Very helpful instructor. The class is not easy, but he helps you as much as you need it.
This teacher was bogus. I asked him for help and he told me I should have been in his office a month before hand. He plays favorites & the book was hella expensive. He expects everyone to live & breath chem. Class average on tests was around 50%. BAD BAD
No Comments
he is a big dork and isnt too into helping the students. gets side tracked to easily. and thinks that just because it is a low class..that everyone knows everything about chem. not recommended
He knows all his stuff and will help you if you ask. His tests are hard as hell, but you are given the materials to prepare for them. (If you want a social life, this is a problem) Tough class, but totally doable if you have any ambition. No required homework, just labs and tests. Nice guy, you really can only hurt yourself in this class.FAIR!
His tests are very tricky and the book was useless. He is trying to help, but should realise that if the class average is way too low on almost all of the tests - he should make some changes in his teaching style. Sorry House!!
Gives lots of extra help which some of us needed. Tests very hard for the best of us/challenges students. Should teach the chem class before this/get involved in what's taught so we have a better base to start from. Book = poor. Would've helped if he told us where we were going before we got there in lectures/formulas. It would make it easier!
Nice guy willing to help you. Tests make you think. Sometimes this is a pain in the ***. I would take this instructor again and recommend him to my friends
Hard test picky lab grading but good recovery plan on final.
He did his best to teach us & applied it to real life, made me appreciate chem & chmists, only thank God I'm not one of them! He's a great teacher & always willing to help, he really cares. Yes, his tests are really tough & I worked super hard but isn't that the point of the class? Expect to work hard & expect to learn something. Thanks Roger! :)
worst teacher ever! Too lazy to teach his class and expects you to know everything!DO NOT recommend.
possibly the worst teacher ever. doesnt bend his back for anyone. never put handouts on blackboard on time. never really cared to. admitted to being lazy everyday and thought it was funny. he wasnt on time to class ONCE..not once. Tests are impossible. If you think being a lazy teacher is hilarious then take him cause he thinks its hilarious
worst teacher in the world! does not care about his students...he would leave the lab and expected us to know how to do everything! i would never recommend him to everyone.
House is a great professor, he delivers lectures effectively, and provides optional homework and handouts. Our class scored above average for a nationally standardized final. He cares about your learning, and answered any questions you had and gave extra office hours by apt. The subject is challenging, but he helps a lot and kept the class fun.
Prof. House is really good. He has an entertaining personality and will keep you engaged in his lectures. The class is challenging and the lab work contributes to your understanding of the subject.
Mr. House he make chemistry so fun I need to take it more often.
When you sign up for this class, remember this is one of the harder classes in all of undergrad work. Having said that, Prof. House does a nice job simplifying the concepts and making it managable. He's also very prompt with his emails and is very patient. Organic and House goes together like peanut butter and jelly.
In all my years of going to school this was the worst proffessor ever!!
Don't listen to any negative comments by students who probably barely studied and did crappy. Don't forget this is one of the hardest class in undergrad. Prof. House explains each concept clearly...it's up to the students to STUDY! A lot of memorization and understanding of the basics is critical for success in this class....look in the mirror.
Don't pay attention to all the negativity down there-the class is as hard as you make it.If you follow instructions and listen to him when he asks you to WORK PROBLEMS,you'll do just fine.He tries to TEACH you instead of just letting you get an easy A.One of the hardest classes in my undergrad,& one of my favourite!Prof. House rocks!:)
He's AWESOME!SO incredibly patient and helpful! He makes a kickass subject like Organic Chemistry really fun.
He is very nice and helpful. You will work a lot, but you will learn a lot and can earn a good grade if you work hard. Take him if you need organic chemistry.
This teacher lives chemistry! I do understand that this is organic chemistry and you have to study a lot, but when you try to ask him a question, he basically makes you feel like a dumbass for not knowing it in the first place. There is A LOT of work involved, and he is not the best teacher for it.
