A very well-informed teacher. HE's very enthused about teaching and very energetic whereas it's almost impossible to fall asleep in class. and BELIEVE me, I fall asleep in all my other classes. I never thought that plants could be THIS interesting. However, it's not an easy class. you do have to study the lecture, book, and the labs. Also very HOT

Mr. Olsen was a great teacher. His tests are really hard though, so you can't slack off at all. He is very helpful, and you can tell he loves what he teaches. I learned so much from his Zoology class, that I have retained to this day. I highly recommend him to everyone.

Seriously the best teacher I've ever had. He really enjoys his field of science and he gets you into it. Labs are mandatory and really help with the understanding of the class. Taking notes during lectures is basically a necessity, all the questions from the test comes from them. If you are able to get into one of his classes. DO IT!!

Very, very good teacher. Tests are pretty hard, I studied tons and still got C's and D's. Ended up with a C plus in the class, final was pretty easy if you study. If you want to do well, you must devote a LOT of time. Labs weren't too bad, he's a fun teacher.

This is a very good professor. I had him for fall 2009. I was very lucky to have a professor that was very interested in biology as a first time freshman. His great interest in the subject helps you learn. There is hardly any homework, but you may have to study on your own from the book. His lectures are easy to understand.

Take this class not matter what Science you need. Olsen is one of the best teacher I've had! Biology is not an easy subject, but he does everything he can to help you do your best. Needed this class and was dreading it! WRONG! From the first day you know he is passionate about his subject and it is contagious. His lectures are informative and note taking is a requirement if you want to score well on tests. He is thorough and you have to EARN your grade but he is WILLING to help in any way!! I passed the class even though I never really read the textbook, but I strongly recommend that you do. Olsen is GREAT professor. He uses a powerpoint and posts it online prior to class so you can print it out and write right onto it! He is clear and concise and give stories and examples to help you remember the information. I am in no way going into a Biology related field but this was one of my favorite classes!!

Mr. Olsen is an AWESOME teacher that I would recommend to anyone! I had Bio 7 (Spring '11) and Bio 3 (Fall '10) with him and he is super fun, and has great anecdotes/stories to help the info stick! This is one of those instructors that will change your life. You will learn lessons that carry beyond your degree. I absolutely LOVED Mr. Olsen. He is by far my favorite teacher and he teaches in a way where you want to learn. His tests are a little hard and you need to make sure you read the book and don't just base things off of his notes.

Good teacher and good at lecturing, but I felt a little screwed over on a few assignments. For example, we had this trip to the zoo near the end of the semester and he didn't give us any actual information nor post much about it on canvas until the week of the trip. He's nice and encourages studying (a lot) and the book was very helpful.

Amazing professor who knows his stuff but his exams are basically mind games that drive you crazy. Read the textbook and understand concepts clearly and attend every lecture because you'll learn so much but also because it could make or break your exam scores. I worked my butt off and barely got an A but I'm so glad I took him.

I was dreading taking Bio, but Olsen made all the difference. He really cares about the subject. It's very clear what he wants from you and if you put a little work in, you can get a good grade. Don't miss too many assignments, there's no extra credit. I have never gotten so much out of science class, I was excited to learn. Great professor!

Cares about your success

Olsen is one of the best professors i have every met. He truly has a passion for what he teaches and to see his students succeed. With that said, he does make you work to earn your grade, but he is there to help you every step of the way. His lectures are very interesting and he loves telling little stories here and there. One of my fave classes!

Don't let others ratings fear you from taking this class. Professor Olsen does hold review sessions but those meetings are not mandatory. I do believe attending those sessions do make a difference. Always asked question if you are unsure of a topic he discussed, he always kindly takes his time to explain it.

Professor Olsen is great, he really takes his time to help his students and give them a better way to understand the concepts. Out of all my classes, his class made me feel better connected. His review sessions were beneficial, everything he would talk about would be on the test, which made me better prepared. This class was my favorite.

The exams can be a bit dificult if you dont study it's best to review your notes after class and make sure you understand the concepts.

Mr. Olsen gave fantastic lectures. He lectured students with verbal explanations, visual diagrams, kinesthetic models, and simulations from Youtube. He would answer questions with patience, kindness, and honesty. He had a lot of interesting stories and examples to make real world connections with the class. If you can take bio11A with him, do it! He's super passionate, funny, and caring. His lectures are heavy but so interesting! If you review and study all the materials thoroughly, the exams should be pretty straightforward.

Amazing person and profesor overall. The lectures are very engaging and they help you understand the material very easily. The practice exams and the reviews are very helpful so study those when doing his exams. The essays he makes you do, have a meaning... Just trust the process especially because of the feedback from him.

Shoutout to Professor Olsen all my homies love Professor Olsen, he was genuinely so caring about my well-being when I was heavily depressed. He is hilarious and the lab parts of his class are so fun. I would love to take his class again, genuinely would take his class again.

Not an easy class, however what he lectures in class will be on the exam. Most of the questions are application critical thinking. Make sure you watch his lecture videos and revise your notes to your understanding. Be sure to learn as you go and don't cram your studies. Biology is a class where you can't procrastinate. Super helpful in office hours

There are teachers that do the bare minimum to collect a check, and there are pillars of the community who wholeheartedly engage with their students and care about their learning and success. Mr. Olsen is unquestionably the latter. Please take his classes, you'll be glad you did.

This course was difficult, but Professor Olsen is truly so caring and has several opportunities for you to get help outside of class! As long as you study the review guides and do the homework, you're golden! I am so grateful to have been one of his students, and would take his class again if I could! I took his class way back in Fall 2022 and I still remember how much of a positive impact Professor Olsen and his class had on me. I got sick with Covid-19 and it caused me to be 2 weeks behind but he was very flexible and caring about my situation and managed to a B in his class by the end. Biology was very difficult for me however Olsen was great at explaining everything in an easily digestible way. Lectures were always fun and he made it very entertaining! READ THE BOOK! Lecture notes were helpful but reading the book and understanding all concepts is crucial.

I thoroughly enjoyed the course! Olsen deeply cares about his student's success; providing ways to access him out of class, review slides/study guides, replacing 1 exam with the final & a EC opportunity. But definitely commit time (tutoring, reviewing) for the course to avoid falling behind and feeling confused on exams.

Okay, I got a low C but he is honestly the most involved professor I've ever experienced. He's an amazing teacher and his grading system is how I barely passed. There are lots of assignments so if you just do them you can do your best on the exams. You also get help on exams from people in class. during the group phase of the exam. Appreciate him!

Olsen really prides himself on connection with students & supporting everyone as best he can - take the support as much as possible. His lectures are dense bc the subjects are often very dense so reading the textbook will be helpful. I appreciate that he stays objective in support & respects boundaries. His classes are challenging but rewarding!

This was the best class I took at Fresno City. He teaches in a way that's easy to learn. He made me want to switch my major to play biology. You can't miss any lectures though it's easy to fall behind.
