Funny as hell
He is NOT a helpful professor, nor is he flexible or understanding.
He calls himself Tricky Lui , and he makes fun of his own accent. Amazing.
very hard, did not explain material clearly
Easy class, just need to organize the material yourself, cuz not very clear
Not that bad. Just go to class and pay attention. He is helpful. Funny too.
unhelpful, hard to understand, called Tricky Lui for a reason
One of the worst professors in the school. Can't teach. Puts students down for his own sake.
This guy is classic; everyone at WPI should have him once. He is the funniest prof I've had. HW is wicked hard though, and of course, beware of his tricks on exams! Tricky Lui for a reason.
This guy sucks at life. he puts students down, accuses people of cheating and he's just a general ass.
He sucks! He isn't clear at all. Tries to spend time to help, but in the end his tests are nothing like what he preps you for.
WORST TEACHER EVER. If you have financial aid, don't even consider taking a class with this guy. For the first test, 199 of 200 students failed. The guy who passed got a 74. RUN AWAY
Very difficult and irrational tests. Homework is entirely unrelated to exam material, it doesn't help because the difficult questions that you need practice in, can only be done with Maple (math software). He is very apathetic towards his students.
terrible teacher
Tricky Lui should not be teaching. He refuses to answer questions in class and openly makes fun of those who ask. On our first exam the average was a 25%...He gave us a make up exam that was harder than the original. WPI needs to do something about him.
This teacher is horrible...on our first exam only 3 out of like 180 passed...and so he gave us a make-up which was harder than the original. He won't answer questions, he grades you all or nothing with no partial credit. He'S EVIL!!!!
Evil teacher. Makes fun of questions. Recieves complaint emails and proudly forwards them to the class mailing list. Introduces new material for final during an "optional" review session the night before. Avoid at all costs!
Tricky Lui is the worst excuse for a professor in the world. He does not care about the students whatsoever and is a horrible human being. He is not approachable and is demeaning in class. NEVER, NEVER take his class. HE IS TERRIBLE!
he picked on my almost every day of class. but that wasn't what was bad. It was how he made other people feel so worthless about themselves... i stronly urge you to only take this class if you have a high self esteem and don't mind going home crying
This guy is a complete ****. He just completely sucks. The worst part is that if you take him once, he'll fail you. So you'll need to take him again.
THIS GUY IS A JOKE. He makes no sense with his all-or-nothing tests that you cant finish within the time period. BEWARE!
Right now I am sitting in his help session. This is rediculous. He is reviewing the first section of the course. The one that we all know 26% of. Yeah, this is helpful... real helpful. Tricky Lui is the worst professor ever. never take his class
Fails a lot of kids, singles kids out during class and makes them feel stupid, tests are ridiculously hard. Occasionally some of his jokes are funny, though - in that "what is this guy smoking?" sort of way.
Extemely difficult class, but despite what others may say, Tricky Lui really did do a very large amount of work to ensure that people passed. Interesting lecturer at least. He was just the messenger of one of the hardest messages ever.
There couldn't be a worse teacher. He should be an embarrasment to the school!
I hate him more than anyone else at WPI. Gets off on failing students. Really pathetic. And no speaky English.
Tricky is quite possibly the most horrible professor/teacher I have ever encountered. Not only does he not know how to teach, he dose not know how to grade.
I don't believe the material to be very difficult yet he makes it very difficult. The hardest amterial of the course was within the first week or so. The homework problems required Maple yet we couldn't use calculators on the test.
OMG how can you complain...chance for a clean slate with the last test (anyone remember alternative grading scheme?). And 4 cheat sheets for it! And give him some credit...he worked his @ss off.
I like this professor because he's hard. Most of the students who put bad ratings are slackers and the type who would rather party than study. I had no problem making an A in this class. It's nice to see a professor who isn't afraid of failing students!
Ridiculously difficult to understand and learn from. Anyone who gets that much pleasure from failing students should not be teaching, and you know something's wrong when 79% of a class fails and the administration has to "step in" and change gra
Lui was an awesome teacher. He told you what he was gonna teach, then he taught it while being perfectly clear with everything. in addition to good teaching, he made the class a lot of fun to go to joking around and whatnot.
Unlike the authors of all the high-rating comments here, I'm not easily fooled into thinking I'm getting an education when my time is simply being wasted by this professor who doesn't really care enough to help students.
