I'd recommend him, he gets to the point.
Rod is a great guy. I really loved taking his class.
Nice guy. Read book instead of going to boring lectures
great guy, very understanding about abcences
BORING LECTURES!
skip lectures - they are from the book, just get notes from computer
nice guy...very helpful...skip lectures-very boring-straight from book
Lectures=sleep. Straight from book. He's a nice guy and very helpful.
Power Point!! sums it all up>> skip lectures!! easy tests and HW!
This was an easy class and Rodd was always really helpful and understanding!
Easy tests and homeworks, lectures are a drag.
Was really helpful and clear about things. Go to lectures, they arent that long
Wonderful man, easy class, cool about attendance, makes corney jokes...take him
very understandable, class was not that hard
i honestly dreaded this class. it was boring and the tests were so crappy. hated it
Lecture is boring.....Lab is okay if you don't ask him any questions...he's not very flexible with homework details and makes class harder than it really is.
Easy class, good teacher, Nuff said.
Good teacher better with power point lectures.
Hes a very nice guy .... but the class is very stupid and very easy, no teacher is needed for this class, but he did an ok job.
Not very helpful...too many assignments.....no point in showing up for lectures but attendence doesnt matter so its fine to skip.
I love this prof. He is very helpful and can clarify any confusions you might run into. Very willing to help you after class. Awesome Prof! Take him before you leave GVSU.
Very cool...take him if you can!
Horrible Prof don't take him. He does not help at all and gets upset when you ask questions. He SUCKS!!!!!!!!
Rod was alright. Seemed like a goof...but genuinely wanted to know what can make the class better. Uses book's PP notes to lecture. No study guide for the two (HUGE) book tests. Helpful, but in an intimidating way. I didn't always go to class, but still did well. He's a good guy.
I hated this class more than anything. I did not want to attend at all. He is a boring teacher. A nice guy, but not a helpful one. Whenever I would have problems on my computer, he would tell me to redo it. I dont really care for him or his class.
Rodd was alright. He was good at explaining things and he knew that not everyone was into computers as much as him. In lab he wasn't very helpful, which is where most students needed help. Lecture was stupid and pointless.
Great prof. and very nice guy. Call him Rodd! There was homework each week, and tests seemed frequent, but they were fairly easy. If you are taking this class for gen. ed., you will enjoy it much more with Rodd!
This class is going to be BORING no matter which prof you take. Most likely you will know everything that they attempt to shove down your throat for the million and first time. Rodd knows it though and he make it simple to accomplish the gen ed no prob. Very clear make sure you attend lab.
He is an alright prof. I didn't like the lab assignments though- there was no teaching us what to do for the assignments that were due. Lots of people had questions. Since he didn't teach anything during lab, the day the assignment was due, he would spend lecture going over it, detail for detail, which got a bit boring if you knew most stuff. Needs improvement.
The class is boring no matter what, so take Rodd cuz he realizes it is boring. Tests aren't hard as long as you study for 5 minutes.
Boring!! He posts all of his notes on the campus computers and he only goes through them. Lab is a learning resource towards the end of the semester, but the beginnign focuses on stuff we have already learned about (ie. Word and Excel). Overall, good prof in you can get past the boring lectures.
Rodd is a great guy. He realizes the class is boring. He's flexible and an easy grader. Attendance isnt mandatory and lecture is all on school computers. Take Rodd!
Rodd is a great guy, the class is so boring though. Make sure you go to lab and do your work, and you'll be fine. This class will be boring no matter who teaches it, Rodd is a good guy though.
Rodd is there to help out anyone that needs it, he takes the time to go over material for those who don't understand. Class is boring & Rodd knows it, so he tries his best to keep it interesting. Great Prof!
RODD IS AWESOME!!!! He's so helpful when I didn't understand how to use a computer. He will help you learn anything you would like, even rocket science. Tell him to hold a dance party for your class. He's a great dancer!
AWESOME!!! Probally one of the best profs at GV. He is a really nice guy, and very helpful. Hes pretty entertaining, he knows the class is boring, so he tries to make it bearable. Take him at ALL costs. again AWESOME
Rodd is a great instructor (and has mad drawing skills). Will help with any problem. But we never did have that dance party! One of the best instructors at GVSU.
