Really learned how to use calculus in chjemistry!
Not a good listener or teacher! The class has no structure!
This guy is a total ass. He expects you to know everything about p-chem before even coming into class, and he makes you feel like a total idiot for asking a question. He is NEVER in lab for you to ask a question either. NEVER finishes a thought(um, um...)
Needs to learn how to teach without the umms and aahhs every other word. Can we say BORING?
I sat in his class for a day and dropped it. It was so boring. He refered to elements as "things."
Not a good teacher. He can't finish a thought and if he does it makes no sense. He seems inconvenienced by questions from students. Also, if you don't get the review sheet answers you will not do well on the tests. Avoid at all costs
Great
very tough course, but if you see him during office hours he is a big help

Dr. Barth is an interesting man who is obviously very intelligent. While his lecture is very difficult to understand he does care whether students are doing well, he's most helpful in his office hours and he's really funny!P Chem is a hard course, it just takes a lot of work.
he knows something, as he managed to achieve a PhD but he sure can't impart any of that knowledge to anyone. he's present for the first half hour of lab every lab, but then is missing for the next three hours. incredibly unhelpful and he stinks of something unidentifiable (something fermented?)
Nonsense teacher I ever had.
Barth wants to be a good teacher and trys to be helpful but has no clue how to make things understandable. He'll try to accomadate what the class feels will be the best method of teaching and testing however it is impossible to learn the material based on his teaching
You have to work very hard in both of these classes to do well. Don't be afraid of his office hours, he extremely helpful if you have the patience to prod him with questions. If you don't understand, tell him! He gave us take home exams because we asked for them!
horrible teacher.. doesn't help u out.. and always talks about aliens being "out there".. needs to get a life..u feel bad for the guy..had him over the summer.. don't take him if u can help it.
He was so easy...but sooo boring and his breath smelled so bad from drinking so much coffee. He referred to everything as things and couldnt explain anything. I don't know how he is in lecture but I can only imagine....labs were so simple and he allowed us to work in groups of like 3...4...5....idk how this man got his teaching degree.....good luck!
Easily the single worst teacher that I ever had in my life. He is completely unable to relay any kind on information on to the students. He uses pre-determined answers and values and doesn't explain where he got them. He is boring as hell and doesn't know it. He is about four feet tall and I think he has more than one row of teeth!
GET OUT NOW!!!he is the reason i will not be in the FBI any longer bc i switched majors bc he turned me off of chemistry! i dropped his course b4 my GPA dropped first! if u stay ur favorite words will be "uh and umm" and you will def. catch up on ur sleep!im sure he was a good teacher at one point but needs to retire now...not up with the times...
Barth is a troll. I had to drop the class because he was impossible. His reviews do not reflect the content of the test. He is the King of the Babble-ons. He goes off on tangents that have no significance to the material. I got help from a tutor and dropped out with a C. The tutor was responsibe for the 76% I knew in chem. Dr. Barth was of no use.
This class was a piece of cake, you have to be literally dumb to not get an A in the class. He was such an easy grader and none of the labs had any calculations
he made me want to kill myself...but i settled for switching majors and then switching schools! he rambles about elements being things and about coffee and that horrible soup that he eats. single worst teacher ever. avoid taking him at all costs.
In his office he'll help until you understand. Find him funny in an eccentric way. He's very intelligent which makes him hard but at least he'll help.
counted over 200 "uhhh" or "ummm"s in less than a half hour. just cant pay attention...I will give him some credit he does have ok tests because of bringing a index card but you better read the book
If you want to know random facts that have almost nothing to do with this course, then go to class. If you like to solely read the book to get your education, then he is perfect. Rambles and says um, uh, and a, alot. The only thing he is useful for is his review sheets. He made me want to go in the complete opposite direction of this major.
He was the worst professor I ever had. He hated me from the beginning and I have no idea why. I worked super hard and he still wouldn't give me good grades on my lab reports. Avoid if you can!
