Very knowledgeable on the subject, and still young enough to be enthusiastic about it (hasn't been teaching long enough to get burnt out like some of the other instructors). Exams were very tough, but I learned much more than with easier profs since.
A good teacher, and knows a lot about what he's teaching. Often allowed multiple people to take tests at later dates, but the tests were always very difficult.
Very laid back and friendly. He's young and enthusiastic. He has a slight German accent to make listening to him more interesting. His tests are fair difficulty and can be easier than the homework.
He's a pretty cool teacher. He gives really good notes, and makes things pretty easy to understand. You have homework from the textbook, and his tests are really fair. He has a SLIGHT German accent and can crack a joke every once and awhile. Take him! He's one of the easiest MAT210 teachers from what I've heard from others!
He's pretty OK at teaching, BUT he goes way too fast and jumps from one subject to another in ways that WILL confuse you. You really have to stay in pace with him. He writes notes so confusing on the board and doesn't give you time to write them, and after your done, you see him making up example for another formula. And too much math jargon!
he takes attendance at the beginning of the year but if you dont show up its not like you get kicked out...he will reward you though at the end of the semester and bump your grade up! PAY ATTENTION...you cant expect to not do your work/go to class and still get a good grade. he's HILARIOUS too!!! MADE MY DAY every MWF!
Rochus is awesome! Great teacher! Definitely eyecandy as well
Rochus is the most amazing professor in the world. Not only does he teach well but he has an amazing sense of style and a great German accent. Definately take this class!!
Though the class materials might be difficult, he tries his best to make sure his students understand. He is very relaxed on attendance and late-work, as long as you try to learn. For my class, the homework was only worth 20% of the grade, but the three tests weren't hard. Also, despite his German accent, he is VERY clear- always good at ASU.
The best math teacher I've had in all of my years of schooling. Makes a hard subject very understandable. I had to retake this class because I got an E in it the semester before by a joke of a teacher, Fishman, and this semester took it from Rochus and got an A-. Uses webwork but re-opened every homework assignment at the end of the semester TAKE H
Great Professor! Explained everything till EVERYONE understood it. really helpful when you needed xtra help, and would reopen webworks when needed, exams were VERY similar to reviews. if you put in the effort and go to class youll get a good grade and alot out of it....
I cant say enough good things about Rochus. Friendly guy who is actually INVOLVED with his students as well as the subject. He creates a positive atmosphere, even if you cant answer a question; he'll just make a joke about it. Great review before tests, lenient on due dates, and clear. I dropped 210 twice before passing his class with a B.
took 210 last semester and it was a breeze. he explains everything SO clearly and will answer any questions in class and via email. tests are just like reviews! he wants you to do well. great guy!
Online Homework- He likes Web Works- the hardest homework problems around. Hello!!!
Rochus is amazing, I wish he taught 211. The homework IS hard, but it's doable. I only had to go get help on a problem once in the beginning, when my math skills were really rusty. He explains everything really well in class and never gets impatient with questions like some profs. Also it helps that his slight German accent is AMAZING to listen to.
Very helpful, always explains if you do not understand. Makes a hard class as easy as it can be
Rochus is a really good guy. Sometimes hard to understand the points he is trying to get across, but that also has to do with the rigor of the course. Lenient on due dates, will extend webworks if asked. Tests are alike study guides.
Rochus really tried to help out with things. He would extend homework deadlines and even cut down amount of homework when we asked him to. Study guides are very simlar to the test.
Rochus makes a difficult class relatively easy. He always extended Webwork when we needed him to and he grades tests pretty easy. Tests are similar to the reviews he posts on BlackBoard. And best of all, he didn't use minuses for the final grades, so I received an A instead of an A-.
He is straightforward. Sometimes hard to understand but generally gives you the material and homework. Extended the webwork (which was helpful) and always was helpful with questions in Office Hours. Seems like a great guy to me.
Good and fun teacher. Helps everyone to understand the material. Tries to keep the class involved in the lectures. Tests were fair with study guides that he posted. The final was extremely hard compared to the other tests (even with the study guide he gave). He extended webwork when several students asked.
Fair, good, funny teacher. Trys to keep the lectures fun and easy going in class. Extended webwork deadline for every assignment up to a month extra :) Tests were fair but the final was brutal compared to the other tests but he curved it a good amount
Very nice guy; doesn't waste a minute at his class but I took it dusring winter session. A lot of homework but always extends the deadlines. Got final A with 65% homework done! Gives generous partial credits on exam problems.
Boerner is such an amazing guy. He is really funny and his German accent just makes learning Calc fun. He pushed back our webwork due dates several times to the point where the entire semesters webwork wasn't due until the day of the final. I would definitely recommend him.
I love Rochus! He was deff the easiest MAT 210 teacher at ASU. He would use webworks for homework which wasnt the best but he would extend the due date for as long as you wanted. Literally you can take a month to do an assignment. His pre tests online are pretty much the same thing as his real tests. He helped out whenever you needed help.
he is the best math teacher ever! he explain everything clearly.his test is not hard. and what is most important is he really cares about his students. i am so glad that i had him as my math teacher . i took mat210 before but i drop it because the teacher was sucks and i thought i will never get an a for this course, but in his class, i got an A.
He's a really good teacher, super nice and always answers questions and checks to make sure we get whats going on. Easy to follow and helpful outside of class as well.
Definitely one of the best math teachers at ASU. He checks to make sure everyone gets him, his English skills are far better than any of the other foreign math professors (his accent won't be an issue), and he taught without the textbook to help the students save money. No surprises on the exams either. He made a very difficult subject fairly easy.
Easy to learn, he makes sure you understand everything. Grades easily and quizzes and tests are based on homework. Make sure to attend class and do the homework. Homework deadlines are negotiable if you are having trouble.
He is a really cool guy and offers a lot of help outside of class. It is your own fault if you do not do well in his class.
Prof. Boerner has a thick German accent, but he's usually easy to understand. His homework is very time-consuming but not too hard, and he's always willing to help (and negotiate for points on the final).
An excellent Calculus professor, lectures consist of explaining the key concepts in a logical and concise manner typically ending class with odd exceptions that make you think a bit. Grading/HW is very reasonable, one of my best math teachers ever.
Great math teacher, very helpful when needed. Just go to class and do the online homework and you'd do fine. Tests are complex, but studying what he told you to will help you be successful.