This class was super easy - I was in high school when I took it and got an A. He is funny, I much preferred the lab time to the class time because the Powerpoints were boring and turns out I don't care about a lot of computer science. He is pretty funny though, he hates Nickelback... I love them. He keeps the class engaged. Highly recommend.
Rodd is a great guy! He loves to teach this subject, and he is so nice to all the students. You will love him! The class is super easy and if you print the powerpoints and go to lab then you will get a good grade.
RODD IS AWESOME! He's really funny and knows his stuff.Go to lab and try to attend class because he sometimes gives surprise quizzes. The tests are super easy!
Rodd's a good guy who knows his stuff. Not much help outside of class. Lectures were a complete waste of time, but overall CS150 is a joke. If you know anything about computers take Rodd, skip lectures, always go to labs.
Great guy. Super nice, friendly. lectures are boring but the labs are mandatory, not too hard of a class. tests are easy
One of the coolest teachers at grand valley. Easy course too
Easy class for the most part; labs are mandatory. Lectures are quite boring. Watch out for out of class help. -Horrible at replying to emails.
His class was fine- some of the assignments were unclear or confusing, then if you get stuck it's hard to find out where to ask for help- still a good teacher, i would take him. all you need is the huge lab book and it sucks you can't return it since you need the code
nice guy...terrible teacher...does not really give any help, does not post grades timely or return stuff so you do not know how you did. I would not reccommend taking this class if you are not comfortable with computers.
very helpful
Doesn't teach anything having to do with the programs you learn. you're basically expected to know it already. he is not very helpful and will NOT work with you on grades and doesn't care if the computer has a problem
lecture you dont really need to go, there are slides you can print off and he just reads off of those.. lab you must go you get 5 pts for being there. there is no study guide. 2 exams. for lecture. and for lecture you have to learn about word, excel, access, and do grader projects, quizes
You have to attend labs. You don't have to attend Lecture, except he does give a pop quiz..and does give extra credit. He is a very nice professor that cares about you and your grade, if you yourself care. If you go to his office hours, he's more than willing to help. He's lenient if you have issues, so just ask. Very nice guy.
Extremely knowledgable about computers and technology. He definitely makes you feel more comfortable about using computers if it is not your strong side. Lectures are not mandatory but recommended; go to lab because you will do a majority of your homework in the lab and it is the time to ask questions about the material. Exams are not too hard.
It was his first time teaching this course and he went a little overboard with the load. Very knowledgeable but required a lot of homework and projects on top of reading because he flew through the slides. Overall not bad.
I thought he was pkay at first but I ended up dropping his class because I thought I was doing all the work when I guess he wasnt. I didnt know this becuase he didnt post any grades until the week of midterms so i found out i was failing. I talked to him about it but he was not understanding at all. The workload is really heavy and he is unclear.
Seems a little like he's getting sick of teacher. Terrible at responding to e-mails. Work load is HEAVY in this class. Make sure you understand what to do with all the online homework in the beginning because it comes at you fast. None of the lectures are about Excel or Access which is what your homework points are based on -better know 'em already
Great professor! Very helpful and willing to go the extra mile until you understand the material.
Rodd is a super friendly and helpful guy. He will do everything he can to help you understand the material. If you are not interested in computers the lectures are kinda boring. The computer work is basically easy until you get to the Access chapter. The midterm and final are rough but all the other quizzes are online and easy.
Really nice guy, very knowledgeable with what he's teaching. class was hard, but not unbearable until the Access chapter. i asked him for help and he told me to just "look in the book" and wasn't really helpful. knows his stuff, but isn't super willing to help outside of class/after class
He knew his stuff and was always clear about assignments. The lab work was bearable and he answered your questions, even though he seemed annoyed. The lectures were boring and the lecture exams were hard. He never told you what was on them or what to study. Overall, you can get a decent grade with the lab work.
Rodd is one of my favorite profs at GV, super nice guy and always willing to help you out. The class wasn't that hard but there is a fair amount of busy work in lab. Overall a great class and an awesome teacher, would choose him again gladly.
Rodd was a cool guy. Lectures weren't bad at all. Lecture was the easy part, lab sucked. Lot's of work, we had a textbook assignment and 2 online assignments each week. It's not that the material is hard, it was just time consuming. In lab Rodd would TELL you what to do, rather than TEACH, and I got confused at times. Learned a good amount though.
