Professor Karapin is a good professor. He assigns a lot of readings but they are interesting. Be careful his classes are very writing intensive, but its worth it if your interested in the subject.
AWKWARD, MONOTONOUS & UNCOMFORTABLE AT TIMES. HE ASSIGNS A SHORT PAPER EACH WEEK BUT DOESN'T WANT THE STUDENT TO REPORT ANY INSIGHT OR OPINION.BEING THAT ITS A POLITICAL SCIENCE CLASS YOU WOULD THINK SO.GROUP ASSIGNMENTS ARE A WASTE OF TIME. BECOMES MORE ABOUT HANDING SOMETHING IN THAN LEARNING.
weird guy, smart. very organized but petty and annoying for lateness to class and attendance (if you are 10 minutes late he marks you 3/4 present). annoying weekly writing assignments and retarded group work. if you are someone who cant always make it to class dont take him. 2 main 5pg papers
Prof Karapin is so smart and he is able to convey and give his knowledge to the class. Yes, there is a lot of writing and reading but it is a writing intensive class! Grades very fair- if you do the work, you will know what you will get at the end of the semester. Def would recommend him!!
AH! Prof. Karapin. What a strange guy. His requirements are very straightforward and fairly graded- although I think he skims the short papers and just looks for decent citations. His lectures are quite boring and he reads off his sheet. He knows his stuff- but beware of raising your hand in the middle of a long winded passage! Overall- Decent.
Professor Karapin was overall okay. He grades fairly but dont talk in the class cause he will flip and becareful when raising hand for comments...he might shut u down for no reason..crazy amounts of writing in the class and you have to work for your grade so be prepared to do the damn thing!!!
This professor knows his stuff!! This class was not joking when it said writing intensive. Every week a paper or two was due. DO NOT INTERRUPT HIM WHEN HE IS SPEAKING!! DONT BE LATE!!! He was very odd. No room for opinion everything is straight out of the text. Hinestly I didnt learn much. I got a B- so I was doing the work.
Not exactly my favorite professor. I tend to think that he ignores the poilitical content of the written assignments and only checks to see if you've plagiarized. It's a writing intensive class and there's a lot of reading to do, so be prepared to work!
DROP IT. UPTIGHT. Really rediculous and degrading group work assignments. Course content is very interesting, but he sucks all the excitement out of it with his transparencies and blah lecture style.
Is very clear and straight forward about class requirements... if you can listen and write at 200 level classes, getting an A won't be all that difficult.
Before I took this class, I was not interested in it at all. In fact, I was upset for days when I found out I had to take this class. But Karapin made this class extremely interesting and understandable. If you do all the assignments, read the books, and participate in class, you will definately get the grade you deserve. Take him. He is fair.
Wierd man. Takes ages to get the class started.Gives tons of homework.dry, monotonous, put me to sleep a couple of times. He's too robotic. I'd flee from this man if you are not interested in polscience and ruining your semester.Attendance MANDATORY, late coming will cost you 3/4 of a mark.each day's attendance is a% of your grade.Got an A- though!
I found his class a bit boring. There's not much room for students' opinions, it's mostly just an exploration of predefined positions. His current events journals are kind of cool because you actually get to develop your own ideas. It is a pretty easy class though, if you can write well and show up everyday, you'll do well.
the class was pretty boring, but it's a writing intensive class and papers were due pretty much every week or so. he's a fair grader.midterm paper& final letter essay. He's very nice and answers your questions nicely. there were 13 response papers due, and you could miss three. if u did all, he might've let you get by with extra credit on it
Boring professor who assigns a LOT of busy work. Cares more about citations and plagiarizing than material. I learned almost nothing while writing papers for almost every class. He's a nice guy, but the class is dry and mostly repeats high school American history.
I am in his class, right now, he is rather boring, like other comments it is a repeat of High School History courses. If you did well in high school history you can do well in this class.
Such a boring professor! He seems to be nice, maybe the subject itself is unbearable. Too many boring papers to write, way too many stupid requirements for each paper, he is indeed robotic! Hated the class and glad it is almost over!
It is true that his lectures are sometimes boring, but overall an easy class considering that the midterm and final are the only two papers that could be considered college level.
His Honors Political Science class is a ton of work and he's strict as hell. Seems nice, though.
His reports and exams are reasonable. But I warn you, this guy is painfully boring regardless of your interest in politics.
He is incredibly boring and attendance is not mandatory. Like most other history/political science related professors, he gets very serious about the quality of sources. He makes you do short 2 page papers, but you only need to do 4 out of 12, so that's great. Then we have two take home exams and a final exam (also take home).
Interesting subject matter and for the most part, I enjoyed the majority of the reading. However, as someone before me stated, Karapin cares more on citations and plagiarizing than the actual content of his papers. Passing but do not plan to take him again. Seems like an okay person and easy to pass but way too much writing.
Nice guy as others have stated the class lectures are pretty boring but attendance is not mandatory you can just do the work on your own and you should be fine (if you can write). Good for an intro class if attendance had been mandatory this might be a different review...Just do the work and you'll get an A
He's okay. Not all that helpful with a paper I tried writing instead some take home test. Oh well.
took him for protest movements, really clear, 18 short papers due almost every day but you only have to do 8 of them. some ppl hated him so you might or might not. mandatory attendance, easy grader, and smart
this professor is extremely fair and helpful, very dull and monotone lectures though. no in class exams: 1 paper midterm +1 paper final + 8 short papers + weekly journals + in class presentation + anywhere from 30-100 pgs of reading per night = be prepared to do a LOT of work.
Don't let the 26 page syllabus scare you. He is very, very thorough with directions (which I find helpful). Nice guy, always friendly and answers questions. Lectures can be a bit boring, but he knows his stuff. I would recommend him. Workload is not bad: take-home essay midterm/final and assigned 13 short papers but you only have to write 4
His class can be boring, but he knows what he is doing. Attendance is not required. No class exams, but 3 take home exams. Overall, I liked his class. TA is really helpful!
First thing you should know is that I'm a great student, I'm doing well in his class, I have no vendetta against him BUT: he is one of two awful professors I've had at Hunter. He doesn't seem to know much more than some of the students, he's often very rude and despite his 30 page course outline, the course lacks structure. Don't take him.
He seems like a decent guy, but just incredibly boring. It takes a really special kind of professor to make me dread going to a class about protests movements.
First, I am a person who hates politics by nature, and I never imagine myself doing good in such complicated class. The professor is the best. He's very respectful, knowledgeabe, and ready to help. No attendance is taken, and only 4 papers, out of 19, are due. Two exams and a final paper are take home. The TA is super helpful and courteous.
I'm on the fence about this professor. He's not for everyone. Don't ever think about being late or talking out of turn, he will snap at you. He's very smart and encourages participation but the class was often dull and his 30 page syllabus was just too much. On the plus side, no attendance, only 4/19 papers, two exams, take home final.
