very kind, but disorganization can be a headache.
It was a very boring class, but very helpful. fulfills a general education requirement, and teaches very efficient argumentative skills for writing future papers. He's willing to take time to help anyone, thoroughly, and is a generally very nice guy.
Cares about his students deeply. Is willing to give you an A as long as you ask for one basically. Recommend to anyone.
Way cool, lots of class discussion. He explains everything really well and gives lots of attention to each individual student. Not super easy though, you've got to write good papers and know the material fairly well. Makes class fun and is genuinely nice.
He's such a good man, but he is an AWFUL teacher. He wont' give full grade unless u write what he wants. He would never make grammar or style corrections, just content. His theories are a pain in the neck. and gives then as if it was doctrine...Hated the class and the teacherm though he's a nice guy
Roger is unlike any other teacher. He is so willing to help you get a good grade in the class. he will let you turn in 4 or 5 drafts per paper, and he'll assist you will all of them. He is particular about the content of the paper, but that's how good ideas are learned, by imitation.
Great class that helped my writing a lot. It was a lot of work and a challenge. He is a very helpful teaching and interested in helping the students. He is particular about the content, but if he sees that you're putting in the effort, you'll get a good grade.
He is a really nice guy, but not a very good teacher. We didn't really talk much philosophy... besides his own bizarre philosophies. My writing didn't improve even though I got good grades on my papers, and whenever I'd go in for help, which he was always willing to give, I came out more perplexed
If you are willing to work, he will help you improve your writing. Papers are turned into drafts. If you are looking to learn about philosophy and philosophers, take an intro to Philosophy class. If you want to improve your philosophical style writing, take Phil201!
Roger is a great guy. Get to know him. If you are in his office and in constant contact with him your writing will improve. My writing has improved so much. Class is pretty random and the papers are sometimes tough, but he will help you a ton.
Bro. Cook is a really nice guy, and really flexible with grades, however, I did not learn a darn thing about philosophy or writing! I felt like I took a huge step backward, and I am a freshman in college. If you want an easy A, you've found it. If you care about writing, class organization, or learning philosophy, find a different class.
Anyone can get an A in the class. You can turn in most papers as many times as you want to get a better grade. To those that think it is not philosophical, guess what? Its 150! Take higher level courses if you want to do high philosophy.
Loved his class, it was pretty easy. I only used the textbook once for an essay, but outside of that his lectures are so good you don't need to read. Or, you could read and not go to class if you'd like. All tests are take-home except for the final.
I found the class pretty interesting and there were no tests so that was excellent. It was a writing class, so obviously we had a few papers but he lets you turn in as many drafts as you want and gives specific comments on your writing. As long as you try in this class you will probably get an A.
one of the most helpful teacher's i've ever had, he eas always willing to come before class of stay after to help and insisted that we call him at any hour of the night for help, he dosent sleep
I am not a philosophy-minded person at all, but I liked his class. Midterm is take home. He gives you the essays for the final ahead of time. In class quizzes are easy if you do the reading, because he tries hard to grant you points. A 10-12 pg paper if 30% of your grade, but you can choice an topic you want. Take him if you share his hate for cats
Good Class, the tests were fair, but his grading was difficult to decipher. He does a good job of presenting the law and managing discussion in the class. It was nice to have a 400 lvl class with any major papers.
Best 201/202
Professor Cook is extremely nice. He is willing to help if you ask. HIs lectures are boring; they consist of powerpoint presentations and can be hard to follow. The class was graded on in-class quizzes (difficult to prepare for), a midterm and final (purely essays), and a big research paper. It was more work and I learned less than I expected.
Dr. Cook is a little unorganized and takes a while to get your papers back to you. Then when you finally do get your papers back you can't understand his comments. Midterms are take home which is nice, but he takes so long to get them back to you that I didn't even understand why I missed anything. You also have to write a 10 page research paper th
Cook has no idea what he is talking about. He grades his papers on an absolutely arbitrary system. Extremely unorganized. Most of class we just talked about how to use Microsoft Word and how to correct punctuation. Take his class and you'll see, and regret it.
Cook is a weirdo! He constantly makes awkward comments. I swear he makes up "facts". We didn't follow the syllabus timetable at all. His comments on papers often don't make sense, and he favors girls over guys--especially if the girls are cute. No privacy on papers because everything is posted and responded to on Blackboard threads. Easy A though.
I really liked his class. If you have a smaller class then you get a lot more out of it. I took this during summer, and it was nice to get the credit out of the way while actually learning some philosophy.
