A great guy, he explains things step-by-step, making it easy to follow along in lecture, he throws in some funny nerdy jokes. He makes himself really accessible to his students, personally leading study sessions before tests.
I CANNOT believe that someone actually labelled Prof. Purves as hot!! He is a sweet old guy, but definitely NOT HOT!
He explains concepts sooooooooooooooo slowly (a bad thing)
Although the class goes by really slow, Purves is a great guy - he's always smiling and cheerful. He explains concepts thoroughly (maybe a bit too much though).
Purves is the man. He knows what he is talking about.
He really spells things out for you during lecture, and is a very clear lecturer. However, his tests are really hard and are often much harder than the material he lectures on. To balance that out though, he sets a fairly generous curve.
he was a big time FB. **** this guy
Incoherent, inefficient, boring. A decent teacher could teach the same amount of material in half a semester.
His lectures were incredibly boring. He tended to ramble and go over easy topics at a painfully slow pace. Though the material was pretty easy, his exams were much harder than hw and quizzes, with tricky questions and subjective grading. boo. Though he's friendly, I feel like I wasted a semester
Awful professor. Lectures, homework, and quizzes do not reflect the difficulty of the midterms and the final at all. Unless you have background in Statistics, try to avoid him.
He's not a horrible professor compared to some other stats professor but he just gives difficult problems on the exams and quizzes. He is very stubborn about changing your grade and can be irrational on grading. It's a difficult class so tons of studying is required to do well in this class.
bad professor, very slow, taught topics that were not covered in the textbook, midterms and finals do not follow hw and quizzes. bad explainer, tried to get help but was turned away by him and my gsi.
boring teacher, tries to be funny at times, not very friendly outside of class. but if you just do the hw and go over previous exam problems, it shouldn't be too difficult to get an A-.
Very easygoing and cheerful lecturer, but with a painfully slow teaching pace. Poor penmanship is hard to read. Homework and practice problems don't reflect the actual difficulty of the exams. Course is difficult and requires lots of studying.
Very cute man, I enjoy his sense of humor. He explains the material very well, and in an easy going manner
freaking boring class. horrible handwriting. tries to be funny. quizes do not reflect the HWs. unclear lectures
I liked the way he explained things, but he moved a bit too slow. When we got to continuous things, he rushed through and we didn't really understand. He is a generous grader though, giving 1/3 A's, 1/3 B's and 1/3 C's.
The final is so damn hard!
The final worths too much (50%), so you should be careful even if you do GREAT in the midterms (two midterms together only worth 30%). Good for people who tend to study harder in final than midterms, though. He gives about 20% A for this class.
Easy course. Was able to get good grade without really going to lecture. He has a very slow pace so it's easy to lose concentration. Good thing he wrote the book himself so everything is in there. Okay course
Funny man. Lectures go at a very slow pace and it's easy to lose interest. Material comes straight from the book and you don't have to attend lecture to do well on his tests.

very boring and bland. He makes lecture and the book much easier than his actual tests that's worth a huge chunk of ur grade.
Purves is a smart dude and he makes jokes like your grandpa does. The class is boring and when you are done you didnt learn anything that will help you in life or in other classes. But thats too bad since your major requires this clsss- you have no choice in the matter. Textbook mirrors letures exactly. I hate to slam such a nice guy but...
This class should be called Stats for preschoolers.
The actual quizzes are unexpectedly difficult! Ridiculous! He is funny, but he is "evil" when designing the test materials!
his quizzes are moderate, his tests are, wtf?
if u can avoid it by all means do not take this class w/purves, especially if u think u want an a. lectures & quizzes have u thinking that this class is for 12 yr olds. his teaching does not in any way prepare u for the suicidal thought inducing disasters that are his tests. i'd be surprised if half the class got over a 60% on the midterm. beware
Stay as far away for Stats 21 and Prof. Purves as possible! The concepts presented in class are ridicuously easy, as is the homework, leaving one feeling prepared for the tests, midterms and finals. Beware!! You are in no way prepared for the nonsense Purves will unleash on the quizzes, midterms, and finals!
i maybe went to 2 lectures during the entire semester.. and aced all the quizzes and tests. all you have to do is take his practice exams he gives right before tests and skim the sections quizzes are on in order to get an a. hes a sweet little man but i dont really go to class just to listen to sweet little jokes and ramblings.
