He's very passionate about his work, can be annoying, but generally nice
Good teacher, presents and explains material very well

Very good professor. Thorough and helpful...great guy. Would love to take more classes with him if he taught more classes.
He is on of the best chemistry professors. Very helpful if you talk to him. He is not very hard. Study his notes and the book you will easily get an A.
very hard, just avoid him
You can tell that he likes to teach. The class is boring but he knows how to teach.
Good Guy. Good Teacher. makes his notes available online. will help you with any question you have. just go to lecture and recitation and study his notes and you'll do fine.
Hard. Though it might just be the subject.
rough around the edges, but very nice overall; he knows his stuff and he won't tolerate any crap in the classroom (no talking, cel phones) The kind of professor you respect not b/c you have to, but b/c you want to. very intelligent and in control
Hmmmm. come to think about it, he is the easiest professor i have ever taken i mean with the exception if you do your work. Pay attention to his lecture & jokes & read book & do work you cna easily pull an A!
I loved him he is the best instructor I ever had. he made Chemistry so easy. Along with a wonderful sense of humor. He shold show the other chem instructor his teaching style.
he is crazy as in hyper. says jokes but only few are funny. mean when it comes to grades. he is a good teacher, as in he explains the stuff. study hard and do homework, cause the class is not easy.take chaffee, or schlegel instead.
I think he is funny and knows the stuff, but I don't think he is able to make student understand the stuff..
Lalancette is awesome. One of the best chemistry professors at RU-N. He makes the class fun. Most of that stuff is learned in Gen Chem II, so it's like a review. Easy if you keep up with your work. The labs are self-paced, not like Gen Chem.
best professor ever.
He is very good professor. he is very helpful. He makes the class fun by joking aroud and telling the students about his stories. He makes chemistry easy for the students to understand. His exams are fairly easy and he makes it easier by making the students having a half page cheat sheet.overall, good professor to take gen chem II with.
Good guy..fun as a teacher too. But i thought his exams were nerve wreching..but the final was a piece of cake and he definitely curved. i deserved a C+ Based on numbers and he gave me a B+. AWESOME!!. he is quirky too...but i thought he was cool.i did stop going after a while tho...its much easier to study chem on your own and go to recitations.
The best prof i have ever had, def a pleasure to be in his class.
He is a great teacher, very helpful. Exams have no surprises if you take notes and understand the material. For Exp. Analytical, the exams are based on the lab calculations and the calculations he goes through during class. So be sure to attend. GenChem is not too hard either. And he is always willing to help.
He is TOUGH!!! Don't listen to crap such as the "easiest professor".The CHEAT SHEET that he allows us to keep doesn't help one bit. Dr.Schlegel was so much better and easier than this guy...
Okay, i dont know what that person was talking about, but prof. lalancette is much better than prof. schlegel.he is open with the class rather than being one of those boring teachers who just talks without even looking at the students. He definitely gets my attention in class, which is a good thing.Overall, i think that he is a very good professor.
I hate him!
just as a precaution: when a teacher allows you to make a cheat cheat for an exam, it doesn't mean he's a nice guy, it means the exam is hard and he's letting you make the stupid sheet so you don't come complaining to him later about the exam's difficulty. I did, and he told me the info came from the book and should've been on my cheat cheat. jerk!
Prof lalancette is one of the best chemistry professors out there.. i am so glad he is here at rutgers. i mean, i wanted to be a chem major, but i wasnt sure, and after chem 116, i knew that i was going to be a chemistry major. he really teaches well and is very fair. he is quite funny too, he really keeps your attention!
HE'S AN AMAZING PROFESSOR.. HIS EXAMS ARE TRICKY THOUGH.
he is a good prof keeps class interesting muchhh better than schlegel got 4 exams 2 chapts each really helpful drops lowest exam grade really tries to teach u
He's a very nice guy, keeps class interesting and you really get stuff when he explains it. His exams, though, aren't easy. He tends to give tricky questions at time. Sometimes you feel like you did really good on the exam and when you get like C. He is good, but not an easy professor.
If you get a chance to take Chem with Lalancette, do it. The exams were fairly easy as compared to Shlegel's. His way of presenting the material also helps to not make you fall asleep... as much. If you go to class, pay attention, and do the online homework atleast a B is definitely feasible for this class.
Lalancette is a much better teacher than Shlegel(experience). Although his jokes aren't really funny they definitely create a more upbeat atmosphere that helps keep you focused on what he's saying instead of drifting off. If you go to class and do the homework, exams shouldn't be too hard. Do all the online homework and a B is definitely possible.