Lectures are interesting, you can take a lot from him if you're interested in Poly Sci. The course is as easy as you make it. If you do the assigned papers early on (4 out of 19 need to be done), the course will be relatively easy. He's big on writing format. Wants x amount of citations per page and is strict about it. Textbook needed for papers
He took what could've been an interesting class (Pol. of Climate Change) & made it boring through his monotone lectures, lack of enthusiasm, and minimal engagement with his students. Assignments seemed like busy work & he expected more than the 300-level courses I've taken. Would not recommend, hard grader, condescending & very bland
Lectures are boring and monotone. He's a little condescending at times, is very boring overall. Have to read, have to go to class. Assigned to do 8/20 short papers throughout the semester that were pointless, and other assignments he expected too much out of me. Would not recommend, would not take again. Ruined the class for me (Pol of Climate chg)
I really liked Professor Karapin's class. I thought the short papers, along with the essays, were very straight forward and simple. He's a good professor who seems really passionate about what he is teaching.
Some of the material covered in class was interesting yet a lot of the assignments were pointless and the grading criteria for the midterm and final seemed chaotic despite the 37 page syllabus. Condescending at times and more focused on discussing mundane topics than actually discussing something useful and thought provoking.
Professor Karapin is a great professor but very strict and makes you work fir it. Can be intimidating, hates when people are late for class but I think that as long as you let him know why youre having trouble he will help you and be kind to you. We had to do 8 out of 16 short papers, a midtern paper and a final paper and a short presentation.
His syllabus is extremely detailed. Theres a short paper due every class but you only have to do four of them (there are 19 in total to choose from.) Attendance isn't mandatory but if you hand in a short paper, you have to stay in class that day b/c he asks questions to those who handed in the papers. Two essay exams. Final is an essay too.
Karapin has a 24 page syllabus that is extremely clear on what is expected of you and how you will be graded. The most important advice I can offer you is to write perfect short papers as quickly into the semester as you can, and attend all lectures before test 2 (lectures WILL help you answer the tests). This class is easy if you try.
so many quizzes, sometimes 3 per class. So much reading and he is not that nice at all. He ruined the class for me.
Karapin usually comes off as condescending. He thinks he's helping you but he's just being rude tbh. The TA grades the regularly due papers (only 6 needed) but he grades some of the final papers super harshly. He takes off so many points for literally minor mistakes. Dry lectures too. Final paper is what'll stress you out the most.
37 page syllabus so you REALLY know what you wants, not a detail is missed. Lectures are interesting but if you aren't totally focused you will get tired. Attendance is integral to you passing. 6 short papers, 1 final paper and 2 noncumulative tests. If you are a weak writer, I don't reccomend this class for you.
Very professorial type and well-spoken. Sadly, he is just your average Liberal professor in higher education that think his view is above all else. Came across to me as a Beto O'Rourke tribute act. The class itself is interesting when personal views don't get in the way and manageable if you put in a good amount of effort.
I didn't really like Professor Karapin in the beginning, however, he is actually a very nice and hardworking professor. Come to class, go over powerpoints and TopHat quiz questions, do a majority of the short answers (only 6 out of the 19 needed) and you will receive a pretty decent to a good grade! No technology in class, but everything is online.
Karapin can be boring at times but the material is interesting. His instructions for papers are very detailed and clear so if you follow exactly what he asks for then you cannot get a bad grade. Tophat quizzes are also helpful because they show up on the midterm and final. Overall, he's a solid choice and if you put in effort, you will do well.
The usual U.S. History class and a good way to practice writing short papers. Attend the lectures or you'll be lost because the slides only do so much. If you talk or use your phone he'll politely tell to CUT IT OUT so try not to get caught.
Interesting class, with an extremely intelligent professor. Readings are long, but class discussions are very informative and thought provoking. Attendance is mandatory and will make tests much easier. May not be the easiest class, but grading criteria for papers is very clear and detailed, so high grades are easily attainable.
Very professional professor, however, assigns a lot of readings that can be difficult to manage with your other classes.
Be prepared to read and learn on your own. Short papers- The grader- Tatiana- was very helpful. Talk to her. Focus on the format. Be prepared to explain your points in class if you submit a paper that day. Midterm and final- a lot of the questions at the end of his lecture slides are in these. Most questions come from material on the slideshow too
Prof. Karapin was very straightforward and a good teacher - I felt bad for him that he had to be teaching such basic information that should have been known by everyone in class already but was not. If you're a reasonably informed American citizen, this class is an easy pass, but be ready to write a lot of tedious little mini-papers.
He is great professor that is super helpful and easy to talk to.
Class was okay. Mostly based around a few writing assignments, so it was pretty easy.
Really good and chill professor. The short paper was only two pages long which shouldn't be any big issue. Lecture heavy since he could go on talking for 80% of the time.
Truly a great professor, class is easy so long as you pay attention and do what you are supposed to do.
Overall solid gen ed course, teaches it fairly from an unbiased point of view which is so rare at Hunter. Class was easy as long as you did the assignments and knew the information on midterm/final. Would absolutely recommend taking any class with Prof. Karapin.
Very straight-forward & you know exactly what Professor Karapin is looking for. He clearly cares about his students but having a large intro class makes it difficult to really give any individual attention.
Prof. Karapin's class was very informative on the American government. He's really specific on what he wants in terms of short papers and the Letter to a National Offical. Attendance doesn't really matter, so as long as you read the textbook and readings, you'll be fine for the tests. Overall, it's an easy class if you just follow his directions.
A lot of information needs to be learned in this class, but there are only a handful of assignments and two exams for the whole semester. He has specific criteria in his grading but it's easy to follow. He has a lot of knowledge on the subject and pays attention to detail in his explanation so you understand the material as well.
Professor Karapin is really an amazing professor. He does not give a lot of work and his grading rubric is lenient. Class is not mandatory, but there are some really good discussions in class. I would say, though, that if you are looking for specific feedback, he does not give much. All in all, he is a great teacher.
His course is very basic information about the United States. Therefore if you are good at US history and government, it is easy for you to get a good grade. He is a very fair grader but you need to do too much reading.
This class is good. As long as you pay attention you will not have any problems in this class.
Professor Karapin is wonderful; he is clear about what he expects from you and his lectures do not dissapoint. (Not to mention he has an impressive curriculum). I would recommend him to anyone wether you're a Political Science major or you're simply interested in taking an easy but enriching intro level course.
Professor Karapin is a very sweet guy and a great teacher. He was. very clear on what assignments you needed to do in order to pass. He assigned 2/20 papers each worth 24%, the midterm and final are multiple-choice making it easier than other classes. Although attendance was not mandatory if you wrote a paper you should show receive credit.
I really appreciated Professor Karapin's kindness and leniency during this time. I did not feel too stressed completing work and was able to finish everything on time. Short papers and the letter to a national official assignment really helped to boost my grade. Just make sure to attend all lectures and participate when you can!
This class is based on the readings that is assigned for each meeting. On the syllabus, it clearly states what you have to do and what are the deadlines for each. He collects two short papers with the highest grade and is recommended to write more than two to increase your chance of getting a better grade. His lectures are understandable.
Professor Karapin is very experienced. He and the grader give good feedback. His instructions are clear and to the point. He makes it known what is needed to perform well in the class. The only downside is that there is a lot of reading in the class.
