I had a wonderful time in this class, which is impressive seeing as it is the type of class I would generally skip

She was great! I enjoyed the class and learned a lot. She is why I took more English classes!

the course load was easy. two essays in the first semester, and two essays in the last semester (only 1 research paper) + 1 oral presentation. not a heavy assignment load at all!

She is a great teacher. She always sparked interesting class debates. She is very caring of her students and shes a fox too!!!

Excellent Prof! Very understand and caring towards her students. She doesn't make you feel like an idiot when you ask her questions.

A treat to work with and the fact that she actually cares is a huge bounus! Plus she's mildly sarcastic so that makes class a lot more interesting. I'd definetly recommend her.

Best English teacher i have ever had. Never missed one class because it was never boring. Always pick interesting books to read. Very fair marking. 2 thumbs up.

Not a fan of her book selection but still didn't mind her as a prof. Very helpful outside of class, had a seperate schedule just for student essay help (structuring and editting). Exams hard if you don't keep up with readings as you need to be able to identify paragraphs from them and write on them among other things.

She's very helpful on your essays and provides a great deal of feedback that if used wisely, will boost your grade. Having said that, she always looks for errors to dock off on your essays and her midterm and finals were the hardest out of every english prof. Definately not enough time and you had to write on 12 diff selections in two hours.

She had a good sense of humor but had a hard time keeping the class interested. Never gave enough time for exams and she was a very harsh marker on essays. I think she expects a little too much from 1st year students.

Incredibly hard marker of essays, and definitely gave the hardest marks of any profs I've heard of. Also had hardest final/midterm. I helped a friend all year who was terrible at english (she was in a different section, not this prof) and she ended up doing better than I did...go figure. Try not to end up her class if you want an A.

Fantastic Professor. She offers lots of help and if you take her up on it, you'll do well. Really enjoyed the class.

Her class is always fun. She has good expression in class to keep you awake. Just go to her class and listen. She is a good marker as well. she will never reject your idea even thought ur idea is totally oppsite to hers. She is an awesome prof!!

She is an extremely nice prof and she is always willing to offer suggestions and offer help if you ask. She is very friendly and was accepting of ideas even if they were radically different then her own. She treated all students with respect. I highly recommend Robyn!

Dr. Fowler is an amazing prof. She is a very fair marker and her constructive feedback helps you appreciate the progress you have made over the year. Almost a year after taking her course, my professors continue comment on my analytical and writing skills on all my papers- a skill I feel was fully developed thanks to Dr. Fowler. Highly Recommended!

Extremely helpful in and out of class. Fair marking, good comments to help you improve. I found the tests to be kind of hard to finish, as there's a lot of writing though. I liked her reading selections for the most part too. Enthusiastic and knowledgable. Overall, an excellent instructor. Highly recommended.

Robyn Fowler is a great instructor I hate english and she kept it interesting and fun for the entire class.... not much work a few essays but mainly just class discussions.... HIGHLY recommended

Dr.Fowler is the best choice for 1st yr. Eng.What worked for me in her class was making a good impression--writing an impressive 1st paper.I got A+s on my 1st 3 papers and when I wrote an awful last paper the night before it was due,I still got a B+ on it(which I totally didn't deserve).Robyn is a very intelligent,kind,elegant and beautiful woman.

A great prof. She is incredibly helpful out of class and really clear with her suggestions. Grading is a little tough, but still fair. Very important to show up to class, because it makes studying really easy for the finals. Memorization is pretty important, but not on a lot of info. Great class, great prof

Dr. Fowler is the best prof you can ever get for 1st year english. She made the transition between high school and university very smooth for us! Extremely helpful outside of class and is always willing to help. 100% recommendation!

Best first year University prof I had!! She made English interesting and was very helpful on improving my essays. Class isn't boring but if you miss a class it's not a big deal. NO MIDTERM in her class was nice as well. Highly recommended!!!!!

Really great prof, highly recommended. Dr. Fowler is amazing for 1st year english. Her classes are full of discussion and she gives careful, individual comments on your papers so that you can make revisions.

She was wonderful, I have always hated english and thought I was terrible at it, but I ended up doing very well! She has conferences which are very helpful for essays, and uses a portfolio system which I found less stressful!

I loved her. She's highly intelligent and not at all pompous. Took a lot of time to help us to improve on our writing. You must go to class since participation is worth a lot in her class. I went down a letter grade because I missed a particular class.

