best prof at UB!
Made course really interesting, fun delivery, very knowledgeable.
Best professor ever!
Best lecturer ever. I got an A without doing any of the additional reading. Actually makes class fun and interesting. If you are not going to go to class, it will be very difficult.
he took the time to shake hands with every student at the beginning of every class in a 200 person class
Excellent lecturer, very clear and explains things very well. As long as you go to class, the exams are unbelievably easy. If you are interested in mythology, you'll LOVE this class!
he's the greatest EVER
Makes every class into an epic storytelling session. Good cadence and pronunciation, and really knows how to make ancient myths come to life. Highly reccomended to anyone with even the slightest hint of imagination.
Best lecturer ever. Reads the myths like a Shakesperian actor on stage. Makes the material really come to life. You can't be bored in his classes. Shakes hands with everyone by the end of the semester, even in huge classes.
Best teacher ever!! Passionate about course material
If you don't take this course, I pity you.
Please take this course.
It's like storytime in college.
what everyone else said times 12.
Lectures are interesting and all you need to know for the exams. Don't need to read the books. And he actually walks around the whole lecture hall to shake people's hands before class
Prof. Woodard is AMAZING!!! His class is so awesome and I was sad to leave it!!! Take Myth and Religion it is one of the best courses on campus !!!

Like other people said, its storytime in college. This is the one class that everyone should be forced to take. this is one class that you never ever would skip...I think everyone remembers this..On Friday we talked about....... Thor...Thor
Nice guy, very smart, but he tries to pack too much into a single course.
This is Sanskrit I and he teaches it very much like he did for HIS/CL/RSP113. Hard class, but to be expected learning a 3000 year old dead language.
An awesome professor. His lectures are the best and he takes the time and the effort to go the extra distance. Loved talking to him after class about various topics and he always gave excellent feedback. In short.... a must have class.
HATED HIS CLASS.
The man knows like 15 languages! Greek, Phoenician, Sanskrit... dead languages galore. The class is amazing. It is taught directly out of a work/study guide. The tests mirror the practice tests in the work guide. Amazing. He is also an amazing teacher. He tells a story more than he teaches.
He is a fair teacher and there is no reason for anyone to do poorly. He gives you practice tests that mirror the tests and as long as you read over the material, you are good to go. He has the funniest voice influctions that keep you awake.
Very interesting class
Great lecturer! Reminds me of a Shakespearian trained actor. Gives nice curves on exams and no papers. Expect a lot of note taking on his lectures though.
Terrific class, Storytime in college. I suggest you go to the lectures, but if you dont, the whole class is printed in the text. Easy homework, easy tests. People I know sit in just for fun.
By far the best class I have taken since I got here w/ the best professor! Extremely funny guy who makes class fun and interesting and goes around shaking ppls hands b4 class starts. The tests are easy and the some of the questions are the same as the ones in the review book. Easy A!
took this class to fulfill a requirement and was very surprised with the first class... dont need to go to lectures but i do anyway cause its a fun and interesting class "made love to a rock!" he gives hi-5s and handshakes b4 class. and the way he speaks keeps you awake!
Woodard is fantastic. You should go to every class and write down ever word he says, but you don't have to read the books. I got a 95 on every test without reading. All MC test. Awesome, funny, great lecturer.
Without a doubt the best lecturer at UB. Some of the stories in the class were so entertaining that I've actually came back to sit in his class just for fun this semester. Tests can be hard if you don't come to class - which is a HUGE mistake. He shakes hands before the start of every class.
Roger is god
Awsome guy, he likes to shake everyone's hand before class and get aquanted with them. He gives the lecture notes out so you can follow along. Tests are a bit hard to remember all these similar Indic names, but you can get through it.
He likes to shake hands with and talk to students before class begins. When he lectures he reads right out of the text, so it is easy to follow him, however, sometimes it can become a little boring.
This man is a genius! Amazing lecturer, hilarious, oh and did I mention he is a genius?! Take this class!
