He's an excelent lecturer, but very arrogant. Mean towards his students.
arrogant ****
arrogant, unhelpful, mean towards students, an outright terrible professor
Likes showing off how smart he is by making students look stupid.
only helpful act is daily email...arrogant
he's great... enthusiastic and clear
This guy is unbelievably disgruntled when it comes to answering questions. I guess it's because he's not even a professor and he's been here for such a long time, get a hint Freeman your attitude needs some major readjusting. If you like bootcamp take it.
e-z as cake
even though he seemed bad at first, as time passes, he isnt. his tests are jsut like the problems assigned in class. says he will not curve, but it seems like he did. even though he doesnt tell u the answer when u ask a question, he does help u think
hard but really interesting
Easy class, very clear. Here is the basics. He is an awesome teacher but a complete **** at the same time. You will learn the stuff, he is an awesome lecturer. My only tip to students of his is DON'T ASK ANY QUESTIONS! He will ridicule you put you down
He thinks he is funny by putting people down. He is an a** and I recommend to take the class from someone else. He is not approachable at all.
He's a good lecturer but also one very poor fellow whose self-worth seems to come only from proving his intellectual superiority over you. Just take him as a teaching *machine* and don't expect any decent human interaction out of him.
He is a good lecturer and gives interesting info but he assigns way too much work. Its not so hard but it can be annoying when you have papers to write.
an amazing lecturer. One of the best teachers here. BUT he is an ****. Very arrogant. Dont ever turn anything in for a re-grade he'll tear you up. Dont talk during class, He will yell at you infront of the whole class, and then take off points from you
This guy is mean! If you take him, make sure you dont ask him anything or even go up to talk to him, he'll chew you up. He is just plain rude and inconsiderate when it comes to talking to people.
An OK teacher, but i think the course is pretty boring. I should have taken Astro 2 instead. Midterms and finals are really easy, and his grading scale is easy too.
extremely hard class. lectures make sense but the homework is 100 times more difficult. extremely fusterating.
Clear professor, makes it so that you can UNDERSTAND what's being taught in lecture. He wrote the textbook anyway, so he'd better be pretty good at his****.
He's a gr8 lecturer, but his work is so boring. U will find urself missing many assignments cause u will eventually get lost. This class sux and so does he!
Better than Fraser in my book. AWESOME grading scale (ie a 50% is a C).
He yelled at me in front of the whole class for accidentally reading the nexus into his time period. His homework is ridiculously hard and his test dont have numbers its all concepts. He is hard but does have a good grading scale.
He loves his teaching. He has cool demos and like to be humerous sometimes. Tests are ok, make sure to read the textbook (he's the author by the way).
he's a good professor and his lectures are very clear. but material is fairly hard and challenging. you should NOT take this class if you are not a math person.
He's a pompous ass, but sometimes cracks really funny jokes. He hates being asked questions before class begins (he can be kinda mean). DO ALL THE HOMEWORK - it will save your grade. Excellent grading scale. The homework doesn't help you do well on the midterms (which are hard), but use the midterms to study for the final - and you'll be set.
Good teacher. Skips the useless derivations that so many other phys professors do and concentrates on conveying what the student needs to know to solve problems. Tries to be funny (sometimes too hard). Encourages an active class (IE groupwork) and discussions. I would recoment him as a a phys prof to anyone looking for a good one.
I asked this guy a question once, and I decided to never talk to him again. Avoid him and his class.
He is a good LECTURER. Very clear in his explanations and his explanations are thorough enough so that you understand things. I learned about physics. But he is a pompous ass who talks condescendingly to his students, and will tear you a new one if he doesn't like your question. Don't even think about trying to ask him to change your grade!
This guy is a bag of ****. Don't take the class. Don't. It's really hard and is the bane of my existance.
Extremely difficult, self-absorbed, and doesn't realize he's teaching a basic course which most people are just taking for a GE. He tries hard - about the only good thing about him.
by far the hardest tests i've taken in my life. Good lecturer and he definitely knows physics (he wrote the book). Homeworks are tough and will definitely save your grade, but there's really no way you can prepare for his tests
I've had him for two quarters in a row and his lectures are clear and mostly interesting. He has fun experiments during class but his tests are lethal and he is very arrogant. Tests are virtually never representative of the homework and would not recommend taking his class if it can be avoided.
When I started taking his class, I thought he wasn't that bad, but the truth bore down on me as the quarter drew on. Ridiculously hard assignments (for a BASIC physics course). He's really full of himself and his tests are murder. During the final, I was actually saying to myself 'I have no idea what to do here.' Take these classes w/ someone else.
i really enjoyed physics, until i took his classes. hes rude arrogant, and he takes credit for writing the book. HE DID NOT write our physics book, he simply edited it a bit. his tests are 70% of your grade if not more, and they have very little to do with the homework(hw is numeric, test are variable based). avoid this professor at all costs.
