This prof is a Harvard Phd/His class requires some reading/I strongly recommend
This teacher is very passionate about his subject and a fine educator
You've got to come to class to do good on his exams. It's not that hard if you come to class. His lectures are kind of boring though
very easy as long as you go to class, and memorize the paintings he shows. he drops one grade, so you can bomb one grade!
This was the most BORING teacher! he "Umms" and "UHH"s all the time (403 in 1 class time)!! He gives you 55 images to memorize for a essay test and only tests you on 4. Then you don't get the test back until the end of the semester, he
Misses a lot of classes, you never know until the last minute that class is cancelled. Doesn't keep office hours he posts. Showed up once and told us to go home, he didn't have a lecture prepared. Good lectures though, when he's there. I like him a lot.
Worse professor I have taken at UH 1. He is usually not prepared for class. 2. cancels class quite often without a reason. 3. Very dull. 4.Forgets information he is attempting to teach. 5.Loses student's papers (shame Harvard graduated him)
good for a nap
Very unorganized and scattered. Boring lectures. Tests are slides shown, no name bank. Lots of art looked at, around 20 slides on test. Made B-, dont know how. Check other prfs before taking this one.
This man is very passionate about what he does and tells interesting facts about art(which don't go on the test but are fun - if you like art). He gives you EVERYTHING you need to know IN CLASS and cancels a lot of classes too - you can't go wrong!!!
This teacher is very smart and interesting but school has barely started and he has already cancelled classes.
Knows information well and enjoys teaching. Had two exams (midterm and non-cumulative final). Each exam is two essay questions and each question is a response to slide(s). Come to class and pay attention to the slides and info. There is also a 10 page paper due at the end of the semester.
GREAT PROFESSOR AND GOOD ON GRADING POLICY. HE HAS TAKEN A FEW EXTRA DAYS LONGER TO GET OUR FINAL GRADES IN THOUGH.
you can tell he knows alot about his subject, but his lectures can be very long and boring. Says "um" a lot. Cancels classes randomly. 3 tests (m/c, study notes and paintings in book and u'll be ok), 2 papers(you have to go to MFA). Just stay awake.
Ive never heard of an exciting art history class, so you can expect This guy to be boring, but atleast he's pretty easy. Tests are extremely easy. I never study and get a B-. Essays are a bit of a pain, but there are only 2 and you have plenty of time to plan them. Its a breeze.
my friend came with me and hated the class but i love it. he teachs so you can understand and is one of the better teachers at u of h also he gives good lectures. went to a lecture outsid eof class about dutch painters and actually liked it. riot now i sound like a kiss ass but he still teachs well.
Worst professor i've had the misfortune to have. puts you sleep the minute he opens his mouth says uh-uh-um all the time. very disorganized and never delivers/returns papers and tests results as promised.
Nevitt's a great prof. Knows his material and tells interesting facts about everything. The tests are pretty easy. also funny, and cute in a smart professor way.
good but needs to review his ta work
his class is super easy but it's super boring. he does cancel class a lot and that can be annoying if it's your only class that day like it was for me. if you go everyday and read the book, i bet you could get a B or an A easily. the papers aren't too bad but it was hard to write so many pages about art. if you're a good BS'er, you'll be fine.
This professor is really smart and his lectures are good. Tests are easy enough but you have to be prepared to study the material. He is a bit scattered with returning papers and grades. Someone needs to remind him to be on time.
he gives lectures and slowly rambles away fromn the topic. he really likes the history of the art more than the art itself which is ok, but just be prepared to listen. If you do not like lazor lights as pointers i suggest you find another professor haha
He's a very bright man. Apparently he went to Rice and Harvard. Sadly, he can get very boring. If you are tired, you probably will fall asleep. His voice is very monotone. But, he knows his stuff. The tests are pretty easy as long as you are prepared. Just don't go to class tired.
He's a nice guy, but probably the most BORING professor i've ever had. He makes me hate art history. His lectures literally put me to sleep. 3 tests and 2 papers throughtout the course.