Boring class but nice and easy going professor. Has fun with the class and jokes around. Clear on instructions and lets you turn in work a few days late for full credit. Would definitely recommend him.
Prof Lowell did not explain the web page project well compared to what others have told me about other professors. Other than that, his lectures are good and it is not difficult to get a good grade and learn a lot in his class
Rodd is a good guy and will help you out if you are willing to go to class each day. He is up to date with the latest technology and explains the aspects of computers in a really cool way. I enjoy having him as a prof! I would definitely take him again.
He has a lot of passion for his field and is knowledge of all the new technology. The class felt more tedious to me than anything, but that's probably because I had already taken more advanced courses. He usually will just tell you to review the book if you have any questions, but the class is unbelievable basic so it's not a problem.
Lowell was an awesome professor. He got confusing at times and the midterm was pretty tough but he is good at making himself available to get help. I would recommend taking him over any other professor for this course.
This class is mostly tutorials from the book every week. But I really like Rodd. He's definitely the best CIS teacher I've had at GV. He's a super nice guy, and is more than happy to help and answer any questions. I wish he could've taught all of the other classes for my CIS minor!
He is a good professor! I would take a class with him again. If you are somewhere between average and below with computers like me, you have to ask him a lot of questions. It wasn't hard, but it takes up a lot of time with projects and lab assignments. He's midterm and final are not the easiest.
Rodd is a great professor! He's super passionate about CIS and is really helpful. Super easy class just a lot of busy work. Make sure you go to the labs, but you can get away with skipping lectures
Mandatory labs result in a few projects and mini-test things every week, so expect to shell out a few hours on those. If you don't attend the Lab he takes off points. The lecture is pretty basic computer knowledge. I didn't go to half of them.
Professor Lowell is a great professor, the class is a lot of homework but it is easy, just time consuming. A few online quizzes and two exams, not much studying needed to do well. Must attend labs but lectures can be skipped. I would definitely recommend taking CIS 150 with prof Lowell.
Super nice and funny, but gets frustrated really quickly. I was very afraid to ask questions (he'd get fussy). I wish I would've known it requires 4+ hrs/week outside of class- attendance at lab is mandatory for points. Not required to go to lectures, but the exams/quizzes are pretty hard. Not good with email or blackboard.
I enjoyed taking CIS 150 with Rodd. He's very knowledge on computers and brings in computer parts to classes. Approximatively 4 hours of homework, very easy just time consuming. Lecture is not mandatory but lab is for points. I recommend this class.
Prof Lowell is an amazing guy and his lectures are kinda boring but he tries to make them interesting. The lab work is honestly a lot so make sure to plan time outside of class to complete it. Every week you have a textbook project, a quiz, quiz review and another project that is due the following week. His exams are pretty easy
Rodd is a cool guy and he really knows his stuff. The class was however, difficult. each week you have two or three homework assignments that take a good amount of time to be completed, so there is definitely a need to plan about 4-6 hours of homework just for this class. But Rodd is very helpful if you have questions and tries to make class fun.
Rodd is definitely one of the best CIS 150 teachers. He tries to make his lectures interesting, even though material is boring. Labs are mandatory for points. There is work to do outside of class; it's pretty easy just time consuming. Lecture is not mandatory, but just go because his exams are made from the lecture, not the book. 10/10 recommend
Rodd makes the class very easy to pass. If you regularly come to class and participate, he is eager to help (I slept through an exam and he let me retake it). Attendance to the lectures are not really mandatory, but they helped me with the class. There's lots of material, but most of the class is not cumulative so it's easy to learn.
Professor Lowell is a solid choice for CIS 162. He makes himself very available outside of class, and is always willing to help. He's not the most knowledgeable professor in the program, but he will absolutely bend over backwards to help you. He literally replied to my emails 10 times on Easter Sunday. In the space of like 2 hours. He's great.
I love Prof Lowell -I went into his class hating programming because of a bad high school teacher - and came out of it deciding to major in CIS. In this class you actually learn the material - not just absorb and spit out information. You need to attend class to understand material obviously, but if you do and pay attention you will succeed
I really liked Professor Lowell. Class is basically mandatory if you want to pass, but I looked forward to it. He gives a pretty routine schedule each week, with a few projects thrown in here and there. He is super nice and makes class enjoyable. The only downside is that he's a tough grader and some projects/assignments were not explained well.
