Dr. Nearn was a great professor. Her class is very detailed and challenging. She will help with any questions you have and offers many open lab sessions and offers a lot of possible points in the overall grade. Lecture is a must because she does not do study guides and the tests cover a ton of material. Go to class and pay attention you will pass.
I took bio with her last semester. Her grading is a little tough but she's very thorough and willing to help you out if you need it. Communication is key with her and if you find yourself failing, she will dedicate time for you. Only if you're willing.
She is a tough one, but you can tell she wants you to understand the material and pass. She is passionate about Bio! Has no problems with students asking questions. You WILL get picked on and have to answer her questions. If you communicate with her, class will be more easy. Do the homework, study, and do extra credit when offered!!!
She is passionate about Biology and it is shown in every lecture, every open lab. If you need the help, she will definitely give it to you--GO TO THE OPEN LABS. As for tests, this class was a piece of cake. Just study the study guide and pay attention to the review sessions before the test and you should do just fine.
Dr Nearn is an amazing instructor. As long as you read before class started you'll be okay. She is very helpful, and she expect no less than the students to pay attention. Do all homework, essay and extra credit, you'll pass the class. Thank you, Dr Nearn.
Mrs. Nearn gives several examples while lecturing. She does lecture a bit fast which is why you should always do the reading before class so you're not lost. She stops to answer any questions if there are any. The homework is not hard and it really helps to study them for the exam. She is really nice and understanding. I recommend her! :)
She is very hard teacher. Her tests are 9+ chapters each tests. Get ready to study hard since day one. Not kidding. Make sure to read the book and be ready to be a UC level student because she is going to teach you like a UC student. Good luck my young padawans. May the force be with you during the semester .
Dr. Nearn is an awesome professor. She cares about her students and goes the extra mile to help them understand the material. Go to class, soak in the lectures, do the study guides, pay attention to the reviews and you will succeed in her class. Oh and one more thing... Structure and Function people! Thanks for a fun class, Dr. Nearn.
Dont expect to get full credit from her. She tries to take away points on everything ( even extra credit) while other teachers try to give you partial credit. Beware of essay questions on the exams. Tough grader. Everything is hard in her class even lab works.
Best Teacher I ever take. knows her stuff well. make sure to do your job. study hard you will be rewarded. dont study F
Her tests are incredibly hard, but with the amount of points built into the semester don't even stress on it. I know nothing about biology, but I did all the homework, labs, and paper so I was able to pass with a B even though I got C's and D's on the tests.
Dr. Nearn is a fantastic professor!Bio11B is a killer class, hardest class I've taken so far including OChem, but if you really apply yourself and work very hard you can get an A. HIGHLY recommend study groups!Don't be afraid to talk to her, she really cares about her students. Very down to earth and fun. Super fast lectures!Highly recommend her!!
She is amazing!! she makes sure you understand the material for when you go to your next classes but she randomly picks on you if you're on your phone or falling asleep in her class. Her lectures are so fun and make you learn the material. She's a tough grader because her material is also test material, so it will pop up on tests.
Dr. Nearn is very smart but this class is by far the hardest class you will take. Tedious lab homework, mastering biology for lecture are due every week. She expects students to try very hard in her class because there is so much information. Do the homework and do not slack off. No study guides but tests are easy because of the preparation.
Dr. Nearn is one of the most caring and knowledgable professors I have ever taken. Physiology is normally a hard class so you do have to work for it, but she is always there to answer any questions & willing to go over things students don't understand until they understand it. She wants all her students to pass!
Dr. Nearn is a very good professor, she is super smart, knows what she is talking about without being a know-it-all, this class was difficult for me but the homework is easy, she is very lecture heavy but makes it fun.
She's a good teacher, but she gives out a lot of mundane tedious work. Her lab tests are the worst things to hit America since Justin Bieber and Drake came over from Canada. I enjoyed her class, but would not want to take it again.
This class is very hard. I've talked to friends at UC campuses taking the equivalent to this course and we learned things in this class that they never even covered. This class prepares you for a UC/CSU. Dr. Nearn will always be one of my favorite professors. She is committed to student success. Follow her advice and you can do well. Great teacher!
she wants everyone to get the grade they wanted to get and she gives lots of extra credit. The exams is surely hard so make sure you study!! Lab is interesting also
This was a HARD class! Dr. Nearn was a great teacher and I enjoyed her lectures. The tests are super hard though! The lecture tests have essay questions and the lab tests cover a TON of info, so make sure you STUDY really hard. She does offer extra credit, so take advantage of that. I worked really hard and ended up with a B+.
Professor Nearn is a well & respected professor. Although the class is difficult, Nearn will be there to help you. Do study guide, attend " Exam Reviews" for potential short answers exam, & Do your assignments. TIPS: Record Lecture & Take Pictures of Lab. Also Lab Exams are actually based on Lab material. If she "hints" then it is on the test.
She's very sweet and knowledgable. She's helpful when you need it but definitely does not take into consideration of other classes. seems like she wants you to study only for her class. She calls out on you if you're on your phone to make sure you're paying attention and lectures fast. so, be aware.