Tests were really easy if you studied at all. Papers were graded by TAs, and unfairly so. Many complained and some had their papers regraded by him. Overall, he was good at the beginning of the semester, but about halfway through he really started to ramble and get a little off topic sometimes
Very knowledgeable. If you are a class-skipper, you'll probably manage to pull a C/low B if you come by before each class and pick up a slide list so you at least know what to study for the tests. 3 tests, no final, 2 papers that require you to go to the MFAH. I recommend him highly. He knows his stuff and is cute in a Your Dad kind of way.
He does his lectures in dim lighting with slides which puts you to sleep very easily. If you go to class and read the assigned chapters, you will do well on the tests. They are mostly multiple choice and matching.
BORING.....so so BORING, just dropped the class. Monotone lectures, expensive book.
His lectures are so relevant to the class. You will save yourself alot of trouble if you go. What he says is interesting, but the way he says it is boring. It's really hard to stay awake. If you go to class you can skip reading the book and you'll be more prepared for the tests.
Dr. Nevitt is a really nice guy, kinda cute too:-) I don't know how to make Art History "exciting." What he says is very interesting but it is easy to fall asleep in the dark. You can get a good grade if you listen, take notes and do the museum assignments. Tests are not too bad if you come by and get the list of slides to study
So boring! Just get the lecture notes outside of class and LEAVE! I'll have to admit though, when I actually went to class, he'd wear his glasses and he looks sooo hot in an intellectual kind of way. If you don't go to class get the book so you can atleast study for the 3 tests. There are 2 papers. The 2nd one you don't have to go to the MFAH.
Easy class, It is boring, and his very monotoned when he lecures but overall his very knowlegeble about what he lectures. And he will say ummm about 3,000 times in one class period.
At first, he seems really boring (his voice is such that I half expected him to say, "Beuller? Bueller?"), and I skipped class a bit, since he gives the notes at the door, but once I started listening more, I realized that his lectures were actually very insightful, and he's even got a little sense of humor about him!
Had him for 17th century dutch painting. knowledgeable about subject but goes off on tangents which makes note taking difficult
Agree with the person who said he seems boring at first, but if you listen to his lectures, they're insightful. I have him this semester and like him a lot. He's humble and doesn't have an arrogant "too bad for you" attitude I see in lots of teachers. Also, I'd say the class is "just right" as far as level of difficulty.
Can be very boring, which makes him difficult to follow. Passionate about his subject and a very nice person in general. Biggest fault is that he is a poor lecturer--makes it hard to focus in class because he is monotonous and repetitive.
You can probably pull a B/C on tests if you come and get slide lists every day and keep up with reading, but there are questions that are only in lecture. You might not want to take his 1381, but his upper level classes are great. Very passionate and interesting. He's my favorite prof.! Nice guy but hard to get in touch with outside of class
This professor is bright, dignified, humorous and yes humble and maybe the last of the old schoolers. His lectures make you feel like you are attending a university.A true Harvard man. Don't take his class if you don't have the caliber.
He is very monotone, which makes it extremely difficult to pay attention, but is extremely nice. His tests are average, meaning you do have to study for them, but he does let you know, generally, what'll be on the test. Make sure you turn in the papers and pick up the slide outlines and you'll do fine.
Yeah he may have had a few dull lectures, but the majority of them were very interesting. He knows his field very well and applies it broadly to social culture, philosophies, styles of the time etc. Very Fair grader. I am happy with the knowledge that I have retained from this class. Good, painless learning experience! Would take again no question.
not sure which parts of lectures to note down, so I try to write down everything he says about paintings. Most of what he says about paintings may not be in the book, so I studied both book and notes for exam. But, did not do too well on test regardless of the time and effort. To me, the exams were confusing and lots of"none or all of these" choices
Excellent lecturer although his "uhs" can get a little distracting. Class tends to run long so don't count on getting out early. If you love art history you'll love him. Super bright guy who knows his stuff. Beware of his tangents, although those tend to be entertaining. None of his courses are blow-off, so must be a serious student if you take him
Took his class because I read on here that he was decent. He is a horrible lecturer. had Disorganized lectures and was always falling behind the schedule. Tests were hard. Answer choices included none of the above and all of the above. Very annoying even when you know the material.