Took MA2051 in the fall of 04. Probably the best teacher in the school. Go to him for extra help and he'll make everything clear. No one has any right to complain unless they're retarded...in which case they'd never understand the material
He was the worst professor I encountered at WPI. He would lecture about one subject. He would then assign homework on something completely different. His tests were on subject not covered in the hw or in class. He failed 50% of his classes that Dterm.
I thought Lui was an awesome teacher. He knew and could communicate well the course material, and his joking around was great. Alot of people seem to have trouble with him though... I think as long as you do the HW, you should be fine in this course.
I think that he's a good teacher. You just have to put in your share of the work, in other words study and do your homework.
He's an amazing teacher, he gets the point accross and will answer any question you have for him in a very clear manner. He's really funny and makes his class a fun time. I didn't find anything "tricky" about him and would love to have him agai
Everybody had me really scared about Lui...but he is an awesome teacher! I found him very easy to understand and learn from. If you do your homework/ask for help when you need it (which he is more than willing to give), you'll do fine.
Awesome professor. Explained everything extremely well in plain English (albeit with accent). Has a sense of humor, and enjoys cracking corny jokes. He immensely enjoyed teaching our class.
he's funny.
He's really funny, kept me awake :)
He made some mistakes during lecture, but overall the class was pretty easy, and my god, he is so funny.
Professor Lui is a good teacher and was very willing to help; and doing things like setting up review sessions.
you learn alot, but takes off way too many points on tests, very hard
Judge yourself here are some facts (out of 29): 2 A's, 4 B's, 21 C's and 2 NR's.
Lui is the worst professor i have ever had. he is by far the worst professor ever, in the history of ever.
He is awful. Intentionally mislead entire class of students and laughed about it on a major test. 80% + failed test.
my god this was the worst professor i have ever had at WPI...you can't understand him, his tests are ungodly insane, his homework is just ridiculous to comple in the aloted time, and he makes really really stupid jokes in class that begin to annoy you after a while
This man is evil. He comes from the depths of hell. And he laughs about it.
"Tricky Lui" - Intentionally put an incorrect hint on the board for a test to trap the students. 80% of the class used it...thinking that the professor was trying to teach them. I guess he was. He laughed when he told the class that if you used the hint, you were wrong...because he is "Tricky Lui"
Terrible professor. Does not offer help outside of class. His tests are very hard and are often "exception to rules." Homework is ridiculous and he only grades 1:8 problems.
He doesn't deserve his bad rep. His "tricky" days are over and he is an excellent teacher. I learned a lot from him last year in Calc 3. The tests were pretty easy and followed homework problems to the T.
Prof. Lui is amazing and hilarious. To this point, I have not noted any exceptionally "tricky" behavior on his part. It's true he is sometimes difficult to understand, but he's happy to clarify things if necessary. The material is challenging, but bearable. Prof. Lui is a very funny man; every class is a blast.
couldnt learn from him, horrible accent and talks really fast
awful professor. Dont bother going to him for help, you won't get any. Can't understand a word he says in class either.
For Mathematical Modeling, Professor Lui was fantastic. I can't guarantee the same for introductory calc classes, but with a class he loved and related to his research, Lui did a great job in teaching the material; more importantly, he taught us how to think like applied mathematicians.
Amazing professor. I'll admit I was a bit leery of him at first due to his nickname, but his sense of humor and his teaching ability brought me around. Exams were difficult, but they were fair. I found him to be always willing to help, and always willing to answer questions. Put in your fair share of work, and you'll do well in this course.
Very good teacher. He is not "tricky".
Great Professor, in class he is engaging and often hilarious. Tests were all open book open calculator; they could be challenging at times, but always seemed fair.
Lui is the man. He genuinely wants you to know the material and pass. He is at times hard to understand, and his explanations are usually bizarre, but he is considerate and caring. Give him a chance.
absolutly flipped out on a class, broke down and almost cried after he got so mad he threw his chalk and eraser because a kid asked a question and lui said "because teacher says so" as an explanation, then when he asked again and said "because i said so" isnt going to help him learn the material
Lui was great for Calc I. He's pretty funny and engaging. Lectures were always clear and the homework assigned was very helpful. As others have said, his tests are fair, bit difficult but they make sure you know the material (makes the final easy). Once as a hint "sqrt(2)" -it was not needed. If you study, though, you'll be fine.
