OMG, I had actually talk to MGMT chairman because Roger Mendoza takes 2:45 minutes of his class, gives 5 minute break, let us leave after 8:45 and assign readings of 75 pages 24 hour before the actual class. He got better after my complaint to the Diem. Hard test and group project. Not supportive during Covid, made us do everything anyway.
Amazing prof! Knows everything! Answers student questions clearly and thoroughly, w/out notes. Yes, lots of readings and participation matters, but you definitely learn a lot from him. Grades fairly for the work you do and the initiative you show. Will definitely take again.
yeah, he makes you think and learn... very practical, problem-solving tests... the kind of professor you will truly thank and appreciate 5 years from now... brilliant
Really the best prof I ever had at CalStateLA. Highly experienced in finance and knows his subject by heart, w/out using notes. CalStateLA needs more profs like him.
Two case study presentations, an individual and a group one. Before the group presentation he wants a detailed outline. He sent it back to us like four times before approving it. He uses every minute of the class. He has a spinning wheel with all our names to force us to participate. Many students dropped the class. Exams and worksheets are hard.
The most inspiring Prof I've ever had. Taught me a lot and challenged me a lot to think outside of the box. There was a spinning wheel for random-pick participation but without it, students would then simply snooze while on Zoom with their box still lighted on. Great mentorA+
A+++++++ MY BEST PROF EVER!
I went to both UCLA and here at CSULA, and have had several really good profs, but I would say none as impressive as Dr. Mendoza Knows everything about the subject and always available to answer any question, in & out of the classroom. Outstanding mentor!
Topnotch prof: Knows his subject (finance) even upside-down and inside-out, and otherwise. Simply brilliant.
Very challenging -- but very rewarding -- class + great professor!
I'd say CalState's finest prof
One of my 2 best teachers at CalState (the other was Dr. Essaian). Made me work hard, but grades fairly, very thorough lectures. Learned so much stuff I now use at work.
He makes you work hard, as a few others wrote here. And a spinning wheel keeps you on your feet for class participation. But he knows his subject by heart, teaches well and w/out notes, explains even hard financial stuff in a very comprehensible way, and you always leave class knowing a lot more (that you can use in your career).
Very caring professor, especially outside of class time: takes much time/effort to explain everything in detail when you ask him. Second time I'm taking a class under him (before, it was healthcare finance).
AWESOME teacher, very thorough in explaining everything
I really consider Dr. Mendoza my best professor at CalState-LA!!
Great lectures. Quite heavy course requirements but you definitely learn (health insurance/financial risk mgmt). Fair grader.
I agree with what many people have said here. He is very knowledgeable, and also very helpful prof. There are quizzes, mid-term and final exams, projects to do, besides participation, but he keeps you engaged. And you can ask this prof anything anytime, and he has all the answers, with all the details you can imagine.
Dr. R. Mendoza is the CLASSIC PROFESSOR - formal, eloquent, classy, well versed in what he teaches. This is my 3rd class with him (took MGMT 4335 HC finance and MGMT 5154 health insurance) & I continue to learn a lot in class. Sure, there's quite a bit of work to do + he never goes for asynchronous class, but you gain a lot from him.
Knows his subject very well, and answers any questions very thoroughly and in a way that one can comprehend. Has several class requirements, but they are all skill-based and practical. Take him only if you really want to learn finance (and maybe find a career in this field of healthcare mgmt).
A really, super smart prof. My favorite prof at CSULA so far. His risk and insurance class can at times be challenging but definitely worth taking (and btw participation matters in this class).
Dr. Roger Mendoza is my #1 prof @CalStateLA most organized class I've ever had; very thorough and in-depth; learned so much about finance. I'd say CalStateLA would be a much better place if only all profs were like him.
You've got quite bit of work to do in his healthcare finance course: class workshops, 3 take-home financial worksheets that double as quizzes, a mid-term exam, finals, graded recitation, seminar paper+presentation, group project, & synchronous class discussions. But you learn a lot of practical skills & strategies. Challenging but great class.
My best professor ever! I learned so much about finance that I could use at work (and got to like it, too). Thanks a lot, Dr. Mendoza!
