Made the class fun and interesting, there was homework and pre-readings but they were easy and only took a couple minutes, if you ever fell behind in them she made sure to check in with you to see if everything was okay was very open to questions in class and answered them right there, just a total peach.
Robin is a great prof! Makes lectures interesting even about boring stuff - keeps it interactive. Definitely would take her course again! Great prof.
Dr. Robin Young is an awesome prof! She cares alot about her students and understands that you have other courses then just hers. There were a few times where we just practiced all the stuff we had learn't so far because she had heard from the other profs that we had a tough week due to midterms in other classes.
A gem in the biology department. She is very caring towards her students. She is the best and when someone doesn't understand something she takes the time to explain it.
Robin is quite rude to students. She is rude in emails and once refused to respond to emails regarding the final exam
Robin is quite unfair to students and seems to mark very differently for the same question. If you email her about your grades, she is unlikely to do anything about it
Robin was okay at the beginning of the semester. She is not a very nice person at all times but she seemed to care a bit. Near the end, however, she began caring less and less. She responds rudely to emails and shows that she does not care.
The group projects were useless. However, the class itself was interesting. Robin has chaotic energy but that made lectures entertaining. The midterm and final were both fair.
During lectures, we would work on worksheets to help understand main concepts, which was helpful for the exams. You really need to understand and know the pathways and cycles to do well. Participation based work was worth 25%, midterm 30% and the final was 45%. She was very helpful and flexible with the course during the covid online transition.
My favourite prof by far, she cares a lot bout her students and teaches in an engaging manner!!!
She's a really good prof and I think her greatest strength is her personality - Lets the chat stay active and engages with students throughout the lecture, making class more enjoyable. Coursework overall is pretty average. She's awesome.
Dr. Young was a cool professor to have. She has a very bright personality which makes class more active and lectures fun. My only complaint would be the amount of outside classwork. Since the class was online I guess it was thought having more assignments would be motivating but it was hard to manage multiple online platforms for just ONE class.
Dr. Young has been an amazing professor. She assures that everything is accessible for students. I think she only gets a bad rep for her sarcasm and people mistake that for being "rude". The workload is very manageable and the midterms are fair. She cares about the students and always interacts with us in class. Take her class!
Overall Robin Young was a great prof. She made the lectures fun all while learning. Her class was by far my favourite class and would definitely recommend her.
Would never take her class again. She is unprepared (complains of completing lectures at 2am night before). won't respond to emails about final exam until AFTER classes start next term. Said she "plans" on replying slow. Considering this is our only way of communicating, this is unacceptable. Her tests are unfair and marked harsh
Dr. Young is a really awesome prof and her lectures are really enjoyable. She's funny and the chat during her class is great. The only bad thing is the amount of work outside class and that she is not great at responding to emails. I didn't do most of the weekly readings because they were overwhelming. Would take class again just for the lectures.
all over the place, way to many website made it hard to stay on top of assignments and quizzes. when emailing responses are unclear. lectures are hard to follow and get sidetrack easily. Homework website was more frustrating then helpful. tests were not a good representation of what was learned in class. answer keys for practice problems not given.
Really good prof. The lectures were really great and the marking was fair. The midterms weighed for a lot and they were difficult though. Study your diagrams! She's just very kind and if you come to class early you can talk to her and she cares about how we're doing. The class average was an A (80).
She really cares for people who's taking biology for the first time in forever. Lectures were designed to make biology seem less daunting. I had fun with the activities she rolled out for us and the lectures were smooth. Would definitely take her class again if I have the chance to. Labs were straightforward too, just make sure you know your stuff.
Dr Robin was amazing! Shes very easygoing and open to students. Lectures were very clear, the slides were really useful for studying and the activities we did in class (specially for unit 3) were really fun. We didnt have a lot of assignments, only the website for the readings was frustrating.
Dr. Robin's test formats are very difficult to work with. The midterms and final are 100 times harder than any of the material done in class. It's extremely difficult to follow her notes if you do not go to the lectures.
Dr. Robin has been my favourite prof so far! I feel like she explained the content really well in lecture and I appreciated that they were recorded if you couldn't be there live. Doing the weekly readings could be a bit tedious, but other than that I have no complaints.
