Let's his ego get in the way of his teaching. Doesn't care is the students understand or not, as long as he covers the material.
He goes over the material fast in class. He does not care if you make an A or an F. He does not give partial credit on essay questions or any other ones either. He is very self absorbed and cares only about himself and getting through the lecture. He is not very helpful, and there is slim chance in getting extra points on a regrade. Get another prof
While the course material is very interesting, the test matter is completely subjective and unfair.
his lectures are not clear, goes way too fast and his tests are very hard.
The subject material is hard and he covers it quickly. The tests are very random, and essay style. I think they are a little bit unfair, and half of the time the TA's don't know what's going on either, so review sessions are not helpful for the tests.
I took him for the FYOS class "Nature Vs Nurture" which was suppose to be about genetics however we barely talked about it and in the end you know no more about the subject than what you came in with. He talks a lot about himself and says not very nice things which deliberately hurt others feelings. DO NOT TAKE HIM. Easy class, mean guy.
I took this odyssey course in order to learn about nature vs nurture but definitely came out of the class more confused than before.. However, super easy class, pretty much automatic A if you show up and do the little assignments he gives. He is also pretty funny and I always had a good time talking to him.
I loved Dr. Mauricio! He tries to keep his lectures fairly clear and he gives a lot of extra credit opportunities. Definitely one of my favorite professors.
lot of people hate this guy cause of his testing style. decide for yourself if you like it. as long as you can explain answers he does not care if you use terms/vocab, tests are mostly applying principals you learned into scenarios 3 small books instead of a textbook, everything you needed was in ppt insane amounts of artsy extra credit
This is by far the worst class I have ever taken. There is a reason why there were still so many seats when I registered late. This is a feast or famine class, you will either do really well or really badly. The reason being it's mostly essay based test with silly scenarios and a subjective grading system, basically you have to think like them.
I seriously wished I had listen to the previous reviews. Testing style is very weird, and if you are a straight forward no nonsense student; this is not your cup of tea. TAs tired ( I guess) to help, but they hardly knew what was going on. To me there was just too much randomness and subjectivity and there was no reason for it. Test are cumulativ
I took GENE 3000 during the July session and it was a great idea! It was a lot to cram into a month, so be ready to work! There was a quiz each day covering previous material and some cumulative, read 3 total books (1 per week), video quizzes, and final - all testing done on ELC. Dropped 5 or so quizzes at the end!
Mauricio is one of my favorite professors Ive had at UGA. He is passionate about his profession and it comes off in lectures. Only thing negative I would say would be his testing style is difficult and the class averages are low but read the assigned books and go to class and youll be fine since he curves the class. Lots of EC available
This class is a joke .You are not tested on whether you understand evolutionary concepts. You are tested based on small details and whether you apply evolutionary concepts to MADE UP scenarios in the same way Mauricio does. The final was 249 questions! This class is more about mind games than learning. He is a nice person but a horrible educator.
Dr. Mauricio is simply egotistical to think that he can solve a semester of unfair tests by just curving at the end. You will be fine gradewise in this class but you will torture yourself all semester wondering what your grade is because the average for the tests is failing. They arent fair, he knows they arent fair but he wont change.
Exams for Mauricio's Gene 3000 are not based on lecture! Exams are based on the textbook and free response. He says he curves the class but it's not enough to make a difference so don't rely upon it. He's a good lecturer but it doesn't matter because the exams aren't based upon lecture. I would take another prof.
He is by far the most interesting professor I have ever taken. However, he said on the first day his exams were insanely difficult and he wasn't kidding. Skipping lecture puts you at a disadvantage because he gives EC opportunities in class and sometimes uses class examples on tests. There is a good bit of homework but it is helpful.
