He is very enthusiastic about the work he does and the topics he studies. Overall one of the best classes I have ever taken!
History of Rock and Roll- Over enthusiastic, gives attendance quizzes on Fridays, you can get a "B" by looking at the book while you're taking the quiz online without going to class. TA's were useless and rude.
Really easy class if you go almost everyday. online tests and quizzes. use the book a lot.
Everything is online so it's probably one of the easiest A's you'll ever get. Definitely recommend this class to everyone trying to fulfill their Arts core credit.
Love that all the quizzes and tests are online. Lots of reading but I made tabs for all the bolded titles and would look up anything that wasn't obvious. Class is pretty interesting and he's a nice guy. If you have questions, definitley go to TA's. Popquizzes are completion grades. I would recommend taking it.
Do not take this course for a Summer class-very fast paced, and instructor gives very short answers to your questions. Might be okay for a Spring or Fall semester, but definitely not a Summer!
(Took ONLINE) I was VERY dissappointed in how much reading there was in this course. We had a THICK book that we read/tested out of and another book with articals to read. Quizzes did not correspond with powerpoints, yet they were straight out of the books. Still a hard test even with the book. I got an A, but had to bust my tail for it. Old rock
He's very into music and demonstrates a lot of knowledge on the subjects. Although, this course requires a lot more reading than I expected. Go to class so you can take pop quizzes. tests and quizzes are online.
I completely forgot to take a listening exam and still got a B. Buying the Shazam app will get you a 95+ easily on the listening exams. There is a lot of reading. I just googled most of the questions and usually would get the answer. Go to class for the pop quizes. They are a completion grade.
Responds to e-mails promptly. Go to class. He gives pop quizzes as attendance. Tests are online. Listening quizzes can be shazzam'd. Reading quizzes are hard. you actually have to read. He's very knowledgeable. He gives you a lot of chances to improve your grade. I recommend this class.
good/okay professor but he is super strict about his rules which gets annoying. The textbooks are WAY overpriced and the reading requirements are ridiculous - not to mention the reading quizzes are very hard. Overall the class is harder than it should be. Go to class. Thought it would be an easy A, a GPA boosting clas... not so much. I got a B.
The professor loves music and is very enthusiastic, when you can reach him. Oddly, he has a no university email contact policy. The video lectures, and listening modules, are pretty cool.
Great class very easy! Online classes taught by Rob Vela, both very good professors.
He was very enthusiastic about his class and very serious too. You must show up for class, it is apart of your grade, but you are given a few passes on attendance. Everything is online, the only thing the class is for is for the final and the extra credit supplemental exam (VERY HELPFUL to your grade) at the end of the semester.
Extremely easy. Just read the books and all the tests and quizzes are online. You will probably have to show up every day because he takes attendance. Even if you don't have an A, which is nearly impossible, there's an extra credit test at the end that will add lots of points to your grade.
Annoying attendance policy that is enforced strictly. Otherwise good class.
Its a really big class that you must attend. He keeps attendance by Tophat which you have to buy for $20. I came into this class expecting it to be about Rock and Roll music, over half the semester was over Jazz and African music.
Take it online if you can. Doesn't say the words "Rock" or "roll" until about 2 months in. You HAVE to go to class for the participation quiz but get a group and take turns showing up group texting the codes. HE FREAKS OUT about phones and doesnt seem to get that him stopping the lecture to lecture us on the syllabus policy is a bigger nuisance.
I would recommend not to take this class with heavy load courses (like POLS 1301 online). There is so much reading and the reading quizzes ask very specific questions that even from reading you could probably miss. Lectures are not that bad, and he can be funny.
This class really disappointed me. The lectures seem unnecessary, the majority of which you watch documentaries and learn very little. Almost every thing you are tested on is reading and listening outside of class that doesn't pertain to the lectures at all. He is very serious about attendance which is taken via top hat daily.
He makes it kind of hard to skip class because of the daily quizzes and attendance, he isn't afraid to call you out if you are on your phone (he does it a lot) and he expects you to read a lot but it isn't really necessary to do well.
This class was extremely disappointing because of the professor. He has a monotone voice and does not try to make the content interesting whatsoever. I would NOT take this class again.
Top Hat messes up and it counts against you
Attendance is absolutely necessary. For every absence after the third he deducts 3.33% off your total grade. The required reading for this class is absolutely egregious, expect to read several hundred text book pages and be tested over minute details covered in the books.
