Loves what she does and it shows! Great Professor! Her goal is to have all her students have fun while learning. If you have the chance to take her class, do it! It will be the best decision you've ever made! It's nice to have a professor who loves what they teach - and it shows!
Mrs. Z is an INCREDIBLE teacher! She's probably the best teacher i've had in the last 12 years and it shows that she loves teaching. Always helpful, and always making class fun. Besides from class, she lets you into her personal life, and some of the things she's done have been absolutely amazing! TAKE ONE OF HER CLASSES!
LOVE HER!!!!!! I'm taking another one of her classes. She has a great teaching style, shes real she really cares about her students and I was soo interested in her class. Funny class .. tests go w.notes and she tells you what will be on it! TAKE HER!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mrs. Zaranek is the best teacher I've had at Macomb, ever. It's too bad that she just started teaching here and I'm about to transfer out! She is extremely helpful, clear, thorough, and very smart. She succeeds in making a very enjoyable class while also teaching lots of ENGAGING information and skills. There's so much more to say! You'd be a fool
Mrs. Z is the absolute best professor I've ever had! I'm currently working on my third degree-so I've had my share of professors. She loves what she teaches and it shows. DO NOT TEXT in her class or she will call you out! Anyone who doesn't get an "A" or at least a high "B" either doesn't show up for class or is just not college material.
Dr Z is passionate about teaching! Attendance is not mandatory but awards points for attending. Only way to fail this class is to either not show up, have a bad attitude or show up ****! Tests from lecture and typically easy to ace if you pay attention! Reviews all test material prior to test. Extra credit availble.
Mrs. Z is the best professor at Macomb and I'm so happy she came here to teach! Works with students if they are unable to come to class, returns emails quickly. Easy "A" if you come to class, participate, and care. Only way to fail is if YOU screw up! Has a "movie week" for some time away from learning! Wish she were here sooner!
Mrs Z is passionate about education and compassionate with students! Can't wait to have her again next semester! Helpful, responds to emails quickly! Some students showed up to class under the influence-and they will be the ones who rate her in a negative way. Don't pay any attention to negative ratings-they probably don't even remember the class!
Awesome instructor who loves what she does. We need LOTS more teachers like her. A true humanitarian who still cares about people. A rare find indeed.
Dr. Zaranek is a wonderful teacher. She cares very much for her student's success. Easy to reach. Come to class, pay attention and you will do well. Very much into community service and that is great to see from a professor. Great passion and loves her students. Don't even try to text in class! I love this teacher and plan take her again!
Ms. Zaranek is a great teacher! If you want to be in a class where the teacher actually cares about the students..take her! She is funny and she always has a story to tell. She treats her students as equals. Attendance is mandatory but you'll want to come to her class! Take her, trust me you'll love her!
While she appears to know what she's talking about, all she does is show powerpoints with definations-never any real explanations. We never touched the book which was a waste of $90 and I could have used it elsewhere! We were also out of class a lot with "field trips" and guest speakers. Last class was one week before semester ended. Easy "A".
Ms. Zaranek is the best teacher I have ever had at Macomb. She actually wants to teach her class & enjoys being there with her students. She is very helpful & always answers questions. Attendance is mandatory but trust me..you wont mind going to her class. She always makes its fun and interesting. Study your notes she gives you and you'll do great!
Awesome teacher! Best at Macomb! Easy to understand and I wish I had her again! She actually makes class fun, not just boring stuff like all other teachers, and notes are super easy and mostly short.
A fairly good teacher, kept classes interesting.
Words can not express how awful this class was. Her information is always so very far from correct or even appropriate. My family's religion was insulted/ridiculed to my face and in front of the entire class and called me a liar when i tried to defend it. She also doesnt give -'s or +'s so my grade was bumped down to a B.
She was a delight to have as a teacher this summer. I really loved her compassion for people and her students. She is cut and dry. She had in class tests which were harder than I thought they would be. She makes you think and you can't look everything up in the book, you have to think. I would take her for any class.
Easy A. Open book tests. Very energetic and upbeat, unlike many professors at Macomb. She talks about interesting topics but seems to be very opinionated. Only problem is I can see a lot of people getting offended easily. Sometimes I felt like I was being judged or put down because she brings her judgements to the table.
straight up mrs. z = best teacher ever....nicest lady you will ever meet... i was not the best student and gave me a new look on school
Awesome teacher. Very nice. Loved her class. Very helpful. Her lectures are just powerpoints, but there is a lot of group work which was nice.