She is a good prof, not at all intimidating. She gives you so many times to improve your writing, and it is only due at the very end of term. The anthology was boring, but the novel was good.Good class for first year English students. She is really nice and marks fairly, she even tells you what to change to get a good mark.

Robyn Fowler is a very fair professor who provides helpful feedback that will get you an A. Classes are interesting as she encourages discussions and often discusses the major ideas in each work.

she's an amazing prof! the only thing that kind of sucks in this class is that it's alot of work like inksheds, peer editing, conference, cover letter, portfolio, etc. she is extremely helpful though! I really enjoyed being in her class ! :)

Dr. Fowler has won awards for her excellence in teaching undergraduates. She is great, so do not miss out on taking a class from her. Wonderful human being.

If you are an engineer, make sure you enrol in her class. She picks readings that are interesting and relevant, and keeps class discussions entertaining. Assignments are not hard and she is very helpful if you have any questions. She is a wonderful teacher and person.

Best Prof I have had yet at the university. She understands her students and works hard to keep everyone interested and engaged. Take classes with her WHENEVER possible!!

She is SUCH a great teacher.. I cant even explain it in words. Not only is she nice, but also very helpful. Dr. Fowler is probably one of the best english teachers I've ever had.

She was very nice and all, but also very subjective. Although I ended up with a good mark, I did not like her that much... But then again, everyone else in my class did, so I guess it was just me.

The best prof I've had! Honest. She is incredibly helpful and her expectations are straight-forward. She uses a contract and if you follow it you will do great. Essays are short and the final was super easy. If I could take her in every class, I would.

She seems a bit intimidating in the first class, with her inksheds, contract and portfolio, but she's not too bad, and gives you plenty of room to improve. She's really helpful. Her class requires a lot of work, but don't complain you're in university...so grow up. I would recommend this prof!

I almost failed my high school English diploma...I finished with an A- in her class. Nuff said, she's fantastic. Highly recommend

I like her as a person, she's very nice and motherly however I felt like her lectures she'd read to us were basically taken off of SparkNotes or something and just read to us. You better be good at taking notes from ear because she does not post notes at all. Lots of reading, some texts were boring but others were fine.

She's a very kind and caring prof. Takes the effort to know her students' names the first class. Nice sense of humour too. Her lectures were sometimes dry, though - she tended to rely heavily on notes and just read from them. Interesting texts, for the most part. Fair marker, and gives good feedback.

Infuriating. The short stories and poems were very engaging, and had SO MUCH potential. I only enjoyed 2 of the novels, however. Over all, the course structure was too didactic. Very low expectations and level of discourse. Lectures were read from notes. The course just didn't have that energy that leads to mind blowing epiphanies. Don't do it.

Dr. Fowler is wonderful. She's not super easy but she's fair and gives a lot of helpful feedback. If you put the effort in, it's not hard to do well. She's also a really nice woman and not intimidating at all.

Lectures were dry. Too many different notes: eClass, lectures, reading books and lectures on the books, discussion. Outlines for essay were unclear and her grading techniques are weird and comas and punctuations cost marks. There were 2 examples for exam. She did not want students to be prepared for exam.

She is a good prof if you like not receiving a single mark until the day of your final. It's rather worrying how you don't know where you stand in the class. You do portfolios that she marks at the end of your class. Fowler is really nice, but I hated the marking system.

Dr. Fowler is amazing. It is difficult not to do well in her class because she gives you so many opportunities to improve and tells you exactly how to improve. Attendance is mandatory as it counts for participation and there are specified inkshedding days, but class is very easy going. She is very cute and nice. Highly recommend!

Hmm. I can see why people love this prof as she's really easy, but her lectures lacked depth and often felt EXTREMELY structured. Definitely more of a first year prof I think. But you can probably get a pretty good mark and she's definitely better than than the other CanLit profs.

I found her lectures to be relatively engaging. We had a decent amount to read. For me, though, I found her marking to be sort of tough. Out of all the 300-level ENGL courses I've taken, she's marked me a lot harder than anyone else. She's willing to help you a little if you see her, but I can tell you that there are easier profs out there

Fowler is an inspirational professor. She knows what she is doing and will help you throughout your learning experience. Don't doubt her though, she is quick.

One of the best profs I've had. Her marking system seems intimidating at first, but it's actually refreshing. She wants you to become a better writer, and spends a lot of time with each student helping them to improve. She really has a passion for teaching, and it shows.

