he was the best professor i have had in college so far. his class was so kick back. honestly... i didnt even try and i ended up with a B in the class. the semester project is so easy. he says that it should take the whole semester to do, but i did it in the last 2 days and i got a 95% on it! i would take him FOR SURE if i were you!
If you want to learn anything at all dont take this class. This class and this professor is useless. Honestly dont know how he got hired.
this teacher is horrible. if you dont mind sitting through a class where you can literally turn your brain off and waste an hour for an easy A or B, then this is the teacher for you.
i didnt learn a thing and i went everyday. its seriously a waste of time.
I found this teacher and his class annoying. He would ask questions on the test that had not been discussed in class. I am an auditory learner and in this class most of the questions had not been discussed.
He was a very good teacher! He told us what he expected from us up front. Read the text, go over the hand outs and you will do great :) Very easy on the eyes!
those who claim they didnt learn anything probably either did not pay attention to his lectures or refused to crack open their textbook. huigen is a decent professor, really. don't expect all the info to be spoonfed, but he does lecture clearly and thoroughly. you earn your grade fairly. just do your part and study a bit, and the A is yours.
Mr. Huigen is willing to help you with any questions that you may have. His lectures are very easy to follow and are mostly on the tests. It is very helpful to read the textbook before tests though. Another good suggestion for this class is to start a study group if you need it.
After 30 units of classes he's the worst profesor Ive had. Isn't comfortable lecturing in front of a class. Reads notes word for word. Sociology tests are hard and cover the book more than his notes. Don't get caught with your cell phone or he will have a mental breakdown
He is very nice,open-minded,& likes to wear Hawaiian shirts. If you follow his exact instructions you're guaranteed to get a good grade on the assignments (mostly no longer than 3pgs). The quizzes are in a T / F format, so you'd be fine if you just skim through the book. The final was super easy.
He's a good teacher. Reminds me of jason Bateman, but over all he's a good teacher.
Not my best professor. Lectures were extremely boring and tests incredibly difficult. He gives out study guides but they don't seem to help on the tests. I didn't slack in his class and yet I still struggled to get a B.
his lectures are very boring, and the study guides he gives out don't help on the test at all. Plus the tests are very difficult even if you study.
Horrible teacher. His lectures are extremely boring and the notes he give don't help on the test what so ever.
this teacher hates society as a whole. there is no hw but your grade only survives on tests where the questions are not on the study guide, powerpoints, or on the self tests
This class is pretty easy if you pay attention to the straight forward lectures and READ the book. If you read the text, which is the most interesting one I have read in college, you will get an A. He's a good teacher.
I don't like the way he presents. It seems like he doesn't know too much about the subject he presents. His notes don't really help on the test. He gives notes, power points, study guides, self test, but they don't help in the real test. If it wasn't for the book that make the subjects very clear, I would be doing very bad on the tests.
Mr. Huigan is a great teacher for socio 2 because he gets the class to participate in whatever topic he brings up. His lectures can be boring, but for this class he makes it up by making students do projects instead of taking exams. Overall its an easy class especially when you need the unites.
Sociology isn't my thing but this prof didn't make it easy on me. Tests are based pretty much on the online notes but write down everything between the lines he says in lecture. He's not a very engaging but all the info is there for you, you just have to want to find it. Avoid his mundane lectures in you can.
He barely knows what he is talking about. If you pay attention you'll realize he can't stray away from his podium with his notes on it for more than 5 seconds. If you directly confront him about a question he'll answer, but reluctantly. I really don't think he cares about the subject, class, or students much at all. His tests are way too hard with regard to what he actually teaches, but if you read the book you'll be fine
I took him last semester for Soc1A and liked him. I took him again this semester for Soc2 and now I don't like him at all. I feel like he rambles and just copies stuff out of the book and it's hard to take notes in this class. I don't recommend him, but if you end up with him make sure to read the chapter before he goes over it.
I hated this class. Completely pointless, in the beginning I took notes on everything he said, did the study guide and studied like crazy and when I took the test, I got a low B...after that I didn't really pay attention but I still got a B in the class. Pointless and boring class. The study guides don't completely help
This guy is super lame. His lectures are pointless, so I hardly went. He takes attendance points off if you dont go. This dropped my grade from a 92 to an 88. Study and use his practice tests on BB, and do his study guide. He is big onconcepts, so make sure you dont study vocab too much. Just read the book and use bb
Cool dude but his tests are hard. You have to read the chapters and really understand the concepts because a lot of his test questions are on scenarios. He factors attendance into your grade too. I missed only 3 classes all semester, took major lecture notes and used the study guides and still got a B. His term paper assignment is easy though!