Greatgreatgreat
Ms.Z is awsome. I have taken her for 3 classes and all have been a great learning experience. She is really there to help the students and teach us something. If you need help in school or outside of school she is a Prof. to go to. Her classes are interesting and fun, they are easy as long as you do the work and she doesn't give you alot.
by far the best teacher ever...shes makes class enjoyable even if ur not interested in sociology. She is extremely helpful and will do any thing for you. By far one of the nicest people I have ever met.
Easily best professor ever. At the very beginning of the class, she told us we would never be bored, and was she ever right. Amazing teacher, I just wish I could take more of her classes. Tests are all open note, but harder than would expect. Many extra credit opportunities available.
Great class! Discussions were interesting and she makes sure you understand the concepts. Not hard to get an A either, she gives lots of extra credit and tests are open-book.
Love, love! She is the best teacher Ive ever had at Macomb! If someone doesnt like her then they dont understand sarcasm. She cares about her students. You can give your opinion & if she doesnt agree youll start a debate with her, which is hilarious. Sign in sheet is everyday. But if you plan on missing let her know before hand, shes cool. Take her!
The best professor I have ever had by far! She cares about her students and she is always willing to help I honestly try to take all of her classes...trust me she is worth the time and money without a doubt!
Dr. Zaranek was a pleasure to have as a professor. She has an obvious passion for teaching and cares for her students and their education. She is extremely helpful when you need her, and treats her students with respect. You can feel comfortable asking a question or making a point. She encourages you to think, and is a genuinely compassionate woman
Trust me!Super easy!!!
I've had her for all the classes she teaches. Would highly recommend.
An awesome professor who really loves to teach. She really knows her stuff and how to make it interesting to learn. One of my favorites!
her class was so easy and she is always willing to listen to anyone
so amazing I love her and everything about her class. She is amazing and does her best to make sure everyone does their best. She is so helpful out side of the class room and would die for her students
Let's just say that Zaranek is highly overrated. I was expecting some great professor. She's good, not great.
MS.Z IS WONDERFUL!!!!! Best teacher i have had at Macomb! She is so fun to listen to. She really makes you think outside the box and it was just a great experience being in her class. She loves her students, and it really shows. I would highly recommend taking any of her classes. SHE IS GREAT!!!!!
loved her teaching and over all caring for her students!!!!
If you want an easy A, take this class and professor. Not at all informed about the world and presents clearly untrue information at facts. I don't think she reads current events or even listens to the news. Has clear favorites. If you show up you can get an A but you will learn next to nothing. If interested in soc, take another teacher.
Most inspiring professor I ever had! Show up and you will smile every day, because she does. Extra credit is in community service, and it is FUN!
This teacher is amazing. She is inspiring, funny, and knows how to be relatable. I decided to take her social work class the semester after first having her, just to have her again. Take her if you want to learn effortlessly and get a fun easy grade.
Take her class! She is awesome, very passionate about teaching and Social Work careers. Take notes, volunteer twice and you will pass the class. Not much work but you will learn...isn't that what counts??
Rochelle is a fantastic professor. She works hard to engage and motivate her students. Two exams (open book, open note), a group project, four hours of community service, and an interview with a practicing social worker that you write up as a paper. Extra credit is available.
She is amazing! She is such a passionate person. You will love her class!
awesome teacher, very passionate about what she does. open note exams.
Ms. Z was an awesome professor. She is very passionate about helping the less fortunate. She does want you to walk away with new knowledge. I enjoyed going to class. We had 3 open note exams(summer)and she would review what was on the exams the day before. The only complaint I would have would be that the class wasn't challenging enough.
amazinggg professor. open book exams, interesting class, compassionate teacher. easy A...take her!!!!!!
Amazing professor I wish she taught all of my classes!!! Ms Z is extremely helpful, she makes sure you understand the material and overall she is fun :) Take her you will not regret it
I took this class online and it was by far the easiest online class I've ever taken. It made the subject enjoyable to work on. In addition to this class, I took 3 classes on campus and could've handled one more. The text book is needed to reference for the 2 exams, but I didn't read any chapters. Definitely recommend her!
Dr. Zaranek really is a great instructor. She sets all of her students up for success and the majority do well. It shocked me this semester to watch people blow off major assignments, don't be that person! You'll learn a LOT in this class and I'd highly recommend it.
she was a very great teacher i would take her again if i needed too she was so nice and helpful!
Very good professor! All exams are open book and super easy. Her class is very interesting and fun!
I love this woman! I enjoyed the class. I looked forward to going and gaining new knowledge. She helped build my confidence, but most of all, her passion to help people made the impact on my heart! Take her class, you'll love her too!!
