She is very helpful & understanding towards the each & every individual students. Her class is well worth it because knowing how relationship between various social groups, understanding differences & effects of social problems on people make us even more well-rounded & successful in many sense.

First term teaching, tells alot of her own research experienments, gives a REALLy good review before exam, 4/5 essay writing but only 3 will be calculated, should be an esay A if you pay attention in class, i recommend

The work seems like it would be hard but it is not. She explains everything very thoroughly in class; thus, while you are writing your paper at home, you will be surprised as to how much you already know. You have to read the homework for this class and always answer her questions! Best teacher!

Extremely organized prof. very helpfull, answers all questions without an attitude and encourages participation. Her test reviews are the tests, she just lets you know what you need to study and it is impossible to get under a 90 on any of them. enjoyed her class, she is younger and not bad looking.

Very harsh grader. You have to write extraordinary good essays in order to get an A in her class. Take this class if you are a very good essay writer othervise you gonna end up suffering. She puts more emphasis on writing than my English teacher. She watches too much TV.

Great Professor. Had no interest in anthropology but she made the class interesting. Just write a few 3 pg papers and thats it. She stops taking attendance toward the end of the course. If you cant at least get a minimum of a B in this class your a lost cause.

You choose your own topic for research & basically spend half the semester working on the research papers, interviews, survey & revising, it's fun & very helpful for all those who want to get into grad school & almost any future career

She is the best. You have to write 3 papers plus take the cumulative final. Fair grader. After taking her class you will really know the meaning of Anthropology!

Root is great. First I found her assignments difficult, but in the end she helped me so much and taught me so much, that I really appreciate her. I am an ESL student, I did not think I can get an A on a class that is based on writing but I got an A and I learnt a lot and her stories were extremly interesting. Highly recommended. One of the best professor you can imagine, she graduated from U.Penn & Harvard, very intelligent, well rounded & aware of a lot of things. She's tough but u can really sharpen your analytical, writing & communicating skill, definitely credits to any kind of jobs. If you ever have a chance, SOC 3137 is the class u should take before leaving Baruch.

She is a great prof. You have to read the book, don't just follow the powerpoint. 5 papers, but you only have to write 3. Not difficult. Make sure your paper is edited.

HELLO PARTICIPATION! Do not take her if you're very quiet or don't like to talk in front of the room because 80% of your grade will depend on it. Group projects, presentations, participations, etc. Dropped thic class. Smart professor though, interesting subject too.

You guys didn't even give her a chance. I had a great time in her class last semester. She is educated and connects with the students through the stories she tells. She gives a review session where she basically tells you all the questions (and answers)that are on the exams. Take her; most of my classmates got As! Regardless, she's a great person.

She tells you to do 5 pages, highest 3 get graded, 2 lowest dropped, and she gives you answers and questions to final. No other test, seriously, how hard is that? pretty easy class and you should do well if 1)you do most of the readings and 2)you come to class on time. try to bs your way through or roll in 20 min late and she'll make a fool of you in front of everyone, haha. take the class, it's interesting and she knows what she's doing. don't miss the exam reviews- she gives all the ques. ahead of time.

What a wonderful professor. She teaches with enthusiasm and vigor and really gets the content across. Everyone is required to debate in groups once during the semester. Don't be late, pay attention, definitely do the hw and have fun because it is a very interesting subject. You won't regret it.

She is a great professor. She allowed late work to be handed in to her weeks later. It's a lot of writing but its a 4000 level course. Your grade comes from the final paper due at the end of the semester,she also pushed the due date back a couple of days to help out the students. As long as you show effort throughout the semester you'll get an A.

I used to hear all these stories about Anthro. classes being very boring. This was not the case for Professor Root's class. I loved going into class because I felt like I was learning a lot. It helped that the topics were interesting and Professor Root was so enthusiastic about Anthro. Plus, she's funny. That helps too :).

Prof Root is the best teacher I've ever had. I took the honors course but it was pretty easy. I even thought about minoring in anthro. She talks about her fieldwork in Swaziland which is very interesting. Take her if you want to learn something and have fun at the same time.

