He is a super guy but just gives us way too many details that we don't need to know. He teaches pretty much straight from the textbook, which is good and bad.
Dr. Moore is a super fun guy but he is very strict with the assignments. His exams seems simple and easy but i personally think it was harder than it seemed. however his class is fun cause of his experiments and how he makes mistakes! ^^ ha ha ha
He is way to smart and goes really fast through things. If good at physics his class is pretty interesting as he does lots of demos.
I don't think he is not at all a good prof in term of explaining things. Very boring class atmosphere, rather do something else. Mid term is not too bad, but final sucks........
HORRIBLE. He thinks he is teaching an advanced class. Very hard to follow, and his notes were completely useless for exams. He was sooooo boring, but I do give him credit for adding in interesting demos. I would recommend getting out of his class and finding another teacher.
The guy's British and you'd expect a Briton to weld the English language with a great deal of skill. I had a hard time figuring out what he meant on the exam question and he was no help in deciphering it.
Complete notes and very cheerful in class. Assignments and exams are very fair and sometimes very simple. He does test theory but the questions are not unreasonable. Spend more time practicing than studying and this almost becomes a fun course to take. Almost.
he was a terrible prof. He can't write exams, jumps from topic to topic, talks really fast, hard to follow
I thought he was fairly good at explaining things. But his tests were very hard. The midterm was okay, but the final was very difficult.
Prof is not very reasonable. talks too fast. notes don't help much when it comes to exams. super strict in marking exams. i would not recommend him
The exams were really damn hard, but we're curved so that's not too much of an issue. Great prof overall and I dig the accent.
wow, he was terrible...exams were too hard
He was terrible prof..If you print out his notes, you will realize that you are wasting papers. His exam was sooooooo hard and no idea what he was trying to test us.
Exams were more than unreasonably difficult. Expects his students to be at the intellectual level of someone with a PhD in physics. His exams had no similarity what so ever with his assignments, and it was very unclear what needed studying.
unclear, expects alot, hard tests, terribel prof.
Expect too much out of us, lots the math concepts from higher level of math which the majority of the class hasn't learnt yet, midterm exam was brutal, not to mention that ugly class average. Assignments are extremely tough. He speaks fairly fast in class, everyone gets so confused. However, he is very friendly if you need help outside class time
He's horrible, period. If you are not yet in his class, don't take it, for your own sake. If you are in his class currently, drop it, for your own sake. If it's too late to drop it, then may God be with you.
Sure the exams may be a little tough, but the class is curved. He's a very fair prof, explains things clearly in the class and if you go see him. Assignments can be done easily using the notes, and there are few complex calculations on the exams. Excellent prof in my books.
Usually explained concepts a little deeper (and thus over the heads of much of the class) than necessary, but kept it interesting. Assignments were not bad. The problem was the midterm and final were poorly assessed to match the 200-level class. Remember he apologized and curved it so a 45% became a B. Pretty fair and helpful/quirky in person.
His assignments were not that bad. However, his exams were killers. He's not as bad as some people say. Nice guy, just gives unfairly difficult exams.
Great class and really good prof. He really knows his stuff and he is very fair when it comes to marking and grades. People who don't like him or the class must not like physics. But if you like physics, TAKE THIS COURSE!!! You'll get out what you put it.
Stay as far away from this course as possible! This professor confuses students with excessive amount of powerpoint slides. In addition, he rarely does examples in lecture. I would not reccomend this course to anyone
I thought he'd worked out the "killer exam" streak, but the averages on the exams this term were still pretty low (50% on the midterm and 42% on the final)! Luckily he curves the class so that's not a concern. You *will* learn interesting material if he's teaching the class, especially if you have an interest in physics at all. Beware the PPTs...
He's a great prof. Gives the class a little bit of humor an brings in a lot of cool demos. His finals are easy if you take at least three hours each week to do the homework thoroughly.
Was a great prof all i have are good memories. hard exams but he is just such a great teacher so funny and full of energy. and always there to help you if you need it.