Unless you just love music, I would not suggest taking this course for a creative arts credit. Attendance is mandatory and there is a strict no cell phone or laptop policy. Most of class is spent reviewing the previous class or going over policies from the syllabus.
I would not suggest taking this course for a creative arts credit. Attendance is mandatory and there is a strict no cell phone or laptop policy. Most of class is spent reviewing the previous class or going over policies from the syllabus. Also be prepared to take lots of quizzes/exams. However, these are all online and relatively easy.
He cares about attendance an incredible amount, sometimes it's a bit too much. His lectures are clear cut and he's passionate about his subject. My only complaint is that his tests are very very tough and contain a ton of material. If you slack off even a bit on your work, it's super punishing. Follow his rules, take good notes, and read read read.
He expects you to read so much for every class. He could make the class so interesting and fun but instead makes everyone dread it.
I would NOT take this class, lectures are so long and boring. You can not use your phones in class or you will get kicked out. If you miss 3 classes your grade drops a letter.
Do not take this class, if you do not read everything he assigns, which amounts to hundreds of pages by the end of the semester, on top of your other classes, then you will fail. The tests are over insignificant details and he harps endlessly on attendance, but the material is all based on outside material not seen once in his monotonous lectures
I dreaded this class every single day and attendance is mandatory (which he never stops mentioning). He jumps around during the lecture, making it very difficult to take good notes and what he teaches is rarely helpful on online quizzes and tests. SUPER strict about phones.
I took this class online over the summer and I loved it. I bought both books for the course and they weren't really needed. Just watch the video mods and you will do fine. It is a very interesting class if you like music. But one thing that was annoying is that sometimes the video didn't match up with the sound. But other than that great class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He enjoys making tests difficult and the TA's walk around like prison guards kicking people out for being on their phones. Attendance is mandatory, if you miss 3 classes, he takes off 1/3 of your grade.
Class is no longer online and requires a lot more work than you would expect.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
I really enjoyed the class, I learned a lot. Don't forget that this is a history class, there is a lot of reading! The reading sucks in all honesty. And he is strict with phones, although he didn't really enforce the "kick out rule" until about thanksgiving break. His class is a typical class. Not easy like every freshman seemed to expect.
Don't take this class! It's an easy A but you'll have to put in the work. Every reading quiz is about 200 pages of reading, and the listening for the listening exams will be about 6 hours of music. If you do both those things, you'll get an A but it takes lots of time. Lectures were not very interesting.
I paid $250 for books for this ELECTIVE. Landes talks himself in circles with his lectures and assigns outrageous amounts of homework for his quizzes and "Exams". He is a try-hard and arrogant. He stopped class and threatened to kick out a student because they were texting. DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE!
I am currently enrolled and it's flat out boring. His lectures are repetitive and end up just covering what is assigned in your homework. The readings take hours (don't do it the night before the reading quizzes because it will take you 3+ hours to complete) and the listening homework takes a long time too. Easy class just a lot of work to do.
He treats the class like a majors class and feeds you copious information that you don't need by going off huge tangents. You don't really need to know what he says in lecture, but you can't miss bc he takes attendance for the hundreds of us (assigned seating) with a grade penalty for absence, and if you do go, he often disrupts class for phone use
This is only an elective for most students. This class is taken as if it was a graduate class for music majors. And taking exams online, why is there a proctor watching me? Are you intentionally trying to fail us? We are just trying to pass. There is over 100 pages to read each week. The lectures aren't even him. It's someone else.
Literally stops a lecture class of close to 300 students because he saw 1 person in their phone and takes up to 10 minutes of a 50 min course to correct the person.
Lot's of reading. But it's newspaper articles about The Beatles so it's not that bad
Landes is by far one of the worst professors I have had in my Tech experience. I took him a couple years ago when he had his quizzes/tests online and now that they aren't, I can't IMAGINE how difficult it must be for these newer students. He does in fact treat this course as if it is your major and the TA's are the absolute worst. Don't take this!
If you are not a music major, this class may make you hate rock n roll. The lectures are intensely boring and make 50 minutes feel like 2 hours. Sure you get to watch and listen to some media in class (famous old songs), but it is all convoluted and over analyzed by the prof. He'll say he was in the music 'biz', but hey - those who cant do, teach.
