She is an ok prof. She isn't very clear as to what is on the tests. However you can cheat on most assignments. Read the textbook and understand the concepts thoroughly and you will be fine.
I think Robin is an awesome prof and should be rewarded for her hard work. Thank you for making this class so much fun Robin!
she's probably one of the best prof's out there! she so much fun and she's really nice. When you ask for help, she will spend the time to help you and help u with anything you don't understand. I thought her tests, outlines, and slides were pretty clear and straight forward. Just study for the tests from the slides and the outline and u'll be fine!
She's a good prof, do the assignments, study for the tests and follow her instructions and you should do well. Well worth your time.
one of the BEST prof ever! York profs should be more like her. She is willing to help students and her lectures are interesting. She has students participate in demonstrations and is just so much fun to be around! Definitely take this course with her, you will not regret it!
She is extremely helpful and approachable. She is down-to-earth & not snooty! I like her alot because she helped me take interest in science and astronomy which I otherwise would have thought was too difficult. Go Prof Metcalfe!
AMAZING!! The best prof ever. She is really willing to help you if you need it. She cares about her students. Her lectures are fun, clear, interesting. She really wants to make sure students understand her. She does visual demonstrations. Fair tests. Really nice and down to earth. Best prof ever had.
Okay professor - her lectures are clear if a bit dull - most of the course material is posted on line. Very helpful if you are confused on assignments and an easy marker
She's an amazing prof, the material does not really make sense to me (the why factor) but I'll just take it for what it is either way... generally speaking the material is taught well. She's an amazing professor and her assignments and tests are fair game, you will learn but remembering it in the future is up to you.Wish more courses were like this
So Hard, I would advise another NATS course
So hard and wayy to much work.
Honestly this was a very boring class and the way the prof teaches doesnt get you to excited about astronomy. However she is very knowledgable and willing to go to any extent to assist students. You have constant oppertunities to increase your mark. Overal Robin is an amazing person.
Awesome Prof. This course was super easy. Whenever you need help, never desitate to ask cause she will definitely offer it. She's a wonderful person, love her.
He is an awesome prof and gives you every oppertunity to do well, got an A+ with a little bit of effort. take this class for your science credit!! i did..
She is one of the nicest profs ive met, although her lectures are boring the assignements are easy and a great way to make up for poor tests. She tries her best to help and understand her students
Tests, assignments, and projects are easy and straightforward. Going to class isn't necessary (other than for in-class assignments and tests) and textbook use is not required at all.

Awesome Prof And History of Astronomy Awesome Class Actually teaches You Something Useful Got A+ In That Class
She's nice and all, but she cannot teach. I found myself falling asleep more than half the time.
Easy class, Robin and her T.A.s were very helpful and polite. Only downside is how boring her lectures were, otherwise I recommened this class to anyone.
Pretty good prof. Loves what she does & tries to make it interesting for students, but often ends up leaving them more confused. Her assignments are pointless & her exams are directly from lecture notes. Almost everything comes directly from the HISTORY OF ASTRONOMY textbook by Heather Cooper. TAs are terrible, so thankfully there are no tutorials.
She's not the greatest lecturer and the course isn't as interesting as I thought it'd be. As a prof, I wouldn't say she's good - she's pretty mediocre. But thank god, there is no tutorial. I sorta wish I chose a different NATS course, though.
Lectures aren't the most entertaining, especially if you do not understand the content; however, she is easy to talk to and will take the time out to ensure that her students are understanding what is being taught. She is kind and approachable and did a wonderful job with this class! Assignments are easy as are the tests, good class to take!
She is amazing. The content is fun and enjoyable, although it sometimes gets tiring in class. She really care about her students, will help and go the extra mile for them. Exams are multiple choice, and she gives easy assignments and movies. If you want to succeed, you will need to take notes in class (just copy her slides.
SHE IS A GREAT PROFESSOR!SHE CARES A GREAT DEAL ABOUT HER STUDENTS AND THEIR DIFFICULTIES AND THEIR "SITUATIONS".SHE IS VERY EASY GOING,BUT MAKE SURE THAT THE MATERIALS ARE WORTH YOUR MONEY AND TIME!I ENJOYED ALOT IN HER CLASS,AND TRUE I WORKED HARD,BUT IT WAS ONLY WITH HER HELP THAT I WAS ABLE TO GET AN 'A'.GLAD I TOOK THIS COURSE FOR MY 'GENAT'.
