His tests have little to do with what he says in lecture. I think this guy is from outer space.
He lectures are very disorganized. Doesn't bring notes to class, starts lecturing and talks right off th top of his head. Unless you are able to read hieroglyphics, do not attempt to read his notes on the board.
I had to drop his class. I would not recommend him at all. I don't think he really cares about the students he is just in it for the money. I don't know how he passed Biology in college b/c I don't think he even understands it!
Ummm, this teacher is just weird. His lecturing is scary. His writing is some form of ancient text. He's hard to understand. I wouldn't have passed his class w/out doin' the extra credit...which he withheld this information from me! Do NOT TAKE!
not as bad as everyone makes him out to be. i made bs on all of his tests and i started to study the week of the test. he's kind of goofy and makes inane jokes throughout class. his handwriting really does suck though...
Okay, it depends not on this professor but on the student's need for that class. 'Course if you're taking cell bio then you must really need bio. Open your mind, pay attn, THNK. Don't expect that any biology class shld be easy. Laziness does not apply.

He's not bad really. He knows his stuff.
RUN RUN AND run while u still can! He tries 2 help u, but still if science or Biology is not your first language, I suggest that you take something easier like Geography or Geology. But if you can't, because of your requirements for your major. gl.
I made As in this class and I didn't buy the book. Take every drawing and note down from the board that he puts up there. If you can't read it (and some of it you won't) ask him to clarify, he will. Maybe I just understood him. I would take him again.
Can be nice, but sometimes it's like he doesn't know there's a world beyond his own bubble. Doesn't do a good job of prioritizing Q's after class. You could have a simple Q and he may be explaning about cancer to someone else for 10 or so minutes.
he is very passionate about his job, and knows his stuff, but i think that he dont realize that you dont know this stuff. test are very hard and his notes on the board if you dont like science then dont take this class.
He's terrible
Yes...RUN while u can!! He is TERRIBLE! He knows what hes talking about and loves to help...but just cant, his handwriting is horrible, half of the notes have NOTHING to do with the tests...if it wasnt for all the extra credit he gives, i would be failing. Plus he wears the same oufit everyday.
You MUST go to class every day to do well!He really does want to help so ask questions. He gives plenty of easy to attain bonus points.I would take him again. You really have to study and apply yourself to make an A or B, but wouldn't you have to make some kind of effort in any biology class?
The worst teacher I have ever had!! Do NOT take him if you plan on passing.
His notes and lectures are very hard to understand. I was really good in science but he taught WAY over my head.He doesn't communicate well if you try to talk with him.He outlines processes in drawings instead of step by step. He teraches more cell biology/ chemistry than biology.
Nice person. But he can not teach. He gets so caught up in things that he forgets what he is doing. You can't read his handwriting and forget the pictures. I do not recommend him at all.
This is the single worst teacher I have ever had. He can't write, he goes on tangents about crap like Star Trek, and he is diffiuclt to work with outside class. My Grandma died and he gave me a hard time about a makeup.
I've had easier but then again, he's he's no where as crappy as dr. benton. That man gets off on failing people.
Best Biology Instructor at JSU. All the negatives are from goofy freshmen that have no clue. Here is a hint... Go to class. Its amazing his tests are straight from notes, so if your not there then you fail. Grow up****s.
HORRIBLE! Obviously, the person who rated him prior to me is a science person like him b/c he seems to be clueless. He's an intelligent man, but he has no clue how to convey his thoughts and ideas to his students. I'm not a freshman, went to class every day, and I studied but it was pointless. RUN!
Tests aren't easy, but he is a good teacher.
Good teacher

He is a great teacher. He knows his stuff and does give notes that help... he is definately good with chemistry, too. He gives lots of examples and sometimes relates topics to everyday life. He is kinda weird sometimes... but it's not really ina bad way:)... take him if you like to work and actually earn a grade.

I'm a biology major and I say Do Not Take Sauterer!
Handwriting sucks. He talks about something other than what you want to know. Book is useless, but notes can sometimes be helpful if you understand what he's written and saying. GOOD LUCK you'll need it.
He writes everything on the blackboard. He is best prof in JSU. Also good for international studant.
He is the worst human being known at JSU. Run forrest RUN. on our first test 55 out of 80 made an F about half the class pretty much dropped leaving about 46 people in there which I know of 17 of us are re-taking becuase we couldn't even get a freaking D because his test does not even follow your notes, thats if you can make sense of what was wrtten
I've never hated a class like I hate his. He's by far the worst teacher I've ever had. I know he's smart and knows his stuff, but a little organization would do the man a world of good. I don't recommend anyone take him. His notes don't help me much, and the book is worthless. It's a shame. I would have really enjoyed this class with anyone else.
