This class is supposed to be hard, but with midterm averages in the 30% range and then LOSING! all of the term marks and telling the students two days before grades are offical, its a bit of a joke. Grades were official on the 7th...yet we still have no mark for it (and its the 9th
Budiman's a solid prof. He just gets a bad rep because the majority of Engineering students are anal little dweebs. Poor little students can't grasp the fact that they don't get 4.0's anymore.
What kind of prof loses all the student's midterms anywayz? It's sooo unfair that those that loses gets class average.
He was an awful prof. He couldn't communicate his ideas or practical applications of the theory. If he ever teaches me another class, I won't take it. And no, I am not bitter about no longer getting a 4.0, the grades don't even matter to me.
brutal, brutal course
yikes! This course is already terrible to begin with, and budiman makes it even worse
He's just as retarded as Bauwens. Clarke can teach this class better than both of them combined. Bauwens and Budiman is probably the worst duo in engineering. Heard Budiman teaches ENG 349 just as bad.
budiman doesn't know how to teach, he gives no tools for solving realistic problems, everything he does is only theoretical, nothing applicable to assignments, midterms or finals, he expects us to be able to do everything without practise or instruction, and unlike the other profs, he doesn't give any hints for quizzes and midterms.
This guy did it for me during the midterm review. Gave a problem, and spent whole time trying to figure out the signs for "friction coefficients" of blocks that are given as positive constans by definition. He thinks when you assign a variable Ff, since there's no negative in front of it, the value is positive. Stupidity beyond comprehension.
The idiot below me, if you didn't even have Budiman for your prof why are you even here raiting him? You are the donkey apparently. As for Budiman.. not recommended.
Great prof. Very helpful, and always willing to put in the extra effort if you go to him. Easy to approach and friendly. To all those who say he's a bad prof try putting in some effort into the class before you rag on him. This isn't high school A's don't just show up on your grades, because you bothered to show up to class.
Absolutely terrible. How do profs like this even get hired??? Its beyond me as to how he is allowed to teach.
Most students had absolutely no clue what was going on in class for more than half the course. Course itself was difficult and Budiman makes it more difficult by confusing students with examples without clear explanation. Had to learn mostly through textbook.
Budiman does a very bad job at teaching. For probability and Statistics, he more often than not, spent half the class deriving distributions and spent very little time on examples. I would not recommend him to anyone unless they like derivations.
Didn't know how to teach properly. He's okay if you go up to him and ask questions, but not so much in class. He doesn't define concepts before using them, just throws a bunch of examples and derivations at you. Sometimes he has a moment of clarity but overall not worth your time. Went to the other profs instead.
Budiman seemed very disinterested in teaching the course except when it came to deriving overly complicated distributions that did nothing to further the majority of the class' understanding of the material. He used powerpoints instead of writing his own notes - flipping slides too quickly - making it impossible to take notes in class.
One word, horrible. I've been to other sections that teach 319 and the profs are much better. If you don't need to have Budiman, I would recommend any other prof. Classes are useless, he pretty much derives formulas and then informs you that it's not necessary to know what he did.
would recommend other professors!! good guy but bad teacher
Useless, bad at explaining things and rather unorganized. AVOID!
Horrible professor. Doesn't care about teaching his students and isn't very knowledgeable about course content. The course was easy because all quiz questions were taken from posted problems and luckily the textbook is good (if you have the time to read it). If possible I recommend taking this course with a different professor.
Had him for dynamics AND stats. Brutal courses and tough exams are fine, but I would have been better off with just the textbook.
Horrible professor. Does not explain properly, seems like he lacks proper knowledge of the subject. Marks very hard, seems like a mean person.
Terribly confusing. Material isn't difficult, but he makes it seem like it is. He writes everything on the blackboard so you need to copy all his examples. The exercise questions are stupid and some are impossible to solve by hand. Terrible course and this prof only makes it worse.
Very good at teaching materials, but he's terrible for dynamics and stats apparently. I am very surprised at the quality of teaching and the easiness of ENME 421.