I agree with the comment before mine that Purves's lectures are useless. Quizzes are ok. However I completely disagree about the easiness of tests. Everyone I know agrees with me in the fact that nothing Purves lectures on or his textbook prepares you for his midterms and final. His practice exams are about 10 times easier than the actual exams.
Impressively nice guy who is very approachable and generous with his time. Lectures are usually rather basic and a waste. Quizzes are challenging, and tests are very difficult. I found the class to be harder than Calculus 16B, just because it was so difficult to prepare for the exams. He said he shoots for 20% A's, 30% B's, which helps.
Too much on the final. Also, there were not enough time on two mid terms.(about 50 mins per 15 questions)
Really hard subject matter, but Purves is an amazing teacher, he helped out alot and helped you connect what you were learning in class with real world examples. Hard tests
OMG! Avoid taking Stats 21 with Purves. Try to find another prof. He's a really nice guy and lectures are simple; but he'll kill you on midterms and final. I guess the quizzes weren't that bad, but it doesn't really matter since the final is 50% of your grade. Extremeley tricky professor (he does it on purpose too).
if you can, avoid taking stat 21 with purves. as many others have said, he's a sweet guy but his tests are ridiculous.examples in class are in no way a reflection of exam material. quizzes are fairly reasonable, the key is to not fail the 50% final.
I can see how people found this class difficult. Take the adjunct course offered at the SLC student learning center and you should not have a problem getting an A or atleast a B. What he goes over in lecture is the surface of what he expects you to know, which is why you really need someone to help challenge you with the tricky questions.
The organization is lacking, the lectures are absolutely useless, and my GSI was horrible. I feel less comfortable with Statistics after having taken this class. Additionally, it is difficult to know how you’re doing in the class; I was well above the Median on both midterms, yet I still got a B. Disappointed would be an understatement.
Lovely old man, but lectures move painfully slowly. Class covers easy material, and everything is in the textbook.
All-in-all the worst professor i've had at berkeley yet. His lectures cover little of what is on exams, and my GSI didn't speak english. The material covered in lecture/discussion is easy, but the exams are ridiculous. I'm an A student and barely managed a B- !
I never really hated math until I had this guy. Lectures are USELESS as they in no way reflect the material on the tests. All the information is in the book and he asks some incredibly subjective questions on his exams. In addition, his tests are harshly graded (even getting one question wrong will definitely knock your grade down). AVOID!!!
This dude is a magician. He's better than Davis Blaine! Seriously, he tricks you into thinking the class is easier than kindergarden...but then POOF! He's busts out the midterms and final and confuses you with his crazy problems! Avoid his class!
Purves was a great teacher. As he is the co-author of the textbook there was no variation and the text was so simple. Just read and you're set. I liked how organized the lectures were. I went to office hours once and he was really good at explaining the problem.
I can understand why there are so many negative comments here. Considering the subject matter, Purves is one of the best teachers that I've ever had. Make sure you go to his problem solving sessions before the tests, understand how to do the practice problems.
boring. boring. boring.
Purves is like the prior comment said....a magician. The book is the easiest thing i've seen since algebra. The tests are WTF hard and in no way what so ever represent the material. I had a 3.8 going into his class and I barely got a C- in his class. Do not by any means take this class, take your chances with ANYONE else. The worst teacher at cal!
DO NOT TAKE STAT 21 with purves...especially if you've never taken stat before or if you're haas intended. his quizzes and lectures are pretty easy but his exams are WTF...i'm a straight-A student and i struggled to get a C+ this semester...horrible professor, stay away!!!