Dude was great. His description of the metric system is unforgettable. Just study his notes and know the pathways and you will get an "A". Also he takes a lot of cigarette breaks. That makes class go by fast!
Im not going to lie, his class is not easy, but he is not a bad teacher. if you read the book and really try, you'll be fine.

He is a very good teacher. Hard to read his writting, but if you pay attention and study, which you are in college to do, you'll do good in his class. If you are just there to play and not come to class, you won't do good.
He is a more geared towards teaching chem and cell biology. He gets freaked out when you ask him a question about something he said. He's not a good teacher!
This is my first biology class at JSU an it sucks. You can nor read what he writes on the board. He goes off subject a lot. Since the begining of the semester has has worn the same clothes every Tue. and Thur. On the positive side he does know what he is talking about but he doesn't relay it in a way for us to understand.
Dr. Sauterer is very lively, and I enjoyed the class. Even though his writing is hard to read, he always repeated what he said. As long as you take notes and STUDY, which students forget they have to do sometimes, you'll do just fine on the exams (hint: always know examples). Also, he has easy extra credit which can give you over 20 points!
Yes, he's a little "strange", but overall I liked Dr. Sauterer. I thought his class was challenging but, hello!, this is a 300 level bio class. Handwriting is tough to decipher, but he will usually clarify if you ask. If you record the lectures as well as take notes, it makes it all easier to understand.
Dr. Sauterer was very lively and illustrative. His handwriting is hard to read, but he explains what he writes. He gives lots of chances for extra credit and is a nice guy.
This is the best professor I have ever had! He is amazingly smart but is able to break it down to understandable 101 terms. Show up to class and take notes- I made an A and thought the world of him. Very helpful if you have any questions but be careful b/c you may be there for awhile- he is quite chatty.
Very poor teacher. I have not learned hardly anything from this teacher. I wished I would've taken someone else.
Maybe I just know my stuff well...but this clas wasn't that hard at all. Yes he gets off on it a little too easy, yes he needs to change clothes, and yes he needs to shut up and not repeat everything in the lab manual. Overall he helped me understand alot of the basic stuff...good guy, just a little weird. But hey, he's a college professor.
Great teacher. You have to go to class to do well, but his tests are all from the notes he puts on the board. Does he ever change clothes?
Very hard. Lots of notes and kind of nuts. Nice guy to a point. Term paper he says is for extra points turns out to be required.
Dr. Sauterer is a smart man, but he expects too much of his students. We don't have PhD's, but he expects us to explain as if we did.Tests are all essay questions (13-15 for a 1-hour class),and usually only gives a few points due to "incomplete answers". Come on,doc!! We're undergrads!! I understand that it's a 400-level class, but give us a break!!
NO POWERPOINT...............
A great guy and a great teacher. Highly recomend you take this class
Horrible. I hate Biology and he made me hate it more. He understands the material (hints the Ph.D) but he does not get it across well. Tests are hard. He doesn't teach from the book. He just talks and write the whole class period. No powerpoint and some sloppy writing! STAY AWAY!
HARD. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
This man is an amazing teacher! He is very tough and reccomends that you study @ least 40 hours for a cell bio test, but you learn SO much from his class! It ends up being very beneficial later on in the upper level biology classes. He's always willing to help outside of class. He's a bit odd, but he really has a heart of gold.
He is not a very good teacher but he gives TONS of extra credit so passing is not hard. His tests are a tad bit obscure though.
Dr. Sauterer is wonderful, consistent, and yet, spontaneous. He provides examples, gives study guides for clarity of lectures, and he even puts his old tests in the test bank, which is EXTREMELY helpful. This class requires work and attendence. It is worth it! He is very personable if you make time to see him for questions, comments, etc...
This man has no idea what he is teaching in this lab, he's told us that he doesnt many times.
He is a tricky teacher. To pass you need to study really hard and take really good notes. He gives a study guide, but it is just all the notes you took in class plus a bunch of extra stuff. His notes are also like twenty-five pages long. Go to class.
Would have had a much lower grade if I didn't have some of his previous tests to study by. Recording lectures helped a lot! He gives the option of writing a research paper to replace your lowest test grade. This class is hard, but it is possible to do well. Don't bother buying the cell biology book. The tests come straight from your notes.
He's extremely out there, which makes it a fun learning experience. However his class is hard. He goes into detail-he knows his stuff. He offers lots of extra credit, which can help bump up your score half a letter grade. He also offers an optional paper that will replace your lowest test-I suggest you do it. If you work hard you will pass!