Couldn't ask for a more interesting class. He likes to shake hands with his students before class and is a genius!
Awesome class, although the lectures can get tidious, the material is great, and he's very organized and structured, which is cool. I love it!

Definately take this class he is one of the nicest professors, shakes everyone hand before class. Speaks clearly gives structured lectures and has a good sense of humor. His tests are diffucult because they are fill in the blank if you do study the practice tests you'll do fine.
AWSOME professor, smart man, kinda talks like a game show host, information is a litle complex, names all sound the same, but his tests are straightforward, curves them all, gives you the answers to the front page of the test
Very interesting guy, never met anyone quite like him. Good class though. Buy the book, he basically reads right out of it during class. Attendance was mandatory, but its worth going to. A little boring at the beginning of year, but really gets into the material as the semester goes on. Definitely an expert in his field. Would highly recommend.
he is a really cool guy. Seriusly take this class. The tests are a little difficult and require a lot of memorization.
Simply put: The Man. Prof. Woodard is great. He is passinoate so he is not boring and throws in th eoccasional joke, but one of his jokes is better than 100 of most of these corny professors who crack jokes all class (Blair is excluded, hes always funny). The tests arent easy, so study hard, but take this class.
I'm sure all of you who have wrote your comments were joking about him being hott and being a genius as well in his subject. You all need to choose your wrds carefully the next time you rate a professor, this guy is boring, his voice is sooo annoying and it seems like he has no life except to notice the different consonants of every language exist
The guy below me is no doubt one of the many people who do poorly on the exams. Pathetic. Prof. Woodard is the most entertaining, kind, and energetic teacher i've ever had. He can be a little indimidating at first, but once you go talk to him you'll see how great he is outside of the classroom too. I can't say enough good things about him.
He's a great teacher, just awesome. His was the only class I looked forward too every week. I would take any other class he offered. He's the best professor i've had in 4 years at Buffalo. He blows away the other 3 Classics professors I had class with.
Not impressed. I'm doing fine on exams so I'm not complaining about grades. The textbook (that he wrote) is terrible. Way too much material is covered for a one hundred level class. I shouldn't have to put aside my 400 level class to study for this one for 4 hours! The homework is easy but exams make up 75% of the grade.
I really enjoy this class. It's story time! It is all memorization, but if you can tell the story, you are fine. He really enjoys what he is doing. I look forward to going to this class. There is a book published by him that have all the notes in it.
who thinks this guy is hot? um that is false info. anywayz, his class is tough, you really need to study for his exams for like two days in order to get a perfect score. his homewrk assignments are easy, i dunno if you really have to come to class,b/c attendance is required, i'll check up on that once i get my grade in May.
the exams are surprisingly hard but not harder than is fair; most 100 level courses involve memorization instead of like papers or something so that's to be expected, and the course material really is just like story time... studying for the tests is not as difficult if you go to every class
HORRIBLE class... SO boring.. tests are fill in the blank (you get a word bank and sometimes the word isnt even in it!).. the last exam was ALL the reading (only about 20 of the back of the book questions).. would not reccomend this class for a gen ed.. and his TA is impossible to get a hold of..
Woodard acts like he's on stage during his lectures and it works well given the material. Tests are a **** - it's practically all rote memorization. Trouble is, there is a lot to memorize.
He sounds really cool in lectures, but thats about it. His tests are easy, but ask for the most useless info, like specifics on pointless things. He requires you to buy the book he wrote, with tear out answer sheets, so he can collect the royalty on it. which is a SCAM, you cant print it, you need to buy the book. the class sucks in general.
Let's see - the guy below me is mad because he had to buy the book the prof. wrote - well if you were smart enough to write a book on your subject, don't you think it would be the best one to use? I thought the book was a great study tool and this was the best class I ever took. Woodard is the most amazing prof at UB and in the Classics dept. esp.!
Definitely wouldnt recommend taking this class for a gen ed. Too much information to memorize for a 100 level course. Names of gods are hard to keep straight and his voice is incredibly annoying.