Hardest class I took this semester. He takes this class way too seriously and gives way too much reading. All the tests in class are timed so you better know the info. There are also listening quizzes which aren't too bad but the info quizzes are hard. Good luck reading about 200 pages a week.
Professor Landes teaches his class well. His class is a lot of reading and listening, but it is manageable. Students give him a hard time because he is tough. However, this is college not high school. I enjoyed this class and learned a lot from it. I finished with an A+. Go to class, put in effort, and be respectful. You will be just fine.
HEAVY reading, however, I did not read that much and I still thought the quizzes were easy. Lots of power points. Lots of quizzes. Easy A, though. He seems a little difficult and never seems to believe he is wrong, even though you can PROVE that he is wrong. Always seems very grumpy.
The quizzes are very hard and specific, I recommend taking this in person. Every quiz and test is proctored and it makes it very hard to concentrate.
Quizzes are hard and he is very unhelpful and unavailable. Heavy reading and listening time required. Wish I hadn't taken this course
Horrible Professor. Rude every chance he can be. Assigns an insane amount of work, and even if you do all of the work it doesn't guarantee that you'll PASS at all. So many of my classmates dropped within a week. Don't buy his stupid eText that he "requires". Just by a cheaper physical copy. If you take this class, get ready to work.
This professor must think his class is the most important class out there! Proctored tests and the quizzes are just ridiculous. He is no help and very rude. I have never had a class I hated but this one I really do in my few years of college. I chose this because it seemed like a fun class to get my 3 core credits. Big mistake. He is horrible!
Made this account to tell you. DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE. It is unreasonably difficult for people just taking it as an elective. Save yourself the money and prevent extra gray hairs and tears by staying away from this class at all costs.
The way he has the class set up on Blackboard is pretty confusing. He seems like a very disorganized person.
Dont take this class! Insane amount of work for an elective. Hundreds of pages of reading and for the listening exams you have to listen to about 6 hours of music. His test are extremely specific questions. All i got to say is good luck if you take it. He is very rude and gets very off topic and doesnt allow computers or phones
About 400 people in the lecture, so lets drop everything and call out the people on their phones. Laptops and phones are banned after your first warning, so welcome back to high school. Besides that the professor gives a lot of work for an elective class. I love when class is cancelled and the only warning is a blackboard post the night before.
Dont take this class unless youre into doing a bunch of extra reading & listening outside of class. The test are pretty straight forward if you actually put in the extra work he requires, if not good luck passing. Not an easy elective.
I took this class because I absolutely love music! But he made me dislike it. Countless hours of reading and listening to music thats not even good. Tests are hard. Assigned seating with over 400 students in the lecture. Rude professor and TAs as well. Dysfunctional grading policy and no phones, computers, earbuds, tablets allowed, no excuses. :/
Well kids if you signed up for this class I am so very sorry, First of Landes is a dumb libtard, Second he's the rudest professor I have ever had and I'm a junior, Third he's so petty he will stop a class of 400 people to call out a student on their phone. Finally he treats everyone like theyre in Pre K and makes his class harder than it has to be.
This guy is such a creep. In class he is always staring at girls instead of teaching, and I am pretty sure he is not allowed with in 300 feet of a school
You havee 32 seconds per question on the final and you can not go back and answer it. Take this class online, this professor smoked waaaaaay too much weed and his ego is bigger than donald trumps. Cal 3 was easier. I REPEAT DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IN PERSON, ONLY ONLINE.
This class is way harder than it should be, i have to read and study for this class more than any of my classes that are actually in my major. I literally have to read every single day to keep up with everything. Tech needs to get rid of this course or restructure it with a new professor. Getting an A in A&P is easier than getting a B in this class
Hes horrible
Show up to class and listen to the guy. It can be very boring but all quizzes and tests are open note making it easy to do well on them. Missing more than 3 classes will result in a grade deduction though, so if you don't want to go to class then don't take this class.
Very lecture heavy, lets you use notes on the exams but they aren't very helpful because the questions are conceptual whereas notes are factual, more work assigned than in any other class, final exam is 50% of your grade so if you mess that up you're screwed, absolutely do not recommend
Way too hard for a class that is not even major specific
The worst professor in existence.
This guy is awful. Stay away if you think it will be easy elective. Would not recommend to my worst enemy.