Her extremely biased liberal views became very apparent. I started submitting papers that I knew she would agree with just so I could get a good grade, even though it was supposed to be my opinion. Shes a hardcore feminist and although she seemed nice, she needs to stop knocking off points for someone expressing a different viepoint than her own
Horrible grading system. Does not give +'s or -'s. I got a 79.47% and got stuck with a C when the cutoff for a B is 80%. Felt like points were handed out arbitrarily rather than based on clear definitions of what constitutes a lost point. One assignment is to literally make a fool of yourself in public and write an essay about peoples reactions.
I thought this class would be easy and interesting from the RAVE reviews its getting. Ms Z is unclear in what she is looking for with her assignments, and it's a lot of work. Even after doing the assignments COMPLETE and ON TIME, I am barely passing. Luckily she offers extra credit. I hope I can pass the extra credit assignment!
I loved this class. Ms. Z along with the concepts have made me chose to take more classes in sociology.
very awesome class! she is great at teaching and really cares! you learn so much and the tests are open book. i recommend doing the community service she provides, it is life changing. going to class is actually fun because of the discussions. The paper required is very easy, overall this teacher will be your favorite hands down.
Unwilling to work with student that requested work early because of an upcoming trip, I asked to complete two weeks of work in one and she wouldn't provide anything other than a hint as to what the discussion board MIGHT cover. I've never had this issue with another teacher. She is very slow to reply to emails as well.
BEST TEACHER EVER.. WILL HONESTLY HELP YOU W ANYTHING!!!! TAKE HER CLASS
Seriously.. BEST TEACHER EVER!!! She is VERY understanding!!! highly request her class to take
Dr. Zaranek most certainly knows her stuff! In my opinion, her grading of discussion board posts was a little harsh, but nonetheless, I succeeded in her class. All exams are open book, and you will have to write a few highly structured "essays". Community service extra credit is offered. Social science is not my forte, but I enjoyed the course.
This was a VERY stressfull class. I completed all assignments on time and AS DIRECTED but received average grades for them due to her BIASED views as somebody else already mentioned. If you are a liberal feminist then you shouldn't have a problem passing this class. Everyone else should prepare to struggle and stress during this course.
Ms. Z teaches online and on-ground. She answers emails, even on Sunday night! Class was fun and the 2-page essays are easy. A previous commenter said that one assignment was to make a fool of yourself. That is just wrong. And the only way you can get a bad grade is if you are lazy. Her grading is totally fair, if you follow the directions!
Impossible to receive full credit on any assignment, and this showed when comparing my grade to the class average. No matter how much extra work you put into posts she still marks you down. Also the 2 exams are 50 questions each and worth a measly 25 points, seriously its a joke. So you can do great on an exam and it has no benefits to your grade
While I believe the course is a good introduction for the profession I was not impressed with acessability for disabled students. I was frequently hospitalized during the semester I took this course and I believe my absence was interpreted by her as a reason to grade down. Loved the lectures & practicum.
Z is kinda awesome. The class wasn't everything i had hoped it would be though. As long as your not lazy show up and do the work you'll pass with the B you need. tests are open book and note.
Ms. Z is one of the best, most helpful professors i have had yet! She always provides feedback for every assignment so you know how to receive full credit. Not a lot of homework at all. No quizzes, two exams (both online with notes) and three easy essay assignments. Also offers 20 points of extra credit! Awesome teacher!!!!!
Anybody who downs this online class doesn't put in the effort, I could not have asked for a more crystal clear professor than Zaranek. She was awesome, passing was not a challenge. I am taking 16 credits this semester, work full time, and passed this class with an A. Great professor.
Z is so compassionate & inspiring. Every day she inspires me to be a better person. I was on the fence with whether or not I wanted to go into the social work profession... Z had me convinced within the first 20 minutes of stepping into her classroom. There is ALWAYS a wait-list for her class & it's for a good reason.
I took her online 1010 class and it was impossible to receive full credit on any assignment. She's constantly marking you down on everything and it adds up! When giving feedback she is NOT clear about what you need to improve on at all. I'm an A student and I received a B in a class which I should have passed easily with an A.
Shes such a great person as well as a great professor. She gives you wonderful volunteering opportunities. If you do not buy the book, you will not pass the tests. The notes cover about 10% of the material on the tests. Her tests are open book so I would look up every problem in the book and still only get a B.
I took her SOCY 1010 class online and it was impossible to receive a full credit!! Even though you follow her rubrics, you won't get it. It's so unfair!!!!