Great Prof
He is a very good teacher although his exams are a little hard you can get a good grade in the class if you study hard. this is not a class for someone lazy, it is a lot of work.
Excellent Prof!! Took Chem 2 other times with different prof's and he was the best! Gives clear instruction on how to solve problems. Makes class interesting and fun. (as fun as chem can be) Definately recommend taking him!
he is one of the best anf funniest chem prof i have ever been tuaght by....his exams are striahgt forward and only from his notes...easy to get a B
i love lalancette! He's so smart it's scary. He really knows his chemistry and he's very good at explaining it. If you think he's hard then i don't know why you're taking chemistry in the first place because he's as good as it gets. Chaffee may be easier but you come out of her class with nothing and you in lalanette's class you will actually learn
I had him for Chem 1 and for recitation for Chem 2. Great professor! He explains things in such a way that you can understand (if you have 1/2 a brain). If you're interested in chemistry, I HIGHLY recommend taking him. His exams can be a little tricky, but if you attend class and keep up with the work, you will get no less than a B, if not an A
avoid. doesn't curve grades. wrong answers are in the choices. sure chaffee might be a scatter brain but she gives her students old tests w/ans to study for. hence easy b in her class.
Brillant guy. His teaching methods are crystal clear. And personally, I think you're better off with Lalancette rather than Chaffee, even if he doesn't curve. Even if you're stuck with another professor, go to Lalancette's lectures, because he can really teach the material, even if you're writing page after page in notes. Excellent professor.
lalancette is an awesome professor for Generl Chemistry I. His exams are difficult to do, but he does allow a half a page of cheat sheet (front and back) to use on the exam... His grading:: he DOES CURVE but tells u he doesnt.... Dont worry ull be fine in his class.. TAKE HIMMM!!!!! Awesome prof and very funny
His class is easy, I just wish i wasent lazy and showed up to class lol. He lets you use your own cheat sheet, and his exam questions are straight forward no stupid tricks like they do at new brunswick. If you miss something in class, ask to review it in reccitation. Make sure you do the ARIS hw, its a valuable chunk of your grade.
GREAT professor. He can make anybody understand chemistry and there are no such things as dumb questions. He is a very nice person and funny (sometimes). Considering being Chem he makes the class interesting. His exams are a bit tough but thats only cause its chem. Book is very helpful. Overall a great professor and a great person.
oops wanted to give him a 5/5 for helpfulness not a 1/5 like I did below.
he taught us for two classes when sheridan was out n he was great! he makes u think...unlike sheridan who just the problm on board.. i really liked he makes u analyze that helps learning wish i had him for my recitation...but no regrets got A!@!@
Amazing teacher! Had a great time in his class, explains everything very well. Knows a lot of the students somehow. Pay attention and skim the textbook and you will be fine.
one of the BEST professor ever...he is so easy to understand...makes chemistry an EASY GAME (as he says)...highly recomended..sometimes he is funny..his tests are from his notes and are not tricky..take him if you want to learn chemistry
This professor is the best professor Rutgers has. He takes Chemistry and makes it fun. He makes you understand the concepts and prepares you for his exams. Do the homework, if you dont understand his door is always open. communicate with him and you will do great in his class. I had him for Analytical chem, wish i had for all chem classes.
Really nice professor. Explains things well. His exams are mostly based on his notes and on the homework. Try not to do stupid mistakes on exams because each question is worth 5-6points. Write everything you can on your cheat sheet. He gets tricky in some questions. KNOW the theory too because he asks questions about that.Overall, not bad at all!
This was the worst chemistry teacher i ever had. All he does is run through problems without explaining them. Going to him is pointless because he just laughs at you. His exams are difficult and extremely tricky. Even though Sheridan is supposedly harder, i recommend him over lalancette any day because you will at least learn something there.
Great professor. Long as you do the h.w. problems and understand the problems that he does in class an A is possible. i highly reccomend taking this professor.
Awesome prof much much better than Chaffee. He knows what he is doing and his teaching method is really good. It's an easy A if u follow up lecs and do h.w. problems.
AMAZING Lecturer, I actually enjoyed going to his class. Exams are not tricky at all. If you review for even an hour each day you take the class just to make sure all everything is being retained, an A is beyond achievable. Wouldn't have taken Chem 116 with any other professor. Made chemistry an "easy game" for me.
