Miesfeld is smart and knows his topic. In 460 he tries to cram too much information into the class, then tests on 10% of what he covered. His teaching is poor because he tries to cover too much. I have a high A in this class and my sGPA is high, so I'm not a slacker. The conceptual teaching is very poor and you won't learn much even with an A.
Dr. Miesfeld is awesome. I'm in his biochem class and he's a great lecturer--crystal clear, and after every 15 minutes of difficult material he tells an interesting, relevant anecdote to bring our attention back. He's funny, smart, and makes things interesting. He's the kind of guy who would probably be fun to have a beer with too. I recommend him!
Great prof. Highly recommend. Haven't taken his test yet but he's an awesome lecturer and an all-around cool dude. Very willing to help outside of class too.
Miesfeld is the best! He's hilarious...and a great teacher
Miesfeld is one of the better teachers at the UA, he is very helpful and his class is very do-able if you attend all of the lectures and read his notes that he posts on D2l. He also posts old exams that are very helpful to guide you in studying for the exams! He has 2 opportunities for extra credit as well. I highly recommend this course!
385 is definitely the better choice of the BIOC courses offered, due mostly in part to Dr. Miesfeld. Great teacher. Genuinely cares for students and provides very clear notes and study materials that will assist in studies. In order to succeed, take advantage of the study tools he offers!!
He really is a great teacher. Lectures can get pretty dense sometimes, but the exams aren't too bad. Plus the 20 pts extra credit helps a ton. He teaches very specific detail but doesn't require specific recall, mostly general concepts. I expected the class to be harder than it was. I'd recommend it.
I was not looking forward to biochem. Miesfeld did a really good job in gaining my interest and respect. His lectures usually include humor, which helped maintain my attention. Study old exams and homework and the exams are extremely manageable and fair. I highly recommend this course.
He is a very helpful teacher. He makes the course interesting with helpful real-life problems. This course is highly recommended if you look for a useful and challenging science course.
Awesome teacher, one of the best at the University that I have had. Very clear and tests are very straight forward. If you come to class take notes and study old exams you will do great!
Good lecturer. Makes it very clear the points you need to study. Class was interesting. If you attend class and study you will do fine.
He was my favorite teacher this semester. Not only his he friendly and understanding, he makes teaching complicated material interesting by adding humor and red-letter questions to maintain the class' attention. If you attend all his lectures and study, you will do great. He is also very helpful if you email him with questions.
He is very fair, there is a lot of extra credit so you have to try to do poorly. If you go to class and look over the Key Concepts and Old Exams you'll do fine on the exams. The HW is hard but you can work with people to get the right answers
Dr. Miesfeld has got to be one of my all-time favorite professors. Every lecture is interesting, easy to follow and you will likely walk away from the class with a much better understanding of biochemistry and biological science in general. If I took this class earlier in my college career I would have switched my major to biochem!
Great professor and the class was very well organized. Exams are very fair and follows exactly what's covered in class. Definitely a recommended class
Dr. Miesfeld is extremely fair and makes the lectures interesting while making the take home messages/info needed for the tests clear. Dr. Miesfeld is really nice and is clearly passionate about the subject.
I seriously don't know why everyone keeps saying that he's a good lecturer. As a 4th-year student who has had MANY upper div science courses, I could confidently say that Dr. Miesfeld is terrible at explaining concepts, so you need a strong science foundation prior to this class (esp BIOC384). Exams are beyond reasonable. Tons of XC. Easy A.
Definitely an enthusiastic teacher. Not super entertaining teacher or fantastic class, but decently good. Able to get an A if you study and attend class! 25 points of extra credit can be given
Dr. Miesfeld is among the most intelligent, well humored, kind, &charismatic professors I've had. He is a great professor; class is based off of power points he posts way in advance, exams are fair&based off old exams for the most part with variances in the questions but same concepts targeted. HW is good help &EC offered. Overall, one of the best.
Biochemistry is not an easy subject at all, but Dr. M's interest and enthusiasm made the lectures more entertaining. He was also very helpful in office hours. If you go to them, you will have a much better idea of what will be on the tests, which are difficult but manageable. If you do the extra credit, an A is definitely possible.
This is a pretty difficult class but Dr. Miesfeld is a cool guy and tries to keep lecture interesting. However, it is certainly not an easy A, or even an easy B, and the tests always seemed harder than the practice tests which were one of the only really effective ways to study. If you want an A in this class you have to spend a lot of time on it.
Dr. Miesfeld is a great professor. His exams are fair, and are similar to the practice exams that he gives. Go to lecture, take notes, and it's practically impossible not to get an A. Great class!
Dr. Miesfeld is enthusiastic about course material and makes difficult concepts interesting and relatable to everyday life. Overall wonderful professor! If you attend lecture, do the homework and extra credit, and study the lecture slides hard you will be successful!
Dr. Miesfeld is very helpful - he wants you to not only do well in his class, but also take important concepts away from it. Knows his stuff but doesn't condescend AT ALL. Biochemistry is not an easy subject, but this is a great class. The scoring and extra credit make a good grade VERY attainable with effort. Seriously, you've got to try to fail.
Dr. Miesfeld is a great professor!! I went into this class very worried about doing poorly but came out with an A. It takes a lot if studying but if you go to lecture and do the extra credit you will be successful
Pretty fun class. The content is extremely dull and tedious and there's far too much information in individual lectures; an entire pathway is covered in just one lecture! Dr. Miesfield is extremely helpful, though. I highly recommend this class.
Great teacher, awesome outside of class, too. He even took a cookie I offered him without thinking I was bribing or poisoning him. Haha. Clear in lectures, exams are very reflective of material, and though I personally didn't do well in the class, I've still learned a ton and don't regret taking it. Do the EC, and attend class, you'll do great.
