Professor Valle is a remarkable human being! His class is very interesting. I highly recommend to take his class. He is very passionate about the Chicago topic.
He was a good professor however he did not have a set schedule on lectures and would just pick a topic to lecture on so they were vague. About 3 tests but they were open book. Ended with an A but didn't learn a lot.
Great teacher!! Very passionate about his job and this subject. May come on a bit strong at first but he is funny and cares about your education and be prepare to write a lot of papers. But none the less great class and awesome teacher!! Highly recommend him!!! Thanks profe!
El Profe is by far the best teacher in Chicano Studies. He is so passionate about his profession. Lots of stories from his experience, and very honest. Word of advice do not drop his class when he assigns papers. Do them, and trust me it will pay of at the end. Thanks Profe for letting me get a chance to talk with Mr. Camacho his a cool guy.
Prof. Valles is passionate about what he teaches. Be expected to write 5 pages each for 3 assignment papers. He just gives long lectures but i did not learn anything from his class. He also expects to study an Art mural picture and present it to the class at least 5 mins or more(not much to talk about) take Prof. Briceno I got an A in his class.
Best professor out there! If your there for the trade forget it ! You have to be engaged as a student because there are loop holes around not doing his work and passing the class with an A! With that being said get to know your class because that's his main goal to be engaged as a community! You have to read if you don't figure out the loop holes!
Profe Rodrigo is the best professor! At the beginning I was scared by everything we were going to have to do for that class but he gives you all the assignments at the beginning of the semester so do everything with time! Some of his papers are 5 pages but he is only preparing us for the University level. Overall, is a great guy and there for you!
Rodrigo's goal is to get you ready for real life and to embrace not only your culture but yourself. He wants us to be active, aware, and fight for what is ours! He will break you but then take the time to help you get back together stronger and ready to get your life done and your community back. He gives you his heart and soul, he is super sexy!
He is amazing. Amazing lectures. Yes, there are a lot papers to do;however, he only wants to get you prepare for your college career. Freshmans, do your self a favor and take his course, you won't regret it. Once you take his class, you are ready to go through any class. If you really want to open you mind, take his class. He is there for you.
He is passionate about what he teaches. He is real with you from the start. His class is quite hard its definitely not an easy A but stick with it no matter how hard it gets. His goal is to unite us and get us to open our minds up. He really is there for you even after you pass his class. You wont find another like him!!
highly recommend this class for anyone who needs or anyone who wants know more about their culture to take Chicano Studies, its a unique class that you wont regret taking. by the end of the class you will know everyone & hopefully created a bond with them. El Profe is really passionate about what he teaches and really care about his student. (:
Profe has been one of the best professors I've ever had. I took him for both ethnic and chicano studies. He is very passionate about what he teaches and wants his students to learn. This is a class where the students leave with a whole lot of knowledge. However, prepare to do a lot of papers and debates.
Highly recommended, you'll learn something every class, the only way you wont learn is if you're not interested to learn. He does give papers and debates, but he's trying to prepare you for the future. He's the only professor that I respect. He is passionate about what he teaches, wants to make a difference. And he's really funny. I'm never bored.
Profe is very intense. He gets very emotional and passionate with everything he teaches. He really challanged me out of my comfort zone.
He's a really great person and cares a lot about his subject but the class structure is weird and disjointed, his lectures don't reference the textbook or required readings, you're kind of left to explore those on your own however those are supposed to be your source material for the very lengthy papers he wants you to write
*READ THIS* So I took his intro class to Chicano Studies and by far the most difficult class I have taken for a intro! He makes you do 4 papers and 4 debates, also one of those papers are 20 pages within with a group. Overall he's passionate about the subject and I did learn things about the Chicano culture, but gives an extreme amount of work.
Professor Valles is passionate about being a Chicano. Thats what made this class interesting. There were days I wanted to drop the class but I stuck through it and did all the assignments. Its a lot of writing, but he gives extra credit and take my word for it. Do the extra credit, itll help you in the end. Very difficult class but I got an A.
