No final. 3-4 short papers. B4 the final drafts are due, he lets you peer edit them. Can miss 3 classes, the 4th lowers your grade by one letter, the 5th fails you so watch out. no extra credit. he is passionate about english & the class is really easy! if you have an opinion he listens & hes not the type of teacher that thinks he knows everything
Laverty is an amazing teacher! the whole class is discussions, and short paper assignments that are extremely helpful! he is an awesome teacher, and a great help! HIGHLY RECCOMMEND!
3-4 papers due throughout the semester. must attend all but 3 classes. this is my favorite professor at UNCW! He really makes the class interesting and he knows what he's talking about i promise! If you dont like writing papers then dont take him. but if you do you wont regret it!!! he's wonderful!
You will have about three short books to read. Usually good reads. No final. There was a paper after each book and then a final paper. Professor is very helpful, understanding and nice. He is always will to help his students. I had this teacher for 101 and 201 and each class and fun. Teacher holds class discussions which are always fun.
Read the short stories. There are about 4-5 short papers due throughout the class, they are not difficult. One of my favorite professors ever!
Great professor. 4 papers and a couple exercises and he cancels classes the days your papers are due. very interesting class and Laverty is a really intelligent guy. Very funny too, all around great professor and really cares about his students. Definitely recommended to take!
Expects you to do work - understanding of special circumstances. Really fun. Teaches well. Enjoyable class
Amazing teacher. His class was so much fun, and he really cares about his students. Probably my favorite class so far at UNCW.
i love laverty! he makes literature interesting even if you could care less about lit. buy the book, come to class, and you will do well. he really cares about his students and wants them to do well and engage in class discussions. def take him!!
Loved this class. Read the stories because class is more fun when people can talk about them. Laverty really cares about his students and is very fair when it comes to grading. I still chat with him if I see him on campus.
Mr. Laverty is a kind, fair, passionate and understanding teacher. English is definitely not my best subject but he was very helpful. The class lasted 2 hours but flew by because it was so interesting. I got sick and missed 4 days but he gave gave extra credit assignments to make up for the missed classes. I'd take this class again in a heartbeat!
Fantastic teacher! I really enjoyed going to class this summer! Not only was he helpful & understanding, his wit & love for discussion motivated us to read the material. I got a lot of out of this class.
Lit is not my thing but Laverty makes it decently entertaining. fairly easy class if your a good writer. you get 3 unexused absences and we watched 10 -15 minute clips of movies at the end of each class for our "project grade." Good teacher, very helpful
very energetic professor. he makes class interactive and interesting. papers are hard but hes a fair grader. overall deffinitely a good class to take.
I absolutely love Laverty. I really enjoyed english class and the stories he chose. He seems genuinely interested in the class discussion and I think that's your chance to impress him. Even now (a year later) when I run into him on campus he remembers me. If you can get him to write you a recommendation, do it!
Awesome teacher. Favorite professor so far. Good feedback and makes class fun. TAKE THIS TEACHER
He's the best teacher I have...very passionate and intelligent. He's really nice and will help you out if you need anything. Show him that you're trying hard and participate and he'll love you and go easy on your grade.
Keeps the class interesting. Read the required material or he will start giving quizzes. 4 papers. Don't **** your papers cause he'll know. Put in the effort and you'll get the grade.
He is a very nice guy and super energetic. I took one of his classes and loved it so much, I went for the advanced journalism the semester after. Class is really fun and he treats you like you are part of his news team at a paper. He does not treat you like a student, but rather a peer. Definitely take his classes!
AWESOME PROFESSOR! TAKE HIM! The readings you do are actually kind of interesting and he has a lot of good input. HE KNOWS WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT!
Laverty is fairly easy, just don't miss too many classes or test him. He's a somewhat lenient grader and a funny, personable guy. He creates a comfortable classroom atmosphere and is easy to approach. :) Recommended.
Well...there is a lot of reading every night, but I only read one story the entire class (and that was only because I had to write an essay about it). Pretty much your entire grade in the class is dependent upon your grades on three essays. If you can write essays decently, then you should have no problem getting an A!