If you love long reading, extremely hard tests, pop quizzes, and a professor who hates teaching then this class if for you. We are sure you'll love it! If not too bad. Landes absolutely hates to teach, he assigns 200+ passes a week of readings and the reading exams are over small details. Listening quizzes are easy, In class exams are hard enjoy
If you're prone to skip class, you will fail this class. After 3 absences your grade drops by half a letter grade. Strict no phone policy and they will call you out and try and embarrass you. Prof will take any chance to brag about himself he can get. Wouldn't take again if you paid me. Don't take this class, idc how much you love classic rock.
Acts like the class is more important than any core class. 1/3 a letter grade off for missing even 1 class. Throws huge fit about phones and laptops even if its just a ringer as if he is a middle school teacher. Has an awful goatee that he needs to shave.
took this my first semester of college, bad idea. This was a HUGE class and he would call out one person on their phone and lecture them. one time someone got up to leave early and he stopped class to say, "where are you going" the person had to explain in front of 3-400 people WHERE they were going. not worth it even for music lovers.
Dont ever take his class. This was harder than my nursing classes, pointless elective that will only bring down your gpa. And I actually love rock n roll but I would never wish this class on my worst enemy. Wanna spend a week reading 25 chapters?
Took this class in the summer online to fulfill my art elective that has nothing to do with my degree or career. There was so much content, theres no way anybody could learn or memorize all of that. Ive held a 4.0 until this class. Very unrealistic and not worth it. Definitely not an easy A for a pointless elective.
He was terrible and graded unfairly. Times tests didnt even give you enough time to answer a question within 20 seconds.
Ive taken many college classes and this is by far the hardest one Ive taken. He treats this class like its a core curriculum. He is not understanding whatsoever. He assigns more than any other class I am currently enrolled in. I would never recommend his class.
I have been in this class for 8 weeks and he has given me 0s for everything possible then decides to email asking why my grade is so bad. Absolutely terrible.
Awful. Acts like this is a core class. I understand that this is college and every class is meant to be taken seriously, but he assigns more reading than classes that involve my major. The tests are hard and almost impossible to study for, 100 questions with 90 minutes to complete. Take History of Jazz instead.
He is a great professor and he really knows what he is talking about. I took this class for a creative art credit and he assigns more work than my core classes, which I find a little ridiculous considering this an elective and has nothing to do with my major. If anything it held me back from spending more time on my core classes.
Prof. Landes treats this art credit (which has nothing to do with most of our majors) like it's a core class. WAY too many assignments and tests. I recommend not taking this class.
There is a lot of work in this class, especially for it being an elective, but I promise that it is manageable. He really knows what he is talking about so as long as you put the work in, you should be fine.
Only class I've taken here I've had to drop. By the time the semester was almost over we had just gotten to like early rock, if you're actually trying to learn about rock and roll. Spend most of the class talking about the blues. On top of that it is remarkably difficult for a class that has no reason to be so difficult.
Yes, it is a lot of work, and yes there is a lot of reading, but it can EASILY be done if you manage your time. The lectures are dead interesting, the readings are also interesting (most of the time), and the information is clearly accessible and posted. Just do your work and stay on top of everything and you will learn A LOT of interesting info!
Ridiculous amount of rogue memorization which is useless (unless you are a music major). Stated discussions were not graded, then added them as a grade mid semester. Would not recommend as an elective at all, wait and take something else if you can.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASSES IF YOU ARE NOT A MUSIC MAJOR. Landes treats this class as if it's a major requirement. Took me 20 hours a week studying, was a 4.0 student until today. Massive amounts of reading, quizzes asking questions you almost certainly did not take notes on. CLASS IS DESIGNED TO FAIL YOU IF YOU CHOOSE IT THINKING IT WILL BE EASY.
He treats this class like it is for credit and not an elective. Theres a lot of quizzes/discussions but most of the grade is made out of exams, which are pretty tough.
I swear to God if I could get this man fired I would. First off, not understanding AT ALL. Had to take this during a young artists program away from home I would not wish this on my worst enemy. Im taking it online and its awful. Oh, and dont you dare ask for clarification lest you wish to have him make you feel like an idiot. Stop teaching!
I'm taking this class online during the summer while working 50+ hours a week. Don't do what I'm doing if you you care about your mental health. Lots of pointless note taking that doesn't help on mid term. After spending 20 hours studying for the mid term I got a 61, but D's get degrees I guess.
I cannot stand this professors class. If you have any other options for a creative arts credit do them because this class is not it.
