excellent instructor. very reasonable and fair marking.
ummmm leonard cohen for 9 weeks straight? no thanks.
Made me appreciate Canadian Lit. Loved the use of Pop Culture. Too Much Music!
Very helpful. Loves what he does!
Unclear expectations for assns, little *teaching* (just in-class discussions)
coolest, greatest teacher at Doglas. Kinda cute too.
laid back, funny, provocative, lambent
terrific teacher. Nice eyes
A teacher likes music.

Unorganized guy who gives off a hippie vibe.
The bad news: Hopelessly unclear about assigments and cannot clarify without reiteration. Avoids lecturing by orchestrating unhelpful group discussions. The good news: Super nice person and very learned, fair, and considerate. He should lecture more.
I think the music is a great idea. It makes the class more fun even if you dont like the type of music. It makes you think about different things and look at the stories in a different way. And groups are good to get ideas from other people.
Learn to take initiative pple! For once we have a prof who's not a nazi, and most of you complain! Just follow the 7 catagories! The class was a great mix of Geog., Hist., Soc. with some great creative assignments and good tunes.
approachable, modest, followed course outline closely--predictable, well prep., reading material thoughtfully chosen, good use of video, music to enhance story ideas, encouraged students to think & give ideas, no spoon feeding, thank goodness!
He's enthusiastic about English and History.Didn't like choice of books. If you know history or are from a certain culture, the books would be easier to gain meaning from. He's pass-ionate re course content, but class work,at times seemed unhelpful for exam
Great mix of reading material. Loved the group discussions (when I was with people who actually wanted to discuss.) Really enjoyed the use of music, history and geography to lend new perspectives to reading material.
great prof, if you don't succeed in his class thats 'cause you are a bad student..simple as that
Great teacher and very approchable. There's no such thing as an easy English teacher, though. Read the material, ask questions, listen to the lectures, and be prepared.
best prof I evuh had. simple as that
great guy. funny. understanding, and he is a fairly easy marker. I would recommend him to most students
fantastic professor -- funny, provocative and passionate. Take him!
Very enthusiastic & approachable guy. There is a lot of reading to do, but he goes aver all of the pieces in detail. Will give you excellent feedback on papers-BEFORE and after they're due! Fun and interesting class that you get an arts credit for.
He is a great teacher, he likes to talk about sex too. He is sexy, and his class is good :) I liked all the books we had to read. Gives u essay questions before the exams to study. Nice guy, easy marker

fun and entertaining. Least organized instructor i've ever had though. Fairly easy and an easy marker.
Good teacher! Fun, easy and very informed about the world.
Fair marker. Interesting class, but not easy to get a good mark if Eng is not your first language since students will have to do 3 in class essays and one research. 1 group presentation is worth 25%, so make sure you take his class with your friends.
oh my god dont take him
Easy to get a good mark. But he makes you do stuff in groups.
who said english is easy when you've to write so many inclass essays. well: 3 inclass, 1 research & a group presentation, not bad afterall. i like him. my writing really improved! take him & you won't regret. one of the good prof.
Hey Dr. C! wish u were teaching back at UBC especially your children's lit course!
realy wants you to do well in his course. If you go to his office hours and take an interest to what he says in class you will do fine
I really enjoyed taking his class. Awesome teacher. I highly recommend him for English. Very fair marker. If you do your work and listen in class you will get a good mark. Also, awesome choice of books that we read.
Awesome prof. I'd recommend him any day. Personally, I dislike english but he made this class worth taking. If you read the material, go to class, and attempt effort you will do well.
he is so boring. dont take him
Fanfabutastic professor. This guy is knowledgable AND helpful. But he does make you think, and apparently some people around these boards don't like that. However, if you like to have your preconceptions challenged, this dude rocks.
This guy is a total bozo. I give him credit for being passionate about his area of expertise but the books we had to read were lame, our assignments were lame, and he's often opinionated and unclear
He is very helpful and a very generous person.
Very scattered and sometimes seems unsure of what he's teaching. Could be a very interesting class, but needs more organization. He's a really nice guy though and tries to make things interesting.
Great teacher, made class interesting. He's very passionate, and he makes you think critically. He's a little disorganized.