Study guides weren't useful for tests, however because she includes all the information you do and don't need to know for the exam. just read the textbook and follow along with the information on the study guide. Class average on exams were in the 60's. Don't take the class unless you make this class your top priority.
Show up to the lecture and lab. She wants all her students to pass but you have to work! She's very nice and she'll help you when needed. I'll take this class again for sure. If you want to learn, this is the class.
Very real college course. Get ahead on the pre-lectures if you can it'll make it a lot easier. Take the lab quizzes seriously. Free easy points that help a lot when you look back on it. Really forces you to work.
4 exams & final exam. Tests are very hard and the study guides are of absolute no use, don't bother studying them. instead study the 100 questions she gives you to do before the test. Some of those are on there. She was a very nice teacher however it was really hard to pass, even if you read the textbook. Everyone failed besides 8-9ppl from lab.
I took Dr. Nearn for Biology 11B and was able to earn an A. With this said, it was NOT easy to do so! Dr. Nearn is an amazing instructor! Her office hours are helpful and her lectures are fun. With this said, exams are tough and there is A LOT of work to be done outside of class. Reading the book/PowerPoints is necessary to do well, IMO anyways!
DON"T TAKE THIS CLASS, ESPECIALLY IN THE MORNING.
Tough grader
Do not recommend
I would recommend taking someone else. Shes not a good teacher. And is always tried in the morning and barley teaches anything.
Dont take this Professor!!!!
She goes off topic so often so it's kind of hard to understand stuff, the class is also pretty test, so if you're a bad test taker I wouldn't advise taking her. Plus since the lab teacher is a different, it just makes everything much more complicated than it need to be. I recommend taking the Saturday teacher, she has a 4.8 rating or Fresno city.
At first I thought this was going to be a easy class, but as time goes on you realize your grade is only made up of a few test. She's not the best teacher out there, I would recommend talking someone else if you want a A.
I dropped BIO5. The first day you jump right into lecture! If you didnt have the book already and read the first chapter you will be lost! She goes through it fast, so hope you write quick! Lab is hard if you dont also have her as your lab teacher! NO LATE WORK IS ACCEPTED! I DONT RECOMMEND taking this class on top of a lot of other classes!
if youre worried about taking bio5, pick a different teacher. she had free response questions on both lab and lecture exams. most difficult teacher. make sure you record lectures because she goes fast. although tough, it will prepare you for further bio classes
This class is where I found love for Physiology. It is difficult, record lecture & take good notes. If you get extra testing time through DSPS, USE IT! I had issues that almost required dropping out but her understanding and help outside of class is essentially the reason I passed. It is college level quality & difficulty - you work for your grade!
Do not take her class if you are looking for an easy A!! Take her class if you want to pass your nursing or medical school entrance exams! Her classes are difficult, but they prepare you in ways a college level course should. On the essay questions as long as you actually answer the question and explain what she wants you to know, you'll be fine.
Professor Nearn is very knowledgeable and knows her stuff, however, her teaching style is VERY fast pace and almost feels as if she expects us to know the material already. Her class is heavy on lecture and homework, the study guides are SUPER extensive and many things on there will not be on the test. Study the unit 100 questions instead.
Professor Nearn was an amazing professor. She is very tough, but that is because she wants to make sure that you learn and understand the material so you can go on to higher bio classes. She would use amazing metaphors to help us understand an idea. I would highly recommend her for your bio class if you plan on being premed.
Dr. Nearn is a PHENOMENAL teacher, she will always help if you are stuck on something, and she genuinely cares about her students success! But she will make sure that you are thoroughly prepared for nursing/medical school. This isnt an easy A class and you will get the grade that you WORK for. If you want an A in this class prepare to put in work
Not good teacher. Makes attendance mandatory and then proceeds to do the lecture and just read off the slides word for word. Study guides are zero help, just the homework helps for tests.
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER. Her lectures are horrible and gives SO MUCH hw. The most hw Ive ever had a teacher give and she grades each one extremely hard. Her test are set up horribly (For example: will give a question and each question will have 10 answers and you have to chose multiple) and her study guides have nothing to do with the test.
she is prob a better prof in person. I took her online during covid, still taking her class, but she's a pretty tough teacher. Her exams are very hard, and consist of a lot of "select all that apply" questions. I can tell she cares about her students though, she wants you to be good medical professionals, but sometimes it is too much.
If you are looking to take a normal physio class to count towards your degree, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. This class is not a normal physio class, Dr. Nearn will hold you to a very high standard. If you are going to take this class, take it with maybe 1 other class and that's it. She will test you on things that are not in your book so be prepared.
Her class is super difficult, and would not recommend if you are taking other classes or expecting an easy A. Her physio class is tough and is going to challenge you to every extent. If you are pursuing the medical field (which if you're taking this class you should be) then this is going to put you a head above the rest for your program!
This class was unnecessarily hard, and the amount of work expected of students is absolutely ridiculous. I appreciate her love of what she does, but she is absolutely unmoving with deadlines, expects a level of understanding of the material that I feel is unrealistic, and the workload is unmanageable as a working adult. Would never take again.