Dr. Miesfeld is a good teacher and definitely is good at keeping the students engaged with new material. However, the approach was a bit too simplistic and easy. Definitely an easy A.
Best biochemistry class I've taken at the UA. Miesfeld is interesting & clear, tests are easy & fair, and I actually LIKED biochem after this. Online HW is easy, 3 tests (no final) and lots of extra credit if you go to class. Active learning can be dumb sometimes, but overall, the lectures are pretty good. Definitely recommend for biochem!
Good class with a challenging subject matter-- active learning exercises were fun and informative. Would like to see disease list for active narrowed down for each study session so that we can come to class prepared by doing prior research on a set of 10 diseases of which three would be discussed/quizzed on in the active learning for each session.
Left the class genuinely interested in metabolic biochemistry. The content on the last exam was very dry, but the first two exams covered very interesting material and Dr. Miesfield did a very good job of keeping lecture interesting. Would recommend him as a professor to friends. Interactive learning was a useless IMO, just studies lecture slides.
I loved this class! After taking numerous chemistry classes with horrible professors, I was so grateful that Dr. Miesfeld was an entertaining and approachable. I also really enjoyed the in-class case studies. They added a bit of fun to an otherwise boring section of the class.
he is a excellent teacher who does not make you to remember all the pathways, but more focus on the concept of how they regulate.I found this class is very interesting and useful. He really gives fair midterms and lots of extra credit(no final). I highly recommend his class.
AMAZING professor! He is funny and very well organized. He CLEARLY goes through lecture and tells you what is expected of you. Gives you exactly what you need in his text files and gives you tons of opportunity for extra credit!! He made this class a lot easier/more fun than most teachers would!
Presentation was well-done, and each lecture was significant to further learning. I found the active learning in the first half of the course to be helpful, but small groups of students tended to monopolize involvement in the second half of the course; the flashing slides and flipping back and forth was disorienting. Overall, a good course.
The active learning in the second half made the class feel more realistic for those wanting to be physicians. I would not flash back and forth between slides. It makes it hectic and individuals monopolize the group effort. Quizzes are not hard. Don't over think because oftentimes there is no answer. If anything, get a kick out of his laugh.
I wouldn't say an easy A. Exams were tough with few questions, and seemed to cover less critical concepts. Fantastic curriculum though. Covered a lot of great material and was interesting for a big lecture. Not a big fan of the interactive questions. Would recommend class to others. UA is lucky to have him. Great with students, a good role model.
Great Professor. He makes the class fun and interesting. Extra credit opportunities are awesome. As for the interactive learning- it was great to get in-class participation points but prefer a different form of interactive learning.
One of THE best science class I have ever taken at the U of A and as long as you attend class you're going to know what is important. The active learned helped me a lot because it put the concepts into real situations and gave good examples of how the concepts may be asked on a test. I'd minor in biochemistry if Miesfeld taught all BIOC classes lol
Was very interested in biochemistry before taking this class. Now that it is the end of the semester I feel like this class was a major let down. This semester the professor did "interactive learning" which was not very helpful. Biochemistry is a difficult topic and the interactive learning meant going home and teaching ourselves biochen, not fun.
This was one of my favorite classes at the UofA. There are many and difficult concepts, but this professor is clear and focuses on the bigger picture rather than the minor details. The extra credit was awesome and the exams were very fair as long as you went to class and looked over the text files available. I would recommend this class. I loved it
GREAT GREAT professor! He actually makesyou want to come to class and is very good at expaining the material. He also does not make his exams super hard even though the material is hard.
Good teacher, always seems enthusiastic and occasionally makes you laugh.
Great teacher! I really learned a lot and he uses active learning in class which is very useful. Overall, it was a super interesting class and he is one of the best professors I have had so far!
I definitely recommend Dr. Miesfeld over Dr. McEvoy. She subbed class a few times and wasn't nearly as good a lecturer. There is a LOT of extra credit in this class, and he is very generous in awarding A's in the class. That being said, you still need to study for his exams. They are not necessarily difficult, there is just a ton of material.
Dr. Miesfeld is an excellent instructor. He was very considerate about giving lots of extra credit (needed since this is a TOUGH course), but he was not always straight forward in his examinations. I felt that he sometimes tested us not on the material, but on how easily we could be tricked by wording. Gives old exams to study from.
Dr. Miesfeld is really fun to listen to in lecture. He also gives lots of opportunities for extra credit and basically tells you which questions will be on exams (modified and from a large pool, but at least you know what to study). Go to class! The course is pretty difficult, but the subject is biochemistry, so what else would you expect.
Class isn't too tough because there is enough extra credit to raise your grade almost 10%. Going to class counts as EC, along with two small readings and answering some questions. Four exams, all multiple choice. 8 online HW with 3 attempts. He goes through lectures quickly, but the text and powerpoints are well written if you need clairification.
Dr. Miesfeld's lectures are really interesting and there are lots of in-class questions that are helpful to reinforce the material. The tests are difficult but reading the lecture texts and studying the old exams helps. Homework and extra credit are easy points! The text is online rather than in an expensive text book which is a plus.
He gives a ton of extra credit. The tests were pretty easy for me. I did not like his lectures and hardly attended but was still able to get A's (even 100s) in his class. Easiest science course I have taken. There is a lot of material you are expected to learn though, and not enough of your knowledge is tested on the exams (14 multiple choice ?s)
Active learning in class is great. He goes too quick through lectures, so you have to study a lot on your own to understand the material, but go to class- it is extra credit. Tests are easy to do well if you know your stuff, if you don't you're in trouble. Tons of extra credit. Lots of preceptors, so it's easy to get help. Book is well written.