He is honestly one of the worst professors Ive ever had. Hes rude and not helpful at all. His tests were the hardest tests I have ever taken. They were honestly harder than Ochem. The only reason I got an A- was bc of a generous curve and some extra credit. That is the only good thing I have to say. It was dreadful. He makes you read like 5 books
Just don't. I think the best way to describe him is he is brilliant. He knows what he is talking about and he himself is very well educated - but he is just not an educator. He does not let you review old exams and quizzes so you don't learn from mistakes. He is nice but also kinda weird. Avoid avoid avoid at all costs!!!
I dreaded logging into this zoom call every Tuesday/Thursday. This class should be counted as psychological manipulation. Mauricio plays mind games. He has random in class pop quizzes and doesn't release any exams/quizzes. You only get your grades back, so you don't know if you're actually getting certain questions correct. Just don't.
Dont take this class if you can help it. If you didnt show up right as the zoom class starts you wouldnt get to take the mandatory quiz thats worth 30% of your grade. Also, you will never see the answers to those quiz questions and they will be reused on tests. You have to read almost the whole textbook just to fail the quizzes and tests.
This professor never gives feedback and makes all of his grades relative to each other. Relative grades with unproctored online tests were very frustrating because people could easily cheat and would do better driving honest grades down. I never saw once saw feedback and never felt prepared for tests or quizzes. Also, he was kind of rude sometimes.
Though he is very interesting and I learned a lot, the stress of not knowing your grades until after finals is horrible. He refused to release any examinations to let us learn the material and what we did wrong. The in class pop quizzes counted more than the exam. Though I ended with a good grade, it was stressful and if you can, you should avoid.
We had to read three whole books and watch hours of documentaries only to get quizzes that we all got bad grades on. Of course, the curve helped, but it's not like we got to see what our grades were curved to until we checked our unofficial transcripts at the end of the semester. Overall, interesting material, but very poorly taught.
if you can avoid this class do. it is awful and everyone fails every exam. you will not know your grade until the very end because he curves it since everyone fails. way too much work and informational all at once. AVOID
He was very unresponsive to emails and his lectured barley helped in our exams. Our averages were literally 30s and 40s and you dont know your grade until grades are put in because the class relies on the curve and EC to pass. He is arrogant and makes you feel bad for answering questions in class, even if we are partially right. 4 books, 4 exams.
While he is obviously very knowledgable about the subject, he was not a great professor. We had to read 4 books outside of the regular textbook readings, textbook homeworks, long documentaries, and documentary quizzes. He was also often rude when answering questions in class and you literally don't know your grade until transcripts are released.
Tests are hard but you get a 40 point curve so you literally have to do nothing
Everyone is being dramatic. He is a great lecturer - this was one of my favorite classes ever. The exams are hard but he curves so don't be upset with exam scores. He gives fun arts and crafts style extra credit. He also has novels that go with each section - if you are a stem major that appreciates the liberal arts this class is for you.
Professor Mauricio was a very nice, funny guy. However, in our FYOS we had to write an essay almost every week on top of reading some complex scientific articles. Class included mostly boring lectures, some discussion. He is pretty unresponsive via email.
I have nothing but great things to say about Dr. Mauricio. He is one of the better professors that I've had at UGA and I would take this class again in a heartbeat. He expressed how the exams are difficult, but he does not want to hurt our GPAs. The exams were difficult, but he curves and other assignments in class are grade boosters.
Mauricio's lectures are boring and not all that helpful for exams. Exams are mostly based off of the homework and he gives large curves. If you do the homework, read the sparknotes for the books and read the taxonomy info from his slides you can make an A
Lectures can be a little dry at times, but Dr. Mauricio genuinely seems like a caring guy and is very accessible through email. Homework and quizzes help out on tests considerably, so as long as you go back and study both his taxonomy slides and previous homework assignments, you'll do more than alright.
While I did well in this class,.it was from no help of the professor. His lectures are long and boring and usually irrelevant to exams. The majority of exams come from the hundreds of pages of reading. The tests are very difficult and he does curve. He enjoys watching students struggle and fail. He's smart and can be funny but that is it.