Real nice teacher i failed every test horribly but ended up passing the class wit a c. he is very easy to go to if you need help seek him out. he extends the homework if you need it but dont take advantage f his kindness..
I was SO happy to have Rochus as my calc teacher. He made concepts easy to understand and tried to make sure everyone was on the same page. Didn't use the textbook at all. The online homework kind of sucks but it's not bad. His class was always interesting and he has the best sense of humor. I definitely recommend his class.
Really passionate about the subject and explains the concepts well.
Rochus, Is a good Math Teacher. Yes he has a slight German accent, but it doesn't interfere. Tests where rather hard, he is picky with partial credit and marks off for things that are not errors, but "unclear process" in his math mind. He is pretty approachable, does crack a joke once in a while, but honestly probably best option for Calculus
For a class i was retaking, it wasnt bad. I ended up with a B in the class. He is very helpful when you ask him questions and will explain things until you understand him. Tests are fairly easy and straightforward if you study for them and go to class.
One of the best math teachers I have ever had! Cracks jokes and makes class interesting! Was disappointed that he wasn't going to be teaching MAT 251. I really recommend him if you get a chance to take him. Does have an accent but is very very easy to understand.
Definitely the best math teacher I've had at ASU. Took this class a previous semester and didn't pass but with him it was all so easy to understand I ended up with a good grade! Definitely would love to take more classes with him if it were possible. Just an overall nice guy in general too. Take his class!
Excellent professor! Definitely one of the best math teachers I've ever had. Uses tons of examples and grades very fairly. He does give pop quizes at the beginning of class so its important to go. He grades on a curve and gives extra credit. I've taken this class previously and failed miserably but I got a B with him. Wish he taught more classes!
Great Professor! He know's his stuff! He teaches at a steady pace & has very good timing to get through all the material that needs to be taught throughout the semester. He teaches by parts & will not move on untill everyone understands the material. He's open for question & willing to help! I loved him! TAKE HIM! math's hard but he makes it simple
Takes attendance and has pop quizzes. The Webwork is worth 10%, which helps a lot! The tests are a little difficult, but if you really understand the material, it's not too bad. Goes through everything systematically and gives lots of examples. Take notes! It helps. Has a German accent, but easy to understand. Overall very friendly and helpful guy!
He has 2 due date for the web work. I don't understand him even when repeats. He has no review questions similar to the exams which are useless..
I consider this class the "weed-out" class for Engineers. The first test for this class was worth the most points. Study VERY hard for this test and it should get easier from there. I suggest doing the webwork the same day or the day after he teaches the section. Do NOT let your webwork pile up. He's a great teacher if you apply yourself.
This class is pretty difficult although Dr. Boerner makes it interesting because he is still young and has interest in what he teaches. He has a slight accent but is still understandable. He curved every test as well as the quiz scores at the end of the year
One of the best math teachers at ASU.His tests are straight forward, he makes very clear what he wants in the test. Online homework is an important part of the great.Overall great teacher.
He def knows his math however can get confusing sometimes. Really cool guy and is available to help. Went too fast for my liking. Says you dont need the book i RECOMMEND you get it to fully understand! web work was a pain but easy points! records attendance regularly and gives quizzes every now and then
One of the best professors I have had for math. He is more than willing to help with anything you need. Do your homework, go to class, use his office hours and you will be fine. He is from Germany and has a funny accent but also likes to crack a few jokes each class, you'll get a good laugh out of him. I liked his class a lot!
He is a really great teacher and explains things really well and it eager to make sure that everyone understands. He is also very understandable and if you do the homework(which isn't bad at all) you will do fine.
A great teacher. He tries to explain what everything he teaches is used for in the real world. His tests are almost IDENTICAL to his practice tests so DO THEM. He gives HW every week that takes a couple hours for me to finish, fair hw grader. He makes the class easier than other teachers (second time taking this course). Attendance is mandatory!!!!
Professor Boerner is an extremely great math teacher. He has a swedish accent and is extremely thorough in his teaching. I hope to have him again in the future. The way he teaches involves the students. He is extremely enthusiastic about Math. He also relates everything to individuals degrees, tells you when you will use it in industry.
I hate and am terrible at math so I can't really say if it was easy or not. But if you love math, you should be okay. Thisss guy is so funny, the only reason I was okay with class is because his accent and attitude were great. So yeah, if math isn't your thing, good luck but either way hes a good choice! homework isnt due til last day!
Very good professor, that cares. Do the homework and study and you will be fine.
i loved this teacher. his accent was pretty hard to understand sometimes and he went really fast when writing notes, but if u go to his office hours and come to class if ur struggling, he will do everything he can help you. i wouldnt have passed if i didnt do both. clas is mand. great teacher would def. retake him if i had the option
He is an interesting teacher who tries to make his class fun, and will work any problem that is asked. all homework was online and due at the end of the year.
Boerner is an excellent Professor. It is a rarity to have a teacher who is as enthusiastic about the material he teaches. He really makes it quite easy to enjoy what is a rather dull topic. That said, his enthusiasm doesn't go all the way to making this an easy class. He's a fair grader, but the material is tricky, so study and you'll be fine.
OMG what I would say about Dr. Boerner!! My favorite math teacher of all times!! He is the best and he cares about his students a lot. The materials are not hard but they are tricky, so you need to take your time while taking the exams. I have had him for math 266&243 and I wish my major was math to take him again. A+ teacher
Extremely logical, methodical, clear, and tries to make sure that everyone is following what he's teaching. Slight accent, but perfect English. Tests were extremely fair, with representative study guides given out before. And if you're into lanky math nerds, he's pretty cute.
The best teacher i ever had. If you need MAT 211 take him.
Really interesting and funny guy, great at teaching, and the exams are pretty much exactly the same as the practice exams.
Absolutely CANNOT STAND this professor. I have never had a problem with any of my professors except for him. You get marked down for every little mistake, and he is not a good teacher at all. He does not teach, he just blows through the notes and leaves you hanging. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND.
Amazing lecturer. Should be promoted to professor asap. Highly recommended.
Easy. The homework can be really time consuming, but the problems on the tests are much easier than most of the hw. Also, sends you "review" problems that are practically verbatim what is on the test.