Great teacher! Teaches based on students interests and always pushes you to do your best. not easy, but easier than most. recommend him without a doubt
yo laverty has been my favorite professor at uncw.. definitly would take him again
He was one of my favorite teachers ever. He graded and gave feedback in a way that made me WANT to do better and become a better writer! Also, he cares about important things going on in the world, which is really cool. Take as many of his classes as you can!!!
This was my favorite class! I loved the intellectual discussions and how students were encouraged to create their own stance on ideas from assigned readings. His enthusiasm and high expectations motivated the class to participate in these discussions and transformed a normal class setting into one where every seat was full for every class!
Prof. Laverty is great. He has great discussions about material, and helps you to be a better writer. He is open-minded, and allows people to speak what they think. He offers good advice on writing assignments. The best way to an easy class is to participate in reading discussions.
Prof. Laverty is a great journalism teacher. He's very down-to-earth and really wants his students to experience what its like to be a journalist. Very cool guy, helpful and interesting. If you like writing and you're good at it this class will be a breeze. Not many assignments or quizzes but put effort into what you get.
AWESOME . take take take
He is my favorite teacher! COMES HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
This man is by far my favorite teacher ever. Extremely inspiring, and an amazing journalist/writer. Taking two of his classes this upcoming semester. TAKE ANY CLASSES HE OFFERS.
This was a great class! He's really into current events and a major portion of the class is talking about current issues. There are major papers you have to write. He is an excellent professor and really knows how to help you out with a paper. He can be a tough grader, though. My favorite class this semester take him!
Great teacher, always excited to go to this class. Made writing actually fun and learned how to really analyze a story
Laverty is easily the BEST professor I've had at UNCW. He's super encouraging, helpful, and overall just a really nice person. He makes reading/analyzing stories actually fun and I learned to look forward to class! His essays aren't too hard if you try - he gives really good feedback, too, so you actually feel like you're improving as a writer!
Mr. Laverty is awesome! I would take Journalism all over again because of him! I went in with no ideas on journalism and came out with a story in the Seahawk, skills to write news features, breaking new stories, profiles and skills for broadcasting. 4 big assignments, serious attendance policy, Awesome teacher!!!
Laverty is tough when it comes to attendance and cell phones, but pretty laid back otherwise.
Laverty is an awesome guy. His class is mostly discussion based about current events, and loves any and all input. Very helpful with any questions, makes funny comments, and easy to get along with. As long as you don't sleep and text in class, you will be fine. Also, get the books, or else you will be lost and fail!
LOVED HIM! Great guy, great stories. Extremely humble. You will especially love him if you're liberal ;)
Laverty is absolutely the best professor I've ever had - he's super funny, knowledgeable, and inspiring. Classes are really interesting and though the assignments can be a lot of work, you really do pick up a lot of new writing and researching skills. I would highly recommend any class that he teaches!
AWESOME Professor. Definitely one of the best I've had ever. Extremely helpful with papers and assignments. He assigned readings for almost every class but never gave quizzes or checked as long as discussion in class was decent. Does current events every class which takes up alot of time. TAKE HIM! (Added bonus: Smoookinn hot and soo intelligent.)
Laverty is my favorite professor at UNCW! There are 4 papers total (quality over quantity) and pretty short readings for every class. You aren't quizzed as a general rule, but be prepared for the discussions in class. LOTS of current event discussion, which I LOVED. Hes opinionated and loves engaging. Looked forward to class everyday! Take him!!!
Love Professor Laverty! He really gets into the readings, which makes material that would be otherwise a little dull really interesting. He provides a lot of historical context for what we are studying. He is also very friendly and funny. He is a wonderful professor and I would strongly encourage taking him. Be prepared to read and write!
Laverty is a great teacher. I highly suggest taking him, especially for this class. It's not a lot of work at all. Two quizzes and two papers in total. It's a lot of reading, but the classes are discussion based so if you forget to read sometimes it's okay because other people can cover you. It's a good class.