She was a good teacher and was generous with testing during this pandemic. Personally, I felt the tests were somewhat easy considering I did not really study for them. Overall she is great and the grade breakdown of her course is really helpful towards your grade.
Robin was a great prof. She explains things in great depth and includes examples and practice problems for us to work through in class. I learned so much in this class from simply attending her lectures (of course, you still have to study for the midterms). Highly recommended
Robin is a very good teacher, I found the class very easy and she spells out lot of things and the tests are exactly the same for most topics. She does a lot of practice questions, but had us do annotations on the textbook which was tedious and useless. the midterms were multiple choice.
The lectures are more than just a rehash of the textbook + slide information. She is passionate about what she's teaching and provides clear learning objectives.
She's an amazing and caring professor that's more than happy to entertain questions outside class time. Her tests are fairly easy as long as you study since there are no surprise questions. Only thing annoying was annotating the textbook, which wasn't helpful at all.
She is an amazing professor who is great at teaching. She is very accessible outside of the class, and cares that her students learn. The exams are challenging, but are marked accurately. The information delivered is clear and the Professor takes time to hold extra study sessions with herself, not the SL leader. There were a lot of SL sessions too.
she's pretty fun, the topics aren't always the easiest to understand but she does a great job, beware tho she gets really excited about plant cells and might yell into the mic when talking about chloroplasts.
Dr. Robin is an amazing professor. She tries to explain the topic as much as she can an relates it to real life as much as possible. She's very upbeat and real, and emphasizes understanding and applying content instead of memorizing and regurgitating it. Love this prof!
Robin is one of the worst prof I ever had. Do not waste time and go to her lectures they are pointless she does not know how to explain or teach, she expects you to know all the hard material, she does not walk you through steps. Her Midterms and Final are all written problems analysis and disgusting, worst exams I have taken in my life,
Robin was an ok prof. No need to avoid her but there is lots of content quizzes and pointless textbook readings, they help your mark but it does seem like a waste of time. Tests are all multiple choice which is alright if you are good at that, but they are not necessarily easy. Almost impossible to fail due to the weighting distribution of things.
I really struggled to stay focused in Dr. Youngs lectures. She tends to get side-tracked on topics that are seemingly meaningless and her lecture slides are not detailed enough for what she demands on her multiple choice midterms. The grade distribution for the course makes it easy to get a high mark.
I liked her. Shes so funny, caring and sincere. She makes her expectations clear, her tests are fair (maybe on the more difficult side). Lots of area for easy marks like with quizzes and clicker questions. The perusall text is pointless and a waste of time but another easy grade. Shes SO engaging though and very passionate about biology. Shes great
Lots of clicker questions and doesn't explain things well (if at all). The midterms were EXTREMELY hard and the questions were related to very specific things. She lets you have cheat sheets though but they didn't help much in my opinion. She seems like a nice person and has a great sense of humor but I would never take a class with her again.
I loved her. She's really funny and personable. I love how she relates her life experiences, plants and animals to the concepts. Tests were challenging but not hard. Make your study aids tailored to the "Learning Objectives". All test questions relate back to those. It was fun and I would love to take one of her classes again.
Robin does not respect students' time whatsoever. Her classes have marked lecture attendance/participation, despite not teaching material in lectures. Your notes come exclusively from your own textbook readings, something you ultimately do not need a prof for. Additionally, prepare yourself for weekly quizzes and midterms with poorly built figures.
You'll definitely do well if you study. The questions on the midterm are all very similar to previous clickers and weekly quizzes. She also allows a cheat sheet. Only thing annoying was weekly readings on perusall which barely helped.
As long as you listen and study the lecture slides you will do well on the tests. Her lecture slides are very detailed and useful. You can tell she genuinely cares about teaching her students and she always has a postive attitude
Dr. Young is an amazing professor and I'd definitely recommend it for anyone in their first year. She's very considerate when teaching and often has cute little messages in her exams that never failed to put a smile on my face. Generally a very caring person and a bubbly personality. Very helpful outside of class too, lots of extra help sources.