Very good teacher, funny, clear, very helpful, had for calc 1 and calc 3 tests are straight forward hw schedule doable fianls were a bit tough
Dr. Boerner is a nice teacher, but really difficult. He grades really strictly on the homework. He has a confusing way of presenting the material. He tries to help students, yet everyone tries to ask him questions during office hours. This course is difficult and he assigns a lot of homework. Not an easy class by any means.
I knew the material pretty well going in, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that I was still learning new things from his lectures. The homework is a beast, but that isn't really avoidable- the only way to get good at math is massive amounts of practice.
He is an amazing professor! I joke around with the friends from that class that I made and say he is "the love of my math life". GREAT TEACHER.
LOVED his class! he explained everything so clearly and if you needed clarification he was happy to do it.He was a laid back professor liked to joke around. If you attend lecture the test should be easy
Definately one of the best instructors I have had at ASU. Made it interesting and understandable for me.
Great professor. You can really tell he know the subject well. Always willing to help. Highly recommended Calculus teacher.
Fairly engaging lecturer. He definitely know his material, so don't be afraid to ask him questions. He's very helpful and has the patience to explain given there's enough time. The tests can be difficult, but he does curve them and there's never anything on them that isn't covered in class.
comes to classes well prepared and knows his stuff. I already knew some of the material going in but I still learned quite a bit. Homework assignments are pretty lengthy but if you put in the time and do them and look at his review sheets before exams you will do well in this class. He also makes a couple occasional funny jokes in his lectures.
SUCH a nice guy. He's a hipster-ish man with a manageable German accent. He knows math quite well, and he structures his lectures extremely logically. He writes tests well and is not afraid to give you "back" points you should have earned, and, at least for Calc III, he curves his tests. Once again, great guy, better teacher than most.
he is awesome :) i liked the class and i think it was the first time i liked math!! he is really nice. his tests are not hard u just need to go over the sample tests. i recommend him to everyone. wish i could take math271 with him. (he doesnt teach it)
He has a huge accent and is kind of hard to understand. He teaches randoms things every week but when you do your homework online, it's not really about that. He does make class somewhat interesting.
Difficult course, but he is a fair grader and will go over anything you need help with if you go to office hours. Really knows what he's talking about and he posts practice exams for every test. Overall a good teacher.
Discrete Math Structures is one of the hardest classes regardless whose your professors. But, Boerner is the EASIEST professor as far as I know. So, if you are not very good at math, try to take him for 243 and as long as you do the homeworks and STUDY for the exams, you should be able to pass the course.
I am not good at Mathematic, I just want to tell you that he taught 2 MAT 272 classes this semester. In total, there are more than 50% of people drop his class. In the rest 50% people, only 40% of them passed this class.
Rochus is an awesome instructor! He makes the material really easy to understand, despite the difficulty of the subject matter. Rochus is hands-down the best math teacher I've ever had. I highly recommend you take from him!
Is an excellent professor and is able to guide the class through even the most difficult of sections. His lectures are incredibly well- prepared, he truly gets how important a solid understanding of the material is and is prepared to answer any questions or clear any confusions. I wish all teachers possessed the powers of Rochus!
Rochus is the best professor I have ever had. Reads the class's mannerisms to make sure everyone understands the material before moving on. Very helpful and is always willing eager to answer questions, also has a delightful German accent.
Awesome teacher! This class is hard regardless. DO homework and READ the text(it's actually good unlike most math texts). Homework from book, webwork extra credit. Has 5 tests and a final which is good in case you do bad on 1 or 2. He is very nice, funny and understanding. Very approachable and enjoys his job. TAKE HIM!
Had this guy for Discrete math and also advanced calc now. As most math people know MAT 371 is not easy class regardless who teaches it and he is definitely harder for 371 then 243. I will say though if you look over the theorems a lot and study for tests you will likely survive though this first couple tests were pretty hard but he eases up later.
He was an excellent teacher and made things really easy to understand, despite the complexity of the material. I would definitely take another class with him.
He is a good teacher, although the material can be difficult to grasp at first. I'd say about 1/3 of the class dropped after the second midterm - not an easy class by any means.
He teaches the material well and knows what he is talking about. However he makes his tests really hard, making it difficult to get a good grade in his class.
Very thorough when teaching the material. Will not gloss over or cut corners which is great. 4 midterm exams and then a final. 80% multiple choice and 20% free response. The multiple choice is all or nothing, but he makes them very similar to homework which helps.
Go to class, take good notes, do homework, go to recitation, study, and you'll do ok in his CALC3. His grade distribution was fearful, 50% was from 3 midterms, which got progressively difficult. 20% was all homework and recitation. 30% was the FINAL exam. So much was riding on the Final Exam. If you don't test well, this may be difficult for you.
if you want to get away with a good grade, by all means stay far away from this teacher. he will kill your GPA. study guides are completly useless. makes test extremely hard, and very harsh on partial credit. Hates to be wrong and when he is he will come up with an explation so he can be right. ill never take this teacher again
I did really well in Calc I,II, and did awful in his class. I found his lectures very hard to follow. I never new which section we were on. He didn't do many examples, focused on concepts. Tests are very hard, multiple choice was tricky. Many of the student in the class were taking it a second time. Id say %60 dropped after midterm. Avoid him.
So fast paced, makes class much harder than it needs to be. Will spend 95% of class time trying to prove the idea and 5% with examples. My notes were almost completely useless because I didn't know what section we were on most of the time. The day before the final he only did two examples to help us, then released us 15 minutes early. Way to go...
Honestly Calc III is just a hard class. He does a very good job of addressing complicated ideas. The practice exams are EXACTLY like the tests so if you study those you'll do fine. The homework helps but don't stress over the hard problems. You definitely need to stay on top of everything from the get go. Overall I really liked his teaching style.
This guy is hilarious. At first, I kind of dreaded the amount of proofs we went over, but it's critical in understanding the material. Don't expect much guidance with Matlab during the labs; he pushes you to figure it out by yourself (which is good if you need matlab in a later course). Overall, he teaches the subject very well and is easy going.
Gave clear examples for problems that are later on the homework. Overall good teacher
He did an awesome job. This material is tough, because more often than not, it is the first time you see it. He kept to the important stuff, rather than teaching directly from the book. Considerate of class' needs and did whatever was necessary to clear up any confusions. Definitely recommend.