Rory's class is great. Before taking his journalism class I didn't really care about current events. I liked op-eds. However, his class taught me that what's happening is important.I'm a better listener, writer, and reader because of it. Be prepared to write, but it's not hard. ENG 202 with Laverty takes you out of your comfort zone in the best way
Class is definitely worth it if you're pursuing journalism. The class itself is easy, lots of current events discussion that keep you informed and allow you to express your opinion. Articles can be challenging but if you put in the work, they're easy. DO NOT PROCRASTINATE!!! Just take the class, you won't regret it.
If you want to be a journalist take this class. He's a great teacher and will help you achieve qualities of a successful writer.
Mr. Laverty is an excellent journalism professor and resource to students. He has lots of experience in the field and connections. I often found myself researching current events on my own so I could contribute more to class discussion. If you pick story topics that interest you, the projects will be a lot of fun. Do NOT text in class!
I have Laverty for ENG 101 and it's my favorite class. All he talks about is current events and we end class early most of the time. He's a fairly easy grader and such a funny and entertaining guy. It's a pretty easy A and I would definitely take any of his classes again.
He's super awesome, very laid back, and such a funny guy. Just make sure as you put the time and effort into your essays and attempt to express your opinions in class. If you do both of those things you will get a high grade. I would love to take more English classes with him! By the way, don't even think about using your cell phone
I had Mr. Laverty over the summer and he had great stories about when he was in Journalism. He incorporate that into the class and we had quite a few fun activities. He was pretty laid back but really enjoys hearing students talk, participation matters! GET INVOLVED. It's a fun class and I wish I could have taken more classes with him.
Professor Laverty is the man, that's the best way I can put it. There are few professors that care about what they're teaching and whom they're teaching it to, and Rory is one of them. I've always enjoyed writing, but had never really written anything for journalism. This class was challenging in way that makes you feel satisfied.
Professor Laverty is an awesome dude. He's relatable and hilarious. He doesn't do any busy work, but instead likes to discuss and debate different current news events. As long as you show up for class and do well on the papers, it should be an easy A.
I love Professor Laverty. That man is the bomb. He talks about all the stuff currently going on in the world and has the class debate it in different ways. When you have to write an essay he basically lets you choose whatever you want. I think with him I made a mentor and friend. I definitely recommend taking it and having a great time.
Super nice guy. We mainly talked about current events, so the class was very relevant to everyday life. He's very understanding and loves to listen to people's opinions.
I love this guy. He's a great professor and I've learned so much in his class about English and about current events.
This is an amazing class!! As an intro class, you do write like 4 journalism stories but none of them are longer than 4 pages. Laverty is a great professor and you will not regret taking this class!
Class was discussion based and interesting
This was an easy A for sure. We discussed news topics during class and worked on our papers (3 in total) outside of class. No tests or quizzes, just the 3 papers. Would recommend.
Great professor, discuss a lot of current events during class. had one presentation on whatever you thought was interesting and 4 papers. Gives good feedback and makes class fun
This class is fun, and unique! The professor is extremely knowledgeable, and humorous. His experience as a journalist adds volumes to the class experience. If he taught all journalism classes, UNCW would have a massive increase in journalists! Want to pass? Resource properly, and engage in topics. As a military vet, I highly recommend this class.
Took his class online during the summer and it was very manageable. 2 papers and a discussion on a current event everyday but he keeps them interesting. He's not a super tough grader so if you try hard you can get an A. He loves hearing peoples opinions which is nice in a class based on research papers.
Best class I've taken so far. Always gives good feedback on the papers you submit and is extremely engaging in the current event topics discussed during class. Would definitely recommend to anyone who needs an English class.
Great Professor! Sure, there's only a couple of papers that you're graded by, but there's no final and you have plenty of resources to get A's on the papers you turn in. Class can be frustrating to some because he doesn't necessarily talk about english, but it's always interesting and about important current events. Attendance is very mandatory.
Professor Laverty is a damn cool dude. Really wants to help his students become better writers. Each class you debate a different topic and he trains your argumentative style. Four papers, each being worth more than the last. If you're a heavy phone user don't take his class, he will kick you out. Definitely demands respect, but is super laid back
Laverty is THE BEST! I enjoyed ENG 103 so much and I totally recommend him. There are a few papers to write, and he gives great feedback to them. Take Laverty!