This was possibly the greatest class I ever took at UB. Woodard is amazing, and I can't believe anyone could say anything bad. The huge curves on the tests indicate there were a lot of people with bad grades though, that probably explains it. This guy doesn't have 400 people in his class every semester for no reason - he is awesome and entertaining
I definately can not say anything bad about this guy as a person. He's entertaining to listen to and loves what he's doing. However, don't take this class if you're not prepared to go to all the classes and study a lot for the tests-it's all memorization. The class is harder than I would have expected from a 100 level.
all of the perky messages that are below are total B.S. the guy was so annoying, his voice was like a game show host's and his tests were ridiculous, they asked too much from you, therefore you needed to spend quite a bit of time studying for a gen. ed. class, dont take this class if you are expecting an easy A, you gotta study for it
He was incredible!
I hated every minute of this class. You have to memorize everything! His voice makes the class very dull and boring. I know a lot of people who dropped this class the first week. I would not recommend it with this professor.
Prof. Woodard is great and he make the class interesting his voice brings life to the stories he tell and the stories are within itself different but still interesting to read, The work is easy simply context clues answering questions. It couldnt be any easier. Take it to fulfill your history needs.
Very eccentric person. Not boring at all. Class is difficult because of material. Alot of names you need to remember. For tests, just study his practice tests and memorize the questions to the answers. His tests are just taking practice test questions and mixing them up.
This is the most rediculous 100 level class I have ever taken, there is just way too much memorization, during the year its not all that bad but during finals week its the only thing u have time to study for, the tests are impossible and he talks like hes announcing a boxing match, I would NEVER recomend this class to anyone... EVER
whoever said he was good looking was SADLY mistaken. He gives us a "study guide" which is pretty much the class notes, we have "pop quizzes" and homework due every once in a while (extremely easy)...as long as you study DIRECTLY from the notes, you'll do amazing on the exams. No final. Just 3 non-cumulative exams.
definately not the class to take to satisfy a gen ed. interesting, but difficult course load- excessive amount of details/names/stories to remember. the class was interesting and felt like story time, but when it got down to test time it was nearly impossible to recall all the facts.
I thought this class was very easy and very interesting. Prof. Woodard is a bit strange but he's a very nice guy and is good at what he does, telling stories. Tests require nothing more than memorization of names, so if you can't memorize, stay away. Otherwise, it's all right there in the book. Definitely recommended for a gen ed.
I was strongly interested in this material until I took this class - absolutley the worst class I have ever taken. The material to study for tests was horrific. I would study for many hours, and then still struggle on the tests. From what I observed, at least 50% of the class cheated every test. Only take this class if you are good at cheating.
While an ultimatly beautiful and elouent man, I found Rodger's class very dull and boring. The only thing I took away from it was the imense joy of the morning handshakes and the fact the it's all about the proto-indo-europeans.
Easy A! Definitely take this class for a gen ed. He makes class very fun and interesting. Material is not difficult, just memorize the names and you should have no trouble at all. Tests even provide word banks.
Don't listen to the haters, Woodard is awesome, pure AWESOME.
Great guy! Lectures are easy to follow since everything is in the manual. Exams are very similar to the practice exams, but there is a LOT of material to be memorized.
Good Gen Ed class to take. 3 exams word bank, and study guide questions. Lots to memorize tho and he is very good at story telling, but everything that comes out of his mouth is in the manual. So why go to class?
Don't bother showing up to class. Attendance is "mandatory," but he only took attendance once during the semester. Everything he says is in the manual, one of the three books that he wrote. Some of the ratings say that his teaching technique is interesting, but it puts me to sleep. Also, I went to ask him something, and he acted very condescending.
I liked his class. He makes it pretty interesting. Also, he's a really nice guy. All the information you need to know is in the manual, but like everyone's been saying, it's a lot of memorization. If you go to class, it makes the tests easier.
very personable guy, has a great sense of humor and a great storyteller, dont belive all of this nonsense about there being alot to memorize, tests are a simple. only drawback to the course would be the money you have to spend on the textbook package
Great teacher for this class. He talks loud enough for everyone to hear him and he's very clear. Tests are from the lecture, and you should make notes, while the book is a bit hard to decypher.
