esay byt very boring
I've taken him for 2 classes, Phil r art was great, enviro ethics, bad-talks about himself too much. I had to learn most on my own and lots or reading, but not too bad. Pretty easy to get an A.
The class would have been benefical if the teacher knew how to teach. He talks about himself...we listened to music....horrible chalkboard scratching music...do not waste your time...If you must...then make sure to go to his off hrs. too many 10 pg papers.
i liked mr. peffer. I think hes great. Do the readings and youll do great.
What a terrible terrible teacher/class. 200+ pgs of reading per week, you have to read it, copy down on a notecard, and then regurgitate in on random pop quizzes. Class consists of him talking about himself and accomplishments. Text-book is awful. Don't take, he should be fired.
really easy, just do your stuff!
Phil of Art was really really easy. He assigned lots of reading, but you never had to do it. Go to class, take a nap, and pull out some BS paper and a presentation that focused on any one thing in the readings, and you will be golden. I only opened the book once. This prof. is a serious wack job!
The most boring teacher ever. Made no sense. It's ashame teachers can be tenured so easily.
he da man
Dr. Peffer is a horrible teacher. He doesn't know how to teach instead he just talks about himslef the whole class period and assigns his own work for us to read. He should not be teaching at this institution. I pay too much to go here to have a teacher like this. I read more than half of the assignments and did not learn anything because of his la
Humorous guy and you watch movies every week. Quizzes are easy (I'm not sure if he actually reads them). Just do well on your term papers, fairly easy class.
Peffer is chill as hell! he knows his**** - he is a very well respected philosopher. Dont listen to these reviews by people who wanted to take an easy zone out phil class, they are probably republicans anyways. If you care about people or the environment take it for sure!! Life changing!
Peffer is a cool guy and the movies we watch are interesting, but the readings are some of the dryest cat vomit I have ever had to look at. The quizzes are very stupid.
Hated this class. No lecture plans. Eats and leaves during classes. Long papers. Sucky all around.
HORRIBLE. Took him over intercession and he assigned the same amount of reading to his ever day class for 3 weeks to his once a week class for 3 months. Some nights we had 150 pages to do with random pop quiz the next day. Really boring, I'm actually writing this in his class. Out of the 20 people in here only 3 aren't on laptops surfing facebook.
Lots of reading but good reading--very practical and current information. Dr. Peffer is a great guy, helps students and uses everything from readings to current events to videos to teach students. Good approach. Be sure to read and work hard. Expects a lot of work but grades fairly. Definitely a good class.
I took him for Environmental Ethics. Easy Easy class. But also, informative, and educational. Quizzes are essay style, just act like you know, and write a lot, and you will pass every quiz!Big paper due at the end of the summer session, but worth it. With Environmental issues as real probelms in this world, this class is very important. Great Guy!
Illegitimate love child of The Simpson's comic store guy and a vengeance-seeking Granola Eater. Grades with great difficulty, especially those taking his class P/F. Leaves classes to get "forgotten material" in his office, and comes back with fast food...and this happens everyday.
This was not my favorite class. His lectures make no sense, I think he comes just to chat. The reading can be interesting but you have a lot of quizzes and the papers are long.
He does not plan out his lectures at all before class (if he does it does not show), shows up unprepared and leaves class often for long periods of time only to return with food. Such worthless lectures students frequently get up and walk out en masse. Class is a joke but remeber the grade is not and he grades hard and strictly on quantity.
Dr. Peffer is one of the best professors I have had: intelligent, interesting, accomplished, & humorous. I highly recommend him. He doesn't "talk about himself all the time" but he does have students read & discuss some of his publications & asks for feedback on his work. He only left class to run errands when showing a video he had already seen.
do not take this class. He is an incredible egomaniac, you will read 20 pages of his essays each week. He does not even care if anyone is listening and there is 100 pages of reading each week that you will need to know. Only upside is you can do work for other classes cause he does not care if anyone listens.
Most useless class, a waste of my time and money. I did not learn anything and I was bored out of my mind 95% of the time. Don't take it unless you want to read too much, and be bored too often.
I sit in his class and I wonder when he will stop talking. It is supposed to be Environmental Ethics but it has turned into his rantings about why we must turn to communism. I have never done this much busy work. the entire class is either rating him poorly or on facebook.