One of the worst professors at CCC. Tests are stupid difficult, her studyguides are barebone Q/A sessions. Her questions are "select all that apply", and lists 10 answers. You're penalized on incorrect answers. Out of 80 questions, 65+ are the "select all that apply". People saying "you'll be ahead of others at X program" are brown nosers. BAD PROF
Physiology is not an easy class no matter where you take it. You NEED to set time aside to actually learn & understand the material. If you do not put in the effort, do not expect an A. The workload is a lot, so plan ahead. If you truly understand the material, you will be fine on the exams. Professor Nearn is amazing at explaining the material.
Prof Nearn is a great professor and really cares about her class. However, this class was extremely difficult especially since it was all online. Her tests are super hard and you have multiple assignments every week so if you have to take this class, try not to take any others. It will take a lot of studying to pass. Test averages are always 60ish%
Class was hard and tests consisted of the homework questions mostly. I gave her a poor rating mainly because she is very pro-life and will lecture against abortions and being more responsible once you get to the reproductive unit. Disturbingly unprofessional.
If I got a dollar for every time Professor Nearn says, "come on you should know this already," I would be rich. She acts like you should know everything already. She gives out 11 Pearson Mastery Assignments a week, exams are free response, and labs are basically lecture, there are no hands on labs. Insanely hard grader. If you want an A, goodluck.
Professor Nearn is the absolute worst professor in the biology department at CCC. She grades hard, offers no extra credit, and she will fail you if you don't have a specific exam average. I earned a 72% in the class, but she input an F for my grade due to my exam average. Do yourself a favor, and drop the class if you've already selected her.
This class is hard. Like extremely hard. Dr. Nearn does not cut you any slack. Tests are crazy difficult. Even if you watch the lectures and know the textbook like the back of your hand, it's still not enough. You are expected to know the information on the first day. Study the unit lecture questions, lab study guides, and READ THE TEXTBOOK.
I don't why there's so many negative comments regarding Dr. Nearn. Dr. Nearn's is supposed to challenge you to prepare you for pro school. I was in her class and now in med school. All I can say, Dr. Nearn's class prepared me! If you think her class is hard, you might want to reconsider going into the medical field. It only gets tougher.
I am convinced any good reviews Nearn has here are written by her. I have always loved science, and have recieived an A from each class except for this one. This is due to Nearn's inability to give feedback, her hostility towards students, inability to respond to emails, and what seems to be a lack of passion for the subject.
it was so bad that I wanted to give her a 0 but thats not possible instead I give her a one. She is the worst. If you want to pass a class without having a mental health problems just don't take this class with her. She doesn't appreciate anything you do in this class. never expect a full grade.
She expects you to know everything despite not giving you enough time to fully take in the material you are learning. She will assign 60 page lab assignments and expect you to finish them in 1-2 days. The exam average for her class was under 50%. She will test you on things that aren't on the study guide or in the textbook.
Dr. Nearn is an awesome professor! She is professional, caring, and very knowledgeable about biology. She makes the class fun and interesting with activities such as case studies which help prepare for the medical field. This class will be difficult, so ask questions if you do not understand something. She is always happy to help! Would take again!
Dr. Nearn is interesting she will give you all the information you need, but you need to study it. She is transparent but the tests are horribly challenging. I learned so much, but the class is incredibly challenging. If you go to her study sessions and really commit to the class you will do well. She is polite and supportive but ask for help.
A lot of students complained about the busy work. While there is a lot of work, it isn't really busy. They are similar questions that you will be using on the exam.
I would not recommend anybody to take Dr. Nearn. She expects you to know every thing and every detail, and would always say "you should already know this" in every lecture. She's so knowledgeable about the class but would expect to be as smart as her. I regretted not dropping this course because I dreaded everyday that had to do with this class.
Each week we are given 13 assignments. We are given 4 days to complete all 13 assignments on top of watching her lectures. How can I have time to watch the 1 hour lecture, read the book & do the 13 assignments? The 13 assignments each week include: 16 page lab manual, 3 quizzes, a discussion board, & 8 MYLABs that have 36 questions each. GGs
Expects too much from her students. Tells the class we should already "know" the material before coming to class. Sheese, in that case, what do we need her for? Board work does not teach students anything, sorry not sorry. The lab is dreadful. Very unorganized and sloppy. Very harsh on grading. I regretted not dropping sooner.
Avoid at all costs.
This teacher ask for way too much. Lots of assignments and lab pages are overwhelm too. Avoid taking this class if you want to pass your Bio classes. She is a very tough grader and lots of assignments due every week. She acts like we all don't have a life outside of school. DO NOT TAKE HER!!
She's a nice person, but expects a lot. I agree with the "already know" posts. Lab manuals range anywhere from 12-16 pages and take AT LEAST 4 hours to complete along with a number of other assignments. Lab exams are OVERWHELMING, all short answer and must be super detailed. She became a little lax on grading when she realized the very low average
EXCELLENT lecturer, really knows how to make things "click". study the board work and you'll do just fine on the exams. my only gripe was the amount of busy work left VERY little time outside of class to memorize & comprehend the level of detail she expected of us. if she cuts down on the busy work i bet the class averages will vastly improve!