Almost everything you need to know about the course is in the syllabus - you just have to read it! He also gives access to the slides beforehand so that's very helpful. He's a great professor all in all, he answers questions to the best of his ability and although his class is mostly lecture heavy, he doesn't make it boring.
3 writing assignments and 2 exams - clarifies the "Graded by few things." His lecture notes are an abridged version of his lectures - he has so much more to say. You'll want to pay attention so you won't miss anything, but he'll summarize the important information. Exams are multiple choice on blackboard. Hopefully, he'll curve the final grade.
Karapin is a sweetie!! He genuinely cares about his students and the subject matter that he teachers!
Lots of reading but the work is fair.
Professor Karapin class is lecture heavy, do not skip his class, you will not pass. He gives too many papers and is a strict and tough grader. He will make you participate, participation matters in this class. His lectures can get boring, but please pay attention or else you will be lost the whole semester. Try not to procastinate, it will cost you
He's a good professor, there's just a lot of readings and some of them can be quite long. But if you're interested in them, they are informational.
Thoughtful, well-organized, expects and encourages student participation.
Great professor. Accommodating, and really cares about students and what he teaches. Considering the pandemic, he was very caring and considerate. Good course, do the readings, pay attention and do all of your assignments and you will be perfectly fine! I recommend you take this professor for sure. Not too heavy on material either.
8 short papers and you're given the chance to write more to earn perfect scores. Papers are really easy, as long as you answer the questions, you'll be fine. Research journals that go towards the final, which is a policy proposal. Karapin is super smart and knows his stuff about this class. Just do the work and you'll be fine!
most of the assignments are writing-based and the rubric is extremely clear-cut which i appreciate i know what the professor is looking for in my essays. he is extremely understanding with deadlines as well and his lectures are helpful in understanding the subject
You have to work for your grade in this class. There are usually 100+ pages to read per meeting, short papers are due and the professor calls on you to participate. Attendance is mandatory, you also need to keep your camera on to get participation grade. However, the professor is very knowledgable. He always gives useful feedbacks to improve.
if you're taking this class, just be on time for the meeting he always calls everyone before starting class. even though he looks really serious, he is a great professor and you can talk to him if you need help with anything.
Be prepared to attend long lectures, be on time, actively participate, read 100+ pages of content in preparation for each class, and to write 8+ short papers throughout the semester. He is very knowledgeable, a tough but fair grader, and makes all his expectations known in his 25 page syllabus. He makes himself available to students when needed.
Professor Karapin does a fantastic job of really laying out what his expectations of you for the semester are. The readings weren't long compared to a lot of other classes I have had. He always makes himself available which is appreciative and he has been understanding when it comes to assignments as well. A solid pick.
He is a very nice professor and you can tell he really enjoys teaching. With classes being online, he really tries to make the lecture more interactive.
This class is easy as long as you pay attention to due dates and to the lecture notes. Attendance is not mandatory and all lecture notes are already uploaded at the beginning of the semester. His papers come with specific details and instructions. They are easy if you pay attention.
One of the best professors I've had. His lectures are long but very interesting. A lot of reading but nothing you won't be able to handle. Very caring and gives back constructive feedback. I highly recommend you take his class.
If you want an organized professor who is competent and fair with workload, take this guy.
Solid class, no exams, we only had to write 4 short papers (out of a total 21 readings) to answer questions about in the corresponding lecture class. Overall a very interesting class, In the final paper you got to pick your own topic which made it way more enjoyable than just a multiple-choice exam
Good professor, lots of papers depending on what course you're taking but feedback is given on papers immediately. Final paper is a little hefty but there's usually no midterms or final exams- just papers.
Prof. Karapin is a gem. I learned so much from him. If you are a poli science major- take him!!
Reliable, well structured class. Expectations for the semester are clear and Prof Karapin doesn't try to challenge you unnecessarily. Reading responses, participation, and a final news analysis paper make up the grade. Very simple but worthwhile class. Would recommend for him for really any class.
Prof. Karapin has created a course that is clear on what he expects from you. If you follow the syllabus and keep up with you assignments, this class will not be a pain in your mind.
Professor Karapin is great! He gives many opportunities for students to get their grades up and gives good feedback along with that. His syllabus is very organized and his lectures are easy to follow along. I would definitely take another class with him!
Professor Karapin is a good professor to have. He has a lot of standards for his grading methods, but once you meet those standards it's impossible not to get a good grade. You have to make sure you participate in class and come prepared to speak especially if you turn in a paper. Overall this class was an enjoyable experience.
Overall, Prof. Karapin is a great choice as a prof; the lessons he gives give a lot of information regarding the topic, and other than reading a bunch, the class is fun and interesting. I highly recommend it.
This class only required 4 short papers and a final paper with an outline and presentation. His syllabus is very detailed and super helpful. The work is very manageable so it's not too hard to pass with an easy A, he gives multiple opportunities to write short papers to get a better grade.
Clear instructions, outlines for papers. One beef I have is he is very exact on what he wants. If you don't follow instructions well, you will find yourself having a hard time scoring high on the assignments. NO late short papers accepted. Be on time coming he calls roll. Lectures are clear, he will call you up if he feels you are lagging behind.
Professor Karapin engages his students in informative topics pertaining to news media and politics abroad and makes time to talk to any of his students when they need clarification or any help on any topics covered in the class. Participation is a vital part of the course and students must write four short papers throughout the course.
He is a great professor! Would recommend.
great professor. class is lecture and discussion based. coursepack purchase required and 4 short hw assignments to do at your leisure throughout the semester plus a final project. highly recommended
Professor Karapin is very respectful and punctual with his teaching. He always grades assignments and give feedback on time. He always have clear rubrics for all assignments. Definitely recommend taking him for POLSC 21769.
Very friendly Professor whose lessons are easy to understand and he does not overload you with assignments. His grading rubric is clear and he's always accessible after class. Interesting class, especially if you're into the news and politics. I highly recommend taking this class with Professor Karapin.
The expectations of the class were all very clear and reasonable. There was a good balance of lecturing, discussion, and activities. Not exactly a fascinating, "must-take" kind of class, but very solid.
If I could describe this professor in one word, it would be this: fair. Everything he wants you to is outlined in the syllabus, you know what you're getting with him. Even if things are harder, they're stable so you have time or a complete idea of what he wants. The only thing I didn't like was the need for the textbook course-pack, but he's solid.
Instructor always is able to explain any topic in greater detail inorder to benefit the student. Always respectful of different viewpoints and encourages dialogue between students!
Great class and great professor for virtual learning you must turn on your camera and participate.
Took Media and Politics with him. Great course, and he's super knowledgeable on every topic. I mentioned Professor Karapin in another class of mine and another student called him "one of the best professors at Hunter." I look forward to taking Politics and Climate Change with him next semester.
Very clear about what he wants in paper writing. Good mix in lecturing and trying to create discussions. Good critiques of homework so that you understand where you need to improve. Solid style overall.
Great professor! Clear expectations and good lectures. Would absolutely take a class with him again.
The assignments are straightforward and clear. Grading reflects the course content. He has a good mix of in-class lectures and discussions.