Absolutely horrible.. He is unbelievably vague, especially in the questions he makes in the tests, therefore that make stats even harder and vague than it is already. He does not care about helping students, he is very lazy. He answers questions with minimal explanation. The TA is better than him. DO NOT TAKE if you have a choice. Funny-ish but dry
He is so bad. Avoid him if you can. I took 2 courses with him, ENGG 319 and ENME 421. The class is so boring and he didn't respond to my email for 2 weeks. Plus, he doesn't curve whatsoever even if the average is below 50% on midterms. He totally grinds my gear
He is unfortunately the course coordinator. Budiman makes ENGG 319 extremely more confusing than what it really is. He wrote the textbook for this course and it is the most god awful waste of trees I ever had to read through. Be prepared to sort through his confusion and obscurity with a lot of 3rd-party help and you'll do fine.
He kept trying to convince me the maximum possible combinations of rolling 2 die is 30... He finally emailed me back 2 days later to say I was indeed correct and the maximum should be 36. I really question if he knows the course content himself. He seemingly pulls equations out of no where and the tb he wrote is very unclear.
Extremely helpful whenever i asked him questions. Exams were fair and easy. He likes to test the theory as well as the math some make sure you know it.
I attended every lecture only to get more and more confused as each day passed. I learned more in a 10-hour prep101 class than I did all semester. Material is not hard but this prof his textbook that he wrote makes it difficult. If possible find an actual textbook to learn from.
Course is already difficult. The prof does not explain the course material well. He wrote the textbook used in class so his lectures are essentially word for word from the textbook. Exams are written by him and are unclear, allowing them to be up for interpretation on how to solve problems. Unfortunately only him and another prof teach the course.
I didn't find the course too bad, though the questions tend to be pretty vague and open to interpretation. But, I thought the lectures were clear enough (ignoring some really long derivations) and Budiman gave organized notes and lots of examples.
He's a good prof. a bit hard on the marking and the questions but good at teaching and explaining. STUDY HARD FOR THE FINAL!!! Because it's gonna be tough
Attentive to detail in explaining theory, and was always testing the class with questions that really tested knowledge of concepts, and not just plug and chug. Final exam was tough, but overall, Dr. Budiman was a pretty good prof.
He's a pretty awesome dude, but just not a good prof. He goes through really long and thorough examples that take a long time, but he kinda skips through parts and it doesn't really teach anything. Uses overhead slides and writes on them so unless you print them all off beforehand your notes will be very scrambled and unclear. Easy tests.
Professor is an awful teacher. Doesn't answer and of your questions and all the tests questions make no since and are worded terribly.
As a person: Great and wonderful. "Nice Dude". As a teacher: Jokes and always tries to do better. But, one of the toughest graders I've ever seen. Marks fly with him. Very hard quizzes.
Budiman's test questions are almost always awkwardly worded. On the midterm there were many students asking for clarification on the questions. Over an hour into the test he made the announcement that the questions were worded in such a way that there should be no questions about clarity, then stated that he would no longer clarify questions.
This prof should not be teaching this course. He clearly is very intelligent and has an impressive grasp on his area of study but he is not suited to teaching whatsoever. His proof-filled textbook is next to no help and he is not very open to giving extra help.
Absolutely terrible professor. Does examples wrong in class, makes you buy his textbook that is also riddled mistakes, and is very unclear when explaining anything. All resources have errors and testing is performed on material never covered. Average on the midterm was 57 and reflects his level of teaching.
Absolutely Terrible. He writes the textbook and all the questions for all tests. And hates getting input from his piers as this past year he just replaced the question the other prof had wrote for our midterm and put one of his. He has terrible english skills and doesn't know how to write anything properly. Terrible Just Terrible
His textbook is awful. Too many proofs. He basically just writes the text on the board during lectures so class isn't mandatory. Test questions are unclear.
His lectures are based of his convoluted textbook (which is pretty much mandatory for his open book tests) . While reviewing my notes I have no idea whether the formula I am looking at is a proof or an actualy formula. I would avoid him at all costs, he only cares about chasing paper, not his students.
