This professor is really nice and also entertaining! He makes the class really fun by watching movies and listening to music each class. Really easy to get an A! His tests are all multiple choice and open book. Great professor and great class!

Great teacher...but he shows too many violent and bloody scenes from movies and doesn't always warn students beforehand so be cautious of that. The class is awesome; I recommend it to anyone who loves film or film scores. Trust me you'll never be bored.

He is an awesome teacher. Because of him this is my favorite class. He is extremely passionate about what he does, plus he wrote the book on it (literally, he wrote the book we use in class!)

This teacher is GREAT. He grades leniently on essays, but his multiple choice can be kind of tricky. However, his tests ARE open book. He makes class so enjoyable, and you watch movies most of the time anyways.

Very nice guy that loves his work. the essays are fun to do and he grades them easy. he has open-book tests that are not hard either.

Its true, hes a great guy. Just generally nice and doesnt try to screw students. Hes very understanding and EVERYTHING is from the book. The final will drive you nuts flipping through the book to find answers but at least theres no need to go to class the whole semester. Easy capstone. Definitely go this route to get that done with.

It is a great class, and it counts as a "I" class. Two short easy papers, and open booked test, they are a little hard and very mind boggling, but if you tab your books by subject it helps.

This is one of the most interesting classes I've ever taken. I actually wanted to go to class! I watched so many movies that I otherwise would have never taken interest in. Papers, quizzes, tests, etc. are super easy and he's a really nice and understanding guy.

Doc Rog is an awesome person, period. I got so many great musical opportunities because of him. His classes are relatively entertaining and laid back, and you learn a lot as well. He was also a great advisor.

What can I say!! Dr. Hick was phenomenal! He's such a nice guy and he grades so generously. 4 exams, 2 papers, a midterm and a final. He will let you retake some if you do REALLY bad, by writing a paper or something. All the projects and papers are due on the last day of class. All in all, it was a very enjoyable class!

AWSOME! Dr. Hickman rocks. You have four exams: three online, three essays take home, and a final that is open book in class. One project is due at the end of the semester. If you do poorly he will let you make it up. If you can't turn in an essay on the due date, he will let you turn it in late. He knows it all. He knows what he is talking about.

Awesome Professor! I can honestly say that I wish the class was longer than only 2 1/2 hours per week. 3 online tests. One 3 page paper concerning a movie of your choice. This guy knows his stuff. He always makes funny quips and tells you all sorts of cool details in the movies. He rarely shows you actual music notes, but when he does, there's no need to fear: he'll get right on the piano and play it for you. If I had any complaint, it would be that maybe his lectures stick to the book almost verbatim sometimes.

I would definitely recommend this professor he is funny and very good at what he does. He enjoys what he teaches which really helps in you enjoying the class. His test are online (which means open book) and no time limits. The paper assignment is only as complicated as you let it be. Overall i would definitely recommend him.

YOU NEED THE BOOK for the finals, M/C part is easy but time consum. he said at the end if weren't high enough for a good grade we could do ExtraCr.essays are basically putting the text reading into your own words and elaborat on it. ur just lazy if you dont get at least a B if not A.

Hickman is extremely hilarious!! Especially when you understand the musical jokes he cracks. Sometimes a little inappropriate, but that makes it even funnier. Gets the material across in a interesting manner. Out of all mus history classes, this was my favorite. Take him!

Great class if you need an easy capstone. Didn't show up to class much and got an A. Midterm and Final answers are provided in the textbook. Two written projects about 2-5 pages long discussing the application of music in any movie you like. Class is entertaining, if you're a cinema buff and he's really knowledgeable. Great teacher!

Really kind teacher. He is a totally sweet person, really loves what he does. He knows his stuff, but doesnt make your life complicated. You dont have to go to class, but GO because it is interesting, he is entertaining and funny. If youre interested in film/music, youll love this class. Exams take FOREVER but all the answers are in the book.

3 untimed open book MC online tests (2 w/ essay portion) & 2 easy papers on any film you choose (3+ pages). Attendance optional but went to every one bcuz of the awesome movie clips. Understands we have lives so can be flexible w/ due dates . Passionate teacher w/ a funny personality and knows his stuff so you'll learn something! Take him.

Professor Hickman is one of the nicest guys ever. He is very approachable and helpful. This is a great class to take if you love film or just need to take a capstone. Attendance is optional, but coming to class is great. He shows nice clips of classic films. I recommend getting the book, the 3 exams will be a lot easier I promise. Only 2 assignments, essays discussing the soundtrack of a film of your choice. Overall enjoyable class!

He makes the class interesting! Taking a class with him is totally worth it! Also, one time I got the time of my final wrong, but he was really nice about it and let me take it late. He's the best history teacher at BCCM in my opinion!

First day of class is packed, but Hickman leaves the class open. Hardly ever showed up to class, maybe only 3 times all semester (no mandatory attendance). However, the class was interesting when I did attend, but I chose to save gas money instead. 2 exams with essays, 2 project papers, and a final exam. You need the book for the tests. Easy A.