Many believe his class is hard because you have to write a lot (lol) in reality you only have 4 papers and 1 out of the 4 is in a group( just hope you dont get a group that likes to procrastinated) Otherwise if you participated and stay on top of the assignment its an easy A+. He gives a lot of easy extra credit that helps ALOT!!!!
Time management is the key to succeed in this class. The work is not hard but you need to do it. If you truly want to be woke and understand the real meaning of Chicana, then take this class. He gives you his heart and soul and helped me grow as a person like I never knew I could. He has my eternal gratitude and love. He is the Goat! Viva la Raza!
He is hands down the best professor at SAC. He is super caring and is truly here for the students. I've never met anyone as real as profe. I would highly recommend you take his class. Learn more about your history and culture with this amazing professor. His way of teaching is very unique, class is never boring. Viva la raza!
The goal of El Profe is to get you truly woke. He speaks truths you know but refuse to digest. He says "I will burst your bubbles, kill your hope, and crush your dreams". Trust that he does but as he says"I will make you better, stronger, and free of indoctrination/conditioning". He took me to another level, and for this I love him! Roll the dice.
Amazing teacher ! By far the most awesome teacher at SAC. The class is not hard, but time management is key. He gives you most of the homework for the semester the first day. So its all up to you. Hes Inspirational and talented. Even if you dont take his class hes always available to help you. I would take any class he teaches. Hes awesome.
He has us do 3 debates in total, in the beginning, I thought it wouldn' help me learn, but after he questioned our points and explained to us what we are missing really helped me to see how society really is from the past to the present. Also during his lectures, if we questioned him or told him how we feel about the lecture he will listen
Prof rambles about topics that have nothing to do with Chicano studies... was more interested in impressing us with stories about fights/jails than teaching. At some point in the term, he ran out of content, so he gave out tons of videos to watch and papers to write. The videos are more informative than his teaching, at least. Class was wack.
Being my first year at SAC, the Chicano Studies class was the one I always looked forward too. He is an amazing professor that you can relate to. He is funny, straightforward, and really chill. If you do your work you will pass, we mostly watched videos and only had one essay to do. We had lots of time to complete the work which was really good.
I would definitely take this class again. As long as you do the work, youll pass. Hes not a hard grader, he just cares that you understand the material and try. Very understanding and caring. Theres a lot of work to be done, but its not hard just time consuming.
I asked him for a two day extension on the homework because Im having internet issues and he told me to contact canvas and figure it out because he does not control the submission dates.
This is college, do the work you pass, don't you fail. There are due dates and requirements. Beast wants you to be accountable and present in your life. The class makes you think critically, be objective, connect, and apply or discard. Beast will be there now and after if you build the relationship. He is real and cares, but you must too.
You get to learn interesting information. A lot of writing in this class. Easy class if you turn in your all assignments and participate. Class can get repetitive. Professor can be abrasive but he says its for our own good. Overall class was ok.
I took both sections, ETHN and CHST. The class is real and raw, as is the professor. He comes off rough because he has been beaten up for caring too much. I have seen it and was there when it has happened from students and faculty. Accountability and time management are vital to the class. He holds my heart, and I am grateful for knowing him.
I took classes at SCC, CC, FC, and CSUF; I did not learn 1/4 of what I learned here. He is your professor, not your parent or partner. He has been burned bad by students and faculty for caring and being there for his students. He is a friend for life if you want it, no matter what grade you get. Be a student, which means you do the work; you pass.
I get that it's a concentrated summer class, but 5 papers per week is obnoxious when it feels as though I'm just repeating the exact same points week to week. Gives out YouTube videos with 50 minute runtimes like its candy. Easy class but disgustingly boring and monotonous. Just keep writing the same thing for easy A
Professor Valles is absolutely someone who cares about his students' success in both life and in education, and he makes it known! He is the realest person, and honestly the best professor I've ever had. Along with though provoking discussions, he imparts knowledge from his personal and educational experiences. Best professor, I highly recommend.
I dont recommend this class at all, it is all essays, and discussions, and if you dont do 1 thing he asks for he wont even look at it, I also strongly believe that he doesnt even read the papers. Ive written horrible essays that have gotten 100% just because I included all of the things he asked for, goodluck hes a horrible teacher.