Difficult class for me. Only upside is he drops your lowest test score at the end of the semester. Study guides aren't useful for the test. Don't take him.
he seems to be dragging himself. not clear about his concepts.
Iv'e had him for a few weeks now and I think his class is not all that bad. Read the chapters, listen to his lectures, take some side notes, and study a few times a week and you will have an A easy.
his class is pretty boring. it easy it you can pay attention to the lecture but i find it hard to because the only h.w is a photo project and it doesnt make me wanna pay attention in class.
I wouldnt recommend him as a teacher. You sit in class and he literally reads you the quotes from the textbook. EXACT QUOTES! He has you read then repeats the book word for word. Going to class is a waste of time, wouldnt recommend him.
read the required books & do projects the way he wants them done, & you'll get an easy A. he gives 10 quizzes, & they are always on mondays. 5 t/f questions. final is really easy, too. everything he says in his lectures come from the book & he seems to dislike his students. read the textbooks. soc2 is a lot more interesting than he makes it.
This guy..... Well first off there is no reason to go to class. All of his lectures are straight from the book (literally)4367. As long as you read the chapters and use the "self-test" he provides on blackboard you should have no trouble passing the class with at least a B.
Tests are pretty hard. He asks random things from little boxes youd never think to even read. Id study for hours.. ended up with a B. MUST read chapters.
SOC 1A- took in 2011, pretty straight forward college class. Mostly lecture with few homework assignments, if you want an A just take good notes and read the book, not much else to say. Not an easy A but your grade easily reflects your efforts, not one of those classes that doesn't give you pay off for studying.
More than half of students dropped this class. If you know all of the answers to his study guide, you will pass 50% of his test. The test has trick questions (some have multiple correct answers). This class is not recommended.
Great teacher! Very structured and well-prepared! Cares about his students and he is easy to talk to.
I liked him. Lecture based class so you need to attend class meetings & read the book. No homework assigned, grades tests fast, drops lowest test grade, takes attendance for points, 1 project, a few extra credit opportunities. Not a hard class, but can be if you don't put effort into it. Just attend lectures + read and you'll be fine! :) Good luck.
He was so boring. I didn't like his teaching methods at al. His study guides will help you pass maybe 50% of the content. I wouldn't recommend him but you don't have many options so I wish you luck
Teacher doesn't have any homework, but it is hard to concentrate on studying if you're not the type of person who needs homework to study. Overall he is a great teacher and the class is easy as long as you read your book and DO NOT CRAM.
I didn't enjoy this class at all. He gives you a study guide for the test, however even if you study the crap out of it you will come to realize that there is only a few questions that are actually on the test. The rest of the questions consist of things you have never heard of before. Lectures are very boring. Take something else.
study guide only gives you maybe 60% of the test answers. no homework and one simple project. hes strict on tardiness and phones. he almost referred me to the dean because I was on my phone. ridiculous. boring ass class
This class is fairly easy. The study guide for the final is EXACTLY the same as the test. He has quizzes throughout the semester but if you read the conclusions from the book, its easy to pass. He is strict about attendance and phones. He is well organized, I would recommend his class.
I do not recommend this teacher! His study guides are not helpful at all, he reads quotes straight from the textbook. And your grade just depends on the test if you fail or pass it. Half of the students dropped hes class. Theirs no assignments just test.
Hardest class ever! The teacher does not give out any study guides whatsoever. Attending class on time is crucial but if you come late, you have to sit all the way in the back and he docks points from your grade! He never assigns homework just one project and 3 tests! The studyguides are nothing like the tests! Do not take him!
Professor Huigen's class is definitely not a walk in the park, all you have are tests and only one assignment. So if you don't test well it is hard to pass. One opportunity for extra credit so do it!! As for his teaching I feel like any student that read this book could have taught the class. Nothing special really bland and boring.
I Love this teacher and his classes. I've taken both classes. He's very organized and teaches everything that's on the test.
This professor is very organized and straight-forward. He lectures on test material, as well as, provides plenty of study guides and outlines that make being prepared for his exams easy. He's nice, helpful and respectful. He's flexible on which edition textbook you can use. I think the only way to fail is to slack off or not bother showing up.