Robin is a wonderful professor. You learn the bulk of the content alone, but class really helps you synthesize your understanding and get an idea of test questions. Lots of assignments take weight off the exams. She's very accesible outside of class as well, and gives helpful feedback. If you participate and put in the effort you'll do fine!
Run. For. The. Hills. What had the potential to be an incredible course with a fun group project was completely ruined by subjective 'problem-solving' based exam questions which could not have deviated further from the lecture material content provided. Fun professor, excellent course shell, absolutely HORRIBLE exams expecting you to be an expert.
Content in the course is interesting but the way its structured and taught by her isn't. There are long pre readings you are expected to read before class.Class time isn't spent on learning but rather questioning students about the reading. There is also a group project in this course. Exams are tough. She has attitude if you don't know the answer.
Heavy lectures, tough tests, good teacher.
Dr. Robin is a good lecturer, I enjoyed the class but did not enjoy the group project. For her exams, they can be tough if you don't know how to study for them. They are all written exams but if you thoroughly do all the perusall worksheets+ in-class worksheets+ study the pre-readings you will do well.
Robin was a great prof and kept lectures engaging. She was super enthusiastic and accessible after class. It was a heavy course load, and tests were detailed, but she helped out where she could. Would def take her class again!
Dr. Robin is so awesome, she made this class so engaging! Textbooks were included in the course as part of our weekly readings
I loved Dr. Young!! She does assign lots of homework but everything she assigns you genuinely helps with your understanding of the course. If you do the homework you will do well. Class attendance is mandatory, but if you miss a class or two it is not a big deal. She's friendly, approachable, and funny but also very no nonsense.
Dr. Robin is a fun teacher, however she is definitely not approachable. Her unit tests are very tricky and the the test averages are always around 60%. Dr. Robin allows cheat sheets, but note anything in this class is fair game. Her exams are tough, but there are content quizzes and readings to help boost your mark.
She makes you feel stupid when you ask questions and her lectures are pointless might as well watch YouTube videos on the concepts and read the textbook a lot better than her convoluted explanation.
Overall a good prof. If you complete and study all the clickers, lectures slides/worksheets, and quizzes you should get a good grade (doesn't post the worksheet or clicker answers, so attendance is a must). Not a very approachable person though, and raising your hand in lectures will result in you crying afterward (not very slay)
I definitely liked cell biology more with Dr. Young than BIOL 116. Make sure to do the perusal worksheets because these are REALLY similar to the exam questions. Be sure to be able to do the worksheets as well and you'll do great. She does a good job of teaching the content, though the group assignment was kind of subjective/not fun.
Dr. Young is super passionate about her work but is also super scary sometimes. Her lectures are informative, if you do the homework, but if you don't they're extremely confusing. There are lots of opportunities to boost your grade but the exams are really tough. LOTS of outside class work required.
Lectures can be hard to keep up with and lecture slides aren't great. She provides notes for each units which is very helpful. Do the practise problems. Midterms and final are made up of very specific questions that were related to problems from the textbook. She was a pretty hard marker on tests if you don't write exactly what she's looking for.
Dr Young is a great person but not the best teacher, she assumes that you will pursue research in cell biology and wants to think like a professional researcher. I did enjoy the content but she is very tough marker. Make sure you understand all Perusall problems and go over the content before the exams also go to her tutorials!!
While kind, Robin can be harsh and forget to set expectations. Readings and weekly quizzes are tedious but easy marks if you collaborate with friends. Exams are harder than the content quizzes. Towards the end of the semester she was a little ruder but honestly if you study you'll do okay. Free textbook & Memory aids for exams on the bright side.
be prepared to lose marks on midterm because she looks for the most specific things and if your answer doesn't have that then you lose marks, got an 80 on the first midterm but if she wasn't looking for small specific things to be said (which the questions are broad sometimes so this is hard) could've easily been a 94...
There was a lot of mandatory work, such as textbook annotations and weekly quizzes, which was a bit annoying, but they helped with the test. The worksheets are really important when it comes to testing and the content quizzes are good to use for studying. However, I found she was not very empathetic towards students.