Be aware that any absence, excused or unexcused, will dock you half a letter grade. I came down with a contagious flu and dropped a full letter grade (one half for not turning in our weekly essay, and one half for missing class).
Too much work for an FYOs.
GENE3000 taught by Mauricio is one of the most intense classes I have taken at UGA. I am a pre-Med student and I have done well in most classes. The difficulty associated with this class is astounding. The tests are reflected clearly by book, and lectures play no role at all. Furthermore, he provides no resources for exam. Dont take this class
While Mauricio does have complications with his personality that make class unenjoyable, my main concern over his class is the excess of papers, with lack of feedback and consideration toward our perspectives. The most feedback we have received is an "ok" with little acknowledgement during discussion time. He is very uninvolved and careless.
DO not take this professor. I was choosing between this and ecology and wanted something I would have interest in. Biggest mistake of my college. The lectures are only partly on the test and inquizitive SUCKS. The discussion is attendance mandatory (not like regular genetics). Honestly just wanted an easy credit and this was not the one.
Tests over the most obscure information from lectures and books. Has 4 extra books in addition to textbook, even though he has mentioned that some are outdated and wrong. It's as if he was given a lesson 40 years ago on how to be a professor and then never learned how to correct the mistakes in his class over time.
Really not as bad as the others are saying. They probably never went to class. It is a LOT of HW, memorizing, and he wants you to read 4 novels. But if you go to class, he explains things well and tries to make it fun. Tests are hard, but going to class helps. It is a hard, upper-level class, and I think his teaching reflects that appropriately.
If you're considering this class to avoid ecology, make the decision CAREFULLY. I realize the course if 4 credits, but even considering that, there is an ungodly workload for a single, intermediate course. Nice guy in lecture, but good luck getting a hold of him by email. The only shining star in the class is that exam scores are curved.
The dude started off the year and showed some promise that the semester wouldn't be as terrible as the reviews were for him, but he quickly showed why he has all these bad ratings. You can't reason with him, he doesn't like to work with anyone in the class, and would rather pit the whole class against each other than be a good professor.
Mauricio was probably the worst professor I've had in 3 years at UGA. Very full of himself. Don' t expect any explicit instruction on how or what to study, even if you set up a meeting he will just explain random stuff not relevant to exams. Class exam averages were always in the 30s and he doesn't curve the final. Avoid him at all costs.
Like the other reviews say, he showed promise at the beginning of the semester but boy was I wrong. His tests are cumulative and very difficult. There is a lot of homework, and on top of that videos and novels. He gives really long (11/2 hr) videos for 6 minute quizzes. His lectures are unhelpful for the course and exam questions are very specific.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I ignored the reviews before I took this class hoping it would not be too bad, but I regret it. If you have other options, take them. Do not do this one. I am not even dumb either
This class was unnecessarily a heavy workload. You have a paper to get done every week. I had more homework in this class than I did in my own major required classes. Attendance is mandatory. He'll drop your grade by a letter just for missing one class. However, if you do the work and barely participate in the discussion every week, you'll befine.
Mauricio is easily the worst prof I've had a UGA. He gives no expectations for what will be on the test and they focus on random details from hundreds of lecture slides. The TA's are just as confused as you are. He moves fast too, we covered the history of life on Earth in two days!! Please don't take his class if you like yourself or your sanity!
Mauricio is an incredibly difficult professor. There's a lot of homework, most of which is not too difficult, but the sheer volume of things to do quickly became overwhelming. Powerpoints are only posted if a certain percentage of the class shows up. Tests often contain questions on obscure information from lecture. Tests are curved though.