I loved him and thought he was hilarious very hard...but chemistry is hard as it is... he isnt very clear but he will help if you ask. you have to go into this class expecting to teach yourself, but he is a very intelligent dude whom I am taking again
I looked forward to this class since it would be the only class I concentrated on b/c its a summer course. He is terrible, sarcastic, and rude. Awful teacher. Tests are hard, review sheets are helpful though. "Uhh..Ahh..Umm" thats what you're paying for, to hear him say that for the entire class period. Avoid if you can!! if you cant, good luck.
Anyone going into chem is going to have a tough time, no matter what teacher you take. with dr. barth, you need to go into class ready to focus.. he is confusing at times but you have to read through the book and really teach yourself how to do the problems and understand what he is teaching in class.
If you are good at teaching yourself, Barth is the easiest professor to take. His exams tests the basics, but most people failed because they were unable to teach themselves the concepts. He is unable to explain Chemistry in class or individually. If you want to leave this class understanding Chemistry and ready for 104, take Dr. Townsend.
The worst professor at the Unversity. He is very unclear and is all over the place. Do yourselves a favor and take Townsend. Barth's exams, however, are very basic/easy if you do understand the material.
worst teacher ever. he wasn't clear in class at all and i guarantee i would have failed that class if i hadn't had all the concepts in AP chem in hs. unless you had AP chem in hs and feel confident in what you know from that, DON'T take barth
Basically if I had not taken Honors Chemistry II the year before I would probably not be doing well at all. If you like listening to ummm well ahh you see its like..... ummm, then this is the class for you. Townsend came in for one class and it was totally different and easier to understand.
Dr. Barth is a really funny nice guy. But he's not a very good prof. I think someone counted once that he said um 132 times during one class. Again, a nice guy, but I would not recommend taking him unless you have a strong background in chemistry.
I HATED him at first but now I really enjoy the class and him. Very nice and helpful, but not always the clearest.
CRL 103 - He is alright for labs. If you have any intelligence then the labs will be fine, just read the book and do the work. CHE 104 - While the tests are easier than Townsen, Barth's lectures are horrible. I suggest you add yourself to Townsen on OWL and force yourself to do the extra homework assignments. it's the only way to learn.
WORST TEACHER EVER! Don't take his class unless you can teach yourself! His lectures are worthless!!!!!!!
While lecture is not the most exciting, it's still useful, and I felt really well prepared for the ACS exam. However, if you're a student who wants the professor to hand feed everything to you, Dr. Barth is not for you- he expects people to take responsibility for themselves. Very helpful in office hours, and very kind.
Dumbest smart guy in the whole faculty. Easy tests amusing but HORRENDOUS teacher. He cant explain anything for his life and will get his own example problems wrong on the board. He is most likely senile and you will see him randomly walking around dragging his feet like an idiot. DO NOT TAKE HIM IF YOU WANT TO UNDERSTAND CHEM.
Barth is really a horrible teacher. He does not know how to teach. Going to class is pointless, I haven't learned anything from him; tutoring is a must! He rambles on about random, irrelevant information and don't bother asking questions or going to office hours, he doesn't answer your question and again will ramble on about pointless information.
You have to do the majority of your work and learning outside of the classroom; Barth does not know how to teach. He draws weird pictures on the board and is very unorganized in his work. He stutters way to much and messes up a lot. I would not recommend him to anyone. His tests may be easier than other professor's, but only if you teach yourself.
He is not a good professor. his thoughts are everywhere and it shows when he tries to write things out on the board. he is hard to follow and cant get his thoughts out. there are homework quiz's almost every week. he moves very fast. hes a nice guy but not a good teacher. the class is about half or less the size it was in the beginning.
He is a bad teacher. He can't get his points across in a clear manner. Most of what he writes on the board are examples that he has done before the class, so he just writes in the numbers not showing the actual calculations. I had to withdraw so it wouldn't hurt my GPA. Dr. Townsend is a much better alternative if you need to take a chem. class.
He's a great teacher, although lecture is boring. Don't listen to people who say he's a horrible teacher- he's not you just have to do work on your own. Go to office hours-he's very helpful there.