All he does during lectures is ramble on and on.I tried to write everything down but it is hard to get every single word.It would probably be better to bring a voice recorder.2 papers over painting at art museum, with one requiring to read the BIBLE (I didn't realize this was art THEOLOGY?! Jeez...) Somehow I managed to get a B- that ruined 4.0 GPA
I absolutely love him, and he's even better if you take him for non-survey classes. He is a sweet and friendly man, and I did not find his survey class to be too difficult. When he is talking about what he loves most, he gets really excited. It's nice to see when your professors love what they do! Make sure you try to write down everything he says.
nice guy but talks like ben stein and rambles. handouts are hard to follow with slides. made a D+ on the first exam which is unusually low for me. record lectures and try to stay awake.
This guy really loves Art History. If you into Art this is the professor to take. If you dont like art, you probably fall asleep during class. I rarely went to class and when I did I was half asleep and didnt take notes. You are required to do two paper. Also test are really hard. I am mostly an A student but in this class I got a C+.
not bad at all. You have to be mature enough to understand that its college and we have to deal with lecutres, willing to listen, and go to class. His class is pretty easy just go to class. He is horrible at answering your emails though and getting your grades back on time is not his thing. I would take him again though.
When it comes to Art History, this Professor is a Genius. I went to class almost every day and ended up with a B+, never took any notes. Just study the slides and you will be fine. When you get the syllabus, just throw it out. After the first week, he was never on schedule for anything. Grades for tests and papers take forever to get back.
just go to class and take notes. he's bad at getting tests back to you and never answers your emails. If you just pay attention and go to class you'll be fine. Pretty easy grader.
Easy Professor. He will give you all the slides on a paper for you to study for the test.I just picked up the slides paper at the beginning of the class and left.I made an easy A+.My article (essay) I submitted was all BS and I got A+.
Monotonous, does not return test grades when stated, does not answer emails. Impossible to follow in class due to tangents, though tests are only on slides that are also in the text. I wouldn't take his class again, nice guy but not the best professor ever.
Boring, Monotonous and acts like he doesn't care about what he teaches and doesn't care for his students education and progress. His specialty is Dutch painting, and he spends most of the semester talking about it. We didn't make it past the impressionists, and we barely touched base on them. And the class ended today. Way to go Prof. Nevitt!!!
Dr. Nevitt is a VERY laid back person! Unfortunately this made him very disorganize in teaching ARTH 1381. As the previous post has mentioned, we only went up to Post-Impressionism and a DAB in early 20th century art. We only covered ONE Picasso painting and didn't even touch on contemporary artists living in our time. Not recommended!
Extremely hard to stay awake in this class, seriously almost impossible. I tried really hard this semester, but he still gave me a B and dropped my 4.0 GPA. Not an easy grader and the class is not interesting at all. Definitely would not recommend!
I took Dr. Nevitt's Methods class as well as Baroque and Seventeenth Century Dutch Painting. If you need to be entertained, and expect to slide by without doing work, then don't take him. On the other hand, if you want a professor who is a cut above in intelligence, take him. I made an A in each of his classes, and I learned quite a lot.
EXCELLENT & EASY A! He is VERY nice. A true expert in his field & passionate about it. Monotone voice & makes little jokes & available meet with you. Class time either sleep time or similar to watching T.V. to learn something. Cheaper to copy book sections, ~15 handouts needed for tests, 2 papers (need book), 2 exams (no comprehensive) & NO FINAL.
WOW! What a GREAT professor! He's not like an evangelist, but he's not monotone either. He has a passion and it shows. He is very helpful and really makes this class very interesting. The class is not difficult as long as you read and study. Only small complaint would be he's slow on getting grades done. HIGHLY RECOMMEND HIM! You won't regret it.
Nevitt is a very smart professor. It's obvious that he's very passionate about what he does. As long as you read the book, which is not a hard read at all, and pay attention in class you will do good. I studied for about 3 hours for each test and got A's on them. His lectures can be a bit boring but they're not unbearable. If you want to learn and are willing to put in the work take this professor.
He is a very smart guy ,but he is a little scatter brained. He never answers emails ,that is very frustrating. This class isn't hard though if you study and pay attention. He appreciates effort and you have to try to fail.