Cares a lot about his class. Lots of long videos/lectures. Class gets progressively more difficult as time goes by. Homework wasn't difficult, just time consuming. Discussion boards are important, follow all directions. Lots of essays near the end of semester. Meeting requirements is more important than the contents of essay. Do all your work.
Professor is a joke, listen to all the negative comments. Dont listen to the good ones. Professor thinks hes the teaching his class well. All he does is assign discussion questions with 6 hours worth of videos. Hes not teaching anything. He grades as if he worked so hard on theassignments given. Would never take this class again. Dont regret it
This professor is a joke. He send a massive email saying all his students were sending him emails, phone calls, text messages, comments on assignments and even DMs saying the work load was excessive and he goes on a rampage basically saying we are babies. Clearly hes the problem. Dont take this class. Trust me!!
It makes you work; not easy but not hard; manage your time. Stay on top of instructions and requirements. Lots of good stuff to learn from, and Profe can be rough, but stick it out, and it will be worth it. It may be SAC, but Profe set it up to be a real challenge to question your motives and person. Please don' take anything personal cuz it's not.
Do not take this class from Rodrigo. He just uploads youtube videos and expects you to watch everything for that week in a few days. He doesn't accommodate for students either even if he has many students emailing him about the same issue. If you have a busy schedule, try to get a different professor.
Hes a horrible profesor do not listen to the good reviews ive had trouble with him all semester. Ive had a D all because i didnt meet one requirement one one essay and he gave me a zero. I went from a B to a D and cannot get it back up. He gives so much work and doesnt even read a single but of it he just check if we met his requirements horrible
worst experience in a class that I have ever had. professor does not respond to emails in a timely manner, offers zero to no feedback & doesn't even use original lessons. will take 7+ days to respond to you and won't even answer your question. Most of his lessons and homework are through PBS. unrealistic online class standards. going to report
Solid but tough professor, lots of homework but is simple to get through if you manage your time correctly and carefully read the criteria. Emphasis on carefully reading through instructions, profe took his instructions very seriously from my experience. Manage your time correctly, follow criteria, and try your best and you'll be fine, simple.
Do not take this class. You will be regret . If you busy life , this class absolutely not for you , you have to watch 5-10 movies per week ( 56 minutes per movie) then write the essay 4 page with 5 resources, and write , respond 3discussion . Make sure your write and 3 responses in 4 different days , if 2 of them the same day you got 1/3 points.
I am a Teacher and took the class for information. I understand the bad reviews, but they are misguided. All requirements are explained; make sure to read them. This class is impossible to fail if you take your time to click on the research essay page. As a teacher, I understand what Profe is doing. He cares, but you must be honest and sincere.
Discussion board 1-3 questions or 1-6 questions to write the paragraph(follow grade criteria),3 replies per day (Make sure u write only 1 post per day or 1 reply per day,and 3 responses in different days),research essay 5 pages APA format(Turnitin),no extra credit. There is a ton of video to watch & write the notes to apply to the discussion board.
Regret taking this class.
Class is fire with information! One discussion a week and one research paper is your total grade. You can do more than one research paper for extra credit. Lowkey, if you do all the research papers and nothing else, you can rock an "A" for the class. Follow instructions to the exact or lose major points and even no points. Profe is a good dude.
Beast has been the best professor at SAC in my ten years there. The class gives you everything you were never told and burns your soul after. Do three papers and still get an "A" in the class with nothing else. One discussion with three posts a week. You are graded overall by those assignments. Follow directions. I fell in love with him, no cap.
He does not offer you an opportunity to bring up your grade when you are super close on passing. You get what you get basically, and does not respond back to your msg on canvas. Even when you submit an assignment you that you completed and does not meet certain criteria, automatic 0. NO retakes or anything
Class is straightforward. Follow the instructions to the letter and read all requirements. Impossible to fail or get a bad grade. Complete all discussions and one research essay. If you bomb requirements/instructions and get low points, don't stress about it. You can complete all three research assignments for extra points and still get an A.
One post per day in discussions, including your answering the questions. So you must post over four days. One research assignment is required. If you don't do it, you can fail the class. You can do more research assignments for more points. Follow the grading scale in the syllabus, not what Canvas says. Rod is solid and has your back. Great Class!