Roger is awesome! He makes every class interesting, and always likes to joke around. He also is a great professor. He not only takes the time to explain things in class whenever someone needed help, but he also would arrange times to meet outside of class to make sure every student did well. His tests were a bit tricky but otherwise he is great
Great guy. Specialty is in biological mathematics, so all of his problems relate to biology. He's not easy, but he's helpful and fair to those who are willing to work, and his accent is no problem at all. Learned quite a bit in this class.
Some might call him a DIAMOND in the rough. I just call him rough. I'm all for diversity but for the price I'm paying for this course, I want a prof who speaks clearer English and is more helpful and less tricky. If you have to take him, take him...but go into the course with your eyes open. The guy is tricky and he deserves his tricky nickname.
Not a good teacher. I feel like if the class average is 60% perhaps it is the teacher that is the problem. This quickly becomes the problem for us, the students. We need to know this material, yet no help if offered. Very poor, I shall avoid taking a class with him again if possible.
overall not very good. didn't explain things well, taught from a powerpoint. learned most of the material in lab. also, his exams were nothing like the problems we would do in lab and hw, so that made exams interesting. overall, however, i wouldn't reccomend him.
His "tricky" days are over! When the class did so-so on the first test, he took over conferences from the TA, simplified the second test to questions nearly directly from the homework, and did almost a week of review for it. He's a great teacher, genuinely wants us to pass, and has a great sense of humor. Basically he's the man.
Funny man but tests and quizzes are very hard. Very strange professor and often off topic or unorganized lectures. More interested in theory and proofs then application or examples.
The class itself was wicked hard, but Lui tried to keep it interesting. He's very random, but fun. All in all, I would recommend everyone take a class with him at least once.
really funny will keep you awake but he likes to make his class really hard and gives tons of HW. good at office hours
Worst Teacher i ever had... he made a high school level statistics class hard... worst examples i have ever seen in a math class... He asked the class who was moving on to stats II and then preceded to say that we were screwed because he had not taught us anything.
Not the same guy other people have commented. He cares about students, is helpful, clear, and tests are very do-able. Very funny too!
Anyone who has the opportunity to take a math class with Rodger Lui should! He is the best teacher, he cares about the students, he is hillarious, and he actually TEACHES you. Great experience in Calc II. Grading is fair, and he prepares you for the final. Lui is the man!
Roger is a good prof. pretty funny sometimes. good explanation of material. very involved in helping students do well. it your fault if you dont pass. pretty much begs kids to go to office hours
Great teacher. He might go a little fast, but it is WPI. He likes to make jokes during class (sometimes at students expense), which makes for an enjoyable lecture. Just attend class if he knows you. He know when you don't, and calls you out for it. And go to conference to pick up papers, or he'll give 0's at the end of the term for them.
FANTASTIC lecturer. Keeping a class laughing while teaching differential equations is a feat only Lui can pull off. Tests and homework were reasonable, nothing "Tricky." Only complaint was somewhat questionable grading/curving policies..very harsh on the partial credit and curve.
He will make you laugh. His exams are straight forward, half the test is homework problems. The class did move rather briskly, but do not fall behind in the homework and you'll be fine.
Awesome teacher. He is known for constantly making jokes throughout the lecture. I had him for Ordinary Differential Equations, and he knows how to teach the material. You get to know him well if you go to his office hours, and he also calls on people throughout class to answer a question. I highly recommend him. Great for MA 2051.
He is so excellent
Roger is a great guy who made class enjoyable. He offered help if you needed it and was aware of your performance throughout the course. He is a great professor and I wish I had him for my next calc class because I learned a lot in his course.
Knows everyone's name in class make sure you come. Very funny teacher and explains everything well. Homework and Webwork are easy and he will always go over questions. Tests are only 6 questions and very similar to practice tests he posts online.
Entertaining professor. Very friendly and pretty helpful. Holds lots of office hours for help and knows material well.
Had for Calc II; knows everyone in the class, amazing teaching style, genuinely cares about everyone in the class. If you can have him, do
Roger is the man!!! One of the best professor's I've ever had, hopefully I'll be having him again for Diff Eq. I thought he explained stuff well, and makes it fun so you remember. Will know your name by the first day. Tests are very fair, though the Final was kind of hard. Take a class with him!!
He does not teach to the level of the test and can not focus long enough in class to get through an entire problem. He is very distracting and relied on another teacher to do most of the work. Also could not explain problems well and messed up all the time. Recommend another teacher.