Mr Laverty is a great professor and made 103 really easy. You only have to write 4 papers, and as long as you try you will get an A. You have to go to class every time, but you just talk about current events. His class is an amazing way to get two english credits out of the way. Its an awesome and chill class
Absolute beast. Excellent facilitator of Socratic discussion. Can rattle off full names of persons involved in a journalistic piece from a decade ago. Demands respect for the entire classroom. Keeps whole class engaged, don't even think about pulling out your phone. 10/10.
I loved this class so much! We talked about current events and had great class discussions every class and had 4 papers mixed in and he gave great feedback and really improved my writing. I would totally recommend him!
Definitely one of my favorite classes, you have to go to class but all you do are discussions on current events. Laverty facilitates great discussions while being honest and super chill. We had 4 papers but nothing ridiculous- if you go to the writing center they'll be a breeze (and you get extra credit).
Professor Laverty is very opinionated and tends to grade papers accordingly. He is more of a journalism professor, so it was difficult for ENG 103 to write papers that he actually liked. But he is a pretty cool dude and always made class interesting as we would start each day with a current event, which we would all then discuss.
One of the best professors Ive had at UNCW so far. Extremely knowledgeable and gives extremely insightful feedback on papers.
You have 4 papers and that is your grade for the class. His lectures are awesome and I never wanted to miss class. Honestly one of the best professors on campus. He is super real with you and if something comes up and you talk to him then he is very understanding. I HIGHLY suggest taking this class!
I took him for eng 202 and he was an amazing professor. I always look forward to going to his class and know I am going to learn something interesting and relevant.
Laverty is a great English 103 professor. He talks about current events and inspires students to do well with their writing. There are four papers in this class: one profile, one rhetorical analysis, one argumentative, and one research paper. It sounds like a lot of first but he spaces them out over 15 weeks. Overall, Laverty is a great professor!
Laverty is an amazing professor and all around great individual. If you're interested in Journalism, do this class and even if you're not interested it's a great class to take for writing intensive.
Super cool, great, passionate professor. Sometimes the assignments can be annoying, particularly if you're not a journalism major, or really interested in journalism. But I feel like I learned a lot and I really grew in my writing. The class discussions were always super interesting and about current events.
take this course with this professor or don't take it at all. awesome guy whose super passionate about journalism. the only class I've ever taken that i didn't mind going to because every class was interesting and interactive. plus he keeps you updated on whats going on in the world which was cool.
Laverty is amazing! 3 easy essays, had a few easy quizzes. All you need to do is read the assigned readings - they're all so interesting. he's funny, smart, and keeps the class engaged. Def recommend taking him!
He told me one thing before writing a paper, and then took points off for telling me to do something else. He does not teach. He just gives you an assignment and expects that you know how to do it. Horrible teacher. I wouldn't suggest anyone ever take his class.
This man is awesome. He is passionate about journalism and you will be too after taking his class. If you're ever feeling stuck, talk to him. He is extremely understanding and will help you out. He's an extremely lenient grader and just wants you to try your best. He's also just hilarious and overall a great guy.
Laverty is great!! He is super funny and his class discussions are actually really interesting (this is coming from someone who is a cruise kind of student lol). He doesn't assign a lot of work and typically it's like 3 papers for the semester. I would def recommend to take.
This is a professor that everyone interested in journalism should take. He offers personal experiences to help teach the class about the good and bad parts of being a journalist. He is also very well respected by his students. His class is one that I always looked forward to. There are also a lot of discussions.
This was a discussion heavy class. Lectures were more of a group conversation. The essays were average for an advanced freshman english class. I would highly reccomend .
Dr. Laverty is wonderful. He grades toughly but fairly, and I've learned so much. His lectures are always energetic, he sets clear guidelines, and he makes every class enjoyable. He also gives plenty of time to complete assignments.
