good teacher but teaches fast. Make a hundred cricket of life. Exams from notes
too much chapters... . ...tests are not too hard though
he is the funniest teacher and the best economics teacher ever.
Make exams from his notes, not bad overall
Good Teacher
His notes = Tests. Good teacher, detail oriented when marking.
Cancels one test. Nice.
Yawn!!!! This class is boaring, but he tries to make it interesting. He's a little confused sometimes and has lots of mistakes on exams, but he's a fair marker in every sense. Econ is boaring anyways, so you may as well take him.
Great guy, you can only get extra help with him over the phone tho! He can explain econ concepts really well, so u understand, tries to make it interesting, and the written section of his exams are right from the notes, which helps. He also omits one test
he is a good guy..I got very high mark in his class. I am going to take ECON 150 in his class again. He is good!!
Very very good
u better understsand his "writting' otherwise u dont know wut to study for da exam.
His class's quiet boring. BUT I love his personality. He reminds me my granddad ^^. anyhow, u'll enjoy his class.
funny guy
The most interesting part in a dull machine. Economics is dull, but Prof Midgley does his part to liven things up. highly recommended.
NOT A BAD TEACHER AT ALL. ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS PUT A LOT OF TIME IN THE COURSE COZ IT APPRARS TO BE EASY, YET IT'S TRICKY AND CONFUSING.
Friendly teacher but his exam questions seem easy but turn out..NOT EASY! You neither get or not get! There isn't any such thing 1/2 and 1/2 answer. Too much stuff to learn in Econ 150..never take Econ :(((
very nice guy.. he tries to make econ understandable & interesting.. his exams are multiple choice & essays.. his multiple choice is so hard & confusing, though essay is pretty easy since it mostly come from his notes.. anywayz, his writing is hard to read lol.. but u'll get used to it :P
he's boring *yawn* his writing is hard to understand, and he's all over the place when teaching. and his tests arent exactly easy..but i guess it's good that u get to omit one test..but still..*yawn*
Super nice guy but when it comes to teaching I wouldn't recomend him his note are all over the place and when you ask him a question he goes on a 15 min tangent and you become even more confused. Sure his notes make sense....if you've already read the text book..(he drops lowest test tho)
Hes a really nice guy. Offers help. Gud notes. clear. Tests are from notes, if wanting more detail read text. great class and teacher
I droped his class.....his hand writing is hard to understand, talk to much..(Dont ask hime a question..he will anwser it for 20 min) but very nice guy. if you love econ, take his class.
very nice guy, but his class is very difficult to understand, his test is very hard and confuse. nobody can understand his talking and handwrting, his lecture is not logic, so suggest you do not take his class.
If you have to taking econ, take it with him! He's an amazing professor. Loves what he does!! If you don't understand everything, he WILL inspire you to learn it on you own. Trust me. Whatever little motivation i had for the challenging course, he somehow multiplied it tenfold!Professor & lifecouch!
he speaks unclear, notes are disorders.but he is very helpful.
UM...Rod is very good..he teached carefully and clearly... and.. I can see that he has tried his best in teaching~
he is so damn bad!!!!!!! i'm gonna fail!~ frick!
His material is hard, but that's yr reasponsibility to study with it. Notes is so helpful, all of his essay questions is from his notes. And he is SO nice, while final exam u can go ask him how to do a question INDIRECTLY, and u will give u the answer INDIRECTLY as well. Also, he is so willing to help u get over the course if u study hard.
good teacher indeed, just may have difficulty in explaining due to the messy econ concepts. i will say Rod, you good!
I cant read his writing at all. Nice guy, but should be an economist or something, not a teacher. His class is purely taking notes and doing a total of 3 tests and a final. Barely making it through his class!
I love Rod! He tries to make everyone interested in a topic that's quite dry, to say the least. I don't understand what everyone else on here is complaining about, but I loved his teaching style. Yes, he got too excited at times, & his notes would be a bit 'discombobulated', but all-in-all he was great, a fair marker & such an understanding person
God.I love Rod.I wish I could take his 1250 too,but it's not offered this semester. Thanks to him,i got A.Just recopy his notes 2-3 times while thinking and you will do good. Now im stuck with this Indian old guy whose teaching is ok,but super hard tests...Rod's test are all good.
He doesn't assign any homework so you dont get any practice for the tests. You can't even do the questions in the book because there is no answer key (Unless you can buy one somewhere). I had the opportunity to look at several of my class mates tests and they were all in the 50 to 60% range. Maybe some ppl are doing good, but they are very few.
Not a bad lecturer, but the questions on his tests don't really line up too well with what he's teaching. Doesn't let you keep the tests either, and his notes are really messy.