Fun class. Thought I was going to take a Science class without having to remember molecules and bonds, but still had to. Fun class if you are thinking about home brewing or not.
Lab is so easy. Honetly if you don't get an A you just didn't show up. Obviously, attendance is mandatory but the labs aren't difficult and neither are the calculations or reports. 4 pre lab quizzes (super easy, you complete them before class) pre labs easy as well. He does lecture in the beginning of lab for a good 20 mins but always got out early
If you don't get an A in lab, you shouldn't step foot in SS again. Everything is easy: the calculations, pre lab quizzes, experiments, reports, everything. He does lecture a little too long in the beginning of class. Reports are due same day but you're always out early.
chemistry of beer... TAKE THIS CLASS! easy A... as long as you go to class you'll be fine. the book is the key to getting an A.all questions on quizzes and tests are right from the book. very hard to get below a A in this class. and the professor is such a nice guy! although boring teacher, he deserves a lot of respect when in class.
He gives reviews sheets before each test which is exactly whats on the test. Really helpful. I hate chemistry but loved having him as a professor.
Nicest Professor. He teaches directly from the book which is very small and written by him. My advice is to take the class period to study each chapter instead of taking notes from the slides. Each quiz is directly from the chapter. Easy A! And I hate chem more than any subject!
i would have to say he is one of the most unclear teachers that i have ever had. when he cant explain something he uses the word stuff and his lectures go in circles at best. were about 2/3 of the way through the semester now and have lost well over half of the class. save your GPA save yourself and get the hell out of his class if you can!
Very good professor. The only people who find this class difficult are those who dont work hard. His class does take effort, but its very do-able
Hard material (it's chemistry, don't expect it to be easy!), but easy class. Read the text, go to class, do all of the homework. Barth makes it possible to get a really good grade due to his excellent review sheets and easy tests. Also, he's into the chemistry of beer, and peppers the class with fun facts about it.
I took Dr. Barth's 103 class over the summer. It was the easiest college course I've ever taken. His exams are literally the same questions from the review sheet with essentially different numbers. If you can do the review, you will get an A. I would also recommend taking him for the lab componenent - he doesn't actually grade the prelabs.
He is SO BORING. It is literally impossible to sit through his class, but the quizzes and tests are extremely easy.
Dr. Barth is a great guy, and is really passionate about the Chemistry of Beer. His lectures can be unbearably boring, but he makes up for it with extremely easy tests and quizzes. If you pay attention, you will learn a lot about how to make your own alcohol and beer, but it is quite difficult to decipher his tangents at times. Easy A, however.
He's a nice guy, but his teaching methods are the worst I've seen so far as a college student. He scribbles on a chalkboard and switches from one topic to another so quickly. You can't even take organized notes. He doesn't thoroughly explain anything. You'll be completely lost and have to teach yourself from the book.
Everyone thinks this class is going to be a breeze- it's not you need to actually try. But if you do try you'll be fine. I'm awful at chemistry and I got an A. He wrote the book so word for word what you need to know is written in it. Lots of quizzes but he only counts 10. I didn't listen in class once but used the book & aced every quiz and test.
103 is hard, particularly in the short summer period. But if is doable if you're willing to work. He gives reviews before each test and answer any questions. If you do the review you should be okay, but lecture is so boring and hard to follow. He uses no visuals, just talks the whole time. Just be prepared to work for a month and then you're done!
Dr. Barth is very intelligent, but is pretty awful at explaining things and making it clear. In one lab period, he probably says "Uhh" 70+ times, making it very hard to follow what he is trying to say. He hardly gives lab grades back, nor posts anything so good luck knowing your grade. Overall, though, very smart man, just not a good teacher.
Dr. Barth is a really smart man but he cannot teach AT ALL. He knows everything when it comes to the subject matter but he stutters a lot and goes on tangents during his lectures. Although I haven't learned much in his class, his labs are written out in detail so all you have to do is follow directions and show up and you'll get an A for that lab!