He genuinely cares about all of his students. Most classes are open discussions where everyone can voice their opinion. Make sure to go to get participation credit. You only have about four papers to write a semester. I cannot stand English, but this is the first English class I have ever liked in my life. Best class of the semester by far.
Professor Laverty is my favorite professor I've had at UNCW so far! He has great stories to tell that he can relate back to whatever we are learning in class. He is clear about the stories he wants, and is helpful if you're stuck on what to write. He is funny and has no trouble engaging the entire class. I would definitely recommend!
Roger Laverty is my favorite teacher out of all of my years of school. Hes an awesome teacher and a person of substance. His discussions are fun and informative. He has a lot of stories about his journalism career that are fun. Im debating taking another one of his classes not for credit.
Mr. Laverty is hilarious and really passionate about his field. He tells detailed stories about current events and things he's worked on. There are three different types of stories you write throughout the semester which do force you to go to things and/or interview people but it pushed me out my comfort zone. Pretty easy if you just show effort!
This man is a saint. He truly cares about his students--if you're not doing okay, he makes sure to check up on you and works with you. I took his Sports Journalism class not knowing a THING about the content, but he make the class engaging and majorly helps you out network-wise. 100/10 would take any class with him!
He is one of the best professors Ive had so far!! For online you have 1 discussion board every week and then throughout the semester you have 4-5 papers that he doesnt grade too harshly on. He is always reachable through email and you can tell he really cares about his students.
Mr. Laverty is an amazing professor! He was by far the best professor that I had this year. I would 100% take his class again! He makes sure that everyone is included, he cares about his students, and he is very understanding!
If you need an English credit, take Laverty!!! I wasn't interested in journalism too much before taking his class, but by the end I loved his class. He's hilarious and we talked about some cool topics going on in the world, so it's not your average English class because he makes it super fun! TAKE HIM
one of my favorite teachers I've ever had. He is incredibly intelligent and leads class discussions that are actually interesting. took his class the semester we had to go online for COVID-19, and he was incredibly understanding with assignments and due dates considering many of us had things going on outside of schoolwork
Laverty is definitely one of the best professors in the English department. His feedback is thorough and grading reasonable. Lots of communication- he emails about assignments about 3 times a week with details about the assignments.
Best professor ive had. Cares about his students. Gives great individual feedback on papers. Very understanding.
Prof. Laverty gives you a lot of great examples and opportunity to improve your writing in an actually meaningful way. He is flexible and his assignments make sense for the subject material.
I love any class with professor Laverty. He is kind and understanding, gets feedback to students quickly, and creates assignments that are fun. I learned a lot about journalism in the classes I have taken with him and highly recommend anyone else to take his classes.
I was hesitant and nervous to take an accelerated online class during the summer, but this class with Professor Laverty was extremely manageable. He gave great information and guidance on how to write papers and was very reasonable in his grading and what he expected from his students. The workload wasnt bad at all. Great class and great professor
Actually cares about his students
He was constantly checking in on our mental health and asking for feedback on when papers should be due.
Incredible Professor. I haven't finished the class yet. However, I'm confident I'll be getting an A. I hated writing before taking this class. Not only is he a great professor, but he is a great journalist as well. Easy A but decent amount of work. Essay due every 3-4 weeks.
Professor Laverty is an amazing person and teacher. I have gained so much confidence in my self and my writing by taking his class. He is there to guide conversations about difficult topics and support you. A 10/10 professor.
He's really fun and lectures often. However, of the lectures are more of discussions about current events and news. He also gives a lot of tips each time you write a paper. The only downside is that we only had 3-4 grades so you have to put a lot of effort into each paper.
Very easy and enjoyable class, only three papers which are graded very easily. Very flexible with you and often get to leave early.
If you need an ENG 201 credit take his class. His 1:15 min classes never went over the time and we always got out early. Class is mainly discussions of current events so participate to get easy participation points. Three papers which he gives so much time to work on. Take his class.
I absolutely recommend him for any English class. He is great. Cares about the students and looks for their insight on how he can improve EVERY class. Love this man
Dude I love this professor. I am a double STEM major so he actually taught me how to write. I now know how to write an MLA paper so he has literally saved me. He is so funny and chill too. 10/10 recommend!