I enjoyed going to lectures, but the midterms and final were much harder than the homework or quizzes. When he said the material was hard at the beginning of the semester, I should have taken it to heart. Study hard if you're taking the class.
As long as you read the book, go to the discussions, and know how to do the midterm and final practice problems, you'll be fine. Don't listen to those people who say the class is hard. The curve will help you, 20% of the students get A's, 30% get B's.
Purves's midterms and finals were too hard and ambiguous. It is very hard to study for his class. It seems easy at first but his tests are decieving and require alot of intelligence. His grading is especially tough.
He was very clear and taught relatively well, but his tests are the hardest thing ever and his grading is completely ambiguous. You have no way of estimating what you will get in his class because of his curve and lack of willingness to talk about your grade. Like I said, his tests are HARD so you better know the information inside and out.
I found him to be entertaining in lectures and he was fairly organized, but on the tests he expects you to put ALL concepts together regardless of how many of the topics were thoroughly covered, which makes the tests difficult.
Dont need to go to class to get A. just know algebra. professor is trying to help a lot though, gives out money for free.
never take this class with purves. he is super old super bad and he deserve to just retired! NEVER! NEVER TAKE THIS CLASS
His tests might be tougher than others, but that is no excuse to complain, cuz he gives you ample preparation by giving you 50 (50!!!) extremely useful practice problems before tests. Great book, very willing to help. People who complain abt him are probably business majors needing an easy A. If you want a rewarding challenge, take Purves.
He lectures straight from the book with straightforward examples so you don't have to go to class. But tests = HARD. There will always be a question unbelievably twisted; going to office hours will make you understand only for the period of time you're there. Nevertheless, Purves is a brilliant teacher who KNOWS his subject.
Tests very, very tricky, and in lectures you never know what points he's trying to make (but you have to know them well for the tests). Try to get someone else unless unavoidable (Adhikari is a great prof). I will never forget the box model..
Lectures aren't helpful for exams. Exams had at least one tricky problem and really made sure you understood the concepts. Make sure to do the bunch of problems he gives and do the discussion section problems. curve is great.
I took Stat 21 with him and he made me really like Stats!!
If you have taken Stats before this class will probably be easy for you, but the way Purves teaches will be annoying. If you have never taken Stats before his method will make sense to you, but the tests will be pretty hard for you.
If you've never taken stats before, you have to work extremely hard in this class. The class work is easy but since it's a weeder class the tests are incredibly complicated and hard. Major stress from this class if you're taking it for a letter grade.
I went into this class not knowing a thing about statistics. BIG mistake. His lectures and quizzes will trick you into thinking you understand all the material, but you'll be fooling yourself if you do. His midterms and finals will murder you lest you know all the tricks in the book. They are by no means straightforward...do you want an A? don't ta
Easy lectures, super easy quizzes. aced all the quizzes but midterms and final are super super hard. I had no background in stats, so i suffered in the course. squeaked by with C+ even though I've studied for his tests for days. past test reviews were easy, but barely any help. tests are unbelievably difficult. DONT TAKE STATS WITH PURVES!!!!
I hadn't taken stats prior to this class, but if you go to all the lectures/discussions and pay attention, it's not that bad. Tests are harder than homework but they are possible once you figure out what point he's trying to make sure you understand. Overall, not as difficult as people hype it up to be.
Lectures are pretty much useless. I went to a few of them but they didn't help. The rest of the time I just read the book, did the optional exercise sets, and did the practice midterm & final questions before each test. Section & office hours can be helpful if you follow along. His review sessions help too. Easy enough if you can teach yourself
He's ridiculously nice... but beware: this is a weeder class for Haas wannabes. If you don't absolutely have to take stat with Purves, DON'T! Read: TAKE THE OTHER GUY. Why? Just read below. And don't say you weren't warned...
He's a nice guy. His quizzes and MT's are alright and can get the score in the 80th %ille. But on the final he had me going WTF is that and where did he pull it out.