His textbook is mandatory as he teaches the material in a way that isn't seen in any other textbooks relevant to the same course. His classes are useless as he just regurgitates his textbook onto the board. Avoid at all costs. He made relatively simple material almost impossible to understand, take the course during the summer to avoid him.
Textbook isn't coherent or in-line with any other (universally accepted) resource for statistics. It's also very heavy on mathematical derivations with little expansion on applications of the content. I spent the majority of my study time trying to decipher the english and math and didn't ever feel like I understood either the theory or application
Just... So bad. I'd tell you to avoid, but that's basically impossible if he remains the course coordinator for ENGG 319. I'd tell you to read other material, but his methods are so different that it is really tough to use much else other than his useless textbook. Best advice: bring as much as you can into his open book quizzes and exams and pray
So here's the main idea, he's a bad prof. Almost every class is spent doing pointless derivations. Over the exam break he was on vacation instead of being available for students. For most students ENG 319 was a tough course and he did nothing to help remedy that.
His lectures are VERY similar to his textbook. Neither are clear or helpful. Easy to fall behind, be sure to keep up.
Had him for Probability. By the end I didn;t even know how to find the probability of a coin flip. That's not to say he didn't teach it. That's to say he managed to make me unlearn that basic fact, through hours of god awful lectures and a poorly written textbook. (that he wrote himself)
This is one of the tougher courses in second year engineering, and with this prof, it's only going to be tougher. His lectures are word for word from his textbook, and the examples in class are explained the same as the book as well. Test questions are written strangely and hard to find logical and numerical solutions at the same time. Good luck.
He might not be the best prof, but I absolutely love him. His intentions are pure. Funny guy. However, boring lectures and even more boring textbook.
Budiman spends lectures doing long, convoluted, useless proofs and derivations, leaving you confused and questioning your sanity. Just tab where the important formulas are in his mandatory textbook; it'll get you further than any actual knowledge in statistics will.
He's course coordinator for 319, you have to attend his lectures. Writes most questions for midterms and quizzes, other profs get no say in material. He does a really poor job explaining things and seems to not respect students. I asked him a question after class once and he stopped listening to me to discuss his motorcycle with another professor.
What a terrible person, and horrible professor! It seems that he really enjoy failing his students.
I had to take this class twice, Budiman was the coordinator both times. His tests are tough and much different from his class examples. I left his lectures confused most of the time and learnt most of the material on my own. Thank god he stopped using his own textbook, it was horrible!
Essentially all that he teaches is useless, had to bum off friends with different profs for the material that was ACTUALLY on the final. Missed all the actually important material required in passing the course. "Open Notes" exam means nothing when everything he gave you isnt on the final.
the budiman is very approachable. lectures are generally pretty well taught. buying the textbook is helpful in clarifying confusing topics. his tests are tough but he is a very fair marker and gives lots of part marks!
Not the clearest of lecturers but definitely clear enough still. Approachable and tries hard.
Dr. Budiman is a good teacher for this class. Did reading outside of class, but, lectures were useful. Final was tough though. Very helpful and organized.
Probability is a hard subject to teach in general. The students who say Budiman is a bad professor don't understand this. Sometimes he is not that clear but by the time our class got to the statistics part he was great at teaching it. The weekly quizzes are super easy. His in class examples are very similar to the exam questions. Textbook useless.
Excellent professor, always approachable. Answers questions with respect. If you study you can ace his course otherwise probability is a tough subject and can fail you. Examples that he presents from real situations were really helpful absorbing the material. Midterm and Final were fair.
His lectures are very convaluted. He himself is delusional, in that he argues detrimental points of understanding only further confusing the class. In some cases teaching the completely wrong material, that was eventually corrected in later coarses.