This professor is the way to go! He is passionate about teaching and it shows! Obviously you have to attend class and study if you want to do well, but you will definately be rewarded if you care about the class! He is entertaining, well studied, and a wonderful professor. I only hope that more professors like him will start teaching! Thanks!
Professor House is awesome! The class is tough no matter where you take it so make sure you do the work! House was always helpful and knew his stuff. Very passionate and very clear in his teaching.
Great teacher but a very difficult class you need to put in ALOT of effort. This class is nothing compared to any other classes so if you dont need to take it dont. He is an amazing teacher and explains very well. I miss his class. High recommendation great teacher. Does alot of class participation.
im not a slacker by all means, his class is so hard. i spent almost everyday studing and still failed his tests. he says he makkes the tests so ard that more then 50% fail. do not take him
Can be vague during lecture and explains things better if you seek out one-on-one time. Labs aren't hard and help raise your grade. Has a good make-up point policy at the end with the final. He isn't a jerk and wants you to do well, but you will have to work hard no matter what! I would recommend him.
Hes an awesome teacher. Great guy and knows the subject really well. It's a tough class and isn't going to hold your hand to help you pass. You get the grade you deserve with him. Put in the time and you will do well. Highly recommend him. Hes one of my favorite teachers of all time
HOUSE RULES!!Class was fun and he made learning easy. He really knows his stuff and you will learn a great deal if you like chemistry. Chemistry is my major and this class has only made me love chem even more. Study, study study and you will do great! I got an A!!! Thanks House :)
Def. 1 of the worst prof's I've ever had! Plays favorites, is VERY biased. Defines the epitome of UNprofessionalism. Once asked him to give feedback on an assignment. Instead of looking over it in his free time in lab, he stood there chatting w/ some guy for 30-45 min. Tries n flirts w/ female students, sits w/ feet on table. Very unapproachable.
Not a bad teacher at all. He give out alot of practice problems this semester, and alot of inclass problem. It seems that doing problems from black board help alot this time. Exam 3 focused alot on chapter 8. House is a bit eccentric, but a good teacher. If you don't mind his Mischievous tendency, then take him for org 1!
House is a great professor, and willing to help you when you need it. Make sure you read the assigned chapters and do the every problem set you can. Attend all of the classes and take notes, because the way he explains it will help you on the exams. Make sure you keep up with you lab notebook and, I can't stress this enough, ask if you need help!
House is a fun teacher BUT he absolutely DOES NOT CARE for his students. I have been getting A's in classes since the 1st grade and with 25+ hrs of studying a week I managed a measly C in this class. Oh and he doesn't curve either.... my 79.7% was still a C.
He is a pretty good teacher. He is clear with lectures and explains stuff very well. Very funny and likes to joke around. The class is VERY HARD; it doesn't matter which teacher you have, it is just a difficult subject to begin with. BE WARNED: if you don't like sarcastic humor, you probably won't enjoy the class.
Willing to give as much time as necessary to his students. Extremely humorous unless your the sensitive type. I got an A because I devoted a lot of time to this class and spent hours in his office. Anyone who says he doesn't care for his students did not make an effort.
As long as you can take his jokes (which are hilarious if you ask me) then you should be fine. He teaches very well and everything in class is clear. His tests are very hard. He grades lab notebook fairly. He has a good policy for the final to help boost your grade. Overall, not at all impossible to get an A if you are dedicated
Anyone taking organic chemistry should know that no matter who your teacher is THE MATERIAL WILL BE HARD! House does a good job of explaining the material. It is a weed out class, and a lot of studying is needed, but House's grading makes it easier to pass. If you plan on going on to 205 try to take Stanford for both parts.
Dont get me wrong!!! Class is Hard but House gives you all the tools you need and more. So helpfull and passionate I would fail the class just to take him again because his jokes are so funny!!!!
