Great teacher. He actually takes time to teach. The class is easy for an accounting class, but only because he's a good teacher.
Made everything very easy to learn, and remember.
Hard tests, grades tough too
Very difficult teacher
I like his style of teaching. His notes are very clear and easy to understand. His tests are difficult so make sure you study hard!
If you take AIF, taking it from Rodney is a MUST. GTA's just can't teach as well as him, plus he writes the tests so he knows exactly what will be on it.
Can tell he cares about his students and wants them to succeed. Very difficult tests, but just study the packet, homework, and quizzes. Best acctg teacher I've had.
good teacher
Rodney is a good professor that you'll learn alot from BUT you'll definately have to work hard for it.
great teacher
Rodney is such a great teacher! He is very helpful and funny. He complained about not being rated very high in the "hotness" category during class so I thought I would help out his rating a little. haha
Rodney's a great teacher, you will have to work hard but you will learn a lot.
I thought AIF would be more difficult than ABO, but it isn't. Rodney is a great professor. He tells you exactly what you need to study and is very helpful. Attendance is only slightly mandatory, but it's a good idea to attend every class so you don't get behind.
It took me until after the first test to get used to his teaching style but I grew to like him. Like these other comments say, you will definitely have to work for the grade you want.
Pretty straightforward and easy teacher!
I did not like the class at all. The tests were EXTREMELY difficult. When approaching him to ask a question he is very cranky. He could care less about the grade you receive. I put an extreme amount of effort into this class. I wouldn't recommend him.
He's helpful! It takes time to get used to his teaching style and tests! Tests are fair game. He tells what you need to study for the tests. you don't need to study a lot from the textbook. His tests mostly come from the notes and packets!
Nice guy. Went in before every test to get help, the questions he asked were basic, but the ones on the test were much harder. He also docs points off your test if you want to see what you got wrong on it.
Great teacher. Knows his stuff and tries to throw in a little humor. Overall very effective teacher.
The hardest teacher I have ever had. Horrible at explaining concepts at an understandable level. I have yet to hear someone say they're doing well in his class. An EXTREMELY HARD CLASS. Don't take it from him choose a different instructor!!!!
Terrible. Hard to pay attention. Very boring class
Difficult class if you get behind. Explains things pretty well. Would defiantly recommend this teacher.
HE IS TERRIBLE. The test are awful and he is just a rude person. I have to retake in my senior year, last semester because he gave me a d because I was gone for a week with my job.
I'm by no means a perfect student, but I legitimately gave it my best and I got an A. Its more about how hard your willing to try. It was dull to start but if you get his sense of humor he's pretty funny and a laid back guy.
Awful prof who doesn't care about his students. Went to his office hours as often as I could, did all of the homework, and went to class everyday. Will have to retake the class later to improve GPA. Tests consist of finding particular digits in each calculation (say the thousands place in a hundred thousand answer). Expect tears and stress.
Rodney is pretty funny if you get his sense of humor. He has a more hands off approach when it comes to teaching. I sat there most the time confused and really had no idea what I was doing until I would go home and my boyfriend would clarify for me. Wish he was a little more helpful in class. Overall if you show up and study hard you'll do fine.
Rodney is the man. He's pretty funny if you're into dry humor. His classes go by pretty quickly, and I took the 8 week course. He offers plenty of help--but his tests are very difficult. You have to study, and many times over study, to make sure that you have all of the material--but it's straight from his pre-written notes.
He is a decent Teacher. You do have to learn some things on your own and he expects you to be pretty good at the stuff you've already learned in ABO and AIF. Lectures are short and not much homework. Be prepared for the tests and know what you are doing and you will get a good grade.
Terrible teaching skills. He doesn't ever look up from the floor so anyone who raises their hand never gets a chance to ask questions. Also has a lot of annoying ticks like tapping on his desk, drumming on stuff, etc. He just skims over his own notes and never actually explains what any of it means so good luck learning anything.
Very tough class. The lab part of the class "packet" is very time consuming. Start working on it ASAP and get it out of the way.