He knows his material, though sometimes it would be VERY thorough. We would spend 15-30 minutes covering one derivative, proving exactly how it is true, then we would never use the proof again, only need to know that, YES, it works. Fun guy though.
Don't recommend if you tend struggle with math, even in the slightest. Has an accent- not impossible, but definitely a bit difficult to understand. Teaches somewhat to the students who already "get" math and not really to those who need more guidance.
DON'T TAKE IF YOU TEND TO STRUGGLE WITH MATH! (even in the slightest) Teaches to the kids who already "get" math and not to the kids who need a little more guidance. Highly theoretical course in general and his accent does not make things any easier. Not a bad guy though.
Prof. Boerner is very conceptual, I've already taken Calc in HS, so I would agree that he teaches by assuming you already know basics. I really enjoy him as a person and a teacher. He makes really funny comments and connections to math and develops a deeper level of understanding. TAKE HIS CLASS. **you get the grade YOU EARN. There is NO curves.**
Boerner was probably the best professor I've had thus far in college. He explained all problems clearly and helped me succeed in a class that I had serious trouble with previously. I took this class over the summer, so he moved very quickly and expected that students were present every day.
Oh boy. Dr. Boerner is very passionate, I will give him that. The lectures are not very helpful though. All he does is go over examples, most which are not even on the tests. I would definitely pick a different professor if given the option.
I honestly think he is just a great professor. Tests are easy if you do homework and ain't stupid. :D
Awesome Math Professor! Very knowledgeable and tries to engage the class despite the dry subject matter. Definitely one of the better undergrad Math instructors at ASU.
Professor Boerner knows what he is talking about. However, the tests can be difficult. The tests are composed of true/false, short answers, and two free response questions. The tests are out of 50 points so in order to get an A, students must do well on the tests. The TAs are amazing and I attended help sessions. Online homework are easy grade.
He is an intelligent person, but he should never teach again. He doesn't ever prepare you for what he places on the exams. Expect trick questions about things he has only vaguely mentioned. HW is worthless for preparing for exams, he knows his stuff but unless you have perfect memory don't bother it is worth waiting not to have him.
Professor Boerner definitely knows what he is talking about and he makes it easy for the students to dig deeper into the mathematical concepts behind Differential Equations.
Take him over other Differential Equation teachers. He uses real life examples, will answer questions, and the material covered AND the exams are easier with him over other teachers. I saw my friends exams with another teacher and they were twice as hard. This guy has short, easy tests, the final took a mere 15 minutes out of the 2 hrs alloted.
Boerner was an awesome teacher. Go to lectures and ask him questions in office hours. Extremely helpful and wants you to do well so his tests arent too bad!
Very clear professor, knows the subject very well. He will sometimes skip steps, assuming you already know them, which can be confusing. Enthusiastic about the subject and if asked a question, will clarify and explain. Tests are not too difficult, but study webwork!
he comes to class and expects you to have read the section we are about to do and then just solve a couple of examples on the board. if you want your gpa ruinned you met the right guy
Recommend; he's funny and teaches clearly, which is REALLY important in a logic-based class like Discrete Math. Tests aren't unreasonable at all, they're clearly related to hw and lecture examples.
He's extremely energetic. I took the harder MAT300 class before this and got an A-, so this class is pretty easy as well (Though there is a lot of material that was not covered in 300) It's nice to have a knowledgeable teacher who hasn't lost his enthusiasm for the simpler stuff :)
Absolute waste of time. If you don't understand things, he won't help. He isn't the kind of professor to help you if you're behind but instead wonders why you aren't on the same level as the kids who ace the class. Is not helpful whatsoever. Get ready for your gpa to suffer
I hate this teacher and his style of teaching and assessing grades. For example, in assignments, he gives a very many questions they may have about 50 questions. The other problem is the lack of acceptance of any diffrent way to solve the math question, he just accept his way. Also, he does not know how to divide the grades for each issue.
Class are very interesting and clear, it is easy to do well in this class if you could understand the content well. Also, this professor is quite nice and friendly to students, and also somewhat quite cute.
A funny and enthusiastic professor that makes all this logic/proof stuff very comprehensible. The only downside is that his homework assignments are his way or the highway in terms of point distribution for correct answers. He dedicates a review day for upcoming tests where questions from that day would appear closely in the test. Take him!
If you value your GPA and learning experience, do not take his class. Gives way too many homework assignments, isn't fair in his grading, and you can't use a calculator on exams when he gives you problems so big that you need one in order to be even half right. Wasn't helpful as well. Avoid if possible.
This class required hours upon hours of studying for tests and working on homework. Plan to have the time to devote two weeks to studying for each of his tests.
Out of 55 students going into the class, less than 20 were left at the end of the semester. He does not review for the tests, does not go over graded tests (does post key), very harsh grading on homework, no review material for tests other than an old test from a previous class that he does not give answers for. I got lucky in this class. Avoid!
Dr. Boerner is one of the best math professors I've come across. The homework amount is pretty hefty, but the homework is BY FAR much more difficult than the exams. He's very thorough on explaining new concepts and has a particular flow to his lessons that help make sense of everything. Plus his accent is kind of endearing. Take his class!
Horrible professor. His lectures are very hard to follow. He is definitely a smart guy, just doesn't know how to teach. A lot of ppl in this class did not do well. His tests are tricky and impossible. Reviews don't help.
The exams are way different than what is taught in class. Out of 80 students over 50 dropped or withdrew from the class. Plan to spend 3-5 hours on homework each week.
In class he teaches with interesting examples and topics. He knows alot about how what he teaches relates to computer science. Thats the good, now the bad. His tests are nothing like what he teaches in class, way harder. He makes students do about 40 problems from the book each week, tedious, not very helpful. Hard grader, stay away if you can.
So this is the one of two classes I took for the first time online, and I was stunned at how unhelpful the lectures AND book were for homeworks and tests. I've never read so much and worked so hard for poor grades. All he does is read off of his powerpoints and there are not enough examples given. Save yourself the money and go with someone else.
Terrible teacher, thick German accent to where his lectures are annoying and hard to understand. In his lectures he only goes over proofs and never shows you how to do the homework. If you ask him a question he replys back with a question, theirs no way to get a straight answer. I only passed this class with help from CHEGG.