Good prof...teaches well, but sometimes rushes through difficult concepts...however, she is always willing to help if you don't understand something. Awesome course and prof!
Sweet, sweet woman. She is beyond helpful and will go out of her way to help you if you need it. Class attendance is mandatory, and don't waste your money buying the book!
Great prof... recommend her class..do not waste ur money to my the book cuz its useless..just copy off the slides(slides are not online)..exams can be tricky however; if you study for exam review questions everything should be ok :) It was a great class!!!!
History of astronomy.. best class ever! Very interesting, very detailed and helpful. Don't be intimidated by the 'science'. Exams all MCQ. Attend lectures is a must to get full understanding. I would sign up for any class she teaches!
SHE IS THUS FAR (LAST YEAR) THE BEST PROF AT YORK. SOOOOOO HELPFUL AND QUICK IN HER RESPONSES. HER ONLINE COURSE WAS THE BEST ONE I'VE EVER TAKEN W/ AUDIBLE AND VISUAL LECTURES. HER MARKING SCH: IS INCREDIBLY FAIR! WITH HER TAKING YOUR BEST MARKS, ANNNND NOT JUST BASING YOUR GRADE ON TWO EXAMS AND DONE. MAKES VIDEOS TO HELP CLARIFY ASSIGNMENTS!
A+ professor! Clear explanation and very helpful teacher. The best online course I ever had, videos are very interesting. If you work hard, you cannot go under A. This is not "lazy" course but definitely the mark is equal to the effort you made.
She made physics approachable. She's always willing to help, is active on the forums, and responds to e-mails quickly. Her tests are fair - no trick questions, everything tested has been covered in detail. I would gladly take another one of her courses.
Robin is one of the best professors I've had. She really cares about the course and she always answers student's questions. The material taught was fascinating too. This course was truly enjoyable and engaging. This course is a lot of work, so put effort in it, and you'll do well.
Prof. Metcalfe is a great example of a high quality professor. Her lectures are interesting and clear. Her tests and assignment are simple and straightforward, no trick questions or ambiguity. She is VERY dedicated to her students which is reflected in her flexibility with deadlines and her quick and detailed response to questions via the Internet.
SHE IS AMAZING IN EVERY ASPECT! THE BEST PROF! GOES ABOVE ALL STANDARDS! I WISH HER STYLE OF TEACHING WAS MANDATORY! EXTRA HELPFUL, EXTRA CLEAR! HER NOTES AND ASSIGNMENTS ARE SPOON-FED TO YOU (EXAMPLES GALORE). I LEFT THIS COURSE WITH A BIG SIGH, KNOWING I WOULDNT HAVE THIS TYPE OF EXPERIENCE IN A COURSE AGAIN. SHE IS SIMPLY THE BEST. EXAMS=STUDY!
A very helpful and informative professor! Assignments are extremely easy and quick to do, and the majority of the course relies on remembering what you learned in lecture (make sure you always take notes on everything!) which isn't so hard because the course is very interesting!
Brutal class. Don't listen to everyone else. I'm an A student and could only get a C+. Exams are worth 60% total and heavy heavy memorization. Assignments and everything else are easy but worth too little.
Incredibly difficult exams.
Boring and hard. I wish I never took it. Do not take this class!
Robin is one of the best professors I've had.
Highly NOT recommended. Never used the text. The tests are typically challenging. Lectures slides are not posted. Lectures are not clear at all; all over the place. Marking scheme is stupid too considering this a NATS course. Too much work. DO NOT TAKE IT if you are an average "A" student. Will bring your mark down.
excellent professor. go to class and you'll get an A - easy. some grade 9 math problems and multiple choice exams.
I just got accepted into Osgoode Law School and dropped this course when I took it.The exams are very difficult and make up about 60% of the final mark. Material is dry and boring. Class average was a 65%. Those who promote it as an easy bird course are widely exaggerating. Take with caution. The environment courses are the easiest NATS to take.
The courses tests are extremely difficult and it's not easy to get an A
Incredible prof, it honestly is a super easy course - she gives you the exam review so you know EXACTLY what you need to study :) an A is easily obtainable!