Skilled at giving lectures, certainly. Engaging, humorous and charming. Class is a pleasure, but the tests are pure torture. Especially the cumulative final. He can be unclear about course requirements, but I don't thinkg hes out to get you. You will need to study a lot and its a lot of boring material. Not the worst class to take I guess.
I thought Roger was an amazing professor, he is so cute! Roger was very helpful. His lectures were amazingly interesting. He has a very theatrical voice, which makes it entertaining. I thought he told stories beautifully, and I really enjoyed his class. The textbook is exactly like lectures, so you dont have to go, but why not?! GREAT CLASS & PROF
Great professor, talks loud and makes boring lectures sortof interesting. Has a good sense of humor. Tests are very hard, involving A LOT of memorization of boring material. Hard to predict what will be on the exam. Difficult comprehensive final.
great teacher! he's really nice, and the lectures are really interesting. definitely take this class.
Woodard is the friggin man. He talks really loud and adds expression to what he says making things easier to remember. Great sense of humor. Tests are easy just read the manuel
HILARIOUS! Makes lectures very fun. Wonderful sense of humor and incredibly knowledgable. He wrote the book and manual - lectures are word for word in the manual so just hilight and pay attention and you'll do great - tests are hard but an hour or 2 of studying the night before will get you atleast a B. Got an A in the class because he is the mannn
He is....the man. Class is not that hard, follow along in the book during lecture he practically reads right out of it. He is hilarious and I definitely recommend the class
great class taught by the best professor ever
The great thing about his lecture is that he makes you buy the book he published with all the lecture notes already in it! Low stress class, interesting material, and Woodard is just a hilarious person. Speaks with a "shakespearian" accent, but works well with his personality. Fantastic class!
Woodard is THE MAN. Don't even read the bad reviews, they are just from people too lazy to take an hour from their night before an exam to open the lecture manual (which already has ALL the lecture notes in it). THIS CLASS IS AN EASY A!!! Material is interesting, Woodard is hilarious and intelligent. Sit in the front and he'll like you better.
great professor, all the notes are in the manual with practice exams at the back-the exams are basically taken from the practice exams. woodard makes class interesting. takes attendance with pop quizzes, but don't happen often.
Best class I have taken. Myth & Religion in the ancient world. Very easy, just come into class do the homework and easy exams fill in the blank with word box. Obviously more words than blanks to make it so you had to pay attention. TAKE THIS CLASS.
WOODARD IS A BEAST....the single greatest professor this University has ever seen...take this class!!
Everything you've ever heard about Chuck Norris applies to Professor Woodard.
Woodard is by FAR the greatest teacher i've EVER had during my 16 years of going to school. The tests were easy if you just spent 2 hours the night before going over ppl's names & what they did. Class isn't mandatory but you'd be INSANE not to attend class. Brilliant man. I wish i failed so i could take the class again. (serious) TAKE THIS CLASS!!
Woodard is an excellent lecturer and I truly enjoyed this class, but the required reading is overkill for a 100-level survey. I took it for fun, crammed before the tests (which cover an immense amount of material in detail, all to be memorized) and got a B, which was disappointing. If you're taking this on the side, know that it's not a breeze.
Dr. Woodard is a literary and captivating lecturer--I left each class feeling enlightened in mythology. Dr. Woodard was very helpful to me weeks after the semester ended and I was impressed by such personal attention in a class of hundreds. A great professor well-versed in this airtight course. I thought the reading and tests appropriate.
Should a college class be "a breeze"? I thought the reading and tests were fair, and Woodard is an awesome professor, very helpful and a good speaker. Take this class with him.
Had him for an undergrad Mythology class at USC in 1995, and occasionally saw him around the Linguistics Dept. I've thought of him often since then, and even wished I could go back and audit the class just to hear him read aloud. He's one of the best instructors I've ever had. Take his class if you can!