He really knows his subject. His notes are easy to follow and he's always willing to help a student if they have questions.
331 is a difficult class but I definitely recommend taking it with Rodney. He makes sure you know what the important material is and doesn't waste your time with busy hw assignments. Most of your grade comes from the 6 exams (plus final) but he shows you how to study for them. He is interested in his students' success and is a great teacher!
Talks like a robot, rude, embarresses students who don't know the answer
He teaches the class like it's a review course. This makes keeping up with the new material difficult. Instead of working problems for the class he has you look at an already solved problem and then moves on. If you're not an A student get ready for a failing grade. Multiple people are taking the class again next semester with a different teacher.
Im in the class Acctg. 241, and it is one of the hardest class I have ever taken. Sadly Rodney will never show you how to do anything, if you are a visual learner I suggest you change classes quick. He doesn't know how to use a business calculator so if you learned on those like I did, good luck. Im usually an A student and I still can't pass.
Rodney is a great teacher. Probably one of my top 2 at K-State as I'm finishing my junior year. The fact of the matter is for most business majors, Accounting is one of those classes you just have to get the B/C in and move on. But he always is willing to help, you always get out of class early, and his dry sense of humor makes going to class fun.
He is not organized what so ever in the presentation of the material in class and outside of class. He frequently stares out the window into the vast nothingness that has become of his life and talks quietly to the glass while expecting you to understand his binary coded notes. Be prepared to be singled out for not knowing the correct answer.
Rodney Vogt is by far one of my favorite accounting professors at KSU. His style of teaching is very straightforward and he never tests over anything that hasn't been discussed in the lectures. He can be intimidating at first, but he is a very nice person once you get to know him.
Very difficult. Makes it more of a review class than a learning class. He expects you to basically know things after only seeing them once. Tests are very hard.
I had a T.A for 241 but Rodney wrote all of the tests. The material in the packet is sometimes not very clear and written poorly. Also I hated the way he wrote tests, instead of asking for an exact number, he asks for one of the digits in the answer which makes the tests confusing.
As long as you pay attention in class and take advantage of the classwork time you should be fine. I loved his teaching style because instead of just showing you how to do things and lecturing, he devoted a lot of class time to review and working through problems. He is also very straightforward about what will and will not be on the exams.
RODNEY IS THE BEST. If you take his class seriously, then you'll enjoy the material and Rodney as a person. His humor is very very dry, which I loved. You'll get out of class early most days, as he allows you to leave once you get an answer correct to a problem. Took me a little bit to get used to the organization, but I enjoyed his class a lot!!
Completely disorganized during his lectures and in his packets. He seems less concerned with actually teaching us the material and more concerned with "being able to do better than your classmatrs, working harder." I'm sure as an accountant he's good, but he's awful as a teacher.
A lot of people have a bad view of Rodney, and I can understand that. I took his night class which was a 9 week class and I loved it. Rodney has a teaching style where it's impossible to not learn what he's teaching. If you participate in his style of teaching, you will get a good grade. I HIGHLY suggest his 9 week class!
His style of teaching can't even be considered teaching. Vogt skims over material and doesn't explain the content at all. You will have to rely on outside help for this class if you take it with him, i guarantee that!
His tests can be tough because there isn't enough time to work slowly on the problems. As a teacher he gives you the tools to learn but doesn't directly show you how to work things. It is effective, but you have to come to class ready to learn. This class isn't a cakewalk, but if you put forth effort an A is achievable. Would take Vogt again.
I took Vogt for 241 and 331. Got an A in 241 and ended up with a B in 331 but put in a TON of study hours for this class. There are several professors that teach 331, but I definitely think Vogt is the best option. In my opinion, 331 is so difficult due to the shear volume of material that they are required to cover. Glad it's over, good luck!
Easily one of the best teachers in the Business School if not the University. If you have no interest in Finance or Accounting or you're a straight A student in an easy major you'll hate his classes. If you show up and pay attention and ask questions you'll be just fine. He does require you to have solid understanding of previous classes.