Overall an okay prof. He has good powerpoint slides which present the material really well so there is really no use for the textbook. He has excellent demos which make going to class worthwhile but he just didn't do enough examples in class.
Decent prof. Presents concepts clearly, but sometimes assumes students have more knowledge than they really do, given the prerequisites. Sometimes goes into more depth than necessary. Name is really cool though!
Midterm average: 36%; Final exam average was 40%. In a nutshell, his exams are extremely difficult. His notes suck as they tend to skip critical steps, so when you're reading then over, you get lost quite easily. He also assumes you're on the same level as him (Ph.D.-level). Overall, he wasn't that good. Assignments can be a ****, too...
AWESOME! Very helpful during office hours, has a sense of humor, has demos every single class making an 80min class much less torturous. Notes are organized well, gives lots of examples. Has tons of practice exams online (with answers!)which are really similar to the actual exams.
Classes were interesting. Would always stop to clarify if people had problems. Plenty of practice problems online.
This prof has a bad rep and I don't know why. He's very organized and concise and although his exams are on the tough side, you can tell he knows his stuff. He also spices up his lectures with demos and info from his work at the LHC, which is a bonus.
Though the 9am class could be a little dry, he was well organized and posted all notes online. The exams weren't that bad, but did have a couple tricky questions.
He is a very nice person. He assigns reading, and quizes online which they get quite annoying to do them. He loves to use powerpoints during his lecture which i find it useless becuase he's not showing everything. He just plays the slide and talks about it. He also uses the iclicker. exams were hard. class average was like 50%
Great prof. Really interested in what he's doing. Had some good jokes and great demos. Used the iClicker really well. recorded his lectures which was nice.
Very good prof. Gives well-organized lectures, makes good use of lecture notes and iClicker. If less than 60-65% of the class gets correct answer on an iClicker question, he will stop and explain. More emphasis on theory, but still need to know how to solve problems. Only complaint: using calculus concepts most 1st-year students hadn't learned.
Very enthusiastic about physics. Was very willing to explain concepts if the class didn't understand them. Tests were kinda hard at times, but shouldnt have been a problem if you understood the assignments.
he s good professor!!
There is so much material in this course, he can't cover everything in class, but his lectures are interesting, and he puts of alot of extra material online. Make use of the worked examples, and the textbook! He is a good prof, and the labs are easy.
A good professor, tries hard in lectures, although sometimes they are a bit dry. Makes good use of the iClicker, and those questions do engage you to pay more attention and think about stuff discussed. Homework assignments are great for review and staying on top of things. I felt some concepts are better explained in the book than by him, though.
Pretty good prof. Very helpful, considering the size of the class. The midterm was easy enough if you knew what you were doing, but the average on the last final was 43%, as it was far too long. He does shoot for a 50-60% average, but of course, the curve should even things out for you if you put in moderate effort.
Now turn to your neighbor and rate this prof.
Decent guy, not a good prof, although he try. His test and assignments were hard.
Lectures were an absolute waste of time due to his formatting. Assignments were brutally hard and short, yet held almost no course weight, and they were essentially the only practice we were given. Do not take this profs class if you enjoy physics. I had Grant for 144 and he made me excited for physics! Roger Moore extinguished that excitement.
Totally wasting a time. Assignment sucked so much time even though it weighed small portion of the course. Furthermore, the solution related to the assignment does not help you understand. Lecture is totally useless because only thing he does is just about to solve the problem and that's it! If you think you're genius, then take it.
He assumes that you know everything about math, and all he does in class is proving those formulas and gives you a result that you might never need to know. Assignment is aimless. After a whole term, I dont even know what I learned...
It's physics. So first years looking for a fast and easy time should maybe consider a really light arts option. You do have to work a bit for most things worth doing. If you come into university with an entertainment or spoon-feed mentality, also maybe consider avoiding the sciences. I also had Dr. Moore for PHYS 485 (into particle physics).
Yikes. The blended learning format that he used in this class was awkward (2-3 hours of pre-class videos of him blathering on about physics for each unit). Asked him for some resources for practice once and was practically shunned. Lectures a little frenzied, assignments short and difficult (not worth much though).