The class is out of 480 points and he gives up to 40 points extra credit, 2 extra credit assignments worth 10 points each, 5 points for doing the TCE evaluation and 15 for participation and attendance. It was really nice. The first exam was really easy but then they got progressively harder
Fantastic! Highly recommended.
Preceptors are your friends.
Dr. Miesfeld is amazing. Highly recommend his class. Tests are easy if you understand the material. Tons of extra credit. The material taught in the course is really interesting as well.
Dr. Miesfeld was incredible. I really enjoyed his class, he offered a lot of extra credit but his tests were difficult. Great class, but you have to work!
His exams are 12 multiple choice questions, and each question is 3-5 questions in one. So, be prepared to get almost an entire letter grade off of your exam is you don't know stuff. But, he is a good lecturer and his hwoldexamspowerpoints are useful! Lots of extra credit too!
Multiple choice exams were not straightforward as they should be. He engages in trickery. He needs to make all his exams 20 questions, instead of 12. Also, he usually puts 5 questions and makes it one problem. So, its either all right (10 points), or all wrong (0 points), instead of him giving you partial points for what is correct, very unfair!
The tests are tough, beware of those multi-selects and "none of the above". With all the extra credit, I was able to get an A after getting a 57 on one of the exams. So it's totally possible to redeem yourself! Lectures weren't half bad, so going to class really helped. Also, the textbook he wrote was very helpful.
The material is very dense so it can seem overwhelming but it's better to understand pathways rather than memorize. Preceptor reviews and d2l quizzes will let you know what's important for the tests. It was a bit frustrating that the tests only had 12 questions so a few wrong meant a huge deduction, but there was so much extra credit.
Loved going to class! Interestinghelpful lectures. Wish more professors wrote their own textbooks. Text was student-friendly, understandable, and related to the lectures. 8 HW, 4 exams (no cumulative final!), and 2 extra credit opportunities (plus attendance and TCE points). Preceptors very helpful! Study old exams. Difficult course, but worth it!
Miesfeld knows his biochem really well. His lectures can be dull, but you can get 15 pts extra credit for attendance. 4 tests, 8 homeworks, and 2 addtl extra credit assigments, so you can get a good grade in the class even if you don't do super well on the tests, which are multiple choice, but very few questions, so one missed is a lot of pts off.
loved this class! his enthusiasms for maintaining a great learning atmosphere encouraged me to never skip class. Straight forward lectures but fast and test questions can be tricky. Offers lots of extra credit and use those office hours! super helpful! this was first year of 400+ biochem class so needs some work but would take again.
This was his first semester teaching 384 (he usually does 385). His lectures are pretty dry, but he's excited about the subject. Offers 15 points of extra credit for attendance, as well as 1 or 2 other assignments for extra credit. Tests are short (25 questions), but pretty straightforward multiple choice questions. Overall a pretty good professor
Miesfeld is a pretty straight forward professor. He tells you what he expects you to know and what not to be super concerned with for exams. He gives extra credit so don't expect a curve.
Sadly I heard a lot of great things from this professor. He doesn't like to have his own office hours. Since he is the department head he has forgotten the little kids ambition to learn. Doesn't have time for his students which makes sense his job matters more. I just wish we had a great general biochem course. University of Texas please help...
Roger Miesfield is one the best Biochem Teacher at U of A. He is not only genius but very helpful. Biochem is an intense material, you need to study your ass off to get a good grade. The grade you get do not depend on teacher but you. If you study, you pass. All in one, if you want to take MCAT, do take biochem with Miesfield. You will learn a lot.
Miesfeld is a great teacher! Tests are difficult, but fair. It's a hard subject, but you can tell that Miesfeld really cares about the subject and his students. Lots of extra credit means that you can bomb at least one exam and still be okay.
Average difficulty, tests are based off the in class activities and old tests, study those and you'll be fine, do the extra credit cause you'll probs need it for the A but theres a lot
Dr Miesfeld is my favorite professor at UofA. He wrote his own lecture material so he is very knowledgable of the material. It can be an easy A if you go to the lectures, pay attention in class, study the slides and do the homework. Going to class is pretty entertaining, Dr Miesfeld tells corny jokes and you can even win a sweet magnet!
Great teacher. Great powerpoints that are based on a text book he co-authored. Accessible for hard material
This class is tough, but passable. 400/500 points are the exams. They're multiple choice, normally around 12-14 questions... Miss one and you're screwed. Go to class cuz there's extra credit just for attending. Only getting a C, but my exam average was a 60.5% so I can't complain.
I liked his class. It was tough, but very do-able. Showing up to class is key- there is a lot of extra credit to be had if you show up. Study hard for the tests and you can really do well. I was on the brink of an A/B at the end and at the end we spoke via email, and he really came through for me. I would recommend him for sure.
Dr. Miesfeld is a great professor. He is interesting and lectures are funny and engaging. The class is graded very fair--lots of opportunity for extra credit and participation to boost your grade. Completely doable to get an A if you do the work and study for exams.
Students in the class are creme of the crop and have all made if past gen chem and o chem without changing to a business major. Miesfeld probably recognizes this and gives a ton of extra credit since it's so competitive. Also he is a funny guy that loves biochemistry and loves active learning so he keeps you engaged. Also about 20-30% get an A.
I love misfiled. The class is really engaging and helpful. I would definitely take other biochem classes with him.
Misfiled, I love you!!! He is one of a great professor and very funny. I loved going to his class because his class is very engaging. Very doable class to get an A with lots of help and extra credits. I got 90s on all four exams, so I would say study and get an A. Must recommended class and a teacher.
He is one of the best professors I've had. His exams are based on the lectures and are easy to pass if you study. I am not good at studying hardcore but going to class and paying attention helps a lot because he is not trying to be tricky on the exams its either you know it or not. He also gives a lot of extra credit which is awesome!