This class should definitely be taken seriously. When you patch up everything you did for her all semester the page numbers that look unbelievably large seem doable. Do not wait for the last minute to do the paper. Start it a good week before its due if you don't want to literally drive yourself insane like some other people do. Respectful & funny

I came into this class wanting to supplement my passion for Sociology with some knowledge about Anthropology. Prof Root is funny intelligent, and sparks your thought process in a way you didn't know was possible. She is supportive of all her students who come to her with personal interests related to anthro. TAKE HER!

This class is so interesting! The teacher is really funny and tells great stories of personal experiences to help with the lessons. She assigns a lot of reading but always puts power points online and the tests are usually easy. By far the most interesting class for me and many of the students in that class. I definitely recommend this professor.

Amazing class and professor! She's hilarious, smart, and so interesting. Readings and classes are genuinely interesting and tests are based straight off them, no secrets or surprises. Just don't be late, she will completely embarrass you. However, she's a very fair grader and will curve. Overall great, highly recommend it!

DON'T BE LATE. The first test is really easy (she practically gives you the answers), second exam was like 50% harder and final was 25% easier than the 2nd test. You need to really UNDERSTAND the readings to do well. Overall, pretty decent 101 class to do well in.

There is A LOT of reading and she really does engage you with the all the concepts you learn. Do the reading, review for her exams and you should be fine. Just DO NOT be late...

For starters, she is a very sweet woman who really knows her subject. However, you will have to work very hard in this intro class so do not expect an easy A. She is down-to-earth and very approachable as well. Gave xtra-credit throughout the semester which really helped my grade. Hardcore liberal. Remember to think for yourself! Can be confusing.

Very nice lady! Most lectures were interesting and manageable. Textbook is needed. However, you must read and understand the material to get a good grade. Her midterm and final was take home, but still hard even with the textbook and notes by my side.

She's such a sweetheart! Lots of HW, not too much reading (but you still need TB). Material isn't difficult, and her PPs really help. Just listen, suck up to her, do well on MId-TermFinal, and you'll do fine.

Prof. Root is honestly a really sweet professor but has a tendency to talk about her work in anthro quite a lot. MAKE SURE TO DO THE READINGS! She'll pick 2-3 students to explain what the reading was about. 4 online tests, based on the readings and lecture. 3 documentaries, 2 essays/worksheet. Tough grader. Responds to emails fairly quick.

Clearly loves Anthropology and proves it through her lectures. 4Tests were online so basically it was open book. Will call on you for participation so make sure you read the material otherwise she will embarrass you. 3 movies and 2 papers.

She's one of those professors that calls on you, but that's only because she wants you to understand the material being taught. Her lectures may include some of her research--which is really interesting by the way. If you read the textbook, and participate, this class is for you.

I really enjoyed her class, fun, really engaging! Really passionate about her work and knows her stuff. She does want an engaging class and will expect you to participate so you gotta be prepared. If you want to learn, take her class.

She is a great prof! She uses her real life experience to relate it to the class work which made everything easier as a student. The films showed in class, were always relevant to the topic and super interesting!

Honestly, this class is super easy if you do the readings and look at the powerpoints. Four online tests, one short essay. The tests are pretty much word for word from either the textbook or powerpoints. But, you still have to show up because some questions are over things she talks about and emphasizes. Three films in class. Interesting subject!

This professor was wonderful. Being a quite student, she does force you to speak, call you out to answer questions. however, this class is really easy. Just do your readings for the class, participate here and there throughout the semester and you'll be fine.

Professor Root was amazing. She would always relate her experiences to the topic being discussed, which actually helps a lot. There are 4 exams that are ONLINE. Just make sure you read the textbook. She does give extra credit. She HATES lateness. So, be careful.

Test were online. Everything that was discussed during the lecture were on the test. Although she talked about Swaziland it was related to the course and it helped understand the material better.

Professor Root is genuine, hilarious, and passionate about her job. Her lectures are inspiring and entertaining. Her tests are online so you can easily get an A on those. She has a worksheet assignment that is 15% of your grade and she grades that harshly but as long as you have high test grades you're fine.

If you don't participate, she'll make you. ALL ONLINE QUIZZES/EXAMS. Review quizzes are found on quizlet. Stay awake in her class. She calls people out for falling asleep. Be careful with her worksheets. Other than that, take her. Easy A. Kind lady when you get to talk to her and genuinely a wonderful person.