I am sorry but Dr. Robin is probably one of my least favourite professors I have ever had. She made me hate biology in first year, and now again in second year. I am changing my whole major because of her. She is a very harsh marker with very cryptic comments and I do not find her feedback helpful. Maybe her teaching style isn't for me lol.
Dr Robin is enthusiastic, but this is a tough class to do well in. Lecture content is the same as the pre-readings so you don't learn anything new. MTs are graded in a very cryptic way, you'll lose points or get a 0 if you don't say the exact answer. If you like cell bio you'll probably enjoy this, but I don't reccomend taking it as an elective.
Robins class is dreadful, the ability to sit through her boring distasteful class at 5-6:30 was impossible. Her marking is flawed, if you dont say her exact preferred response, you won't get the credit, even if you mentioned 3 additional correct points. She brags about how nobody has ever gotten an 100 on her midterms, I wonder why, poor teaching?
Horrible. Robin sucks at teaching, read the online notes to teach yourself. Don't understand? Consult the online notes because Robin won't help at all. Makes herself seem nice and caring but is actually so rude on multiple occasions. Marking on midterms is crazy specific for a written midterm. No answer key to perusall to help guide you either.
The tests for this class was incredibly hard!! Each multiple choice is choose all that apply without saying so and so it makes the grading weird and hard. I do appreciate the assignments to carry your grade a bit but make sure for exams you study the weekly quizzes and worksheets not the perusall!! Perusall does not help at all on the exams!
Midterms are hard to get a very good grade on. Studying lectures is not enough. Did not have enough time given on the final exam. Study aids help decently for MTs and Exam. You can get a good grade in this class if you get 100% on all the extra stuff, such as textbook readings --> only good thing about her class. I dont like her as a person either.
Studying notes not enough for good mark on midterms, need textbook studying also. Textbook readings help mark. I just couldnt do well on her midterms no matter how hard I studied, IDK why.
I am in first year, and she made me hate the entire idea of being in an upper biology class. She says everything yet nothing at the same time, and her lectures don't add to your studying at all! The quizzes are not easy, and we have to ask each other for help to even get decent grades. Left clueless and dumb after her classes. Wish me luck smh.
Ive never had a prof care so little about students. Have a content question? too bad, she doesn't want to explain it to you. Have a question in class? get ready for an attitude-filled response. Be ready to teach yourself everything from the textbook and YouTube because lectures are 90% iclicker clouds (which frequently don't function properly)
Doing the pre-reading work is essential, for understanding terms (otherwise you'll be very lost). The wording of questions is often tricky, but she does provide lots of worksheets, which are worded similarly to questions one might find on midterms. iclicker was used each class.
I really liked her and honestly think she as a teacher should be rated higher, but the course was less accessible if you have any accommodations where you might miss lectures. I found I could catch up though. She doesn't post completed lecture slides after, so make a friend in the class. Midterms were definitely accurate to content covered.
Robins lectures are engaging and make you apply what you've just learned using iClicker. The midterms match up with the material learned, but you may need to readjust your expectations for grades. Along as you're average or above, you're doing well! There aren't any assignments for this course other than textbook readings, which are very helpful.
I love Dr. Young. She is smart and funny and seems to really love biology. Go to lectures and fill in the slides. That's the only way to actually get the notes and she doesn't post ways to get them otherwise. The readings are meh required but not THAT important (free text). She doesn't like interruptions. Tests are fair. SL worksheets help a lot.
She might seem a little intimidating but she's a great professor. Very good at explaining concepts and making you practice them with clickers, don't miss lectures tho because she will only post her blank slides and definitely do the worksheets!! The exams are pretty fair.
Dr. Young is a knowlegable prof and did a good job of trying to keep the lectures intresting. She was always very clear about what was on a midterm or the final. Wasn't the biggest fan of her as a prof and didn't really make students feel comfortable asking questions, she also made some topics seem a lot more conviluted than they needed to be.
Want to ask questions or participate? Be ready for the biggest rip into your confidence ever. Dr. Young made me dread biology and fear profs as a first year. She seems to care in all communications but doesn't seem to execute the same feelings in person. Exam question answers (multiple choice) were likely all correct but dependent on the question.