Professor Rodd Lowell is a baller. He's the real McCoy and doesn't let you forget it. His lectures are engaging, his stories are entertaining, and his pools or knowledge are vast. If you do not love this man, it is because you do not love yourself and you should reevaluate your priorities.
hes was one of those professors who knows his stuff but isnt condesending about it. Hes funny and relatable, doesnt give out crap tons of homework, and really the only thing you have to show up for is the labs because he lectures out of the book (not in the direct sense). Probably opened the book 10 times this semester and Im passing the course.
Great professor! Very passionate about teaching the subject at hand. He is outgoing, funny, explains things very well, responds to emails very quickly, and makes the class interesting.
Computer programming classes are typically not easy. Lowell is a great guy and does a good job making the concepts easily understandable. Lowell was available in the success center and via email if you had questions regarding a project. Attendance for the lab portion was mandatory and for points.
Worst professor to have... EVER. Labs? Good luck, the instructions given are NOT clear which also follows his unclear feedback which is also NOT accurate. For coding, your program may work but if not his way you'll be lucky with a D
One of the best GV professors! He takes attendance, but lectures are so helpful so go to class. He answers emails quickly and consistently. Don't take the textbook for granted! He also gives page numbers when helpful, so make sure you use them. Dr. Lowell tells you how to succeed in his class, so listen to him and you will learn a lot and get an A.
I had prof Lowell for 260 and overall he was good. Attendance is taken and lecture is usually very helpful, lab basically reflects everything in lecture with one challenge you have to figure out yourself. The book was pretty useless, I opened it once or twice the semester and was still able to do perfectly fine.
In class on week 7 he just started grading things. There was even a group email of all the students in his class talking about how he wasn't doing his job. He rarely gave feedback and doesn't have a rubric so as he grades so he starts marking down points and can go from a fully working code & half credit due to little things considered 'bad prog.'
bad just bad, don't do it
This is the worst professor I've ever had. Wouldn't tell you the grading criteria before grading you the assignment, then he took off you score for the parts he didn't write in the REQUIREMENT. NEVER take his class!!!
Prof Lowell never did one lecture all semester, never posted any power points either. The class was completely self-taught. Every week there were at least 2 assignments due but they weren't posted until the middle of the week. Exams were extremely hard. Project for the final but had no idea what he wanted so was very hard to complete
Prof Lowell is one of the worst in the CIS department. Never did any lectures or posted any power points. When it came time for the final project expected us to apply the information we should've learned all semester, but didn't. Very picky grader on the weekly assignments. Exams weren't terrible but definitely need to study
Rodd never failed to make the course harder than it should be. Good luck ever reaching out for help because 100% of the time your question is answered back with a question, or a simple "there is something wrong with your code." Rodd is a poor excuse for a professor and was reported to higher ups multiple times this semester alone for his laziness.
COVID has made things hard for everyone, but you won't find any empathy with Lowell. He would still make class mandatory during a PANDEMIC, and when asking for the lecture, he would simply say you should've been in class. Grading was basedon howhe felt. I received a 50% on TWO projects since he never provided feedback until the end. avoid this clas
seems like a nice guy, but he has no right teaching CIS 260 at GVSU. The board has his back with over 25 years of experience, he uses it against his students in a deceiving way setting them up for failure. No rubric, no guidance, grades how he wants, no sympathy, late grader, absolute chaos. But you don't realize it until he fails you. Watch Out!
Professor Lowell is one of the best professors for this class. There are usually two assignments a week and sometimes a quiz. But he allows multiple attempts at the homework and the quizzes are straight forward from the book. He can be very helpful in class and allows you time to do homework during this time as well.
Loved professor Lowell! Very nice and helpful. Very accessible outside of class as well!
Unfortunately, GVSU offers one CIS260 section a semester, and it's taught by Lowell. During his hybrid class during COVID19, he did not upload weekly lecture videos as he had indicated in his syllabus. He said we could use the videos in place of in-person class if we needed to quarantine. Later, he blamed our struggles on us missing classes.
I'm not sure why he has a low rating on RMP! Prof Lowell is an amazing guy and really just wants his students to succeed. If things are confusing or you have a question, either go to office hours or email him -- he is super amazing at getting back to you ASAP. I definitely would take a class of his again. He was a great prof.
