I love this class. He is a great instructor and a really great person. His quizzes and exams are super easy. However, do not take this class unless you have taken Latin previously; the pace is quite quick.
This professor is awesome. He is fun, interesting, and makes coming to class easy. The teachings are quick but the info is easy to comprehend.

Most interesting lectures I have ever been to at Uconn. The readings are a l ittle lengthy but do-able. He is the BEST professor I've ever had! And cute!
I love this professor he is the absolute best I have ever had, and I took both classes he taught for that reason. The lectures are very interesting and fun, he tries to tie in everyday film with morals of ancient greece, He is so interested in the topic its so fun to watch. Do all the readings!
FAR too much work for a 101. If you're looking for something easy, do NOT take this class. He's a nice guy, but lots of reading and the lectures feel kinda long, despite being 50 minutes. Just way too much info to know/read for the level of the class. Like I said, if you want an easy class, DO NOT take this. 200 lvl are easier.
I really like this class, even though it is not as easy as I thought it would be Prof. Travis makes it really interesting and he has a great sense of humor. Just make sure you do all the reading and don't get behind.
I don't know what those other ppl were talking about THis class is awful its really hard there is so much reading you wouldn't believe it. Yeah you watch movies and listen to songs but it is really hard. And if you dont do the reading your lost. I would strongly reccomend that no one EVER take this class.
I enjoyed the lectures and the way he taught but the class was insanely hard. I had to take notes on all the readings just to keep up. Even if you know your info, the tests are super difficult because of the way he words things.
His lectures may get a bit off course, but they're terribly interesting. He loves the subject, and does an amazing job of connecting it to modern ideas using media (South Park, Matrix, all sorts of fun stuff!) Very fun to talk to out of class, too :)
first off...DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS EVER!! Insanely hard, rediculous amount of reading...study guides consist of 80 names and 5 major topics for a 20 question quiz...does that make sense?
I've taken 3 different classes with him, and I loved all of them. He relates the topics in 101/103 to current media, he explains the readings, and generally helps you UNDERSTAND, not just memorize. Yes, there is some memorization. Guess what? It's COLLEGE, kids. You have to, like, omg, READ! Do the readings, and his classes are easy.
theres nothing like watching south park to help you understand greek philosophy
I honestly loved being in his class. You never knew what was going to be discussed. There is a lot of memorization but as long as you do the readings and can remember the stories, you'll do alright.
This was the BEST course I took in my 4 years at UConn!!! Dr. Travis loves what he does and is able to teach it in a way that is interesting to his students. I actually looked forward to going to his class. Entering it, you might wonder, "what good will classical mythology serve me in life?"....well, he'll show you via tv and movie clips!
One of the best classes Ive taken at UConn so far. It's rather and enjoyable and it's not too hard--just do the readings. (But if you don't like reading tis class isn't for you because they're long and detail packed.) If you have an interest in greekmythology you should take this class!
Brilliant teacher, genius in his field. The best teacher I have ever had.
If every teacher could love what he teaches this much, and love to teach this much, the world would be better off.
Best professor I've had at UConn. If you skip class or don't do the readings, then you will probably do poorly. It isn't hard to get an A if you just take good notes and actually read. Plus Travis is a very engaging and interesting lecturer. Cute too. ;)
I would not recommend this class; its extremely difficult for a 100 level class. There is a ton of reading, and he evidently thinks his class is the only class you have on your schedule. If you're looking for a somewhat easy elective, this is not the class for you.
One of the best teachers at UConn, easily!
Travis is the bomb, and so is his class, but he has no Halo 3 kleos whatsoever.
If you don't mind reading, then he is an AMAZING professor. His lectures are interesting (I had him for 103 & 242) and he knows so much about his field. It was also refreshing to have a prof who doesn't mind if you don't see things quite his way -- even tho he disagreed with a paper he gave me an A anyway cuz I proved my point well. He's awesome!!!
travis has more kleos than any other professor at uconn; just not in halo 3
Prof. Travis is awesome. He loves the subject but you have to go to class and you have to do the readings your up a creek. He makes is very interesting you watch a ton of movie clips, but do not be fooled this class is no joke. Not an easy 100 level but a good class none the less.