Very easy. Discussions can be tough but all she wants you to do is be thoughtful & write AS MUCH as you can. It's not that hard. Wish I wouldn't have bought the book because I barley even read the first chapter but everyone's different. She doesn't give + or -, which is fine with me. I got a 91% & it was an A not an A- :)
Is not very clear on grading, at least for the online class. She posts rubrics but then will grade your discussion board on whether or not your views agree with yours. Tells you to use the book, then not use the book. Her online exams are all one question at a time and you cannot overview them or review them. So frustrating.
She's a great teacher and very easy, no homework and 3 tests all open book and no final!!! would take her again, shes funny too.
I LOVE THIS TEACHER!! she made this class fun to go to, never dreaded it. Her lectures were relevant to life and made me think in a whole new perspective. Open book and open notes tests and final exam. Favorite class, favorite teacher, TAKE HER!!! Easy A!
Amazing Teacher! Take her if you can!!
Mrs Z is so inspirational and intellectual. This class was easy but i also learned so much. In her summer course all tests were open book and open note so the book is important. she is very funny and incorporates current events in her lectures so it is interesting. i would love to take another class of hers
I took this online class, did my best as far as research when it came to discussion boards even went above and beyond still did not get good credit she will mark you down based off of her opinion! very iritated
Very good teacher. But very tough. No matter how hard you research on your discussion board you will never get full credit. My discussion boards where amazing going above and beyond, the highest grade I got was a 90
Absolutely loved Ms. Z!! Easiest class I've taken at Macomb. I never dreaded going to class and she only gives out three exams, all open note. Highly recommend!!!!
Never a dull moment. Makes you feel at home in class. Great professor! Take her in any class you can!!!
Super open about topics and a lot of group interaction. Loved going to class and all tests are open book open note. She is not active on Canvas or Angel though. Easy A forsure.
The best professor Ive had by far, very insightful and inspirational! She is very clear and precise and is there for you as long as you put in the effort. I highly recommend taking a class with her, if you don't do well then its because you didn't try. She is always there to help her students.
I had the pleasure of having her for two of my classes, and she is simply amazing. This class was not difficult you would seriously have to not do anything to fail. She is very passionate about her work so don't take it if you aren't interested. I loved this class it was very inspirational and looked forward to it every Wednesday.
I believe Z makes reaching out and making societal changes her life's work. With that said, her lectures tend to focus on herself. If you nod your head and follow her around with school-girl adoration you will do fine. I received fulfillment from the volunteering, but the content in class was lacking.
Professor Zaranek is a wonderful Professor who has the following characteristics. She is Warm, Compassionate, Caring, and very Intelligent. She provides valuable feedbacks, she's also very dedicated, patience and never ending encouragement. She is an awesome Professor. Good Luck Dr. Z. Thank you!
Zaranek is wonderful. She may be a tough grader but she has a great heart. If you have any issues, like ones that affect your grade, just talk to her and she will help you improve. Attendance is important in grading and you will need the book.
This is a great class to take for your first semester of college since the workload is not too bad. Open notes and open book exams make getting an A in the class easy. Make sure to do the extra credit volunteer work to get an A in this class. Take this class in person, tried to take this online and the workload was just too insane.
One of the easiest classes I've taken so far. Professor Zaranek is extremely involved in lectures and in students lives outside the classroom, she gives plenty of opportunities for extra credit. All tests are open book, open note.
This is an amazing professor. This class fills up quickly. If you are interested in social sciences or going into social work, it is a must! Class goes by quickly because she keeps it so interesting! There is a group project and an interview paper. Both prepare you for future transfer. I said show up and pass; not so. If you show up and do work!
Believe what the others said about her online set up You WILL not get full credit on her Discussion Boards and even if you get a passing grade but not 100% on them, your grade will drop 3% Her Essays/Assignments are more of common sense but with DBs her instructions are so unclear There's no point in reviewing her powerpoint's theyre worthless
Her class was awesome. I would take her again.
Professor Zaranek wants you to learn and will bend over backwards to accomplish that. Mrs.Z cares and wants you to do well in life. She also practices what she teaches volunteering her time to help others in an effort to make the world a better place. Put a little time and effort into this class and you should get an A.
I liked her so much in SOC1010 I took her for SOC1210 not even knowing it was a social worker class. There's more to do in this class, group projects and an interview but not impossible. She wants you to succeed and this class prepares you for what is coming school wise and career wise.I was sad when it was over.
Really easy class. She was very nice and helpful and grades quickly. Expect one discussion question per week and short but super easy essays. This was an easy A!!
It's not that she was hard, but she was very distracted during classes. She has students grade your homework because she down sat want to spend too must ch time on it, but has no problem loading you up on things to learn for the tests.