Freedman has great lectures (he does relevant experiments in every lecture), however his class is very difficult and he is arrogant/unapproachable. Masteringphysics due 3x a week; class is curved 5%. Exams are HARD!!! (problem solving in terms of variables). Makes attendance at both discussion AND lecture mandatory. Decent teacher; hard class.
I do not like this teacher. He almost refuses to answer questions via email, and he is very arrogant.
DIFFICULT! very good lectures but extremely hard tests and final. inapproachable and arrogant and well frankly i can't STAND him! final grade very unexpected and disappointing
People seemed not to like him here so I thought he would be mean but then I went to office hours and he's really nice and helpful. It is hard though, so I'd suggest studying. I didn't think he was pompous though.
Two midterms, one final, and 25% free points. Go to section, it's useless but you get credit, actually DO the homework, and remember your damn iclicker. The average on the second midterm was on the 40s. Don't expect to ace things. I am still completely intimidated by physics.
Aced the first midterm, failed the second one, aced the final and got an A solid in the class. I would recommend doing all of the homework, going to all of the lectures and doing some of the hard practice problems at the end of the chapters before the tests. Don't worry about failing the second test...everyone who is normal does.
i loved this professor. He was always very prepared, and always tried to make the lecture interesting with jokes and interesting facts. Some people thought he was mean, but i completely disagree, just dont be stupid in class (play video games in the front row etc). Great (but hard) class, great teacher
Tests were mostly free response. and very hard as well including the final which caused me to fail the class.uses variables instead of numbers. expects you to know stuff before class..which is stupid. and explains it poorly..AVOID THIS PROFESSOR AT ALL COSTS!!!
I went to office hours and he told me to come another time. His philosophy about teaching is that students do not understand physics and its his way or the high way. He does not like answering questions and at one point told kid he asked a bad question and then didn't answer it.
Seems full of himself at first. He is very helpful most of the time. Tests are hard, and you must study and do all of the hw to pass.
Aced all the homework and got the most I could get out of the free points. All tests aren't even worth the time. He's only here to fail you out. Grading is unfair, he doesn't curve and he especially won't round your grade even if it's within .5%. I would pay special attention to other reviews like this one. First and last class I'll write about.
seems very full of himself at first (well, he kinda is), but the guy knows physics inside and out. he actually does care. go to his review sessions they help a lot. I got by with a B without a ton of effort. after 3 weeks of physics 2, i can safely say Freedman actually knows how to teach well, though sometimes he can get boringly specific.
Freedman is a strange one. In lecture, it seems like he wants you to learn, but at the same time gives you an uphill battle of unreasonable tests that tend to show nothing. Out of everything covered, each test will only test you on a couple specific things, and it will test you hard. If you mess up on one problem, your grade is screwed.
This man knows what he's talking about and in the beginning he seemed really nice and like he wanted you to learn but by the end he was a jerk. His test were really hard. I barely passed the class with a C. Read the book, do the hmwk and study study study
Roger Freedman is a pleasant and interesting person, but he is ruthless and useless as a teacher. He tries to motivate students by yelling at and insulting them, rather than encouraging and actually TEACHING them. I have moved on from UCSB and now teach at the college level. My students and I have a mutual respect that promotes learning, not anger.
I took CCS physics and I also now teach at the college level. Additionally I have had the distinct pleasure of co-teaching a course with Freedman. He is a physics teacher for physicists. His textbook is excellent and his command of the material is unsurpassed.
Very good professor. Only disliked by irresponsible students who party all the time and flunk his tests. Explains everything very clearly. All his exam questions are in the book and are all easily done
I was afraid to take him because of all the comments but I was surprised that he was actually not that bad at all! He hasn't yelled at the class or been a jerk. Book is good, just master the challenge problems and you'll be fine. To me at least, it's apparent that he enjoys teaching. use cramster.com for homework.
The worst teacher I've ever had. His book shows how to use a stupid "ISEE" solving method but doesn't show you how to do the actual problems. Class attendance is only for the participation points, there is no need to hear to what he says. Concepts relevant to the homework are not explained in the book, class, or sect and tests are unreasonably hard
Good Lecturer.HARD test. Book must be read, and do not ask question unless you read the book and you are prepared. can be nice and can be mean. Follow the instruction because if you don't, he'll tear you apart. STUDY STUDY, test are MIXING QUESTION of concepts which are HARD. (ONLY VARIABLES.. WATCH OUT)
This guy is a TERRIBLE person in general. His teachings are decent and i have learned quite a bit but it doesnt matter when you get screwed for every little thing on the test and it doesnt refelect what you have learned. This guy is the biggest JERK for a teacher ever. I went to his office hours and he was a complete ****. did not want to help.
Overall a decent teacher. He has good slides in lecture, but the homework is very challenging. 2 hour sections are a waste of time. TAKE CLAS!!!! CLAS helped me very much it is basically like another section to go to except you have a great TA
I never had physics before which made this class very difficult. He makes the false assumption that most people have had it, and theres tons that havent. Typically belittles students and makes them feel inferior for asking questions, even in office hours. CLAS recommended. class uses iclicker so you need to go :/
Freedman is a punk. Thinks that he is gods gift to physics and astronomy. Seems nice at first but by the end of the quarter is mean. Don't know why he is even teacher if he doesn't enjoy it. Discussions are the most pointless thing i've ever done in my life. Gives out free points for homework, iclicker and discussion. HIS BOOK IS HORRIBLE!!