Do not take CAMS 103! He assigns tons of reading. Tests are hard because they are all essays. Our final exam was made to take you more than 2 hours long. Very difficult class.
Greatest professor anyone could wish for. Exams were pretty easy, basic identifications on popular characters in mythology and it was multiple choice!!! Anyone who's been saying it's essay is crazy! No way would Travis give essay exams to a lecture only class. He expects scholars in his classes, if nothing else, he'll try make you into a scholar.
He's a fantastic teacher who really knows his stuff. He'll connect myth to things you never realized could have myth connected to them! Yes, he gives a lot of reading, and his tests aren't the easiest, but in the end you'll come away happy (assuming you put a little work into it). I would *love* to take more classes with Prof. Travis.
Awesome teacher, really makes you think and helps you understand...He connects mythology to things you would never ever think of. The lectures are really interesting, and the quizzes are tough, but worth it. Definitely a good class...fills a gen ed requirement for CLAS...worth it.
I had him for a couple classes. Class is a lot of fun, he is a relaxed enough guy so that when you get something wrong, even really really wrong, you aren't berated for it. He creates a really good learning environment
Awesome teacher, awesome class. It's the only one i really look forward to. laugh a lot, good movie/music clips, never a boring class. it looks like a lot of reading but chapters are generally short; if you like mythology it's no problem.
I'm a senior and a science major and this class took more work then any of my molecular biology classes. Don't waste your time he makes it unnecessarily hard and finds enjoyment in his students getting Cs and Ds and offers no help if you are concerned with your grade. If you need this for a literature requirement take another class
Tougher than I expected. He grades on a curve which is very helpful. As long as you're above the curve, you'll get better than a B-. I was getting a B+ the whole semester before the final. Everyone bombed the final, but I did so well that I got an A. Never a boring class. Would take another class with Travis anytime
This class was online but for my first online class Travis was the best teacher to have. He was extremely helpful and would do anything for the students in his class. The assignments were interesting and i was surprised the enjoyment and interest i got from the class. ROGER IS THE BEST!
took class online. every other sunday took about 2 hours to do all the work. had too few tas and cancelled a bunch of assignments. sweet class
This is a tough one- you are expected to know a lot of details and you'd better have a friend who is a diligent note-taker if you miss any classes. I found it to be very challenging, but loved it. I graduated four years ago (took the class seven years ago) and it's still the most memorable class I took while at UConn.
This class is taught in an online setting. Overall the class is terrible, the readings are obnoxiously long and the assessments are not covered well in the readings. He is a terrible professor and his video lectures are atrocious. I am astounded that the university is allowing students to pay 1100 dollars to take such a low quality class.
To the reviewer below me: Haters gonna hate. Dr. Travis is THE MAN. Online lectures are great, he is very good at keeping your attention. Mandatory discussions pretty thought provoking, class overall is a BREEZE if you put a small bit of effort in. Great CLAS requirement to take.
Awful! No explaination of whats on quizzes. Text book is incomprehensible. Have to have ur PHD in order to understand unclear lectures. Nerdy trivia questions- boring!
Took the class online. Was a complete breeze, Travis is interested in what he's talking about and makes it really interesting. If you need a literature Gen Ed, DEFINITELY take this class!
I took this class as a gen ed online over winter break and it wasn't too bad! Caution: there is a lot of heavy reading involved and papers due for each module. Dr. Travis keeps the lectures relatively interesting, featuring many movie clips. This class is an easy class IF you do the work and put in the time to learn the material!
Why is it renamed CAMS?and why does everyone think he brilliant, because he acts brilliant? well he isnt. And why are videogames so crazy with classics? I dont get it. He's actually just crusty, and throws around greek words when he's about as really greek as mybigfatgreekwedd which is as greek as white bread.