Fact-exams make up 60% of the final mark and average was a 63-65%. NOT a bird course. Difficult exams and monotone, boring prof. Avoid.
Very helpful professor, fair marker and interesting. History of Astronomy is a good course to take, especially if you're not a science major.
I loved this class, you have to go to lectures and pay attention so if you have no interest in Astronomy don't take it, otherwise it's great for people with no science background!
Great professor. Highly recommended. She tries to engage the class and if you understand the concepts and study for the exams, it's an easy B+. Not a lot of reading either which was good
Her exams are based on the exam review questions she gives and are very easy. She gives many comparable real-life examples to explain concepts to us. Only bad thing I can say is she doesn't post her slides up online and the quizzes (worth very little, .5% each for every chapter) ask about the smallest details from the textbook we never have to use.
Dr. Metcalfe is a very good professor, she is an efficient lecturer and lays a good foundation for any students new to physics, Her assignments and tests are straight forward and she bases her quizzes of them. Highly recommend her if you plan on taking a first year physics class but do not possess the appropriate physics background!
pretty easy if you go to class. all the work she give do it and you will get good mark
This is NOT a BIRD COURSE. Exams and material is very hard to understand.
Best professor I have had on my first year. Managed the course impressively. Nobody can beat her professionalism. Very knowledgeable and well-prepared, passionate and caring, helpful, kind, has great sense of humor makes the material as simplest as it can ever get. Tests fair and straight-forward. Designs the course to encourage student success.
Probably the best professor at York. Great at teaching and explaining course materials. Instantly replies to all email and keeps you updated with course news.
Shes a good lecturer really dumbs down the material and hse gives really easy assignments
You know at first this course seems easy, its normal to average around 90% for all quizzes and assignments, but then the exams come. You literally have to know everything covered and the MC questions are 3-in-1. The last 5 marks are free but god help you with the previous 95 questions. Don't take online unless you review daily or like astro.
Took her course online. Professor Metcalfe makes learning astronomy actually kinda fun! She is passionate about it and really cares that her students understand and learn the material. The course is about history, so be prepared for quite a bit of reading and memorizing! Otherwise, it's an easy A/A+ if you put in some effort.
many chances to make up for bad tests
Made astronomy really interesting to learn about. Very encouraging, and is always sure to be accommodating and understanding when a student is in need of any extra assistance. She's a gem! Great prof!
Easy online class, very interesting lectures on content that might've been dry in the hands of a lesser prof. Test content very clearly given, there are chapter Qs and all test Qs are based on them, memorization heavy. There's some free-mark assignments, and easy projects (do not write 10 pages, write only what she asked for with the least words)
As someone who's never taken physics in high school, Robin really captured my interest with this course. She explained stuff very clearly, and followed theories with examples. She gave quizzes on previous lecture content, which was a good way to make sure students are on track, as well as weekly assignments. The final exam was multiple choice.
One of the best profs at York.
Great professor. Super helpful and nice, really cares what students say about her. The class itself was also very interesting and fun. The reading can be a handful but it's very manageable and fun to read. Take this class :)
great prof, shes able to teach concepts in a way that anyone can understand. also very clear. made me want to switch my major.
Very great prof. Lays out all the course work and due date at the start of class. Midterms and Exams are easy straight from the review questions, Assignments are straightforward, quizzes are based off textbook on smallest things so make sure to read and have it with you when doing quiz. Overall great prof
Metcalfe is an amazing prof who is vey passionate about what she teaches, in a very positive way. Her words are clear and she gets her point through smoothly. Her class is very alive, full of humour and interesting videos & pictures!
One of the best profs
cool as can be
Read the textbook and you'll do well. Be prepared for only multiple choice tests also and they're not the easiest either. the letters to world leaders is fairly easy though and can boost up your grade. If you put in just a bit of effort, you can get an A
best prof EVER
I did
Robin is one of my favorite professors, she is super nice and really cares about the best interests of her students. Robin keeps our online lectures alive with cute video clips that she creates so we can better understand concepts. 4 math exercises, 4 funding proposals, and two exams. Lectures were really interesting and I recommend this class!
I was in her Science of Space Flight and Exploration class and I cannot recommend it enough! She made it accessible and interesting for someone without a science background and was always available in class if you didn't understand something. This was during the strike but she handled it better than most profs which was huge.