He just reads his power point and his one example per lecture does not help you with his tests or quizzes. He does not give test prep but he will give you last semesters test to study off of, then he will give you a test that has nothing to do with what you spent all of your time studying. Hard grader, not much help with answering any questions.
Where to start. Don't even bother listening to his power points. I had better luck reading them than listening to them. His written homework and proofs are very difficult and assigns a lot of webwork. Very tough grader. Hard to get clear feedback. Grades based heavily on tests that are very unlike the homework. Begged for useless study guides. Raci
Just don't take this class !!
If you have taken Calc 1 before you may get a C+CC- however you will not get an AB+ guaranteed. No exaggerating. He is a good person and very friendly however he acts as if he wants you to fail. When showing examples he often goes off on a rant about something completely random. His tests are very hard and nothing like you'll ever do in class.
Dr. Boerner's classes are very insightful. His assignments make you think, and that goes for any college mathematics course. The lectures are quite thorough, and while the written assignments are tough, they still apply to the lessons. If you are interested in math, you will enjoy his class.
If you are taking this class be prepared to watch a lot of online lectures. The professor is very knowledgeable but he will only lecture on proofs, and very little time is spent on any examples. Don't rely on tutors. My initial test scores were very low and I use resources like YouTube, MIT open courseware, and Kahn Academy. Good luck.
His tests are completely different from what he explains in class. However, for the final exam you can just review the exams from class, questions in the final are just the same with different numbers. WebWork is pretty difficult. He is funny! If you don't know anything about calculus, I don't recommend him.
ALL HIS EXAMS WERE CONCEPTIONS ! HE IS A VERY TOUGH TEACHER!
Don't even think to take his class
Terrible teacher. He is an engineer hating mathematician. DO NOT take this class especially if it is your first time taking calc he spend more time trying to prove why something is true rather than teaching you how to use it. Terrible teacher who is definitely in the wrong profession.
Super awesome professor!
Good lecturer, finds new ways to explain Calc concepts. Tests can be challenging but not impossible, but if you study his reviews you should be prepared.
Boerner is really great at explaining things. Even though the tests weren't easy, he teaches concepts really well and it was worth it. Take him if you're willing to put in the time!
Very clear grading criteria and easy tests. The final was extremely easy and the lectures were very insightful. Great way to learn Calc I.
Good professor. Clearly knows what he's talking about. Pay attention and you can do well. Tests are really tough but Professor Boerner will review, and will give hints as to what will be asked on the tests. Will give extra credit opportunities if class does poorly on a test. I got a D on the first and third exam and ended the class with a B.
A harsh grader. Half of the possible points on the final exam were on topics that were forced in the last class before the final.
Do not take his classes
He's an OK lecturer. He makes the content seem pretty easy. But then he gives way too much busy-work homework that has little to do with what he teaches andor tests on. You wind up trying to teach yourself the obscure details out of the useless textbook to try to finish the homework. On the tests you loose all points for simple algebra errors.
In class, he only covers the surface of all lessons. I usually always found myself at the tutoring center having the tutors teach me all the things he left out. Most professors have you either do webwork or workbook problems for homework Boerner, howover, makes you complete both. I'm an engineering major and I found that to be very time consuming
This teacher is really really awesome. I am a graduate student majoring in EE. I take this course in Summer Session. I think this is the most helpful class for me in my first year of studying here. By the way, it is super easy to get a full mark in tests, because he will go over the exact questions you will face tomorrow in the exam review class.
Professor Boerner was extremely helpful and graded fairly. I really enjoyed his online class and was even helpful with other concepts outside of that specific classes material. He was quick to respond to email and also used piazza for his online classes which was very helpful.
Extremely hard class. Written HW & Webwork. Brutal tests and grading. His lectures are short and not very helpful (online class, 15-20 min. lectures). Uses Piazza as his primarily tool for communication. He's strict, rude, and difficult. He will help you, but insult you while doing it. Simply: it's f-ing hard. 40+ hrs/week minimum to pass.
Strict grader, lots of topics to master in just 7.5 weeks, unless this is your only class and you don't have anything else to do, just take it during the regular semester. I spent about 20 hours a week studying for this class, and still barely got a C. He did give 20% extra credit questions on the final, but they were just as hard. Good luck.
Professor Boerner is a great teacher! The online session A class was a very fast-paced class, but it was definitely doable. Professor Boerner was always on Piazza answering questions and extremely accessible via email as well. He was very helpful and wanted the students to succeed! Offered a few opportunities for extra credit, but tons of hw.
Boerner is probably one of the best professors I've ever had the pleasure of taking. His lectures are small enough that you feel like you're apart of them and you're learning. He does give a lot of homework though. Along with the Webwork there is written homework. As long as you take a look at the review tests he has posted you will do fine.
Gives so much homework. Tests are hard, but if you study you should be fine. He's always there to help, just ask for it. He's a concept teacher so make sure you understand how to apply the math to everything.
He is very helpful and teaches more than what is needed (i.e. physics applications). He can go over time towards the end of the semester, but its cool. Funny guy. German. But totally comprehensible with an awesome German accent. 10/10 would recommend. Pop quizzes though, so go to class everyday.
Mr. Boerner is really nice. He answers email real quick. I sent him a ton of emails on Sunday just before the finals he answer all of them. He gives alot of hw online but he gives u to the end of the semester to finish them. There's only 3 fair tests u should be good if you study. I lost my note before the 1st test so I got 19/50.
Dr. Boerner was great. He's a really funny guy and has a fun accent. He taught well, so long as you paid attention. The class it tough, but only as tough as any other calc class, and he makes it better. However, he uses both written homework and webwork, where most profs seem to just use webwork. THE TEXTBOOK IS ONLINE AND FREE.
Prof. Boerner is awesome. He teaches you to UNDERSTAND. I took MAT265 with him in my freshmen year and i passed all his tests. He does give a lot of HW and online work. But his exams ar mostly the same as the practice exams.. I highly recommend him.. :)
Had to drop, but he is still a good teacher, best calculus teacher I've had (but that isn't saying much).
He's an okay guy. However, the homework is worth only 10% of your final grade, which is ridiculous considering the sheer amount of it. Always willing to help, and will point you towards questions that will be on the test. He teaches a lot of extraneous information sometimes, and can go a little fast when showing how something works.