Had him for Calc II and Diff Eqs. He is a great man and a great lecturer. Diff Eqs was a lot of work, but he explains the material really well and is always willing to help students. I would highly recommend Roger.
Lectures and notes are extremely messy and not helpful. Test grades are not fair. I got a hundred on first test and solved every single question for second, but failed it. Better avoid him. If it's too late, just fail it. Don't try hard, you get not even B. Better get NR from him so that you can take it with another prof.
Roger Lui was a fairly good instructor, though for some topics I thought him an unnecessarily harsh grader. Unfortunately he has a habit of disrespecting students and acting unprofessionally while leading class. I would recommend any student to avoid his classes, or at least consult with a student who has had him before.
Pretty meh. Wasn't really interesting, and he made quite a few mistakes during lectures. Overall progress is slow, and although he writes down quite a few stuff not all are useful. Those few days when Farr substituted him were the highlight. Exams weren't hard, he gave out quite a lot of homework, somewhat helpful in answering questions
He is fairly a good instructor and exams are easy.
He got very excited when presenting proofs and was always willing to help students. His tests were based on computation and needed to be done quick. Quizzes were based on proofs and needed a lot of studying. He also loves Bitcoin, you should ask him about it.
He is actually a very inspiration teacher, this course lead me in the world of modeling, thanks a lot. But I have a free rider teammate, so I did almost everything in our project, we got the same grades finally.....
Absolutely zero predefined grading criteria
Lui is a hilarious professor. He will totally call you out for not knowing something, but he is very nice about it and funny. He really keeps your interest with all of the jokes he tells, but also gets the point across. People either seem to love him or hate him. I definitely love him. You just can't take the class too seriously (study though).
Rog was awful. Had zero empathy, wouldn't help you at all, and graded tests extremely harshly. Would avoid like the plague.
Spends all his time on derivations or examples without actually explaining anything. Rarely gave partial credit on exams. Gets side-tracked easily and just talks to you about random stuff instead of helping during office hours.
Rog was hilarious! Very kind professor, sometimes calls students out for no reason at all, but is all in good fun. Wants you to ask questions and go to office hours. If you do , he will remember you for the rest of the term. Very enthusiastic and into what he is doing. Homework is manageable, and tests are pretty easy if you STUDY (it's a thing!).
Roger Lui is a terrible professor, and here's why I would never recommend him to another student. His teaching in lecture is unbelievably confusing. When questions are asked, more often than not the class is left more confused than before. There is no partial credit in this class. Professor is straight up rude to students during office hours. 0/10
Confusing lecture, I self-taught and learned from the TA
Little hard to understand what he's saying, but he works hard to make sure you get the material . If you have questions do ask him. Great class layout with conferences. Do go to conferences. Conferences helped refine what lui covered in class.
Roger is a really nice guy and teach things pretty well. He deserves a higher score than only 3 in this website. Participation is extra credit. 2 exams, 4 quizzes, and 5 webwork is all the thing that matter to your grades. You can do very well as long as you finish all the homework he assign. Webwork is super hard but will not be in exam )
Prof Lui is a funny guy during class and off class. His lectures are sometime hard to follow, thus it's strongly recommended to do the optional homework on textbook. Optional homework helps you understand his lecture materials, and it's super helpful on quizzes and exams! Not a hard class but requires works.
Clear lectures, tests were straightforward with no curveballs
Doesn't go into a lot of detail but is very funny and exams made by him are very fair. Questions are basically set up the integral so if you know what you're doing its a easy A on tests if you study. Doesn't throw curve ball questions which is really nice! Common final is the only reason i might not get an A. Really funny though .
Professor Lui was an okay professor but great guy. Homework and quizzes are really easy and only gives one exam that was super easy. Only thing I felt unprepared for was the Common final at the end of the year. Overall, super funny guy but not the best professor. Also has clicker questions so you have to show up to class for those.
hilarious professor but tough grader, and can be very confusing at times. homework didn't come in accordance with the teaching. Sometimes even forgot what he said previously and made things worse
I had no clue what we were doing at any point in the class. I did all homework and studying based on the few examples he gave. Very hard to understand and random. His jokes were funny, or at least the timing of them made them funny because they were so out of the blue. Only went to class because of the clicker quizzes.
He called me out for eating a sandwich...
What a man and what a cutie. Called me Elvis after on bad hair day. Hilarious man. Once he learns your name you will he called out constantly.