Interesting Class, not too difficult, stimulating
Karapin is a fantastic professor. He is genuine, straightforward, and really cares about his students. Ive taken two of his classes and I can safely say he is my favorite professor at Hunter. He assigns such interesting readings and really knows how to keep people engaged. I highly recommend taking his course.
you should take this class, the professor is very good
Great communication and lectures. All around interests discussed and participation was encouraged. Respectful and fair.
This class is fairly easy to pass as long as you keep track of how many assignments youve done since you can choose when to do them. The lectures are super informative and the professor gets grades back pretty fast.
Great professor, is very knowledgable. Tried to be as engaging as possible on Zoom, which is hard since it's a 3hr class. Very kind & understanding. But this is not an easy class, which is why I wouldn't take again. Exams are too difficult and I wish they were weighted less heavily, but the papers are easy to write. If interested in POLSC, take him
Good class, but strict grading.
A really good Professor is you don't like writing much. The Midterm and final is a bit difficult, but you only have to write four papers the whole semester.
If you can pay keen attention during the 3 hour lectures, then you'll be golden. If not the lectures are pretty helpful however it is a lot of information to take in all at once and they may not cover everything that was discussed in class. Attention is mandatory (you may miss up to two classes however you will miss out on a lot).
The Professor was very accessible when you needed help with anything. He always replied to emails right away. The readings were long but they were all very interesting. Be sure to listen to every thing he is saying because he will call on you randomly and ask you questions. I like his paper criteria, where he assigned 20 papers and only graded 4.
This class was very educational, homework was very simple and straightforward, easy to understand and light. His lectures aren't too serious and always asks for questions if anyone is confused, very understanding and a good/ fun course to take.
Great prof and clearly knows his stuff! He gave clear feedback.
I really enjoyed Professor Karapins class. He is a great professor who is passionate about his work and tries to make his lectures as inclusive as possible. Grade is based on two tests which can seem a little scary but I would definitely take his class again.
really a nice guy. Only 2 exams so grade matters and no curves. Nice informative lectures compliment the reading. He was very respectful and not intimiating.
Lots of reading, and most questions on the test are more about the readings than the lectures. Very chill, you get to skip two lectures without penalty.
Hes a very kind professor and clearly enjoys teaching. There are only two exams so be prepared for them as they weigh heavy on your grade.
POLSCI 100 was a fairly decent class, with the grading components only being participation, the midterm and the final. He also provides the power points he lectures on, which is extremely helpful. Doing the readings and listening in class will ensure a good grade.
Prof. Karapin is a kind guy, he definitely cares for the students in his class. His lectures are informative with some videos mixed in between, and is reliant on short stories from a coursepak. You need that coursepak to succeed along with a textbook. Overall though, great class! Would definitely take him again.
Professor Karapin was a great teacher. I thought his analysis of the topics was really well said and easy to comprehend. For all lessons, he always stopped to ask if everyone was okay, and if anyone had any questions. His testing is straightforward with the material we learned in class. He is caring and approachable. I recommended taking him.
A good professor. Maybe a little condescending at times, but not in a particularly mean-spirited way. More in a "I'm not mad just disappointed" kind of way.
I believe that if Professor Karapin would assign homework that is related to the lessons, students would use it as a study guide for tests. That way students would not feel so confused while studying for the next test.
Lots of readings and long lectures. However, this class is very educational and an easy A. You just have to show up to class and participate when you can. He does not give out homework or quizzes. Just the midterm and a final ! Aside from that you can tell he cares about his students. He will answer all your questions with no problem.
He's a nice professor and seems to care about his students. There are required readings for this class and the lectures are long but overall wasn't bad class.
The class is lecture-heavy and the grade depends on the midterm and final, however, he tries to make classes interesting and I liked his approach to most topics. Reading is very important for your participation, but also because the tests sometimes depend on them, so get ready to read. Otherwise, he is pretty nice.
I really enjoyed prof. karapin! While this is a topic I'm super interested in/know a lot about, he still kept me interested and learning new things. There is a lot of homework, about 20-page readings with a short paper (1-2 pages) due each class. HOWEVER, you only need to submit 8/19 of them. He's super understanding and accommodating as well!
Good class. professor is very accommodating to students with special situations.
Prof Karapin is a very active prof, his class is very engaging which makes the class enjoyable. Attendance is mandatory and short papers are a big portion of the grade however, if you do all the assignments asked of and participate in class you will do good in the course.
His gives a lor of readings but you should use that as a way to gain participation points because participation matters a lot.
Professor Karapin is not that hard of a professor. He gives a total of 19 short paper responses and you only have to do 8 of them. Two presentations and one final with no midterm. Hes not that hard of a professor and not a tough grader. Hes also understandable and does accommodate when needed.
Knows his stuff really well and gives great feedback and will always clarify what he means if you ask. Just do the readings and you'll be fine.
Professor Karapin is amazing, knowledgeable, and gives clear grading criteria. You can choose which short papers you want to write, and you get a broad choice of topics for the letter. I have learned a lot thanks to this class, even though I didn't have to memorize anything.
This course is lecture-heavy which I feel comes with the subject. There are ideas and concepts that need to be broken down to fully understand, which the professor prioritizes. Always lets us ask questions. I will say that if you are someone who struggles with concentrating on lectures or is easily distracted this may not be the class for you.
Prof Karapin is really passionate about the subject he teaches which is something to be admired. He is also really understanding and does his best to accommodate students. The only issue I had with this class was the workload because we had a multitude of readings each week that were really confusing as well as lots of papers. Overall a good Prof.
Professor Karapin was a wonderful professor. Very knowledgeable. The final in this class was a letter to a policy official. You only had to do short papers for homework. Out of all, you are only required to do 8. All based on reading. pretty simple. The only thing i didn't like was that he made us present these things in front of the class.
I've taken Professor Karapin for both POLSC 27235 and POLSC110. He's a very straightforward professor, very lecture based, and you participate through the short papers. He assigns you 19, but for this course you only had to do 8. Gives great feedback, and is very knowledgeable. Please take him!
Prof. Karapin's course is well organized. The topics can be challenging if you do not know much about Climate Change, but the professor will take his time to explain everything. Participation matters a lot, so get ready to share your response to the eight short papers you are required to do and the two presentations.
good professor, made an engaging online class which is hard to do, would take again
Pretty chill class, there is reading and he says its recommended but I never did it and he'd go through it before class, make sure to pay attention to the questions he asks at the end of the lectures bc they are super helpful for reviewing for the exams!
Very informative, easy to talk to. His lectures are not difficult as long as you take notes. Tests are based on notes and readings. The only difficult thing is doing the readings since some can be long. He is very kind and will help. There are only two exams. Would take again
He lectures HEAVY, but solid guy in all honesty.
Professor Karapin is a great professor. He is clear and concise with his grading policy. This semester, he gave only 2 exams and the only other available grade was your participation in class. Attendance is mandatory. There is a coursepack that you should buy and his slides are great preparations for the two exams in this course.
Class is organized in assigned readings from a textbook (provided free) and additional readings provided in a Coursepack - purchased. Then, in class professor lectures on the topic for most of the time, with some short films or zoom breakout rooms. There is one midterm and one final - no homeworks. Grade is based only on exams. Do the readings!
