He is a very arrogant teacher. He does not seem to be very helpful towards the students. When students ask questions it almost seems like a bother to him. Not clear on what he wants on the test. However, take it if you want an pretty easy B/C.
This class is awesome! He brings excitement to this typically dry class. The class consists mostly of viewing slides, but he relates to them by saying like hey when i taught there this summer the class got really **** there, there and there!! He makes you really enjoy and appreciate art history
It gets boring a lot of the times and he tries to be funny... I guess it's an okay class, but I do not look forward to going to it. I skip a lot and just get notes from a friend. You never reall miss much!
haha funny teacher! i love him!
The man is a f'n sticth! How do you not enjoy this class? i think that is impossible to do! The dude is a great teacher!
Very funny ma. The class is just boring if your not interested in art
This class is really fun. I look forward to go to it. The teacher is awesome and pretty funny. He shows slides, but makes it fun. He got me really interested in the subject. Just watch out for his tests. He says that if you go to class you will pass, but thats not necessarily true. Just STUDY a lot! His study sessions arent that helpful.
H'e a nice guy. he like to joke around. all you do is look at slides and it puts you to sleep. but it is an easy class to pass if you take it P/F
Knowledgable teacher. Makes art interseting. I actually did independent research because of his class. His test are tough. Looking at the notes is not enough. You must go to class everyday, so take it twice a week.
Good teacher, but his tests are a little hard. He is also very strict about leaving class early or showing up late.
very cool guy. Jokes around a lot in class. Knows all about art. Do not show up late. Asks some picky questions on exam so take good notes.
okay i did not know old men go through PMS. He's one of the moodiest professor i've had. I'll give him props for trying to be funny. Not a hard class at all. I am a straight A student and I received a B in his class this semester...he's not sure what he wants on the exam, he words them all weird. If you can then take this class with someone else
Very interesting lectures. He keeps you interested and makes the art memorable to those who wouldnt not otherwise care. You need to study for his tests unless you retain knowledge you hear really well. He gives you a good guideline for note taking.
cool professor. he told you everything you need to know for his test. If you show up you pass. He tells you this and he wasn't wrong.
Very interesting lectures. I didnt really care about art untill this class. He keeps your attention. His tests are pretty easy as long as you go to class all the time and take good notes. I would definetly suggest taking his class.
easy as long as you go to class and take notes .. you dont need the text book .. his tests will take you 20 min. to finish max. dont piss him off, other than that he's a very good teacher!!! =]
Hurlburt knows his stuff, but it seems like he prefers joking about the works rather than teaching you about them. Doesn't like to answer questions. Some works he even gave incorrect titles for. His exams are TRICKY - you must read the questions carefully. Not recommended, but unfortunately, if you need this class, you probably have no other option
I've had Hurlburt for Medieval & Renaissance; he is great if you are a non-Art History major b/c the material is over simplified & he tells jokes. I feel that I'm behind for grad school; had I known, I would have taken Elin Hopkins for Renaissance. He plays tricks w/ the wording on his tests-read carefully. Book is good for images-no real reading.
I had him for art appreciation... don't buy the textbook, you won't use it, and he "checks" for it but just says he "remembers" who showed him. 3 tests, all on lecture material, he will tell you EXACTLY what's on the test in the review. Easy class as long as you go and take notes, interesting lectures, funny guy. I would definitely recommend!
If you are serious about pursuing Art History as a major you will be doing yourself a disservice if you have a class with Hurlburt. He does not take the subject seriously and uses the time to showcase his "extensive" knowledge of the Renaissance. It is a shame that a professor so lacking in content is being paid to teach.
he is really easy. his class is basically just go to class and take notes. he will never use blackboard or email or anything like that, he tells u the date of the tests and reviews in class. the tests are really easy, max. 20 mins to finish. dont come in more than 10 mins. late and dont be on your cell phone. don't sleep either!
The tests are easy if you come to class regularly and take good notes. Nothing out of the ordinary. Just dont come in late, dont use the back door, dont sleep, or text or he will go bipolar on you.. and then pretend it never happened. other than that, hes not that bad!
His attempt at being funny definately keeps the subject interesting.I attended every class and studied the lecture notes long and hard,he managed to throw questions onto the exam that he never went over or even talked about. He crams a lot of information into each section and then tells you that the exam is broad which makes it hard to study for.
He is engaging with plenty of relevant antidotes. In his lectures he should a passion for the Rennaissance and the city of Florence which he has visited many times. His jokes are hit and miss but he keeps the energy level high. His test require preparation but they are fair.