I loved this course. Professor Landes was engaging and cares about the topic. It was fun for me each time In class just listening and learning more about music. I recommended all tech students to take this
Dr. Landes cares more about exerting his control and strict authority than the education of his students.
If you want to save money along with your mental health, don't take this class. He makes you buy 2 books for a creative arts credit and he makes the class way harder than it should be. The study guides he gives are awful the notes are useless during the quizzes/exams. Save your time and money and for the love of god don't take this terrible class.
Landes is not a good professor at all his lectures are just him rambling on and on about the same thing and the exams dont always match up. Its insanely boring for a class that sounds really fun. Dont take this class
Thought this would be a blow-off class given the name and it being a creative arts class but I was very wrong. His lectures are long and boring and if you want to pass the class you must study and remember nearly everything he says. The exams are excessively long and have a very short time requirement given you need 15+ pages of notes for his exams
I took MUHL 2310 as a creative arts credit, thinking it would be interesting and somewhat easy. I was dead wrong. This class was one of my hardest for no apparent reason. I have talked to some of my classmates and many of them agree that this class it super time-consuming and incredibly challenging. I absolutely do not recommend this class!
Take an easier art credit and avoid this class. Lectures are dry and boring and the tests are very difficult.
The exam material comes straight from lecture notes and PowerPoints. It's a lot of work, but the content is not difficult. If you're looking for an easy class that isn't time consuming, this is definitely not for you. But if you're willing to put in the work and can follow deadlines, you will be fine! Also don't buy the textbooks, you can pass w/o.
Great professor! honestly my favorite class last semester. this class is so interesting and honestly a cakewalk if you have basic music knowledge. If you dont have basic music knowledge, dont be discouraged, he does a great job of highlighting what you need to know for tests/quizzes.
First of all, this class should be called history of CLASSIC rock. Dr Landes is also very anti technology and refuses to use email. Most test material done outside of class while lectures hit the high points. Do not take this class thinking it will be an easy CA credit, I had more work and dedicated more time in here than to any of my other classes
I am not being hyperbolic, Landes is the worst professor I've ever had. He recycles already recorded lectures and assigns so much reading that you'd think he's teaching something that is actually important. His syllabus is disorganized, confusing, and half the due dates listed are from the previous semester. Pass on any class taught by him.
Avoid any class with Dr. Landes!!! His syllabus is long and confusing making the class hard to follow and understand. Missing any classes drops your grade to a place that is hard to come back from. His grading system is horrible and he values strictness over the education of his students. If you're looking for a fun class about rock, run away.
Dr. Landes values strictness over education. This course is not hard, just extremely frustrating and punishing if life gets in the way of class. Prepare to be thoroughly disappointed with the content of this course as it does not cover possibly the most explosive and interesting sounds in the genre of rock and roll.
Unless you really have a love for Rock and Roll, I would not take this class. It has too much work for what the class is supposed to be. I thoroughly enjoyed the lectures and the TA is hilarious. He made us buy two textbooks:/ There are a lot of different grades he takes which can be confusing at times to remember what is due.
Heavy Reading, watch a lot of videos Lots much info. Extra credit. Discussions. Reading/Listening exams, midterm, and final. Don't worry if you failed a midterm or missed a quiz. The final is meant to boost your average grade. Make a calendar to set reminder. Follows the syllabus, no make up. Will round your grade at final grade.
This class was ridiculous. Lecture heavy, online lectures, and an ungodly amount of reading. He did not give a damn about your personal life and if you were having issues trying to stay caught up. If an online test isn't working? Oh well! Lecture notes are years old and very disorganized. The lecture videos were recorded in 2020.
This professor has a great personality however, unless you have a deep love for rock and roll, I would not recommend taking his class. Two textbooks are required and you must read at least two chapters from EACH at least each week. Also, you must watch the lectures which are like 30-45 minutes long plus the listening modules. Good luck!
Take this class if you want to flunk out of college. He does not care about his classes at all and all absolutely screw you over. What he said was going to be on the midterm was almost completely different than what was actually on it.
Syllabus is messy and hard to read, sometimes wrong. He wants people to take is seriously, but this class sucks any joy out of studying rock and roll. I HAD a high GPA, defeating when lots of hours on reading/note taking and still don't do well. Don't take this class, if you are a good student you will feel like a failure.