The guy is pretty nice however his classes are super confusing. We had weekly quizzes and it was basically an opportunity for him to take away 6% of our final grade every week. Seriously, the quizzes were painful. Do a full taylor series and if you don't make it to the end you lose 6% overall. Midterm was hard and so was the final. Not a great prof
Lecture material was confusing and concepts were not explained well .The questions on the final exam were extremely difficult and had little to do with what he taught in lecture. He also makes frequent mistakes when doing example questions.
PowerPoints difficult to understand
Dont worry if you dont do well on quizzes - the whole class consistently did poorly. For the group project make sure to meet with him a lot. And take notes during meetings. He kept changing his mind about what he wanted us to do and then blamed his indecisiveness on our group.
Doesnt cares about students, or his job, or life at all... He teaches poorly, and his examples are unclear. Such a waste, as this class should be interesting, and is important. SOLVE ALL PRACTICE QUIZ/ FINAL PROBLEMS! His q's are almost identical to the practice, which won't make any sense, but try to solve anyways. Print all the lecture notes too.
FAR too much content is covered, he will never (sufficiently) explain what he is doing, lectures/tutorials are a gong show, and he will constantly change his mind re the project. Quizzes are based on the tutorials/examples but different enough that doing well requires actually understanding them. But you may as well try to learn Greek instead.
The only time I understood what was going on was when a grad student taught the tutorial. It's obvious that he knows how to solve this stuff, but that doesn't translate into being able to teach us how to do it. Unless you already know how to do this, his solutions make no sense because he doesnt state where anything comes from.
The class has such a scattered approach, yet nothing is really taught. Far too much material is covered but in no detail. "Where did that come from?", "What's he doing there?", etc. are the things I said most trying to teach myself. His solutions miss so many steps it takes an hour to decode how he has solved problems. Really poor all round
Half the problem is him being too disorganized, half the problem is the sheer amount of content he's expected to teach to the class. You're gonna be reading the textbook for days to make sense of whatever he's teaching. Tests are incredibly hard but thankfully, you don't need to pass it to pass the course.
Disorganized, always changing his mind, you can never make him happy no matter how happy all other stakeholders are. He does not seem to understand the concept of SCOPE of WORK and project deliverables, will keep ask for things out of scope and grade you on those, penalize for not meeting his out of scope demands. Also very tough grading.
Unorganized, confusing individual. Cant seem to make his mind up about what he wants, then blames you. Avoid this prof if possible.
He is one of the few professors that don't try to make your life difficult. Whatever you do in class and tutorials is what you will get in the quizzes. The class content is interesting if you are like automotive systems. I personally loved it.
He will ruin you by giving random questions in the final
I would recommend not taking him if you have a choice. He does not teach very well and rather only reads off his notes. I only passed this course by learning off of youtube and it makes no sense for me to pay 1000 dollars for a course that i can just learn at home.
I'm coming for each and every one of you Budiman haters. Y'all better put some respect on his name.
Doing a group project with Budiman is like figuring out what to eat with a moody partner, he doesn't know what he wants, but it sure isn't whatever you're suggesting. Lectures are incomprehensible with the amount of formulas that appear from nowhere, and quiz's bizzarely have no part marks. I learned nothing except how to deal with frustration.
Be prepared. The term project has been said to be harder than capstone and done in half the time with little to no helpful feedback. He'll ask for analysis that is taught in fourth year or to learn a whole new topic and apply it. Having proper method is not rewarded, only the analysis and result matters for quizzes and PBL. Avoid if possible!
Awful lectures. Does not know how to teach. Makes things overly complicated. Thinks he is better than everyone else and just wants to show how much he knows rather than teaching. Very hard to learn from him. Avoid!
This is the best professor I've had in a while. His lectures were detailed and comprehensive, and he didn't miss a single point. He also provided a lot of practice problems in class, which cleared most of my doubts. I highly recommend him.