Pretty good teacher, Tough course though, disorganized too
I got an A+...it was easy as heck. But he was really disorganized, and I had a hard time staying awake.
this guy is very amazing, so don't listen to the dumb-wads out there who can't even spell their own profanities.
he was one of the most helpful and funny profs I have ever had. kept up my interest all year. will definitely take himn again. kinda cute too
I found this lit. course to be one of my fav courses taken yet! I owe this to the prof as he consistantly made class interesting and fun. He was humourous, but we also got down to business, had a lot of class discussion, + learned things. I would definitely take another course with this prof.
supa! will definitely take his course again, man.
Best English Prof I've ever had...teaches you stuff and you don't even realize you're learning. The song lyric analyzation is perhaps one of the most effective comprehension tools I've ever come across...If you like English TAKE THIS COURSE!!
Great guy! Very friendly and funny. Never boring at all. He is a VERY UNDERSTANDING person. If you just listen to what he says, you'll do great. Very open to many different ideas. Had to do group presentations...they are fun. Take him if you can.
i never liked english before , but roger makes it cool
what an amazing dude! The stuff you learn, awesome. some hard work, though, but definitely worth it
If you hate english and can't stand it, this teacher is the right pick. I will always hate english but I actually learned a lot of things and did fairly well. As long as you have good grammar and can write clear paragraphs, you'll do fine. Workload may be heavy of you decide to do the readings, which I never did.

Rodger is an awesome teacher! he grades a class how it should be graded: a first year class is graded as a first year class etc. VERY understanding a little boring but DEAL WITH IT just read the book and look at the sheets he gives you to study
BEST ENGLISH PROF, YOU'LL LOVE HIM
I dropped this course because I found Dr. Clark to be very biased. He strayed from one topic to another and was not very clear about what he wanted. Also, if you didn't answer how he wanted you too it wasn't good enough. I found him hard to approach and unwilling to be helpful.
What is the person below me talking about. He's an approachable teacher and is open to many ideas. If you dropped his course, you must be a lazy first-year student whos looking for an easy grade. Suck it up and write your paper, it's not a hard class to do well in. I got a B+ with minimal effort.
Easy, nothing to do, just sometimes boring because there's so much to talk about but little of it essential to the midterm and exam. Boring when unnecessary tedious. Otherwise, very nice and helpful. Subtle humor. Not a bad english teacher.
very understanding and helpfull prof... take his class! u wont regret it!
Clark was my favourite prof from first semester at Douglas! We talked in his office about Radiohead and Dave Matthews for an hour one day. Always willing to help with anything. I was very sad that I had to drop his course due to program constraints.
TRUELY THE BEST PROF I'VE EVER HAD. HE'S PATIONATE AND MAKES THE CLASS INTERESTING. I HIGHLY SUGGEST TAKING ANY ENGLISH CLASS WITH HIM. YOU'LL LOVE HIM!
Roger was pretty good. He knows a lot, though he always says, "I don't pretend to be an expert." He's got his opinion, but he was extremely welcoming to other opinions and encouraged class discussions. The class was interesting (but could be boring) and really easy. Take it if you like literature from around the world.

really super professor. passionate and intereseting and loves music. cute too.
a tough marker
Awesome prof. Very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Challenging course for some but if you make an effort he will notice and marks reflect effort as much as quality of work. I learned more in this class than I ever expected and feel much more confident in my writing ability. I got my money's worth here.
roger is the best teacher ever..he made me like english!! his class is so interesting...with interesting discussions....hes so knowledgable and an easy marker.........ROGER U ROCK!!!!!!!!
This was an amazing expereince. Roger has designed a very interesting and relevant course. If you pay attention, do the readings and take note of what is emphasized, you will do so well. I loved him and the course. I wish he taught English Lit!
Roger is one of the most interesting professors in douglas. Although english is a hard class, I really enjoyed his lectures. He tries to keep the students interested in the subjects and besides teaching english, he makes you to think differently and see things from different aspects as well. Make sure to attend his class becuase you will enjoy it.
This is only my first semester at DC... but Clark is by far my best teacher. His classes are interesting and fun, and yet you're stil learning!!! it's amazing!!! I recomend him if you're taking Creative Writing, or any other English course
He talks a lot and sometimes goes on for too long but does occasionally play movies. Good guy!!! His midterms are long. And sometimes he criticizes people's outlines in front of the class. But for the most part he is a good guy!!!