Prof Zaranek was very understanding and helpful towards me. The online class is super easy because all she requires you to do each week is post 175+ word response on a discussion board and then respond to two other people and then every other week she assigns an essay. She is very organized and the class was set up perfectly. Highly recommend.
Dr. Zaranek is a great teacher who wants to see you win. She will help you succeed as long as you're willing to do the work. She gives great feed back to help you on your next assignment. I had an assignment I uploaded and there was trouble getting it in. She still gave me a chance to turn it in to receive credit. she is wonderful.
Probably the toughest professor I've ever had. She is a very tough grader and the amount of work for this class is unreal.
Looks like Professor Zaranek has been rating herself on here. So sad... She is WORST professor at Macomb Community College. Hands down.
The only "bad" thing I'd say about Professor Zaranek is that she's kind of a tough grader. She's not too harsh, but I definitely didn't agree with her grading sometimes. Don't let that scare you though!!!! Other than that, she's an excellent professor. She has a word count on your assignments, but she does that with the best intention. TAKE HER!!!!
After not being in school for a while she made me feel credible and taught with great understanding of where I grew up. Thank you for an awesome class.
Phenomenal Professor.
Truly a great professor. Very caring towards her students. Enjoyed attending her class. Very Also inspired me to get more involved with my community.
Interesting lectures. Just do the work assigned and you should have no problem getting an A. I personally enjoyed the class. Decided to change my major to social work after being in this class. Thanks Dr. Z!!
I love her! There are very little notes and she likes to talk about her experiences. There isn't much to grade in this class. She also has open note exams.
The whole class consists of one discussion a week with two thoughtful responses, in addition to a 2 page essay every other week. This is the first online class I've taken, and this lady is extremely organized. She gives you detailed feedback on every assignment turned in and gives you everything you need to succeed in the class.
she is very good professor answers her email within couple hours and give a good feedback on all assignment and essays. every week she makes the student write post about a topic that is given and respond to two different classmates, she also have an essay every other week, and two exams(midterm and final) and 20 extra credits opportunity
GREAT! we did 3 tests, alll open book open note. she has experience in the field that she brings into the classroom. Always very real and honest. An awesome lady!
Dr. Z was absolutely amazing! Take sociology 1010 online! She lays out everything very organized. Each unit is broken down for you. If you read the book and hit each of her requirements on the rubric you will get 100%. She is an Easy A if you just apply yourself. She gives back feedback literally IMMEDIATELY. She has a good sense of humor!Take her!
I have never had such an incredible professor until I met Mrs.Z!! She is an exceptional woman and highly inspirational. You know she knows her stuff in social work because she helped the author write her book, she was on the front line in a lot of poverty issues, she helps the college better themselves and is just an incredible human.
Dr. Zaranek engages us and leads by example when showing how important it is to help others. This has changed my life from being a self-absorbed person to one who realizes how thankful I should be each day for what I have. I wish she taught more classes. Dr. Zaranek is a teacher who walks the talk and is genuine and so kind to all.
I didn't learn much about the topic, but I did learn all about her accomplishments were and how "great" she was at everything. Constantly discussed politics which is fine, except she only talked about HER political views and continued to insult the opposing side. I know she raises lots of money for the school, but she needs to learn how to TEACH.
Mrs. Z was the best professor I have ever had!!!!!!!! She lets you use open notes and open books on her tests, and we only had one paper throughout the semester. She taught from powerpoint and always made them interesting. She tries to get to know everyone in the class. Mrs. Z is the BEST.
She is a pretty good teacher, lots and lots of notes. Open note open book exams so that's good, she gives you a lot of test answers so as long as you pay attention you will be fine. She does talk a lot about how she is a "real scientist" and how she taught at Wayne State University for 10 years.
She is very caring to her students. She will make sure that you pass if you at least show effort and ask questions. We do group activities that are non-graded, which I think is interesting because you can have conversations and a fun class activity. This class is basically just note-taking, group exercise activities, and studying. GREAT PROFESSOR!!
Clearly does not update her information. Doesnt give the option to go over exams to see what students can improve in. Makes class all about her. If you dont do community service youre a bad person. Not learning anything. Book is used. She doesnt stay on topic. Its awful.