Roger Hickman's music 468 class is great option to take if you need a capstone. You can tell that he really cares about his students, and is very lenient with deadlines. His classes are optional, but I went to many of them because he is a great lecturer and it is cool to be exposed to movies that I probably would have never considered watching.

Pretty much the same as the person under me. Classes optional, but I suggest getting the book as most of the tests and essay questions are based off of what he says which are word for word what the book says (written by him lol). I loved that he's passionate about film & music which made the class great and worth attending. I would take him again!

I wouldn't say this class is an easy A. From from it if you are not an actually music/film major. The tests are straight out of the book, but each test encompasses about 70 pages from the book, and are in no particular order. Everything is due at the end of the semester which is cool, but it is a lot of work. The professor is super entertaining

Class is easy A. Tests are online with no time limit (buy the book) along with assignments. You could in theory do all of the assignments on the last day of the semester and never go to class and still get an A, but Hickman is so nice and personable that I would go for the fun of it.

Best class and professor ever. Although attendance is not mandatory, the steps to an A are simple: Read the book, complete your tests and papers on time. Make sure you have the book because all his answers on the online tests are directly given from it. He also gives you all semester to write your papers so that's a plus. Easiest capstone.

This was the best class ever. Attendance isn't mandatory, but I showed up anyway because lectures were really cool. Spent class time watching movie clips! make sure to buy the book, because online exams are entirely based off of textbook material. Assignments include three exams (pretty easy), several essays, and two movie projects (also easy).

Best professor ever hands down. He is an easy grader and you dont even need to go this class, which he told us in the beginning of the semester. A very chill guy and will do anything to help you get an A. Paper and midterm and finals are online and is very easily graded. Everything is due on the finals so you have plenty of time to procrastinate.

I never showed up after the first day of class and I got an A. Deadlines are flexible meaning he doesn't mark you late if you turn things in that are past due until the last day of finals. This is a class to take if you are graduating and need a capstone but want to cut yourself some slack your last semester in college.

Honesty, this was an easy Capstone class for the simple fact that we worked collectively as a class. The prof. was cool, and he assured everyone the first day of class that attendance is NOT Mandatory. However, random attendance will be called for extra credit. Take him for a Capstone class. Best decision I've made. Easy assignments and fun.

Take this class! I was supposed to have classes Mon-Thurs but ended up only having class Mon & Wed bc you literally DO NOT need to go to this class & this is coming from a very good student with a high GPA! Attendance is not mandatory and all quizzes and exams are online and due LITERALLY WHENEVER you want to turn them in. This class is so chill.

Much has already been said about what to expect from Hickmans MUS 468 class, but I want to add that the subject matter is incredibly interesting. If you are interested in film even just a little, youll find the topic fun. Every one of his lectures was enjoyable, even if few attend. This was by far my favorite class I ever took at CSULB.

This class is a must!!! I took it as an elective and enjoyed every bit of the class. He is super passionate and tries his best to make you Acknowledge and appreciate music and film in different ways. He is also really understanding.

You don't need to show up to class, not even the first day. Exams can be found through quizlet. However, he has a grad student that grades some of the papers and the grad students acts like she needs to proove that she is knowledgable in music. So, papers are graded a little bit harsher than the past but still not too tough.

3 midterms, 2 with essays, 1 paper. Don't go to class unless you actually care about film music, use the book/google for the midterms, and the paper is completely BS-able. I did all the work for this class in the last 3 days and got an A. Would recommend!

I'm sad that Dr. Hickman is retiring soon because I was looking forward to taking his other classes in the future. He's very easygoing and passionate about the subject, and it made learning the material so much more fun. For distance learning, he made all due dates pushed until the last day of class, which made things nicer for us.

Roger is an amazing instructor! He's clearly very caring of his students and you can tell his passion for his field. His class was truly the highlight of my semester; attendance isn't mandatory but I loved going to his class. He makes assignments due at the very end but don't let that make you lose track of time! Multiple retakes on hw allowed

Hickman is the man! He is so funny and made class such a pleasure to attend. I was really bummed when class transferred to online due to covid and we missed out on all the great films and lectures. But I'm so thankful I took this course, it changes your whole perspective on films and deepens your appreciation of them too.

This class is super easy & chill. Attendance is optional but it's really fun and useful for your tests/papers. Everything is posted on BeachBoard & due the last day of class. 1 multiple choice quiz, 2 MC tests, 2 essays, & 1 movie paper. Everything is open book & encourages us to work together. Unlimited time for quiz/tests. You'll really enjoy it!

I highly recommend taking MUS468 with Professor Hickman if you want an easy A! His lectures & videos are very interesting. Theres a quiz, discussion board, & an essay due every week & a final project (it seems like a lot but its very easy!)

This was an easy A class. I didn't watch a single lecture video and still got an A. What I liked about this class is that he allows you to stop doing the tests, discussions, and papers when you feel satisfied with your grade. I skipped out on doing 3 of the papers by getting an A on every exam and completing all the discussions.

Professor Hickman is a gem! Absolutely enjoyed his online course on Film and Music. This class is known for being an easy way to get some GE credits, so if you have the opportunity to take it and you're not interested in any other options, I'd recommend taking it as long as you don't forget to do the assignments on the side.
