i cant stand him. he didnt pass me when he know i had to get got of rcc to go to cal state, and then on the first day of class he used ME and MY situation in his classroom ...my friend was in the room and was able to pick up that he was talking about me
He is very nice, approachable, and helpful. He cares about his students. I enjoyed his class and got an 'A'.
Final was very hard. He rushes through lessons if he's behind (which he always is) then expects you to be an expert on it. Would only recommend if you're very good in math and can master concepts at a very fast pace.
Unfortunately, I couldn't have picked a worse teacher in the entire math dept of RCC. He rushes through the chapters, always behind, skips the important stuff in each chapter and just does examples expecting us to know how he did it. HORRIBLE TEACHER! F!
OK teacher.
He is hard to understand. if you have a lot of patience and don't mind waiting while he divides 11 in half using a calculator (no joke), then he may be the right teacher for you. I stoped going to class and learned using the book and did a lot better than when i did go.
Mr.Ruiz should not call himself a teacher becuase he is extremely ambiguous regarding assingments, you can't hear him becuase he has a soft voice, and you doesnt explain math concepts very well. I do not recommend this class.
He goes off on a lot of tangents and never fully expains anything. Rushes through the chapters fast. He grades his test hard. I would not recommend him.
hard to understand sometimes. nice guy. explains well just skips some important lessons. always wants you to finish his sentences. lol. grades easy. not a lof of HW
a little hard to understand cause of his mexican accent.not too bad though. he is not a very good teacher.he rushes through chapters alot, and only does examples on the board, and kinda hopes you got it as he moves on. he says, does everyone get that?and everyone is just quiet because they dont want to listen to him try to explain it again.dont take
Look he's a really good teacher and yes u can understand his accent cuz its not that bad; however, his tests are difficult especially if u really dont get whats going on. Everything else is easy and he explains calculus fairly well.
teaches very good. exams r hard but helpful
Straight spanglish yo!

Weird English....Canoot understand what he is saying...
TOOK HIM THIS PAST SPRING... TRU HE IS A LITTLE WEIRD WHEN HE TEACHES, DOESNT REALLY EXPLAIN THINGS WELL, GUYS COME ON NOW HIS ACCENT ISNT THAT BAD!!! 1 THING HE SAYS "THE THING THAT IT IS IS..." ITS FUNNY. NICE TEACHER REALLY CARES ABOUT STUDENTS..WOULDNT HURT TO KNOW A LITTLE ALGEBRA BEFORE YOU TAKE HIS CLASS! IF YOURE RUSTY THINK TWICE!!!
He does a very good job explaining the material. I rarely even had to read the explanations in the book. His tests were difficult but he went over every thing before hand. He even had a fairly good sense of humor, for a professor. If I were to take Math 1B and 1C at Riverside then id take it with this professor and i recommend him to others.
I don't really agree with all the negative feedback. Took statistics with him and he gave a clear syllabus at the beginning of the semester. He makes a lot of jokes. Fair tests and quizzes. He teaches by the book, so I recommend you read along as he teaches to make your own clarifications. He has an accent (Spanish/Mexican), but it's not too bad.
I took him for stat and he was good. He was no bien in Differential Equations. He should stick to what he knows best.
Mr. Ruiz is a very good stats professor. I was surprized how somewhat easy the material is. He uses the book ALOT, so always bring it to class. He's funny and really nice and helps you out whenever he can. Honestly a very good class.
Mr. Ruiz was alright. He wasn't bad, but he wasn't the best either. He mumbles to himself alot and speaks spanish randomly (numbers and letters mostly) while doing examples on the board. I'd recommend to people whom are independent and can teach themselves if needed. Just show up to turn in homework and a day before the test.
He is really smart but sometimes has a hard way of explaining things. Not a good teacher if you dont like math
Lectures weren't too clear, and if I didn't go to the lab at least once a week, no doubt I couldn't have passes. But he was VERY helpful one on one, and in the lab and was willing to meet in his office anytime.. would go over and over material since i never understood it. Willing to help
I took him for statistics, and he's very helpful. It seems sometimes like he doesn't know what he's talking about but he does. It's an easy class though since he drops one test, one quiz, and one homework assignment.
TAKE HIM! i have failed every math you can imagine in high school and i absolutely HATE math. i was scared to take this class, but this is one of the best classes ive taken. he is SOO nice n funny...grades fair! hes very flexible when it comes to assignments & make-ups. Just study and do homework. most test are multiple choice! TAKE HIM!