Proff. Valles looks tough on the outside but is caring on the inside. His intersession class was fun. There were lots of videos to watch which can be time-consuming, but the final was not hard, & we had 3 prompts to choose from to write 1 research paper. His instructions may be strict but are simple, & if you follow them, then it's an easy A.
In Intersession 2023, the classwork got erased but was returned after two days, no biggie. Weekly discussion with four postings, all on different days, or lose points. One Research assignment, but you can write two more for points. Beast is genuine and cares deeply. This is college, not K-12, so handle or bounce.
I took the class in Inter23, and all our work was deleted. Profe worked hard and got it restored. Read instructions and follow them; nothing complicated. He cares a lot, and I would say too much, so students try to exploit him and give him a hard time. He is my friend and mentor for life. Connect with him for real, and he will do the same.
Profe is straightforward, as is the class. Took Intersession 23, click through the module area, and complete page requirements. Post once per day or reply once per day per assignment. Research assignments are there for extra points, so don't stress. READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS AND REQUIREMENTS! Profe will help you and be there for you but don't play.
showed me what a real college class is & the effort/time it takes. He's a harsh grader but then again all the instructions r given beforehand; really make sure to read every single instruction! Make sure to post your answer & 3 responses on separate days(4 days). 1 essay is mandatory, the rest is extra credit.the final explains everything. he cares.
I took this professor for an 8 week course, with that being said there were a fair amount of assignments but as long as you complete the assignments before the deadline you will be good. One essay assignment at the end of the course. He gives good feedback if you follow his instructions you will pass the class.
I took an eight-week course, SP23, and the class was painless. Follow all directions and read the instructions from top to bottom. Short-term is twice the work in half the time, two weekly discussions with only one post per day per assignment. One research essay is required, and a bomb final exam. Impossible to fail; do more reports for points.
ETHN 150 8-week for SP23, the class was informative and a breeze. If you like fast classes then take but it goes quickly, with two discussions a week with four replies per discussion on four different days. One research paper is required but two others can be done to bring up your grade. Impossible to fail this class unless you want to fail.
Short-term Spring 2023, the class is unfailable. Profe is a firme dude who is blunt, transparent, and real. Class information is vital in understanding different ethnic groups and is easy to follow, with all videos and no lecture. Put some thought into your work and follow instructions. Research essays are your safety net for any missing points.
Easy class with lots of extra credit. One discussion a week, one research essay, and free points final exam. I don't understand all the hate; Profe is fair; he took hours with me to help plan my transfer, figure out my major, and help me with the mental issues I was dealing with. Keep in mind one person's experience is theirs and not everyone's.
I needed this class for my CRED at CSUF, and it was as expected. Nothing different from what I take now. One weekly discussion, one research paper, and a final. Extra credit essays are available. If you can't do this class, you will struggle when transferring. No lectures, just videos you watch for discussions and papers.
Fantastic class with lots of information. Nothing complicated; do your weekly discussion as instructed. Complete your research essay as required. Extra credit is more than one research paper which is for full points. Beast is rock solid and straight up. Meet with him and connect for help or anything you need; he will have your back.
I needed this class for CE as a Nurse. Helped see others through a new lens. Being from Orange County, one often gets raised with a biased outlook. Rod helped me understand myself and the world around me. Complete the weekly discussion and your one research paper, and get an A. Rod is a trustworthy person and my friend for life.
Profe is GOAT! Counselors told me one thing: we spent hours getting me on the right path. He helped me figure out my SAC path, transfer path, and even my life issues. Class is your basic INTRO class; read instructions, meet the deadlines, and fulfill requirements. Do this, get an A, mess up, and do the extra research essays. Buena Suerte!
Straightforward class. Weekly discussions and one research paper are required. Read instructions for assignments or risk losing points. If you do, do extra research assignments. Rod's guidance opened my eyes to my authentic self and helped break cycles of self-sabotage. Facts are what he speaks, and love is what he gives and shares.