Professor Zaranek is awesome. She is willing to help you if you need it and does a lot of volunteer work and helps others in everyday life. It was wonderful having her for Intro to Social Work. She expects your attendance so don't miss class. She is very friendly. She makes you want to be a better person.
most caring person at macomb. amazing professor. gives credit for volunteer work. she's a great person outside of class. Everyone should have the chance to take one of her classes, she changed my mind about schooling. wonderful! HIGH RECOMMEND
One of the best professors at MCC. I wish I could take her for all my classes. You have to try to fail the class. She literally gives you a practical layout of the exams. She really only tells you to write down the stuff you NEED to know for the exams, slim to no homework, 1 super easy paper and extra credit opportunity. Amazing class! Learned alot
I don't know how she doesn't have a 5.0. She is the easiest teacher I have ever had. she gives 3 exams, 1 essay, requires 1 type of community service, and tracks attendance. The exams are all open note/book. you have to try to fail. She makes class very interesting and I never got bored. I really looked forward to coming to class. Best professor.
Dr. Zaranek is in my eyes the holy grail of professors. She is one of the most empathetic people I have ever met, understanding that not everyone learns the same way and ensures that ALL students are able to succeed. Take her course to learn from the textbook but also from her stories. The lives she is able to influence through teaching is amazing.
Every week discussion. Essays are hard. No quizzes, two exams. Tough grader. Organized course but assignment are not clear. She responds fast to messages and comments. Don't buy a textbook if you are taking an online classwaste of money. Extra credit is too much if you don't have a lot of free time.
AMAZING!!! i have her right now and LOVE her. 3 tests throughout the class and all are open book and note. she gives you extra credit opportunities and one easy paper. would take her again, highly recommend!!
Was very good at getting back to me on assignments. However, she is a very tough grader. She wants closing sentences on discussion posts, basically a paragraph, and wants them written like an english assignment when she is a sociology teacher. She really makes you work for a grade when this is an intro class and should be an easy A.
A really nice professor! Ive heard other professors that make sociology more work than it needs to be. Professor Zaranek didnt do that! She actually made the class enjoyable by keeping us engaged in conversations and letting us use notes on the tests, which others dont let you do, and also no homework except for 1 easy paper. Take her!
Professor Z was so amazing. Her class was super easy and enjoyable. No homework, except for 1 essay at end of semester. Grades easy if she knows youre working hard. Attendance is mandatory like any other class, but shes very understanding if you have something going on. Extra credit, open note/book tests.
A real Peach! She's put the work in and knows what she's teaching inside out. She cares about people and practices what she preaches. Not a hard class, some group projects, and notes/open book tests plus she give's you the questions the week before. You're a clown if you don't get at least a B and that's without trying.
She's an awesome person with credentials. Not a hard class and tests are notes and open book. No effort for a B but at least have a pulse. I enjoyed her lectures and interaction with everybody.
Sad this was the last class I could take with her. If you're not into social work or helping others and are just taking her class because it's a requirement you might not see her in the light that I do but even saying that I would have to say she's a likable professor and her tests are open book/notes, she goes through the questions the week prior.
Great and inspirational professor. I am taking her again this semester. She's a busy woman but she still takes the time she needs with you, especially if you need any questions answered. Highly recommended.
Best teacher I've ever had, she really makes sure that everyone is clear on what is going on and what assignments/tests are coming up. The work is not very difficult and she si very passionate about everything she teaches.
SHE'S AMAZING!
Such a great, caring professor! Her lectures are very interesting and class was super easy, open book/ note tests. Also gives lots of opportunity to get extra credit
She is prompt with responses to your emails but is a super tough grader. I was on the honor roll all throughout high school but I am barely passing her class.
Caring and respectful person. One of the easiest As. First half of class group discussions that are fun, not graded. Repeats herself but she motivates the class to speak for what they believe in. I learned so many important life skills. 3 tests open book/note. Study guide + Jeopardy gives all answers. EC given (easy). 1 essay abt yourself. FUN
Class is all about herself and her political views. She teaches that her opinions are 100% factual. Brags about all the great things she's done. It is an easy class, though, and she is very nice/understanding, and makes you feel comfortable, unless you disagree with her. Extra credit and gives away test answers, but I'm still annoyed with her.
Unsure why the previous review is so inaccurate. Dr. Z almost always interacts with her students and easily applies the textbook to current day events. She leads the discussions with critical thinking questions and often times refers to her own life experiences to promote additional discussions. Politics is a minimal component of the course.
her exams are open book the easiest class she wants all her students to pass and be relaxed
She is quick to grade assignments but is very picky. Even though I earned A's in all other classes, getting an A in this introductory course was difficult.
Id definitely take her class again just because of the lectures, even though if I dont need to take the class, Id just sit and enjoy her teaching. I was lucky that I had this class and got the chance to meet her, got bless.
She just talked about her political views all the time and stated them as fact. I wanted to tell her that your not a politics professor your a sociology professor so teach me what I paid for. Would not recommend. Tough class.