You have to put in a lot of time for this class. As difficult as the material was, he made sure you understood it. He goes deep into concepts, and asks for class participation. Learn and UNDERSTAND your theorems, proofs, and definitions and you'll be good. He's also very helpful during office hours.
No doubt one of the worst professors at ASU. However, you could go the whole semester without even so much as speaking to him for MAT142. You can go through the class just working with the IA's and it will be much easier for you. On Thursday lecture days, plug your ears because he will confuse you like no other. You've been warned!
He's a nice guy, but definitely complicates things more than he should. I'd probably just stick with another Professor.
Calculus is hard, and he doesn't verbally provide you with reviews or anything in class. No quizzes but lots and lots of homework. He plays the game very FAIR, so no extra help and grades harshly.
Go to class if you want to do well. Lectures are very boring and confusing. I read the book to help if I was unclear about the lecture which helped. He is funny not because he means to be, but because of just who he is. He helped a lot if you go to his office hours or asked him questions through email or in person. Easy class.
Mr. Boerner is a sporadic and unorganized teacher. His lectures are not clear and just teaches whatever he feels. He also gives a lot of homework consisting of online and written problems from the book. The written problems have to be typed up and take way to long. His tests are fair and he gives reviews for each test.
He's not a bad teacher, he really wants his students to succeed. His lectures aren't the most organized, and he sometimes makes a topic more complicated than it has to be. However, by completing the homework on your own you should be able to pass the class. I made the mistake of relying too much on Wolfram Alpha and SymboLab. DON'T MAKE MY MISTAKE.
He doesn't teach. Clearly extremely intelligent and I can respect that he wants his students to be challenged and work through the problems but when you pay this much for tuition I expect at least the fundamentals of the class to be clearly defined. I learned more from youtube than this professor. Any feedback was less than constructive.
Professor Boerner is the MVP! As long as you go to class and pay attention to the lecture you will do fine in 210. Ask him questions if you are confused! He makes sure that he explains it clearly and if he doesn't he will go over why you are confused and how he did the problem. I wish I could have him for all my Math classes.
When Professor Boerner first warned the class will require 3 to 5 hours study per day I thought it was an inflated threat... it was not. I put in that level of effort, often more, and got an A+. Professor Boerner was very approachable through Piazza and email. He will not give answers away but provides nuanced comments that put you on the correct p
This professor is amazing! He is strict enough to force you to understand material. He will never give away an answer without making you really think about it and assigns difficult homework. Nonetheless, he is very understanding when you have troubles and there's TONS of extra credit! Plus, the difficult homework problems make the tests seem easy!
When he says you have to spend 3-5 hours a day on this class, he is not kidding. This is a very hard class, that's just it. You are going to struggle with his class. However, he is VERY helpful and patient. He will work with you, but he wants you to do your part first. If you don't understand something, you need to do something immediately.
Cool teacher with an German accent, but if u don't know the math aka discrete math its going to be hard for you, very hard for you, seems like an a ok guy but assignments are a beast and im so over this proctored stuff, "friends in other states are asking me you guys still doing that" Good luck
Very caring professor, but MAT 243 is a hard class any way. Tons of credit available for you, if you have the time.
One of the toughest classes EVER! Passionate about his class and the material but he has a thick German accent and he is tough to understand. I bought all the books required then some and hired a tutor that is getting his Ph.D in Math and he said the weekly proofs the professor handed out were "very difficult". Must study at least 2-3 hours DAILY!
Boerner wants people to learn and puts that ahead of making his life easier. He will tirelessly answer questions in an attempt to get you to a place where you understand the subject matter. He does not use small words or reduce an explanation into simpler terms, in his efforts to educate. Student discussions are crucial if you want to succeed.
Boerner is a great professor. Hes funny and cares about his students. He always went out of his way to ask students during lecture if they seem confused.
Professor Boerner was one of the best math professors I've ever had the chance to encounter. He knows what he's doing and cares about his students. He explains everything really well if you make sure to go to class most the time. You should try to go as much as you can, but it is not mandatory. The Matlab portion is annoying but unavoidable.
At first I didn't like how much audience participation he wanted but it helped me pay attention in class. He really cared about teaching us "real" math. Curved. Used examples to prove concepts which were often similar to questions on the test.
Amazing professor! He is very helpful and gives clear expectations and is obviously passionate about math. He explains things very clearly and walks through the material gracefully. Don't let this class scare you, even if you do bad on the homework and tests, you will be pleasantly surprised by your grade at the end of the semester.
do not take his class! spend you too much time everyday. lots of homework and his homework has nothing to with the exam .
This is a very hard class in general and this professor makes the subject very easy to understand. He is German so if you have a hard time understanding foreign professors I would rethink this professor. There is lots of homework and it is graded very heavily. I would recommend taking this class alone or with easy classes.
Rochus is a terrific lecturer. The world is truly a better place with Rochus Boerner in it. Very friendly, has a great personality, is super helpful in person and over email.
Makes the subject easy to understand, and is very clear what material will be on the tests. He is eager to answer any questions you have. There was not too much homework, and his accent is not a hinderance to the class at all. Just show up to class, pay attention, and ask questions when needed and you will pass.
Rochus was born to teach math. Tests are always returned with red paragraphs of feedback, which is so nice. As a lecturer, he's honed his style so that he's as economical with words as possible while also maintaining clarity in discovery, like he's learning along with us rather than condescending to teach us. Spectacular teacher, take him seriously
I struggle a lot with this subject. He is very caring and explains it very well. I didnt like that he grades just on test. There is hw open all semester but it is only worth 5% then the other hw is 15% and as a bad tester I didnt do so great.
No feedback is given on any assignments. Professor states that it would take too long to do for everyone. No working examples are ever provided for any work (homework, quizzes, tests). This is an online class, so I'm not sure where all of his time is going.
He makes it really hard to understand. Just read off of the powerpoint slides like a robot.
This professor is the best math professor I have ever had. His lectures are very informative, and he always provides example videos. The class is tough and you will need to work for the grade, but at least you'll come out with a solid grasp on the topic.
This is a difficult class but by no means impossible. Professor Boerner was very fast in his response time and did his best to help students. People complain about his style because he does not hand you the answer, he forces you to understand the material. The lectures are short and homework is difficult but tests are much easier. Take this class.