I am a senior at USD with a 3.7. This IS THE WORST teacher at USD I have ever had, BY FAR! He is late to class, leaves class periodically to get cheeseburgers to eat in front of us when we take quizzes. He will talk for the full 3 hour class with out a breath besides to down cola. He is so arrogant, and speaks about how great he, and his writings R
Let me break it down for ya'll.. He lectured on BattleStar Gallactica for nearly 3 hours
This is a useless class that ill only bring down your GPA. He assigns an INSANE amount of reading and then tests you on it each class session. Going to a class is a waste of time and no one learns anything. It speaks volumes that he has a bell on his desk that he rings to wake people up....
he's pretty quirky, but he REALLY knows his stuff. seriously, he knows everything...not sure how he retains it all. copious amounts of reading is rough, plus his lectures are sporadic. but if you bring a computer and type fast, you can get it all down. overall good course
He is the worst Professor ever. I took him for a class this summer and seriously that worst decision of my life. He does not make ANY sense, you can't even read anything he writes. You learn nothing. Class is a complete waste of time. He expects you to write these huge term papers after learning nothing from him. Do not take him!!!!!!!!!
Don't take him. Went to class everyday and learned nothing. Most people sat there on their laptops while he scribbled on the board. It's incredibly hard to learn anything from him, and his readings don't follow lecture. The papers you have to write are pretty lengthy, although most likely not graded. I would not recommend him!
Dr. Peffer has 10 lifetimes worth of knowledge!! Individuals looking for the traditional educational structure... this class might not be for you. Peffer's teaching strategies are based entirely off our questions and perspectives to the assigned readings. My overall opinion-- He's the chillest and most understanding professor on campus.
Dr. Rodney G. Peffer is an OUTSTANDING Professor! His depth of knowledge and understanding of the ethics of war & peace is unparalleled. Dr. Peffer is completely objective. He doesn't care about what your position is on a paper, he just cares if you can logically defend as well as back up your position. I highly recommend enrolling in his courses.
Dr. Peffer is really an amazing Professor. Make sure you do the assigned readings, and you will be aptly prepared for his courses. I feel that most of the negative post here related to Dr. Peffer are from students who did not do the readings or apply themselves because Dr. Peffer is Phenomenal Professor. He is always there to help you. Great Class!
i will say taking his notes is quite a challenge!!! but he loves what he does, hes very knowledgable and when i had a family emergency he was so nice about letting me make up the film.he cares about what you think and is very objective. The material was hard but im in no way an art person or philosophy person.hard subject, nice prof, cool class.
This class was literally the worst class I have ever had. Peffer did not discuss anything worth listening to, he was completely unorganized, and ended up assigning a ton of work at the end of the semester because he forgot. Leaves class, irrelevant movies, and grades really hard on the readings that are 150+ pages a week. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS.
Peffer is literally the worst professor I have ever had. Completely unorganized, was more than 30 minutes late to class everyday and made you wait for him, didn't talk about anything useful, and only made us read his writings. Stay far away from this guy. He's horrible.
The teaching style was sporadic and random, but if you pay attention and do all the readings (which admittedly there are a lot of) you'll find the class can shift your perspective. There weren't exams, papers instead, and reading quizes. It wasn't my favorite class, but I do feel I learned a lot.
Peffer's class changed my life. He is great because he realizes pure philosophy can often be boring at times, so he supplements the class with outside sources- hence the videos, Art, etc. If you have an open mind and actually want to learn amazing things that will shift your perspective, TAKE THIS CLASS.
In the beginning of the semester, I would freak out because he would assign so much reading. Yet, he never really went over that in class, infact I don't think he even looked at what he assigned. If you write a paper for his class, just agree with everything he says, since almost everything you read is written by him anyways.
worst class/ professor ever. completely disorganized. complete waste of time and money. plus he is a really harsh grader. don;t give you own opinion just agree with him
His lectures are very boring and painful to sit through. he gives attendance points at the end of class to make you stay the whole time. There are no exams, only two essays. He isn't that hard of a grader, just start early and make sure you cover everything he asks for. Easy A if you avoid procrastinating the essays.
worst professor at this school. stay away
Dr. Peffer is very knowledgeable and passionate about his subject matter. I learned a ton in his class and will forever look at art in a different way!
Dr. Peffer is very knowledgeable and passionate about his subject matter! This class forever changed the way I look at art.