This class was okay. I think Miesfeld has good intentions, but the material is taught in such a way that you have to connect a lot of the concepts yourself. He also talks really fast, and expects you to read his textbook, although it's not necessary to do well. Short tests which can be tricky, even if he claims he's not trying to trick you.
Miesfield does not know how to teach a class. All of his lecture notes come directly from his book (copied and pasted). He does give a little bit of extra credit so don't miss out on it. Each test is only 20 multiple choice questions so it is really hard to get a good grade. Overall, I learned nothing and he is a horrible teacher
Coming into this class, I thought the material was going to be pretty difficult, but I found that the material wasn't that bad and I did find it to be interesting. My background knowledge from MCB410 might've helped me a bit. Dr. Miesfeld tries to make the class entertaining - which he does - and has a teaching/testing style that's easy to grasp
Miesfeld is very to the point. The exam material comes directly from the slides, but he asks for understanding not memorization. He compensates for the difficulty of the exams by offering 30 points of extra credit, which can turn 70s on exams into 80s. Lastly, this guy is entertaining, he'll make you learn biochem the easy way or the hard way.
I do agree that Miesfeld was way too vague when it came to teaching material for what would be covered on the exam. The exams were could be tricky no matter how hard you studied. However extra credit really did help and the Final wasn't hard either. I think he would be better to take for 385. You definitely need to work hard for your grade.
He's been one of the best prof's I've had in the Chemistry/Biochemistry department at UA. Lecture is usually very useful and extra credit is given for attending class. Tests are fair, and he also gives other opportunities for extra credit outside attendance. He wrote the text too which is also super helpful.
This was his first time teaching this class by himself, and I think he had a little trouble with managing it. His tests were a little difficult, but he gives you a cover page with different pathways or numerical values which is helpful.
Miesfeld is the only choice usually for biochem so you kind of just have to suck it up. But, his lectures are incredibly boring and seem a little scattered. The material itself is just not that exciting. He gives nice homework and extra credit opportunities to boost your grade though.
His lectures are semi-interesting if you can keep up. I never can so I end up recording the lectures, and learning stuff after the fact. Hardest part is gauging what's on the test. Make sure to study lectures/hw questions/AND PRECEPTOR REVIEW - didn't study preceptor review slides on this last test and bombed (50) but I'll end up w/ an A somehow
Not a great professor - he relies a lot on you reading the book to supplement lectures (he wrote it, so they are very similar). Attendance is extra credit, which is super helpful. Exams are pretty straight forward, and the final in exam questions. Get ready to take extra time to learn everything, becaue you won't get it all in class,
I really enjoyed this class! The course is well-organized and the lecture (and extra credit) material is super interesting . There's a LOT of information to take in, especially during a summer course, but if you keep up with the modules every day it'll be fine. (online, summer)
Dr. Miesfeld has been one of my favorite professors at the U of A. He truly cares about his students and wants you to do well in his course. His book and lectures go hand in hand and though the exams are difficult, he gives plenty of extra credit to help you out. Would highly suggest the online section.
Hands down one of the best teachers (AND definitely the BEST chemistry teacher) I have had at the UofA! Dr. Miesfeld's online class is VERY organized and he wants you to succeed. Also, RLM is very quick with responding to emails and will always find a way to help whenever you ask for it. 10/10 MUST TAKE!
Dr. Miesfeld is the absolute best online instructor. It is rare to have a professor who is responsive, will work with you, and yet is straightforward with clear cut expectations so you know what you can count on. The class has a great mix of exams and assignments, which not only help your grade but also are actually helpful in learning the material
TAKE THE ONLINE COURSE. There's more work for it (weekly discussions) but it's so worth it for the open note exams. Listening to his voice threads for each topic isn't really optional and prepare yourself to spend quite a bit of your life working on this class. That being said, not having to actually study all the material is so worth the effort.
I took one biochem in person and one online, and I definitely recommend the online version. He goes super fast in lecture, and watching them online allows you to pause/rewind and understand the material. It's also incredibly nice to have the tests open book - make a thorough study guide based on lectures/discussions/homework and you'll do well!
I did not take the online version and it is super challenging. You have to read the textbook before coming to lecture to understand anything. The tests are 25 questions but very challenging. There are several quizzes online a week and weekly 10 question homework assignments that you have 3 attempts to do well. HARD HARD HARD, closed note tests
I would not recommend Miesfeld to anyone. Although he is not particularly difficult nor is the class necessarily hard, he is just such a poor lecturer. He does not do a good job conveying which concepts are important and which ones are not and he gets very distracted which makes focusing on the material difficult. Try and take any other professor.
I am a pre-med student and took the online BIOC385 class. His lectures are very applicable to Biochem as a whole and have really helped me with my other premed classes. Would definitely recommend for premed students.
I have never written a review before but I decided to go out of my way for this professor. He is so passionate and very easy going during lectures. He offers extra credit for attendance and his tests are NOT difficult at all if you prepare for them well. They are definitely fair for this level of course, just put the time in!
This class was one of my favorites! One of the best parts of this class is that Miesfeld records his lectures and posts them onto Panapto, making a great study tool! Extra credit was given for going to class and the lowest test grade was dropped which basically served as the "curve" for the class. He posts the last year's exams which are helpful!
Dr. Miesfeld GOAT
Great professor. I learned a lot. Majority of test questions are from previous year's exams and the preceptor review, but he does add a few new. One of the 5 tests (including final) are dropped and the final is just a list of questions from a quiz on d2l. Get 35 EC for showing up to class. Brought wrong final this year and everyone got 100% on it.