The class is easy to understand, he's thorough. Nice person. Class can get really boring and the biggest issue was the two exams being the only grades you will receive, no other assignments or study guides but he has slides posted.
Professor Karapin is a real gem. Graded based on class participation, 1 midterm, 1 final (all multiple choice). This semester we had no hw, just pop up quiz poll during class which is not counted towards your grade. As long as you listen to his lectures and jot down the answers for those quizzes (he gives answers and explanation) youll get an A.
Honest opinion: his class was boring (I took it online). I don't mean to be scary, but the grading criteria for this class were 20% Participation, 40% Midterm exam, and 40% Final exam. The exams are all multiple choice, with about 60 questions each. They were pretty difficult and requires having almost 10/10 memory to retain info from all readings.
This class wasnt too difficult, there wasnt any papers to submit only one test and the final. Theres reading to do before each meeting. Attendance was mandatory and the professor made the class feel welcoming. Professor Karapin is a great professor and made the class engaging and fun.
Unless you have a really good memory, I wouldn't recommend taking this class. Grading is based on 2 exams that require you to not understand but memorize most of the content in the class, and that's about 60 pages of reading per class. There is no extra credit, so if you do bad on even 1 of the 2 exams, then your chance to do get a good grade is 0.
Professor Karapin is understanding and prompt with emails/ feedback. His classes are interesting and the readings weren't too long but they were interesting. There are many opportunities to write short papers. You can learn a lot in this class, and it isn't tedious. Definitely would take another course with professor Karapin again.
Professor Karapin is very respectful and understanding. He greets his classes with a nice welcoming. His assignments are straight forward and easy overall. Only requires 4 out of 20+ short papers assigned to be turned in and a final paper with presentation on news items.
Professor Karapin was very knowledgable with his lectures. I learned a lot about democracy and the media. This course gave me an eye opener about news. Polite professor, thoughtful, and responsive to emails. If you do the work you could get a good grade.
Clear guidelines for assignments. Interesting lectures. Has a good amount of preparation assignments for the final paper. It can be a bit tough when it comes to presentation feedback but it doesn't affect your grade. Would take again!
We mostly focused on information from the textbook and a couple of video examples. We did a lot of presentations (1 on a news item then 1 more about your final paper). Though I got tired for writing for the outline and things it was honestly pretty useful to have to be able to start writing the final paper. He's good and really wants participation.
Professor Karapin is a very prepared and caring professor. His assignments are broken down with very clear directions so if you follow them you will be fine. The readings are interesting but not too hard, and the class discussion is engaging, Overall I really enjoyed this class and it wasnt too hard. Take it.
The professor had a clear grading criteria. The class itself was not a lot of work and was manageable. The readings that were provided were easy-to-read and interesting, but quite lengthy. Professor is knowledgable in this field, and if you are having trouble, do not hesitate to reach out to him! Great, intelligent, and a kind professor!
The amount of work given is much more than what any other professors give. Level 3 and higher professors don't give as much work or are as picky on how to format the papers given.
Professor Karapin is an extremely knowledgeable professor. He is great at explaining difficult concepts!
this course was taken because it was a required class. it is extremely lecture-heavy with somewhat difficult midterm and final questions that weren't gone over in class. but the professor was a kind one and the assignments were pretty manageable.
Prof. Karapin is a great person. His lectures are very lengthy and with too much information presented per lecture. He only gave two short papers to do which were very doable. The short papers based on the reading for his class, very lengthy. Overall his class isn't very hard but if you don't pay attention you will be lost. The two test were hard.
The class is very informative and lecture-based. There are two exams and short papers assigned but there is a lot of time throughout the semester to submit them. Attendance is mandatory but the class is calm and very do-able even with a busy schedule.
Do all the readings and attend every lecture.
The workload in this course was super light compared to my other polsc courses! The professor was always understanding and organized, I would take this class over if i could.
Explains the material clearly. Always available outside of class. He cares about his students and encourages participation. There were only two required essays but we could do more if we wanted to. Gives good feedback!
Professor Karapin is clear for his class requirements and organized. He is not a tough grader, he lectures a lot. Participation is only required for writing assignments.
This class is very informative and based on PowerPoint lectures. There are two exams and short papers to write with clear guidelines and expectations. There is reasonable amount of time to submit the work throughout the semester. The professor is very knowledgeable and kind.
The class is definitely manageable if you have other time consuming classes. The readings can be hefty, but you don't have to read every single one if you're not able to. Just take notes of important ideas during lectures to refer to before the midterm and final. He is very understanding and a knowledgeable professor. If you like politics, take it.
Lovely guy. Very soft-spoken and willing to listen and respond to what you have to say. This class will frame current events which is really the point. Two short papers of about 450 words are easy to ace. Professor Karapin's area of expertise is climate politics so feel free to talk to him about the climate and read his book about it!
He's a nice professor and the class isn't too difficult. Not a lot of writing involved, only two short papers are necessary. The lectures are interesting and based on the readings for class. The tests are also based on the readings as well as the lectures. The class isn't too difficult as long as you pay attention in class.
Great professor with a very clear grading criteria. Grade mostly based on exams, but two papers, participation, and a current events presentation too. Lecture heavy, but overall doable class.
A very standard introductory government course. The professor was very moderate in his politics and teaching style. The homework is ridiculously easy, you only have to do a single verbal 5-minute current events presentation. You also have to write a minimum of 2 short papers (400-600 words) on the homework reading. Tests are moderately hard.
Professor Karapin definitely makes his course simple and not stressful whatsoever. His syllabus and asks are very reasonable, as he does not assign too much work; moreover, the work he does gives is very straightforward, and easy to get a good grade as long as you follow his grading criteria.
A great professor!!! His classes are usually lecture-style however when writing a short paper(every student has to write 2), you are expected to briefly talk about it. Not a difficult class however the exams may be a bit challenging.
Short current events presentation, 2 short papers (you can do more til you get a perfect score), 2 exams, & attendance is taken (cameras on). Easy grader as long as you fulfill his requirements. The sooner you look ahead at the short paper prompts, the easier it'll be for you. Pay attention to the practice questions. Exam grades are worth a lot.
Students prepare to read, write, attend lecture and show your face. The class isn't extremely difficult and he makes an effort to create an interactive environment. Students are required to participate in class discussions, write short papers, and submit assignments on time. Grading includes 2Exams, 2Short-Papers, 1Presentation, & participation.
He is a very good professor and his class was easy
Tells you what to expect and very clear grading criteria! Wants you to succeed!
Two textbooks for class. Covers a broad range of topics. I would say a good intro course to politics in the contemporary media environment. Straightforward, never condescending, and makes the online-format work. I would take Professor Karapin again.