He is an excellent teacher. Having serious apprehension for organic chemistry, he manages to make a 3 hour lecture interesting. His humor adds to lecture. He really considers the students concerns and will spend the time clarify questions.
Very helpfull, funny, clear. If you gonna take orgo, make sure you take him.
This class is hard, no doubt. I had to study A TON just to pass. House explains the concepts very clearly and will help if you ask. His humor is what got me through the class. Just do well on the labs and do the best you can on the final because you will get "bonus" points. I got Ds on all of my tests and still managed to pass. Good luck!
Very hard tests, but its all about the lab and final (which is easy). Another thing, NO BUSY WORK/HW/QUIZES!!!!!!! its common to see people get 20-30% test scores. If you study, really study, you are fine. only chem class that i havent napped in cause he is too funny.
House is a very good teacher. He really stressed the foundations of organic. He does a fantastic job of developing the students intuition for chemistry. I loved his course. He really cares about his students, provided they show equal interest. I feel as if I'm very prepared for 205 now. His tests are fair, you just gotta study.
O-chem is hard, regardless of the teacher. House is mosdef the professor you want to take. He has a good sense of humor, stays after class (even at 10PM) to spend time with you regarding coursework or personal things, and just flat out knows how to teach o-chem. Recommended!
Prof House is the epitome of Chemistry: Conveyed material remarkably well, prepared me for many standardize exams and most importantly-instilled the passion for chemistry through his charismatic teachings. Orgo chem is very challenging. You must be prepared to work and stay abreast with your studies in order to succeed. Enjoyed the class immensely.
I do not understand why people think he is a great teacher. Maybe if you're a boy, which he shows favoritism to. Anyways, I had a 4.0 before this class, I'm am doing the prerequisites for nursing to transfer to UIC. After this class it became a 3.76! I had almost completed all my prereqs, and I am no dummy. I got my first F on one of his tests!
Thinks of himself as a great teacher, god given gift to education. Covers his luck of knowledge with laconism like "you should know it", sarcasm or cheesy jokes. Awful. Made me wanna go to another college.
House is a fun teacher to be around. The materials given out in class and assigned homework are really close to the exams given and the ACS final.
House is horrific. He does not teach at all. We did not have a proper lecture. He talks about one things and the tests are on absolutely different. God help you for the pains that House is going to cause you.
do not take house he is the worse organic chem teacher he doesnot teach you have to teach yourself
quater of the class dropped house is terrible make yourself a favor dont take him
do not take him he looks down on students
Had him for both semesters of orgo and I can tell you that the negative comments are completely false. This isn't high school. You have to dedicate time and effort to this class and he will give you the basics but you'll only succeed if you study hard by using the book and doing many example problems. He also keeps you entertained with his humor
If you can teach yourself from the textbook you should do well but if you can not do not count on House! He does not care about you!
I had House for 2 semesters. The negative comments are shocking, he is a caring/humourous teacher. Organic chemistry is not a class for the light hearted and certainly not for those who are unprepared to give everything they can to succeed. If you give it your all, you will do fine. HE CARES IF YOU DO! If you want help, you need to ask for it!
When you get to this point in your studies, you really need to step back and look at your career choice. If you are going into pre-med, you will need to take this course. At this point you need to decide whether or not you see yourself doing labs and chem in your future. This class is the break off point and is no way easy. Good Luck.
Any negative reviews were probably made against House were probably because a student did not put the time needed in order to succeed in orgo. This class takes time and lots of practice and House is always there to help. He is also hilarious. 100% recommend him but make sure you are in an adult mindset ready to succeed and work for your A.