The class was set up ridiculously. 2-3 hours a week of the blandest pre-class videos, followed by 'lectures' that were just long problem sessions. The homework was fair, I got most of my learning from it as I could not learn well in that class structure. The tests were reasonable and he mercifully did an extra practice session before the final.
He just gave the hardest physics exam that I have ever seen. The final was so brutal, be careful.
Good Prof, explain the lecture very clear, had open office hour, but to be honest, I don't like his reading assignment which you have to take 1-2 hours to watch the video and do assignments, I prefer he taught these during the lecture. Lectures are designed for doing questions, exams are hard but he is easier mark for exams.
All he does is derive formulas and tell us we'll never actually have to derive a formula. All the actual teaching is done in video lessons that you're required to watch every weekend explaining more formula derivations. Classes are almost strictly him doing theory based questions with no quantitative examples (even though they make up the tests)
Lectures were mostly him talking about the theory with 1 or 2 practice questions at the end (not enough to be prepared for tutorials questions and exams). He talks very slow but sometimes mumbles. Reading assignments with video lectures took 1-2 hours to do each week.
The tutorials and reading assignments were quite hard as all he talks about in his lectures is theory and how do derive formulas (which you do not need to know). Sometimes, it is quite hard to understand what he is saying as he occasionally does not speak at a level a first year student understands.
Though the tutorials and reading assignments helped to some degree, I wish he focused more on worked examples and theory during class. He was pretty disorganised when budgeting time for his lectures since he probably finished a few lectures here and there. He also has lots of endearing qualities. He's really happy and laughs at his own jokes!
This was his first year teaching PHY130 and as expected there were some difficulties. But he's knowledgeable, caring and knows what he's talking about. Just make sure you read through his notes as they are helpful.
Amazing lectures and very helpful online lectures. Weekly assignments can be tough but really good practice. Speaks very clearly. Highly recommend.
Ridiculous exams. Practice material didn't sufficiently prepare you for the tests, and pre-lecture videos were very long and not particularly helpful. Lectures were dull nine times out of ten. Roger's a nice guy and I think he cares about his students, but his course has a long way to go.
Not a good prof at all! all he discusses in class is derivatives and doesn't explain theories because he expects you to know everything.
if youre a first year, try to avoid roger moore if you want a good grade. he does weekly videos talking about derivations which are far above our scope of knowledge. his weekly quizzes are incredibly hard and you dont do any real practice in class, he does too many derivations instead of really explaining the concepts. read the textbook to clarify
Weekly videos and readings are useful in explaining concepts and are a nice alternative (in some cases) to large amounts of textbook readings. The assignments/quizzes that accompany the concepts every week range in difficulty. Be sure to put in time to understand the concepts as it was easy to feel unprepared for exams.
Roger Moore is by far the worst prof I have had this year. He derives formulas we do not need to know to derive, he doesn't emphasize on important material and the textbook he made is not helpful at all. If you can, don't take his class.
I didn't learn anything in class. At least I have the textbook... wait, the textbook is just as bad as what he teaches in class. Okay, I guess I'll just learn this material on my own... :( At least he's a nice guy.
My main problem with roger is that he makes the course far more complicated than it really is. He spends half of his classes deriving the formulas we use and because its an intro physics course nobody understands his derivations. He aims for the average on his exams to be around 50%, but the course is curved so it doesn't really matter.
Roger is a nice guy but he cant teach a class properly. He wasted so much time on uselesss derivations that what we actually needed to know was skimmed through, and overall he left us ill prepared for the final exam due to his poor teaching style.
His lectures are needlessly complicated, and most of the time is spent working through derivations without appropriate foundational knowledge having been provided. As such, lectures were pretty unhelpful, and the tests really didn't reflect the assignment material well.
Students keep complaining about his way of teaching all the time and yet the department is not doing anything about it. HE IS TERRIBLE!. I was forced to take his class last semester because it was the only one that fit my schedule and it did not go well. you should change your whole schedule if you have to just so you can avoid him.