Lectures were tough to get through and often felt unengaging, lots of information presented as common sense. Don't ask questions or talk during class, otherwise you will be called out and made to feel like less. Very minimal exam prep, often practice questions with no answer key provided (even when asked). Read and keep your head down, you'll be ok
Dr. Young had very clear lectures that were overall engaging but her test formatting is horrific. The cheat sheet is never helpful as her finals consist of conceptual questions that are choose the most correct answer. It was way too subjective for a STEM class and made it nearly impossible to succeed. Very frustrating.
Worst Prof ever! she is just rude and does not care about your success in this class. She is not willing to help you in any way possible and just doesn't ever care to help out any students as she gives off the most unfriendly and unapproachable energy.
Dr. Young was an amazing lecturer had great PowerPoint slides for referring to when studying for the midterms. I definitely recommend to GO TO THE LECTURES and pay attention as the worksheets were exactly the content that the midterms had. However, the final was not the case as it contained lots of theoretical questions. Overall, a great prof!
Dr. Young's lectures are quite thorough, but she has the most difficult tests. She is often rude and calls out on students in class if they try to leave during the middle of the lecture. I would not take her class again unless I'm required to.
I don't really like Dr. Robin's teaching style, but know others that have enjoyed her classes. In order to do well in this class go to lectures, do the learning outcomes, and MOST importantly put effort into the perusall questions. Midterms are completely short answer and marked very hard. Make an appointment with her if you need help in the class.
If it is not absolutely necessary for you to take this class, don't. She expects you to understand complex concepts after one mention and is judgemental if you ask questions. Exams are brutal and require specific answers for full marks. She is cruel in emails and in person if you are seeking help. The odds are not in your favour, but good luck.
Dr. Young's lectures are engaging and if cell biology interests you they should be enjoyable. Tests feel more like reading comprehension and writing assessment than testing your knowledge of cell bio sometimes. It's tough/requires a lot of work but pay close attention to in class worksheets and practice questions on perusall and you'll do fine
Overall a decent professor. Lectures were often 'self-guided' we would be given a worksheet on that day's material and asked to complete it before being taught the material, which was futile and frustrating. For studying, go off the content quizzes and learning outcomes, don't rely solely on lectures.
Prof. Young excelled at explaining concepts in a very easy to understand fashion, and although she was a bit intimidating and at times, a bit hard to approach, it was clear that she wanted you to succeed. Beware: Midterms and final are only multiple choice, choose all that apply, so it's easy to lose points from dumb mistakes.
Dr. Young may honestly be the most intimidating person I have met. Her teaching is understandable, and you can succeed in her course with effort. However, I would prefer not to take her course again solely because she is so unopen.
All tests are multiple-choice, but there are randomly choose all that apply questions, and it is not stated which questions are this way. Her lectures were good but she explains things in a bit of a confusing way. She doesn't post filled-out slides, so you need to go to class as much as possible.
This course moves very quickly and there is a lottt of content covered. Don't let the cheat sheets fool you- exams are all over the place and she does not tell you when a question is select all that apply. If you selected 3 out of 5 options and one was wrong, the whole question is wrong rather than getting part marks.
Brings a good energy into the lectures and we had weekly quizzes to review material, the online textbook was free with weekly pre lecture readings which do take a couple of hours. Posts all her notes and extra videos on topics, friendly and encouraging, enjoyed taking the class.
I t enjoyed Dr. Robin Young's lectures and thought her way of teaching to be quite engaging. Her midterms were fair and I felt as though I knew what to expect for both. However, her final exam felt as though it was on a new level without warning. It was a challenging exam that applied knowledge that was skimmed over in class. Study everything.
Dr Young demeans the reputation of UBC. She is rude, dismissive, and unprofessional, especially through 1-on-1 emails. Her exams are worded horribly. She does not want you to succeed. She has a PHD in bio, yet somehow taught transcription + translation WRONG (verified by HER SL leaders and the BIOL 131 prof). If you can avoid her as a prof, DO SO.