Long story short, if you put in the effort you will pass. His class is not at all easy, you definitely have to do your extra reading a self teaching on certain things. My 3 exam grades were C,D,D. Which killed me on the inside being a 4.0 student but you will learn that recovery points GOLD! Do the practice exams and ask him questions! Grade: A
This guy is great. Debating between the 2 full time orgo professors at Harper, House is a easy going sarcastic as-shole, But he CARES. Stanford, more straight forward but strict. YOU NEED THE BOOK. practice problems within the book and Practice exams. go office hours 1 on 1. Labs, not so bad too. my test: C,D,D recovery points and I got a A
If you have a job and Chem is not a first language to you do not take his class
House is a grt prof. You will have to dedicate few hours every week in this course to do exceptionally well. People who work while taking this course have a rough time coping up with it. The book helps a ton. A little reading on weekend over the topics covered will help you in the long run. He is the coolest, very informal and a great mind at chem.
House is a great teacher, organic chemistry is tough in itself but he's there if you need help and takes time to explain each topic. Do homework problems in the book, pay attention in class, and study, otherwise you won't pass.
Professor House is one of the best organic teachers i have ever taken. He always makes the class so much more fun and entertaining. House really cares about his students and how they do in class. Yes his exams are hard like any other organic class. If expect just to wing this class then Organic is not for you.
Aside from the "random" checks before every exam, Dr. House is a great teacher.. His lectures are clear and he provides in-class practice sheets. If you do the problems in the book and the previous exams, you will be ready for the exams. Overall, the class was an interesting experience and I think Dr. House made organic chemistry as easy as possib
This was one of the hardest classes I have taken. If you are not good at chemistry then you will suffer.
One of the worst teachers I've had. He does not give a crap about you, during lab safety he said he would laugh at you if you caught yourself on fire. He is sexist, and would not accommodate a medical handicap, saying "It's disappointing you decided to take this class." Just read the book, his lectures are mediocre. He does not let you record.
Let me start off by saying I do not recommend taking this course over the summer, unless you have A LOT of time to study. This course is not easy and I felt like he made it even harder at times. He makes you work for your grade. No partial credit on quizzes. An online homework system would have helped grasp the material.
Makes lectures interactive and really gets students to practice the material on their own. Exams are tough, but fair to the material we learned. Make fun of him sometimes cuz he'll give you a better grade (jk but just do it)... He's a funny dude I would definitely take his class, HouseStanford
Chemistry was always my favorite class before I met this prof. He will make you feel stupid in front of the class, his tests are hard. Also, he expects you to know everything before the class starts. Don't take him if you don't want to lower your GPA. Our class test average for 55-68/100. No one ever got an A.
I've taken House for both 204 & 205, and he simply one of the best professors I've ever had. Organic Chemistry is NOT an easy class at all, and it needs a lot of practice in order to pass the class." Highly recommended"
His communication style is weirdly passive aggressive, and he could honestly work on presenting more professionally. I didn't feel comfortable going to office hours or asking Q's after class. House was OFTEN absent for extended periods from labs during which we needed assistance. I took Dr. Standford for CHM 205 and had a *much* better experience.
Obviously Organic Chemistry is a tough class regardless of the professor but House explains the material well. He responds well to personality so if no one talks to him then class is gonna suck. Best way to pass: read the book along with his lectures. A week before the test, start going over his old tests and ask him questions in office hours.
House is funny but has made students cry in the past. He is not a approachable guy and if you ask him a question he will respond with "what do you think" and not fully answer your question. He dose not lecture he gives handouts that you do alone or with friends in class. He dose not help in lab he will ask what do you think You are left to yourself
I really liked him as a person. However,as a teacher, I did not. His teaching style is passive-aggressive and he doesn't answer questions. All the reviews on this site were very accurate. He was often absent during lab. I personally didn't feel comfortable asking him questions. He made a few students cry. Don't take during the summer.
Dont take chem with him, he makes his students cry and most time he is absent in lab lectures
Dr. House is the best chemistry professor I've ever had. He makes his lectures very interesting and you can learn a lot from him. I enjoyed his class very much and I highly recommend taking him. Organic chemistry is of course not an easy class so be ready to study and do lots of problems from the textbook.