ART APPRECIATION This professor was amazing. He gives tests on exactly the material he tell you to study. He makes his classes fun and exciting and always interesting. He is great. However this is not a fluff class, you do have to work for a grade. But if you can do that, you are in the clear.
Very easy class. Grade consists of 3 exams & that's it. Go to every class && take good notes. Prof. Hurlburt is funny and really cool but don't piss him off. He tries to scare you into buying the book by saying that your grade depends on it but he never once checked for the book so don't buy it!
He's so rude to his students. If your thinking about coming in late be prepared to be chewed out in from the whole class (about 200 people). He makes fun of the art work, and spends most of the time bragging about his trips to Italy. Tells you not to study about details and dates for the the test then you go to take the test, all dates and details.
He is extremely rude! He makes fun of students in his class. He speechs are boring, and he tends to go off subject. He gives us false information about the test. Also when it comes to the final exam, he only gives you an hour to take it ( you are suppose to get 3). I would not recommend this professor at all!
This guy has a stick up his ass.He will pick on any student he can,try his best to embarrass them.Don't dare question your grade, gets butthurt and goes off saying he never makes mistakes. However his lectures are really interesting and the tests aren't impossible to pass.Take good notes and you should be set for at least a B. and DO NOT buy the book
Hes pretty funny and he keeps the topic interesting. Hes really moody though so dont come in late, have your phone out or look like youre falling asleep. He'll either kick you out or yell at you in front of everyone. Overall, class wasnt too hard. If you want a good grade, go to class & take notes. DONT BUY THE BOOK if u plan on going to lecture!
Ignore what everyone is saying about him being mean etc etc. If you go to his lectures you will absorb the information and be very entertained. He is incredibly intelligent and makes the subject interesting. All he asks for is your respect and that you refrain from using cellphones. Loved his class!
He was really funny and really interesting. If you attend every class and focus, getting an A is the easiest thing in the world. I barely studied and just filled in the vocab words he makes you write. I'm a sophomore and this is still the easiest A I got by far. And DO NOT BUY THE BOOK. Even if he says hes checking, hes not. Don't waste your money
PROS: He's clear, has a sincere interest in art, and is kind of entertaining. CONS: His tests are silly and pretty hard. They cover the tiny details that you won't even think to study. I put in a good 3 hours of studying for each test and still ended up with a C+. He claims you need to get the book but never checks for it.
great professor. dedicated and passionate about what he does. He is very fair. Here's the catch, you have to show up to class and take notes. He will help you if you help you self.
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<3333333333333333 LOVE HIIIIIMMM
A very knowledgeable professor but he gets off subject and wastes a lot of time. His jokes get annoying. He needs to share more of his expertise and also he needs to provide a study guide for the tests.
You don't need the book. he hates rude people. Assitance is not mandatory but you NEED the notes, so if you dont go you wont get notes and you really need them for the tests which are 2 about all material covered and study hard!Only one paper to write. Class tend to be boring however he makes some jokes and makes it a bit more interesting.
Hurlburt is a great professor with a lot of knowledge. If you are eager and determined to learn and have fun doing it, take his class. If you are lazy, don't like going to class and you don't have a sense of humor then he's not for you..you'll just end up leaving a bad review here. Take detailed notes (geography, small facts, etc...)
I've taken him every semester I possibly could. Classes are straightforward. Pay attention, take notes = win. He could make the phone book interesting, imo.
honestly the best professor Ive ever taken in my life. Hes funny and makes everything interesting. As long as you pay attention to what he tells you to remember in class then you'll get an easy a. He gives you the answers if you come to class. Class went by fast and was really interesting.
Professor Hurlburt was a blast. He was really funny and kept such a boring class alive. It is key that you go to class all the time and write down everything he puts on the board, because everything he puts on the test is based on the words on the board.
Great Professor. Easy A just go to class pay attention and take good notes. DO NOT BUY THE BOOK!!!!
The class is interesting & yes Hurlburt is a very entertaining person. However, if you are looking for an easy A, do not take this course, even though it is an elective. Also, plan on never having to use the restroom, as he will embarrass you like no other and continue to do so for a few minutes. Wish I would have taken something else. Need book $$
If you're looking for an easy elective or to complete credits for foundations of creative expression, do not take this course with him. He simply lectures and can make exams difficult at times even though he says it's "going to be easy". He doesn't take attendance, but you have to go to class to pass.