All HC business majors should take his class. A+ professor. Will give you all the time you need to consult. A classmate once disagreed while he was graphing the reorder point (to replenish inventory at the shortest time and lowest cost). Instead of saying she was wrong, he showed her step by step why her alternate method was cost-inefficient.
I am a finance major, and took this (Healthcare Finance) only as an elective. But I seem to have learned more from this course than my finance major courses. Outstanding prof. Some of the material was quite heavy, but Dr. Mendoza explained them so clearly, coherently and in ways we could relate to real-life decision-making.
This is the 3rd class I've taken under this prof, and always finished w/class acquiring a new skill (cost-effectiveness analysis last week). To do well: 1. never be absent, if possible, 2. always participate (he spins a wheel to choose who will answer a question), and 3. read everything he posts on Canvas.
Yeah, do the in-class and take-home workshop exercises, participation is important, and cover everything posted on Canvas, then you should be good. He is one of the finest profs I've ever had at CalStateLA and another school I went to.
Very helpful and supportive esp. IF you seek him out; excellent teacher!
If he sees you are trying your best (participation matters, doing all financial workshops, reading/downloading Canvas assignments -- unfortunately, profs can see all your Canvas activity), he'll help you all the way. I liked that he spent as much time advising + consulting, and never rushed me, esp. since some of his material can be heavy.
Very knowledgeable. Topnotch prof! Always available to be consulted.
School year is ending... and this is the second time I've taken this prof. Outstanding. Learned a lot. A big thank you, Dr. Mendoza!
Awesome class and prof! Some of the material was rather heavy, esp. insurance, inventory management, and capital investment. But this prof. digested it for us w/ real-life examples and explained very well.
Yes, amazing teacher! Readings & workshops can be hard to understand, but he explains well.
Finance is not your easy subject, can be quite hard to understand. But this is a top-of-the-line prof. who knows the subject in and out. I think the best teacher I've ever had.
He's a great teacher. Thanks, sir!
Very helpful and supportive, yet meticulous and to the point. Rigorous and demanding capstone course. But the prof. was accessible outside of class hours and regular consultation time, even on weekends, and offered advice on every stage of my project to meet Graduate School standards and complete a project presentable to future employers.
Challenging HC finance class, but exceptionally outstanding professor and mentor, where you'll really learn!
Helped me learn finance even if I am not good w/ numbers, though I found it quite tough. Prof was fair/clear grader. Grade requirements: pop quizzes, mid-term exam, finals, 1 case study, 1 group report, and class participation matters here.
Learned a lot from Prof. Mendoza. Class just ended for the semester - and I miss it already!!
Learned a whole lot from this professor. A+
What a class! Highly recommended. Very smart Prof., explains and guides you every inch of the way. Could really use plenty of stuff for my career. Exams and quizzes are open book but you have to study well.
Knows everything about finance! Wish we have more professors like him at CalStateLA!
Besides all tests being open-book, I like that he asks questions that make you think and then he guides/leads you to the right answer (unlike other profs that only want to make you speak or to embarrass you in class).
Great prof + highly recommended. Learned much about healthcare Finance from his many published works. A lot of quizzes but manageable if you do the sample quizzes each chapter.
What a great class! AAA pro! I will surely be back in your HC Finance class in the Fall.
Learned a lot from MGMT 4335 (financial management in healthcare industry) than any other course I took at CalState LA. I will also enroll in his other healthcare finance course (insurance) in the next school year.
Highly recommend this class/prof: 1 mid-term, 1 finals, 1 case study, 1 group project, practicum-workshops, and several quizzes but quite reasonable (1-3 questions per quiz)
Honestly, my best professor ever!
Amazing prof. Knows everything (try asking him anything), lectures w/ no notes. Fair grader, too. Will miss him (and I'm not a female).
Highly recommend. Take class + prof = won't regret it. Lots of prep and work but really top-quality, hands-on learning from amazing teacher.
Triple A for my prof!
enjoyed this class. lots of quizzes and workshops and readings but very useful. and yes, awesome professor to take for healthcare finance/insurance.