I safely say that History of Rock 'n' Roll, Roger Landes' class, isn't worth it. Two textbooks are required that are not used in class, and there are hours of listening modules that you have to use to pass the exams. Furthermore, you are required to attend every lecture and no phones are allowed either, making the class very dreary and oppressive.
He SUCKS, especially his cross-eyed TA. I researched classes to take for next semester and they counted me absent for using my laptop for "its intended purpose" I'm surprised this class can still be taken. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I love music history and always have. This guy makes me wanna blow my brains out. His TA is a complete control freak.
I took this class as a creative arts credit hoping I would enjoy this class. I have always been a fan of older rock music and thought this class spoke to me. I was dead wrong, Professor Landes does not care about you or has any urge to help you if you are drowning in his class. The exams and quizzes are very rigorous, Be prepared to study a ton.
I was expecting this class to be a breeze for my arts credit. I have never learned anything with music and this class was told this class was for non music majors. He is a good professor, but I found myself always confused. Even when asking for help it was hard to get a clear response. I would get a grade with no explanation as to why it was low.
I would not ever recommend anyone to take this class. I thought I would love learning about Rock and Roll but he sucks all the fun out of it. Don't make the same mistake I did. Way too hard for what it should be. I'm in chemistry and calculus and my grade is lower in here!
This has to be the worst class at Texas Tech University. My advisor recommended this class and I wish that I never have taken it. The professor sucks all of the fun out of the class. He talks to students as if they are lower than he is when we literally pay his salary with our tuition. If you want to have a fun first semester, do not take it.
Roger Landes needs to be fired. He is by far the worst professor I have had at Tech. I would rather shoot myself than take History of Rock n Roll again. He is condescending towards students and tends to blow them off. His TA stalks people in class and talks to female students, which is so weird. These guys need to quit.
This class has too much work for a 1000 level non-major class. He expects all students to be able to handle the workload of a graduate musicology student and nobody cares that much. I have just found out I am going to fail this class and I am not going to graduate on time. Thanks for more work than my 4000 level politics research classes.
I'm 4.0 GPA leading into this class so I'm confident my study habits and abilities are up to par. After taking this class I was LOST from day 1. The amount of reading is enough for TWO classes. This isn't a true Rock N Roll history class. This is a reading class that requires you to somehow pick out the random facts the instructor deems important.
I was one of those people that didn't watch the lectures until the few days before the exams, so I'm sure I'll have a failing grade because of "attendance." I'm online. That's insane how there's attendance deductions ONLINE. The point of online is to take it at your own pace, who cares if I don't watch til last minute, it's my choice to cram.
Would not take this course again. He made it very hard to increase your grade or do good.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! This professor is absolutely horrible and the class is just a waste of time. I took this class my last semester thinking it was going to be easy but little did I know it would be the hardest I've ever had. Ended the course with a 59 and would not round my grade 1 point in order to graduate so now I have do summer classes.
Insane amount of reading from two textbooks, hours of videos to watch, and intense note-taking at home- showing up to every lecture and taking notes there won't cut it. I respect his passion and knowledge of the course, but 100% will NEVER take his class again. He has unreasonable expectations that make the class miserable.
would not recommend taking this class. he is definitely passionate about what he does, but for a class most people will take as an elective, he is way too strict about exams and attendance.
Overall easy, but professor made it awful
This class started a little vague, but once a routine is established it is fine. There is a lot of reading, listening and lectures, but I never felt like it was more than expected and I came out knowing so much about the history of rock and roll. Professor was encouraging and answered timely when I had questions.
I had him for Honors History of Music in Film and I absolutely hated the class. The rubrics are out of date and guidelines are unclear. His lectures are just him yelling over a YouTube clip playing at full volume. He is a very nice guy, just not a good class to take.
This was the worst and most difficult professor I have ever had. The lectures are four years old, which doesn't help with motivation. Horrible to contact and did not get back to me for months, even with follow-up emails. There were too many lectures and readings when it was time for the exams the questions felt like they were pulled out of nowhere.
this class was alot of work for an elective but its not too bad
Dr. Landes was great! His lectures were very entertaining, and he worked hard to keep the class engaged. He was very lenient on grading and offered many extra credit opportunities that were worth many points. The class was not difficult or very time consuming as long as you pay attention and complete your work on time.
This class requires a lot of work, but the professor's passion and knowledge make it worthwhile. Utilize unstuck ai and the free textbook to stay on top of the material.