Rodney is a tough professor, but I have never learned as much in my life. He pushes his students and is very accessible out of class and is happy to help any of his students out. You have to put in a lot of work, but you can tell he wants all of his students to succeed farther than just the course. Great teacher
a wanna be accounting teacher or even a teacher.
Financial Statement Analysis is a very interesting class and Rodney makes this a fun and easy class. You are only graded on a few tests and assignments but they are easy if you study and pay attention. Would recommend this class to anyone majoring in finance or accounting.
This is a very tough class and you have to put in a lot of work outside of class to do well. Charland also teaches the course but Rodney is definitely the easier option of the two. You have to practice the recommended problems on the syllabus outside of class if you want to do well.
For reference, I took Rodney's 8-week 241 class. Rodney is an AMAZING teacher. Willing to help you outside of class and is pretty humorous. During class he would have you pull out a piece of paper and quiz you (not graded). I used this as a form of study guide - as most of it was tested. I've never studied more for a class, but worth it in the end
Rodney is by far my favorite teacher I've had during my time at K-State. I took him for both 241 and 331 and you will not find a teacher that is more invested in his students. 331 is extremely difficult but it's clear he cares about every student's success. One of the best in my opinion, I just wish he taught more classes for the accounting dept.
Rodney does not post anything on canvas all year not even a syllabus, i'm pretty sure test grades are 90% of your grade but i'm not sure because I couldnt find the syllabus anywhere. I took his class which met every Tuesday Thursday for which was supposed to be an hour and fifteen minutes long but everyday we left 15-20 minutes early, money wasted.
Rodney is a great teacher but his dryness throws non-accounting people off. He explains it in a more simple way than the book. Read the book and do the problems before we do them in class because they are not for a grade and help you learn the material. No real homework and 5 tests. I thought the class was easy if you study. #ILoveRodneyVogt
If you're shocked that I'm giving Rodney I great review, then I'm shocked.
Not an accounting major? Don't even bother with this class. If you're not used to finances or accounting, you won't do well. The packet that he wrote has no sort of table of contents, clear sentence structure, or really any structure at all. Not helpful at all
His attendance policy is ridiculous. It's written like some form of an odd game.
Best teacher I've had at kstate hands down. I want to take 331 just so I can have rodney as a teacher again
Pretty much a hard class, but if you go you can pass. You just got to put in a lot of extra work if you end up with him.
He is a fine teacher but he doesn't do a good job of teaching the subject matter. You need to read the notes/problems before you go to class so you know what is happening. He just tells you what you need to know for the test without explaining it.
I knew coming into this class that it would be difficult, but the way Rodney teaches it makes it 100x more difficult. Barely any specific style of teaching besides "look at the problem on the board".."okay now look at the answer key." NO teaching whatsoever! A good guy and will help you if you see him office-wise, but will never take again. Ever.
He does random attendance and usually when not many people come to class. He doesn't really teach the material. He more just gives you the problem then 10 seconds later gives you the answer and you have to figure it out later. Not very helpful for someone who doesn't understand. Take it with someone else if you can, but be prepared to study if not.
One of the nicest professors at K-State. I would recommend taking him for 331 if you took 241 with him. If you did not take 241 under Rodney you might want to try a different professor as it takes a while to get used to his teaching style. Overall, each test requires a lot of studying but the material is not too difficult.
Best professor I've had. THE BEST THING THAT CAN HAPPEN IS UTTER FAILURE AND WE FIX IT. If you're shocked, I'm shocked.
"Outwork your neighbor, outwork your friend" If ACCTG is not your strong suit, this class will be very difficult. He teaches as if people already understand ACCTG and doesn't break down the material, so if that's not your style DON'T take him. If you are looking for an ACCTG231 teacher, take Dr Wilkinson!! But 241, good luck... Only graded on tests
241 is extremely hard if you are not an ACCTG major. With the COVID-19 online classes we got to use notes and all resources on the exams. I am a straight-A student, and I still got C's and D's on all of them. Doesn't break down the material at all, have to teach yourself everything, not a helpful teacher. Good luck.