The worst final I have ever taken in my life. Half of the practice we had was basically useless. We were given a mock final that was pure bait. The final was genuinely top 5 worst creations of all time
Bro what is this guy doing to us what did I do to him to deserve such a terrible final im so done with life this guy is going in my note for sure #r****budiman
Got absolutely obliterated on the final, the mock final was nowhere near the actual final. The worst test I have genuinely written, no amount of studying could've helped, I dont know how these exams are being approved
If you guys have him just gotta say good luck
the 204 final tdy was a massacre, im pretty much guaranteed to fail based on that result. like 9c on the test was unsolvable and the others were ones we've never seen or were twisted to make it unsolvable. he makes his exams way different from the materials and then laughs at people for not understanding “basic concepts”
THIS GUY NEEDS TO RETIRE NOW. HE GIVES MINIMAL PREP MATERIAL FOR THE FINAL AND MAES THE FINAL HARDER THAN ANYTHING YOUVE EVER DONE DURING THE COURSE. PLEASE FIRE THIS GUY #r***budiman
THIS GUY GIVES NO REVIEW MATERIAL AND MAKES THE FINAL IMPOSSIBLE IF YOU GET HIM AS YOUR PROF TURN TO GOD #R***BUDIMAN
budiman took my booty bruh
The material in this course at face value was simple, but Budiman organized the lecture material in a way where most of the lecture time was wasted on random nonsense. The accessible study material was an absolute joke and the only final exam study material was 1/4th the difficulty of the actual final. Never take a class with him as your professor.
No amount of studying will save you
bro was standing in front of our class like a supervillan during the final. This course needs to STAY in third year
The worst course in first year engg. Budiman seems like a genuinely nice guy so this is not an attack on his character, but this was a nightmare with him as coordinator. Theres already little practice available and the ones he made dont reflect test material. If I somehow pass after that dumpster heap of a final itll be because of Dr Kaur (ily)
He coordinated ENG204 this year, and it was such a mess. Some of the questions he wrote for the assignments were so archaic even the TAs didn't understand what was going on. Course work and lecture material felt disconnected, almost no practice material. Exam had near-impossible questions on it just so that the grade average could be brought down.
Completely misleading course. Lectures and assignments were useless for the final, which felt unfair and poorly designed.
The lecture slides for each week are INSANELY long for simple concepts a youtube video can explain in 5 minutes. AND after the LONG slides and weekly practice, NOTHING COMPARES TO the FINAL. THERE IS NO WAY I COULD PREPARED MORE BC THERE WERENT ANY RESOURCES. Nothing. nothing on the practice was like the final or outsourcing practice wouldnt work!!
TEST IS WAY HARDER than anything else you will do in the class
Just not a great prof. Made fun of a student asking for help. Made the final 10x harder than what was covered in class. Barely any practice questions to help practice concepts.
Budiman is so baddd tdy was the final and he touched all of us is may ways. Worst course coordinator and final exam was nothing like practice or previous test. He is EVIL and should never get to be in this position again. Runaway if possible he will touch u!!!!!
impossible questions on the final. don't waste your time studying. just take a nap.
While I understand the lack of past exams due to how new this course is, I genuinely don't know how students are expected to study when NONE of the D2L materials (slides, limited problems and a single practice final) reflect the actual difficulty of exam. Disastrous course that destroys your GPA. Brutal for anyone trying to transfer after 1st year
Genuinely the worst coordinator In the university. If you see this name drop the class before he harvests your soul.
Evil Budiman Stories: -told a student to drop out -stopped responding to emails of one of the students debating a multiple-choice answer on a midterm after a Google search disproved him -asked one of the students, "why are you in this course" after the student was not able to do a calculation in his head - giving a lower grade for a quiz reappeal
I'll be so real with all of you. This guy just shows up, tries to aura farms in the studio sessions, has no idea what is being taught, and then proceeds to set the hardest exam known to man. Please Ucalgary have ramifications for these types of profs
This dude is genuinely a bum. Wallahi I see a ni55a like him in any future courses, I'm gonna tie a noose around my neck and knock the chair off. Genuinely worst final I ever experienced.
Stay away from Budiman 😭
Practice problems were often impossible due to missing or incorrect information, and some answers were wrong. Notes were overcomplicated and confusing. Errors were pointed out but not corrected. The final exam barely reflected the course content. This course needs major revision and new leadership.