This was the third/last class (just graduated) I took under Dr. Mendoza - MGMT 5154/4154 (insurance), 4335 (finance), 4330 (regulation). All excellent. Learned a lot. Highly recommend this prof!
Very organized and methods based. Teaches some financial/insurance stuff I am really able to use or apply at work. Thanks, sir!
Class just ended 4 days ago and wanted to thank this professor for his passion and dedication. Very helpful; and available for as much time as we needed to consult.
Highly recommend this HC finance course, Mgmt 4335. Outstanding prof. Lectures note-less, remembers every page of our textbook + dates discussed in class. Required: workshops, quizzes, mid-term, finals, case study, group project. A bit tight workload, but you'll finish confident you learned much + useful in the real world.
Did not understand insurance at all until I took it with him this sem with his great teaching style.
Prof is outstanding, highly recommend course.
Definitely the expert in the subject (hc finance), in and out. Helps you understand everything in a practical way so you leave knowing a lot more. Yes, tough material and course required plenty of readings and practice and tests but manageable. It says here, "Would you take this professor again?" Obviously, I am taking his 4330 this Spring.
Yes, a bit embarrassed that I am doing this only now (after Dr. Mendoza managed to put me in my current job). But perhaps still better late than never to say this -- You have really been the most brilliant and inspiring teacher I've ever had in my life (and you know who I am)!
Excellent class, highly recommend. Many(problem-solving) quizzes - but if you do practice tests at the end of each textbook chapter + participate in class should be fine. Prof. gives extra credit for in-class workshops and attendance. 1 case study + 1 group project also required.
Would highly recommend, too. Expert on his subject, lectures from memory, clear about his expectations of you. A+
Attendance, class participation and doing the practice quizzes at the end of each assigned textbook chapter are the secrets in doing well in MGMT 4335. He supports and helps you a lot, even for hours of consultations, if he sees you are trying your best (even if you generally don't do well :).
My amazing prof! You never leave each class without learning A LOT along w/ their practical applications.
Thanks for opening up our eyes to the worlds of insurance and finance. He adjusts courses to the overall level of class prep for manageability, by asking at the start of sem. if we want to do them at the basic, intermediate or advance level of quantification. TAKE HIM.
Great regulations class. Best professor ever!
Very passionate and knowledgeable in what he teaches. No wonder he's won top professor awards in the US and around the world. Highly recommend for sure.
Excellent prof. Always Impeccably dressed. Some subjects were tough, esp. taxation, financial risk and materials mgmt. (when/how to replace inventory at the lowest possible cost, highest discount, sufficient re-supply level, etc.). So do the textbook practice tests. He simplifies them w/ cases, games and exercises.
Highly recommend -- agree with other raters. A+++ professor!
Dr. Roger Lee Mendoza is by far my "best prof"! Knows everything about finance and insurance, lectures with no notes, simplifies complex equations for us and analyses them upside down, encourages us to disagree or voice our opinions in class. But gotta do his take-home workshops and textbook quizzes. Definitely Take Him.
Outstanding prof. A+++. I did not expect to learn (AND ENJOY) finance as an elective until I took Dr. Roger Lee Mendoza's which I Highly, highly recommend to all.
My favorite professor! I learned so much from this class that just ended. Will miss him (too bad there are no more courses I can take under Dr. Mendoza).
Overall, a good professor, make sure you read and participate. Always show up to class if you can it will help a lot towards the end of the semester. There will be pop quizzes so make sure you read the material!
Amazing prof. Knows his stuff from the heart. Does not read/use notes when he lectures. Always ready to answer any question w/in or outside of classroom. You really learn a lot from him if you read the assigned materials, do the practice exercises and come to class prepared.
Truly excellent, A+ !
Finance courses can be tough ... and this one is. But prof. made it much easier to understand everything, esp. cost-accounting, inventory funding, taxation, & insurance problem sets. Trick is 1. read all Canvas assignments per week, 2. do practice quizzes per chapter; 3. participate in class/workshops. He explains well & helps you a lot.