This professor is the absolute best. She explains in detail, gives you points for community service projects and expects the best out of you. She is easy to talk to, down to earth and will let you know what you need help in. She is a beautiful person and fair in grading.
Ms. Z is a truly great professor, mentor, and humanitarian. She really wants you to take something from her class - she accomplishes this by making it fun. Lots of group activities, discussions, easy exams. She isn't trying to load you up with work, but rather with a sense of understanding of the subject to which she is teaching.
Exceptional human being - Ms. Z solidified my decision to pursue social work practice as a profession. Minimal note-taking in class, lots of group activities (be ready to socialize). Her exams are not hard as long as you come to class. She is truly trying to set her students up for success. I wish I could take her for all my classes.
Ms. Z was one of the best profs!! set up for you to pass. grades based off of one (easy, 2 pages) essay, 3exams (open book),community service extra credit& attendanceicipation. you spend 1/2 of the class doing group work & 1/2 of the class taking notes on a short power point filled with exam questions. You only need the book if u want 4 exam
Zaranek is laid back but she's a very compassionate person. I respect her and I would take her again if I had the opportunity. The only negative aspect for me is that the class is based on a few things because there isn't submitted homework.
Z is super passionate about others and the world. Ppl like her make the world a better place. I wish I met her in the 70s. Only thing I'd change is more assignments. FYI she does grade on attendance. She is an inspirational person. I don't think she liked me very much but I still like her.
Very hardddd
I honestly loved this professor. At first she grades hard so you can start putting more work in but then she becomes easy. You have to write an essay every other week if your taking it online and only midterm and final exam plus discussions every week. I passed with an A+
All tests were open note and open book which made life super easy and only 1 paper due all semester which was also extremely easy. If you turn it in early shed give you feedback and let you redo it for a higher grade if you wanted. Does powerpoints so you really dont need the book but helpful for the tests. Super fun class would take again
Was marked down five points for taking a self care day when the class was told at the beginning that it would be okay to take them. Her attendance markdowns brought my grade a full letter grade down. Really enjoyed this class... but it was ruined by the pettiness of attendance markdowns. I excelled and earned As in all major assignments.
ONLINE COURSE 8 WEEKS: Weekly lengthy discussion forums that are nitpicked to almost guarantee you never get a 100%. When asked how to improve your performance, she gives a broad and generic answer that you do not benefit from. Is not willing to work with students to help them succeed. Only two tests: midterm and final-grade majorly based on that
The way she grades is confusing. The standards are clearly put, professor does not stick to them. Does not grade with proper English standards and formats, but rather with her own. Feedback within the same day, but in my experience mostly negative and not helpful. I am not one to get low grades but, right now she is my lowest grade: struggling B-
I like the professor. She always gave good feedback and very responsive and encouraging. The only thing I didnt like about her class was the discussion. They are very lengthy.
The sad reality is that shes the only option for a introductory social work class. So just try your best. Sociology, theres more options of professors thankfully.
Took her for an 8 week intro course. She grades hard and has no wiggle room. When asking for further feedback and how to improve, I got no response. I definitely should've looked her up before I took the class, especially since these are the last 2 credits I needed to complete my program. I'd rather finish in the summer than deal with this!
Ive been at macomb for 4 years and I have never had such a problem with a professor. She grades everything so critically its ridiculous. Ive reached out to her many times about more feedback on assignments and she does not respond. I asked for a 1 day extension on an assignment due to a death in my family and she said no. Do not take her class!!
Sociology 1010 was an overall easy class. Professor Zaranek is really nice and will answer questions fairly quickly. She can be a tough grader, but if you put in to work and pay attention to directions you will do well. She offers an opportunity for extra credit that is worth 20 points. There are no surprises on her exams either.
This class is not one you can phone it in on. I took it as a 12 week course online (due to COVID) and almost dropped it once I saw the syllabus; I am glad I stuck with it. Ms. Z is a tough grader, but I found she gave good feedback for her grades. There was a group project and a community service requirement for the class. Her tests were open note.
This professor does not grade easy. Sometimes the way she grades things does not make sense, the whole class and assignments is based on discussions so if thats something you're into I would recommend this class.
Professor Zaranek is hands down the best instructor out there. Expectations are clear at the onset of the course and maintained throughout. Her feedback and guidance are prompt, on target, and inspirational. She embodies all that a great teacher and mentor truly is. I would highly recommend taking any class she has to offer!
Your grade is dependent on weekly discussion board postings (1 initial and 2 responses, 3 total), a handful of short papers, and two tests (midterm and final). Ms. Z has high expectations with regards to word count, but it is so you are able to fully engage with the topics each week. Take the time to craft in depth responses and you'll be golden.