Honestly an amazing professor! I took the BIOC385 class online. The course is well structured overall, and the final exam is simple since you're given the questions before hand. In addition, he gave 65 extra credit points which changed my B to an A. I thought the class was interesting, you need to stay on top of your assignments though!
I took the BIOCHEM 384 course online. The class is very clearly laid out once you get the hang of it. There is definitely a work load every week and you have to stay on top of your assignment in order to continue doing well. Tests are proctored online. Very fair, tough course. 35 points EC, and straight forward final.
Summer 2020-Has you listen to lectures that accumulate up to 120 points total. Exams are a huge portion of the class, however, if you listen to the lectures and take notes it is doable. A lot of the questions from previous exams are post on quizlet if you type in bioc384. Overall, taking this class was very doable and not too difficult for Summer
RLM is such an awesome professor with very straight forward expectations for the class. Extremely easy to get an A in the class as long as you put in the effort. One dropped test (includes final) and final is from a pool of questions. I enjoyed his class so much I'm taking his BIOC385 course as well.
Nice guy, was helpful when I had an issue during an exam. However, he has different standards for his online and live online classes. Same class, but the online version had to use Examity. The "live" class had no proctoring at all and could use the internet during exams. Take the live online class. Textbook reading is a must, lectures are short.
I took the all online version of 384 and it was really easy. Grade was buffered a by a lot of homework, online quizzes, and discussion posts. Exams were very straight forward and, although proctored, they were easy to understand. The final exam was a pool of questions he gives you ahead of time. Learned a lot rom him and this class!
Love this guy! He recorded all his lectures in a studio so you watch them at your own time, he uses class for office hours (for Live Online section). Hes funny and is willing to extend HWs if you miss them. Content can be hard but the exams arent too bad, just take good notes and do the practice tests. Inspired me to get a biochem minor.
Professor Miesfeld is one of the best professors I've taken. He's so enthusatic and excited to teach that it makes you excited to learn. He's incredibly understanding and will help you out in any way he can. Lots of extra credit. The class itself is pretty easy; much easier online. Icredible lecturer.
Lectures are long and a LOT, but this class is virtually an easy A if you try. The professor is very nice and offered some extra credit. The material is hard, but if you do the homework and other assignments (and make a doc of them), you will be fine. Discussions were the most work for this class.
Amazing professor, very6 understanding and genuinely cares about his students.
Got a B average on exams and a 100% average on the homework, discussion, quizzes, and the PlayPosits. Ended up with an A in the course. Really easy course if you get ahead in the beginning and always stay ahead. DO NOT PROCRASTINATE. Use the extra time to study for the exams. Gives 5 pt and 35 pt extra credit, and I received both.
Great teacher! Favorite teacher I have had so far at UofA. Lectures are well thought-out, & has many tools to utilize in order to be successful. Take him if you can!
Dr. Miesfeld is one of the best undergraduate professors I have had. He has great recorded lectures you watch before class. Anyone complaining about him just didnt want to put in the work for this class. It is advanced Biochemistry so you should be prepared to study a lot. The extra opportunities are great.
Very different experience from organic. Material is still challenging, due dates are relentless, midterm exams are hard. However, an A is completely doable for most people. Its just the hardest easy A Ive had, which I think speaks to what a great educator he is. Work hard, develop a solid understanding, and youll be rewarded. Awesome approach.
Professor Miesfeld is a great teacher and very understanding. While the material can be tough, he provides many resources to help. He was one of my favorite professors I have had this far!
Bienvenidos, Wildcats. I took the summer introductory biochem course and it was an absolute mountain of work. That said, it's completely doable if you stay on top of it and don't procrastinate. Dr. Miesfield is willing to work with you if you put in the effort, and he is one of my favorite summer class profs I've ever taken.
Make sure you do not have any personal things going on in your life while taking him because he doesn't allow you to make up exams, even if you have COVID-19. I DO NOT RECOMMEND! He is the only professor that teaches biochem. He also makes $200,000 a year to be a subpar teacher. I'd rather go to a different uni for this class than have him again.
Honestly, goodluck to any future students out there. You have a better chance taking this class elsewhere.
Seems like a nice guy, but expects too much dedication for his class. Weekly lecture videos, D2L quizzes twice a week, homework questions due Sunday; even after that, you will not be prepared for exams, you will have to do further reading from his book. Material is way too complex to self teach, so I don't understand why he doesn't lecture himself.
Amazing professor. Cares about the student's success. It is biochemistry so of course it is going to be challenging, but if you attend the lectures, read the textbook readings, and do the homework, you will do fine on the exams.
Seems like a nice guy but his online lectures are hard to follow and do not relate to questions from quizzes and exams. I wish his lectures were more detailed and he slowed down to explain important take aways. He does not provide a study guide for exams so its hard to know what to study. All the exam averages have been Ds.
What a brutal class. This class alone requires a TON of work between lectures, mandatory readings (otherwise difficult to understand class), 4 assignments per week. This class convinced me to despise biochemistry as a whole. He forces you to buy his unhelpful textbook, and he's not flexible at all when life circumstances pop up (even emergencies).
This is biochem so it is very hard, but trust me when I say you want to take it with him. If you put in the effort to really really understand the concepts, you'll be fine. The exams are TOUGH but there is a lot of homework and extra credit to pad your exam scores. My biggest tip is to use the textbook a lot.
Amazing professor. Exams are all multiple choice and the answers are sometimes on the cheat sheet if you fully understand the material and understand the figures provided. A lot of people complain about this class for no reason especially with all the extra credit you only need to average a 75 on exams to get an A. Final was optional as well.
I heard mixed things about this class before I took it. I honestly liked it a lot and you don't really need to study much to do well. He gives plenty of extra credit and is very VERY clear on the grading criteria and how you should be doing to get the grade you want. I would love it if more courses adopted his course layout.