HEADS UP TO EVERYBODY!! Take Lalacentte for this class BUT THINGS HAVE CHANGED... Now there is one exam given to all students an the exam is written by all professors that teach the class... PRETTY HARD! So don't think it will be as in the past...."an easy game"
He is awsome~
Very Easy Class. Piece of Cake.
HE IS THE MAN....EVEN IF YOU HATE CHEMISTRY YOU NEVER GET BORED OF HIS LECTURES..HE MAKES CLASS VERY EASY AND FUN...HE MAKES FUNNY NOISE B/W LECTURE WHICH IS HILARIOUS..HIS EXAMS ARE EASY AND STRAIGHT FROM THE NOTES....YOU WILL ACTUALLY LEARN CHEMISTRY IN HIS CLASS ...TAKE HIM.!!!!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED..!!!!!!!!
he makes chem class "EASY GAME" ..really reallly good prof..explains really well..u just cant get bored in his lecture even if you have chem..exams are straight frm his notes, pay attention in the class and you'll def get A. him and chaffee are the best chem prof in RU.. he makes funny noises in lecture...
He is awesome, i tell everyone to take him. his exams are straight forward and he lets you have cheat sheets on every exam. he makes lecture so much funny..it is really an "easy game"
Best professor at RU
Go to class and take good notes. For exams, do the recommended hw problems and reread the notes he puts up online. Doing this will guarantee you an 80 on the exam. You take 3 exams and he drops the lowest. Can this class be any easier? C'mon now...
go to class, do the hw, go to recitation. he basically works with you so you can get an A. best professor ever!
EASY and fun!!
The best professor at RU! Love him. He made me love Chemistry!
TAKE HIM! hes smart and gives u many chances to get an A
Great professor, very easy to get an A. but make sure you go to recitation, I got a B+ in his course because i missed two quizzes in recitation.
Freakin Awesome!!! Listen to his lectures, do the homework and read the book, nothing more. He's also very interesting and makes lectures fun
This man is a solid professor. He's a bit tough on grading but overall, he's somewhat funny and he's helpful. Got a B+ in his class
God bless lalancette. Yes his exams are hard but you actually learn in his class, trust me,he made me love chemistry more than any subject and especially if you want to go into pharmacy, med school or anything like that he's the guy who will help you understand chemistry :) love him
He is an amazing professor. Be sure to study for his exams but he actually teaches you chemistry. I loved his class and enjoyed it so much even though it was not so easy. If you pay attention in class and review your notes well in addition to the ones he posts online, you should be fine. The textbook can be helpful too.
He's a very nice guy but his exams are super hard. Seriously. You would finish the exam confident thinking you passed and get back a bad grade.! It's tricky!! ={
ok, get the textbook, highlight the whole thing and understand it before class, and you will be fully prepared for his lecture! I swear he teaches it fantastically! just be ready!! I worked hard and got the A! He is really smart, good at teaching and there for you when u ! genchem 1 & 2 need time! if u practice the problems ALOT you will get the A
Exams are pretty tough but everything he teaches in lecture is on the exam. Can be tricky but try finding old exams and practice from them. they are very similar. Knows his stuff and seems passionate about chem! hard but great professor ! Connect hw is annoying but helps ur grade!
if you dont pull five all nighters in a row, you won't pass. very hard class unless you're good in chemistry. be prepared, he will take you on a trip of your lifetime. sweet professor, but exams are crazy tricky.
His class is very interesting, its even better when he teaches his own recitation. You have to study big time, and do not miss recitation! If you miss a lecture its not the end of the world, but just by showing up it helps. Connect and Learn smart are two things that are required, so youre better off buying the online access code. Book isn't needed
I got an A without ever reading the chapter and it's not because I'm a genius - it's because Dr. L is the best lecturer ever. He makes the material understandable and his tests are totally fair because they are based off lecturers and practice problems he assigns in the text! You just need to watch out for conversions, that's why tests are 'tough'
Just focus in lecture. Follow what he's saying and don't lose track. He goes fast. Study lecture notes for the exams.
Good professor. Recommend taking him. Do your work/homework/study, you can get an A.
As long as you study, you should be just fine. Attendance isn't mandatory & he curves at the end. Also, I personally didn't really need the textbook. Just get the online access code.
This professor can never make up his mind if he is teaching the right stuff. This professor makes mistakes on the tests. Don't take him.