HORRIBLE PROFESSOR. Avoid at all costs. Thinks he's god. Looks down upon you for asking a question he thinks is stupid. Doesn't curve at all. Tests are much harder then the hw.
Soooooooooooo hard. Take someone else if possible. Class is too hard in general
Is an engaging lecturer, encourages class participation. Is extremely friendly and helpful in office hours. Very organized and makes course resources readily available. Doesn't hand out easy A's, but if you put in the effort you can easily get a good grade.
his exams are pretty ridiculous. the huge predetermined curve kind of compensates..
Why wouldn't you want to take a class taught by the person who helped write a book used by people all over the world?! He is not the nicest person in the world but he is a very VERY good lecturer. He is always well prepared and can answer almost any question you throw at him. He is strict but fair.
I felt like I had to teach myself physics in this class. Panopoto lectures very broad while the material is very difficult and since its online you can't ask for more details. Ridiculous tests too, not at all the level of the homework. Take someone else!
Toughest class you will ever take. Good lecturer, but doesn't help with homework. HW is ridiculous tough, and tests are ungodly. Google might be your only help in this class. Please take someone else.
avoid this class! lectures are online, but you still have to attend lecture and nothing makes any sense. he makes everything way too complicated, and the tests impossible!
Lectures online actually de-motivated me. Had the hardest time in this class. Much rather prefer a traditional teacher, who lectured in class, instead of wasting a lot of time answering students' questions.
Terrible teacher. Threatens to add more questions to tests if class isn't quiet. Makes you waste money on his reusable online lectures so he doesn't have to teach in class. Rude professor. Take this professor as a last resort. Tests are ridiculously hard, and class is NOT curved.
very hard final, 2nd midterm fairly easy, 1st midterm very tricky. The free response on the final was almost completely from the first midterm and the multiple choice was tricky. Gave us practice problems from all chapters but focused only first few.
Half-decent professor. Doesn't lecture, instead, uses time in class to go over problems. Lectures are watched online and homework is done through MasteringPhysics. Tests were moderately difficult. I didn't find them too hard since I have some physics background. Take a different professor if given the chance.
I have not taken a Physics sequence before taking 1 and 2 at UCSB (no APs or anything). I have definitely learned a lot in Freedman's course. But, he is absolutely too demanding. The final was excruciating, and for most students 3 hours was not nearly enough time. I may not get to take ECE courses next year because of this.
Incredibly difficult professor, but his grading (at the end of the class) is exceptionally fair. If you don't have a lot of experience with Physics material, this class will destroy you. But, the hard work pays off. With Freedman, you will learn an absurd amount of Physics. Don't get too focused on the grade. Do all of the homework and go to OH!
Worst professor I have had at UCSB so far. I downright suffered in his class. Freedman assigns a ridiculous amount of homework that takes a lot of time to complete. He also expects you to watch a lecture before going to lecture. Lastly, don't bother asking a question because he will most likely sass and belittle you without much help.
Arrogant but brilliant and hilarious! Just be humble and admit you know nothing next to him and he will open up the mysteries of the universe to you...
Horrible teacher. Pre-records all his lectures online and makes you pay for it so he doesn't need to teach you in class. In class lectures barely useful. Tests are ridiculously hard.
Took him in 2010. Yeah he can come off as being a little arrogant and iclickers suck but I learned a lot from this guy, which matters most. His exams are fair and very comprehensive. Do your hw, go to class, and do practice problems for exams and you will be fine.
Definitely has the air of arrogance about him, but I can honestly say that out of three physics professors I've had so far, he's been the best. It definitely requires much more time than normal, but the examples he does in his online lectures are very thorough. Homework can be a bit much, but it really does cover what's on his exams.
Freedman should not be a professor, because he doesn't actually teach anything. Instead, he assigns pre-recorded online lectures, which are 1 hour apiece (2-3/week). On top of this, you will receive 3-4 2hour assign./week. Add this to mandatory 2 hr section and clicker questions in class and your week is shot. Condescending and useless. What a guy.
Comes off as very condescending and arrogant. Often spent a quarter to a half hour talking about irrelevant concepts.
His philosophy of teaching is giving you tons of online assignments (3 per week) and mandatory sections doing irrelevant physics worksheets. The assignments don't help you on the exam because exams are in solving letter variables while assignments are done with solving numbers. Also, forces you to ask questions online, so he can show off in class.
The only reason you should go to his lectures is because he gives iclicker questions everytime. He is terrible at teaching, goes over irrelevant concepts during lecture, arrogant, and to top it off, his exams are full of curveballs that you can't really prepare for. Avoid taking this class at all costs.