Roger is a good prof, but sometimes goes on too long in his lectures. Theme tends to be on rhetorical analysis and evaluation, not as bad as it may sound. Sometimes it seems he starts teaching history instead of academic writing, but he is clear in what he talks about. His essays are ok. Presentations are easy, pretty much guaranteed an 80%.
i really liked roger and i really liked his class, but I felt that I learned more about music history and angelina jolie than I did english. Nice man, really passionate, but he marked me presentation on my oral presentation skills as opposed to my ACADEMIC WRITING skills. Kinda peaved...good class overall. Would take him again in the future.
He puts alot of the precentage of your mark on class participation, and if you don't have a very good class, there's lots of awkward silences and stuff.. overall I think the class was just awkward. Lots of the discussion was forced. The small amount work he does assign he asks for in 18 point font so he can put it on the overhead :(
Like most proffessors, you just have to get interested what they are interested in and learn how they talk, write, etc. The first couple of classes are a bit akward, but he's a good prof with some really great content.
If you're an English major, or if learning English writing methods is important to you perhaps you shouldn't take his class. If you need to take English because of your program Roger is your best bet, I'm an ESL person and i got a B in his class, i speak fluently but my writing is not as good, taking roger saved my GPA and got me though English.
Roger Clark is awesome. We loved him, he is so passionate about writing that makes you pay more attention to his lectures. He is also very smart one of those that knows very much, views disscussion from very different aspects. And this is good becuase you get encoraged to think critically and not accept everything easily. A very cute guy loved him
Academic writing sucks but I definately suggest taking the course with him. His marking is really fair and there aren't many huge projects of essays.
he is really bad in teaching and he dosent know what hes teaching.
doesnt assign much for marks but lots of reading involved! doesnt tell you about assignments you have to keep track of that yourself from the 51 page booklet you have to print at the beginning of the class.refers to lots of movies and songs that i have never heard of and expects you to know what he is talking about. not someone i'd recommend.
He sucks.
not really a bad person, but pushes you too much.i sometimes felt like i deserved more than what i got on essays.he is a HARD MARKER. if ur wrining is not really good already, don't take him. this course lowered my GPA.
He is an extremely hard marker.
Very Hard marker!! I cant believe he failed almost the whole class in the essay that we wrote in class
The whole class pretty much failed the midterm. He takes off a .grade for every single spelling error and his comments that he writes on the exam is just cruel. He will not give back home work to allow you to know if you are doing it right, nore does he take the time to talk to students about the stuff they are handing in. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!
this guy is very tough marker & enjoys hurting students (most fail) ... not a nice guy at all... avoid him!!!!
His attitude discouraged me a lot.It is very biased. My hard work didn't get rewarded. I REALLY worked hard and got the worst mark ever.
I heard he was a good teacher and took his class. But, I guess his grading style changed. I got the worst grade ever, even though my friend who took his class before got mostly B or B+. He is not what he used to be any more!! His class became way harder!!!! DON'T TAKE HIM!!!!
I also took his course because I thought that it would be an enjoyable elective. This instructor values 40% for both the mid-term and the final and 20% for participation (which he never gives 100%). If you do not do well with in class essays, DO NOT take this course because there is no chance of doing additional assignments to increase your mark.
His class can get boring, but he is good with providing historical content with literature. not very clear with grading, not bad but not great either. the content of the class was not bad, but he was boring at times.
failure for your own money, must be pretty stupid to pay and screw yourself, books are v.stupid and useless :( waste of time and money, not a nice guy, english could be enjoyable subject though, but not with guys who make a problem

Horrible fails everyone!!
He is ad odd guy but I found him a pretty good teacher. He has a different style of teaching but if thats works for you, then take his class. I have taken him for 2 English classes and I do well in them.
Nice guy, but very hard marker.
He marked lates as absents for me... He is too dull, boring and odd. He will lecture all class, not much interaction, only 1-2 people ever talk to him in class. He cares about the material and works he is teaching rather than the students. Only take his class if you can tolerate listening to him all class and every class.