Such a great professor. Very kind and knowledgable. Great at making things as easy to follow as possible, while making class discussions interesting and informative. Not too difficult if you simply do the short papers and the readings. Highly recommend
Extremely clear in all & any direction given. I truly appreciated his transparency, along with how well he managed a completely online class with a large number of students. He made sure to familiarize himself with us even through our online platform, and was very responsive to any emails received. Also super understanding! Highly recommend!
not a lot of work. 3 short papers (450 words) just basically have to answer the reading questions and follow the guideline, easy 10/10. a news presentation and a final paper, professor is really nice as well
I really recommend this class. I learned how to critically analyze a news item. I highly recommend this class.
This class was very fair and actually simple if you just follow instructions which the professor makes very clear! Very nice and understanding professor who you can communicate with. Participation is very important in this class and there are a couple presentations but not hard and the professor makes you feel comfortable. Recommend!
Prof. Karapin is genuinely a great professor, super kind and knows how to keep the class engaged. Be prepared to do weekly readings but many of them are about current events so it wont get boring. Prof. Karapin also values your time, there are 4 short papers based on the readings that you can turn in any time throughout the semester.
good teacher. Not too much work in the class. Would recommend.
If you looking for a class that has substance and a Professor who motivates you to learn, then this is the class. Professor Karapin is very inspirational and does a great job at teaching the material. He's probably one of the best Professors I've taken at Hunter who actually motivates me to learn. He's very understanding, friendly and funny.
Amazing professor! My second time taking him. Very clear instructions on what he expects from short papers and presentations. Very understanding and I learned a lot in class about bias in media. Recommend taking his class!
Excellent professor, 4 two-page essays, a final paper that is broken down into multiple assignments that include presentations and an outline. Participation is important. A manageable amount of work. It was the best class I took this semester. There are many rates done on the same day because we did it together as a class.
requires purchase coursepack which is annoying , attendance required and calls on people for discussion based on readings. midterm and final based on lectures and readings - asks some specific details in exmas on the reading so you have to quickly skim through it as no way to memorize such detail. overall nice discussion in class but tests annoying
I'm not a political science student, so this was a nice change from my normal classes. I thought this was an excellent look into climate change policy in the US and internationally, and I enjoyed that the class also examined the psychological and social influences impacting climate change advocacy. Prof is highly educated and a good lecturer.
Professor Karapin is great! His lectures are interesting and he always makes sure that everyone is actively engaged. He assigns 17 short papers and 8 of them are required (you can do more to ensure the lowest grades are dropped). There is a bit of reading, but nothing not manageable. I would take him again.
Short papers, you get to choose what days you do them out 17 papers. Fairly straight forward.
Prof. Karapin definitely knows what he's talking about and is very well versed in his field. However there is a lot of reading and writing involved with this course that I did not find necessary. Additionally, this course is very lecture heavy and not as engaging as I wish it would have been.
This teacher is very knowledgeable about climate change policies as well as American politics. This course is writing intensive so there are quite a few short papers, however, the professor gives clear grading criteria and feedback to help you do well. He also drops the lowest score.
If you're a polsc major, you should take this class. All the assignments are straightforward and easy to do. 8 short papers, 2 (short) presentations, and 1 final paper. The short papers aren't bad at all, there are 17 assigned and he'll count the 8 highest grades, so you really only need to do 8. You'll need to buy a coursepack though
You can do well in this class if you participate and stay on top of your work. There are no tests, but 8 short (500 word) papers that you submit periodically. The final is also written; a letter to an elected official. Participation definitely matters. The classes can get boring with a lot of lecturing but you can definitely do well and learn.
If you're someone who enjoys the legislative process and more objective and bureaucratic side to political science, take this class. The only gripe I had was the lack of sociological lenses applied to issues since climate change is a social issue just as much as it is environmental.
Roger is a clearly qualified professor to teach the class, but his style of teaching takes away from his expertise. You only learn the subject matter if you choose to do that day's short paper (17 are assigned any 8 are required) This could be a very interesting topic but the lectures are somewhat boring and not super informative, mostly graphs.
Professor Karapin can be a bit passive-aggressive but is also very kind. He will grade your papers exactly like listed in the rubric so pay keen attention to the guidelines. You will NEED the course pack for the 8 papers he assigns so reach out to previous students to get the book at a discounted price. Purchasing it online can be a bit expensive.
You'll learn a lot in this class about climate change and the political aspects of it. It's a lot of readings and they can be difficult but he goes over them in class. He explains well what he wants in the short papers and final projects. Very interesting class so you should definitely take it!
The professor and the class was pretty straight forward and it doesn't take a lot of effort to do pretty well in the course. There is no real homework other than the 8 short papers and the final paper which aren't that time consuming.
Great professor, rely heavily on the lecture notes. Mostly does lectures and less quizzes. Overall, great professor.
I really enjoyed taking this class. There was no real work outside of class besides the 4 papers. The multiple choice exams for 2 exams are relatively easy as long as you study. Slideshows were easy to understand and what he expected of us was clear. The only negative thing of this class is that it was boring for students not interested in politics.
He is nice and sets up the information for the tests in an organized manner.
Roger is very chill and tries his very hardest to make learning interesting, not strict at all.
This class was very straightforward. Prof. Karapin is very clear about the assignments/grading criteria. There is a current events presentation, 4 short papers to be completed at anytime throughout the semester, and a midterm and final exam. I recommend!
You'll learn a lot about the political system in the US if you went in not knowing a lot. Although he assigns a lot of short papers you can choose to only write a select few since he grades the highest papers, and his exams so far have only been multiple choice
overall, this class was alright, you do have to buy the coursepack because you have to write 4 papers on some of the readings. There are also questions based on the coursepack that will be on the final and midterm. All he does is read from the slides. You are assigned to do one current events presentation. If you like reading then you'll be fine.
Roger is a quite decent educator, he does consider the students when he is teaching, however, there are moments he could be a bit more understanding he claims to be
He clearly conveys to students why he plans to teach and what the day has in plan in his syllabus. A good idea is to read the necessary pages before the day of each lesson.
Decent professors, only need to complete 4 short papers based on required readings stickler for grammar. Posts lecture slides on Blackboard beginning of the term. Midterm questions are usually posted earlier in the lectures. Some required readings are also on the exam.
The professor was extremely professional when discussing sensitive or controversial topics and showed respect for all opinions. The material was conveyed through PowerPoint slides that were also made available to us as well as through lecture. He answered all questions and concerns very thoroughly.
His lectures feel really long, but he is nice. I despise political science but for the most part the class was useful. There are heavy readings and they show up in the midterm and final.
he is a good teacher , one class I didn't have to do much on , had to do 4 short papers easy and only 75 multiple chose questions .
The class was well organized: 2 exams (non cumulative), 4 short papers (1-2 pages), and a short 5 minute presentation along with participation. Professor Karapin is very knowledgable and clearly cares about the class and content he is teaching. Overall very approachable professor, and welcoming and organized teaching style.
This was pretty manageable as long as your keeping up with the readings and doing the required work. There were many lectures and some group work. Overall, I recommend taking this course.
Professor Karapin, is very easy going and an easy person to talk to whenever you feel talk or confused on a certain material he teaching. Doesn't ask for a lot of homework, likes participation, and uses some great slides when teaching his lecture. I like the way he incorporates group discussions and films to better our understanding of the material
This class had easy enough work, 4 short papers and a midterm + final, but the material itself was presented in a very matter of fact manner. I would have liked if the class was more engaging
Really good lecturer, the class is a lot of lecturing but the lectures are engaging and the slides are informative(all the slides for the semester can be found on blackboard). The grading criteria was very clear,4 short papers(500words), an in class presentation and the midterm and final. Very manageable and understanding, wants us to succeed.