Much of the class was concerned with his "pet" theories about the individual books. These theories "cough cough" are not even rationally founded so it seems, but have the nature of airy speculation like a prospector. Yet he WILL push them to even overrun the class. I cannot believe anyone lets him continue. Besides, he dont teach greek well.
This is honestly the worst class I've ever taken in my college career. Somehow, he has managed to make a 100% online low level course one of the harder courses I have taken. I would advise anyone taking this class to reconsider
Do not buy textbooks, you can do his essays through his lectures. I didn't read a single page in any of the three books I bought for $200. Some of the points he makes doesn't make sense. I literally type out what he says in his lectures and read it over out loud and ask myself how the f is he a college prof.
Took the mythology course online. It's pretty much an easy A, but it's extremely boring, unless you happen to be super interested in mythology. There's discussion you need to post on every couple days. There are quizzes every 2 weeks, but you can use your book, etc. There is also a paper due every 2 weeks which is easy, but pretty boring.
I took CAMS 1103 online during the winter intersession. I thought Travis was a great prof. He clearly cares a lot about the subject matter and wants his students to like it as well. He's willing to answer any questions you have in a timely manner. Great sense of humour and an easy class.
Super easy class if you put in the time! Just always put emphasis on the "cultural truth value" and you'll be fine! I didn't use the books too much (got away with using google). He's a nice professor and gives a bunch of extra credit question. If you need a class for intersession I say take this class.
Super easy class! You don't need the textbooks, everything you need to know can be found online; lectures can get a little boring; there's a short paper every week and you have to post on discussion boards a lot, but it's really easy topics and grading
Took his course online. Online lectures were a little odd, but entertaining and not too long. Amount of reading assigned was ridiculous, but not all necessary to do the work. 5 discussion posts, a short paper (1-2 pages max), and a retakable quiz every two weeks. He emphasized connecting myths to modern works, which I found interesting.
Literally the easiest.
took the online May Term version of this course. easiest A you could imagine. DO NOT BUY ANY OF THE TEXTBOOKS OR TEXTS. the textbook is online and you can get away with just sparknoting the texts. it's a fast paced course with assignments due every two days, so stay on top of it or your grade will suffer. besides that, the work itself is easy
Took this class for the May term and it was a great decision! The class can totally be managed in that amount of time. Just make sure that you participate in online discussions, make sure to write posts at 4-6 times to get a good grade. The 'lab report' got tedious, but they are fairly easy to write!! I would recommend this if you need a gen ed!!
Very boring class, you're supposed to read a ton of pages every two weeks, watch his lecture videos, take a quiz, post in a discussion 5 times and write a 3 page paper. Only took because it was online and a gen ed requirement. Grades are mostly up to your TA. Lab reports get old really fast, and you have to write 7 of them.
CAMS 1103 is probably the best way to fill up your content area. It is easy to do well IF you do the work. It requires almost constant attention throughout semester. Must post in discussion every 48hrs, 500-700 word (closer to 1500 accounting for the description), quizzes. Will never give you a terrible grade but an A on any part is not a given.
Winter 2016: 7 modules, each module lasts about 2 days. In each module you watch recorded lectures, post 5 times in a group discussion, and write a 500-750 analysis on a modern day myth. Really easy class. If you take it over an intersession, get read to spend almost every day doing work. You need to textbook for citations, but not to actually read
I took this online over a Winter Intercession for a CAMS course for my degree and it was awesome. Because of the short time frame, I had to be online every day doing homework and assignments (so it can be demanding if you're busy), but he's great and funny with the online lectures (find free textbook and classic books online- don't buy them).
Took this class online during Winter to fill a lit gen-ed and it was an easy, fun class! There is a good amount of work and writing but you get to pick what you write about. There are team discussions that you NEED to participate in. This class does take some time since there is reading so you do need to be mostly free during the break.