I put the absolute minimum effort to his class, He talks as much as he can so you'll go to listen. Im an Esl guy so my witting skills are very low i write comas every 10 words or so. He was nice, as long as you attend class and do your assignments at least you'll pass, put some effort and there you go. Not a good teacher for English majors. B- prof
A friendly man who is really interested in what he is teaching. A hard marker. Can be unclear and easily distracted in his teaching. I was really interested in this course but found I did not learn very much. Too bad. His choice in a 600 page epic text that took up weeks of the course should be reserved for a masters or doctoral program.
His class was more challenging than I expected for a first year class, but I learned a lot. Before taking lit, I expected it to be really boring, but Roger was so enthusiastic that it actually turned out fairly interesting. I'd recommend that you take general notes about what topics he discusses - helpful predicting essay questions on the exams.
brillant man. so smart it is almost freaky...as long as you attend class, and follow his instructions for papers you will do fine!
He is really into literature. He seems to really care about the student's feedback. I honestly believe that if you got a bad grade you must have been skipping class or day dreaming during class. it's a super easy course, but it can be dry at times.
I have mixed feelings about him. But you can always give a try!!! His book choice is not the best, unless he has changed something, not much joy there, i like things funny!!!
This was my least favorite teacher ever!! Courses are based 70% on midterm and final and he marks really hard. Soo hard to take notes, rambles on, and you cant make a peep in his class or he will OWN you! He gets annoyed really easily and hes not very clear. I never should have taken this class. I fell asleep over 50 times in his class.DO NOT TAKE!
hes a very fair teacher and pretty smart guy he knows alot, he talks alot and it can get boring at times but overall hes much better than most of the english teachers at douglas
He is a great teacher. Very passionate about literature and loves talking. I reccomend taking a class with him.
In this class, you will have two assignments both worth 10%. 70% will be determined by your midterm and your final. Which are absolutely ridiculous since you're expected to memorize every short story, poem, song or long form story he assigns. Reading: Unnecessary, he will just re-read it all in class. Don't go to class tired, you will fall asleep.
Not recommended if you need to bump up your GPA! He is a nice man, it's evident he is very educated and passionate about his work, but he expects a LOT from students. He doesn't realize how much pressure he puts on us with the midterm and final. You must know EVERYTHING about EVERY reading. It's a shame, because the course content is great.
although his approach to lectures and assignments was fun (i.e. doing essays and presentations on a movie scene of your choice, analyzing 'the onion' articles) his actual course outline and printed explanations were useless. i think he has a non-linear mind and therefore organizes things in ways that dont make sense to most. 4 essays in course.easy
Oh God! No! never again! I had Roger Clark for a Monday evening,3 hour course...big mistake! I couldn't stay awake! He talks sooo slow and has soo much to say about EVERYTHING, it drives you completely nuts! On the exams, everything is closed-book,you have to memorize quotations and do fantastic on the essay if you dont want your gpa to be ruined!
If you are a slacker student, don't attend Rogers class. His teaching is fine, his inclass essays are challenging, but just read your readings and talk about it in class. Lazy students won't thrive. SIT IN THE FRONT FOR GOOD GRADES. Oh and he is cute in an older man kinda way.
really good and knowleagable teacher. He expects you to work hard but really knows his stuff
Smart but expects way too much from students. Had millions of things to read for each class. Nice guy but regret taking his class because my GPA will not be the same.
very hard marker...should consider carefully before taking him
Previous reviews are right on. Good guy, knows his stuff, but hard to sit through three hours with. Not him, the material....but that's just me. Knowledgeable but difficult to score big points on exams with. Very uninvolved class, mostly lecture....would be better if class was more interactive/engaging
Roger is a very difficult marker considering how little advice he gives to students. There is a lot of listening in his lectures and the information given by Roger is a good guide but as I am not an English major, I needed more feedback than was provided or even available. I would not like to take a class with him again.
Alot of self important people "know their stuff" so I'm not sure what the other meant by that. This man talks for hours about other cultures and things about which he knows very little about, most of his information he derive from Wikipedia. He spends 3 hours talking and very little helping or advising his students.
Roger was an average professor. It is important for you to read his course file very carefully. He talks a lot in class, but as he is talking he gives A LOT of information about the essay topics which helped me out a lot. Take notes and follow his instructions to the period and you will do well. Im horrible at English and still ended up with a B+
Lectures were useless and dragged on forever. Goes off on tangents that have nothing to do with the class.