I really advise anyone who has never has a physics course ever! to read the book, or at leastskim it before you start the class. This class is ridiculously hard if you've never had physics. He assigns way too much homework. Section is useless. and the online lectures are difficult to sit through. Only reason to go to lecture is for iclicker points.
Questions on midterms and final are purposefully tricky and poorly worded. Lecture and section attendance is required because there are assignments and clicker q's. Tests are not curved. Avoid if possible
After taking AP Mechanics in high school, this class was basically review. If you've never taken a physics class before (why are you majoring in engineering), definitely go to section so you can learn the methods to solve the problems.
Not sure why he has such low reviews, if you do all the homework and readings you'll be fine. His multiple choice on exams are purposely tricky but if you review the iclicker questions he has in class you're set for understanding them. Class has a massive pre determined curve.
Pretty standard guy in terms of teaching. His tests are pretty tricky as others say.
Most of the stuff you covered in class was probably covered in HS physics. Doesn't actually lecture in lecture, instead does a lot of examples. A metric ton of homework but it won't really help on the test. Homework problems use numbers, tests are all variable problems.
He is very self-important, but he is a very good professor. It is a lot of work but it really helps. The lectures are mostly just working examples which pertain to the homework as well.
Many reviews say he is self-important, and I strongly disagree. He is probably the most organized teacher I have ever had, although at first he probably doesn't appear that way. Despite his personal organization, I didn't have the interest or TIME to commit to his every other day homeworks. I was sick for two weeks and he was not supportive, either
Great teacher. Knows everything about physics. Do your homework, which is quite a bit but you'll learn a lot. Tests are hard. Might take time to grasp format. Hard MC. Complicated free response. Failed both midterms. Got an A in the class because of the final. Don't be lazy, learn your stuff and you'll do well.
He is a wonderful professor. He knows everything about physics and gets the class involved in his lectures. The exams are EXTREMELY difficult and tricky though. But hard work will ensure that you will do well in his class.
At first this class seems overwhelming with work and Freedman a dictator but he truly is amazing at being a professor and the class was much more manageable with him teaching. All subsequent physics professors I've had, are nothing as good as him and just make physics more confusing or dont teach at all. Take Freedman!
Arrogant yet a good teacher. Lecture would be pointless if not for mandatory iclicker. He will replace the final with the two midterms if you do well on the final. Homework is the most helpful.
The most condescending professor I've ever had. Talks down to you during office hours if you are completely lost. This is a hard class and he acts like it is a breeze. I would avoid him if possible. Honestly makes students feel like complete idiots. I took his class with out ever taking a single physics class and it was super hard!
Unfortunately, this professor makes physics impossible to learn and enjoy because of his teaching strategies. Lectures are online, early morning classes are extremely boring and pointless (yet mandatory), homework is extremely difficult, and tests are just a complete mystery. Good luck to you all
You'll have pre-class reading/online lectures, then go to class to work problems. Either read/watch the lecture (they cover the same material), do the hw, and you'll be good. All the "extra work" is stuff you should be doing outside of class anyways, so it helps you keep up w/ what's going on, and the online lectures are usually only 15 minutes.
He doesn't lecture in class, but records lectures to be viewed online before coming to class. There's not a lot of support in this class, but there's tons of homework. I wish a different professor taught this class.
Online lectures are boring and tend to have unnecessary filler; not helpful for HW or test material. Don't use your cell phone during class, he will pick you to answer a question. He can be very condescending, which is annoying. Tests are very hard and not curved. I would not recommend Freedman.
He's a very good professor! Lectures are online. It helps if you read before attending class. Go to class for iClicker points and to work out problems that WILL help you on tests. He gives a lot of super difficult homework that's worth A LOT in your grade. His tests are incredibly tricky. Definitely not an easy A. Very challenging class.
EXTREMELY HARD TESTS! DO NOT FALL BEHIND IN THE CLASS AND MAKE SURE TO STUDY EVERY DAY. I think the professor is good, the material is difficult and he provides you with a lot of resources to succeed so use them.
He made really hard tests. His final was hard. There is a lot of homework, but it is doable and it helps convey the concepts. Lecture is good because he keeps you engaged with iclicker questions and he directly answers questions that students post for homework.
Wish I had taken high school physics! It's a lot of work to stay on top of lectures, readings and sapling homework! It's a fast paced class that will keep you busy (and stressed). If you have a good understanding of the subject or dedicate good time to study you will get through just fine. Be warned, Freedman can come off as harsh and demeaning...
Do not take him. He doesn't teach, and just posts videos online. The final was hard, and there is a lot of homework. He can come by as demeaning and rude.
Freedman can be somewhat intimidating and expects a lot of his students even in intro level physics. His grading system (preset curve, final worth 50%)and tricky tests make for a challenging class but he is truly a very effective professor. He knows his stuff and is clearly passionate about teaching physics. Put in the work and you will succeed
Worst class ever. I took high school physics before taking this class so I was okay, but he doesn't teach anything. Really the only reason to go to lecture is because he has iclicker questions that are mandatory. Homework is difficult and useless. Learned more at CLAS.