The class and information Beast provides shook me, and rewrote what EVERYONE taught me! Family, social media, and other profes spread false narratives; Beast gives you the hard facts. Beast's class prepped me for any class, profe, job, and life experience. Assignments are simple and to the point, but you must think critically or get blasted.
Rod provides you with the information required and necessary to understand the variance in ethnic groups that exist here. Assignment instructions are lengthy but provide all the needed information to get the highest points. Extra credit means extra research papers. He is a rock outside but a marshmallow inside; he cares above and beyond.
Get ready to waste your time with hours and hours of videos that have nothing to do with discussions and write your 5 page essay following all guidelines, going above and beyond, and still not get 100%. Didn't grade until class was over, and had ridiculous expectations. More work than my accounting classes for a joke of a class. Easy Avoid.
Relaxed class, nothing complicated. Solid information and lots of it. Weekly discussion, one research paper, and final; extra credit too. I don't understand others' issues with Profe or class; maybe they don't take Ethnic Studies seriously as other subjects. POC have been treated less than others; I guess the same goes for Profe and ES.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS
Beast doesn't play. I got dropped for not turning in an assignment that said I would be dropped. I spoke with him, and he let me back in. Do as required and instructed; nothing complicated. He is a big teddy bear but comes off as abrasive. After meeting with him, I understood how easy the class was and knew he had my back.
Beast is uncanny yet mesmerizing. Captivating but elusive. Knowledge, confidence, and charisma. Powerful with vulnerability, still abrasive. Speaks with love and teaches with purpose. Community, empowerment, and evolution of the student are his reasons, yet he is misunderstood, beaten down, exploited, and persecuted by those he attempts to uplift.
He uses very old lecture videos. and there about 2 hours long each video not only that but he is so boring. He takes points off the assignments for no reason.
Profe is a good dude, but it is all business unless you connect with him; then he is the cat's pajamas. I was failing; I bombed all the discussions with only partial credit due to my obligations, and he helped me hit the "A" with his guidance. Answer the weekly questions without peer responses, do all three research assignments, and get an "A."
Beast is a loving person if you bond with him, or is all business if you don't. I screwed up all the discussions and got only partial credit due to my life, I was going to fail, and he helped me get an "A" with his care. I advise answering the weekly questions without responding to peers, doing all three research assignments, and achieve an "A."
Work consists mainly of weekly discussion posts (based on videos totaling 1-6 hours), 1 research paper (prompts are given & 2 others can be done for extra credit), & final exam (1 question). The content is very entertaining and informative but can get lengthy and isn't taught by him. Responds fast to emails. No feedback was given (if not needed?).
All questions are encouraged, and you don't feel judged. He cares about his teaching and wants it to resonate with all students. He ensures the vibe is comfortable, and he is easy to talk to. He cares about his students and loves his job. I feel bad that the administration is always targeting him, as are students who don't get what they want.
Extraordinary professor, hands down! I learned so much from his class. He cares about his students and wants them to be successful. I have never met a professor so passionate as he is. He was very helpful regarding the class and in life in general. The most caring, righteous, gentle, and genuine professor I've ever known or probably will know.
He is a sweet, knowledgeable guy, and he is very caring. Respectable and great to talk to. Very thought-provoking and asks that you be objective. Wants you to open your mind, be purposeful, and be authentic. Other professors and counselors speak badly about him because he will not conform. We should be building him up instead of tearing him down.
Unique, Inspiring, Influential, Iconic. The most honest and straightforward professor who teaches the real deal. I love his teaching style, which allows students and professors to learn more. Changed my way of thinking. Treated me like a human, an equal, and saw me for me and into my soul. Touched me in ways I did not know were possible. Amazing!
I wanna say thank you, Professor Valles! I originally failed to read the instructions and, therefore, received an F in the class, but after careful review, I found that the extra credit offered was very generous of him. Please continue your amazing work of spreading awareness and teaching people the reality. Thank you
Profe Rod, I am grateful for having such an exceptionally giving leader to look up to and to gain insight from. Thank you so much for caring about both what you are teaching and how you teach it. I have learned much more in your class than anywhere else. Thank you once again and we need more professors like you!!!