He explains things very well and is very helpful on the forums with questions. Lots of people rate him poorly because this class is very difficult. Homework is way more difficult than the tests, but homework is a small % of your total grade, so use them to learn the material. If you can get C-B's on the hw, you are on track to get B-A in the class
Fall 2019 This subject is very hard and if you don't put in work from the get-go you probably won't get the grade you want, this class takes a lot of study time. I ended up dropping this class because the subject is harder taught by him compared to someone like Jeremiah Jones. If you can't understand a slight German accent, don't take him.
Took his class on-line. No one used Piazza. He didn't curve. Homework was 15% of grade. 3 tests, 1 quiz. Final worth 30%.
Heavy workload for a session A/B class. The material can be tricky but very doable as long as you do the homework. No curve but tests are very similar to homework problems. Test questions were more than fair. Professor Boerner is very quick to respond to coursework questions. Put in the time and you will be fine in this class.
I don't recommend taking this course online, or accelerated. Given the circumstances, he was was only somewhat considerate of other people's struggles. I wish he placed more emphasis on the homework in this class, because that's where most of the learning occurs and he assigns a ton of it. Exams did not have a fair point arrangement in my opinion.
Worst math professor I have ever taken. His online class consisted of useless videos that were not even produced by him. Even his "get to know me" video was a video of some other professor! He didn't put effort into the class, was condescending, didn't post homework dates so we accidentally missed an entire module and had to drop to save my GPA
I took this class in the shorter summer session and it was a lot of work, but all of it was super enjoyable. Professor Boerner is extremely active and helpful in the class forums. Normally I skip lectures and just read the text, but his are entertaining and truly helpful. He's also really nice! My favorite professor yet.
Avoid taking this teacher for any class. He took over my class after my previous professor left and did a horrible job. He did not have office hours but would stay after class to answer questions, which he didn't really start doing until a couple weeks in. Teaches at way too of a complex level & is very rude. Tests are way too hard and picky. SUCKS
There's typically a substantial difference between professors who teach online and professors who teach in-person. Boerner lacks the ability to adapt and goes about things his preferred way. Regardless if an exam might have a poor mean, don't get your hopes up for a curve. Plus, Boerner doesn't seem to put much effort forth nor has much empathy.
Made an easy class very difficult to understand. Had my previous professor replaced by him and frankly did a worse job. Tests are heavy and extremely difficult, which require an unnecessarily complex understanding of the topics to get a decent grade. Missing small details is grounds for no credit on some questions. Unpleasant experience overall.
This guy took over my class after my professor left early in the semester. Needless to say the transition from one prof to the next was absolutely terrible. What started off as an easy class quickly turned into hell with him at the wheel. Avoid at all costs.
This online class has to be the worst one I've ever taken. The amount of homework is ridiculous compared to any other MAT class I've taken. Written assignments, Webwork, and quizzes due every single week. On top of that, you have to teach it to yourself with a largely unorganized catalog of video lectures. Save yourself the trouble, don't take it.
This is the worst online class I've ever taken in my life, the exams are ridiculously hard, at least for me. All there is on the exam was theory and no exercise whatsoever. I would never take this class again and I recommend u guys to choose another class.
HORRIBLE PROFESSOR. I was always good at math until I got to his class. I have taken Calculus AB in high school and even with the background knowledge, it was horrendously hard to get an A in his class. His tests were extremely hard and he never curves, even though the class average was a 50%. His concepts are very arbitrary and explained poorly.
I found most of his lectures to be quite boring and overall useless. He goes on long tangents about irrelevant information that won't be on the tests. His exams are mostly conceptual-based so the practice exams he gives out are basically useless. He is fairly cold and does not seem to care about the students.
Run for your lives. 20+ pre-quizzes, then 20+ quizzes per week through MyMathLab and you need at least a 75% score to move on for everything. One chapter quiz took me 7 hours and the other 12 hours. Also, the professor is condescending and doesn't really do anything since lectures are pre-recorded and the whole class is through MyMathLab.
He went on tangents in the lectures that made no sense and the homework was easy, but not helpful at all for the tests which counted for 50% of the grade. The tests were mainly conceptual questions that contradicted each other and not the application of what we were learning. I already took calculus and knew what I was doing, but it was no help.
What a joke. Professor tells you to study one thing and tests on another. He also puts trick questions on exams to see who can figure them out. Never fully answers questions leaving you to teach yourself. If you have a choice, avoid this professor
lectures are always long and contains so much information that you will probably forget. definitely need to practice questions on your own through YouTube or something because the webwork does not help at all, those are just for points. tests have conceptual questions which you could look from the book or online. gotta put in A LOT of effort
Very difficult professor but class is hard anyway. Acts like a hard a but is very kind with extensions and exceptions if contacted, hw is manageable but not helpful, tests are very concept heavy and hard to prepare for, textbook not necessary, lecture not too helpful, tests are difficult but get progressively easier. Good EC
Very smart guy, but not the best at teaching. I took Calc 1 in high school so I knew how to do all the math but unfortunately his tests were basically all conceptual. The lectures were so long, boring and confusing. There's a lot of hwk (which I did all of it) and the class is super test heavy and I am not a test taker so that explains my grade.
Basically your taking the entire course just to take 2 exams which are 50% of your grade. Despite the endless amounts of homework assignments and matlabs you have to complete, it doesn't matter if you fail one of the two exams the class is over for you.
Accelerated online course with lecture videos and follow-along questions that count for 5% of your grade. Lots of webwork hw due every 2 days worth 15% with easyish matlab assignments worth 10%. Two unproctered tests worth 20% and two proctored tests through honorlock worth 50%. First proctored test was harder than the second in my opinion.
This class it tough! Daily webwork homework, weekly written homework, 3 midterms and a finals. Lectures are not great, I had to learn some stuff by myself. Midterms and finals are very fair. There is alot of theory on the exams. A grade of C is from 60% to 69.99%, which is very nice! Overall, stressful experience but could be worse.
The professor maintains minimal contact with students, rarely responds to emails. The course is extremely assignment heavy and contributes to only 5% of the grade and is designed to take up most of your time. The grading is terrible with the midterms taking up to 50% of the grade and no leeway for any late assignments whatsoever.