Classes usually consisted of discussions about political topics. You can't skip class more than like 5 times or something like that. He doesn't grade too hard on papers as long as you show full effort. There are not a lot of assignments but they are very extensive and you should use good time management. Best english class I've ever had.
Professor Laverty is one of the best professors I've ever taken. He is caring and genuinely values every student's opinion. I can't recommend him enough!!
He has been the most influential professor I've ever had. It was my favorite class, and hopefully I'll be able to take another class with him.
Professor Laverty was my favorite professor by far. He cares about his students and always makes class fun and enjoyable. He is a great writer and amazing teacher and I improved my writing so much in his class. He gives very helpful feedback on all papers, too. Overall, would definitely recommend taking any course taught by Professor Laverty.
Dr. Laverty seriously cares about his students. His classes never felt like a waste of time and I always looked forward going to them. This class taught me so much about writing and editing. I would definitely take his class again!
Professor Laverty is a knowledgeable and entertaining professor. He is a journalist so he doesn't waste time on the technical parts of English. Some of the class felt a little pointless but all in all it is a fun class and not too hard.
Roger is an amazing. He makes lectures very interesting and you talk about current things in the world. You have a few papers and a Final paper 5-6 page argument paper of your choice. No homework other than those papers and he grades pretty easily. I would take again for a 101 class
Professor Laverty is one of my favorite professors I have had. His lectures are always interesting and engaging, and you can tell he truly cares about his students and wants us all to succeed. He has a lot of experience and assigns meaningful work that prepares you for journalism.
Great professor. Gives long lectures sometimes rly boring but talks about current events. Only assignments are a few papers due throughout the semester. So easy and lots of time to work on it. Would totally take his class again. DO NOT BUY THE REQUIRED BOOK. YOU WONT EVER USE IT EVER EVER EVER.
Dr. Laverty is one of the best professors here at UNCW. He is qualified as a journalist and every bit of his feedback is valuable. However at times, I do feel like he grades based on what he thinks of the content, and not just the quality of writing itself.
Laverty was a great professor- he is so entertaining to listen to. His grading is tough on writing assignments if you don't follow his instructions but everything is attainable, and his feedback is very good. DONT BUY THE BOOK- YOU BASICALLY DONT NEED IT.
Professor Laverty is an engaging and caring instructor. His classes are discussion-based and really help improve your writing skills. The workload is manageable if you stay on top of it. I found Unstuckstudy super helpful for prepping for this class.
Classes are very interesting because he talks about current events, although he lets his bias shine through a little. Classes in ENG 201 consist of current events for 20-30 minutes, and then instruction on the essay for 10-20 minutes. Very good prior work experience (he is also a professional journalist and has written for the Washington Post.)
I loved professor Laverty, his lectures were wonderful to listen to and very informative! Always willing to help his students out and fight for them in any way he can.
Professor Laverty is very passionate about journalism and seeks to inspire his students to view the world through a critical but curious lens. He assigned multiple long papers, but it's a journalism class and you can only really learn this subject by diving in head first. Laverty makes an effort to connect with his students.
Very passionate and engaging professor! You can tell she cares a lot about writing! We had like 4-5 writing pieces due throughout the entire semester, and that was it. He always left feedback on each. Half the class is him sharing the latest news going on, which I found refreshing because it kept me up to date. Would recommend and take again!
Mr. Laverty is an excellent professor. He's direct, honest, and passionate about his work and his students' success. Before each lecture, he will keep you up on current events, which was super refreshing. He's a real motivator and knows how to inspire his students to put their all into their passions. His class will set you up for the real world.
Professor Laverty is passionate and truly cares about his students' success. His classes are engaging, with frequent group discussions that keep things interesting. Just be sure to stay off your phone or he will call you out, but overall he's a great professor and creates such a supportive learning environment.
Lenient grader. 75 Minute class rarely went over 30. He presents the lecture and then allows you to leave, he will not waste your time with busywork. Talks about current events for a few minutes at the beginning of class, enjoys talking with students.