Woodard is an awesome teacher and really nice. Even though the notes in class is the same exact thing from your textbook I recommend you go to lecture because just listening to him helps you remember the stuff better for the exams. If you want an easy A I suggest you take this class.
woodard is the boss. he is such a good teacher that he goes to Europe to do lectures and actually had people from Europe come to see him here...his voice may make you laugh at first but its all part of the experience...hes also pretty funny, easy stuff if you pay attention and do the practice questions in the back of the book..great class great guy
The class is really fun, and Woodard is hilarious. I love this class. Do the practice exams in the book, and the tests are super easy. He is so charming. I love to listen to his voice. I think I'm in love with him.
This was my favorite class at UB, and Woodard was my favorite teacher. He is extremely goofy. He cracks jokes that are so weird, theyre funny. He is extremely knowledgeable on his subject. The practice quizs in the book make up the quizs in class. The tests have a word bank for god sake. Very Very Easy.
in all of honesty, his class is easy if you put in alot of hours. i had the highest grades in his class, but during the finals week you will feel the burden when you have to memorize 167 pages of the book. He can pull anything out of those pages. i only recommend him if you have time for the class. his final exam is comprehensive. idk if he curves.
Roger D Woodard is awesome. He has the brain of God. He can come off as condescending but he is actually very very nice, even gentlemanly. He is helpful and his books are really easy and useful, also the Fasti Qs are a joke. He lectures in this booming voice which is awesome and he has this weird sense of humor, his class was so interesting.
Best class at UB. His lectures are pretty much word for word in the text but I'd still go to class because he makes it so much easier to learn. His tests are hard yet extremely manageable! Plus he's a beast and I love him :)
Brilliant voice, I was intimidated by him, at least partially due to his larger than life demeanor in class, but he is one of the most articulate, polite, and intelligent men I have met, and I can only hope to one day be like him. Attendance not mandatory. 3 exams, no final, non-comprehensive. 6 sets of Q's counts as final. Lots of memorization.
Woodard was the best professor I have ever had at UB. His class is essentially storytime but it is kind of tough if youre not good at memorizing, but I would go to lectures because he is just that interesting.
Woodard's Myth and Religion class is pretty easy. He makes you buy his books which is kind of lame but they are helpful. There is a series of book quizzes that are really easy if you just skim the notes in the back. These count as an entire test. Last half of the semester the few in class quizzes were quizzes where the class worked together
Class is Great It's like story time. He's a great lecturer. You can take note based on the keywords he puts up or you can use his book either way it's pretty simple. Just keep up with the readings for his pop quizzes!
Excellent lecturer. He keeps the interest level up and most of his lectures were close to full- impressive in a class of 400+. The tests require a LOT of memorization and studying- can't just show up unprepared and pass. book quizzes are an easy A and count as a test grade. overall, a wonderful professor- class is like story time.
Prof. Woodard knows so much about the ancient gods only because he is one himself. The immense glory radiating out from his person is almost too much for us mere mortals to handle. The material in his class may be confusing, those gods all have way too similar of names, but the class is worth taking just to hear the voice of such a mythical being.
Best teacher I've had at UB. I would take anything he teaches, he's hilarious and interesting and a great teacher!
Mahabarata. Lots of stories tests have a word box but there are lots of names and memorization. He has THE voice.
He is a fantastic lecturer. In a class of 400 kids, he doesn't need a microphone. Very amiable and approachable. There's a TON of memorization, but it's manageable. There are pop quizzes on the reading, so be sure to come to class prepared!
GREAT lecturer!!! Difficult class though... much more memorization then one would think!
Very difficult class. The professor has a great speaking voice but the amount of information makes him very difficult to follow. The course was interesting, but it's really not the best choice for an elective. He was very nice though. I liked that he would walk around and shake people's hands. Would take him again for a course with less breadth.
Great teacher! He is a really nice guy, and can be funny at times too. The class is really interesting, but it is a TON of memorizing. Make sure to come to class though because he has a few random pop quizzes. Overall, I loved the class and I learned a lot!