Rude, annoying & unprofessional professor. Brags about how cool his other classes are but I'd rather be trampled by horses than take 1 of his classes again. Doesn't give students feedback on their tests because he "shreds" all scantrons afterwords. Only takes 3 grades. Biggest joke of an elective class. Take something else.
Only 3 tests make up your whole grade. Not easy! Definitely do not recommend!
Terrible professor. Does not take attendance but you have to take notes on EVERYTHING he puts on the board. Didn't say the final was cumulative when it was, no homework or quizzes, your whole grade is based off of exams full of trick questions. DO NOT TAKE. DO NOT BUY THE BOOK. You won't pass.
Not an easy class! Extremely difficult to get an A because only 3 exams make up your grade. I do not recommend taking this class!!
Hurlburt is an eccentric, funny and entertaining man. He's lived a lot and seen a lot, so his stories are very interesting. The class is set up in a way that you MUST be able to take notes well. If you attend class and pay attention, it really is just simple memorization. He does not tolerate tardiness or rude behavior.
Prof. Hurlburt is the absolute BEST. Anyone posting that he is not was obviously one of the rude ones that he appropiately would not stand for. Go to class and take notes and it's simple. He does not like rude people (who does), so just be polite and kind and this class will be the best. He's funny, witty, and the best guy ever!!!!
Not easy to get an A. Don't recommend
Prof Hurlburt is an awesome dude that can make the subject somewhat interesting to those who had none beforehand. That being said, this class can be pretty hard if you aren't a good notetaker. The material he goes over in class isn't written, he gives it all orally. If you miss something important that he says you're kind of screwed.
Prof. Hurlburt was by far my FAVORITE professor! To all those who claim his class was so hard and impossible to pass were the ones who either did not show up or slept throufh lecture. All you need to do is show up and take a few notes on what he says is important. I definitely recommend this class if you know how to sit in a chair and listen!
horrible teacher expects you to go to every class all he does is talk adn you have to take notes from that and his class is based on the words he gives in the first 5 minutes of class and OMG if you are late he flips do not take this horrible professor
DONT TAKE! thought this class was going to be easy or one of my laid back classes turns out to be the hardest class I have! only 3 tests impossible to get an A. strict and mean! No blackboard use so you cant check your grade! so mad I might ruin my bright futures over this pointless class!!! UGHHHHHHHHHHHH
Excellent class! You will learn alot, even if your not an Art major you WILL enjoy this class!2 papers and 1 final! It nearly impossible to fail his class, plus he makes it fun and interesting...very knowledgeable professor, take his class! you will not regret.
Never uses book. Gives you a list of terms. Covers the terms randomly in his lectures over the next couple weeks. Then another list, etc. Biggest problem is you don't know what to study. He doesn't cover the terms in any fixed way. By test-time you have a half empty list and the other half are random scrawls of bits of information.
Not an easy class to pass if you skip class. You have to take detailed notes, but hes pretty clear about whats going to be on the exam. If you just glance over your notes for 45 minutes the day before the test, you'll do fine. Easy A if you're not too lazy to go to class.
He has a great sense of humor and is faily easy going. His lectures are great because he makes them funny and relatable. There's only 3 exams and if you go to class he gives you a lot of answers for questions on the exam. He has no tolerance for phones or electronics
This was the only class that I honestly enjoyed going to this semester! He is very layed back but has a strict rule of no electronics in class. He tells great stories and jokes and I would definitely take this class again!
By far my favorite professor. He made the material interesting and always had a good story. Make sure you take notes and try not to skip class. I would take the class again in a heartbeat.
1. He is old school (no ppt posted, no laptop/cell phone use during class) and the reason people think he is hard or not clear is because of this. 2. He literally tells you whats on the test word for word.. NOT KIDDING.. all you gotta do is pay attention and write good notes to get an A with minimal effort 3. Funny as hell, will call students out
Avoid at all costs! He's passionate about the subject. However, he can be very moody, rude, and too sarcastic to students. Sometimes it's hard to understand what he's saying when he's teaching & can be confusing. Only 3 exams make up your grade. Therefore, make sure you come & take DETAILED notes b/c he gives his notes orally. DON'T buy the book!
I would not recommend this professor, he does not use technology so if you miss a class there is no way to get the notes unless you know someone in the class. In his lectures he speaks and you have to write everything he says. There are only three tests the whole semester thats including the exam, there are no homework or extra credit.