Easiest class you can take. I seriously recommend it to everyone. I took it online during the May term to boost my gpa and earn more credits and it was best decision ever. The work-load was not overbearing, it required 1-2 hours of work daily, at the most. Just make sure to definitely post in the discussion board every day, and do the assignments.
Class is Online, you have to post 5 discussion post per module, and write a Lab Report for each module. discussions are opinion based, the lab reports are pretty much based off the lecture videos, follow the Lab Model he gives and you'll be set. Easiest Class ever, very interesting and well worth taking as you'll find interesting modern day myths
Professor Travis is a very nice guy, but the class all depends on the TA you get and how hard they'll be on you. Honestly only take the class if you're well versed in either mythology, genre of fantasy, or movies OR if you're taking it pass/fail . If you're not it's very difficult to come up with a different TV show or movie to write about.
This course is an online course and it allows you to get all the work done when you want. His curriculum is by modules and each module you have 2 weeks to work on. I usually do every thing 2 days before its do and its not a lot of work. Just listen to the lectures and you will do great. He gives examples so you know exactly what to do!
Read what everyone else said and take this class for the easy A. Also, watch his TedxUConn talk! Very cool!
Good class overall, but it is NOT an easy A, you have to write an essay every two weeks and do discussions with your fellow online classmates, I would say the professor is very nice, but this class does require you to read, write, and discuss with other students so don't think it's "easy" just because it is online, but I would not consider it hard
Decent class. The video lectures were a little boring. Each module requires at least 5 blog posts on the provided subject, a quiz with unlimited attempts, and a 500-750 essay. If you do the work, it's a fairly easy A. However if you're someone who is lazy and waits until the last minute to get stuff done, you won't do well. Recommended class.
This class involves a lot of reading. You can use sparknotes but discussions and lab reports will be more difficult. Course is not hard but requires a lot of effort and work. Don't take course if you're not familiar with movies like star wars, american pie, harry potter etc. If you're nerdy and into mythology, perfect. If not, take something else
Expectations are very clear and assignments are straightforward. Travis always replies back promptly and would make an effort to make sure your questions are answered. Class work is as expected for a 1000 level course if not easier.
I took this class as a gen ed requirement and I honestly didn't enjoy it but that's because I don't like classical mythology. There is a lot of reading and writing, however, the assignments were grades pretty easily and I quickly learned that minimal effort still got me A's on my papers. That being said, you still have to do all the work to pass.
7 Modules over 14 weeks, 3 assignments due at the end of each 2 week module. Overall, not bad if you stay on top of it.
Prof Travis expects a lot out of you but if you do everything on time (no matter the quality) you'll find his class to be an easy B at least. Lots of videos and reading but he breaks up the boringness through movie clips and his funny personality. I took it online as a 3 week course and I'd say it's easy to stay on top of if you are self motivating
7 modules. Unlimited attempt on each quiz which was nice. Discussion posts and reports were worth more. I found it super hard to get an A in either of those writings. The highest I ever got was a 93 on those (never got a 100 even when the feedback said "good"). Definitely do the extra credit and know when assignments should be submitted.
There were 7 2-week modules, each requiring one quiz, 5 discussion posts, and a writing assignment. The quizzes have unlimited attempts. The writing and discussion were difficult to succeed in because the highest grade I would get was a 93, and the grader never gave any criticism so I didn't know what I did wrong. It's a lot of work, but not awful.
A lot of work for a diversity credit, definitely not worth while if you are not interested in the subject matter. Readings are almost 100 pages every time, do not wait until last minute to start doing the modules.
Professor Travis is fantastic. He does a great job connecting the stories with modern day comparisons. Would definitely recommend if you want a fair and enjoyable gen ed.
I don't know why grades of each paper are capped at 93. This means you cannot get higher school than 93. Plus, 93 is lower limit for A. You have to do your best every time for A. This make sense, but it will not be resilient for people who really have emergent issue with impossibly documented excuses, like house moving, etc. NO EXTRA! DON'T TAKE!