As a professor she is absolutely fantastic. Her lectures are very engaging, and she always helps students whenever they have any questions. The course itself was incredibly dry, but her lectures definitely made it a lot better. I'd definitely recommend her as a professor, but definitely would not recommend the course.
She's the whole package. Found her lectures really engaging. Has a way of communicating complicated concepts efficiently and comprehensively. She cares and clearly loves her discipline. In terms of difficulty, show up to every class, do all of your readings easy A
Had her during strike, very understanding. Class was relatively easy, make sure to at the very least skim the readings, as they do pop up on the test! I found the assignments to be marked harshly but tests can definitely bring your mark up if you study. Very similar experience to NATS1570 Online (Exploring the Solar System).
It was such an amazing class. I took it for the NATS credit and I honestly enjoyed every minute of it. Just attend class, focus, and read the book. She's such an amazing lecturer. I highly recommend.
The first day of this course Robin presented this course to be a bird course and inflated the importance of how this course is so I bought into into and dropped my math course thing this will be a easy course. NOT!!! This course is so crap that I think I have never taken a course so hard, non relevant, and boring. Robin is also a boring prof. Dont
Such a great prof who really makes her students appreciate astronomy. Turned out to be one of my favourite courses. Keep up with the work and you'll do fine.
Loved this course! Professor Metcalfe makes complicated concepts easy to understand. She also drops the lowest grade from the tests and assignments. Readings aren't too heavy. If you make a bit of effort, it's an easy A.
I took this as a full-year blended course. One week we'd get lecture videos, the next week we'd do a quiz in class and do an in-class assignment for marks. 2 OPTIONAL tests that replace your lowest quiz marks. If you skim the text and watch the vids you'll ace all the quizzes. She holds your hand with the assignments. Very good at explaining things
Dr Metcalfe is one of the best professors at York. She really knows her stuff, and made a subject I thought I would hate interesting. Definitely recommend!
Might of been my favorite first year course besides PSYC1010. She's super engaging, makes all of the concepts easy to understand; and this is coming from somebody who is nowhere near a science fanatic. She has a very fair grading system. Only tricky thing I found was sometimes tests can be semantically ambiguous. Would highly recommend though!
Great prof and great person. Genuinely cares for students, would definitely recommend her
awesome prof, very easy to get a high mark
Nice, funny, smart. Easy to understand and very patient and accessible.
Prof is great tests were fair however the covid made online testing more difficult than in person
Professor Metcalfe is absolutely one of my favourite profs I've ever had. She has so much passion for her field, and really makes the classes engaging and the material really interesting and fun to learn. I have never wanted to be an astronaut so bad before. In fact, her class is making me highly consider switching to a science major.
DO NOT TAKE HISTORY OF ASTRONOMY. I took this course because it had amazing reviews. However, the exams that were once multiple choice have turned into short answer timed exams WITH diagrams because of covid. The exams are marked very harshly and the prof does not have mercy for students asking for fair assignments/exams. Terrible idea to take this
I feel sabotaged after writing this online exam!! It was so hard and IMPOSSIBLE to write given the time/questions!! The online exam set students up for FAILURE. NATS general education courses should BOOST students averages not wreck them if they dont have a science background! Reviews tricked me. Unfair! I wish I took a different NATS course!!
Please ignore the negative comments below. She assigns videos for you to watch and gives you questions to answer. The exams are COPY PASTED from those questions given. You have to be a lazy student to complain that this course was hard. The same students complain that it's too much math when the prof simply asks you to multiply or divide numbers...
Please don't take this course if you don't have any background knowledge. Although everything in the video posted by professor, the tests are still really really tough. I don't know whether the course was easy or not before the covid-19, but yeah it's definitely hard now.
I have finished this class with an A and I can confirm that this was still the worst class I have ever taken. There is way too much random content and the professor explains in circles. I spent an insane amount of time in office hours to understand the material. The prof also makes you draw diagrams WITH short answers. Take an easier elective.
For being a first year course it was so lecture heavy and requires a lot of time from you. Robin is awesome, her TAs marked unfairly and there were many times Prof Metcalfe would look over assignments and see errors in her TAs marking!!! If you dont work hard you will not do well.