Professor Cook is a really easy going guy, really easy to work with. Always willing to help. I dont like Philosophy at all so this class was way boring. Cook just lectures everyday. Each week there is a reading assignment, maybe a quiz. There are 3-4 page written midterms that are easy just time consuming. Also a 10 page research paper.
I felt he did nothing but talk about how much he hated cats...every example he gave had to do with how much he hated cats and definitely has favorites. We didn't follow the syllabus at all and the tests took forever to get back.
Not worth it at all-the guy teaches whatever he decides is the truth-which is often wrong, even according to the book (which he worships). He obviously plays favorites, and grades on a double standard according to who he likes. If you take him, brown-nose like crazy and you'll do ok. You will HATE the word 'Remarkable' by the end of the semester.
Brother cook is a good professor. He wants you to do well. If you want to do well read the essays and ask for his help he is alway willing to help you and makes time for you. Its a philosophy class its different then the norm. He could improve on following the syllabus more. I put my dues in and got an A.
Easy A; it's probably true that he has favorites. I know, because I think I was one of them. He has a mormon bias; to a non-believer it makes the class frustrating. Though I give him credit - He knew I disagreed yet still liked me. He can definitely grow on you.
He was such a bad professor it was incredible. I feel like I am an intelligent person, but that is not what gets you a good grade. Brown nosing gets you a good grade. He is scattered and biased. Do not take a class from him
Brother Cook is amazing! He is so nice and actually cares about taking the time to help out his students. He is also hilarious. The tests are super short and really easy.He likes to give bonus points too on tests and quizzes, so it's possible to get over 100% by the end of the semester.Just come to class and pay attention and you'll do fine.
Pretty simple class. Do the work and you will get the appropriate grade. Your grade really represents how much time you put into the class. I think anyone who put an hour into studying got 100% or higher on the exams. He will edit and comment on your papers for as many drafts as you are wiling to write. I put in 3hrs/week and got a 99% as my total.
I wouldn't say that this is an easy class; Bro. Cook definitely makes you put forth a significant amount of effort to get an A. However, he is extremely helpful and really wants his students to succeed and become better writers. Get to know him and you'll be able to tell that he cares.
I loved this class. I was worried at first about how well I would do/how much we would have to read. This class is extremely doable. Bro. Cook knows his stuff and makes the class really interesting by relating the topics to us. This is lecture based, so lots of ppl found it boring, but he is invested in helping you get an A.
He is extremely helpful, and a great teacher. He asks a lot but is understanding. I would take any class from him.
I took this class to fill the WRT 150 credit, but it was amazing. Prof. Cook was EXTREMELY helpful and caring. Be willing to do the work-which can be difficult-and you will see your efforts pay off. He gives a lot of feedback on papers which helped My writing improve. The class focuses more on ideas than mechanics. I definitely recommend it!
Extremely easy class. I studied way to hard for his tests. They're super easy. Great guy. Explains philosophy pretty well. Makes a lot of awkward cat jokes. A lot of class discussion, which can be annoying in philosophy if you have the wrong classmates. Bottom line easy A, and kind of interesting class.
I love professor Cook. I recommend him to everyone interested in taking either writing 150 or philosophy 150. the class is very small and personal and he is willing to help you with anything you need. honestly, you'd be foolish to not take this class from him. he's the best teacher i've had at BYU thus far and I am so thankful I had him.
I absolutely love Brother Cook! It is a very in depth class where you have to think about things deeply. It is a discussion based class. I love Cook because he is so respectful and wants to help you the best he can. I was able to do well in this class for my first semester at college. It is very interesting and he cracks the class up all the time.
Brother Cook has to be one of the best professors on campus. He gave specific examples of what would be on tests, and the tests were always based on lectures, no surprise questions. He is not only approachable but LOVES when students talk to him. He took time to go over our research papers with all of us before they were due. Funny cat jokes too.
Very unorganized. Had to get textbook off amazon because he forgot to tell the bookstore we need a text for the course. Had to take tests in class because he forgot to submit the tests to the testing center. Monotone voice, mostly reads off powerpoints during lecture. 10 page research paper is 35% of your grade.
After years of being in school, I have never had such a bad professor. Yes he is easy to talk to, but he doesn't care what you have to say. It is his way or no way. He doesn't stay on topic, and his lectures are so boring. This class was a joke and the worst class i've ever taken. I highly recommend not taking any course from this professor.