Terrible. I thought Chemistry of Beer would be a fun science Gen. Ed. however it is absolutely terrible. I got an A in high school chemistry so I thought I could handle this class. WRONG. Barth is extremely unclear, his lectures have nothing to do with the quizzes, (class averages were typically 45%), and he jumps from one topic to the next.
This guy can not teach. 20 minutes of youtube do a better job than 2 hours listening to Barth.
Most boring class ever, just do the review questions in the textbook and you should be good. At least one quiz a week and only 5 questions to each quiz. Two tests and an optional final. If you're willing to put up with a boring lecture, you'll do fine
Dr. Barth's lab was so easy. You show up, hand in the prelab, do the experiment, and hand in the report sheet. He is always willing to assist you. As long as you follow the procedure and your results are close to accurate, you get an A. Besides the prelabs there is no outside work. Definitely take him for lab.
this class is not an easy A. at first you might think it's easy until he starts throwing diagrams into the quizzes, which aren't covered in the book (if they are it is extremely unclear) he's also extremely boring. it's sad because he tries to be entertaining it's just a very boring class. midterm is so hard although he claims its easy
If you take Chem of Beer only because you like beer, beware! He knows a lot but at times the information he gives you is too much. Quiz every week. 2 tests and a final. He takes your top 10 quizzes out of like 15 (1 every chapter). The tests were stressful so do well on the quizzes. Final was optional. His lectures are dry. Half of my class skiped
Dr. Barth is a really nice guy and he is super passionate about what he teaches but to be honest if you are not interested in it the class will be complete torture. Do not recommend skipping class because there is at least one quiz a week and those can make or break your grade
Seems very easy at first then he gets completely confusing and jumps from topic to topic. He stutters a lot while screaming during lecture so it makes it more confusing. Drops 5 lowest quiz scores, final is optional. Midterm is so hard I got a 38%. I wouldn't recommend this class, take geology or physics because I've heard way better things.
I respect how knowledgable he is on the subject. However, he really is not a good professor. Disorganized in his lectures, can never understand what we're really talking about, especially during his tangents. Nice guy, but needs to learn how to effectively teach. NOT AN EASY A. It's very hard and the tests are not easy like he claims them to be.
He knows what he's talking about and he's excited about the topic. However, he's just not a good professor. His excitement doesn't rub off on you and he jumps around in lectures. He uses only powerpoints that you don't have access to and goes too fast. He cares but he's not good at explaining anything and you will feel lost in this class.
Dr. Barth is a very nice man, however his teaching skills are not good. You have quizzes on every chapter, he says they're like the homework, but they're not. He gives you homework-never gets graded. He gives few tests but they're very hard, my class had over half of the class receive grades BELOW 50 on the first exam. Avoid if you can.
If you are a chemistry major, you will have to take seminar with Dr. Barth. This s an absolutely brutal class, not because it's hard but because of the way he "teaches". His lectures are rambles that are littered with ums and uhs. His grading of powerpoint/ poster is based soley on his personal preference. I just wish a different professor taught.
I am a student of brewing science and i grasp clearly the concept in his book .take some time and understand it.
Literally only showed up on quiz/test days. Super easy, study guides given for both exams, optional final, all quizzes are just based on the end of chapter questions in the textbook. Super knowledgeable about the subject, but lectures can be dry.
Dr. Barth is such a nice man and is very passionate about chemistry, however he does not have slides when he lectures he just writes on a a chalk board and it becomes very hard to follow. I often found myself teaching myself the material. The exams are also 6 open ended question. Not the best teacher, but very nice man and loves Hanukkah.
I took this class bc I suck at science & i thought it'd be easy. I was wrong. There was a quiz every single class. If you don't know basic chem, do not take this class. He does not help you learn chem & just assumes you know it. He knows what hes talking about, but he's just not a good professor. It's so easy to get lost. Don't do this to yourself
I never really felt comfortable asking him questions about the lab, he is an extremely tough grader and doesn't give you feedback on where you lost points. Avoid him as a lab professor and lecture professor in general, take someone else if you can.