I hated this class. Class is pointless and he barely teaches you anything because he expects you to read and teach yourself based off the book and online lectures. He was not very helpful in office hours and I think it's annoying how he randomly calls on people during lecture to embarrass them. I wish I waited to take physics with a better teacher.
Physics as a class itself is already hard, but study hard and you'll be fine. Midterm and final grade can be either split 30%/50% or 0%/80% which I found very helpful. Lecture is useless, only go for iclicker. Pick up CLAS, read the main pts in book, and go over Sapling HW.
Even though he is a nice person, physics is difficult and he made the class even more difficult. We had to learn a lot of the information on our own.
Freedman is a smart man, but a terrible professor. He doesn't explain concepts in class, which is useless besides iclicker points. He will randomly call on people in class to answer the question, awkwardly putting them on the spot. Highly would not recommend.
His lectures and sections are cool but his exam is horrible. His grading system is crazy, subtracting points for procedures. Avoid this professor if you can. But if you really like physics, take it and test you interest in Physics.
You barely (if not never) learn anything in lectures. Gives you a ton of homework which isn't even covered on the exams. You will most likely fail the first midterm, but you can always try to do well on the final and have it completely replace your exam grade. Or better yet, just avoid taking this class.
This is class is hard, not because of the material, but because Freedman barely even teaches the class. He expects you to just learn everything yourself from the book to be able to do the HW and tests (his class and online lectures cover barely anything). I wouldn't take a class with him again- Oh wait, he's the only option for physics 2. Peachy...
He has really detailed plan for every week, but I never paid attention; he has videos for many class materials, but I never watched; his textbook looks nice, but I only printed the chapter summaries for the final. Super hard to get an A+ if you don't fulfill all of his requirements.
He has online lectures and they are extremely clear. He assigns alot of homework, some of which can be quite difficult. He has iclicker questions which mainly focus on concepts. His tests are extremely difficult, but he has a pre-set curve and he rounds your grade up if you are less than 1 point away from the next grade. He seems to be helpful.
Incredibly difficult class, even after having taken physics in high school. The online assignments through MasteringPhysics are incredibly long, and the tests are nearly impossible. The material isn't taught; you're expected to read through the book and watch video lectures. A grade is given for attendance through iClicker questions in lectures.
Freedman seems nice in lecture. His lectures are fine themselves. His exams are RIDICULOUS, with a grading rubric that makes no sense (I had every exam regraded by a different TA).
Above all he is a MEAN little man. In his office hours he YELLED at me and kicked me out, saying that he couldn't teach me physics, that I had to learn myself... all because I didn't know how to set up a problem. Seems like a funny guy but be warned, he has a TEMPER!!!
His exams are guessing games. Most problems can be solved in more than one way. Choose the wrong way and you lose all points even if your answer is right and your method was more efficient. You also have to simplify your answer so that it matches his answer key. He won't simplify for you and will just mark your answer wrong even if it is right.
He makes physics overwhelming. Hw is due MWF and he insists that you write down your work in a notebook that's checked by your ta in section weekly. iclicker is 4% but beware he calls on random people in lecture to answer them. he expects you to read his book & watch online lectures on each section. if you have a choice bw him and gwinn take gwinn
You are expected to: (1) answer iClicker questions during class for participation, (2) watch about 2 30-ish minute long video lectures per week, (3) do 2 long (1-3 hours) and 2 short (30 mins - 1 hour) homework assignments per week, and (4) read all of the material in the textbook. He's interesting, but expects you to teach yourself.
Freedman's lectures are useless. He doesn't actually teach his students anything, they have to learn everything themselves through the HW and book. The tests are tough and he changed the tests so that they have no problems, only multiple choice, which I think doesn't allow students to show their knowledge. A very slow grader, even with scantrons...
I got A+ in his PHYS 2. I didn't go to his lectures often. But I got 100/100/190 points in three exams. Freedman is a poor professor. But I'm a physics genius.
Beware of rodger! he is not very good when it comes to answering your questions but hey thats what the TA's do right?! Also his lecture videos are primarily what you learn from and his actual lectures are completely random
Class is very hard. Lectures are marginally helpful. Expect to do a lot of self-study. Coming from a background of no physics, both Physics 1 and 2 were extremely difficult. Homework system is very stupid as you lose credit for each attempt you get wrong. You will definitely have to work for your grade. GL
Class is very hard, the lectures don't really add anything yet he expects you to watch videos as if you aren't devoting enough time already. The homework is very long and not very helpful, if you get less than 95% correct you have to do an extra long assignment which makes you worry more about getting the right answer than actually learning.
Final was very hard, and the homework and going to class did not help with the tests. I put in a lot of work, and the tests were still guessing games.
Final was stupidly difficult and lectures were pointless. All he did was experiments and talk about inconsequential things. Every test is open book and open note so he puts insane questions on there. Going to office hours is just getting talked down to.
I did all of the book problems and sapling and clas work and took extensive notes, yet somehow the tests were still extremely hard. If he's going to make tests this hard, there should be curves to the tests as well as the pre-set curve.