Tests were difficult, lecture wasn't useful at all in my opinion, homeworks and video quizzes weren't too hard though
For an FYOS course that is designed for students to explore the university culture, this guy with his syllabus policy "any absent(excused or unexcused) will result in a lower letter grade". Avoid him at all costs.
vidoes and lecture content are cool. tests are insane
One of the most arrogant professors I have ever had. There's no way you can prepare for the exams and on top if it he likes to schedule homework and quizzes at the worst possible times to catch you off guard. Avoid at all costs.
Best professor at UGA. Everyone complaining are just pre-med evolution haters. His lectures are super engaging and he gives fun extra credit. Yes the tests are hard but everyone fails them so his curves are insane - you will pass. Also god forbid a professor has a personality. He is hilarious and if you dish it back he will respect you for it.
Missing one class drops you a letter grade. Paper due every week. Multiple pre-class readings. No phones (took people's phones many times). Class was sitting in a circle and talking, which you are expected to highly engage in but he will fight with you if you have an opinion that isn't his. Overall, pretty rude and disrespectful, but not that hard.
LOTS of homework. We had a textbook plus 4 other books we had to read for each test. Homework and video quizzes saved pretty much everyone's grade. Tests are impossible so he has to curve them about 30 points. Only posts slides sometimes. Never responds to emails. Cuts you off if you try to answer a question in class. Just don't take him.
Dr. Mauricio made exams extremely difficult but curves every single one. I did not feel like the exams were impossible and did well on two of the first three. The final is a lot as it is 180 questions and cumulative, but doable. MAKE SURE YOU DO EVERY ASSIGNMENT OUTSIDE OF CLASS. This will help balance out your test grades!
Dr. Mauricio lectures well and tries to make class fun! Tests can seem like random info but are all curved and aren't that bad if you do the outside work. Inquizitives, 4 books, + videos is a lot but are all very interesting and help solidify concepts from class. It's an upper level class, but if you work hard a good grade is perfectly attainable!
don't take this class unless you're interested in evolutionary bio, doing the homework balances out tests but you need to still do well on the tests. i found lecture very boring but thats just because im not interested in the material. get ready to read fr
Don't take this class unless you absolutely have to. The test grades all average around a 45 and he has to curve a lot. The homework assignments and videos are SO time consuming. If you do have to take the class, try not to take it on top of other difficult classes. Do all assignments other than tests, it balances out your grade.
This class was so unnecessarily difficult! Thankfully, the grade is half homework/other assignments and half tests/final. The lectures are pretty boring, but you feel like you have to go. I would recommend taking a different class if you can to fulfill upper division credits. There is so much more things, but I would advise against taking this.
His class is just time-consuming, but the concepts are relatively basic since all material basically tied back to evolution being survival of the fittest. If you learn the first unit well, you'll be alright. You do have to take weekly video quizzes, read a book per month, and have textbook homework. Lectures optional but I'd recommend.
Listen to what everyone says and do not take this class over ecology. If you don't listen and continue with the class just know that the tests are curved very well.
Do outside assignments because it will balance the grade. Exams are cumulative & difficult. Go to lecture: he will mention extra credit exam questions. Heavy reading!!!! Tree of life = on the exam. Know the equations. Read the books! Sparknotes = not enough. If you aren't a Genetics major, take a different class. It's hard & stressful
This is definitely a tough course. It doesn't really matter if you show up to class or not since the slides are always posted, however, I would show up because he sometimes gives extra credit. The tests are very difficult and it is hard to do well on them. That provided, the curves are pretty high. Overall, it is not as horrible as some people say.
Dr Mauricios terrible attitude matches his low ratings (not surprised). Rude, unresponsive, and offers no resources beyond the textbook. Worse, he seems clueless about whats on the exams, leaving students unprepared. Lacks compassion and refuses to accommodate even in emergencies. Unnecessarily stressful and a threat to your GPA. Avoid at all costs
Very odd guy. The actually info for the class is interesting but the assignments and tests are not indicative of understanding. Half the questions are impossibly oddly specific. Most tests have a good curve but the final is cumulative and uncurved he never shows you your final grade before on Athena. No grace for missing an assignment for any reason
Dr. Mauricio is incredibly arrogant and makes the class/content much harder than it has to be. Every test was curved because averages were so low. He assigns long readings, homework assignments, and videos every week and sometimes due the same day. Take a different class if you aren't interested in evolution or if you want an easy A.