Dr. Barth is not a good lecturer at all. It can be extremely hard to read what he puts on the board at times and he barely ever uses power points in class. His tests are fairly easy, though, and he dedicates an entire class to reviewing the chapters that are on it. He also gives his students access to his lecture notes and they're really helpful.
I recommend not even going to his lectures. His class is very hard to follow because he tells you a bunch of random information in no particular order and you cannot read his handwriting. There is alot of homework but it is fairly easy to get a good grade on it. Tests are not too hard, but are worded vaguely and have some curveball questions.
This class makes me cry. I am struggling so much. He is such a bad professor. He can't teach anything. I find it very difficult to follow him. It's so easy to get lost. There is really no point of going to his lectures. All my advice for future students is 1) don't procrastinate, DO NOT 2)Read the Textbook, take notes 3) Watch YT Vids
Already gave Dr. Barth a review, but I feel like I need to change it because he isn't nearly as bad as people make him seem. His lectures are far from great, yes, but he makes up for it by letting students use his notes and he is accessible outside class. Also arguably the easiest professor in the department considering he tests on the basics.
Dr. Barth is completely disorganized and unprepared for his lectures. He does not provide any notes to the class and/or assist in teaching. He is unable to answer questions and unfamiliar with the homework assignments. He gets flustered when asked questions and does not prepare the class for lecture, just starts with no into of topic. HORRIBLE
This is my second semester with Barth. I got an A in CHE 103 and I have an A in 104 right now, and I wouldnt consider myself great at chemistry. Barths lectures are FAR from perfect, but my advice is to TAKE HIM, and get a tutor. He gives reviews before every exam and lets you use a notecard on each exam. His exams are VERY straightforward.
Dr. Barth's lectures are all over the place, he doesn't take the time to prepare for the class and goes on rants about random topics. He assumes everyone knows the information and in turn doesn't teach it. His homework is very intense and long, do NOT delay on starting it and utilize the tutor available, it'll help. You pretty much teach yourself.
He is probably the most unorganized professor I've ever had. Online classes are the biggest challenge when you have an unorganized professor so he's making this semester dreadful. Doesn't like answering questions and can get snarky as if you should know things already. There's no intro to any of his lectures, he just starts writing on the board.
people say he's really disorganized, i'm not sure about that. i think he goes through each equation really well and in depth, explaining each step. he's also so sweet and approachable. he even let us retake test questions that people did wrong on, which is a lot for a college prof. I hate chemistry but still like him. just a lot of homework on OWL2
Dr. B is a nice+extremely knowledgeable dude, just not a great teacher. IDK if it's from being remote, but I had to teach myself EVERYTHING w/the HW. Lectured w/no intro, talked like we just knew the material+often failed to actually TEACH us. He was lenient w/exams w/the weirdness of this semester, but it was a struggle getting through this class.
He's really the best person you'll ever meet but his class is hard to follow, especially online. He's so sweet and nice, but his class put me to sleep (and I like chem)! Tests are reasonable and the homework is doable but takes a lot of time and studying with friends. Overall a good class and professor but I wouldn't take again.
Dr. Barth struggles to teach lectures. He provided my course with an extra tutoring sessions from the tutors who sit through his classes. Without them a good grade in his class is not achievable.
You can tell he knows what hes talking about but its difficult to get anything from his lectures. Seems like a caring and nice dude but wouldnt recommend him as a professor. Homework assignments take hours (seriously) to complete, I recommend splitting up the time you spend on them. You cant cheat your way through this class.
Single worst professor I have ever had. He did not care whether information was conveyed or not. Poor job presenting material. Method of tests was unorthodox and poor. Graded test like an Olympic Judge (1-10 for a given question) with no rationale. Completely goofy, unprofessional, and presenting minimal value for the course. Awful.
Dr. Barth is very nice and wants all of his students to succeed; however, he did not do a well job teaching. I self taught myself the entire course and struggled to get an A-. Final is optional, but take it! The final is the only reason how I got an A-