*deep inhale* Dr. Nearn is a very knowledgeable teacher but... she's WAY too fast. She expects you to know everything before you step a foot in her class. And the infamous "you should already know this" is just...ugh. This is hell for slow learners- I only had time to complete the hw and that's it. + a total of 8 exams + a final is just ridiculous.
dr nearn was a really good teacher and super helpful, i would go to office hours whenever you can, class is very difficult curriculum and a lot of homework. the homework is divided up and due monday, wednesday, friday nights. i spent about 15 hours every week doing this class. lab tests are free response, lecture tests are select all that apply
This was the most difficult class of my academic career. The test would give you insane anxiety with the 50 multiple choices for just one question! She wants you to know the material memorized word for word like she does. For a student who has to work full time, it feels impossible to pass her class. Labs are 10+ pgs long on top of tons of hmwk.
This class was VERY hard, but ultimately I learned a ton from this prof. Don't skip the reading and you should be ok. I worked full time, have a kid, family stuff, and a learning disability, and let me tell you- an A is possible if you really work for it. Reach out for help when you don't understand, and study the unit hw extra before exams!
Had Nearn for my lab section & I really enjoyed her class! She's very helpful and knowledgeable! Physio is historically a difficult subject, so do your best to keep up with the lectures & dont procrastinate. Put aside time & effort to study & memorize the questions on the lab manual & board work cause they mostly show up on the lab exams.
Do yourself a favor and take physiology elsewhere. Physiology's definitely a hard course, but with Nearn it felt impossible. The lab exams are insane, all free response. If you do take Nearn, don't bother taking any other STEM courses alongside unless you want to ruin your GPA. Getting an A in physiology is possible, but with Nearn it's rare.
Dr. Nearn is one of the most knowledgable and passionate professors I have ever had. Read and understand each chapter, do ALL of the homework assignments, spend time doing the lab manuals and go to office hours/tutoring. She really does care about her students and wants you to succeed, you just have to put in the extra time and effort.
Her quiz/exams are ridiculously long and does NOT relate to the lectures. you would think you'll be learning something but once the quiz/exam comes, it's a total curve ball. would NOT recommend this teacher. If I could, I wouldn't even give her a 1 star.
the workload in this class is insane. i'm convinced she only wants us to do work for her class. She makes physio overwhelmingly difficult to "prepare" us for the medical field. She forgets this is a pre-req course. So much to do in such a short amount of time. Save yourself time and avoid her class!!
Her lab exams are 15 pages long, all free response and you must be super detailed. Lecture exams are about 8 pages long, 3-4 pages of free response, rest is multiple choice select all that apply. Her lectures are boring and she goes so fast. AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS
Too many assignments to be done in a non realistic time especially for people who work full time of have families. Expects for you to know everything already.
Avoid this teacher unless you want lots of work to do (and not have time to study due to having other classes to work on!!!) in a short amount of time then fail your exams.
I enjoyed Nearn's class a lot, she's extremely knowledgeable & will go above & beyond to help you if you ask for it. READ the book, GO to office hours, do boardwork to solidify concepts. Tests are hefty so prepare well. This class is challenging, but it's tailored towards healthcare careers, so nothing that you won't use. She's tough but fair!
I put all of my effort into this class and I am still failing. Tough grader, 8+ assignments a day with a lab. Just avoid this teacher if you need to pass. Extra credit given is maybe 4 points total.
Get ready to learn nothing and be expected to pass exams. Torture the amount of assignments and tests. Wasted my summer trying to get this coursework done. If you have a job or life outside of school this professor is not for you. Unhelpful.
Took a 4 week course and put all of my time into this course just to come out with a D. I thought I had everything memorized and prepared for each exam but they are total curveballs. Tough grader with unrealistic due dates for the amount of work when also working a full time job. If due dates were longer maybe would have had a better grade. AVOID!!
Took this course over the summer and I felt like I was rushing to do more work since there was so much than being able to actually study for the exams. If you don't pass the exams you don't pass the class. Expect to get minimal sleep if this is how all the courses are. VERY tough grader with no feedback other than "study this more"
I might do a 3 part series just based on how awful she was. For one NO Empathy for students who have to work or have family to take care of. IF YOU HAVE ANY OTHER CLASS OUTSIDE OF HERS, then good luck. The amount of HW is insane and you have to dedicate all your time to her course. If you have a free schedule (no work or family) then this class 4 u
Lab Exams are 15 PAGES LONG ALL WRITTEN. Lecture exams are SELECT ALL THAT APPLIES AND EVEN WRITTEN. She has over 300 slides for her lectures and on top of that she is a tough grader. You would spend hours on her lab packets alone. PLEASE AVOID HER. She is not worth taking if you have a full schedule. You would need to spend 4-5 days for her class.
She does not like it if you miss a single lab period. Even if you follow her policy and tell her ahead of time the reasoning she would still be mad at you. If you skip a lab you fail. On the first exam almost everyone got a D or C. She is not worth RISKING YOUR GRADE AND MENTAL HEALTH. Please only choose her class if you have free time. And no job.