I have attended BYU for many years. Roger Cook is by far the worst professor that I have ever had. His lectures are disorganized. He is a nice guy, but if you are not a philosophy student he will ignore your comments or openly demean you. Tests are not comparable to what is taught. Tests are obscure. TAKE THIS FROM A DIFFERENT PROFESSOR IF POSSIBLE
Bro Cook is a nice guy. He'll do his best to help you out. His lectures are not always riveting but all his notes are online, so you can easily go back over them. Reading isn't necessary. The tests are sometimes obscure. His cat jokes and personal examples are weird. Average teacher.
easy teacher, took this class to fulfill a GE. Just write what he wants (he'll tell you) and you'll get a good grade. Put forth a little effort and you'll be sweet.
Professor Cook is the best instructor I've had at BYU, and I graduate next semester. I wish I could take every class I have remaining from him. He literally does all he can to help you succeed in his classes short of just making the course uselessly easy. He is so good at answering questions. I learned so much in his classes.
Professor Cook is one of the best at BYU. Take this class from him. You won't regret it. His tests are very straight forward and he will really help you out in any way you need. Tons of office hours and he will help you with anything you need. Didn't buy textbook, missed 30% of classes, still got an A-. More importantly though you'll learn lots!
Brother Cook is amazing. So willing to help. Taught extremely subjective material in an objective way. Got us thinking. If you're afraid of challenging your faith with the views of people of different beliefs, don't take the class. But I loved it because it strengthened my faith has helped me to relate to people of different beliefs.
Brother Cook is well-intentioned, but sometimes his teaching style is difficult to follow. For me it has been quite a challenge, but I know other students in the class understand him fine. I go through the power points that he uses after every class to make sure I am familiar with the material.
Awesome teacher! He's extremely passionate about the philosophy of religion. He gives great lectures and was a huge help with the final paper. I learned a ton in this class and I think it's a perspective on religion every student at BYU you should get. If you like to think deeply about faith please take this coarse!
Amazing man, great teacher, very helpful. Willing to help students with papers and assignments, in fact encouraged us to come by his office. This class was fascinating and inspirational. Take Philosophy of Religion from Brother Cook!
Lectures are long but he tries to make it as fun as possible. He is very loving and understanding, so don't hesitate to ask for help. Papers are rough but he helps you every step of the way.
Freshman year: Cared about students, but class was boring and papers were a matter of figuring out what he wanted. Senior year: Polar opposite. New teacher and a new man. Still cares about his students and class was engaging. He has developed so much as a teacher. I can't say it enough: Phil215 from Cook is A MUST.
I really enjoyed this class. Interesting way to talk about religion. He took attendance but all material is posted on the slides online. Tests were pretty easy, all multiple choice. The only hard part of this class was the 8 page research paper, but he is willing to help you a ton if you meet with him.
Pros: he LOVES his students. He encourages discussion but also points out the main points we need to know for the tests. Basically tells you what to write in your research paper to do well on it. Cons: 100 points total, so every point counts. He will take off points for tiny things on your papers (I got a 4.98/5 on my research outline).
He really cares about his students & wants you to do learn a lot & do well in the class. There isn't a lot of work, just one big research paper that you work on the whole semester but he helps you a ton with it and so it really was not bad at all. His tests are straight forward & multiple choice. This class was a solid choice to knock out a GE.
I took this class for GE credit and it was probably my least favorite class I have ever taken. Dr. Cook is incredibly intelligent and is very passionate about the subject, but philosophy is just not my thing. Lectures tend to drag and blend together and the research paper (the majority of your grade) is killer.
This class was easy and engaging. Cook really cares about his students. The only difficult part was an 8 page paper. He encouraged office hour visits, so I came once a week for help on my paper. He helped me find great sources, put together an outline, and make sure my paper was well written. He's a great source for any with religious questions.
Amazing lectures. Loves to interact with students. If you are taking it for a GE, it is worth taking; he might even just make you fall in love with philosophy. 8 page paper is a little intimidating but not awful; I did it over summer term and I was fine. This man is the best!
Professor Cook is very well intended but this class is super dry. His grading seems to have no rhyme or reason attached to it. Based on the reviews, I was really excited for this class but I dreaded going to this class because it felt like a complete waste of time.
I am really glad I took this class from Brother Cook. I am not usually the type of student to interact with a professor but he was so accessible and I got a ton of help from him. There is an 8 page paper but he helps you prepare so it is not hard. He will make a lot of comments on papers but does not doc too many points. Great class!
Excellent lectures, evocative philosophical problems, AND AN A+ MUST. He is always enthusiastic about philosophy and likes to help his students. Just take his class for GE, get ready to enjoy wonderful ideas from classmates, and meet with the professor no matter when you have trouble with the outline, the 8-page paper, or the final. Harrison
Professor Cook is amazing! He truly cares about his students and wants them to succeed. He's easy to contact, always willing to help, and so understanding. Not to mention he is a genius! This class had me thinking about the world in a completely different light. Wonderful professor and class!