This teacher is just bad. He teaches one thing and tests you on something else. Almost like someone else is making his tests. He gives u no assignments so u don't know what the tests will look like. His notes are messy and disorganized and he comes late to class frequently.
he is nice. his class is fun. term tests are ok and based on what he has taught but final is a little bit harder. his notes are very helpful, so if u take good notes you will get good mark.
Nice guy, honest teacher... but is not very clear. He is a great person and will help you with any questions but the way he explains is only understood by him.
Rod has a passion for economics and he tries his best to make dull material interesting. His notes were pretty random, if you arrive 5 minutes late you'll have no idea what is happening at first. I'd definately recommend him.
He teaches his notes well but is very messy but will repeate anything you ask. His tests are based on his notes the written questions are strictly from notes which he goes over.
He's so funny! He always has great stories to tell the class and he made me not miss a single class!
heis a really nice teacher but his exames were very difficult, i studids quite a bit for the final, and i still diddn't do well because it seemed like his exame was ment to fail us. i would recommend taking this course but not with him, unless you want a grade lower than what you deserve
I enjoyed his class. The material is not very difficult, but you have to understand the concepts, not just memorize them, in order to do well. I got a B-, but by no fault of his. I didn't prepare for the final as well as I should have. He's very kind, patient and good at explaining the concept. Will not make you feel bad for asking questions.
can't read his writing and his jokes are not even that funny. Take him if u want to read his jibberish on the board.
This class was boring!!! Rod is a really nice guy, but the whole class got maybe 50% on his tests. All of the marks were super low. If you dont understand economics, be prepared to take this class a couple of times.
soooooooo hard. his test are just ugh i dont know. his short answers are straight off his notes. almost word for word. so if you study the notes over and over theres no reason you can do bad on that part. BUT his multiple choice is crazy, answers are sooo similar its hard to get it correct. apparently he takes it out of a instructor manual. well GL
good teacher
I learned a lot in this class. All of the theories were interesting. The class involves a lot of reading and taking notes, so if you don't have the patience, I suggest not taking Econ at all! Other than his messy handwriting, Midgley is a good teacher. And be glad youre taking the course at Douglas cause the equivalent at SFU involves a lot of math
Nice guy and always accessible for help. The class is not as hard as people said as long as you pay attention in class. The notes are extremely helpful and the exams are not that difficult. Although the MCs are a bit challenging compared to short answer questions, it's possible to have full mark from MC if you read thru the notes and understand it
Multiple Choice Questions are from "myEconlab" that comes with the text. I studyed those and did very well on MC. He sometimes used the EXACT question on the practice questions on myeconlab.
Awesome and helpful teacher!
Rod is awesome and hilarious. He is a bit all over the place but he knows his stuff and will gladly explain it to you if you don't understand it. Recommended for econ.
he put a lot of effort trying to make us like macroeconomy. he tries to relate all the current issues into our class. his class is okay. however, his notes is quite confusing sometimes, u really hv da spend time understand the materials. n i found the final exam is pretty hard too, he is kinda a harsh marker.
I'm not sure if he's retired, but if he was retiring that semester I am very lucky to have taken his class before he retired. He is an amazing instructor who is very enthusiastic about economics. Tests can be very difficult and attention to detail is required, but he believes in improving students and making us raise our expectations.
Very disorganized and his notes seem very random. Very interesting and good teacher. Tests are very easy (course is only tests). You really need to read the textbook however, and I'd highly recommend taking Micro first (he jumps right into concepts you should already know). Left wing in his economic views, so watch out for bias.
He tries to interest you in the macroeconomy, but it can be pretty hard to be interested in it at all. Taking notes is almost all you do every class, and even then, it can be difficult to understand what you have just written on your paper. No homework, grade is based on 3 tests and a final, but he will omit one test if you really bombed. Nice guy.
Enthusiastic guy but this course is definitely difficult. Make sure you do the readings and if your text comes with MyEconLab, use it! It is easy to get lost in the lecture. Make sure you practice drawing and interpreting graphs. There are 3 term tests, 1 final, no HW and he omits one term test if you do really bad on it. Study study study!
Don't take his course if you are not ready to study extremely hard
Rod is a passionate professor who wants his students to succeed in economics! Don't expect the class to be easy if you're not going to make an effort; read the textbook thoroughly and understand the concepts well! I recommend buying the study guide. Ask questions, do the work, and you'll do well! I ended up with an A+! :)
Economics is already hard, Rod is a nice guy but very messy and his grammar is poor. It is very easy to get confused during his lectures. The secret to pass his class is to read each chapter 5 times, until you understand. Gotta know all the concepts. He expects you to apply the concepts, so read it and study hard.