For any of the engineers reading this, TAKE HER CLASS. Many people dread having the take the ENGG-lish elective but she actually made it interesting, engaging, and relevant to our education. I actually feel like I got something out of this class. It ends up being a pretty easy class as long as you involve yourself with it.

I enjoyed this prof but didn't like her marking system. You didn't get a grade for your term work until the day before the final so you have no idea where you stand in terms of a grade for the whole semester. However, there are mandatory conferences where she goes over your paper with you individually and that's helpful. Good experience.

I found her class to have an excessive amount of reading, writing, and unnecessary assignments. It was a very time consuming class, but fair to high marks were given. We had reading and grammar quizzes, which seemed to be tedious for a university class. I would recommend her class if you have a little extra time on your hands.

Wow, best prof I've had at the U of A yet! She's interesting and funny, and very helpful and gives reasonable grades. I highly recommend!

I believe everyone can succeed in her class as long as you participate and stay on her good side. Make sure to show up on time to class and pay attention to her expectations of handing in papers. Make sure you pay attention to your contact you signed and everything will be a breeze!

I don't have anything but good things to say about Dr. Fowler. You won't regret taking a class with her. Any prof can be a good lecturer in terms of having a good grasp on the material, but Dr. Fowler goes beyond that. She puts in so much time and effort getting to know her students personally because she actually cares. Highly recommended!

Really enjoyed her class. I was hesitant to take the class, but she made it humorous and interesting. I found myself wanting to learn more about the material at the end of term. Very helpful, and a fair and clear marker.

Free writing assignments made no sense

Dr. Fowler is a great prof! She does essay conferences where she goes over your essay before you hand it in at the end of the semester and gives great feedback. I would say she is a fair to generous marker and really cares about her students success. She gives marks for participation so show up to class!

I liked her. She was a good prof but isn't very helpful in explaining the materials she wants you to do such as the inksheds. She expects for you to know them and learn it yourself which isn't hard but I still would have liked a bit more explanation in the beginning. Her conferences are great but she is a tough grader.

Engineers! You want to take this class with Dr. Fowler. She has an awesome personality and youwill not regret it. She teaches well, marks fairly and makes you want to be there. Our class average was a 3.5 so that should tell you something

Fowler was phenomenal. She was very dedicated to student's work and was very very kind. Participation marks come from discussion posts online, but just doing them gets you the mark. Super funny in a quirky way. Knows her stuff. Lots of readings- but they're interesting. Highly recommend this prof and this class for Engl credits!

Dr. Fowler is a good prof! She really cares about students'success and will provide you many useful tips if you see her. Office hours helped a lot. Will take her classes again.

Very good prof. If you're taking ENGL 103, take her class! A hilarious prof who makes lectures very interesting. Always come to class as participation marks can aid your grade. Accessible outside her class for office hours and helps you to think critically about your research.

One of the better teachers in the department even though her grading criteria could be clearer. Good lectures. Exams are challenging, so do lots of review. If you're torn, it's prob worth taking a class with her instead of a less experienced professor b/c her feedback is great and you'll get more out of it.

Engineers you will be happy to have Dr. Fowler as a prof! I was definitely dreading taking English at a university level but this course (which is specifically for engineers) was quite easy and made to be enjoyable. Dr. Fowler seems to really care about her students and gives great feedback!

Dr. Fowler is an amazing English teacher. Her lectures are engaging, she's hilarious, and she is very flexible with essay topics. Her feedback on papers is extremely helpful and she always wants to see her students succeed. This course was in spring consisted of 2 essays, 1 presentation, and a final exam. We read 2 novels and supplementary articles

Great Professor who will know you by your name. As an engineering student in Fowler's ENGL 199 class, English seemed to be the only easier thing out of high school. If you are in Fowler's class, take it seriously for an easy GPA booster.

The easiest english course for engineers!

Best English professor I've ever had! Dr. Fowler was incredibly kind and caring, and gave amazing feedback on assignments. She even met with each of us individually to go over our final paper draft and gave great feedback. We had to read 3 books over the semester, but they were all super enjoyable books. BEST English professor ever!!

Fantastic prof. Super engaging and asks great questions in class so we can participate. Three amazing novels that were easy to get through. Very fair quizzes based off of the novels. We wrote one essay throughout the semester. Had to stay on top of forum posts. This class was manageable and enjoyable. Love her and her class! Highly recommend.