I love Prof House!! I was scared to take him and was intimidated by him in the beginning but honestly he is one of the best prof's i have had in a longgg time. Just do your work and show that you care about the material and house will respect you and the ethic you have for such a hard class. Lectures are amazing and he make them bearable.
House is a very funny professor. His lectures were always entertaining. Though, he often switched schedule around and often the class felt a little disorganized. No knee had any idea what was going on in the class.
Literally awful he expects you to know whats Hes teaching, very sarcastic, instead of explain he goes around the question you ask him, has 0 structure off grading stuff
Did not enjoy him as a professor at all. He is more likely to be passive aggressive to you rather than answering you question directly during his almost useless lectures for understanding the material. I agree with his stance on being more hands off in lab, but most of the time he is nowhere to be found multiple times during a lab.
Professor House is by far the worst professor I have ever had. It is very uncomfortable asking him questions and he makes you feel stupid if you dont have the knowledge he expects. He often responds har. I once asked for extra credit opportunities and he responded oh no, that would just be extra work for me to do.
He grades super hard and when the class average for the final was an F he refused to curve or give out any extra credit. Most people did not pass this class. DO NOT TAKE
Lectures were amazing! Ask questions! he will respond in great detail & tries to help you understand. The nature of ochem is difficult & dependent on mastering previous chapters. Cant do reactions w/o stereochem, and u cant do stereochem w/o Lewis dot structures.. this class tests you as a student, so do all the problems 2 or 3x til you get it!
A brick wall is more approachable than this professor. His feedback on assignments is little no nothing but insults. I would not recommend this professor. You are better off taking this class with someone else.
His lectures are well-rounded and clearly stated. He pushes his students to think for themselves successfully, in regard to, labs that may require some out-of-the-box thinking. He is a great professor if you are prepared to put in the effort and time required. He isn't unapproachable, just can make you feel dumb at times. Get used to it w/ school!
Don't confuse class difficulty with professor quality. Very knowledgeable & explains organic well. But to actually do well on tests/quizzes, he recommends book practice qs (LOTS, but some are even test qs). It's hard, but he stresses content that are foundational for each other, so put in hours for the long run. He really cares & is willing to help
He was amazing professor, you can through his lectures understand chemistry, also he was pushing us think . Anyone want to study and learn chemistry take his class , if you just want grades looking for another class
House is a really interesting guy. If you participate, he likes you. If you try, like actually really APPLY yourself you will hopefully pass with at least a 70. I did take this as a summer, 8 week course, so there's that to keep in mind as well. No more than 7 of our 18-person class passed, HOWEVER, I feel adequately prepared for Orgo 2.
labs are not worth much, so if you get 3 points off, that's already an 80%. VERY harsh grader
CHEM110.Very long and boring lectures; I learned more from YouTube than from attending his lectures. He also gets mad if the class doesn't answer his questions out loud. He didn't grade our lab reports for 4 weeks, and then when he did, he finally told us how the whole class was doing poorly on them. This, of course, made the first test scores low.
Good professor! Not the easiest to approach but really makes you think about your questions and come to the answer yourself. Understanding for things that come up and will work with you to accommodate them. I never went to lecture and passed with a B, but do all the practice problems and read book. Tests are hard.
Do not take. The class retention rate is ~20% and the highest class grade was a 75%. When asked for a review guide for the final, he promptly told us that it would be "too much work for him" to make a guide that only a few people would use. He asks questions in class and if you don't answer he'll make you feel stupid for not knowing. DO NOT TAKE.
As a practicing physician, I am appalled to see this unprofessional continue to teach at Harper College. His lectures did not correlate to his tests in difficulty level, and he took joy in placing tissue boxes on all the desks prior to his exams. He laughed when a student went to their car to throw up. I re-took this course at COD and got an A.