Easiness: Only IF the student studies. Helpfulness: Professor willingly answers any questions after the lecture. Clarity: somewhat. Tips: Record the lectures. Book is free online - requires torrenting, though. VISIT the places suggested by the professor in order to get a clue on what the art is about (for the essay). Professor "procrastinates" :D
This is the most disorganized professor ever. He wants topic submissions and rough drafts but never gets them back to you. He is very scatter brained and never covers all the material for class.
This class consists of: 30% Midterm Exam, 30% Final Exam, 40% Research Paper (10 pages), Exam 1: he had 5 slides of different paintings, 20 minutes each for 3 of the paintings, 10 minutes each for 2 paintings. Exam 2: he had 4 slides of paintings, was 20 minutes each. Don't procrastinate on your essay, finish it early. This class is an easy A.
This class is really easy but there's only one problem. Professor Nevitt takes FOREVER to grade anything. It gets really frustrating. However he is a really sweet and the tests are super easy. The papers made me cry because they are long and it's hard to write as if you are an official art historian. Use the book a lot.
Although he is incredibly brilliant and knowledgable, I would not take from him again. He is unorganized, does not answer e-mails, does not grade in a timely manner, cancels class frequently, and makes it difficult to understand what is expected. It is really unfortunate because his lectures can be very interesting, and his love for AHIS shows.
He's nice and passionate. 3 tests and 2 papers, drop 1 grade (either paper or test). Tests are concise with 50 multiple choice questions covering around 20 paintings . You have to go to class to know the answer of some questions since he tests on what has been discussed in class.
Rodney is a great professor. I would recommend him to anyone.
Professor nevitt is a nice guy but he takes FOREVER TO GRADE EXAMS AND PAPERS!!!! It is so hard to stay awake in hid class so I do not recommend sitting in the back of the classroom! Exams (3) are 50 MC AND 2 papers where you have to go to the art museum!
Lectures are super boring and really hard to get through. But all of the three tests have a lot of questions over stuff he talked about in class which even if you do go its super hard to remember. I would just read about every painting in the book the night before, did okay that way. There are two papers, but he grades them super easy. SO MONOTONE
He's a good professor, knows his stuff and is very fair about exams and essays. They do take a while to grade, so don't be too worked up over them. His lectures are clear and informative but he has a nice and calm voice - not necessarily monotonous but it's nice to listen to which is bad when you're in a darkened auditorium and you're sleepy.
I was excited to learn Dutch but became uninterested the first day. The man is very monotone. Takes forever to grade and post powerpoints - it sucked having to wait to study them. You can forget about emailing him because he never responds. Loses track of time, just unorganized. Hard exams. Had to teach myself, not a way to end my final semester.
I would definitely recommend this professor. Sure sometimes his lectures are kind of long, but he really knows his stuff and it's not hard to get an A in the course. He'll often give you a few test answers during the lectures. Really nice guy and good class.
Dr. Nevitt is a really nice prof. I thought the material he discussed in class was interesting. If you have no interest in Renaissance art history or art at all, then take a different class. I don't know how anyone can say his exams are that difficult, considering all of the answers to his MC questions are given in lectures at some point.
Took this course last year in the spring. This professor is one of the greats. Test topics (basically test questions) are clearly repeated throughout lecture, reviews before the exams basically reinforce what you've heard, very helpful. Essays are few and typically easy. This is a great course, easy to relax and listen to art history stories.
They weren't lying -- these were the most boring lectures I've ever attended. I'm usually an attentive student, but I actually found myself falling asleep in my seat. The tests are 90% T/F and if you go to class and manage to pay attention they can be kinda easy. The essays are long and difficult, grading criteria is unclear. I wouldn't recommend.
He makes lectures very very monotone to the point of making people fall asleep. Very unorganized for lectures, grading papers and finishes lectures very late. Tests are okay, but if you want an A, sadly you have to be on class. There is no rubric for grading papers, you're on your own. If you want an easier route, take THEA 1331, heard is very easy
You don't have to go to class but I would recommend it becuase the discussion is in the exam. Speakking of, he will leave what will be on the test really open ended in the beginning, so you should study the year of each designated painting, the medium, the artists, the origin of the artists as well as some of the history behind it.