IF you are a IT major at gvsu and you take this as a elective please drop the class and take something else. This isn't worth the pain and struggle he brings. pretends to care, grades slow, also has no regard for responding quickly.
Decent professor. It was nice when he walked through the Access projects with us. But when it came to the final project or anything other than the Access projects I was at a complete loss. And he wasn't much help with figuring it out. Lectures and textbooks are worthless.
I learned absolutely nothing. I am confident in Lowell's knowledge, it just doesn't transfer well in lectures. Very slow grader. I had him for a different class and he was slightly better, but not by much. Very chill dude, just again, he doesn't teach very well.
It's ridiculous how they make you pay for credits for your OWN INTERNSHIP
This professor posts a lot of lectures every week, but they can be difficult to follow, so I don't feel like I learned much from this class. He grades nice for most of the semester but once it comes to the final projects he will get you on anything he does not like. Overall, pretty average.
He is good but takes a little while to grade and could have a better layout in his course.
professor does not help with questions or concerns regarding with material. Will give you a failing grade even if assignment was turned but computer screwed up. Not organized.
Good, funny, nice professor. However grades slowly. Weekly quizzes were open note. Strict attendance grade. Lots of reading/prep to do before classes. Exams were pretty easy but had to do a lot of review for them. Doesn't really feel like a CIS class. The internship and interview prep parts of this class were super useful though.
Teaching a database class isn't the most engaging thing to learn as a student, so he deserves some slack for that. He's got regular office hours if you're in a pinch too. It's not a inherently hard class, but it will eat you alive if you slack on stuff early. Just try to do your best on the early assignments and projects and you should be fine.
Grades extremely slowly. Can get boring if you already have an internship. Half of the class is a history of computing, ethics and have common sense, the other half is learning internships and making a resume. Open notes quizzes mainly about ethics and computing history, some trick questions. Also attendance is required.
So much useless work in this class. Mandatory attendance, but never really needed to go. Phone use required for almost everything. Weekly quizzes with VERY specific questions. Weekly assignments. 3 exams even though only 2 needed. He is looking for a specific answer so write enough to convey the idea. Lectures just repeat readings
It makes me so upset that this is a required course and he's the only guy who teaches it. I stopped trying the keep up with the absolutely insane amount of reading after he assigned a 20 page case study on Saturday to be read by Tuesday. He assigns so much work, but can't even get it posted
he cares a lot about this class. he tells you to read a lot of things but he goes over all of them in class so you don't really need to read them as long as you pay attention. there are quizzes almost once a week. he provides decent study guides to study for the midterms. he is a very slow grader but a very nice professor who knows what he is doing
This is a required course for CS majors, and you'd think it's gonna be a blowoff, but don't. This guy gives like 10 hours of reading to do every week. I basically gave up even trying to get them done by the fifth week when he gave us a 20 page case study to read, and then barely went over it for 5 minutes.
Even with lots of readings, and multiple exams, and quizes it was super easy to take and he was very open to questions. The course is lecture heavy, but doing assigned readings asap is something I would recommend for any student taking 290.
I think it has value in the sense of helping students get internships and practice interview skills, but it doesn't at all cover technical interviews. I feel like a lot of this class is a repeat of WRT 350, and I don't enjoy that they force you to take it before getting credit for internships.
Prof Lowell's class can be challenging, but Unstuck AI helped me prep for the exams and projects. The lectures are hit-or-miss, but office hours are valuable if you're struggling.
Great professor who delivers engaging lectures and genuinely cares about his students. There's a lot of work though. Lots of reading, weekly quizzes, 3 exams when we could've just taken 2, and mandatory attendance. The assignments were few and super easy though. Some may complain about the content but I think he's a pretty good professor.
Rodd will use blackboard partially, he posts some assignments on blackboard but sometimes it's up to you to remember when things are due. You are required to buy a $3 subscription to take attendance and do in class discussions. Also we read about turning down jobs if you don't agree with the companies morals which we are in no position of doing.
490 is required to graduate with a CS degree. I agree that it is dumb that you have to pay for an internship, but this forces you to find one. The journals were annoying, but helpful in hindsight. The other assignments during this course were straightforward. The hardest part is just finding the internship.