Nice and funny. He is a good teacher, but whether or not his style works for you will probably make or break your grade in the class. Make sure to do all of the homework, as tests are pretty hard, but he is not condescending about his math knowledge, nor does he try to trick you with trick problems on the test, like a lot of other math teachers.
Ruiz is a fun professor. He makes class interesting and worth attending. This semester was the first he assigned homework on my math lab and I liked it. I never looked at a book once and still did great. Tests are decent. Just study the night before and youll be fine.
He's a cool guy but not a great teacher, he would often go off subject and for having the class for an hour, he wasted most of our time blabbing about something in Mexico. He would also speak spanish and we would have to remind him to speak in english. He's an easy teacher but I don't advise him if you have to take alot of math in your major.
Mr. Ruiz is a great teacher; he knows what he's doing. He's funny too, thats why his class is interesting. He makes the material enjoyable. not an easy class, but he makes it worth it. Tests are OK and you do need to do hw in order to be able to do the test well. He's also willing to help you and for the students to succeed. take him!
He is such a good professor! He goes over all the material you need to get A's on the exam if you fail its your own damn fault!! He's funny too which helps when taking a math course.
He's funny but not a great professor. Does not check the HW so it doesn't matter if the person nxt to u did half of the hw while u did ALL the problems. U and him will have full credit. He doesn't care if you are trying or not. He said it would tell us sections we need to know in the final. At the end he said "everything." He doesn't check e-mails!
He is the best math professor at RCC. His tests are kinda challenging, but he curves them if everyone does bad. Make sure you do your HW to understand it. He is helpfu in class and in his office hours.
He is a very nice and helpful teacher. I took his 1b calculus course this summer and I plan to take his 1c course in the spring. Any person who talks bad on this professor obviously isn't studying hard enough! He give very simple tests and not a lot of homework compared to other professors I have had. I recommend taking his class.
worst math teacher i've ever had..
He was an alright teacher. Had him for STATS in summer. He checks the homework carefully! And the test were just homework problems.
The best math teacher ever. He is more than willing to help and goes at a good pace. If people dont pass they arent doing the hw and showing up to class. I hope to take him for more courses and HIGHLY reccommend him
WEB-ENHANCED STATS.he has a tendency to go off topic.offers a few extra credit opportunities & allows you to bring a notecard to the exams.complaint: unorganized! warning: make sure to write out each step (EXACTLY how he writes it on the board) on any written portion of the exams. He will not tell you this but will dock off major points in the end!
Because I took this one for Trig I can say that he's terrible. I suppose he wants the entire class to join ''in'' when he jokes, nobody does to his dismay.
This guy tries his best, but his best is not enough.
This Guy, what a crappy professor, granted he can be funny. Most of the time though, not just using valuable time. Marks off dumb points and then laughs in your face about it, tests were indirect and contains problems not covered. Do not take this guy. Trust me
I learned more reading the book than listening to any of his lectures. Hard test grader. docks off points for stupid stuff like not putting dx on integrals. Just No...
Incomprehensible, I had to sit in the 2rd row in order to understand him. Don't take him during summer, he rushes thru lectures but still expects u to know the material perfectly. Hard grader, takes off points for little things. That being said, he's very helpful if you go and ask for help. Doesn't really check hw, just write something down.
The only one unexpected B I got in my 60 credit record. You know what I am talking about...You got to study the last two new chapters without any of his help. Whaaat? He must be kidding me.
I was enrolled in his class for a summer Calculas session. It was very comprehensive and I loved the way he presented the concepts to the class. He gave the students a change to digest new information. I would definitely recommend to other students.
My review was deleted, but I don't know why... anyway, I had him for 1B and 1C, and he was awful... I only learned using the book and I did get an A both times, but barely. You can get an A and still recognize a bad teacher. I am still suffering in upper division math for not having a quality experience in these classes. Love the "paper" graphs-NOT
I took his Statistics class over winter. He was a good professor who explained everything very very well. The tests were decent and easy. He would get kind of lazy and make the tests easy or not even grade the homework but just give you the credit for it. Allows notecards on tests.
I took him for summer session...you must use the book and do homework(which if you are a college student you should do regardless) to expand on the limited time of summer or winter classes. If you need help he is awesome at answering questions. Tests are challenging but not hard. He is also hilarious!!! Great teacher would definitely recommend.
I took him for Statistics over Winter 2012 and passed. He explains it very well and uses examples. Note cards were allowed for each test! He would get lazy and make tests easy and even had one be a take home. I would really recommend him for stats!
