She gave me help when I asked. She's not easy but I learned a lot.

She's cool. She explained everything until we got it and you can ask her questions about your papers or grades. Those that don't like her are probably slackers that didn't like their grade.

She is a very helpful teacher. Her assignments are challenging, but it is worth it.. you learn a lot. Definetely take her class.

she's an okay teacher. grades kind of hard. most of the people in my class, including me, got C's on most of our essays. She gives a lot of homework. A lot of writing in the class.

She's not a bad teacher, her class just had a lot of boring students in it.

Ok teacher! She does expects her students to do thier reading and participate in class. There will be quite a bit of writing. shes is not at scary as she appears to be.

Avila is not bad at all, I beleive if your in her class with your homework done you will ACE her class

Wonderful teacher. Topics are always interesting and she has many teaching activities. Always willing to help students when class is over. Has high standards for her students which help us become stronger thinkers. I strongly recommend this class for open minded people. outstanding teacher!

I took her class during the spring for english 67 and so far I have had no problems concerning her being rude or difficult. Personally I think her class is easy if you pay attention, ask questions when needed and do all the reading. Also ask her for help as much as often.

This is a great teacher. those who rate her negatively are lazy people who want easy grades. I took her for eng 1a and eng 1c. she makes u think and pushes ur mind. If you are a diligent student who does your work, you will enjoy her class, otherwise go find an easy, A-handing teacher. Lets see how much u will learn!

Really good teacher

you will work, and you will learn. stay current on readings and participate in discussions and you will be fine. if you are a slacker, spoiled, lazy child, do not take this prof. one of my all time fav. prof's.

I thought she was a good professor. i hate english i mamaged to pass with a B. she teaches a lot about politics but its all interesting stuff. her class was hard but she helped out with some of the research which made it a LOT easier.

I'm going to be honest. If you're a serious student, you won't have trouble with her class, but if you're a stereotypical community college student and don't plan on changing, then you're probably going to struggle to get even a C in her class. She knows what she's talking about and she teaches well and she simply has higher expectations.

Professor Avila was probably the best professor i have taken at Mt. Sac. I took more from her class than any other class at that school. Her segment on irresponsible advertising was brilliant. The key to her class is to get engaged in it and open your mind; you'll find it surprisingly interesting and fun.

She isnt so easy but cares about her students. She wants them to leave with knowledge and that is evident in her teachings. Going to her office hours to get your papers graded before turning them in helps your grade a lot, and since she requires a rough draft going to her for help is pretty easy. She is one of the best English teachers at Mt. Sac.

Well her material was good for to discuss, its more about analysis of the text. you really have to study for your stuff and do good on your papers, i got lucky i got a C! so i procrastinated a bit but, if you are going to get her, PLEASE STUDY! overall she is great!

She's a pretty tough grader, but I learned a lot in her class. She offered 20 pts of extra credit. Keep yourself organized and you'll be fine. She also encourages participation, so speak up if you can. She wasn't the easiest, but I did end up with an A. But you will have to devote quite a bit of time to her class.

Took her 8-week course this past spring. Course was difficult however I did learn how to properly structure essays and tie-in quotes by the end of my time in the class. If you want to slack, this teacher is not for you. Prof. Avila is also available during office hours so if you are struggling, it is definitely wise to seek her out for advice.

The people who said she is a bad teacher are probably the ones who don't do any work but still expect an A! Prof Avila is a great teacher. She is always is her office during her office hours and was always clear on her instructions and expectations. If you want an easy A then don't take her but if you want to actually learn then take her.

She is a REALLY good teacher. You learn a lot from her class although there is a bit of work involved. I took her 6-week summer class and it was quite rigorous. Do your work and see her during her office hours because she is extremely helpful. Even though it is a lot of work your writing will improve after taking her class.

She is a really nice professor, but her class is a little bit difficult. However, you can learn a lot from her class. My writing skills has improved a lot since I took her class. If you want to pass this class, you should turn in all your work. Also, she has office hours which are really helpful. I recommend taking her class :)!

I don't know why Avila has gotten such bad ratings. I love her! She's the best English teacher I've had. Tough grader, but it pays off because you really learn how to write an essay. Always in her office during office hours to help you. She gets pissed if you're not prepared for class, but that's understandable. Overall just a great teacher :)

Avila's actually pretty awesome. Really cares about students & choses topics relevant to real life. Very difficult so if you want a good challenge that'll make you more knowledgable & inspire you to do better, I recommend her. Keep in mind she encourages you to question things; however, she won't go deep into religion like other prof's do. GREAT!

She's a nice lady, but very difficult and hard. Not an easy A class. She even kicks you out of class if you haven't read the material and do the hw.