Roger Moore: living meme. He's a great prof, but also a great guy. His textbook is exceptional, glad he gave everyone a copy. Surprised he doesn't have more subscribers on YouTube. His videos are so good, I sometimes catch myself watching them in my spare time. You'll have a lifetime of regret if you pass up your chance on taking him for PHYS 130.
The mans a legend. One of the best profs Ive ever had. His tutorial videos are not only helpful, but inspirational. He really shows like he wants to be there and teach. Dont pass up the chance to take him as your prof.
With Roger Moore there will be weekly assignments based off of online videos and readings from the textbook. It may seem annoying but it they aren't very long or difficult, and they prepare you really well for the week of lectures to come. He is very enthusiastic about the material and gives you every opportunity to succeed with some effort.
This man became a meme in my year. He knows what he's talking about. However, his teaching style is not for everyone. At a certain point in the semester, after going to his lectures and attempting his online tutorials (assignments), I realized I had no idea what was going on. I suggest reading the Haliday textbook while learning the material.
he is a good scholar but i personally think he cannot figure out how do solve the question so we need to spend a lot of time to read the pdf in eclass
Great prof. Passionate about physics and extremely knowledgeable about the course material. Spends a somewhat unnecessary amount of time on derivations, but explains concepts well and enthusiastically.
Roger Moore puts a lot of time and effort into structuring the class. Unfortunately, he seems to emphasize the content that is most interesting to him rather than what's emphasized on the syllabus.
After the semester, I finally find out that its totally useless to go to his class, I would rather spending those time reading books and learning by myself. Go to his class won't help you do your homework or test.
Roger Moore is a very nice prof and very helpful when you ask him questions. He seems to give it his all in lectures, but they are needlessly complicated and monotonous. He always loses me when he does his derivations, and it doesnt help that he wrote the physics book too, because that book made me depressed because of how complicated it is...
The guy is very passionate about physics and enjoys teaching it. He gives his 100% in lectures but makes them very complicated with derivations which we don't even need for this course. His slides are very informative and the included problems helped me a lot during my midterm and final exam prep.
Happy Halloween
He is very blunt and may throw hands if you ask a dumb question. Is passionate about the subject. Sometimes forgets that students are experts like he is. Lectures are very boring and he spends way too much time deriving equations in which the derivations are never used. The textbook is a good summary of lectures.
Very useless lectures that do not help at all with the exams. Gives us the general principle and nothing else.
Roger Moore is obviously passionate about physics but he fails to understand that his students aren't also physics professors so when he does a 30 minute derivation of a formula it is not helpful at all. Lectures are useless and don't help you prepare for exams, same with his textbook. Does not do enough practice problems in class.
Boo this man! he should stop teaching
Roger Moore's video lectures and his textbook are useless and have nothing to do with exams. I hope one day he will read this and realize that his students are not physics professors. However, every first-year engineering student has to watch his video, you have no choice.
Very talented guy, I think he worked with Stephan Hawkings. Not a good professor though, complicates things.
This man is a legend but unfortunately, he is an extremely bad professor for this course. Lecture time is wasted doing irrelevant activities and the textbook won't help you out at all. Your best bet is to pray to a higher power while doing assignments and memorize every question on the practice exam. 1/5 but he is a nice man who is really smart.
Professor Moore remains as an absolute legend in my heart. His lectures definitely brightened up the bleak days during COVID lockdown engineering in the stinky Schaffer hall. The guy is a legend and everyone saying he isn't needs to "get gud" as all you gamers say it.
Funny dude, cares about physics, heavy on derivations that aren't needed which can make things confusing. But if you ignore the heavy derivations, and focus on the actual content the class isn't terrible. Overall ok prof.
Not in his class, but just wanted to say that his textbook sucks. Not helpful at all. I'm in Wheelock's class and she's a good prof, but his textbook was assigned for the course, and in it he does tons of useless derivations and weird applications no one cares about.
Been watching his online lectures which helped me out a ton with my class. Heard he passed, RIP a real one. ( I don't even go here )