Worst professor at USD. Extremely lazy, just puts on a movie and leaves the room to get dinner, which he proceeds to eat in front of the class. Mostly assigns his own work as readings, must be the most conceited person in the world to hear his own opinions regurgitated in the papers. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Dr. Peffer is a very kind, interesting man. Do not sign up for this course expecting an easy A, however you will learn a lot about art along with philosophy. If you are interested in either or both the class will be interesting. Again, he is one of the nicest teachers I have had, and knows what he is talking about. Easy final.
DON'T take him!!! only if you want to fail the class.
There is a lot of reading for the course, but Peffer is very knowledgable and helpful if you are confused. Most of the people who don't like him simply don't show up to class or prepare and then complain about their poor grades and blame him. There is a lot of work to do but I learned a lot in this course and would definitely take his course again.
I had a great experience. The class had a lot of readings each week with pop quizzes. Write something down for quiz and get most credit. If you do most of the readings and take notes you will help yourself later for writing for midterm and final essay. No final exam. Just papers. I learned a lot of really awesome and interesting topics.
His class requires a lot of reading, but the material is pretty interesting, so it is not hard if you pay attention. Make sure you attend class and get ready for pop quizzes. Class consisted of quizzes, two papers, video notes and attendance. Overall it was not an easy class because of the amount of reading, but an interesting one for sure.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Peffer's lectures are lengthy, difficult to follow, and don't relate to the paper assignments. He covers the white board with illegible notes that are impossible to read. The only major grade is two term papers that are 10-15 pages and pure summary of his own essays. Again, do not take this class, you'll regret it.
Do not take this class. It is brutal. Took it for Summer course. Awful. He talks the entire time about nothing, all the information is in the readings. Nice man, but class was brutal to get through.
Worst class I took at USD. Peffer is extremely disorganized, He arrives late to the majority of classes (like 10-20 min). He is a tough grader and focuses on quantity over quality for papers. His lectures are all over the place. Topics come up at random (no fluidity). I (learned nothing remotely interesting or useful.
When I say "so many papers" I mean 2 papers, one 12-15 pages and the other 20 pages (midterm and final paper). He is a nice man, but he just drones on and on about things that don't make sense and his ideas are very scattered and hard to follow along with. If you like to
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Environmental ethics could have been so interesting but Peffer is literally the WORST TEACHER EVER. He assigns way to much reading - most of which is written by himself. The essays you have to write for this class are 15-20 page summaries of his own writings. He breathes really loud during pop quizzes in a concerning way.
I think says a lot about USD that they let this man teach here, and that's really disappointing. Just don't do it, it's seriously not worth it. I'm convinced that stepping into his classroom puts you in a dimension where time moves 4x slower than the rest of the world. Nice enough guy, just doesn't know how to teach a class that helps people learn.
I never write reviews for professors which goes to show how much I believe Dr. Peffer has wasted my time and my money. An environmental ethics class is such an opportunity for class discussion and interactive learning but instead the way Peffer decides to teach is completely non-beneficial to anyone but himself.
Ive never had a worse professor, Avoid this prof. at all cost. I wrote 18 pages on a paper that only needed 12, and was marked down to a C with the only criticism being I did not write enough. Refuses to tell students why they are marked down. Grading is entirely subjective.
This is the worst teacher I have had at USD. Has you write two papers for env ethics, most of which is on his writing and critiques. His grading is subjective and class time is wasted by his ramblings. Theres no teaching and no class discussion.
Peffer is a nice guy, but he would assign an insane amount of readings per class and give pop quizes that consist of him displaying the syllabus on the board and asking for a detailed summary of each reading. The real difficulty came from his papers one 10-15 and one 20 - he gave us a 6 page long prompt for them, he expects u 2 no info not discused
Coming from a junior college into this professor's class was awesome. He is so knowledgeable about environmental ethics and invites you to thoroughly delve into the topic. I think the people who rate him poorly are unfamiliar with being flexible when it comes to different teaching styles. We watch videos, have pop quizzes and have rad discussions.
Good prof. Cares about students. Asks for feedback. I like how we talk and get points for videos outside of class. We learn and engage more and better.
NEVER TAKE THIS CLASS! Literally the WORST professor ever! He's VERY political, never stops sharing his opinions. As a Catholic/Christian Republican attending a Catholic college, it was difficult to be targeted for my opinions. All papers are opinion based and only 1 of them had some philosophy. He doesn't believe in God&hated me bc I do
Ton of reading & pop quizzes. All he does is ramble and put movies on during class. Very subjective grader. Probably the worst class/professor I've taken at USD. Really not sure how there are any 4 or 5-star reviews. Regret not dropping this class, so if you're thinking about dropping this course, do it.