There are lots of paper works and works are capped at 93. You have to participate discussion. Though your analysis is great you cannot get higher. Twice I missed the ddl, I was told rule is rule. There is no excuse chance, unless it is DOCUMENTED. Even no extra credits for better grade. I really want to work more, but it is useless. Bad overall!!!!
No matter what you do, you cannot get higher than 92
SOOO MUCH WORK but hey no exams. 7 lab reports 7 discussions 7 quizzes thats it. discussions are dramatic though theres 5 posts everytime - so 35 posts in total... - good luck.
Great Professor. 7 papers in total and 35 discussion posts. Not difficult. Just do the work before the deadlines and you will encounter no issue at all.
The course has a lot of work but it's not to bad if you just stay on top of it. He does it my giving a module every 2 weeks. Each module you need to post 5 times on the discussion board, take a quiz (you can retake it), and write a 500-750 word page paper. Every two weeks, not too bad.
Professor Travis was a phenomenal professor that made this online course super fun! There is plenty of extra credit opportunity, and the assignments are straight-forward and a breath of fresh air from my more intense courses. Everyone says he caps at 93 for grades, but I broke that multiple times, reaching up to 96. It is almost a fun challenge!
The class may have a lot of reading, but I mostly skimmed and did really good on lectures. The reports are all on stuff you are interested in and were kind of fun to write, the quizzes are easy and the discussion posts are also easy to write. The class is set up in 7 modules, each for 2 weeks so if you did read everything its manageable, no book!
Such a nice professor, he always responds to emails as fast as he can. This class can be reading heavy but once you get through that it is pretty easy. Discussion posts and a paper due every 2 weeks, which gives you plenty of time to complete assignments. There are also reading quizzes that are very easy to do. I recommend this class to anyone!
A ridiculous amount of reading honestly, I'd only read what I needed to write reports/discussions successfully. 7 modules, each has a 500-750 word lab report, 5 discussion posts, and a quiz. Quizzes easy w/ unlimited retakes. Do all 5 discussions you get an A. Lab reports mostly fine. I rarely got anything above a 94 for discussions or lab reports
Great online course assignments were very clear though learning the material is a little time consuming
I dropped this course because there was so much work involved. Yes it is an online course, so you are somewhat able to complete things on your own time, however with the amount of readings, and video lectures that you are required to watch, and then write/answer discussion questions as well as do a mini "lab report" or writeup, and take a quiz.
CAMS 1103 is a great online class if you do not want to sit in a lecture hall, however this class easily has 6+ hours of reading and writing work a week and you need to engage with the course across multiple days of the week to get full credit. Genuinely so much writing, but no exams!
Online, long attachments to read in each module, plus a discussion board, and paper, though it is fairly simple for grading. I would take this again, it was a good online to fulfill a CA1. I would utilize your resources to summarize the long resources. The lectures are very entertaining and short for each segment.
This professor allows ChatGPT, just asks to note somewhere during your reports if used. Massive plus because without chat GPT I'd be spending 5+ hours doing these reports and discussion boards. Other then that I spent about 2 hours every 2 weeks and got an A. Structured well, plenty of reminders. I found the topics to be super uninteresting.
This class actually was not that bad. It is a lot of reading so prepare yourself for that. He allows the use of AI as long as your transparent about the usage. It's rather easy to do well in this class. I spent about 2.5 hours every 2 weeks on his class and did pretty well. Overall, decent class with a decent professor
Roger Travis is a vindictive and lazy teacher; his class mostly runs itself, and he leaves everything else to his TA's. He provides students with outdated and poorly made recorded lectures and will avoid contact with students whenever possible. Not worth the convenience of an online class.
Class is easy, but it looks like a lot on the syllabus. You don't really need to read everything he tells you too, you just need to know the basic idea and then have examples for the papers in the modules. It's lowkey a lot of work for a 1000 level course, but since everything's online it kinda makes sense