Dr. Miesfeld is super nice and cares about students doing well in his class. Exams are straightforward if you memorize the slides and homework/online lectures are an easy grade boost. There's also so much extra credit offered that your grade can jump by 5%. If you don't procrastinate studying/homework and do the extra credit, it's easy to get an A.
If taking the winter course DO NOT work, if that's not an option take another semester (8 hrs work/day). If you have enough time to study and do the extra credit (60 points) you should be able to pass with flying colors. The professor is caring and wants all students to do well. Video lectures, readings, hw, quizzes, & exams make up grade.
Dr. Miesfeld is a FANTASTIC professor. Lectures are concise and effectively convey what you need to know for the exams, and there is plenty of extra credit if you need it. Also, the textbook is very helpful. I'm an undergraduate at another institution, but Dr. Miesfeld is by far one of the best professors I've ever met. Take him if you can!
He is a decent guy and offers a TON of extra credit and practice problems. I am currently taking the hybrid version with lectures online and quizzes in person. I will say, however, that his teaching style is an acquired taste. If you dont understand the way he teaches, good luck. Only his lecture videos and a textbook he wrote himself are resources
This professor does't give exams correctly. If you miss 4 questions on an exam it's a 76%. He should consider partial credit on exams. He's a little overly proud of his book. His final is a question bank freebe so go wild. The final is the way to go, extra credit is offered. Not a bad man but very set in his ways. Bienvenidos wildcats.
Tough subject but interesting to me (vet med). Lectures seemed complex the 1st time around but became more digestible after becoming familiar with the material. Biggest challenge was having to know the details but also the bigger picture. That made it difficult to focus my studying, but thankfully, RLM was always accessible for questions.
Best online professor I have ever had. Very manageable and a great set up work load. He gives multiple attempts on all of his assignments so it is easy to get a 10/10 on assignments. He drops an exam and two of your lowest grades from every other section allowing you to continuously raise your grade. There is extra credit! Great communicator!
Awesome prof, one of the best I had in my four years here. You can tell he really cares and wants his students to succeed. Concepts are tough and a big workload for summer session, but doable. Highly recommend using the textbook. The chapter questions are a great way to study- used in exams often. Provides extra credit and drops some grades too.
You can tell he cares a lot about his students and wants to make sure they pass. Very understanding, by far the best prof I have ever had at u of a. Gives plenty of extra credit and lots of opportunities to pass. Would definitely recommend.
He is a nice guy but his online lectures are hard to follow, tons of questions from quizzes, homework and exams, overlapped 2 final exams. I wish his lectures were more detailed and he slowed down to explain important topics. Proctored exams and the students exam averages have been Cs. Be ready to work hard if taking this class on winter semester.
BIOC 384 with Miesfeld was a very structured course, you knew exactly what you had to do to get the grade you want. Most work is done outside of class, so be sure to understand it on your own! He offered a lot of extra credit, which most definitley helped my grade. The final is a pool of questions, very easy to memorize and do well on it!
Dr. Miesfeld is by far the best professor I have ever had!!! His lectures are so well structured and easy to follow. The material is hard, you will need to study, but he makes it easier by being so organized. I wish more professors were like him. Follow the exam study guides and you will do great. Highly recommend!!!
Dr. Miesfeld was honestly an okay professor. In-class lectures were mainly carried out by preceptors and most of your work will be done with outside lecture videos. Exams were easy. He does market his textbook a lot in class which gets pretty old, but his videos are more than sufficient to succeed in the course. Good luck
Dr. Miesfeld is one of the better profs I've had at the UofA. I had him for BIOC384 in the Fall of 2024. Great guy, loves teaching, and gives out a lot of extra credit. The class is mainly exams and they're not too hard to study for. Final is a question bank which can be dropped if you did well enough on the midterms. Good luck!
Dr.Miesfeld Class was very doable, his exams were pretty easy to study for! He also gives big extra credit opportunities! Do be aware your due dates for stuff are little odd being put on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays for all work. He also drops a couple of assignments as well as an exam!
Miesfeld is a nice prof and seems really excited to be teaching. It's an easy class, I never got a B on an exam and there's a ton of extra credit. CHEM24 is a prereq but there's very limited ochem content. Lectures can get kinda long but there are a lot of points outside exams to boost your grade. I took 384 and 385 with him and enjoyed both!
BEST BIOCHEM PROFESSOR! He is absolutely amazing. I took this class over the summer for 5 weeks and it was truly a good experience. The exams were not too bad if you just need a basic understanding. 2 assignments everyday could be a lot but if you manage your time well it's not a problem at all. Amazing professor and am planning on taking 385.
Heavy workload and difficult material, but Miesfeld is an amazing lecturer, makes it very straightforward. If you're taking both, do 384 before 385. Class is "flipped", free points for watching lectures beforehand and class time is his office hours, do the homework then and get more free points. Exams are very reasonable and he gives cheat sheets.
Took this course Fall of 2023. Dr. Miesfeld is one of the better professors at UofA. Sure the material might be challenging but if you put forth a semblance of effort, this is a pretty easy A. He gives out a ton of extra credit that's dependent on attendance so I'd suggest going to lecture. The coursework can be tedious but it'll pay off.
Class was boring, professor forgot how to teach. Bad class do not recommend.
Bienvenidos wildcats. This professor simply doesn't do anything in class. However, the class is free. Just don't attend, do videos, and take the exams.
Dr. Miesfeld runs a well-organized class with manageable workload. Exams are fair if you engage with the textbook and attend lectures. Unstuck study and other study tools can be helpful for prep. Overall, a good experience.