Teaches beyond the textbook w/ out lecture notes. A+++ for Dr. Roger Lee Mendoza
Took insurance/fin. risk management and recently HC finance under Dr. Roger Lee Mendoza - brilliant, multi-awarded professor. Yes, courses can be a bit challenging. But he is quite good in using workshops, graphs, practice tests to illustrate. Just ask questions in class and consult w/ him if you are a bit lost.
Learned much from him, yeah strict but cares about his students.
Healthcare finance class just ended. I will miss this prof - really my best at this school. Wish I could take more courses under him.
Learned lots of stuff from this incredible prof cuz he teaches a tough subject in a very practical, skills-building way to can use at work and with personal finance. Take him: you won't regret it, even if, yes, you might need to work a bit more.
Read assigned stuff listed/explained each week on Canvas, and do the practice quizzes at the end of the assigned textbook chapter, and you'll do fine. He is very helpful. Willing to mentor students for as long as it takes, even beyond consultation hours, as long as you do the work.
This is a top quality prof. HC Finance requires 5 Excel worksheets/quizzes, 1 finals, 1 case study (indiv), 1 project (group), 4 class calc. workshops, but no mid-term. If you do the practice tests per chapter and follow the report manuals, you'll score well and get extra credit, too.
Our class was actually MGMT 5330, but only the 4330 undergrad section is listed here. So this is where I'll have to rate this excellent professor, Dr. Mendoza. You taught me so much, thank you, Sir!
Best prof ever. Like that he has all the time for you when you consult, never makes you feel it is time to go, esp. if he sees you are trying hard in finance (def. hardest subject in undergrad/grad HCM). Curves grades. Also, do the in-class calculation workshops to earn bonus points.
Dr. Mendoza is an excellent mentor and prof., very organized, precise, and knowledgeable. Cal State LA is lucky to have him.
Tough but teaches well and cares about his students (this is for MGMT 5330 which somehow is not listed here). Highly recommend, too.
Highly recommend this MGMT 4335 class. It is practical, material is engaging and Professor Mendoza is brilliant (knows finance all around) and always ready to answer any questions. I especially enjoyed the segments on insurance, taxation, and banking and currency (but can't skip the chapter practice quizzes to do well).
Lots of quizzes & workshops. Get ready to 1. read everything he assigns on Canvas weekly (textbook chapter/s + supp. material like spreadsheets, videos); 2. never skip the practice tests at the end of each chapter. He's good in using quizzes to drill students in financial methods and skill-building+explains them in a way that makes practical sense.
Hard subject, but A+++ professor!
Yeah, no doubt Dr. Roger Lee Mendoza is top of the line prof. Knows his math inside out. But plenty of graded quizzes/workshops practically each week so must do the practice sections of the textbook as others noted previously. Suggest immediate consultation w/ him if lost.
Just finished this class for the semester. Best professor I've ever had, A+++
Highly recommend. Well organized and drives home the point. Strict but cares about his students. Quizzes, mid-term, finals, 1 case study, 1 group project, and several in-class workshops are quite a lot of requirements, yes, but fair grader + learned much.
Course quite tough w/ quizzes weekly, but he makes the math less complex/applicable to real-life insurance and finance work. Would make for an excellent math prof. also.
His class is excellent!
I personally liked that he (Dr. Roger Lee Mendoza) lectures without notes, can answer any of our questions (from smartest to the silliest) + encourages us to interrupt him with our thoughts and questions anytime. That's what I call "brilliant". The classroom games and simplifying finance calculus in lay terms were personally very helpful to me.
Had him in 2 classes (Mgmt 4335/4330). Both challenging but got us to read, do the textbook practice tests, and prep for "surprise" quizzes that popped up each week, anyway. Learned lots about large datasets during consultations (consult and ask questions because he's helpful even off-the-clock) & he hired me for his research project :)
I like that Dr. Mendoza translates hard concepts/equations into real life insights. In graphing the production possibilities curve, he shows how healthcare access increases by lowering cost but at the expense of quality and technology based on "diminishing marginal returns." Do all weekly Canvas work and you should be fine(he grades fairly).