Needed class for degree. Somewhat interesting. Huigen does a good job of conveying most of the info in unbiased manner. Only 2 ExCred options: Early photo shoot assignment, and trip to LA museum, sucks not to have more ExCred opportunities. Tests are hard, must read or at least do practice questions on Bb and study guide. Helps to attend lectures.
Depending on what class you have with him the lectures are short. He does not make the class fun so be prepared to try and stay focused.
Extremely difficult class. I always warn people that no much you study for his class, it might only help a little bit because his tests are completely irrelevant to the book as well as the notes. Most of my friends failed. I thankfully passed the class, but I was also the most passionate person in the room regarding my interest in sociology.
When I signed up Soc 1A my freshman year I was expecting an interesting interactive experience, this was not that. Huigen gives 4 tests and one assignment all year. Even if you study your notes/exam review you will have trouble. His tests are very confusing and unclear. I do not recommend.
This teacher is without a doubt passionate about sociology, but if you'r like me, and you want to get an A, then this prof. is not right for you. Tests are beyond hard, and lecture note/study guides only cover about half the test. If you want an A, YOU NEED TO STUDY. There is no working around it. Getting an A is poss. but extremely difficult.
Very boring class. The teacher just reads out of the textbook but tries to make it seem like he knows it off the top of his head. The tests are confusing. I did manage to get a C, even though I never once read the textbook.
Textbook textbook textbook. It's a must. This class is based solely on the book. The professor is very monotone and plain. Don't fall behind on readings. Cramming in this class is extremely difficult.
Once you take this class you will be so smart you can drop out of school and get a job at McDonalds and make the big money, I said its hard out here for a playa when you tryna get this money for the rent.
Easy A as long as u study for tests and go to class.
He's a great teacher but his class is hard. His study guides doesn't cover everything, sometimes doesn't go all of the materials for the exam. He has one project and one homework, take advantage of it to help your grade up. Do good on the exams and you'll be fine!
His lecture notes and study guides are irrelevant to the exams. Very boring class, he doesn't make it interactive or interesting when covering the material. There's 2 homework assignments, other than that your grade depends on how well you do on the exams. I wouldn't recommend taking this class with Huigen.
I Take my classes serious and i spent a long time studying, and i and still getting 78% on test. For the most part his test questions are tricky, you really need to know the deep meaning of the subject and not just memorize the text. Its sucks that he only gives out 2 assignments and 4 test to make up our grade.
For me personally the class was very slow. Multiple people would fall asleep in his class, even people in the front row. Was surprised that he never said anything. There were 4 test, one can be dropped. 3 assignments, and one extra credit. I have notice people who struggle with this class are liberals thinking this class will fit there agenda. Nope
If you are looking for an Easy A you most likely will not find it here, His Test are a bit tricky, they are made from 3-4 chapters of 50 questions and you really have to know your material. just going to class, reading the text, and doing the study is not enough, i do all of that and do all the extra credit and i still have a B in his class.
Does not grade on much so really have to do good on test. Also not a lot of extra credit.
Love Huigen. His lectures are super interesting and I overall enjoyed his class. Received an A with minimal time spent studying. Again, great professor, would take the course again.
Honestly, I think he's a great professor. He's passionate about sociology and the way he lectures will help you remember the material. As long as you study and take good notes, this class isn't that hard. Yes the tests are challenging, but he does give extra credit on most tests and it's all multiple choice. Cool guy, and interesting curriculum.
It's very disheartening when you seriously put in the time to study for the tests and try your hardest, just to check your grades and notice you got a low ass score. And the fact there are only 5 tests and 2 assignments was really sad since the tests are hella hard. Jacking off in class would of been a better use of time. Wish I could write more.
Explains material well in class. Only one homework assignment. Test questions are tricky, and study guides only help for half of test questions. Really read the material and you should be okay.
i don't understand why some people don't like him. he's a really good professor and his curriculum is really interesting. i would definitely recommend him. no homework except reading. class atmosphere is engaging as he wants you to ask questions and participate. tests are pretty normal, not super hard but not easy either. i would 100% take again
Awesome teacher! Took this class during spring semester. He lectures clearly so everyone can understand. Two main assignments you will have to do. He cares about his students success and will always return emails. Follow instructions for assignments, read your study guides, and read material you should pass with flying colors!