I highly recommend professor root to anybody interested in taking anthropology at baruch.

So I took the Hybrid section, and she assigned two homework assignments a week with long readings. The topics are interesting, but the concepts are very confusing to me. She does "cold call" on students, but you can avoid this by raising your hand to offer an opinion first. Online midterms, but heavily based on the articles you read for hw.

You can take her course only if you are really interested in ANT, otherwise this course can be suffered. 2 HW every week. A lot of materials to read. Both midterm and final are online multiple choices questions but she made her own test. You have to read a lot to pass the test. Again, take her only if you really want to learn anthropology.

Don't take this class if you want an easy A, because it isn't. You'll definitely have to work for it and set aside a few hours each week to complete the assignments. With that being said, definitely take her if you want to be challenged and want to learn more about anthropology. Prof Root is EXTREMELY passionate about anthropology, and it shows!

Professor Root really cares about what she teaches and her students. You definitely have to work for your grade and the readings are long, but if you ever need help with an assignment she always responds to your emails with so much detail. If you don't mind the long readings I would take her class, you'll definitely learn something :)

Might be going into anthro because of Root. Very smart and playful but can be caring and serious. Has real passion for her career. There's kind of a lot of assignments to be honest, with long readings, but all is pretty interesting and engaging so no big deal. Take Root if you get the chance :)

She easily made learning in this class enjoyable. As long as you complete her assigned work which is just the chapters you'll be fine. Make sure to take notes and pay attention to her slides.

Took her a couple years back when we were in person & loved her! She was super strict on attendance and would cold call students but idk why she gets all the hate. Yes the class was a lot of work, but she is really passionate about the subject and you learn some pretty cool things! Recommend if you are genuinely interested in Anthro

I took Root during the Fall 2020 semester. She's really passionate about Anthropology, so I feel like that transfers to the type of hw she gives and how much. Most of the hw's are easy where you answer multiple choice questions off an online textbook. Her tests are paragraph long answers to a couple questions on google drive. Solid teacher.

Prof. Root is very passionate about sociology. You will not be bored of her class. There is a lot of work to do, so be prepared.

A great introductory class that covers all the basics of anthropology. Root makes clear what it takes to succeed early on, and provides proper guidance if you need it. Grades are largely reflective of how well you pay attention to class and your ability to understand the simple textbook. Come in with an open mind, and you'll succeed.

Tough yet passionate teacher. I understand how one would struggle with such a demanding mandatory/intro class, but if you put in a lot, the course will give back a lot. Incredible textbook and fascinating supplementary material. Lectures themselves were somewhat scattered, however Prof. will recognize hard work and praise you for it. Not an easy A.

Absenses are not excusable

She's super sweet. There's homework before every class but they're not hard. Very understanding if you communicate with her. If you don't do work you will fail, but if you do everything, pay attention, and participate sometimes you will pass easy! If you understand how to work an online class you will be fine, if not I wouldn't suggest it though.

Professor Root is awesome. A very interesting personality, if you want a class to sleep through this is not it, if you pay attention and put in the work you will be rewarded. Attend the lectures, do the homework, and participate - you will do well.

She's nice, and the class is interesting if you pay attention. Homework is due before each class—mostly articles with questions embedded so straightforward. Participation is key; you don't need to contribute much, but it helps with grading leniency. Cameras must be on if yours is off or it's just ur forehead she's more likely to call on you.

Everyone's lying here, its a easy class, 2 quizzes on 2 articles *extremely simple* per week, yeah she does cold call and cameras on but ehhh. *also she gives you points to spare, aka like a few hw or zoom passes.

Professor Root wants her students to succeed. She gives free extra credit at the end of the semester and replies to emails quickly. Homework and quizzes are based directly on the readings. If you put in the effort, you'll see results. She's great and always ties topics to real-life examples—she really knows her stuff.

There was homework every week based on the readings. She does some kind of a point system which I did not totally understand. One midterm and final. Easy class if u put on the work.

I learned so much in her course!! Definitely take it if you're willing to put the work in for an invaluable take away.

Taking it on an online class, she honestly cares about if you're listening or not, she wants you to learn about the subject, she cold calls so be on guard and don't be obvious when looking at your phone, or else you will be cold called. If you can handle the lecture you will probably be chill. The midterms and finals weren't that bad.