One of the better lecturers in the Chem dept. Had him for Gen Chem 1 too, but I did not like him as much in a large lecture environment. With smaller classes, he really takes his time to make sure you understand the material, though analytical chemistry in general is basically a repeat of Gen Chem 2 in greater detail. Funny. Invades personal space.
He goes WAY too fast when teaching new concepts and equations. Worst yet, he writes in cursive; Its hard to even tell what he wrote on the board sometimes. He gives 3 exams and drops the lowest exam grade. Lots of learnsmart & connect hw, keep track of those! Final IS cumulative, so do well on the 1st exam! Decent prof but I didnt like his teaching
Lectures are interesting and easy to follow. It's not hard to get an A in this class at all, all you have to do is study and do the homework. There are 3 exams and he drops the lowest one so do good on the first two. If you are already good at chem, this class will not be bad at all, but even if you are not, you'll be fine.
A very passionate & knowledgable professor who can clearly explain new concepts. His exams are based on Learn Smart and Lecture. No surprises but you need to study. 3 exams and a final. One exam dropped. Other than that there isnt much more work to put in besides LearnSmart. No regrets from takin this class.
A good professor but he tends to go way too fast during the lectures. If you get As on the midterms and quizzes he exempts you from taking the final; wish he told us that in the beginning but no one knew thats possible till the end. Its important to stay on top of everything bc it all builds up. Will use EVERYTHING thats taught on all exams.
im in love with roger lalancette. his dashing good looks dont compare to his vast knowledge oh mami
Great lectures, he breaks every problem down to make them easier. He drops one of the three exams and curves the overall final grade of the course. A 75 is a B.
I had Dr L for Chem 1 and 2: - He is engaging and challenges students to think critically. - His HW assignments help reinforce the material (and some ques appear on the exams). -One can earn 200 points (out of 500 needed for an A) by doing HW and quizzes. Lowest exam grade is dropped. -Find a good recitation instructor when registering.
This was one of the best classes I took during my freshmen year of college! Attending lectures is the key to doing well in this course. Dr. L explains the concept and supplements it with sample problems. For a 4-credit course, it is paced wonderfully.
Ya'll he didn't even post up the grades yet, idk how you guys are already commenting. Either you did sooo well the entire semster that you are confident in your grades, or you guys are trying to throw some people off their game lmao! Either way, if you study well, you will do great, if you don't you won't. His exams are straight from the online hw.
If you're willing to study a lot and put in the effort than you will get an A. It's really not an easy class at all, but doing the connect helped me a lot and he makes his exams from it (sometimes). Go to learning center too if you're having trouble don't wait last minute cause he goes fast... Overall, one of my favorite professors!!
I am SHOCKED!! I should have dropped this class the moment he said: good afternoon class... Don't get me wrong, he's nice. He explains everything so you could understand the topic, but he doesn't give study guides and barely reviews before the tests. His exams have options of A,B,C,D,E,F,G. and H. You have no chance of guessing.
Overall a great and educated professor, but you have to be willing to put in the work to do well in his class. the material isn't easy and you won't understand it leaving lecture. You have to take time out of your day to review what was covered in class and study A LOT to do well on his exams. The only thing I hated was he never replied to emails!
he posts some lecture notes online but in class he goes really really fast. also i find him to be a bit condescending with this comments during lecture. connect and the learnsmart def help boost your grade a bit. exams were honestly decent. you can pass with an ok grade if u study and make sure to do the recommended problems. overall an ok class.
Hes a great professor. Only tests you on whats covered in class. Goes a little quickly in class, but just pay attention, do the homework, and ask questions (especially in recitation), and you should be okay. Youre gonna have to work for it. Also, his exams tend to get pretty complicated because the questions arent always very straight forward.
Roger is clearly smart & even really funny, but his teaching style is not "all inclusive". He goes too fast and doesn't really go into details, his lectures feel more like a review than an actual lecture. Be prepared to teach yourself. He also does not provide test reviews or PP which makes everything even more complicated. HARD class overall.
Go to every lecture. Make sure you understand everything the first time and you should get an easy B+ to A range. I can understand why people think the class is hard but... not really. Literally just study and make sure you understand everything.
I hadHim for general chemist. He's a terrible teacher. Take him and you will end up stressing yourself out to the Max. He teaches as if you already know the material. He didnt explain properly and hes all over the place. No study guides for the exams so you skinny know what to study. I regret taking him. Take at your own risk.
The "Go to every lecture. Make sure you understand everything the first time and you should get an easy B+ to A range." Is mine. I got an A in the class. Like I said the class is an easy A if you respect the course and put your mind to it. It's a 4+1(lab) credit chemistry course after all.