He is a very bland professor not interesting at all. Lots of inquisitive assignments and videos/quizzes every week. Very content heavy a lot of busy work. The test weigh a lot and they are very difficult questions which are very topic sensitive. He creates the test to be very difficult and does not curve. Do all the busy work and you should pass.
Take ANY fyos that's not this one. 500 word paper due every week a day before class. Often on research papers he expected us not to understand. Class discussion always resulted in arguments. Every absence or missed assignment drops you a grade, no chance for late work. Very strict on which fyo events were "acceptable." Find another fyos.
Not as bad as people say. Very interesting class and he explains things well. Exams are very difficult. Homework is also not as bad as people say, although most of it feels like busy work.
He was not nice at all. Literally no care for other human beings. His tests are insanely hard and the average is literally a 30. It's like he wants you to fail
The goofiest ahh professor I've ever met. Don't worry about the hard tests. He curves them all. One of them got curved from a 56 to an 83. Just do all of the inquizitives, video quizzes, and other assignments well and you'll be fine :)
the rudest teacher I have ever had. The least understanding and meanest person. he doesn't care for students or their grades. AVOID him
Great lectures. I learned so much. Fair course. Lots of work, but mostly straightforward. Loved Dr. Mauricio. Best professor at UGA.
This was my absolute favorite course at UGA. Professor ties evolutionary biology into all aspects of biology. Very entertaining lectures. Lots of work and you can't slack, but grading is really fair.
I don't know if something changed between last semester and this semester, but none of the other reviews reflected my experience with the class. All the tests were curved by literally like 30 points. 50% of your grade is handed to you on a silver platter. Genuinely the most entertaining lectures, he was genuinely so funny and engaging.
Not sure why this guy gets poor ratings. Course is very straightforward and very fair. Lots of material, but lectures are really clear and well organized. Expect to put in the work. This is not a class for slacking or not keeping up.
OKAY Professor, but the course is impossible to balance with other classes. There is a lot of course material and coursework; video quizzes, a homework website, and reading a book before each exam. Cumulative exams are rough as well. It is just a lot of information to balance. OKAY professor, just a really difficult course!
Wouldn't recommend taking his class with any other major class. Take it when you have a lighter courseload, or just choose another professor. You will have to read 4 books in total and go through the lecture slides to prepare for exams (two of which are cumulative). Grades for each exam will be curved if the class average is below 80%.
The lecture was very interesting and I learned a lot in the class. It's not that hard if you actually go to class and do the assignments. Don't take this course if you plan on skipping lecture. Tests are very difficult and there's usually a heavy curve. I think the discussion is pointless but oh well. Mauricio isn't that bad but is very a hard prof
Go to class. Ik attendance isn't mandatory but he is 100% real when he says if you don't go to class then you won't succeed in the class. Theres so much material that isn't uploaded to slides or information about exams that are only given in class. You will not do well if you only use the slides and textbook (trust bc i thought it would work)
-Lectures are engaging -1/2 ur grade is easy points: discussion, HW, video quizzes -Funny but rude/sarcastic -Tests ~100 Qs; expect a 50–80 with -20-pt curve. No rhyme or reason. Feels like a fun facts test. -1 book per test: actually have to read it -Final isn't curved; 230 Qs -Grades balance out in the end but it's hard and stressful class
Dr. Mauricio is a very dry, blunt person and can seem rude sometimes. Attendance isn't mandatory, but he makes it very clear that you need to come to succeed. All of the tests besides the final are curved. You have to read 4 books, but I got away with only reading 2 of them. Don't take this class if you don't have to.