Go to class. It's gonna be a challenge, be prepared to work, wonderful and hilarious guy. love him, just be prepared for lots of studying.
He is hard. You have to go to class and study REALLY hard to do well on exams. He offers an extra credit research paper to drop your lowest test score, but its due before you take exam 3. I recommend doing it even if your first 2 test scores are good, because you could still bomb test 3 (like i did).Overall decent professor if youre willing to work
Class was very difficult. He does too much of rambling. Avoid him if you can!
Get multiple copies of the previous tests or you will fail. You don't need the book. Study the notes online and every detail because his tests are super specific. Start studying the first day. He makes it way harder than it should be. It's almost like he wants you to fail. I wouldn't suggest him.
I think he is a good teacher he really knows his stuff!he makes it interesting with his funny examples make sure you have a copy of the old test just to help you study and copy everything he rights down on the board not a easy teacher but will help you when you ask if your confused, picky in grading overall good teacher take him u will learn a lot.
He's... interesting. This isn't an easy class, but if you pay attention and study, you will make a B without a problem. He doesn't use the book at all. He isn't a bad teacher, and he knows his stuff, BUT he writes in this strange combination of Wingdings and Sanskrit (just ask him to translate for you during the lecture)
Dr Sauterer is an amazing teacher . He really knows his material and breaks things down easy for you to understand if you pay attention. Listen to the funny stories. They generally touch with the topic he's speaking about . All his tests come from the lecture notes. Go to class. Pay attention. Ask questions. Study
This was the hardest class I have ever taken. I am normally a "mostly A's and very few B's" student but I received a D in this class. He doesn't use the book or PowerPoint, writes the notes on the chalkboard in chicken scratch handwriting, oh and the 85 PAGE study guide? No help in studying for his VERY specific tests. Would not recommend him.
Honestly he does know his material he's just not very good at explaining it. He does give you a "study guide" that is 75 pages worth of text that are just like what he says in class plus extra and it helped a little. I managed by with a C by doing all the extra credit he assigned. He's tough take at your own risk.
I took his class for By 101. He is a good person and a pretty good teacher. He gives extra credit. He has a study guide on blackboard so I would take those notes and his lecture notes and combine them throughout the whole semester, not getting behind. A week before the tests i would make note cards and start studying. I came out with an A.
AMAZING TEACHER! He is hilarious to listen to in lectures and his tests are INSANELY EASY! You MUST go to his lectures because he only writes on the board. As long as you study exactly what is lectured in class you will make an A! I have done just that and have made over a 100 on all of his tests. Would take him for BY 373 any day!
He's a really great and funny man, and I really enjoyed being in his class (as much as you can enjoy a 1 1/2 hour afternoon class). If you go to his office for help, he will do everything he can to help you understand (and love you forever). DO THE EXTRA CREDIT ARTICLES. They add up. You don't need the book.
Let me give you guys a word of advice, DO NOT take Cell with him if you are taking more than 15 credit hours. Studying days in advance is essential to passing and making an A is possible with hard work. Lab is chaotic, and you leave more frustrated and confused on what experiment you just did. Definitely recommend Hamissou for Cell.
Biology has never been a subject of interest for me. With that being said, Professor Sauterer is great at want he does. At first I wasn't sure that I liked his teaching style, but considering I learned more about biology from just one of his lectures vs. an entire year of high school, I'd take his class again.
If you do not go to class it is impossible to pass! Test are all open ended. He writes notes on how to improve your score on your test but good luck reading his hieroglyphic hand writing! Lectures are long and expect an extra lecture for most of lab time including his long coughing fits and constant smoke breaks! AVOID AT ALL COST!!!!
He may cough a lot and have bad handwriting, but he knows what he is talking about. He post his notes online and writes the most important stuff on the board. On the first and last day of class you take a 15pt bonus progress quiz. 10pts extra on tests, optional paper to replace lowest test, counts lab as a test grade. If you show up and study, A.
I haven't taken a Biology course in four years and pulled an A. Everyone complains about how "Hard" he is, but you will do great as long as you show up to class, take notes, and study. BE SURE to get a copy of the old test. A lot of the questions are the same test to test, but he does change things up a good bit. You will be there the entire class.
Great professor, very thorough with his explanations and he really cares about what he's doing. You will need to take very good notes, I also recommend audio recording his lectures and listening to them again to add in more notes you may have missed in class. He also offers a chance to write a paper (5-10 pages) that you can use as an exam grade.