Rod is the most interesting lecturer i ever had. Although his teaching technique is so confusing and disorganized, his quizzes and final exam are so predictable. He has plenty of knowledge and he is very flexible in time and answers. You don't have to organize your answers in quizzes and exam.
best prof i've ever had. makes you work but if you study he has no problem giving you an A or A+. i look up to this guy a lot would recommend to anyone for 1101, 1150 or 1250.
His hand writing is horrible. He does this magic that makes everybody to fall asleep. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM SO BAD JUST SO BAD
Rod is a great professor and Douglas College is very lucky to have him, I only wish he taught at SFU so I could take more courses with him. He is very passionate about the subject and does his best to ignite your own passion in the subject. Nothing but respect for this prof and highly recommend to anyone willing to work hard while learning alot!
Took a class with him because it was the only one that fit into my schedule, and I would not recommend. He is a well-meaning professor, but his lectures are dry and hard to understand, and the multiple choice sections on his exams usually have little to do with what was taught in class. I honestly regret taking this course, avoid this prof!
too hard for pass this course. Macro enco was hard, but this teacher make it harder.
He means well. He is truly enthusiastic and is invested in his students well fare. But the reason i dropped his class is because he does not give any assignments, practice or h.w so we are completely clueless as to what the mid terms could possibly be like.
Do you guy have to do presentations in his class? can any body tell me about the test and assignment? thank you guys!
He's a good teacher, but boring at times. Overall, he'll take the time to help his students understand the course material and is very patient.
He is a very knowledgable teacher. If you know a little bit of economics and enjoy it, you are going to like his classes. He has many examples to share. He is lovely and funny. He is always willing to help the students. I would recommend him if you like economics. The bad point about his classes, sometimes it can be hard to follow with his notes.
I came into the class thinking of how hard this prof would be, but honestly, I found him to be one of the best profs at Douglas College. He really makes economics quite interesting, and has inspired me to take further economics as electives down the road. I worked really hard to get A's on his exams but it was all worth it.
Long lectures. 3 MT(20% each) & final. Multiple choice questions & cases. No handouts, no assignments, no quizzes, no presentation. Funny & very well meaning prof. I wish he could spend more time on exercises in class. Students have to copy what he writes & you can't focus on explanation when you have to make sure that you copy all the information
I took this course a year ago and didn't do too well so I decided to retake the course with the Rod again. I like the style where there is no homework but 3 term test and a final. One of the lowest term test will be dropped which is really helpful. There will be 4 sq in every term test and we are allowed to choose only 2 to answer.
His notes are all over the place and his lectures dont seem to have anything to do with the tests. He is also a very tough marker when it comes to short answers. He is a great guy, very passionate about teaching economics but if you wanna take economics definitely take someone else.
He is not the best prof but neither the worst. Most students told me it was hard to follow his class, and sts' average mark was pretty low. I think it really depends on person. whatever, I am taking his course for next sem again and if you don't usually review things and not a hardworking student, just don't take it
One of the best classes I have ever had. Be prepared to work hard and results will be rewarding
He really cares and is ready to help. He makes sure you understand a subject then moves to the next topic. This is a heavy subject and you have to work hard for it but he certainly makes it easier.
Exams have nothing to do with class notes. mcq seems cousins and tricky. Nice to help students even answer on weekends but average class is very low
It is really important you read the textbook for this course. His lectures are very interesting but his handwriting is sometimes hard to read and contains a lot of abbreviated terms. If you can spend enough time for this course, go for it. (I couldn't!) Tips: read the textbook for MCQs, and review diagrams, which are explained in class, for FRQs.
Worst Instructor ever
Grades are from only tests which are based off lecture and textbook information, he's not the worst teacher but very old school, you write down what he says. I personally need a power point or to be given homework to study so did not do well in his class since i had a hard time understanding lecture at times.
Great prof, motivational, simplistic in expectations Caring, Funny, uses humor appropriately, extremely easy to contact outside of class listen carefully in lectures, he goes over everything he tests on, but it is easy to lose focus and fall behind
Favourite prof I had at Douglas college. Extremely knowledgeable and insightful. Wouldnt recommend his class for someone who does not have a personal interest in business/economics however.
Effective lectures and tough but fair. If taking micro: Go to each class and take exact notes, read the text before class, do practice problems/re-writing notes for the exams. Questions are similar to lecture. If you slack off he will fail you, but if you try then you can pass. Overall, he makes the subject interesting, but makes you work.
Decent professor. Extremely knowledgeable but tough grader. Might take again out of necessity not choice.
No assignment or quiz just 3 term test and 1 final out of which he marks the best 2 term tests. If you miss a test you can give that again. Exams are based on notes.