Roger Lui is a straight savage. His lectures are filled with awkwardly placed jokes which lands him a 5/5. The example questions in class are basically your exam. Even if you pay minimal attention in class, you should still pass with an A. If not you should strongly reconsider becoming an engineer. If he learns your name be prepared to be called on
Prof. Lui is a really funny guy - I thoroughly enjoyed all of his lectures. He's good at providing clear explanations during class - you just have to pay attention. If you pay attention in class, work on the homework early, and go to him if you have questions you should be okay. He tends to cover material quickly so make sure to go to class!
Prof. Lui is a great guy, his tests are hard but he is a wonderful teacher and very willing to help out anyone who needs it. I had heard that he was an awful teacher prior to taking his class, but when I actually sat in his classroom as a student I found that he's great, and he LOVES what he does, which is sometimes hard to find.
Hilarious guy. If you pay attention and attend classes, you shouldn't have much of an issue. Does pretty well at getting students to understand the concept (why you are doing something) rather than just memorization. Don't take if you get annoyed easily, but for the majority of people he is a fantastic teacher.
Is an awful teacher. Does easy problems for notes, gives easy homework questions, and then puts stuff on the quizzes/ tests never seen before. Also is hard to understand. However, he is a good guy.
Rudest teacher I have ever had.
Clearly knows what he's talking about at the same time being chill. His notes are neat and clear, and he posts them after every class. He doesn't berate you for asking questions and answers them clearly. His tests are straight-forward as long as you take notes. He has an accent and on occasion makes dry humor, but you get used to it after a while.
He posts lecture notes in time after every lecture, which is well-organized, so you don't even need to attend a single lecture to do well in this course. Also, he provides one or two practice exams and a couple of past exams before midterm and final, as long as you do those problems well, you will get a high A with ease.
Roger is a great professor here at WPI. He truly cares about his students, and sets you up for the future. Put in the work, go to his office, and you will be fine. I have taken many classes with him, and plan to do more.
The lectures were understandable, the work was a good evaluation of the material taught, and I didn't need the textbook to learn, lectures were enough.
I enjoy this professor a lot because he's very entertaining and knows what he's talking about, however he gives extremely hard problems on tests and I had to do a LOT of work outside the class to keep up. I also discovered that it seems we cover more course material than many other MA 1023 classes, which makes it that much more rigorous.
Professor Lui is the funniest professor I have had at WPI. His sense of humor got me through his class. In terms of teaching, he does sometimes have trouble hearing and understanding the questions of the students. He tries very hard to know everyones names. He also gave us plenty of hints for the tests. He lets you bring a cheat sheet in for tests.
Lui goes a little fast, but he is a generous grader and a pretty nice guy.
What a goof. Always laughing at his own jokes. He taught most of the material quite well with some pacing issues. Sometimes hard to understand him through his accent (especially when hes giggling) but i definitely enjoyed his class. Not a bad choice for MA1023
Don't let the jokes fool you, this man is one of the worst Professors at WPI. Definitely the worst in the Mathematics department. While he does try to include humor in MA2051, he does not teach the material at all and expects you to just "figure it out." If you reach out to him, he'll definitely respond, but it won't be helpful. Good luck.
He is a nice guy, but the class lacked structure. His lectures were hard to learn from, the conference with the PLA is how I learned. Projects were pretty hard, but he scales the grade so no one can fail. The final exam was only on one subject matter and very easy.
The class was honestly fine. Just pay attention to the announcements/emails and go to the extra lectures and conferences.
He is a nice person, but I wouldnt say he is an excellent professor. He does not have conferences or office hours, which makes the course even harder than it already is. He does not clarify on many things, and the hw can be confusing sometimes. But he responds to emails really fast, and tries to remember everyones name. He is a nice guy :((
Funny guy. Lectures are good, although he makes a lot of mistakes. Very nice guy and responds to emails fast. Fair grading and good explanations. Good professor.
Most boring class ever
This professor's lectures are hilarious, but I have a hard time getting behind a linear algebra professor who doesn't teach geometric meanings of concepts, it was strictly calculations. Learned more from watching 2 hours of 3 Blue 1 Brown than from this entire course. Also uses Diagonal method for 3x3 matrices.
Confusing lectures. Only does examples and no theories which makes it really hard to follow what he is doing.
He is not respectful of students. I went to his office hours for help understanding what i did wrong on an exam and he told me that I don’t deserve to be at WPI and that he would not help me. I somehow passed, no thanks to him