Reversed classroom scenario, he teaches nothing and relies on lengthy outdated videos. There is a quiz every class period (but you get three attempts). Some opportunity for extra credit. Most of the points come from exams, which are short. Missing a few exam questions can (and will) jeopardize your grade.
Took this Online offered course for the Fall semester. Material can be a bit challenging; lectures are videos (online; designated ppts) ...be sure to take notes. Use the textbook, hw isn't hard, realistic due date, working ahead=allowed. Some grades are dropped), up to 60pts extra credit. Final exam can be optional. Passing this class is NOT hard.
Flipped classroom style, with videos to watch outside of class. Reading the textbook isn't required but I found it helpful. Difficult content, but most exam questions come from Top Hat quizzes, D2L quizzes, preceptor reviews, and past exams. Requires a lot of time and effort to do well, but lots of opportunities for extra credit throughout.
This course was basically a marketing platform his mandatory textbook that he wrote and how his reversed classroom is the best. Fortunately, you don't have to go to class, just watch the videos and do the questions and your grade should easily fall within an A. Recommend to take him for the grade, not for the teaching. Best of luck.
Took both his courses for the biochem minor. Not a huge fan of the set up and didn't really learn much but very easy to do well in his classes based on his point system. Would recommend doing the extra credit, figuring out how he writes his exams and paying attention to the preceptors that are actually helpful. Suggest taking 385 over 384
Was told I could take this course instead of BIOC 384 for my major and that BIOC 384 is not a required prereq. However multiple times this year he has refused to go over something because it is taught in BIOC 384. Do not take this course if you have not taken BIOC 384. As someone who is an awful test taker I got a C pretty easily though.
I think both 385 and 384 were reasonably easy courses if you're efficient. Don't go to class, study for exams the night before and you should pretty easily get an A.
He's nice and all, but this semester was just kinda weird. He made the exams significantly more difficult than the previous semester, yet gave us materials from earlier semesters to prep with. I found his videos were outdated; sometimes he'd mentioned we didn't need to know something, then it would be on the exam. I was hoping to enjoy the class :(
I enjoyed Miesfeld as a professor and lecturer. He did make this class more difficult this semester (harder tests/less xc points), so it can be a lot of work but it is still possible to get an A. One of the tests gets dropped and there is an extra credit assignment.
I'm not a fan of the flipped classroom but his class is really enjoyable. Vids are really helpful and his practice tests/ quizzes are super helpful for studying. Funny guy, high energy. Solid class.
I was excited to take this course after reading reviews from previous semesters. The professor has since decided to increase the difficulty and decrease the amount of extra credit opportunities. I would recommend online from what I have heard. Exams are not necessarily difficult, they just did not match the level of difficulty of years past.
I wasn't the biggest fan of the layout of the course. It is considered an asynchronous class, but there will be assignments due almost every day. I didn't like the vibes the professor gave off in email correspondence either. Anytime I asked a science based question relating to a topic in the class, I got cc'd and forwarded to the TA.
this dude has made an already difficult class unnecessarily more difficult. he had way too much time on his hands over summer n decided to make videos for all his lectures. in class there's always 3 quizzes and you're given 7/8 minutes on them. he definitely knew students weren't coming to class. take it online if u can.
he doesn't know how to teach at all, don't take him
RLM has no place teaching an intro class. He has zero ability to land material with students who are not BIOChem majors, nor does he care to try. Moreover ALL the material comes from him (Text/Lectures). When approached for help his response is ask AI. Even AI cannot make sense of his evaluation criteria. Zero compassion!
Bioc is already hard and he makes it worse. Flipped classroom isn't helpful because he explains one thing in class then expects you to watch six 20-30min videos per week of his content lectures at home. 3 quizzes per class and limited time for each question that are often lengthy. He's made the class so much harder
I wish I could time travel back to organic chemistry or literally any other class rather than this class. It is by far the hardest college course I have taken in 4 years. He lectures for about 15-20 minutes a class and the rest is watching videos and learning on your own. At least you can still do bad on exams and get a decent grade overall.
The hardest class I have ever taken. I am genuinely studying 15+ hours for each test just to get a B. The tests do not cover the content they cover critical thinking skills. Each question on the test is designed to trick you. I feel like im in medical school with the amount of detail of each pathway this class goes into.
You will need to get about an 85% average on tests to get an A in this class. This is insane considering how hard the tests are. It seems like he got good reviews from previous semesters because he gave out more extra credit, but he completely changed that. The PHYS 141 class I'm taking this semester is easier than this class, and that says a lot.
I was really eager to learn BioChem when i signed up for this class, unfortunately this professor dives so deep into topics that he loses most of us and there is no framework provided to establish the building blocks (which is precisely what an Intro class should do) I am so disappointed that i spent hard earned money on this course.
I spent hours and hours reading the textbook and listening to lectures. The material simply did not make sense to me. Sure i picked up some concepts along the way but the vast majority of content was incomprehensible to a non-BioChem major. When approached for guidance he simply said to ask AI for help. What a waste of my time and money!
Lots of content that he barely covers in class, it's all on videos that aren't very helpful either. No point going to class, and he heavily encourages AI use, but AI doesn't even get how he's teaching this material. Tests are difficult and it's hard to see how he comes up with them with the given material. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU DONT HAVE TO
Easily the worst class i have ever taken. Professor has no interest in teaching, his lectures are simply a facility for him to feel important and sound technical. He has zero compassion for students and his exams are designed to entangle your understanding rather than reinforce it. Several classmates literally had breakdowns during this course.
I wish i never took this class, completely uninspiring and his objective is to confuse you and prop up himself. Really disappointing these guys exist in higher education.