Rod is amazing; you feel like you are in a class where everyone is welcome. He challenges you, but it can be handled easily if you manage your time. He inspired me to question my environment and provided a unique perspective I have not received from any other professor, and it made me self-aware of my actions as well as the actions of others.
Beast is open-minded, warm, & devoted to helping students do well. I seldom review, only when a professor is notable enough. Beast is a rare gem in the diverse sphere of college instructors. The assignments were informative and required deep thought. The material was organized & easy-to-follow. He's understanding & communicative. I love this guy!
Profe was an extraordinary professor. His lectures were long but interesting, and he was not afraid to talk about anything and everything. I wouldn't suggest you take this class if you are easily offended. He is always willing to help you and answer any questions, so there is no reason you can't get an A. ONE OF THE REALEST TEACHERS I HAVE EVER MET
A very insightful professor who genuinely cares for his students. Passionate about his work and transmits positive energy through his lectures. Will make you view certain situations from a new perspective, encourages you to step out of your comfort zone, and encourages you to be more confident. The most helpful professor you will ever have!
Profe was one of the most raw and blunt professors I've ever taken, he says things how they are from his point of view. Getting an A is doable if you actually do the work and READ his instructions clearly. His feedback is helpful and he will give you a reality check if you need it. Overall great class and I recommend taking Prof Rod Valles.
Professor Valles has a strict curriculum for an introduction class. I have spent more time on this course than my stem classes and even those courses are not as time consuming. The professor has complicated assignment instructions and is cold/unapproachable when asked for clarification. I do not recommend this course.
This was one of my first college classes; I was anxious about the workload and lousy teachers. Profe was one of the best teachers I've EVER had. He is genuinely interested in each student (which is hard to find in a college professor and is always willing to help you on his own time- TAKE THIS CLASS! Getting an A is manageable if you work for it.
I decided to take the course with this professor after seeing the positive reviews. I have been disappointed because of the 4-10 weekly one-hour videos unrelated to the discussion topics and the lack of professor engagement. He has not engaged with us since March and that was through an announcement. I do not recommend this course.
Ignore the noise. I took the class, and it was solid and on point. Profe is straight-up and blunt. The class videos provide facts about our world that our teachers failed to tell us and colonizers tried to erase. You don't have to like the guy to learn; that is on you. Class is about reality and not the delusion we live in daily.
I have not enjoyed this class at all. If you don't do the final and follow exact instructions you get an F. The final paper is in APA format using first-person which is unusual. You aren't taught how to do APA format by the professor besides a website link. The coursework is on oppression versus resilience in Chicano culture. Take another professor
Rod is a strict grader but one of the most inspirational professors I have ever had. The class asks you to see yourself and who you are within society and your life. Everything is intentional to make you think critically. It is very self-driven and independent, and extra credit is offered. Don't hesitate to take his class-it can be LIFE CHANGING!
The class is all videos, with no lecture from Rod. There is one discussion a week that you need a partner for. The videos provide a ton of direct and powerful information. There is also one required research essay with three topic choices, and you can do all three for extra points. Overall, I recommend this class and professor.
The class was incredibly insightful, and Profe's way of presenting captivating information made the material come alive and created a supportive and caring learning environment. I appreciated his encouraging open discussions and ensuring every student's perspective was valued. He was there for me and uplifted me as no one else could.
He makes it pretty difficult to turn in assignments. And he droppef me even though I emailed him explaining why I could not turn it in. I contacted him in less than 2 hours and he hasn't got back to me in over 24 hours.
I had the privilege of taking Rod's course last semester, and it was an illuminating adventure. Rod created a welcoming and inclusive environment where students felt comfortable sharing their perspectives and engaging in meaningful dialogue. The material inspired me to delve deeper into the topics and consider different viewpoints.
You rely on other students for your grade. Each discussion required a partner, and if your partner didn't respond, you risked receiving an F. I would not recommend this class unless you are specifically majoring in ethnic studies or have a strong interest in the subject. For anyone else looking to fulfill a credit requirement, don't recommend.
He's a hard teacher which is fine, he is passionate about his teachings which is understandable but he also makes it clear what he expects of his students. The thing I didn't like was the discussions because you have to and because of this I had to switch partners a couple times because they wouldn't post early enough and then I couldn't reply.