This is a Mormon apologetics class, not a philosophy of religion class. Cook has good intentions, and works hard to help his students succeed, but his definition of success is justifying your/his testimony of the gospel. If you want a professor that actually pushes on your assumptions and wants you to grow as a philosopher, look elsewhere.
What Bro. Cook did great was that he made you never worried about grades but motivated you learn and think deeply, especially the digital dialogue assignment. Compared to other GE classes, the contents in this class are super easy and interesting. He is also very smart, kind, and understanding! 120% recommended!
Awesome class. Do everything during the semester that you need to and the class is fairly simple. I had such a high grade going into the final that I only needed a 26% to keep an A. There is a good amount of reading, but they are just to learn. 2 one-page papers, one big research paper on your own topic, attendance/participation, and the final.
Brother Cook's class turned out to be my favorite class of the semester. In lecture, he does a great job helping students respect a wide variety of viewpoints and seek truth among them. He cares about students and often encourages them to see him in his office for feedback on their papers. As the cherry on top, he's a very entertaining storyteller!
Brother Cook is amazing! We had a research paper that we worked on during the semester and he was always willing to help out. I personally struggled with the material, but lectures are very interesting and you can learn a lot by taking good notes. Overall he loves what he does and I recommend taking his class.
He's a great teacher, difficult course material. I would recommend this class for the CIV GE. He's a really likable guy that really just wants to help you understand basic philosophy.
Brother Cook was one of my favorite professors this semester and I was able to bond with him! He definitely cares for all his students and gives everyone a fair chance to earn the grade they deserve. The research paper heaviest graded assignment but the quizzes still matter since they were only 4 questions. Great class!!
I loved Roger Cook! There is a major research paper but it was fun to write especially because he sat down and made the outline with you and followed up. I would 100% take from him again, I wish he taught more than 201 and 215 as he is awesome!
Honestly, super boring. I have a 3.99 GPA and was struggling in this class cuz the quizzes were so particular. Don't recommend at all.
TAKE THIS CLASS. The quizzes are open-note. The final exam was open-note. Prof Cook is super, super kind. If you need a grade changed or some help he is very open to meet with you. The class lectures are boring, but you can do hw for other classes and he doesn't care. Compared to your other options for GE professors, Prof Cook is extremely easy.
If you don't do well on timed tests this class is NOT for you. Cook was very accessible throughout the year, and was always willing to help. The issue that I ran into was that his weekly quizzes were pretty difficult, due to time limit, and are worth 36%. Essay and test heavy, with a10pg essay, worth 40%, but that and the final are pretty easy.
Always accessible outside of class, and encourages visits to his office. Class is mostly graded on a 8pg essay, and weekly quizzes (open note, but timed) given in class. Overall a great guy that cares for his students and is more than willing to work with you to boost your grade at the end of the semester as long as you have worked hard throughout.
Bro Cook was a super awesome professor. If you are stuck with anything in his class, he will help you! He is very willing to help his students succeed, and I definitely would recommend taking his class.
Roger Cook is super nice and his class is pretty easy. His lectures were super boring and he mainly talked about philosophy of religion. He has some weird ideas and always feels the need to take down other religions. I found it hard to do the class work because of the content despite it all being pretty easy.
I took this class in the summer, so the lectures were twice the normal length, which often made it difficult to stay engaged. Professor Cook explained things well and in an interesting way, and I learned a lot from this class. The quizzes were hard for me, and I highly recommend getting started early on the research paper. He isalways there to help
Professor Cook is a great professor, and VERY knowledgeable about philosophy. His level of commitment to students is pretty rare! He really cares about his students and is super willing to chat or help with paper outlines during his office hours. To be warned, most of your grade rides on very few assignments, but it isn't too bad.
Professor Cook is amazing. He really cares about his field and his students, and really does everything he can to help you succeed. Exams are pretty easy, they are short and open book. There are 3 short papers that are pretty easy too, and one 8 page research page that makes up a majority of your grade. Really awesome guy, would 100% reccomend him
4 midterms, all open book/note/internet, just uses the time limit to help encourage you to study (it doesn't hurt, go to TA review sessions). Lectures were not great, the material just isn't entertaining. 50% of our grade is the paper which means tests aren't the biggest deal. Very nice and helpful but the class structure was confusing
This is a very discussion based class and at times it was a little dry, but if you can push through that, this is a great class and made me fall in love with philosophy.