Well his lectures just implement in your head the same exaples and ideas from his book, as he is one of the authors, the quiz are easy and so is the hw (which u dont even have to turn in) ....but when the test comes it's a low blow, dont procrastinate, if u do just like i do dont take it with purves!
Nice guy, very friendly and really tries to teach the conceptual aspects of Stats. However, his quizzes and homeworks are all fairly simple until you get to the midterms. He likes to throw curves balls and while they're not that difficult, you frustrate yourself; but when you get it right you'll feel so satisfied. Not the easiest professor.......
Really nice guy; very approachable; willing to re-grade tests if you were miss graded, or can argue your work well; not easy, but if you go to section regularly and lecture at least every so often, do homework, go to office hrs, you can get an A; tests are tricky, but read questions carefully and practice LOTS before hand and you;ll do fine.
People made me so nervous to take Stats with Purves! But seriously, he is really nice and funny, and the tests arn't that hard. You just really have to read. Actually, you just need to read the boxed parts in the chapters. And go to lecture. On the final there was a question that asked for a definition given in lecture, not the book.
This class is known for the absurd bell curve. The material is not that hard, but be aware that all business students come through this class, and a lot of students get bad grades not because of the material/tests, but because of the competition in the course. I would recommend taking another course if you can.
There's a reason this class is the toughest class at Berkeley Based on GPA data from Veechi Classes, only one class is harder GPA wise! The average GPA for a student taking this class is 2.58! I did well enough on the 2 midterms(A-/B+), but the final(worth 50 percent) is the only thing that matters and is incredibly difficult Expect hellifenrolled
He makes statistics hard. Instead of formatted like a math textbook, book is almost a novel describing histograms, which makes it unnecessarily hard. Also can't really teach very well. He wrote the textbook, so no variety in teaching style... Would not recommend him for stats.
DO NOT TAKE PURVES FOR STAT 21.THERE ARE OTHER WAYS TO TAKE STATS FOR HASS/ECON. DOING IT ONLINE OR OVER THE SUMMER ENSURES MUCH HIGHER RESULTS...THIS MAN IS RIDICULOUS, EVERY PROBLEM ON HIS TESTS AND FINAL ARE SOMETHING YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN.DO NOT EXPECT TO DO WELL IN THIS COURSE JUST BECAUSE YOU ACED YOUR AP EXAM IN HIGH SCHOOL LIKE THE REST OF US
I took AP Stats and got a 5 and only took this class to fulfill Haas requirement-thought it would be a breeze-WRONG. The book and methods will be absurd to anyone who took AP and will most likely annoy you. The prof is okay, but class is awful. He makes the material seem easy, but then the midterms/final are HORRIBLE. Take 21 only if you HAVE to!!
This class is just downright deceiving. You take the quizzes, do the problems in the book, and you seem to grasp the material. I understand that part of the class is to apply knowledge and principles to problems you haven't seen before, but given the time constraints, good luck. All I can say is... ouch.
I expected this class to be hard, so I studied intensively for a week before each exam. Memorize as much of the book as possible, and pay VERY close attention to the details in the questions he asks on the tests. The points you get for carefully answering the questions can improve your score significantly on the midterms and the final.
Professor Purves is terrible. His tests are unrepresentative of what appears in the book and lectures, which makes tests nearly impossible to prepare for. The textbook reads like a childrens book and the lectures are useless. It is criminal that they let this guy teach at Berkeley.
Class instruction is easy to follow, but the exams are incredibly more advanced than anything done in class.
His textbook is clear and concise, which is very unlike that of his teaching. The lectures tend to be unhelpful in terms of teaching, but are essential in terms of learning what will be tested. Make sure you do all the practice midterms and problem sets provided for you, and know your concepts inside out! somehow got an A. Not Recommended.
Purves is a good teacher. I have to agree that his exams are difficult, but they're not unreasonable. I never read the book (only used it to do problem sets), only went to lecture, and managed to do well in this class. Just relied on the notes from lecture.