Professor Metcalfe is an awesome professor. She is kind and easily available outside class. She is also always willing to help if you need it. Very organized online course. Highly recommend!
Hardest to work with Prof ive ever had in my four years at university , does not cooperate at all and loves hand written submissions i dont understand why .
Long lectures, horrible online test formats.
I'm loving this class! The material is fascinating & it's great to chat with Robin during online office hours. She's funny & very patient. Online short-answer tests every 2-3 weeks & you need to prep but they are fair if u study. You have to handwrite your tests, I guess to prevent cheating, but that's just like in class so I don't really mind.
Great class. Online format is way better than my other courses. Very organized.
Easily one of the best profs at York. Her format is easy to follow and it doesn't require a textbook. Study the questions she gives you and you'll pass with an A, minimum. You watch around 10 videos every 2 weeks and they're around 2-3 hours in total. One downside is you can only talk to her by going to her office hours.
Unclear audio in lectures, does not grade tests and assignments till the very end and expects students to hand write and scan every answer sheet.
Not a bad class, but DO NOT take it online. She expects 6-7 hand-written long answer questions to be scanned and uploaded all within a 90-minute window for unit tests. Unit assignments are easy. But she does not mark anything. Currently in the class with a week left and we have 3/10 marks back that have been submitted. Ridiculous
Really cares about her students and is fair with her expectations.
I loved listening to her lectures, they were so interesting!. Her grading criteria is very fair so you shouldnt have a problem getting a good grade
This class is ridiculous. 5 units, 1 test and 1 assignment per unit. Questions directly from lecture videos so it isnt hard as long as you take good notes. However she expects us to hand write all answers and upload within a given time period. So you have to move quickly. Also. It takes months to get the marks back. Avoid if you dont like stress.
She did take forever to mark some stuff but she had a family emergency due to Covid & informed us beforehand. To make up for it, she only counts our top 3 grades now which gives everyone an easy A-B. Very sweet, caring and inspiring. I was fine with writing answers on paper, taking pics and uploading but if you're slow you might get stressed.
Insanely easy. Listen to the lectures, take notes and you will succeed. Marks based 5 tests and assignments (1 per module). No tricks, all information comes fro. lecture recordings. If you are willing to put in the effort to take the notes, its a very easy A, and a very possible A+.
Best prof ever. Very caring and knowledgeable.
If you have professor Metcalfe be prepared to meet the best professor at York and to meet such a great person. The BEST!!
No tricks, it's all in the lectures. Listen to lectures, and take notes using the learning goals and you will be fine. She's so nice its crazy. We had our exam and she brought extra pencils and erasers for students. Some people were late and she didn't get upset. She's just a really happy person and a good teacher as well. Totally worth taking!
lectures were VERY long. exams were hard too. get ready to study hard to pass
Robin was an amazing professor for her NATS 1745 online course. The recorded lectures were easy to follow along with. assignments were straightforward and she gave examples that would help you ace them. Could also always reach her at her scheduled office hours and receive feedback and help/clarification
NATS1745 with prof metcalfe isnt a bird course; i wouldn't recommend it unless you can devote a lot of time. the lectures are very long, even when played on 2x speed. her assignments are very easy and she gives you a step-by-step on how to do everything. its her exams that are demanding, even with a cheat sheet, the short answer questions are hard
If you have any interest in space/astronomy and various historical theories, definitely take this course with Robin. Her lectures are clear and she uses great examples to explain theories that may be difficult to grasp. She answers any questions thoroughly during her office hours. Not many assignments, but follow her study guides for exam prep.
Any nats class with professor Metcalfe is a must take. Not only will you get a good grade with ease but it will be a very smooth and fun experience. the class is carefully planned and structured in advance, and will be an absolute blast. she sets the class up to allow for lots of socialization with your peers.Easily one of the best profs at york.
Professor Metcalfe's NATS1530 class is a smooth and fun experience. The workload is manageable, and unstuck ai can be a helpful study tool alongside the course materials. Definitely take this class if you want an easy A.
Prof Robin Metcalfe is a very good teacher but the tests that she takes is exactly to lectures but for this course you must know physics and you should stand on a good English level because the words of this course are professional and related to natural sciences. Also the space activities that take place during class are so heavy to solve with.