Rodney is AMAZING! He makes you work during class, which means you do less homework and less cramming for exams. He cares about K-State students and teaches the RIGHT way. Study for exams and you'll be fine! I am not an accounting major, but I paid attention in class and did well. Hard to find professors like Rodney Vogt. -ps this was during COVID
I had Rodney for one of the 8 weeks period classes and OOF is all I have to say. Since that class is shorter, there is a lot more work and the tests are almost backtoback. The classes were little under two hours long and it's just Rodney lecturing while we take notes. It's fast-paced and not for those who do not understand accounting, like myself.
Professor Vogt should be your last choice for this class. All he does in lectures is read straight from the notes. I had friends in this class who had TAs and halfway through the semester I just started going to their classes rather than his.
This class was the hardest, worst-taught class I have ever been in on-campus (this is my junior year too). I believe he is a good guy just terrible at teaching.
The way he teaches and presents information is by far the least enjoyable out of any professor I have seen. A lot of the content you must figure out on your own, as he reads off of his notes and does not give you time to actually understand the material. Test questions are meant to be tricky and oddly worded.
Accounting is going to be tough with anyone you take, but Rodney is a good professor to take it with. He provides his own examples for key points for the exam, and is very thorough. If you go to class, you'll better understand his thought process, and the tests will be easy. If you don't, it can be challenging to go from the textbook to his tests.
If you took his 241 class, this class will be fairly straightforward and simple. He's a good professor. I'd watch out for the third exam, it's probably the most difficult.
He gave me an F and He did not hold a single class the entire semester. Learned absolutely nothing wish I could rate him in the negatives.
Very nice guy and seems to care but I never felt very prepared heading into the test. I would go to other teacher's review sessions just to try and catch up on the material he left out.
I'm an accounting major and this is the worst teacher I've ever had. Expects you to know everything as you walk through the door, he fails to teach or review any topics. He doesn't know how to teach, he'll say something once and expect you to know how to do it, and never takes the initiative to help. Studied for an exam for 30+hrs to receive a 50%.
He's not easy and I get why people don't like this class but if you allow him, he will be one of the best teachers you'll get. Bottom line if you want easy take someone else if you actually want to really understand the concepts being taught take Rodney.
Been in the class for a week and can already tell this class is going to be rough..
Exams account for almost all of your grade. He does not teach just uses notes that were made over 20 years ago.
Show up to class. Skipped around 4-5 times and received 0/15 for attendance.
Overall is a really bad professor 3/10. He does not teach, neither explain anything, for some reason he never shows how to solve an exercise, but expects you to know. He stands there to tell you what is going to come up on the test. Test are designed, for you to run out of time. So sad to say, that he fails as a professor in the most basic stuff.
You will have to study for the exams if you want to do good in the class. Pay attention to what he says in class, because he will emphasize if something is going to be on the exam. Four in-class exams, one online (but in-class) comprehensive final. It will take time to get used to his teaching style, but overall is a good guy.
Be ready to study for the tests; they are hard. During lectures he only hits the high points and expects you to read the book and do the practice problems in the WileyPLUS book. He makes sure to give time during class to practice on some of the more difficult concepts. Do not consider Professor Charland for 331; take it with Vogt.
My all time favorite professor. He's very clear in his notes. He will mention over and over again what will be on the exam. His practice problems and homework are very similar to the exams. The exams aren't hard if you attend class and comprehend the material. Overall such a great guy and his dry humor is hilarious.
I found Rodney to be a fairly lazy instructor, who didn't teach the concepts well enough and then gave us unnecessarily difficult tests. Even with having As on every assignment and having perfect attendance, I couldn't achieve the grade I wanted in this class, because the tests were just so difficult even after studying a lot. Wouldn't recommend.
This class is completely different than any of the others taught by Mr. Vogt. In 445, the tests are open note and the lab assignments are done in class nearly every Thursday. Highly recommend.