My class was a joke. He claims he has clear grading criteria? His rubrics he gives? They don't end up meaning a thing. He lectures straight out of the book. And the quizzes are confusing, too. Overall, this class made me back off of thinking about having Sociology for a major, and I love the material.
Dr. Huigen is kind of disorganized, but he's a very good lecturer. There was like 5 exams, a project, and a paper. They were all pretty easy, you just HAVE to pay attention to the lecture. He says to read the book, but if you just take good lecture notes and study them, you'll be fine.
Took SOC 1B and class was a joke! He would explain things, someone would have a question on clarification, then he would contradict what he had just told the class before the question was asked. Makes you sign a "contract" at beginning of semester where he will drop you if he wants before the drop date. Material is NOT black/white, right/wrong
He lectures the entire class time. The only grades are 5 exams (he drops one of them), a bio paper, and a photo shoot project. Its not hard, but you do have to read the textbook if you want to do well on the exams.
Not bad. Very nice guy. But if you wanna pass, I would HIGHLY advise taking good notes and reading the book. Theres 1 paper and a project to do, but other than that, theres never really any homework. Just study for the exams and youll survive
Hardest class Ive ever taken. Material is easy, but he is a really tough grader. Quiz questions are not always clear, making it hard to do good on them. He grades papers and assignments in a way that you cant really get an A. Nice guy, but horrible grading and quiz questions. And dont even think about missing class, youll fail the class 100%.
A very hard class to get an A in. You have to know know your materials or otherwise you won't get a good grade on the tests. Plus, you have to attend class or he'll drop you after 3 continuous absences
Hard teach and hard class
Probably one of the hardest class out there. Don't take him
I did not like this class! He teaches from one point of view without taking any others into account. The stats and other information he puts in his lecture is not cited and he is not very clear on assignments. Would not take again.
He was very funny and kind. Answered any questions that were asked. When over assignments and exams thoroughly. Provides study guides for you. There are a few assignment to do not very hard. Class was easy and fun
Huigen's online course had 2 tests- the midterm and the final- both comprehensive. The homework is not hard, you just need to stay on top of it, most of it is graded by completion. Your points really come from the essays (I think there were like 3) and the tests. STUDY the homework. No live lectures though. :/
His class is one sided. I had a discussion about politics and got slammed for expressing my opinion that we were asked to share. I was told that my opinion was irrelevant for the color of my skin. He did not step in to protect me from slander and therefore I dropped the class. I gave my opinion kindly and with supporting documents and still got it.
super easygoing class. I was scared to take it after looking at his reviews but everything is super easy. he provides recorded lectures if you like them, and recommends to read out of the book but its a super easy class; none of that is really needed. not a hard class, especially for online. there are discussion boards and film reflections + tests
Online course with Professor Huigen were simple if you read the textbook. Pretty easy going. He gives out extra credit every week and has reading checks that are quizzes to make sure youre reading the textbook.
Gives 2 weeks for assignments to get done but vague on the 3 reflections that you have to complete. Rude in the comments on assignments if he does not agree with you. Overall do not recommend this professor. Midterm and final very difficult and confusing
(Online Class) I thought that this would be the best chance while working. He is not understanding and dislikes opposing opinions. If youre going to take his class just do the work, tried emailing him about my situation and he was inconsiderate. And nothing on the book correlates to the exams only pdfs about how to argue were on the exam.
has no direction to this class. nothing seems to correlate and the midterm/final are based on things that seem like english lessons. just an irritating class since he's kind of an absent professor. the 'element hw' concepts are on the midterm/final. easy for soc1A but I would take 1B w someone else.
I would not take this professor, his assignments do not make sense and have nothing to do with sociology. This was more like an english class than a sociology class. He made really dumb assignments for us to do that did not relate to the class. The only good thing is he gave us 2 weeks to finish the work and extra credit. That is how I passed.
Took class in person but it was treated almost like an online class. I didn't like his style of teaching at all and felt like I was being talked at instead of taught when I attended lectures so I stopped going. Was easy but I feel like I learned nothing. A lot of self-teaching is involved so if you don't learn that way I 100% don't recommend.
even with a drs note and being on dsps he did not accept my drs note when i was VERY sick and it messed up my grade for the whole semester because i couldnt make up one module i missed. didnt even know professors were allowed to not accept drs notes.
I enjoyed the lectures. Just took notes on his lecture slides in person. Tests were done online at home so we did not have to show up to class. Homework was not hard at all. Would recommend this professor, I thought he was great.