His tests are indeed very difficult, but to be fair, I learned a lot in this class. Lot of homework (which is easy) and the reverse class thingy where you watch videos online can be overwhelming He does explain physics very clearly (in my opinion) and physics is definitely a subject difficult to understand. He helps students to do well in this clas
He'll have you watch video lectures and do a ton of homework, then uses the actual class lecture for iclicker questions and physics demonstrations. Even though he allows open book/notes, his midterm and final are incredibly difficult as problems combine multiple concepts for you to get the answer.
Class did NOT mesh with me! HW/iClicker worth 20% and theres a LOT of it! Reminiscent of high school, with a LOT of cheap tricks to make sure you come to class & stay on top of the material. Lectures are pointless except to get iClicker points. Geller is WAY better and actually teaches you! Freedman assumes you have no life besides intro physics!
Freedman is so insanely organized with homework, slides, and video lectures. I went in to office hours once and he was very helpful, but I've seen him during class try answering questions and he tends to be unclear then. Yes, this class reminds me of high school but the homework and outside video lectures really helped with my success.
WORST professor. I already disliked physics and now it disgusts me. He makes you watch a 50 minute lecture before every lecture and attending lecture is pointless, but you have clicker. Sapling hw. Midterm and final are insanely hard. Says only round 7% but actually rounds 15%. Very demeaning. Got 50% on midterm and 40% on final and still passed.
Honestly can say that Freedman is the worst professor I've had at UCSB. Insane amount of work + nearly impossible tests. Biggest problem with him is his complete lack of respect for students. He makes you feel stupid for asking Q's and is extremely demeaning. He thinks he's all that because he wrote the textbook.. he's not. AVOID HIM IF YOU CAN!!!
Friedman is awful he assigns out of class work as if you are not taking a single other class. There is homework like 4 times a week both in online assignments and video lecture. the class takes way to much time out of class.
This is the most difficult course I have ever taken at UCSB. Freedman is a brutal teacher and a assshole when it comes to passing this class. Take it with another teacher. Trust me.
Freedman was one of the worst professors I've had. I don't understand why he is a teacher when he clearly doesn't want to teach. You're required to watch an automated lecture online before every class and then you go to class and he explains one iClicker question for the entire 50 minutes. If you want to do well take physics with anyone else.
Taking his class you need to spend 4 hours on the stupid mastering physics questions each week. Many questions are easy to misunderstand since there will be no picuture. If you had taken AP physics and want to learn deeper instead of wasting your time on basic but massive hw choose physics 2x series in which you can learn more and possibly less hw
Long hours of homework each week where he expects you to pre-read, do the homework, and come to class actually understanding material when he doesn't even teach. Spends half the lectures discussing iclickers rather than focusing on real content. Tests are extremely hard but doable. Expect to do the full reading and hours of prep that he demands
I really disliked him as a person, but he was an organized professor with set schedules for homework and online lectures. He also treated all of us like children with simple rituals like "raise your iclickers" and the "physics mailman". He wasn't helpful outside of class. I personally ended up going to CLAS and reading the textbook a lot for help.
Incredibly hard final, but I learned so much in the course. He was the first physics professor who really forces you to understand the concepts. Lectures aren't that helpful, but the book and homework definitely were. Homework load wasn't fun but I know it helped me in the long run.
Freedman gets a bad rap because his class is HARD. He forces you to put in a ton of work to properly understand the content and though that makes it difficult to get a good grade in the class, it forces you to really learn the material. He knows what he's doing, you just have to be prepared to dedicate a lot of time to his methods. They work though
Freedman is so close to being an amazing professor, but falls short in the worst ways. All lectures of new material are mind-numbing online videos. It's a "flipped classroom" style course, but for physics, it just doesn't work. iClickers are used during the in-person "lectures" so attendance is pretty much mandatory. Exams aren't horrible.
I have a heavy math background and still found this class extremely difficult. Seriously, if you are a freshman do NOT TAKE HIM. He treats students like children, assigns homework like you have no other classes, and his tests are ridiculous. He just wants to trick you and see you fail. He does not care about his students or their success.
Freedman has the class structured so that you'll completely master physics in every aspect, but that means tons of homework and very challenging tests. He knows the material well and can teach it, but has no understanding or regard at all for how the students feel, expecting the students to spend all their time on his class.
I LOVE this mans passion for physics and learning! Its definitely contagious. Although, it seems his goal to make his class the most important thing in your life for 9 weeks. Ridiculous amount of HW. Tests/finals aren't that bad if you understand the material AND basic algebra. I actually loved how unique his tests were. Great lecturer as well.
I really like this man! Some students don't like him because his exams are hard and he has a lot homework, but his passion to physics are really respectable. Also, he prepared sufficient for every lecture and is kind to every student.
SOSOSOSOSOSOSOSO TOUGH
This was my second quarter of having Freedman. Very difficult class and having a flipped classroom (online lectures, in class problem solving) only made it worse. Professor is the complete opposite of concise and has taken 30+ minutes during review sessions to go over very simple problems.