Prior to taking Stats, I was looking forward to it. When I decided to take him, I completely lost interest. His teaching style is just not right. He tends to get lazy and is disorganized. Sometimes his jokes are funny. Sometimes it's just bland. Take it with a prof that you can actually learn something from.
I thought the class was great! Professor Ruiz was funny and very flexible! I loved the class! Math is hard but I felt he did a great joc teaching it!
All i have to say is that this teacher is amazing. i suck at math but honestly he made me understand math, i hope there is other math teachers like him out there.
Extremely boring. Dry sense of humor. Heavy accent, somewhat difficult to understand. Teaching style is subpar, there are better teachers for this course considering it is a slightly tougher one.
Good teacher, jokes are a little bit funny, anyway, I passes, and he is willing to answer questions
The class was hybrid and tough yet, the professor gave us a lot of examples and visual cues to make us understand the material better.
He is the best. Because of his excellent explanation, I don't need stud and I could remember everything he taught in the class, and got highest score in every test. He is flexible, helpful, and a real model. He has a great personality. I highly recommend him.
great class cant believe i passed
Mr. Ruiz is a great professor. I absolutely hate math but his stats class wasn't bad at all. He is very funny and tells a lot of stories which makes it less boring. His lessons are also easy to follow but do yourself a favor and sit up front if you really want to learn and to participate. Oh and do the homework. The extra points help when u need em
The thing that is is Ruiz is a great professor. You haters just need to chill out a drink some dos x's. Multivariate calculus was a breeze with him. Even let has have a group quiz once. The thing that is he teaches well and expects you to study. This is multivariate calculus not math 35.
Ruiz is a good professor. He explains topics very well. In fact it gets tedious sometimes when he continues to explain if you already understand the material. Other than that, I have no complaints. I have to agree with the rating from 5/17/14. Considering that the class is Multivariable Calculus, he makes it easy. I recommend him over others.
Ok professor final killed me. I had an A up until the final.
Ruiz is lazy and spends too long on basic problems. You will be behind other classes. He makes it easy to pass, but not a good class to learn the most out of the subject.
Ruiz has a strong Spanish accent. You can tell his subject isn't strong in statistics. You are better off learning from the math tutors in tutorial services or by yourself. Do the homework and show up to class. May the force be with you.
Worst teacher in my two years. He refused to help me when I needed it, told me to ask other class mates (of whom didn't understand the lesson either), made things up as he went along, very last minute person, kept passing off lessons claiming they weren't important (and they showed up on test anyway), just don't take him. Grading is ridiculous
Three stars is fair enough. I Took this class in the winter and ended up getting a D. Then when I asked him about my grade later, I found out I had 337 points when I needed 340 to pass. He had to think about it for a week or two, but he eventually agreed to let me pass only because I was three points off. If you can, go to Norco for Stats.
Ruiz is a nice professor, has great sense of humor, but is very unorganized on the board/in class. It's hard to follow his work at times. His method of teaching made it difficult to really understand whats going on. Tests take awhile to get back. Be careful taking him, and be ready to search youtube for someone to teach you certain concepts.
Professor Ruiz was great and knew how to explain things very well. Knows material well. He isn't a professor that gets upset about having to repeat things. He has a sense of humor and has an accent but that never got in the way of things. He is always willing to help his students, drops lowest test grade and gives extra credit on most exams.
He has a bit of accent & does want you to ask questions but his teaching method is difficult to understand. He does have required HW.
I took this class during Winter session and I have to admit that I did learn a lot from this class, but only because I studied several hours a day for it. His lectures are not very helpful so ask him for help. In regard to exams he said "Math is about solving problems, therefore I expect you to know how to solve any kind of problem".
Great professor, he's funny and knows what he's talking about. Homework almost everyday but it's hardly ever more than 20 problems. The homework is basically the test, make sure to ask questions he loves helping his students. Don't use your phone! that makes him super mad. There's only a few tests, did all the hw and got B's on all the tests
This professor is unorganized. He expects you to know everything! His teaching style is not the greatest! There was a time my partner and I needed help on an equation and he said, "Sorry, I don't know the answers. I can't help you." He doesn't even make sure you did the homework, he just checks it off. Worst instructor I ever had!
Ruiz is amazing professor, y'all trippen. His homework helps with the tests, he helps when you need it as well as sometimes lets you work in groups. i never understood math until I took him, this is the second time taking his class. Highly recommend taking him.
the concept of statistics is hard but he teaches the lessons as clear as possible. do all the homework and show up to class paying attention and taking notes and you'll be fine. he does have an accent but nothing you can't understand. my favorite math professor thus far!