Everything that he says in the syllabus is true. Stay on task, and email him if you have questions. This class is worth taking; just be patient, and you'll pass. I recommend emailing someone in that class to be your partner for the rest of the semester. Overall, he's a great professor give him a chance.
Professor Rodrigo runs an engaging online class with powerful lectures and thought-provoking assignments. While the workload is manageable, the material challenges you to think critically about society and your place in it. Using unstuck study alongside the videos helped me stay on top of the material.
Seems like he relies on the students to teach and engage with each other, rather than doing it himself. Also thought it was weird that he kept insisting on pictures and videos of students claiming it was to root out bots but no other professor requires so many pictures and videos for this purpose.
Avoid this professor at all costs. I had to drop the class based on my counselor's advice. The course offers no support, poor communication, and feels like it's designed for students to fail. Save yourself the stress take another professor if you can
I took CHST 150 with Profe, and I can't recommend it highly enough. Rod's passion for the subject matter creates an engaging class. This course is a must-take for anyone interested in understanding the rich history and contemporary experiences of Chicana/Chicano people. Assignments foster critical thinking and creativity. The class and Rod SLAP!
Course covers a wide range of topics, including history, culture, and social issues. Rod encouraged open discussions and allowed us to share our perspectives. It deepened my understanding of the material and also made me feel valued as a member of the class. It was truly transformative and motivated me to engage with the world around me. Take him.
Class videos are excellent. When I met with Rod, he made complex topics understandable and linked them to current events, making them easy to learn. I found myself motivated to explore the issues we covered more deeply, and I felt well-informed. One discussion a week with a required partner, one required research paper, and a required final exam.
Profe is more than just an educator—he is a guiding light in the world of Chicano Studies and the lives of his students. It was clear that Profe approaches his teaching with a rare blend of objectivity and deep compassion. He presents material with fairness and insight, always encouraging open dialogue and respecting every perspective in the room.
I took Chicano Studies a couple of years ago and enjoyed it immensely. Professor Valles is an inspiring and dedicated person who genuinely helps his students. His primary goal is to preserve and promote Chicano culture and history by actively encouraging his students to build meaningful connections with their community. -Extra credit opportunities
What sets Rod apart is his genuine care for his students. There was a time when I felt completely alone, unsure of my place both academically and personally. During those difficult moments, Rod was there for me. He listened without judgment, offered thoughtful advice, and made sure I knew I mattered—not just as a student but as a person.
My mistake was taking a fast-paced course. I took a 6-week course instead of a full semester and I assumed there would be less assignments. I was wrong. There were 16 modules for a 6-week course. Do not take Professor Valles for a fast-paced course. If I would have done a full semester course I feel like I would be fine.
Professor Rod's encouragement and presence touched my soul in ways I can hardly put into words. Professor Rod's kindness and wisdom left an indelible mark on my heart. I am endlessly grateful for the way he believed in me when I couldn't believe in myself. Thanks to him, I found the strength to keep going and the courage to embrace my identity.
I was very encouraged to take this course just based off the ratings on this site. I also had a very high grade in this course but was knocked off some points for doing discussions earlier rather than doing them on those specific days they were due on. The final essay was also 400 points. Your grade is determined by that assignment.
Read all instructions and follow them. Complete your discussion as required. Submit your research assignment. Extra credit is available if needed. He cares but does not play. He speaks directly and means it. Professor Rod, know that you are in the presence of someone truly special. He doesn't just teach—he inspires, uplifts, and changes lives.
Rod creates an engaging and inclusive learning environment grounded in critical inquiry and respect. His course challenges you to think deeply, connect theory to lived experience, and apply concepts to social issues. Not hard, but follow the requirements, or your grade will suffer. Extra credit is available. Do not play, don't try, or lose big.
Professor Rod is legit one of the coolest profs I've had. Class was hella informative. Broke things down so it actually made sense. Kept it real the whole time. High Key, big recommend. Tap in with Rod for sure if you want the reality of being a Chicano and a professor who actually is a Chicano not some lame. I made a friend and mentor por vida.
