Decent enough, I guess. However, she seems to ignore the greats, ie: Yeats, Elliot, ect ect ect. According to her, all poems are about sex. Also, STAY ON HER GOOD SIDE. Don't cross her, or you might as well drop the class. She won't think twice about reaming you out infront of the whole class, even over something small.

Very disrespectful and rude.
Nice enough teacher but she is very paticular about what she considers "quality" and what she doesn't like. Vague when giving topics for papers and then quick to blast students when the paper doesn't match her personal feelings.
she is not the nicest person in the world..if you get her as a teacher i highly recommend switching out of it as fast as you can....
I took this class with Robyn my first semester and I thought she was a really good prof, very helpful, and cares about her students. The people who didn't like her obviously either didn't show up to class or do any work because if you attended most classes and had something intelligent to say, you got an A. She expects a lot but is fair.

If you fit into her box you'll do great, dare to be more then a lemming and watch out. Obscure when giving out assignments and penalizes students for not being a mind reader.
I was an English major before encountering this teacher. She is the most ridiculous marker ever. Worst marks I have ever gotten in English and I have never gotten below A's. She basically gives bad marks if she doesn't agree with your thesis or how you support it.

One of the worst teachers I've ever had. While I didn't end up getting a bad mark in her class, I found her to be extremely rude, disrespectful and a very hard marker (first essay I ever got a C on). She picks favourites and is completely scary. Avoid her like the plague.
Degrades you, shuts down your ideas if they aren't exactly like hers, irresponsible, late.
fun to talk to when in disscussion. She'll respect you if you can support your opinion. She believes you can PROVE an opinion, and thats kind of wierd. Maybe I haven't taken enough english classes. If you are going to half-ass it, then she'll mock you for it, so be prepared.
She in an all-around difficult person. I've dealt with her in the classroom and in other settings (not school related), and she is always rude and likes to make personal attacks on you and single you out if your point of view differs from hers. If you're signed up for one of her classes, I highly suggest you RUN!
Robyn is basically the only good prof at MRC. A lot of people don't like her because they are too used to Mount Royals high school attitude towards teaching. If you need to shut up she'll make sure you do, which is nice for a lot of other people in the class! if you are respectful, she will respect you. There's a lot to gain from taking her class

Probably one of the worst teachers I've encountered at MRC. Teaches MLA format incorrectly and incoherently. Expects you to share her opinion or else it's wrong. Treats the whole class like children, very insulting to the 2nd+ years in the class. Also dresses inappropriately, it is distracting and unprofessional.
Rude and condescending. Doesn't help when it is asked. Doesn't actually listen to students' responses, interrupts with her own. Often late for class. Quite a lot of work but not too much. No bra...Good mark is possible, just agree with her opinion. Hard to recommend.
Starkey is one of the worst profs I have ever had. She destroyed this once-loved material for me and she is...a little...off, to say the least.
I loved english but she ruined it for me. A very peculiar person and treats students like kinder gardeners. She will make sure that you get the lowest grade possible unless you are one of her favorites. She belongs in a psychiatrist ward. Need I say more?

Robyn wasn't actually as bad as all the previous comments stated. If you take her class just read the texts cause the final exam is based on them, and go to class. She is also very by the book, and goes by every rule. Make sure you follow guidelines and you will be fine.

She is the worst teacher ever. No exaggeration. It's either her way or the high way. No such thing as academic freedom exists in her class. Please drop out or your GPA will be down the drain. Not only she picks favorites but also makes sure that people she doesn't like are graded as low as possible. how is she still teaching?

Not great, not terrible. She plays favorites but if you participate in the discussions it's not hard to become one. She lets you hand in assignments a day late with no penalty. She can be sarcastic but is approachable. She uses Mahara not BB which is a huge pain in the ass. Take time to to talk to her outside of class - your grade will thank you.
Worst teacher ever. Picks on ppl who don't have the same opinion as her. Dont miss class or u will be picked on. Calls u out infront of others, online b/c she is afraid of face-face confrontation. If u ask a question she dances around the answer confusing u & then accuses u of not doing the work b/c u ask more questions. Very hard 2 get along with!
Worst professor I have ever had in my history at Mt. Royal. Her opinion is the only one that matters in her class. If you do not agree with her opinion then she will outright attack what you say in class. If you decide to take a class with her don't voice any ideas that aren't in line with hers or your grade will suffer. Horrible person!