The professor gives many extra credit opportunities but he is unclear of the instructions. After students put in effort to receive the credit, he tends to add more obligations for work to be received which is VERY misleading. (He should probably get another hobby than playing the bagpipes because he's 💩)
Makes you buy his textbook so he gets $62 dollars more out of every student, 0 tolerance for anything. Lets be honest, this is a blowoff class for stem majors, this guy treats it like its the most important class ever, REQUIRES you to interact with course materials 9 hours a week and will take off points if you dont. just choose another class.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS! His online classes use lectures from Fall 2020, the lectures have very little to do with the assignments, quizzes are based off readings, and the tests have nothing to do with lectures. If you can avoid taking his classes, avoid it.
Genuinely the worst class i've ever taken. I'm a STEM major that typically pulls A's and B's and this class tanked my GPA. The dude will knock 60+ points off an assignment if he doesn't think you're engaging with his 5 year old lecture videos 9 hrs weekly. He grades attendance despite it being an online class. Makes it damn near impossible to pass.
Ignore people saying he's a bad professor if you take this class in person. He's actually one of my favorite professors, just put in the work and take notes. He's a forgiving grader and is extremely knowledgable about the history of rock. You will enjoy this class if you aren't just taking it as a blow off class.
Worst class I've ever taken. I took this because I wanted an easy A for my gen requirements, but the actual work is insane. Quizzes are based off readings, tests are based off separate 30-60 minute videos, and the only thing lectures are used for is the midterm and final. He uses 2020 lectures that haven't been updated. Worse professor I've taken.
Do not take this class as an easy A, blow off class. He's very passionate about the class which I appreciate but it's a lot of work for an elective and honestly pretty difficult. This class takes up more time than my chemistry and anatomy classes combined. So if you're looking for an easy creative arts credit, don't make the same mistake I did.
Worst professor I've ever had. The way content is tested is awful and the tests aren't even over lectures. This was a blow off class for the general requirements. I ain't even a music major, so I expected it to be easy since it was just a general class. It requires more work than any of my other 4 classes combined. DO NOT TAKE HIM OR HIS CLASSES!!!
Don't take this class unless you want to go to the psych ward. He's so bad at teaching that every day in his class I've wanted to blow the my brains out with a shotgun. Don't take him or his classes ever.
Never take him, horrible class and teacher. On tests only uses the smallest details from the lecture.
I originally took this class because I was curious about the History of Rock and Roll, but it was much different. I found that this course focused on more specific information. When taking listening quizzes, your best bet is to use Shazam. GO TO CLASS! Attendance is taken by whether you are sitting in your assigned seat in every class.
Good professor, can get boring at times and projects are tedious. If you make a point to try in his class he will help you. Gives a lot of extra credit if you attend his concerts, very knowledgeable in music performance, music history, and languages. However he is an acquired taste, and just know he will try to recruit you for his other classes.
I took Dr. Landes, and he told us that "this is the course that is the most fun at Texas Tech!" Little did I know, he was very wrong, and I would be pissed the whole semester. You have a long worksheet that is due every Friday at 10 AM. You have a quiz every Friday in class. You listen to music in every lecture, and it's confusing and boring.
Every class is death by power point with MAYBE a minute of listening to music. You are graded on attendance, reading exams, listening exams and attendance. He is a nice guy and granted me an extension after missing an exam but this class is not what I expected. I do not recommend. I also paid for a text book that I never even looked at.
He's not too bad as long as you attend the lectures and write down exactly what's on the powerpoints. His class is pretty manageable. I would say though that if you're not interested in rock or music in general, this class isn't for you.
he assigns so much homework like no joke. this is supposed to be an "easy" class, but he treats it like it's your major. He also grades like it's your major. if you want an easy class DONT take this, but he does offer extra credit.
This class was ridiculous. No due dates were ever posted on canvas, so you had to manually look through the syllabus and set reminders to when everything was due. There was hardly any lenience on tests, and the test were all proctored and recorded. The lectures are all six years old and not to mention he makes you buy a book that you wont use.
Super super lecture heavy and will not post his lectures on canvas, so be prepared to take notes. Lots of homework and quizzes and additional exams on top of the final and midterm. Lectures can be boring, but he sometimes talks about interesting things. This is not an easy A, so only take it if you're ready to study a lot and take lots of notes.