Hilarious. 3 tests and a final - no homework. Doesn't take attendance but if you want to skip make sure you get the notes from someone. The class is just lectures but he writes EVERYTHING on the board so as long as your write down what he writes down and you study it, you WILL make a good grade in the class! Extra credit articles turned in weekly.
Definitely knows what he is teaching. He does cough a lot, but he loves his cigarettes so what do you expect? Sometimes flashbacks to his college days where he was definitely a flower child! You will need to study, I suggest, a week. People complain but you can't expect to pass if you are lazy! I've taken him twice, and will take him again!
HIS TESTS ARE VERY HARD. He writes stuff on the board, but not all of the details so be aware of that. He does offer an opitional research paper to replace your lowest test grade, and trust me you want to write it. His labs count as a test grade. I wouldnt suggest taking him if you are taking of hard classes. I wouldnt have if I had the option.
Dr. Sauterer is very nice however his teaching is awful. Be prepared to sit and listen to him ramble on and him write stuff on a board in *horrible handwriting. Alot of what he teaches lines up with his 300 level cellular bio class so the content is hard but not impossible. Tests are very hard, average was usually +- 50, but he does offer bonus.
Cool guy and knows what he's talking about. He writes EVERYTHING on the board but he has terrible handwriting, it looks like a 3 year-old threw up on the board. He's very nice and does study sessions after the class before the next test. The tests are nothing like the lectures.
Dr. Sauterer is a wonderful, caring professor.
Dr. Sauterer is overall a great guy. His class is hard and his lab is really long, but if you take notes and study, you will make it. What he says in class is EXACTLY how it is on the test. If he draws a picture or diagram in the board draw it too cause its on the test. If you cant make out his handwriting or missed something just ask him.
Doctor Sauterer is a great professor and an overall outstanding person but his teaching methods are very tough. He only uses the chalk board and no power points. If you do not show up to class you WILL fail. He defiantly knows his stuff and is very passionate. STUDY for at least a week for his exams or you WILL fail. He is tough but very wise.
Sauterer can quite frankly put you to sleep, but he does love his job and he LOVES biology. Do the extra credit, it will definitely benefit you. I struggled on his tests, but did the extra credit and ended with an A. You gotta work for it.
He's a really nice guy but his class is quite difficult. Doesn't use PowerPoints and writes everything out on a chalkboard. His handwriting is terrible but he'll clarify it if you ask. Make sure to do the extra credit paper. Like I said, his class was very difficult.
Dr. Sauterer is a very smart man. He seems to really know what he is talking about. However, I really struggled at times. He tends to get a bit off topic, though his stories are hilarious. I began the semester in the middle of the room. Then, I moved front row. Writing is extremely hard to read. GO TO CLASS! Write the optional research paper!
Funny guy but I did not enjoy his class. Freshman semester so it was partially my fault for not doing the reading as much as I should have, but he doesn't do a very good job of explaining things and is very old school. No powerpoints, no online notes, doesn't even use blackboard. Wasn't a fan.
DONT TAKE. He is lecture heavy, and he does not give you any materials outside of notes you take by yourself. It's way too hard for an intro bio class. He does offer extra credit, but if you are failing every test like I was, the extra credit doesn't help much. I ended up dropping the class. It's in your best interest not to take him. Just saying.
DO NOT TAKE. I took this class my fourth semester to decide if I wanted to major in science or business and I've never had a more difficult class. The only notes you get in the class are what he writes on the board and they rarely are on the test. I also did an extra credit paper that was about 4 pages and gave me 10 points for it. DO NOT TAKE.
So he is a tough grader, if possible I recommend looking up quizlets for his test. But if you fail, it really is your own fault. He offers to extra credit projects, each of which replaces one exam grade. Hes has a total of 4 exams including the final. So study your notes and DO the extra credit and youll be fine. Dont skip lab, look at past test
Hes a harsh grader so make sure you study. His lectures can also be really hard to follow so I recommend you sit towards the front so you can actually hear him. He has 4 exams and he will decide if the class needs extra credit. Also dont skip/miss lab.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESOR! I have never struggled so hard in a class. There a 5 pop quizzes and 4 tests, doesn't use powerpoints instead he writes 3 bullets on the board and gives you at least 40 pages of lecture notes online. The test don't have anything to do with notes. The only extra credit is a 5 -1 research paper. No tutoring can help!!!
just no. dont
Hes a nice man very sweet nice man who cares about us but good lord I could not learn a single thing. I would study my assss off and even get tutoring and still completely fail the test and he only takes test grades so good luck homies