Well, this guy is the epitome of an wasted talent; he can teach, and listening to his explanation, I can see how such phenomena are happening, but this man. He doesn't try. With his ability to teach, he decides to make it hard on purpose for us.
Freedman made lectures mandatory yet never went over anything in class. He expected you to know everything about physics despite never teaching it.
Professor Freedman was very knowledgable about course material, however his class was "flipped", meaning we watched online lectures and solved problems during class. Definitely lots of homework. I found his class very difficult, although I did not have any previous Physics experience. I recommend doing difficult book problems for exam prep.
The classic case of a physicist who forgot how to human. His course page has so much unnecessary information in so many colors and fonts it gives me a headache just looking at it. Fantastic lecturer, but thats about it. Expect tons of repetition
Should stick to research. Not a good teacher
Must watch prelectures before class, worksheets and iclickers (not for accuracy) everyday. 1 homework assignment/class. Doesnt work out problems in class, just explains concepts. Definitely go to clas or go to Vinces clas website for resources to help you. Midterm was a breeze and the final was a slap in the face. Class has a set curve: 85 A
Easy lectures, worksheets and midterm. However, the difficulty of final is definately out of my expectation. I think this professor is making a joke with his students, he must enjoy seeing the shock and confusion on their face when they are doing the finals. The lectures are not informative enough for students, but outclass resources are sufficient
Freedman makes you watch all lectures online before class but fails to explain or demonstrate the concepts within the lectures. Classes are basically only iclicker questions which solutions are not well explained either. He makes the classes mandatory but doesn't make the time in class worthwhile. He's an awesome guy but not a great professor.
DO NOT TAKE PHYSICS WITH FREEDMAN! In his class, we did not go over any topics in class. We were expected to watch videos and learn the material ourselves. In class, we just did problems. I stayed in the class and got a C. I transferred from a Junior college and thought the professors at UCSB would be better. I was wrong.
If only he took feedback about how he runs his class, like he takes feedback to improve his precious textbook. Amt of hw assigned(4x a week) leaves no time to study for exams if you also want to eat/sleep/ pass your other classes, and the exams are ridiculously difficult in comparison to the HW. Lectures are mandatory but useless. AVOID this prof.
Intesting class!
Be prepared for 3 hours of homework 4 days a week, and exams that are about ten times difficult as anything you've ever seen on the homework. He makes you pay to take the homework online... and he's the one who wrote it
Tons of homework, mandatory long lectures, and the mandatory two hour sections were pointless and took time away from studying. Final was extremely difficult and presented problems never seen before. He wrote the textbook which the class is wholly dependent on, and its practice problems are useless since we cant check half the answers...
The way Freedman has his class structured makes it seem like a wild goose chase. You have to attend lecture. where he does minimal teaching and he assigns time consuming homework that is worth almost nothing. You can go to class and do the homework and still have no idea what's going on. Lecture definitely does not prepare you for exams.
Professor Freedman is a fair professor ONLY for those students who had taken physics before. My physics experience in IB program really survived me through this course. His teaching & homework & tests required you to have a solid understanding of EVERYTHING he covered. Homework did help find your weakness. Overall not a great professor, but fair.
Wow, what an awful prof. Avoid him! Gives an insane amount of hw & does NO teaching. You learn by reading the textbook & come to lecture for clicker points (on ? that are ridiculously easy). Only reason I did well was bc of previous physics knowledge. A mean incredibly petty arrogant prof with 0 respect for students. Looks like he wants to hit ppl.
I don't care how smart a man is. If he can not make things make sense, is arrogant and condescending, and cares more about the textbook he wrote than his students, he SHOULD NOT be allowed to teach. So glad I used an online version of his book. He doesn't deserve my money.
I recently got my test results from the previous test and I just cried when I saw them. I spent hours upon hours reading his god forsaken textbook and did the homework several times. They did not help me at all. I did well in my other classes related to my engineering major, but this class is killing my hopes of attending further schooling.
One of the most well-known professors at this university. Also the most arrogant, condescending, patronizing professor I've ever had. Treats all his students like idiots. Daring to ask for extensions/accommodations will net you the verbal equivalent of a slap upside the head. Stay on top of HW, and make sure you do the reading. It's VERY important.
Freedman will not teach you physics. Its entirely on you to watch his recorded lectures before actually going to lecture. Unfortunately he doesnt actually teach during class time, but rather passes out worksheets you must complete. The homework he assigns will take you about 2 hours to complete, three times a week. People take 8ams to avoid him.
If you enjoy crying twice a week doing an insane amount of homework, then take with him. Midterm wasn't too hard but I won't take a class with him again.
Lectures are somewhat fun. There can easily be hours and hours of homework due every single night. You will forget large hw assignments and there is no late work. And better yet, the homework is only worth like 20% of your grade. Be prepared for a midterm and especially final that almost completely decide your grade. Good luck! Avoid if you can.