This class is supposed to prepare you for Gen Chem, but he makes it too hard at times with difficult examples from his Org class. Tests are SUPER hard, class average was 60% or less. 70% of people dropped after the second exam. Not approachable at all, makes you feel stupid when trying to ask something, also kinda passive aggresive. Just don't
Does not believe in study guides because then "he would be doing the work" as if that wasnt his literal job. Completed an entire unit 2 days before spring break but decides to test us after spring break completely out of spite as there was no study guide to compare to the test. Told us all to just look at the questions in the textbook.
He was an interesting dude, he wanted the class to participate, and when people wouldn't he threw some passive-aggressive comments, but I thought they were kinda funny making the class a little more enjoyable. Overall, it seems like it would be a tough class with his teaching style and it is, but passing his class was satisfying.
The people who are scared to approach him b/c of his sarcasm or "passive-aggressiveness" need to grow a pair. He will tell you what you need to hear (sometimes the truth hurts). His lectures are enthusiastic and full of emotion which are great but require student engagement. His tests are the harder than other orgo profs but he is more reasonable.
By all means he is a great lecturer that thoroughly explains the concepts well, and he has lots of potential to be an amazing professor, but his attitude and his ego kind of holds him back from that. His three exams are very difficult, but I guess on the bright side it helps a lot when preparing for the ACS final exam.
Lectures are long; labs have little instruction. Takes a hands-off approach to his class. Also tends to make assumptions during lab and constantly calls out students for little things. Not very friendly either and has an attitude most days. Also grade depends on very little work you do and labs are hard to follow.
Great professor, but you must do book problems. He will stay after class and always help you. Always has office hours to help students. When I took this class I thought it was really hard, but after I was extremely prepared for organic 2. I would definitely take a class with him again if I had the chance.
nice that he drops lowest exam grade/replaces it with ACS final grade.great lectures he explains well, but when it comes to the exams,it seems like he forgets we are learning this for first time because he's studied it for years.try your best.if you don't pass, that's okay, you can always retake.I suggest you take It somewhere else for a better grade
Professor House's lectures are enthusiastic, but require active student engagement. His tests are challenging, but he is reasonable. Unstuck ai was a helpful study tool alongside the textbook. Overall, the class is tough but worthwhile if you're willing to put in the effort.
Just don't
I think he thinks that orgo is something all professions will use. Graduating pharmacy school this year, and as a chem heavy field...didnt use it once.
taught and explained like a teacher should. exams were intimidating though. Retook Orgo I at Oakton and got an A...if that tells you anything.
Had to drop, wish he wasnt so intimidating
Take Wade instead, this man is a joke. He does not give any points whatsoever, you can only get the correct answer or the complete wrong answer, there is no in-between.
I took this course with the hopes that I would be able to ease my way back into chemistry since I had not taken a chemistry course since high school, but Professor House made it way too difficult. He was very rude when you would come up to him with questions and did not take the time to explain the materials. He also is a late grader.
Curve is the only thing that will probably save my grade. Take Wade if given the chance.
take orgo at another school and you will do much better trust
His lectures were always messy and all over the place, he would just scribble all over his worksheet. He's very passive aggressive for no reason, and would make you feel uncomfortable when you ask him for help whether it was for lab or lecture. Please take any other professor but him.
please do not take House, I took his Orgo 1 course and he literally asked me if I passes chem 1 and 2. Of course I did, how else would I have gotten here? His ego is exactly like high school boys who have nothing going for them. Just take Wade instead of this boy.
He is very passive aggressive. makes you feel scared to ask questions.
He's good at teaching but I feel like he can overteach sometimes.
pretty late grader. He harps on "make sure you defend your point" in the labs but then sends an email saying we write too much...
Just don't.
The worst professor you can choose for chemistry or any other course. He thinks he is better than everyone else and is always talking badly about other teachers. He doesn't like questions and makes you feel very uncomfortable, constantly doubting your skills and knowledge. He doesn't even deserve to be a professor with that attitude.