His lectures were boring but the assignments were easy.
lenient on due dates but disorganized and unfocused. The videos we have to watch are such low quality and lack credibility, its hard to take it seriously. Papers are on average 8 pages but include the prompt, so be ready to write. Textbook is nowhere to be found. He just talks for hours and easily goes on tangents.
Dr. Peffer is very passionate about what he teaches and it comes across in his lectures. He is an easy grader as long as you follow instructions. He is also very considerate about due dates and if you turn something in a little late, he doesn't mind. The content was definitely hard to understand at times but he always answers questions to clarify.
Most "reading" are Word docs of his opinion, rambling, poorly written paragraphs that make little or no sense. Tons of posted stuff that does not help in any way. Strange papers prompts that make little or no sense. No rubrics, no feedback at all for very low grades. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! You will not learn anything and your GPA will be ruined.
Added four essays in last 3 weeks of class that absolutely wrecked my final exam study schedule. He posts weird / strange essays and is very political and not in the good way. When you read his papers, you find out he just wants to be right, not necessarily teach intro philosophy. Go take Nevitt or Hamilton-bleakley or anyone else really.
Do not take this professor, even if he is your last choice. He is so unclear about his expectations for you and it makes it very difficult when trying to complete his papers (which he expects to be around 10 pages each). If I could sum him up in one situation, it would be that he gave us the Spring 2022 syllabus in the fall without realizing. No
Dr. Peffer seems like a nice man, but not the greatest professor. Majority of papers were about politics as well as in class videos. No tests which is good, but many papers which he gives no feedback to. You will fail if you don't show up to class since 40% of the grade is video notes and attendance. No structure to class and it is a tough class.
Very disorganized. He's passionate about philosophy but he never explains why he grades you the way he did unless you directly ask him. Rambles a lot and there isn't a structure to what he teaches. I feel like I only did well on assignments if I agreed with his perspective/essays; there is no reason a 100 class should be this difficult. Avoid pls
Professor Peffer is a nice and understanding guy but is overly political. I refuse to write essays for a guy who had a rubric with the title "Views I Will Accept." Rather hold on to my principles. Blatant intellectual dishonesty. I will have to retake the class with someone else who will actually teach intro to philosophy and not "why Trump is bad"
It's fairly easy to get above a 90 on the 4-5 papers as our only homework, as long as you meet the length requirements, but the 3 hour classes DRAG, you can't even take notes the way he sets up his lectures, i doubt i'll learn anything this semester about philosophy when all he talks about is how the 2020 election WASNT rigged
This dude is a chill guy but isn't good at teaching his lectures. He kind of rambles on for 3 hours and scribbles on the board. Its hard to pay attention and keep track of what he's talking about for such a long time, and it is very disorganized. I learned more about politics than about actual philosophy. Take a different teacher!
I only had his class for one day and I knew to drop it immediately; If you've found yourself in the same situation, get out now. Long, boring lectures the entire time. Didn't address his students, just talked to himself and wrote nonsense on the board the entire time.
There is not enough room to explain or express my feelings about this professor. In a philosophical class, there is no reason to express your political opinions for half of the class's units. He grades the 6 essays he assigns solely on political and personal beliefs as well. If you do not align with what he portrays you will not pass this class.
do not take this class, all he really does is talk about how he doesn't like trump and he assigns so many ridiculously long essays.
Please, for the love of God, do not take a class with this man. He assigned three 8-15-page papers the last few weeks of class (that's a minimum of 24 pages total), making it impossible to make them actually good with all the studying for other courses. Lectures are nonsensical and make no sense. It's actually sad that he is a professor at USD.
late night class
Even though I followed all of his instructions and completed everything perfectly, I still received my first C ever. He refused to explain why or provide any comments. He also hates Trump.
Please do not take this professor. Possibly the worst I have ever experienced. Save yourself the time and work, and join a different Philosophy class. I don't know how the guy is still allowed to teach at such a prestigious university.
DO NOT TAKE
Do not take this professor, not helpful via email and just straight up rude when you try to talk to him outside of class
so easy but super long. just sit and listen to him hate on trump and write your papers in his favor and you will make an A