Robin Young's class is not for the weak. The only reason why i did well was because of my high school bio teacher and relying off my high school knowledge. Her tests are very application heavy. Don't bother reading perusall, just get the 2/3 and move on, be prepared for a killer final that tests things never covered in class.
Dr. Young is a good professor. It takes a lot of effort to do well in her class, but you will learn a lot. This course sets you up to do well in third and fourth-year courses. You have to do the readings before if you want to take anything away from the lecture. The textbook is free and amazing.
I loved Dr. Robin! Very passionate about biology and honestly the class was quite easy! Tests are all multiple choice, which can be annoying but she does give at least 2 free marks per exam. She also is very adamant on participation during lectures and will wait until someone from further back in the room answers her questions.
Her lectures are tough but informative. The worksheet she gives you are very similar to the test content. For her tests, she never explicitly states whether a question is select one are select multiple, so watch out.
Dr. Young in BIOL 430 was awesome! She is an awesome person and super approachable. BIOL430 is very group work based, so if that's not your style, RUN. This class wasn't lecture heavy so I can't speak to her lecture style. She is super straight forward and funny, lays expectations out on the table, and just wants you to give it your best effort.
Not a fan at all. One of my least favourite profs i've had.
Coming into this class from first year, I was so terrified, however, Dr. Young made this class so much more enjoyable. The content itself is interesting and her format of the lecture, clickers, and worksheet enhanced my learning experience. As all the reviews state, do the Perusall questions as they really help with preparing for the exams.
Minimal details are provided on the slides, but students are expected to know everything for the midterms and finals.
Dr. Robin really grew on me this year. She's passionate about cell bio, her teaching style is clear, and she gives out a bunch of exam-type questions as homework. There is a large group project component so CHOOSE YOUR GROUP CAREFULLY. She also wrote the textbook, so it's super useful for the class.
Dr. Robin is super passionate about cell bio, but her lectures could be a little confusing. Recommend reading the textbook before class to better understand.
I love Dr. Young. She is more than willing to be challenged on her thinking and is open to being asked any kind of question so long as it relates to biology. I recommend listening to what she says instead of writing everything straight off the slides and doing the Perusall readings. Would definitely take a course with Dr. Young again
honestly super unprofessional
I have had Dr. Young twice and I can truly say that she DOES NOT care about her students success and is just all around unprofessional. If you email her a question, the likely response you will get is none, or a statement telling you to look on canvas. There is truthfully so much more I could say about her, but there isn't enough space.
The worse prof ever. She does not teach the same way she tests, and she marks so hard. Unless you can write everything she has in mind, you will get the whole question wrong. She has no mercy. She sucks at explaining and honestly she does not care. Averages for this intro class are so low because she can't teach! Don't take this class with her
She is very nice and supeer passionate which made her lectures very engaging. lots of reading but it is worth it!
Be prepared, good grades depend on reading her mind.
usually always understand bio dont know what happened this year the tests were so bad and hard for me to understand.
she's very passionate about biology and likes to joke around but she can get rly off topic and half the time wouldn't finish all the lecture slides. the midterms were ok but the final was brutal. I learned a lot of the content in highschool so I was able to do fine but she'd test on a lot of application based questions or on stuff she didn't teach
I ABSOLUTELY ADORE DR. YOUNG. She is so funny and so easy to get into contact with. I thought her lectures were great. the midterms and final are kind of difficult but I thought fair. the one thing that kind of annoyed me was that she wouldn't post completed slides for lectures, so if you miss one you're kinda outta luck. also sooo many iclickers
I would never take her again. She is bad at her job and acts as if it is her personal life mission to make you fail.
Dr Young is a good professor, especially for people who like biology. She mainly just reads off her slides, which can be boring, but they are well-organized compared to other professors. She allows a cheat sheet for midterms and finals, and all of the tests are multiple choice. There are many resources provided to help students do well.
This class is very difficult. The tests are based on your understanding of the material. While the lectures are only there to explain the basics. You'll need to spend time using the other material she provides. If you do that, you'll succeed. Focus on understanding the material and applying it to the concepts; don't just memorize the information.