She likes to throw the phrase "you should know this" in your face. It's incredibly tone-deaf. I can't even remember what I ate yesterday and here she is expecting us to know every single little thing from previous classes. Some of us are slow learners, some of us need a refresher. throwing those phrases in our face does nothing. Not helpful at all.
So in summary, she is not helpful in the slightest, test heavy, no empathy for students and their work or family life. Has unrealistic expectations and is a tough grader on top of that. don't be full by the positive reviews, you truly need to have a lot of free time, no family or job to balance her class. PLEASE DONT CHOOSE HER CLASS.
This man has never been inside a classroom once in his life.
This class is nearly impossible to pass! Each week, we have two mastering assignments, 2-3 readings, and a dynamics study module that includes 3 to 4 links with 30-40 questions per quiz. There's also a lab quiz with 20 problems, a 20-page lab worksheet packet, and 2-3 extra credit opportunities through Labster, which only adds up to 0.9 points.
All lab exams are written and worth 150 points. Her lecture exams consist of multiple-choice questions—many of which are "select all that apply" (which is all or nothing)—along with 2-3 written problems, also worth 150 points each. Overall, exams account for 60 to 75 percent of your grade. No study guides are given. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!!!
This teacher makes you DRAW DIAGRAMS ON HER EXAM NOT TOMENTION HER EXAMS ARE 15 PAGES LONG ALL WRITTEN. NO STUDY GUIDE OR EMPATHY IF YOU HAVE OTHER CLASSSES. SHE PURPOSELY GOES OUT HER WAY TO MAKE HER CLASS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT WITH NO REGARDS FOR STUDENTS WHO HAVE A FULL CLASS SCHEDULE AND WORK TO SUPPORT OR PROVIDE FOR THEIR FAMILY. AVOID PLZ!
Yes, she's tough. Her tests are long and worth a lot, and there's a lot of homework. BUT if you do the homework and thoroughly research the assignments, it will help you on her exams. You could take another teacher for an easy A, but in this class, you'll truly learn the material, which will benefit you on the TEAS and in nursing school!
All the good reviews Do not mention anything about having a FULL SCHEDULE or Job. This class is incredibly hard to balance if you don't have free time. Not to mention the teacher lacks any empathy for students who have a working life or family to take care of. Assignments are long and tedious. Trust the bad reviews.
Her lecture exams are around 75 questions select all that apply. Her lab exams are 15 pages long, all written (your hand will cramp trust). She asks you to diagram and describe IN DETAIL. Her lecture slides on minimum are around 100+ but don't be surprised if it reaches 200. Do yourself a service and don't take her if you have an choice.
Just Don't Do It. Do yourself a favor and don't take her. I think her course needs to be reevaluated by the school board. Because this is just insane.
Not a good teacher. Do yourself a service and don't take this class. You have been warned. If you do take her class, I recommend YouTube videos on her lecture materials. Skip her lecture and book altogether. You'll waste a lot of time on materials that won't make sense. YouTube videos are your best friends.
IT IS VERY HARD TO BALANCE WORK LIFE or ANY FULL SCHEDULE. With this teacher. Please reconsider. And if she is your only choice then I recommend skipping her lecture altogether and just read the book. It's a long round about 300 plus slides on the book chapters anyways. Good luck
Get ready to be punish with lots of hw and a 15 page all written lab exam. Lecture exam are 75 questions select all apply. Need to have a lot of time for this class. She lack empathy. Totally reccomend to avoid this teacher.
Some people are just not mentally to be teachers. Teacher should take their time to mentor you. Not throw it back in your face and say “you should already know this.” A teacher should want to help you not want to tear you down. Out of all the teachers I've met, this teacher truly doesn't care or have any empathy for students.
If you are going into the nursing field where your grades determine if you get into the program or not. This class is NOT for you. It's better to get a class with a teacher that cares and actually likes their job. You'll regret being in this class by the second week. Please choose wisely and please note this class requires A LOT OF FREE TIME!
Just don't do it. Your mental health will really decline. The teacher doesn't care. Please if you have a choice don't choose her class!
She is one of the laziest teachers to be known. She skips through her lecture of 100-200 slides briefly reading or wasting materials that we don't need to know such as medications. Lab consist of students teach ourselves that is researched online for answers. It is unacceptable that she is allowed to teach due to her average being a F.
This teacher teaching license should be revoked. She blames her students that they are the ones failing when she is the one who doesn't teach anything. Her lecture slides are a waste of time. You literally will get better information on youtube. She is also a horrible person. Gets mad easily and doesn't care if you have a job or full schedule.
She is very inconsiderate to her students. Claims that she cares but she truly doesn't. Don't be fooled. You are better off with any other physio teacher than her! Her Hw workload is insane, 15-20 pages long WRITTEN AND DIAGRAM (DETAILED) lab exams and 85 select all that applies, match the terms, types and multiple choice lectured exams.
Out of all the classes I've taken at CCC I have never felt so helpless and so frustrated with such an instructor and her course. When asking for help, she throws the word "you should've already known this" in my face. I feel very ignored and hurt by this instructor. Trust me it is better to avoid this teacher AT ALL COST!
