard to find. All of the writing is about games. ALL OF IT. Then theirs a group project about making a game which has nothing to do with the course. Take another professor please.