Super easy. Show up to lecture, copy his slides. Tests are open note and entirely based off of powerpoints. You need to write 2 papers, one short and one a 10 page research paper, but you have all semester to work on it and he grades papers nicely. Super easy class. Awesome GE!
Super sweet guy. Class is easy if you know this one thing: TAKE NOTES BY PHILOSOPHER (keep all things about plato together, all things about stoics together etc.), his tests mainly ask things about specific philosophers so that is important. Tests are open slide too which is nice. Try to take notes in class.
The midterms you will no doubt get an 100% if you go to the TA reviews and take pictures of the slides. All the answer will be on those. You have 4 midterms and a final. The research paper is worth 50% of your grade so good luck. The one bad thing is if you are not on the professor's level of understanding you won't understand.
Also, for the journals, you don't have to be in class. I missed almost every day except the journal turn in and got a grade I am satisfied with. Just look over the PowerPoints that he will go over in that week and journal about them, and the TAs will never know that you weren't there.
Brother Cook is extremely helpful. The large majority of homework for the class was one 8-10 page research paper. This was a lot of work, but taken over the whole semester, it was not that bad, and Brother Cook will help you get everything you need for it really easily. The lectures could be better organized, but it was generally very engaging.
Don't judge Brother Cook too quickly. At first, he seems like an old boring philosophy professor. But he is funny and cares so much. The tests are open notes, so they're super easy. Put effort into your research paper. Go to his office and he'll help you find sources and streamline your arguments. Overall, super interesting class. Would take again
Professor Cook is a great guy and teacher. The class has 5 tests, a research paper, two outlines for that research paper, and attendance. The research paper is half your grade, but he literally prepares you for it all semester and isn't a super harsh grader. If you go to class and do your work, you should definitely get an A.
The classes are pretty lecture-heavy and can seem kinda boring but if you pay attention in class then they can be really interesting! There is a big research paper but he is so willing to give feedback and work on it with you throughout the semester. The exams are all open note and book! If you pace yourself then you can easily get an A.
Easy GE class! DO NOT GET THE TEXTBOOK! He only gives tests based on the powerpoints, which are open note. I returned my rental without opening it once. He does a great job of making the class interesting while not putting too much pressure on memorizing everything about the ancient philosophers. If you are looking for an easy GE, this is it.
His exams including the final are open note and the TA posts a PowerPoint with all the answers. There is an 8-page paper due at the end of the semester but it is pretty easy and he helps you with by grading outlines. I also went in a couple of times to office hours and he proofread my entire paper and told me what to fix and I got a high A on it.
Most boring class & professor ever. I did no work, still got an A, IDK how. Learned no new skills or knowledge. Went in excited to learn philosophy, then stopped coming to class halfway through. If you actually want to learn, take Ryan Davis. Bro Cook just bashes on the trinity and traditional Christian thought, without even going in depth.
If you're interested in a philosophy of religion course that also does apologetics then this is a good fit for you, but if you're just interested in the academic study of philosophy of religion, I would take it from someone else. This is probably the only course where I felt the quality of instruction and material was hurt by being at BYU
Amazing teacher, it is lecture-heavy but engaging. The grading criteria is extremely clear. All tests are open note. Don't buy the textbook, I never read it once.
Roger is the GOAT. Pretty funny dude, love how he lectures by staring at the floor and pacing back and forth in front of the classroom, his philosophical musings flowing from his lips like honey. The class is pretty easy. The tests were open book & note. Lacks tedious assignments and quizzes and whatnot. Honestly a great guy and I learned a lot.
This class was amazing. I really liked the topic of the class. Unfortunately, the professor made it hard to want to come. Lectures were boring, paper was graded very harshly. There was no rubic for the paper and he would count off points for not saying it exactly as he would. I would take this class but with a different teacher
Prof. Cook taught such an enlightening class and was open minded and thoughtful. He's clearly passionate about what he teaches. The class was graded solely by tests and one large paper. The tests are easy and open note, and he gives extremely thorough feedback and lots of help throughout the process that makes the final paper very easy to write.
The course is well organized .He is very passionate about the subject, encourages thoughtful discussion, and brings humor to class. He does a good job making philosophy engaging and approachable.
This class was pretty easy. He will tell you, you need a textbook but he never references it in class so I wouldn't recommend getting it. You only have one assignment and its to write an essay that he makes you turn in a couple if drafts throughout the semester and gives feedback so they're super easy and a couple of midterms that are also easy.
Brother Cook is seriously the best! Cannot recommend him more, very understanding and willing to work with his students.