I LOVED Professor Avila. I took her Spring '14. She's an extremely tough grader but she's a nice person who really cares about you and wants you to succeed! She's helpful, and clear with what she wants & expects out of her students. Her essay topics were interesting and she really made us think. WORK HARD!

If you ask her for help she is more than willing. There is a lot of work and a lot of reading. She makes you think and provides a lot of feedback. She is funny and has her good moments in class. She doesn't want straight forward answers, she wants you to dig deep, prepare yourself to critically think. Organization is key!

She is one of the teachers I will remember form this college!!! Don't take her class if you are not serious and expect an Easy A. Her class really helped me think critically and pretty much helped me learn to write Essays, which helped me so much in my other Eng. class. I highly recommend Her! You must Do the HW or else you cant attend class.

I really enjoyed taking Avila, she's very helpful and willing to help. People are complaining about how she brings up her ethnicity, but don't seem to realize that that's part of her & A lot of the classes are predominantly Latino andor POC.

Well rounded teacher, and will consistently improve individuals when asked for help. She gives an immense amount of options to seek for extra help, and I had realized how much more it is the responsibility for the students to take advantage of their resources. Keep showing up and ask for help and you'll succeed pretty easily.

Super hard class. Expect to read multiple novels in a semester for her literature class. Lots of homework. Crazy hard exams, study your butt off and memorize all the stuff thrown at you or you won't get an A on the exams because everything is written and no multiple choice. Do all your HW and you should get a B but an A will take some serious time

she is up to date on social issues she wants you to be successful, super helpful If you want your writing challenged take her class

Professor Avila is super cool! We don't read literature in the class; instead, we read articles pertaining to contemporary societal issues. We have awesome class discussions and do really fun activities. She really understands the interests of students. She's very nice and personable! Loving this class so far!

her class ok, but the talking makes it boring. few students fall asleep because of the teaching you have to be serous to pass the class if you didn't do the homework she'll make you do it outside or be dismiss tough grader she is she is nice but really tough! its up to you if you want to take her

Great teacher. At first she looks really hard but that changes. She helps you when ever you need it. Great teacher if you want to be good in your other English classes.

Really cool professor. She will kick you out if you are unprepared for class. After your 4th absence, you will be dropped from the class. A lot of basics are taught (parts of speech, how to properly structure responses and essays, etc..). Gives great feedback on your essays. The only book you need to buy is a novel, which is AWESOME.

tough class. her lectures are amazing. Ive learned so many things in this class that i wouldn't have learned otherwise. she REALLY forces you to think (critical thinking class, duh). she gets lazy sometimes and cancels stuff. textbook is req but she has a copy in the library. gives lots of packets full of articles & essays. must annotate everything

This professor is tough but fair. Be ready to read books are essential although she does give out a lot of hand outs to read. Show up and participate or she will call you out.

I'm an international student and just came to the U.S. a few months when I took her class. My English was not really good, it's a lot of work and the English used in papers was pretty hard and tough for me, but I passed and I've learnt a lot! She's nice and willing to help with your learning. You just need to pay attention and be active.

I really enjoyed Professor Avila! She was strict in the sense of she wanted you to attend class and do the home work assigned. If you do your work and participate it is easy to pass with a good grade. I learnt a lot from her because she chose topics that were very influential and important. My writing skills grew immensely and I would recommend her

there is only one book required after she provides you the worksheets and readings needed, she is a tough grader but she will give you feedback on your work. if you do not attend class then you miss participation and the information she would give which is a lot of good information, i enjoyed the films and readings in her class and learned a lot.

I took Professor Avila for the spring and she is one of my favorite professors so far. If you want to improve your writing skills, take her. She is straight up and will tell you like it is. I would recommend to students who put effort into their work.

One of the best English teachers at Mt. SAC! She really cares about her students and wants them to be successful! She could come off as hot-headed at times but it just because she is so passionate about what she does. Do not take this class if you are not ready to put in the work! Do the readings and the annotations! She really cares about effort!

At first I thought I was not going to make it in her class. However, as the class progressed, I managed to work hard and also the homework was not so difficult. Professor Avila really gives excellent feedback when grading essays which was really helpful for to me. Overall, this class was fantastic. Hang in there if you are going to take English 68.

I want students to know that I highly recommend this Professor. Participation matters because if you don't show up you can't learn anything. She is a tough grader but this is highly beneficial to students that desire to grow their ability to write. Professor Avila has earned my respect, regardless of what the other comments say about her.

Professor Avila is one of my favorite professors. She encouraged me to join the honors program and even gave me a referral! There is a lot of work, but it's an English class, what did you expect? Alot of folks here comment about her political bias, but it's exaggerated. My politics goes against Avila's, and yet I still enjoyed her class.