On one hand Purves is a cute old man, on the other he's deathly boring. Fell asleep every class so I stopped going. You can learn everything from the book, which is written by him and is very clear. The tests are really hard, however, and hw is graded harshly as well. You need to make sure you keep up.
STAY AWAY!!!!!!!!! This class is horrible. Hw is easy and the midterms are incredibly hard and have nothing you've seen before. You have to know the concepts inside and out. You have no time to think on the tests either in just 50 mins. You just write. It's horrible and the GSIs are not helpful they're rude. Lectures are so boring too!!!!!!
I took the class fall of freshman year with no prior stat experience. The professor is very clear albeit a bit boring. Try to get full scores on the homework, and memorize the textboxes in the book. Try to get at least a few points above average on both midterms, although one standard deviation above average is ideal. The curve of 20% A's helps.
Talk to your counselor and find another way to take this class. I was a transfer from another UC and after taking both lower div and upper div stats with an A, I got a really low grade in this class. Just don't do it, you can find another way to take statistics.
BE CAREFEUL.. attendance not mandatory, hw very easy BUT, midterms nothing at all like hw. very very difficult. HOWEVER, gives tons of practice problems from past midterms. holds review sessions 4 each midterm. MUST go 2 those to do well. final even harder than midterm! oh yea, and he wrote the book. my advice is avoid if possible.
AVOID taking him!he is a very nice and funny man BUT his tests are really hard!he tricks you with the problems in the book and the problems sets. The sections dont help at all esp.if you have Anna. Make sure to go to the review session, you need lots and lots of practice for this class b/c you will have only 50 minutes to finish your midterm.
Purves should have retired years ago. His lectures have nowhere near the clarity of his textbook, which will be your best friend in this class. My GSI barely spoke English. Be prepared for HARD questions on the midterms and finals-at least as bad as the tougher problems on the review packets (pretty much the only thing this class does right)
Do and re-do the practice midterms so you know the format of the q's. SLC wkshts very helpful. The final is harder to prepare for since the questions are pretty unique. Though I'd say if you do enough practice final&midterm qs/SLC wkshts then you will do above average in final -avg was 46/100 for my class so don't be too intimated when you take it.
Contrary to popular beliefs, I found Purves to be a pretty good instructor for Stat 134. He is organized and explains concepts clearly. Almost never uses the textbook throughout the semester. The first 4 weeks are very easy if you have some mathematical maturity, but it gets harder. Final was overly difficulty though and the curve was too harsh.
I thought the test would be easy since his lectures were clear and relatively easy to understand. As other people said, solve and re-solve past midterms. Tests are not that easy. Cute old man
Very clear professor, explains everything thoroughly. However, extremely hard midterms and final. There was only one midterm and the final was 50% so if you flunked anyone, your grade was in the drain. Only gives our 10% A's and 10% A's, with the other 80% BCDF's. I received an A after studying nonstop like a madman for 15 days in a row.....
Very intuitive. He doesn't shove a bunch of formulas down your throat. I had stat 21 with him too. His midterms and finals are hard. Barely ever uses the book. I should've done what the previous poster did - studied like a madman for 15 days instead of 5. Ended up with an A-. One of the better professors in berkeley.
Before this class, I was considering being a statistics major. I loved statistics. Purves ruined it for me. He wrote his own book and uses things that are not actually used in the statistics realm (he also hates the p-value). I got a 4 on AP Statistics and was well prepared for statistics. I attended every lecture and discussion, as well as OHs.
Absolutely delightful lecturer, especially for statistics. This guy knows HOW to teach, and is very grounded, but midterm and final is substantially more difficult than lecture examples and problem sets. Book (he wrote it) breaks things down clearly and is very useful.
Easy. But so boring that I would have rather had a really difficult class. Purves's lectures are roundabout, inefficient, and so slowly paced that skipping lecture to read the book Purves wrote (which he did nothing but repeat in class) was far more productive than attending lecture.