Robyn Starkey is an immature woman. Far less mature than I considering, though we hate eachother and I despise her opinions, I am the one who attempts to be civil in our unfortunate run-ins. Mostly, she avoids eye contact but in our last encounter she confiscated my own personal art I tried giving to a good proffessor calling it "inapropriate". F
Everyone is saying nasty things about Robyn but I really liked her! I've taken a few classes with her and I thought she was very nice, helpful and fun! She expects you to not be an idiot...so I'll say that, but if you pay attention, and do the work and act your own age, you'll do well. She is fun and very approachable!

In my opinion Robyn Starkey was a terrible professor, the worst I have ever had. She is quite often late for class and is a hard marker. She is VERY critical and quite unpleasant. Do NOT take any class with her.

I actually liked her. I thought she was a good teacher, if you are willing to put the effort in she will help you! She can be very some may say condescending at times, but if you are willing to participate and do your homework she is easy to get along with!
Worst professor I have ever had. I had Robyn for my very first university class and she made it a living nightmare for me. She will only mark documents handed in via GMail. She gave multiple students 0 for not handing it in correctly. (They used word instead of gmail) She will completely shut students down when they try to answer a question. Awful.
A challenging teacher who appreciates attentive students. Do not expect to be a dunderhead and get away with it.
I loved Robyn! She is a tough cookies, but she knows her stuff and will help you out. She doesn't like when students are late or miss classes. She is one of my favourites. If she taught higher level classes I would definitely take another one with her.
Way too much homework for a children's literature course. Only a minimum amount of instruction and expectation as she keeps you guessing with each essay as to what she wants. She simply provokes discussion among students so she can sit back and relax. In addition, she is quite rude and snobby, and insults students in front of the class

Prof. Starkey was not a babysitter. She was a great teacher, and her course was made much more than it could have been by a lazy prof. She challenged the students and wouldn't settle for the minimum. Her grading is tough. She does not accommodate the lazy or dumb. I would take a 3rd/4th year course from her.
She is a good prof in my eyes, bit of a hard marker, and you need good writing skills to get a good mark in her class. But overall if your interested in blogging, and social media i would recommend this class!
Do not like her class. It takes lot of effort to show up to her class. Very hard marker. Instructions are vague and when asked to explain in detail she goes to different tangent. Avoid if possible.

She is such a hard marker and I have more homework in this class then any. And if you don't blog over 1000 words twice a week you get a 2/6. Dreadful class so far. Her instructions are not clear AT all. Said at the beginning need to check google+ every couple of days, which is a lie. You need to be on that 24.7 to get a good grade.
Robyn is great! Class can be a bit dry but the topics are different and interesting.As long as you do your homework and contribute to class discussion, you'll be fine. Text book isn't really necessary as you only use it for MLA citation. It's not the end of the world if you miss a class. Just keep up with blog posts and essays and you'll get an A.
Robyn is condescending, rude and overall unclear on her expectations. She will mark you poorly for tiny mistakes, even if these mistakes were because of her own terrible instructions. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS.
Very tough grader. Wow. She is helpful, obviously this is university and she isn't going to chase you to go see her, but if you do see her she does help. From first hand experience she can be very rude when you try and speak your opinion on an idea.
Robyn Starkey marks with a biased opinion. She is condescending in class, shuts down any opinion that doesn't relate to her own, and is very discouraging. It is hard to participate in a class where you feel like your opinion in invalid. She makes it hard to wake up excited to learn.
Probably one of the most condescending people I have ever come across in my life. If questions are not answered the way she feels, she will stop at no lengths to make you feel stupid and wrong. Is very obvious about favourite students I feel sorry if you aren't one of those select few. If you wanna feel stupid and undermined join this class.
I did not like her class at all. in my opinion run away screaming from it! Her class is boring, she will sit in a chair for 3 hours straight without moving and just talking, tough marker and she does not mark the quality of your writing but your opinions about a subject matter. Be ware if what you think does not match with what she does.
Robyn has a very quirky personality, meaning she likes things done in a specific way. She is very clear with instructions, only uses Google Docs rather than Blackboard and won't give instruction to students who weren't in class. To do well, go to class, take notes on specific terms she wants you to use in your writing and you'll do fine!
Her assignments are unclear, she will provide you with a paragraph (if that) long of criteria on marking a 9 page paper. Always, Always, e-mail her for clarification on the assignment. Don't just think that because you read the rubric you have any idea what she wants, because you wont. She will get your marks back to you 1-4 weeks late.