Disrespectful, and very egotistical for a man who has no idea what the course content is. I hope UCalgary very quickly corrects the mistake they made for ever hiring such an incompetent, vapid and cruel person to teach such a challenging and crucial course. If you need to take this class, just pray.
The final exam took away my innocence and confidence, I left feeling like a shell shocked solider from WW2. No amount of preparation could've saved me from the brutalness of the questions, he created questions at a incomprehensible level of difficulty. If you have any respect for yourself, wellbeing, will to live, and happiness stay far far away.
The material lecture material wasn't even that hard but it's presented in the most mind bending way that just makes you incredibly confused. Professor Kaur had to add 20 extra slides every week because the regular notes were so unclear. Class feels like a waste of time when everyone is putting so much effort in just to be blindsided by the final
Absolute Dog Shit. How do u have a practice final on topics completely different from the final. Also its like this course is designed to have u fail. The difficulty of the work you do in class and studios so straightforward that u get absolutely shocked when u see the midterm and final. The mock midterm was way more helpful than the mock final tho
I just have to say, dont do well on the midterm. On the final this guy will tear you open, no mercy and proceed to unleash the fires of hell upon you. Limited studying material, not open to questions/debates about problems. The worst final i have ever taken, had no chance on the last couple questions. Just pray gng.
This professor was one of the best most caring person I've ever had. He took time out of his day to think of every way to ruin our Christmas. If you think you're doing ok in the course, wait until the final. The final will violate you and make all your studying look like a joke. GG it's not too late to give up. Choose another major. They hate us fr
DO NOT PUT ANY OF UR ENERGY ON THIS COURSE. THE ONLY DIFFERENCE BETWEEN REVIEW AND NOT, IS BOOSTING MY FINAL SCORE FROM 10% TO 15%
I don't even go here and he took my booty. #R***budiman
As someone who has taken "materials" before, it is very interesting that I have to use my prior work experience and knowledge to pass it, I had to use a formula for question 9 that I knew was not shown properly. If you don't already have a chemical engineering diploma. Study the example problems, nothing else is reflected, even practice final.
Might be the worst professor genuinely. Solutions makes 0 sense his work on his answer keys is complete BS just throws wtv numbers & new equations around. The course was insanely poorly structured, they gave a final of which out of 34 marks, 10 covered content we even saw a glimpse in our course material. Hope they throw this fraud of a prof out.
This guy expects us to be able to do the midterm and final without giving us practice questions that come CLOSE to the difficulty of the exam. Decides to clarify something halfway through the final which was not clear at all on the test. Egotistical melt who has a superiority complex and thinks you should be a genius to grace his presence. Wanker.
This man sucks dog$hit, Uni needs to look at profs like him and throw them onto the streets, not sure what we deserved for this not only throughout the semester but the final which was written in such a way I'm sure he intended it to raw dog us mid exam. The only reason the uni doesn't fire this guy is if THEY'RE intending this class as a cash grab
The Final was completely unfair for this course. Next to no prep, and the mock final in no way reflected what was on the actual final. Thank goodness the final was only weighted 34%, so we have a chance to pass this course.
Very short limit, need to be brief Lecture slides were very confusing and poorly made, afaik from textbook as I found them on YT (without the UofC watermark) Textbook scope is far beyond 204, yet not told what's needed Midterm was tough but fair. Final was unfair and did not match any practice/example problems, slides, mock final, or midterm at all
just run please
Genuinley made me consider jumping off a bridge onto a pile of rakes which he would of probably asked me to find the A/L but dosent give any relative information and then dosent give us forumals for how to do any flipping questions especially ones ive never ever seen before. This mf needs to be fired asap, ship him home
Please please someone fire him, worse coordinator. His office hours were very limited and useless
I can't believe this guy gets paid for ts 💔
Absolute w⚓️. Most unfair test I've ever written.
i want my money back. class literally set up to make u fail