Assigns not a lot of homework. The exams are multiple choice so it was very easy to pass. Has clear grading criteria. Also, you need to present a 5-minute current events presentation. Overall an easily organized class to take.
Professor Karapin was a fantastic professor. The class was pretty easy. It only had four short papers out of 20, a short presentation, and a midterm and final. If you come to class and participate regularly, you will do fine. The course pack you have to buy was annoying, considering it's just xerox copies of other readings.
Professor knows his stuff, but he just reads off from the screen and can make the class boring sometimes only four papers out of 20 are due. one current event presentation.
This is a great course to take. It is content-heavy with long lectures but it was a required course for me. You'll do great if you review slides from the lecture. It was a bit boring as I am not a history fanatic but definitely taught me a lot. Professor does assign short essay papers but gives enough time to complete them.
Professor Karapin was extremely knowledgeable and very understanding. I learned a lot in his class. Get ready to read and be ready for discussions. He assigned 8 short papers (about 450 words) throughout this course and I recommend finishing them early to give you some time during the later semester to focus on the big paper. Would take again.
Great professor! Very knowledgeable and organized! Just do the work and you will be fine.
He is very sweet and understanding. You had to complete 8 papers out of 17, creating flexibility. There were 2 presentations under 7 minutes and a final policy memo consisting of 8 pages. you are allowed 2 absences with no penalty. The only caveat is that he does not let the class go early. Very manageable class. Take him.
He has a stern side, stay clear of it, and you will be good.
Professor is nice and does his best to help his students. He has a sense of humor and occasionally cracks a joke. His lectures are coherent. He does his best to be as clear as possible with his expectations in the syllabus and assignment sheet. He also replies to emails regularly and quickly. Only downside is the course pack you have to buy for 50$
Professor Karapin is a very knowledgeable teacher who is very passionate about political science. The workload can be a little hefty in regards to the papers due but it is undoubtedly a wonderful class.
I really like him.
The professor is accurate, precise and experimented.
I think he's a good dude, just slightly vague about his grading rubric. You have to do a lot of reading in comparison to the amount of writing. If you're not prepared to do research, don't take the course. Make sure to ask questions about grading. Do not do anything to suggest that you're not paying attention, he will notice.
Prof. Karapin has a very clear grading criteria. If you follow the guidelines you will get a high grade. Everything is described very well and explained thoroughly. Total of 17 short paper assignments (he will grade highest 8), participation (attendance, reflecting on short paper), and final. I really enjoyed being in his class! great prof
assigned 4 short papers, 450 words each. not bad. if you want to do well read all of the required readings
Professor Karapin outlines instructions for each assignment very clearly on paper, but lectures are very lengthy and can drag. Follow the instructions and you'll get a good grade!
Prof. Karapin is a good professor. His class is fairly easy and his rubrics are clear. Follow the rubric and do the readings, even if you just skim them, and you will get a good grade. Its a very quiet and enjoyable class. Take if you have the opportunity.
Work was fairly easy. Complete 6 (400-word) papers (20 topics to choose from). His grading rubric is detailed, and this professor commits to the syllabus. The final is more of a group project, but you can opt-out & do it alone( a topic of your choice). He is an analytical thinker but dry in his teaching method.
Good Professor, really knows his stuff. Clear syllabus and grading criteria. Fairly easy paper assignments.
There are 6 short papers, a strategy memo, 2 presentations, and an outline of the strategy memo he likes it if you participate and engage in class as well as attendance matters if you wanna pass.
liked the class. think the amount of papers was fair and not overwhelming at all. presentations (2 total) were scary at first but he gives good feedback after it.
Fair amount of homework & Great lectures.
Professor Karapin assigns 6 short papers out of the 17 that are available, which counts for a good chunk of the grade. As long as you follow the rubric, the class should not be too difficult. As for the bigger projects, he is quite critical and a bit harsh in grading, but he does ensure the feedback is helpful. Super caring and respectful.
The protest movements class was pretty straightforward. The professor sets the expectations clearly in the syllabus and you know exactly what the workload looks like for the whole semester so it really helps you manage your time for other classes. There are no surprises.
P good proff. classes run a bit dull. but readings are engaging. Bit monotone lecture style but has clear expectations and was pretty flexible and ez to wrk w.
Professor Karapin is a very good professor and his class was fair, as well as interesting . There were 18 short papers, only six of which had to be done (one to two page long). There is a project for the final. I enjoyed the class and have no complaints.
Professor Karapin is a great professor. The class contains a lot of content about protest movements. He only graded at least 6 papers and a strategy memo. Attendance matters.
This class is full of short papers, outlines, and strategy memos. But wants you to participate and engage in the class. Also grades very harshly and gives a minimal explanation on how to do the final assignment correctly.
Overall a good professor and a nice person. The class is six short papers, two presentations, and a final strategy memo. It's not too bad as long as you get your work done. Hardest part was understanding what he expected from the strategy memos.
there's just right the number of papers. most of the grade comes from final presentations and short papers. the class wasn't hard but needed effort on presentation. he's not a tough grader, as long as you do your work, you will get a good grade. I will like to take his class again in the future if needed.
the final basically had 3 parts,an outline paper, a presentation and then the strategy memo paper which is 7-10 pages. First part of class was good as he graded short papers fairly but instructions for the final were not that clear. He was too harsh with grading the three parts, I also don't think the material we covered helped with the final paper
Professor is very friendly and likeable but is also ready to shut you down and be brutally honest regarding questions or feedback on assignments. Participation is a large part of your grade. Overall was a very enjoyable professor to work with and I would definitely take another class with him.
Great professor. 6 short papers, a news presentation, a final project with an outline, presentation and paper with the option of doing it as a group. It requires some effort but it isn't bad, as long as you do the work you'll be fine.
This class is really good and really informative. Professor Karapin delivers information in a really good way, not too much lecturing and is engaging. This class is writing heavy, and be ready to read in order to complete the short papers(6 of them), and final paper and presentation. Grading criteria is clear, just show up and work, and youre set.
The final basically had 3 parts: outline paper, a presentation and a final paper which is like 8 pages. First part of class is good as he grades short papers (6) fairly but instructions for the final were not that clear. The final is worth half of your grade so be prepared and ask a lot of question on what is required. Overall, nice professor.
As long as you do the readings and complete the required number of papers, you'll be able to enjoy the lecture and participate. The news presentation and the other 3 required assignments for the final (outline, presentation, and paper) were also doable. He is a pretty understanding person, just make sure to let him know if anything happens.
Loved this class, such an interesting and important topic. Six short papers, outline for final paper, presentation, final paper. Very easy grader at least in my experience as long as you follow the Chicago citation format.
Professor Karapin is an awesome Professor. He is very respectful and knows how to criticize students work without doing it a way that makes you feel stupid. The class doesn't have an enormous load of work and the information learned in the class is interesting.