Very unorganized. Doesn't know what is due when, and won't answer your questions. Expects you to ask other students for help when they don't even understand the material. He takes forever to pass back exams and assignments then gets upset when your late to lab by 5 minutes but it's ok for him to be late to lab 10 like c'mon bro get it together.
I never understood math in my life until taking this professor. I know some people were discouraged by his seeming lack of help at times, but that was his point. I never understood math before because I would always expect someone to show me the answers, instead of actually thinking about/assimilating the material. Ready for MAT12!
He gets off topic a lot & is forgetful! After the 1st test, I started teaching myself because he wouldn't touch on everything. I don't even know why I went to class. I found the book more helpful & easy to understand. I had to study my ass off. I can honestly say he taught me nothing, I taught myself. If you take this class do HW & STUDY!
One of the best Math professors ever!! I was never really good at any type of math but he made it easy for me to understand. Teaching style may be a bit different but it sure is effective. Homework really helps prepare you for the tests! Grade is based off of tests.
His awesome , one of the best prof. I ever had for math. All the work he gives you makes you understand math.
Lectures are somewhat clear. Tests contain questions that were never taught or seen before. He claims that the test is similar to the homework problems but on numerous occasions, he gave us questions we had no idea how to solve. Do not try to give him excuses he seems to have no sympathy and thinks you are making it up.
A majority of the learning comes from being able to use the textbook to understand concepts yourself. He based our grades off exams with 2% of the grade being homework. He is strict when grading exams & doesn't drop the lowest test grade. However, he is generous in rounding students final grades.
Did not want to take this class with him due to all of the bad reviews. BUT he is not bad AT ALL. He will go off on tangents sometimes but still gets through the material, he is available whenever you need him, and he will offer his help anytime you don't understand something. Has an accent, but can be understood and he JOKINGLY talks in Spanish.
Dont take him people .Dont you will fail .And he doesnt care if you dont understand him .He will tell you to do it yourself
He was brutal for Math 1B. His tests were never like the homework and would take the whole class time plus extra time to finish. It was just ridiculously hard for no reason. I don't even think it prepared the majority of the class for the next math courses. Do not take him.
He likes making students work in groups so he doesn't have to teach. His lectures are very hard to follow. In a two hour class he gets through one problem due to his rambling, then tells everyone to get in groups and teach each other. He'll mark down your tests and quizzes for very tiny errors. Let's hope he retires finally.
I asked him a question and he told me to "look it up on youtube." I believe he said he is the third longest tenured prof at RCC; and it shows. He does ramble a lot and seems lazy. I went to tutoring a few times and buddied up with someone else. Basically he was just there to give me my grade.
Professor Ruiz was such a sweetheart. I hate math but he explained everything so well and is more than happy to help whenever you need it. With covid he made our switch to online super easy. The only bad thing is that he takes a while to reply to emails but other than that he is really great! You'll love him!
Doesn't respond to emails. Goes off on tangents during lectures. Says "uh huh" after almost every sentence. Expects participation or utter silence until someone says something. How you not gunna respond to the students when theyre trying to find information on the textbook you require.
He sucks at lecturing and doesn't explain some of the things needed for the homework. If you pay attention you still need to spend hours studying because he wont explain further. He is also so strict with the work policies.
Prof Ruiz was great, I understood everything without ever needing the book except for homework problems. Never had to do independent study which is so rare for math classes. Sometimes his lectures could be a little confusing but so long as you ask questions you're good. He's really friendly and accommodating too.
People are a little too harsh on him, he is old but he is very sweet and respectable. Don't take his class if you prefer lectures involving the big screen (he just uses marker and whiteboard). Overall he has an older style of teaching, but if you just pay attention, show up, and do the homework, his class really wasn't that difficult.
He's honestly the best statistics professor you could ask for. I have tried to take statistics three times before and dropped each time but Mr. Ruiz really makes it hard to fail. He drops your two lowest homework assignments, two lowest quizzes, your lowest exam, and he'll round up from 3% away (67% is a C, 77% is a B, 87% is an A). 10/10 recommend
Do not take this professor. His homework is in no way related to the information that will be on each exam, and has zero remorse for you or your grade. After an exam, while we were going over the answers he said that he gave us a problem "just to see how you would handle it". The question was worth 10% of the exam.
Relatively decent professor, very understanding, however, the lectures do drag on. Pace was relatively okay, except near the end where 2 final exam problems were not taught at all during the class, most likely due to time. The grading isn't hard, and he drops lowest quizzes & HW assignments, and one test can be stacked onto final in case you do bad