Rod is very difficult. There are 3 tests (20%) hell take the top two (25% each) or all three depending on which works better for your grade. If two, final will be 50% or 40% if used all three. It is lecture heavy with a lot of note taking. Make sure you read the text as a supplement. Put in a lot of work and youll do well.
d0nt take his class just don't !
the worst prof eveeeeeeerrrrr! don't take his class! he is so unorganized didn't post any power point through the term ! he acts like he doesn't know how to work with computer and don't know online classes if you don't know how to teach online then don't ! don't waste our time and money !
he its the worst for online classes you'll get lost all I did was watch YouTube and khan academy to teach my self ! he is so lost and doesn't know how to teach online ! avoid him
No feedback whatsoever. No guidelines for studying. Useless lectures. He is a nice person but awful as a professor. Tests are way too long for the time given.
please for the love of god do not take this prof. he kinda knows what he is doing but has no clue how to articulate it properly to students. his tests are outrageously difficult as you never have a clue as to what is going to be on it. seriously do not take this prof unless you want to get a bad grade or not learn much.
His note is a mess. His explanation of a subject matter often confusing! You learn with extra time and efforts but with poor result.
He doesn't mark anything besides tests, very unclear and gets lost and doesn't understand what he is saying himself. When he goes over material for tests he is very unclear and when u ask him questions he gives hard to understand answers and he doesn't answer emails.
the reason I am not giving Rod a 1 star is that he is a very nice prof. But he is too old, he doesn't have any slides and posts nothing on Blackboard. He went off syllables a lot. In my class we are expected to do one unit a week (we did not) on the last class we went through 3 units and they were all on the final exam. DON'T TAKE THIS COURSE.
There are 3 tests (20%)+ final. Make sure you read the text as a supplement. Copy note by note and memorize. Put in a lot of work and youll do well. Rod is accesible outside of class.
My favorite prof so far. There's 4 assessments in total 3 Term Test 20% each (20 multiple choice and 2 written questions) 1 Final 40% (50 multiple choice and 4 written questions) For the multiple choice just read the textbook and you will be good to do it For the written questions will 100% be covered in the lecture
Just show up to your lectures and take notes, you will be good on the term tests I like him as a person, but he talks about irrelevant topics which make the class a little boring, otherwise i would take this guy
The best guy for the job
He's like the best prof for econ highly recommend
I do not recommend anyone taking Rod Midgley. The lectures were very boring and not interesting. The multiple choice questions were very difficult, some of the topics related to them weren't (or were very briefly) covered in class or the textbook. He graded the short answer questions strictly, often without explanations or feedback. Please avoid.
Rod is a really nice person, but isn't good with tech whatsoever and never posted a single grade online, or any notes online. Expects you to read a TON from the textbook which makes it hard to understand what's important for exams and what isn't. Overall a really nice individual, but my honest opinion would be to take it with someone else.
This class was the worst experience I've had at Douglas College! He's done! His methods are prehistoric! He's an 81-year-old "professor" trying to teach with just a pen and a piece of paper in the 21st century! No homework, no classwork, no projects, no ppt slides. It's just him drawing graphs for 3 hours and giving the most confusing lectures ever
He was an awesome teacher. People say that his stories are like, signs of his old age or something, I say that they make the class interesting - and they had lessons in them too. One thing I didn't like was that there wasn't any homework to help us get this stuff in our heads. We only had the lectures, our notes, and the textbook. So that was tough
Worst teacher! Barely taught us anything. He said not to study monopoly as this would not be tested on - Final exam included lots on this subject. I know more about his son that Micro. Calls students out on being stupid. Never told us our grades. No help whatsoever. No practice tests, no homework, nothing uploaded to blackboard. AVOID AVOID AVOID.
Professor Midgley's lectures were dry, and he seemed disorganized, especially with online classes. unstuck ai and other resources helped me grasp the material better. Overall, I'd avoid this class if possible.
Lectures are confusing and disorganized as he refuses to use technology. If you ask more than 2 questions in a row he gets irritated. Gives only an hour for very comprehensive tests then lectures after. Worst test grade I've ever received in all of my history of schooling. Couldn't drop because of my requirements. Would if I could though.
The professor in his 80s is kind. There are no formal lecture materials provided. During the three-hour class, he writes everything by hand in capital letters from beginning to end and shows it to the class. It also seems that multiple-choice questions may be generated using ChatGPT. Recently, out of 20 questions, three were identical...
His style is out of the ordinary and not that organized. We are using the 17th edition but the powerpoint slides available in blackboard is for the 16th edition where the chapters are arranged differently. I hope that on his next classes, he will be able to conduct a knowledge check through simple tests and provide more visual presentation.