Thanks Roger, for making absolutely zero COVID accommodations and keeping the curriculum the exact same as when we could actually learn in class. Really taking the whole "make it more difficult because the students are at home" thing to heart.
prof freedman is a nice guy and a good lecturer, but he assigns massive amounts of homework that are based more on math than on physics and the workload leaves no time to study the basic principles of physics outside of his brief lectures. even better, homework is only 25% of your grade, although I spend 8 hours a week on it outside of class. :(
Horrible if you don't have a solid understanding of physics from taking it before. A lott of homework most nights. Exams are difficult because they are all in symbols (no numbers). Class has a skewed grading scale, but is not graded on a curve.
Final and midterm were much harder than hw. I would just read the textbook and do all hw (as many practice problems as you can). Video lectures and synch meetings didn't help. Freedman seems nice until you ask him a question. Treats his students like they are dumb and a waste of time if they don't understand things right away.
Professor Freedman shows a lack of interest in his students' learning. He is frequently rude on Nectir. The class has an enormous amount of homework, reading, worksheets, and lectures assigned weekly. Worksheets are "extra credit" but they are almost useless. Midterm and final scores determine the majority of your grade which are very hard.
Just dont take this class. If you need to take physics, take physics 20 instead. The final (can be) up to 75% of your grade.
THE worst professor at ucsb. He likes to trick students and won't even respond to your emails. The homework was nothing like the midterm or final which is worth 75% of your grade. I can't believe he is actually paid to teach. Avoid him.
Decent lecturer, will answer most questions DURING LECTURE. That's about it for positives. Acts extremely condescending on Nectir. Won't answer most questions outside of lecture time. Tests are ridiculous. Definitely not the worst prof on earth, but not all that much better. HW load is crazy. AVOID IF YOU HAVE NO PRIOR PHYSICS EXPERIENCE.
The exams are extremely difficult, that being said the TAs are pretty generous with partial credit, and I always scored better than I thought. He is really good at explaining things and his lectures and office hours are very helpful. He can be condescending, but as long as you read the syllabus and emails, you will be fine. I thought he was great.
Gives a TON of extra credit (about 7%). The final was graded very leniently with plenty of opportunities for partial credit, probably to make up for its difficulty. Don't expect the exams to be similar to the practice exams. He presents situations you've never seen before, so you really have to drill the concepts rather than memorizing procedures.
Hours of hw each week on mastering physics that differs greatly from the questions on the midterm and final, which together make up 75% of your grade. It is obvious that Freedman has no care for his students. Does not take student feedback into account whatsoever. Do all the EC offered and you can earn a good grade.
final was unreasonably hard
Don't take this class if you would like to 1) have a life 2) enjoy physics 3) maintain a good gpa. This class was the bane of my existence. Dr. Freedman gives out a ridiculous amount of homework and reading, and it counts for NOTHING. The entire grade is composed of mostly the midterm and final, which are impossible. Avoid at all costs.
His course is very very interesting, but you have to watch lecture videos before classes. Insane amount of HW (60 dues total). Relatively easy midterm but the final was worth 50 or 75 percent of grade and was ridiculously hard. He wrote the textbook we have to read. This course is extremely demanding and be prepared for hw. But he offers so much EC
The other reviews are all correct that there is a lot of homework and Dr Freedman can come off as rude. The midterm and final make up a combined 75% of the grade, and are both very difficult. With that being said the material itself isn't too hard if you stay on top of it, and a good grade is easily achievable with hard work.
Assigns ridiculous amounts of homework (assignments 4 times per week), which is worth nothing to the overall grade. Midterm and final were very tough and worth the bulk (75%) of the grade. Assigns a ton of extra credit though, and doing all of it can boost your grade by several percentage points. Avoid at all costs.
DO NOT take physics with him. He simply cannot teach! His lectures and textbook are utterly useless. He has the tendency to act and respond rudely towards students for no apparent reason besides to humiliate and demean them who have otherwise legitimate questions regarding the course--which is perhaps why no ever went to his office hours.
Avoid Freedman at all costs. Midterm and the Final alone are close to impossible to the point where you question whether anything above a 70% is feasible, and these combine for 75% of your grade. There are 4 homeworks per week, each taking a long time. Freedman acts as if this is your only class and constantly condescends and berates students.
Do not take class with him. If you are a physics major, avoid him. He is rude, and looks down on his students.
He makes this course so much harder than it needs to be. For what should be an introductory physics class, you are better off with someone else. I recommend reading from the textbook in lieu of his lectures. Tests are pretty difficult, make sure you really understand the topics conceptually.
Puts down students who ask questions. Makes you buy his own textbook, which you actually have to do because the tests are open book and that's the only book he allows. Worst professor I've ever had at ucsb.
Dr. Freedman is an incredibly unpleasant person. I almost quit graduate school, weeks in, because of an email he sent berating me for an honest mistake. I would, and have since, avoided him at all costs.
Although the class material was straightforward, this professor is extremely rude and bad at teaching. When my classmates would ask questions he would usually come up with a disrespectful/snarky response rather than actually try to help them understand the material.
Worst professor I've ever had at UCSB. Could not teach for his life and impossible final.