Roger is a hard marker. He is a good teacher but the material was so boring. He talked for 3 hours and all we have to do is listen it would have been better if we were involved in the topics. It's very hard to keep up with him. Also not an easy marker very tough
This guy is smart, but doesnt break it down well considering this is a first year class. Doesnt like to help his students. Doesn't want you to email him asking for help. Expects us to learn the course through his "course pack." Would not take another class with him.
Roger talks a lot and his lectures are a bit drab but I would recommend him. I don't like his no electronics rule, I think its silly. Overall he is a fair marker but expects a lot. Do the readings, pay attention and you will ace this course.
Horrible prof. Regret taking class with him. Never take a class with him in life.
Such a terrible prof. Hardly put any effort into actually helping students. Favours students that talk a lot.
outlines are ambiguous with no defined guidance. marks hard and unfairly due to poor clarity of outlines. At times comes to class poorly prepared and fails to stay on track with his course material,as per written outline.
Roger is very organized. He gives you VERY specific instructions and if you do everything he says... you will not only pass.. you will do very well. He is a hard marker but at least you know EXACTLY what you need to do to improve. He gives 10 marks that are straight up gimmes. I got C's in the first half of the class and A's in the second half
Roger is a great professor, talks quite a lot, but is interesting and insightful. You definitely need to participate and do the expected reading. No spoon-feeding here. Class outlines and course files are very clear and helpful. He is very easy to get hold of, responds to emails right away, and is easy to talk to. Work hard & you'll do well!
Think twice taking his class. Partial to students who talk. Syllabus is not organized. Teaching style is confusing and disorganized. There might be a method to his disorganization but it's not to the student's advantage. Very obsessed with Cambodia. Class is more a history class than a university writing class. Again think twice before enrolling
It was really refreshing and inspiring to see a teacher so passionate and interested in what he was teaching. Roger marks tough but fair, and is very interested in helping you improve your analytical writing. Classes include lots discussion on readings, and developing theses and topic sentences. Would take a class of his again in a heartbeat.
Horrible teacher ever. Does not teach you English, teaches you a type of English. Which is rhetorical essays aka useless. So do not take his class if you're a first year cause his class is a gong show. He goes off on tangents. He was rude and obnoxious. Oh yeah might I add his 104 page outline that he expects you to read multiple times. HORRIBLE!
Roger is a nice guy, very approachable and has a cute old man charm to him, but beware he goes off topic A LOT. He gives a lot of mini history lessons in his lectures. He also has a thing for poetry, so if you write poetically he will give you an A for sure. Reviews a lot in class and lectures can be boring but he gives ample breaks.
Poetry lectures are dynamic including videos, music, etc. Very up-to-date with today's culture, as he included Kanye West's Ultralight Beams into our course, coinciding with the concert tour. His course pack provides an abundance of resources and examples. You must build a strong argument and provide evidence for all poetry essays and group work.
I was excited about going back to a first year class, boy was I wrong. I felt like I learned more about how to search for YouTube videos than analysis at all. Curriculum was NEVER brought up in class, just long disorganised opinionated tangents. Not a single student read the required reading one week because we didn't even know and he ranted.
Fully recommend this class if you're into listening to irrelevant topics for 3 hours. He is nice as a person tho, favors students. We talked and took notes one day on the history and languages in India and he drew a crude map on the board and talked about where's he's traveled the entire class, a class about analysis.
I don't mind him at all. The people who rated poorly were probably made to take the course for a program they're in a have no real respect for the subject itself. He does go into MASSIVE tangents but for the most part they're funny (unless they're last minute!!). He's very respectful and if you email him with concerns he replies. But hard marker!
English is my second language, but I enjoyed participating in all his classes. He is very organize, understanding and knowledgeable. If he knows that you are really working hard and "Trying" he will actually help you to achieve a good grade. This class might seem boring, but it is Not! he collaborates all our writings into our generation.
Most horrible teacher, expects way too much from the students. I have known 5 students from the same class who had no idea of what he is teaching including myself. Course outline is confusing. I strongly recommend not to take classes with him especially if it is your first year in college. Don't don't don't take classes with him.