She doesn't like it if you're late or skip class, which is ironic because she was late on a somewhat frequent basis. I (as well as about half of the class) ended up dropping the class because it was so bad. Do not take any class with her!!
She was lovely, and extremely interested in the topics. There are fun assignments, like writing a children's book. The research paper is weighted awkwardly, but was really interesting! I would recommend her children's literature course if you find it interesting, and are not looking for an easy A+.
If you tend to skip class or do the bare minimum, Robyn is not the instructor for you! I found she was clear in what she wanted, and what she wanted was students to do all of their readings and assignments when they were expected to. If you clearly don't do the readings, you will be asked to leave. She is helpful if you do what you're expected to.
She's horrible. She dances around questions you ask regarding assignments and never actually answers it. She isn't clear about what she wants from assignments, and gives one small horrible paragraph that hardly explains anything. She's rude and condescending when you ask questions and comment on things.
Great prof. She teaches you a lot about grammar and writing etiquette that university students lose after writing so many scholarly papers. She is straight to the point, has a very dry sense of humor, read between the lines at her comments, ask questions and do EXACTLY as she says and you'll do VERY well. She is very abrasive and slightly rude. She explains that all opinions are valid, but if it doesn't match up with hers, it really isn't. She is not clear in what her expectations are for assignments and is not a prof that I would recommend for anyone.

Very scattered lectures, unclear with assignments, and makes "jokes" about non-existent due-dates. Arbitrary grading, appallingly insensitive and difficult to follow discussion, and just very stressful to be around. Unless you have no choice, get into another class. It's just not worth the stress, especially if you have a full term.
I honestly do not understand why she has such a low rating, I absolutely LOVED Robyn and her class, she is funny and blunt so maybe if you're overly sensitive avoid her class. She grades fairly and easily and gives bonus marks for showing up. Flexible due dates and replies to emails very quickly. Very generous with rewrites. One of my favourites
She is a great prof! Honestly, she gives clear examples and help if you just ask in class or send her an email. She also has a policy called "Devils Bargain" where you can hand in assignments 48 hours later that the due date which has no late deductions but you can see her comments on your paper. She is great, I would recommend her!
At first I was a little put off but a couple weeks in I really started to enjoy the class. If you show up prepared and ready to participate in group discussions you will do great. Encourages discussion between students opposed to only listening to her lecture. On assignments she gave a specific and detailed account of what you did right and wrong.
If your opinion on something did not match hers she would humiliate you in front of the whole class, and then it would be reflected in your grades. Very biased marker and inconsistent.
Avoid at all costs! Robyn seems to enjoy making fun of some students. She does not explain assignments well and then gets mad when you ask for clarification.

My class was the first GNED 1401 Robyn had ever taught at MRU. She does not explain expectations on assignments, her feedback is kept to a minimum and if she does not agree with your opinion, she will make it known. This class ended up being a waste of time and a lot of unnecessary frustration.
If you are thinking of taking a course with Robyn don't! I took writing about images and it was a lot of work for a GNED. She is RUDE, Robyn encourages discussion but I can't remember the amount of times she yelled at student for stating options. It would be hard to do well in this class if you aren't a strong writer already.
I am a fourth-year student, and I got to say that I have never had a such a horrible experience in a class! 4 papers! two 750 words papers, two research papers 1500, and 2500 words with peer-reviewed citations and 114 sources btw them. one poster, one presentation, 10 smaller assignments, all in a 1st year gned spring class! She is rude too!
Unlike many people in my class, I actually got a rather good grade in this class, but nevertheless I fully sympathize with people who didn't. Starkey is nitpicky and can be somewhat inconsiderate of others and has lots of impatience. I would only recommend taking her if she was the absolute last available option.

honestly the rudest teacher I have ever met. Even with emails and multiple times talking to her she did not give clear instructions. My writing ability got worse in this class. Would not recommend. Save yourself the anger and stress and do not take this class with her.