I have Lalancette for chem 116 and I love him. Those of you who say that his lectures are fast and hard to follow, well chemistry is a hard subject. You can't compare chemistry with English right? His explanation is clear and he makes his lectures full of fun. I like his lectures. Though I do wish he can have a study guide before exams..
Dr. L. is the best chemistry professor in this department. He not only teaches you chemistry, but also inspire you to love chemistry. Anyone should be lucky to have his Gen Chem 1 and Gen chem 2.
He does not care about students. One person forgot her recitation section number on the exam and was told "good, you'll lose points for that". Him and Cote also give each other questions to see which ones students can take, but it depends on how long it takes THEM to finish a question. Lectures are just reviews, just watch videos on YT to pass.
you will struggle in this class, you will be expected to just figure it all out somehow. PLEASE AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
Professor Lalancette was a difficult professor to understand. I was an A student except for this course. His lectures are very disorganized, there are no PPTS or study guides. you're expected to study 3 hours after every lecture to keep up. Watching yt videos helped me towards the end of sem but not enough :(
Lectures are essentially helpless. You do need to learn about 90% of the material yourself outside of classes. Recitation does help a lot. He does not give out any slides or resources to help study except old exams which do help. Take quizzes seriously and you can do fine.
If you want to take this professor get ready to study your chapters by yourself. Taking his class is like studying on your own. You won't learn from his classes cuz he expects you know it already. He is sometimes very fast at discussing. However, recitation class is helpful I only learn in that class and the quizzes. Lalancette tests are hard.
DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS. Dr. Lalancette was a difficult professor who would fly past material in class as though you already knew it. He doesn't give study guides for exams, so it's hard to know what to study. He does give bonus points (5) on his exams so that helps. Overall, I wouldn't recommend people to take his class (coming from an A student).
Attendance not mandatory, throws out lowest test grade, but tests are HARD. Expects you to come to class already knowing the material. Lots of math and confusing word problems. If there is no teacher listed when you sign up for chem, chances are they left the name off so students won't drop the class. Take any other professor if you can.
He's a good professor. Assignments weekly, and his exams are pretty hard but his notes do help.
I honestly wouldn't take this professor his exams are extremely hard and although he gives out past exams for us to study it doesn't really help. The final exam was HORRIBLE and impossible to understand. If you're ready to study 10 hours or more each week then take it but it's not worth it.
I only passed the class by using outside resources. If youre required to take the class with him I highly recommend focusing on the recitation slides, using Penji and primarily and resources you can find that truly makes you understand chemistry. His lectures were unhelpful for me but might be different for you. You will have to put a lot of work.
Professor L can be hit-or-miss, but going to class, reading the textbook, and using resources like Unstuck AI helped me pull through. Definitely a challenge, but doable with dedication.
Not going to lie, he's a kind professor who wouldn't mind answering your questions if you need help. BUT he doesntt know how to teach, he doesn't have plan and is unorganized. I found that I learned more from recitation that the actual prof. His tests are not that hard, and although he says otherwise, the study guides are very similar to the exams
Copies a lot of material from past exams/study guides onto the next exams. Might sometimes fly past material if he just... feels like it. Has some interesting sound effects and stories to tell mid-lecture. Other than that, he's pretty solid.
don't take him. its a hard class, and he doesn't do curves and his lectures are more of a review than teaching, his notes are also really useless. he does give practice exams before the exam but you need more practice than that, its just better to avoid his class in general.
Doesn't use slideshows in lecture. He uses chalk instead. Very old fashioned.
Very lecture-heavy, three midterms, one final, the lowest midterm dropped. recitqation has quizes every week(3 lowest dropped). He's not an amazing lecturer, and you can very well not go to class every day and still do fine in the class.
I do not know what to say about this class the only thing i can say if u can't teach yourself then do not take him because he does not teach and even if u go to his lecture you are not gonna understand anything and you will leave right away.
i read some of the more recent reviews and they just aren't accurate. i didnt need to open the textbook a single time because it really was, that easy. yes you need to teach yourself a bit, but he DOES actually teach, and does it quite well imo. overall he's the goat and he's lenient and he's really not that difficult, just pay attention in class..
the lectures are subpar, so if that's important to you don't take this class. you could very much get away with only going to recitation and learning everything from there. if you put in a little bit of effort outside of lecture the course is really easy and the tests are not very hard. the final is very forgiving to your grade as well