You need to have a lot of free time for her class. This teacher does everything to make your life difficult. I truly believe only people with free time and no family gave her, her high ratings. Please do not take her class and if she is your only option please just wait until the next semester and if you can't please choose any Prof. at Fresno city
All the comments below me were right. Please listen to them. Literally, your mental health truly declines. ALL her exams and hw are HEAVY materials. I regret taking this class so much but I had no other option left. I hope any one on the school board can revoke her teaching license
Sitting in class, regretting my decision. Please don't do it. I would go into details but the other reviews already proved my point.
WORD OF ADVICE: for those of you who unfortunately had to choose her class for labs exam, YouTube videos ARE YOUR BEST FRIENDS. For lectures exam, unfortunately it's the textbook. Whatever is on the lab exam only 20% of it will be on the lecture. Whatever is on your lab topic that was on the lab exam, the remainder that wasn't will be on lec. Exam
She goes incredibly fast, mind you this teacher expects you to know everything already. So keeping up with her is challenging since this is something she had time to repeatedly teach and learn. I agree that YouTube videos help a lot more than her lecture and labs. But aside from that she really needs to learn how to be a good teacher.
Dr. Nearn is an exceptional instructor for both physiology lab and lecture. Her expertise in the subject is evident, and she truly cares about her students' understanding of the material. Attendance is mandatory, which I appreciate, as her lectures are packed with valuable information that you won't want to miss.
One of the standout aspects of her teaching is the emphasis on detail in short-answer questions. This requirement may seem daunting at first, but it pushes you to grasp the intricacies of physiological processes, which is crucial for mastering the subject. Dr. Nearn is always willing to meet with students for additional help.
In her lectures and labs, Dr. Nearn consistently highlights key areas that will appear on exams, providing clear guidance on what to focus your studies on. I found that studying a little bit each day, as she suggests, greatly improved my retention of the material.
This teacher grades with an iron fist, and has no remorse for human error. I attended every class, and completed every assignment (including extra credit) and still could not come close to passing the course . the tests are insane and are graded as all or nothing in terms of credit.
if you see there's more bad reviews than good reviews, avoid this professor i cannot stress that enough. For those saying dr. nearn prepares you for the medical field, i promise you there are professors out there who are just as informative with minimal course work. a reminder you don't need free response exams, endless of hw to be successful.
She's currently in hot waters with the school board due to the amount of students reporting her exams and work load. If that doesnt summarize her as a professor then you are free to believe the fake positive reviews
There are way better teachers out there that actually cares about you and want you to succeed. I would go into details about how she made my life this semester hell but i think all the negative comments accurately depict and describe it. Note that the positive comments don't mention anything about work life or full schedule. Suspicious.
I came here to write a review after finding out that a lot of students are reporting her to the school board My experience with her is that she has no empathy for students Expects you to already know everything She claim that she tough on you to prepare you for nursing LIES there are other classes that can do just that and still treat you decently
PLEASE, if you are choosing classes rn AVOID HER AT ALL COST. im passing with a decent grade but this teacher will make your semester miserable. Choose anyone but her. Bad reviews are as accurate they can get. But if you have no other choice, whatever job or familial commitment you may have, know that this teacher makes it impossible to balance.
Dont waste your time with this class. This class has super over bearing work load, lectures and exam. On top of that the teachers doesn't really care about any problems you have outside her class. Even if you follow her rules and explain to her why you are missing her class, she gets angry at you. She is not reasonable and believes she's right.
I tried taking her class one semester and it was the worst experience I have had with any professor. Ending up dropping her class and the next semester took the same class at Fresno City passing with a B. Avoid her at all cost!
As a full time working LVN I need this class as one of my final prerequisites&I can say the NCLEX was nowhere near as difficult as Nearns exams. She says she doesn't try to confuse you on exams but SHE DOES. Exams are select all that apply & you either answer correct or it's wrong entirely no partial credit. I do not recommend her she doesn't care
AVOID! Nine, 24-page exams, no sympathy, rude, 40-60 hours of work weekly, indifferent to students, will blame you, etc. Worst experience. Waste of time/money. Only 2-4% will pass. Should be canned and college investigated. Exams harder than State Licensing. Beyond the scope of junior college. AVOID FOR YOUR MENTAL HEALTH. Listen to bad reviews!
You never get your tests back. Then she says make an appointment to see her in office, but she's only there 2.5 hours a week. No transparency to her students.
Just dropping by to say all the good reviews are written by Robyn Nearn, prove me wrong. Not a single person enjoyed her class. Drug testing teachers should be a thing.
If only 2% pass the class semester after semester, maybe it's the teacher. Still seeing nothing has changed. The teacher shortage is real. Ms Nearn gives all teachers a bad rep.
Hostile, toxic teacher who treats students like adversaries she has to defeat. Does not promote discussion and questions. Will not work with you if you're busy with work or family. Compassion is lacking. Discourages students from succeeding in college. Avoid this entire school's bio department.
This was the hardest class I have ever taken before. I was constantly stressed out, I lost 10 pounds, I lost hair, all because I was trying to balance her class along with my full schedule and family life. Her class will mess with you mentally, go anywhere else and enjoy what you are learning. Physiology shouldn't be taught in this fashion.