I took intro to social work with this professor and swung an A without too much trouble. If you take the time to write good discussion forum responses you'll be fine, it just takes a little bit of critical thinking. She likes to see a summary paragraph for everything; "overall..." "in summation..." etc. She is a tough grader but gives good feedback
She is a lovely teacher who will make you learn a lot about sociology. This class is easygoing and not that hard.
This class is easy, but not challenging. I quickly began to lose interest. The assignments are repetitive. weekly discussion post are due every wed, with a minimum of 175 words. Discussion responses are due each fri, with a minimum 175 words. Which is insane because everyone is basically stating the same facts. no real assignments.
Assignments are the same each week, really easy if you just put the time into it. She grades somewhat rough but as long as you meet the discussion requirements its an easy A.
A discussion question every week and you have to reply to 2 people but she doesn't tell you what to reply about to your 2 classmates and you can never seem to please her and her comments she leaves when grading do not help. Besides that a group project, 2 exams, you have to find and interview a social worker, and four hours of community service.
Professor Zaranek is one of my favorite teachers at MCC so far, the class itself was pretty easy and straight forward. Discussions are a big part if your grade but if you are reading and following directions then there is no reason you should not pass, she gives you the directions cut and clear. I will be taking her again for SOCY-1210. 10/10
Going into this course and reading the reviews of this professor I was quite nervous. After completing this course and receiving my grade I must say these reviews are based off of students that truly wanted an easy A, which you will not get from Professor Zaranek. She expects you to earn your grade and I really enjoyed this class.
Super tough grader and unclear with responses.
There are no real homework assignments at all. Just a discussion post on Wed & 2 replies by Fri. She is EXTREMELY critical about your post and even replies too. I got a 8/10 each week & she said I had great initial posts but always had something to say about my replies even though they were full of details. She just has to find something wrong!!
Hands down the best professor I've ever had at Macomb. Was so understanding through the transition to online during Covid's initial outbreak. Stuck up for her students, and genuinely cared about every single one of us. Would recommend her 100%.
This professor will not respond to any messages you send her. Grades assignments very confusingly, and again won't respond when you ask for help. 10/10 would not recommend
Very tough grader, your work has to be perfect to get a decent grade. But overall the class is not difficult and its just graded as such. You really have to put a ton of time into your work to do well.
Not a bad teacher, expect a lot of reading - but you'll learn a lot. Weekly posts with minimum word count gets annoying - don't expect to get a full score, she will always want more examples etc. Only two tests with lots of time. You'll need community service hours, but she helps with that. Most work is due within first 3 days of the week.
the class itself wasn't to hard, but it was just so much busy work. I took this as an 8 week course and could get the the work done in about a day, but the word min on discussion boards was too much and she graded very harshly on them. I had never received over 8.5/10 on them no matter how much work i put into them, and her feedback wasn't helpful
The way this professor grades is absolutely a joke. She will never give you the grade you deserve. I have spoken to students in my class, and seen on canvas that she does not grade higher than a 9/10 on discussion posts even when you go unbelievably above and beyond. Considering she doesn't teach but rather assigns busy work, it's a complete scam.
She gives guidelines, but then creates new ones to grade you on when she feels like it. Not consistent at all. My grades and effort did not match across all assignments at all.
Lots of discussion-based work, but the material is interesting. Grading can be tough, so stay on top of the readings and use unstuck AI for study prep. Overall, a manageable class if you put in the effort.
This is by far the best teacher i've ever had in my life. If you can take this teacher PLEASE do, i swear i can't say enough good things about her. There was only 2 tests the whole semester, and they were so easy, and there was a discussion board and a essay each week, but it's just about stuff in your life that goes along what we're learning. best
This is the 2nd class I've taken with Professor Z. She's great, just particular with her grading. End your discussion posts with a closing statement, relate the content in your responses to how a social worker would contribute, and add personal examples. She cares about what she teaches, is very knowledgeable, and is very kind with questions.
You can try your best and still get a bad grade.
Professor Zaranek was nice enough, but easily the toughest grader I have ever had. There was no such thing as a perfect grade on any assignment; she always had to dock points for something.
This professor is very annoying and a very harsh grader. You can try your best and she will still give you a harsh grade. She is also very inconsiderate, she has this assignment where you have to go to shelters which now a day everyone wants a tb test and all these other things, which I don't mind volunteering, but some people don't have a car or $
absolutely love her! the only thing I didn't like was for my online class with her, she made us interview a social worker for 25 points and also do community service hours for another 25 points. id get it if it was for an in person class. but I took this class online due to my busy schedule and was unable to complete the interview assignment.