Great professor! Always ask for feedback on your work and you'll improve in no time.
Second time taking Prof. Karapin. His course is clear and interesting. Highly recommend taking him he puts out all the work at the beginning in class and holds workshops for the final paper. 10/10
He is a great professor. Maybe the data he provides might be a bit too information overload but still a great lecturer.
This class is a little heavy on the writing intensive side! Luckily you won't have to purchase any textbooks but BE READY TO READ. Offers many short papers but only six are mandatory. Very grade intensive on one major assignment and presentation towards the end of the semester. Prepare yourself :)
Karapin is very clear and thorough with what he expects from your work. The syllabus and rubrics he uses are very elaborate. This class is easy to stay on track with, very organized
Good lecturer. Workload was manageable but heavy emphasis on the final project so can be stressful towards end of the semester.
Karapin is a gem. Every class started with Karapin asking his students how they were during attendance. The readings weren't too difficult and the grading guidelines were concise, and he was always thorough with his feedback on relevant projects. Keep up with deadlines and participate, you should get a good grade.
Very nice guy, pretty simple class. Assigns 17 short papers but you only have to do 6, and then two presentations and a final letter. No exam. Easy coursework, but make sure your formatting is right.
Avoid if you're not a political science major. Not clear on what's required/needed on the rubric. When things are not added when it's not on the rubric, degrades students with feedback. Rushed presentations and prioritized the wrong things. Lectures are interpretation of graphs - lecture/attendance should be OPTIONAL. Would NOT recommend! Avoid!!!!
No clue why he has so many good reviews - lowkey misguided me to take him. Inconsiderate and not flexible whatsoever. Pretends to be nice and then comes after you. Not understanding either! Once he hates you for no reason, you'll be fighting for your life and for your grade. Good luck!!! Don't take, it'll be a nightmare - worst class EVER!
Good person, horrendous professor. Class wasn't engaging or fun, makes you fall asleep. Spend your time with another class and other stuff. Not worth it for Writing Intensive. Ruined my interest in political science and climate change - horrible!
There is a current events presentation, a policy proposal presentation and final paper. He is particular about approved topics, so email in advance. His feedback for presentations and paper critiques tends to be extremely rude and lacks clarity, contributing to an anxiety filled class. Honestly, I would not recommend taking this class.
Save yourself and run. Why would you do this to yourself by taking the class? Thought the class was going to be fun based on past reviews, but nah. Run. Take any other class than this frfr
The class itself is not too difficult, but Prof Karapin completely ruins it. He is smug, condescending, and is extremely particular with grading -- but vague with instructions. He takes off points for lateness but keeps the class over time consistently. Has us read outdated papers because he wrote them. Do not recommend at all. Beware.
If you want a rude professor, boring lectures, and lose your passion for fighting climate change take this class!
He shows a good range of videos to keep you interested. However, he can come off as very demanding and rude. We had a guest speaker today and he was putting pressure on students in the class to speak. You can see in his demeanor that he was irritated that not too many were speaking. It made me uncomfortable. I hope this attitude does not continue.
Great guy who make sure his students understand the material
Grades attendance is based on being on time or late and has a heavy emphasis on presentations. Gives a clear syllabus for every graded item, and as long as you follow that, you should get a good grade easily.
This class was easy you just have to make sure to keep up with the courseload. Other than actually doing the work expected of you just show up to class and you should get a good grade. The course was easy and the professor was nice. I took the course for the writing intensive requirement and I am glad I took this course.
This is my second semester with this professor. I personally think he is a good professor. He is caring and flexible. Attendance is MANDATORY! He only assign 6 short papers, 2 presentations, and a group final paper. He can be a bit strict with grading. I recommend this class to anyone who needs to finish their intensive writing section.
You're graded on 6 short paper responses, which are manageable; however, he has extremely high standards on what to expect. He is also a stickler for not leaving class during lectures, which is ridiculous since we are college students. His teaching style is better for freshmen not upperclassmen.
Knowledgeable and cares for his students. Provides nearly the entire semester to write 6 short papers (or more) for which only the highest 6 grades count. Grading is lenient for those, but tougher for the final grading is so keep that in mind. It is doable and presented in chunks making the coursework approachable. There are short presentations.
There's some short papers based on the readings. You'll be graded on the 6 highest scores (6 is min.), & you have to participate when you write a paper. There's a short presentation where you have to analyze 2 news items, kind of a mini version of the final project. Not a lot of work for a polisci course, engaging, and interesting.
If you are good at accepting criticism and feedback I would recommend Prof Karapin especially for this media and democracy course 21600. He is very particular about guidelines for just about any assignment: short papers, news item presentations, and final papers/outline. After taking him twice I'd recommend and say be prepared.
Very fair and friendly. Gives really good feedback on assignments.
I would retake this professor, he was accommodating and clear about what he wanted on the writing assignments and the final paper. Very organized.
Professor Karapin is a pretty chill professor. He doesn't require much. He takes attendance, requires 6 short papers (minimum) based on readings. The first slide item presentation is very simple. The final project is an essay + presentation. Overall, not a lot of work. You can finish the first 6 papers and focus on your other classes.
He's okay as a professor. Graded in based on 6 highest graded short papers (6 min), attendance, one short presentation, one long presentation and one research paper. Workload is pretty managable. But, other than that It is not a course that inspires learning to an extraordinary level.
Great professor! I would take his class again. He is a lenient grader as long as you follow the instructions on the syllabus. His grading criteria and group project requirements are clear and super organized which makes life so much easier. The class is interesting and he shows a lot of videos. 6 short papers,1 news presentation(CR),1 group project
Participation in this class matters, but the coursework isn't too difficult.
Professor Karapin is very knowledgeable and is organized with the course content. The class can be very engaging if you are willing to participate and do the readings.
He gives 6 450 word papers based on two or three readings each, a final paper with an outline portion and presentation portion. Very clear guidelines on what needs to be in them and you have the option of working in a group.
Professor is super kind and well spoken. Grade is dependent on 4 short papers (which you decide when you want to do them), a midterm, attendance and the final. Both exams were non-cumulative and open note. He also gives curves when grading the exams!
Professor Karapin was really caring. Although he seems like a though grader, he provide clear guideline and grading prompt. Just show up regularly in the class and do all the assignment that he assign, you gonna be fine.
The professor is organized and provides clear guidelines. The workload is manageable, with 6 short papers, a presentation, and a final project. unstuckstudy ai is a helpful study tool alongside the readings. Overall, an engaging class if you're willing to participate.
Professor Karapin is caring and understanding. I have taken 2 classes with him and if I could take more with him I would. I highly recommend him. Every week a short paper is due but you only have to do 6 of them anytime you want. There are 2 presentation and a group final paper/ project. He has a very strict bathroom rule. ATTENDANCE MATTERS!
He is a good teacher, 16 short papers in total but only grades 4 of them, 2 presentations, 1 policy memo. Final and mid-term multiple choice. He was not too difficult and graded fairly but the mid term was hard to find out what exactly he wanted us to study for. The presentations were easy and the short papers were easy as well.