Just dont do it. Every single bad review is telling you the truth. The positive ones are setting you up for failure. Im barely passing and not a day goes by where i dont want to just drop everything. I cried so much because of this class. I feel so looked down upon and stupid. I hope no one has to go through this.
I came back to write a review so that I can warn every student that wants to take this course. Its not worth being mentally exhausted and being ignored when asking for help by this professor. Avoid this physio class at all cost. Fresno city will be way better. I promise
When you communicate with this teacher about conflicts with personal life outside of class she will basically say she doesn't care. Also feel like the expectation to have this class be the only thing going on in one's life is nonsense. People in college have jobs and families and there was no compromise or facilitation for student success.
The bad reviews speak for themselves. LoL, if you scroll she has 40+ bad reviews from this single fall semester (2024) alone. Trust the bad reviews. They are all truthful.
A teacher that sets you up for failure, ruins your mental healthy, and bad at her job. License should be revoked. Never met someone who hate their students so much.
What you need to know: A LOT OF HW. “Hw are your study guide”. Skip her lecture and just read the book. Youtube videos teaches you better than her. Do all of that youll prolly pass with a C. Say goodbye to mental health and family/ work life.
Docks a lot of points on exam if its nit exactly detailed like she wanted it. Docks hw and quizzes. She needs to take a chill pill. Or better stop taking whatever drugs that's shes on
Better skip this entire class and school in general. Fresno city have better teachers and counselors that care if a teacher is treating you like nothing. Hope she's will stop giving herself good reviews. Because lets be honest all the good reviews are either hers or theyre paid by her. Cause aint no way any students actually likes her.
I have 4 weeks left with her and I am feeling severally burnt out and tired. I am trying to hang on but I hate it so much. I hate the insanely longs labs, the long lectures, the many hours I worked hard to put in and study for her class just to completely bomb the exams. I hate it so much. I want to quit.
Professor Nearn if you are reading this, just know that you alone made my experience at clovis community a living hell. You claim to help us but you are doing more harm than good. You don't try to help even when we communicate and blame us for our lack of knowledge. You are a professor, you need to do your part and listen to your student. Be better
Listen should be revoked. Class should be heavily reexamined by the school boards. Horrible Horrible teacher. No empathy, tedious HW. Insane lectures, quizzes and exams. Avoid at all cost!
Unprofessional and incompetent. Not going to miss the blank 80-page "inconclusive" study guides and getting F's on exams.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. SHE IS SO SPECIFIC ON WHAT SHE WANTS ON THE TEST. IF YOU THINK U ADDED ENOUGH DETAIL, UR WRONG SHE WANTS MORE.
Bad reviews speaks for themselves. Dont trust the good ones. I think theyre written by the teacher
RUN! JUST RUN! Its too late for me…
Class from hell. Teacher should have stuck to animals not people. Although, those poor animals. This course was a joke and a bad one.
It's perfectly reasonable to have 100+ assignments taking 1-15hours each and 2,300 points in an 18-wk course. Totally normal and humanly possible... if you're Hermoine Granger and have a time-changing device. That's science fiction and so is the concept of passing her course.
Horrible. Dont waste your time. Just keep scrolling and read the reviews.
Even on thanksgiving she's torturing me with so much hw. I hate it so much. Im just glad i only have three weeks left with her. Im so done with this professor. Her teaching methods should be questioned if its ethical or not.
So much to say, too burnt out to.
I wish I could leave zero stars. Worst experience of my life. It would be easier for a quadriplegic to scale Mt. Everest than pass her course. Serious question—is she insane? Not qualified to run the hot dog stand much less a college course.
This teacher gave me serious stress. I hate it too much. Did it have to be this difficult? Every time exams come by i start crying from pure stress. My mental health is the worst it has been in years. I pity anyone who has chosen her class for next year.
Would NEVER EVER recommend someone to suffer this class. The comments really speak for themselves. This teacher expects you to know 1000+ slides in 4 weeks to prep for an exam. Yay you are given a study guide... 16 pages worth of broad information. Teacher says a lot "you should already know this" her infamous saying. THIS TEACHER IS UNREAL.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS! She asks for SOOO much, WAY to technical! She made my life a living HELL. Never again.
This course is generally tough, but it will be even tougher with this professor. If you plan on achieving a Master's or Doctorate Degree, by all means, this is a good start to understanding the workload and the "standards". Tremendous amount of homework, grade on each assignment matters, and EACH detail matters to satisfy her "standards". Good luck
Boy, am I GLAD that this nightmare is over.. I'd consider myself a person who's fairly smart. A & B student. The fact that I felt so dumb in the class is beyond me. NOTHING was ever enough. I tried so hard not to fail. I have never said to myself, "I just wanna pass." She made me doubt myself so much and if I was competent enough. just dont!!!!!!!
Replace Pitch with my letter grade and thats basically describes this teacher. I pitty the poor soul that takes her class.