Excellent Professor and very well prepared. I cannot stop listening to everything he has to say. He is so knowledgeable.
I did not expect the subject to be interesting, however Dr Nevitt's lectures are great and make you want to learn more about art. He has a couple assignments that make you go to MFAH and I think it is an excellent idea.
Dr. Nevitt is super chill. You can not go to a single class and still do well as long as you take the time to study on your own. If you do choose to go to class, he tends to be sort of slow, monotone, and boring but if you stay engaged or learn on your own it shouldn't be a problem. Three tests, two papers, that's it.
Amazing knowledgeable professor. Loved his lectures. If you take minimum effort of listening in class you will do weel in you exams.
Good god this guy is more monotone than Kristen Stewart...
He really cares about what he is talking about. He posts powerpoints of lectures online, making it easy to catch up if you missed. He labels what will be on the test on the powerpoints. If you are going to pack up while he is still talking, please don't do it so ridiculously loudly, it's rude.
He talks to the point where I would fall asleep. Also, sometimes class is canceled for like a week because he is "sick" or can't come so I had to self-study his class by reading the book if I wanted to pass. Anyways, even with class canceled, he still made us wrote a 5 page essay that was due in a week when he was gone. Overall would not recommend.
3 Tests, 2 papers are all youre graded on. The papers are graded harder than they should be while the exams are eh. He gives all the notes in class but his voice makes it hard. He likes to ramble on subjects so its hard to know what will actually be on the test.. Also, he never replies to emails. The grading criteria isn't given.
Genuinely cares 4 his students grades!bad gradeopportunity to retake test, absent on test daymake up exam w/o an explanation, monotone voicedifficulty to pay attention, repeats himselfgood because you'll remember what he says, taking notes may be hard but theres a ot of study tools already done online(search on google). studyeasy TESTS(mostly t/f)
Absolutely TERRIBLE. His monotone voice makes you want to fall asleep. He goes into long tangents which makes it so difficult to understand what will or won't be on each test. His papers are more complicated then they need to be. He doesn't respond to emails and posts grades too late which makes the class hard to pass.
I found him unorganized & slow but willing to help enormously. He made up missed exams for dozens of students, including me. Problem is, he won't reply to emails but if you track him down after class, he's very helpful. Papers are actually easy just long & tests are simple. The only reason this class is hard is lack of discipline so be careful!
He's a decent professor, he follows his powerpoints(the exams are based off it), he'll go into topics that will probably be in the exam so attending class is important(to me at least) but if you skip a few you should be fine. Essays aren't hard either. Some online things get posted late and he does give more time to finish them if that happens.
His lectures are boring because of his monotone voice, and he tries to follow his PowerPoint. However, I did notice he would sometimes get off topic or go into too much detail on some paintings. Tests are based off powerpoints( T/F questions mostly). I studied PTTs, did my own research, used textbook for essays. Missing class gives average grade.
Rodney Nevitt's voice is so monotone and he is easy to ramble. He doesn't express what we need to actually be writing down so taking notes was very difficult. I ended up using this time to study for other classes so I felt like I had accomplished something. Never responds to emails. Grades very late and heavily. Always starts late and ends late.
Professor Nevitt is not a bad professor, but his lectures can probably bore you. What I recommend is if you are a person who loses focus easily either 1) don't take him or 2) Sit in the front so you can hear him. His voice and mic is low but by listening to him you can learn small clues that'll be on the test. Attendance is not mandatory.
HORRIBLE. The most monotonous professor I have ever met. Boring, when he lectures he takes forever to come up with words, and stares at the screen and talks about the piece for 30 mins plus, and NEVER gets to the point. I would not recommend this prof to anybody. Don't get me wrong, the material itself is interesting, but the prof makes it boring
He does not grade hard at all when it comes to the few papers he assigns, and his tests are not hard. His voice could easily put me to sleep, but I rarely went to class and I did just fine without going.
Class is easy to pass as long as you pay attention, but he is extremely unorganized. I sent him 6-7 emails over the course of semester, and he only responded to 2 of them (one of the replies being sent after classes were finished) he can't stick to his own schedule, pushing exams/lectures back. exam 2 and 3 were pushed to both be in the final week.