Only a month in and it's thoroughly horrifying. The amount of weekly, almost daily, homework, webwork and quizzes does not justify the miniscule portion of the grade weightage it covers. A single exam is worth more than all the homework. Professor is condescending and near-unapproachable. This has convinced me to never take an iCourse ever.
1. The concepts are complex, starting off the "learning" process with fear and confusion. 2. If you are good at research you can find sources that explain the same concept 10x better and clearly. 3. The topic is important but the way it is being introduced is not suitable for students with other classes and responsibilities.
Awful experience with this professor. Do NOT enroll in his class. Unfair grading and unresponsive to emails asking for help.
Nice guy, webwork, labs, tests. Tests are similar to homework. Very straightforward
A 60-69.99% is considered a C while 70-79.99% is a C+. 70% of the total grade is 4 exams. 10% is an extremely simple 5 sentence proof "paper." The remaining 20% is evenly spread between written homework, Webwork, practice exams, and quizzes. 4 things due a week but they are worth the least points. Very easy class to pass if you study the day before
The online class is extremely fast paced. 80% of the grade is based on tests. No office hours or help available.
I saw a lot of negative reviews for MAT 243 and wanted to leave this. Dr Boerner is a fantastic professor, and definitely one of the best ones I have had. I'm doing CS and this course reminded me how much I loved my major multiple times. But its a TOUGH class because of ungodly amounts of workload in little time. Anything worth doing is difficult.
Very Little time. HUGE WORKLOAD. Drop all other classes if your taking this icourse.
I thought he was very helpful and his lectures were very intuitive. He also provides more in-depth slides that explain the material better. He is literally always available on the discussion page, use it often because he will explain why your answers are incorrect and help when you struggle. Heavy workload so be prepared to spend a lot of time!
I THINK HIS MAIN PERPOSE OF TEACHING IS TO MAKE STUDNETS HATE MATH OR MAYBE HATE LIVING.
Just a month into the semester and I have done more work in his class than all my other ones combined. If you take this class I can assure your freetime will be all gone.
Really test heavy, u miss one question you are done. Practice tests are nothing like the exam. Exams are very broad and have easily missable questions.
Take the MAT 275 icourse with Dr. Boerner! You get three attempts on each exam and there are 13 points of extra credit on each! The matlab assignments are hard but if you follow instructions they're easy to complete (chatGPT also helps). He is respectful of accommodations and replies quickly. I could not recommend this course and professor more!
Tough class. Huge load of work weakly(quizzes, web & written HW).Video lectures don't cover all slides.Practice exams are very long(up to 66 questions)and must be done the nights before exams. 3 attempts for practice exams, but the average of them will be kept. In questions that say select all that apply every wrong answer cancels a correct one.
Professor Boerner was awesome. He established clear guidelines for the expectations of his class. He incorporates safeguards if one misses assignments due to absence. The weights of assignments in the course gives you a great opportunity to pass the class. I had an issue finals week, and tanked the final, but I still passed the class by 8%.
Horrible professor, too much homework and exams were multiple choice and if you miss two or three questions youre done. class had a lot of work and he gave extra credit through exams and webwork and he doesnt know round up grades at all. i had a 89.66. did not even round it up.
tough grader.
The course is straightforward, but the professor's complex and imaginary rules create unnecessary complications. He responds confrontationally during discussions and emails.
Boerner was awesome when he made his own lectures, the material was super helpful and he clearly explained the concepts. The class is definitely doable, I did ok on most of the tests and bombed the final (i was sick), and I was still able to pass the class with cushion. Everybody says diff eq is the worst, but Boerner made it bearable.
This class is a lot of work but the material is very interesting. Boerner is very quick to respond on discussions and explains concepts clearly. I thought the lectures were great. You will be at a great disadvantage if you lack the time to give this class, this is emphasized in the syllabus. I definitely recommend this class!
Definitely recommend taking this class over an in-person option. Homework is done on jupyter with a clear description of what is required. There are 3 tests that are similar to practice tests he has available on canvas. Extremely doable.
Took online so I did not get to meet him in person. If you are taking this online, tests have 3 attempts per question. Content of homework reflects test. 100% recommend.
Since I took the A session online with him, I did not interact with him much. Overall, it seemed like he definitely cared and was quite active in the course. He and TAs answered questions fast from my point of view, and he was nice in terms of giving extensions. The course was a lot of homework but I believe it was a fair difficulty for diffy q.
Very direct communication style. All lecture videos are "behind the times," ie. white background, monotoned explanations with very few graphics or colors. Content moves quickly.
Not really a great teacher, not really a bad one. He answers questions in the ed discussion pretty often, but all his tests and quizzes are riddled with questions meant to trick you. Be precise in how you answer because he is pretty unforgiving about that. Class moves really fast and he will not slow down for you.
He is a great professor in my experience. He uses ed discussion for class questions; he responds promptly. Everything is through Pearson. He does a reasonable amount of assignments due. The exams (there's 3) are similar to practice quizzes- which is a plus! Loved his class!!!
This course had just an unbelievable amount of coursework. Homework is 5%. Exams are 50%. There is just about an exam every week. After you finish one week, better start the next week because it comes up fast. This course knocked the wind out of me. I was so done by the final. Use the practice tests to study the actual tests.
This is the first professor I've ever had that is so genuinely terrible that I made an account. Completely absent, did not teach anyone anything, no lectures, incredibly impersonal. One of the TAs basically taught the course through discord. No communication at all. Dismissive if e-mailed. Do NOT take his stats class if you have the choice.
By far one of the worst professors I've had. Buy yourself a removable webcam! He'll fail you if he cant see your hands! Forced to retake the class despite earning a B, will NOT be taking it with him again! Impersonable, hard to reach, just terrible.
Took him online. He's a great professor! Sends out reminders about deadlines. His class is manageable. I don't know where the "low" grading is coming from.
Reviews are nothing like the exams he is out to trick you.
Took the class while having a job and it definitely puts you at a disadvantage. I also think the teacher likes to do a lot of trick questions in exams. The teacher is good but the coursework is pretty difficult imho. Be willing to invest some serious time studying for the test, otherwise you might want to drop the class.
Took his A-session diff eq, so it might be my fault, but we had 5 exams in 7 weeks. It's an intensive course, but this drove me absolutely nuts, his recommended min. 2 hours of studying a day was not an exaggeration. He was very active and helpful in the MATLAB ed discussion, but even then, A session was just too much.