There are only 3 writes the whole semester. He is a very tough grader and expects a lot from his students. You NEED to show up to class because attendance matters. I have left halfway through some of his classes and he marked me absent for the whole class and took away marks. I didn't learn anything and feel like my writing skills didn't improve.
Get ready to read a ton since Roger expects you to finish a novel in 2 weeks. All 3 of the 4 novels are sexually disturbing (odd theme all semester) and fairly long. However, Roger provides great feedback on essays and cares about his students. He is also a easy marker and his midterm & final are easy. Dont skip or the else you lose 5% each time.
I had this teacher a couple semesters ago and am surprised by his low rating and negative comments. Roger has a PhD in English Lit - he's an academic guy and not everyone's cup of tea, but he obviously knows what he is talking about and how to teach. In all my years at DC he's not bad. Google rycspace to see his blog/course syllabus. Good luck!
I was apprehensive taking this course because of the reviews but I genuinely enjoyed his class. He made his lectures very engaging by including pop culture into modern day poetry and I thought that was very cool. The overall course was very interesting. The only problem is that he can be a picky marker but my writing improved by the end!
Roger is an excellent prof I've had him for two courses. He really enjoys speaking so be prepared to listen, not everyhting he says is relevant but he really loves what he teaches. Uses cheap course pack and his personal online website, both very helpful. Very nice guy, marks fairly easy, and is very approachable. Would reccomend.
The amount of stress I had during my time with this prof was intense. Loads of required reading, a Netflix series you're forced into watching and lots of writing that I didn't understand how to do. Lectures were long, with no early dismissals and one 10 min break (if he remembered). I also could not comprehend his academic teaching style.
Roger is great! You can tell he's really genuinely passionate about what he teaches which goes a long way. Seeing him get excited explaining nuances of poetry was enjoyable. His website is chock full of good info if you're willing to go looking for it and he mixes pop culture and modern music in with old school poetry to great effect.
Roger is great! He does like to talk quite a bit, and he can get very sidetracked during his lectures which can be a bit confusing, but he's overall a great teacher. Can be a bit strict, but as long as you listen and participate you'll do great! Also very willing to help outside of class, and gives good feedback on term papers. No books required
He's really unclear about what's actually needed of you. He changes his mind very often. His website is so confusing.
Although his methods for writing about poetry can be confusing at first, your job is simply to adapt and learn how to write an essay in the style he's looking for. If you did well in Grade 12 English, you'll do well in his class. Participate in class discussions - he values unique ideas and individualism. Also, if you're unsure, ask for feedback!
If you are taking this class... get ready to try and navigate the most complex website you've ever seen. I didn't know I was taking a coding class, thought it was English. Super confusing teacher and wants you to buy a bunch of videos off of youtube and amazon throughout the course. GPA killer
This class was entirely "here my website, best of luck to you". He has three different e-mails and expects us to pay for the class where I am not being taught, pay for 3 DIFFERENT TEXTBOOKS, and PAY to watch movies and learn for myself off of this website that makes no sense! DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
Don't do it. Honestly, I would have rather taken 10 other classes at the same time than taken this class. He has his own website which is a FREAKING DISASTER, multiple due dates for the same assignment and gives little - no feedback. Very old school, one of the worst teachers I've had at Douglas. DO. NOT. DO IT!!!!
Choose a different prof if you need this course. Nice enough guy, but class is "taught" through his website, but he doesn't actually teach you. Tells you to "learn" by reading other peoples work. He is unclear on what he is looking for and the website is A MESS and doesn't offer much help if you need it. GPA killer. Save yourself the head ache.
This guy is the most unclear, uncaring prof I've ever experienced. You learn solely off of a website that he created which gives you a stroke when attempting to navigate through it. He tells students not to contact him as he is allegedly super busy. Would not recommend this class to anyone. Complete waste of money/time and learnt nothing new
unfair marker. He gets a professional marker to mark your essays so you basically get roasted twice. His website is the most unclear thing. He doesnt teach, and you dont know what he expects. He is not willing to help you and all he does is give attitude when you ask for help. Save yourself. Dont take his classes. Hes horrible
absolute worst prof I have ever had in my life. Hes horrible. Doesnt teach anything, expects you to know it all by yourself and wont help you. Literally told us that he doesnt want to help us when we need help and to not email him. He goes off topic so frequently and you have to teach yourself from his stupid website which is so unclear. just no