I saw someone do this so, replace punt with my letter grade and behold that is who your teacher is for this entire semester. Someone who belittle you and make you feel small. Dont teach you anything.
bad. rude. avoid. you've been warned in simplest terms
Yeah, my grade is good but the amount of crying sessions and sleepless nights were not. I truly hope i never see her again. How can u be a bad professor and a horrible person at the same time?
better professors out there. Save your braincells for another class
No………………..
DO NOT TAKE!!! Especially if you have a job and taking other classes. I had a passing grade but she failed me because I did not have the average test scores!! This was my last class to apply for nursing school now I have to wait another year! Take another professor OVER her even if it's out of the COUNTRY!!!!!!!
As someone who had Nearn years ago and is about to graduate with an RN degree, this professor is awful. Awful. Unfortunately she is tenured so CC can't do anything about her. Instead of taking her class go to Fresno City or Reedley. I'm serious. Your GPA is so important for nursing and NONE of the stuff in her class matters for nursing
HORRIBLE! Don't do it
I took this class thinking it would be smooth. Definitely was not. Very tough on grading. The workload is absolutely ridiculous. There are way too many assignments that need to be done by certain days! Definitely would not recommend this class to anyone at all!
good luck been warned.
Noooo….. Would not take again
There is something wrong with this woman.
A woman with a DVM should not be teaching human physiology. I am about to graduate nursing school but I come back to say that this woman is not a good professor and when I took her she still ranks as one of the worst I've ever had.
"You should know this already!" shouted the failed veterinarian.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! HORRIBLE! I am warning you take it somewhere else either at Reedley, Fresno City, Madera Community, COS, Lemoore College or even out of state. I know she is tenured but that should not be the only reason why she still has a job teaching.
online exams you will not have A-D to select from. more like A-J and it is a SELECT ALL THAT APPLY question. Written essay responses for lab exams. she berates the class often. the homework alone will take you hours to complete daily. There is a difference between wanting to educate students and see them fail. only take this class as last resort.
This is the hardest class I've ever taken. As an honors student who's done multiple APs, I've never struggled this much. The instructor was passive and expected us to live and breathe her course, offering little grace for any situation. I wouldn't recommend this class—please try anywhere else, even waitlist if you must.
Don't take HER! WARNING I've never disliked a professor in my life no matter how hard a class was. She gives a lot of homework, quiz, exams r hard, extra credits (0.01 point each), a lots of reading. All I ever heard in class was “you should know this already” what is a teacher who doesn't teach? Never meet a professor who wanted students to fail.
Worst semester of my life. Made life hell, and miserable
I CANT BELIEVE SHE IS TENURED. LITERALLY LICENSE SHOULD BE REVOKED! HOW IS SHE QUALIFY TO TEACH WHEN SHE WENT TO SCHOOL TO BE A VET.
short/sharp giving details/high expectations/asked questions makes belittling comments talks louder/asked again yelling no answer given/office hours no clarity or help to learn subject/continuously told not working hard enough.Have to know her verbiage.Tests graded very hard/multiple draw diagrams w specific descriptions/20+ select all that apply
It's like your sleep paralysis demon suddenly waking up and deciding that torturing you when you are subconscious isn't enough, so it decides to manifest itself in the form of Robyn Nearn.
DROP THIS CLASS. IF YOU SEE THIS. DROP HER. ITS. NOT. WORTH. IT.
Notice how she has the worst reviews of all time? That speaks for itself. Too traumatized to say more.
the HARDEST class I have ever taken. I have never ever done this bad in a class before and I took the hardest AP class at my high school. the class is so test heavy. if you do not get a 60% average on all exams you will automatically fail the class. explains everything so fast it is hard to take notes on everything that is needed for tests/hw.
I had to submit a petition to retake this class, when asked for the reason I did not pass the course I simply pasted the link to Nearns reviews from here. Obviously the school knows how horrible she is but sadly nothing they can do. If you see this teacher AVOID at ALL costs, not sure why she even teaches with how poorly she talks to her students.
to much homework I was told not to take the course I decided to drop the class it was not work the stress i felt in the first 3 days I didn't have time to do anything else at all. based on the reviews i decided i would not move forward.
This class is so bad, literally avoid at all cost. The lecture exams are all select all that apply, multiple choice with options A-G, and at the beginning of the exam it states that every question either has one or two correct answers, and she gives no partial credit at all. Literally impossible, just go take the class at Fresno City or something.
Do you care about sleep and your mental health? Do you enjoy at least having 2 free days. If you asnwred yes to any of these questions. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. By far THE worst professor I have ever taken. She does not care for her students. She rambles on too much and her lectures and her teaching methods are confusing
It was horrible. I dont know how I survived
This class was extremely uncomfortable and very disorganized. The professor often brought personal beliefs into the classroom in ways that felt inappropriate and unprofessional. This teacher definitely has a few loose screws. Even other biology instructors have hinted that she may be close to retirement, and honestly, it shows.
No. Don't think about taking her class. You will earnestly believe you can outsmart her or just be a good student, but you can't. Nothing pleases her. Just save your mental health for a professor who actually cares. Tests are 15 pages of diagrams/multiple choice/fill in answers where she expects a specific answer. She simply does not care.