He is so proud of his polished lectures and textbook that he co-wrote but has no capability helping students actually learn. He initially comes across as compassionate but it is just a facade, he doesn't care about you. You are simply a revenue stream for him.
You can study every single day and still fail his exams. As someone who has gotten straight A's in all biology and chemistry courses, these exams are the hardest I have ever taken. He does not care for his students and makes it impossible to feel successful no matter what you try.
Worst, least caring prof I've had at UA. He is so far gone from what it's like to be a student and has no desire to help you. I'm not paying thousands of dollars to be taught by AI. His exams are absurdly hard and only 25 questions. When I came to him with issues, completely dismissed. VERY disorganized w D2L and so lazy. Lecture is a waste of time
This was Professor Miesfeld's first semester of reorganizing his course. The class is hard. Any biochemistry class you take will be hard. I agree that his lectures are a bit redundant, especially with the class being flipped. If you can self-teach and put in the work, you will do just fine. I got A's on every exam, and extra credit is offered.
He is a passionate teacher about a complex topic. His classroom is almost fully reversed, but studying at home using textbook+AI to supplement lecture videos makes the course very manageable. It was not an easy class, but an A is very do-able. His tests are difficult/concept focused but entirely multiple choice. It is VERY easy to fall behind.
This course teaches you how to take a large amount of information and deduce the most important things. If you are taking the MCAT or want to learn how to answer complex questions in a short amount of time I would recommend it. If you just want an A don't take it. He restructured the course so now people actually have to learn, not a bad thing.
Do not look at anything before 2025. He has made the class harder by offering less extra credit and the final is no longer online. His averages are bad and then will say you are not studying hard enough. His tests are so hard and he does not prepare you for the type of questions. When I went to him for help he told me to ask ChatGPT.
Worst class ever. Exam average is bad and instead of seeing if it's a teaching error he sent out an announcement saying if we are reviewing lectures (videos and in person notes), doing practice questions and writing out the processes we still won't do well on his exams. Doesn't prepare you for his own exams
He is so bad at teaching and make the exams so hard. No matter how much I study I still don't do well on the exams. BIOC is a hard class in general but with his teaching and exam questions, it feels impossible.
This class was so extremely hard for no reason. Went into crazy amounts of depth for absolutely no purpose. This class is not relevant for the MCAT whatsoever. The exams are genuinely the hardest tests I have ever taken up to this point. Do not take this class unless you want to study for absurd amounts.
This was easily the worst class I've taken in all my years of college. I had to teach myself most of the material, and the amount I was expected to know was unreasonable. The professor's ineffective teaching made the course very challenging, and the real support came from the preceptors and from my own will and determination to get through it.
Adiós, Dr. Miesfeld. As someone who got an A, this man has lost it. Awful, uncohesive (flipped) lectures that leave you more confused than when you started. Lecture is an absolute farce and a waste of time. 4 MC exams with only 25 questions worth like 75% of your grade. Run far from this man and class, I plead you.
The lectures are good and I feel like I am learning biochem, but the tests are completely unfair. Most of the questions are about the most minor details, some of which are not covered. These were the hardest tests i've ever taken, and the sample tests from last year were infinitely easier. And exams are 75% of your grade.
Uses a flipped classroom so you have to teach yourself everything.
Marketing scheme for his textbook. Does not attempt to help students learn. Would rather work to confuse students and trick them on exams.
Does not teach since the class is "flipped". terrible professor with some of the hardest/ trickest exams ever. Do NOT take if you dont have to. If you are forced to take this class talk to the TAs! They are the best and will help you actually learn/ understand the material.
This is class is so difficult, there's like an exam every three weeks covering content of 200 slides. The test is multiple choice but it's extremely tricky since he ask about little details. This is by far my worst class and hardest. I failed almost all the exams and they are worth 75% of your grade. I spent so much time studying for the class.
Although I got an A in this class, I had to fight for it. 75% of your final grade is from four exams, and each exam only has 25 questions. He asks about the tiniest of details, so you have to know the content inside and out. He spends all of lecture promoting his textbook and AI programs.
The change from 2024 to 2025 was insane. His exams last year were significantly easier than 2025. It's impossible to learn to the level of detail needed for the exams. I went from aceing every science class to severely struggling in this one.
I would rather take both semesters of Organic Chemistry again than take this class. HIs lectures are not helpful and his learning objectives are not clear so it is nearly impossible to prepare for exams. He says "uhh" or "um" 6-7 times every sentence and makes you wonder if he knows what he is talking about. I do not recommend whatsoever.
DONT TAKE HIM!!!!! Go to Pima pleaseeeee. If you gotta take him take him online. He SUCKSSSSS. You see all these 🥷🏾 who got A's and they still talking stuff about him. o ok then. go ahead and choice another professor for the sake of your mental health.
This was genuinely one of the hardest classes I have ever taken in my life. Exams are worth at least 75% of your grade, and he completely changed the structure of the course, so exams from previous semesters are not so applicable. The only saving grace in this class was one of our preceptors, Devon Henry, who could teach better than Miesfeld.
You have probably seen other reviews, listen to them please. This course is easily the hardest I have taken and the material is not the reason. The professor does not care for the students at all! 25 questions on every exam and he makes them very very tricky. 75% of grade relies on exams. That should say enough. Don't take him, i fought for that A.
He wants you to use AI to teach you the material, which is weird because in the past most of my classes we're taught by the professor I signed up and paid for. His lecture videos don't cover the majority of the material he wants you to know, so must of us (that stayed in the class) just didn't watch them.Knowing the full textbook is the way to pass
This guy sucks. I dropped the class because they are many lectures outside of class you are expected to view. In the lectures, he does not explain content well. Every class has multiple quizzes and half of the questions do not relate to the lectures. I dropped before the first exam, but I heard they were really bad.