This professor was by far my favorite. He's very old school so his lectures cover what's going to be on the 3 exams he gives (including the final). Doesn't like cellphone usage so keep it away or you'll get kicked out. Just show up to class and right down what he tells you to and you'll pass. He's also hilarious so you'll have fun.
Professor Hurlburt was amazing! He doesn't tolerate phone use in class because he wants you to respect his lectures. He is very funny and makes learning art history quite enjoyable. You have to come to class if you want to succeed. The exams are solely based on his lectures so if you show up you'll pass with flying colors.
Hurlburt is a really nice professor and makes lectures interesting. GO TO CLASS!!!! He gives exam questions every class and answers them. His exams are easy if you go to class. Does not use blackboard or online text book. don't worry about that. Basically go to class bc if you don't, you won't know what is going on or your grade in the class.
He is awesome and funny, enjoy his class he makes it very interesting. Have to come to every class or you will be lost and he talks about what you need to know for exams. Exams are easy only if you show up and listen in his classes. He is entertaining and I would take his class again!
Fine class. Only tests for grades. Just show up and listen and you'll pass easily.
The entire class is lecture based and your final grade is composed of 2 test and your finals.
He is a really nice teacher, super funny. This class is super easy, there are about two or three test, I think he drops tone test if you do bad one. Doesn't like technology so don't get caught with your phone in class, he will put you on blast. But overall he's super funny and his test are really easy, just make sure to take notes and study them.
The professor himself is okay. Tells a lot of mediocre jokes. Tries to make class enjoyable but it is honestly so hard due to the fact that he lectures with the lights completely off. Like the subject is already boring but now you're asking me to fall asleep.
Doesn't upload grades or use canvas at all. Only 3 tests throughout the semester and the last one is cumulative. Gives all the information for the tests from his powerpoints, so don't worry about the textbook. He is very funny and told stories about himself which made the class better for me. Easy class if you just show up and take notes!
awful teacher, only 3 test for his class. no homework or extra credit to help your grade. he also does not teach, the test consists of things that are not even taught in class. very unfair, thinks hes funny when hes not. do not take this class!!!!!!
You have to go to lecture. He doesn't take attendance. He gives questions that are going to be on the text. No quizzes, Just 4 tests. He is funny. DON'T NEED TO BUY THE TEXTBOOK. He lecture on his own things not by the textbook.
Hes an awesome professor! You dont need the textbook even though he will tell you to buy the access code, dont. Although attendance isnt mandatory, what he says IN CLASS is on the test. His lectures are funny, he tells lots of stories and hes such a smart guy he makes it interesting and explains art in a way thats easy to understand!
This class is graded off three of four exams, you don't need the access code/textbook. He doesn't use canvas or post notes so your only means of getting information is going to class. He is a nice guy and funny, and wants students to pass. He is strict about cell phone use though!
Final grade is only made up of 3 exam grades, but theyre easy as long as you attend class and take notes. DONT buy the online textbook, I never used it once and got an A in the class because exams are based off his lectures. Hes cool and funny and makes lectures interesting, but hes extremely strict about staying off your phone and not being late.
You don't need the textbook at all. Be sure to pay attention to everything he says during lecture and take good notes because that's what the tests consist of. There are only a total of 3 test for the entire course. He is a chill guy but don't speak over him and don't use your phone during class.
He is an excellent professor, albeit he does sometimes go off topic for extended periods of time. But when he teaches, he makes it interesting. I enjoy his lectures and his writing assignments. He challenges you to think outside of the box instead of writing the same old drab stuff. And don't hesitate to reach out to him. He is a nice guy!
hes a really funny guy, very respectful and expects you to be too. he doesn't tolerate lateness, so you got to be on time. you don't, DONT need the online textbook, as long as you actually go to class and take good notes, the class is an easy a. only grades are 3 exams and final, no hw. easy easy easy a.
Actually my favorite professor I've ever had! Very funny and very respectable! Super easy and interesting class, all you have to do is show up to class and be on time, "that's half of life, just showing up"-Hurlburt. Very easy A if you attend class and pay attention. No attendance is taken, but is important to pass the class. Only grades are 3 exam
Great professor, great topics, easy assignments & quizzes do not count against your grade. The only thing that will really affect your grade is attendance.
While I did enjoy him, I can't guarantee others will. He does not follow a textbook and does not update Canvas (purposefully). You must attend every lecture to gain information. His class will teach you a lesson in accountability. His lectures are almost entirely oral with the accompaniment of picture slides. He is pretty chill though.