Woodard himself is very entertaining and does a great job of making the subject matter interesting. He puts on great performances every class. However, you will have to take notes, attend class and study to pass. There are three or four tests and about six sets of ten one-word-answer questions over the course of the semester.
quite possibly the best professor ive had at UB. Amazing voice that must have came from one of the gods he teaches about. Makes class fun and entertaining. I wish he was the professor for all my classes.
Dr. Woodard is by far my favorite professor. You can tell as he speaks that he loves what he does. Although he does not use power points, the way he speaks is so entertaining that you don't get bored easily. If you have the chance, definitely take his class!
Great Professor. Classes are very interesting as he makes it lively. But yo! its not a easy class.Lots of memorization.Stay away if you would not have enough time to study for it.especially Engring students thinking of taking it as a Gened.
If you like flashcards and can memorize easily, you'll be fine. you will not succeed without the books, esp the 'manual', which IS the lecture for the entire class. class is a waste of 50 min, because the manual already does everything for him. Mandatory attendance, childish assignments, pop quizzes on tiresome/useless reading...glad it's over
Take this class.
Are you willing to learn? Are you willing to spend some time taking an interesting class about mythology of different cultures? If the answers are yes then there should not be a problem with working hard. If you don't want to work hard then don't take it. Professor Woodard is AN amazing teacher and taking his class was great.
Prof. Woodward is truly a great professor. He made mythology fun and interesting. It's a shame this is his last semester at UB, because mythology will not be the same without him!!!
Overall, extremely knowledgeable professor with an unusual funny wit. He had us students cracking up at 9 in the morning. Definitely very qualified to teach the class and very passionate about Greek! However, he is not that great at breaking down the ancient language in a way that a student in an introductory class can easily understand.
Dr. Woodard was an AMAZING professor! He's got a great sense of humor and is good with college students. He knows a lot about the ancient Greek language, its history and evolution. He has students recite the Greek words they need to know, and it really helps for memorization. Linguistics majors will love his class!
This teacher was amazing. He goes out of his way to meet everyone and remembers personal details about each student. He is an impassioned orator, and his lectures are always funny and interesting. There is a lot of reading involved, about which he does give five-point pop quizzes. Study resources are great. This was my favorite class this semester.
There is nothing about this course, and this professor, that isn't awesome. A great deal of reading, but just do it and you'll be fine. Everything's very straight-forward. Just sit back and prepare to be entertained.
Woodard is a great professor! There was a lot of reading, and you needed to attend the class due to pop quizzes, but it's not hard to get a good grade, or even pay attention. He almost makes the notes theatrical, its awesome.
He is the greatest. You will not want to miss class. I recommend it even to people who don't need to take it. There is a lot of reading but it's fairly interesting. The names can be hard to memorize, but I felt it was worth it for the fun I had.
He is an awesome funny guy. Very theatrical! But the class load is alot, there is alot of reading every night, with pop quizzes and questions due for the reading. But it's an interesting subject, so to me it's like story time. Interesting reading materials.
Two words.. awesome guy!
Was incredibly interesting - hated religion before but really got into the class. Is able to keep you entertained in what could be a very dull class!
If you're looking for an easy A, this is not the class for you. However, this is defintely one of the most interesting and overall best classes i have taken. Dr woodard is very easy to listen to and if you put in a little effort you can easily get at least a B. While a little bit of work at times,I highly reccomend.
Hands down my favorite Professor at UB yet. He is an extremely good orator and you can tell he knows his stuff. His tests are fair. Most of it is directly from practice tests. Never seen so many students go up to a professor at the end of a course and tell them how much they enjoyed it. Subject material is also EXTREMELY interesting.
"The Woodster" aka Roger Woodard is a straight up beast. His awesomeness is second only to that of Chuck Norris. This guys voice is absolutely unbelievable. No words possess the descriptive power to describe his voice during a lecture so i can't even explain it to you. Just take the class...
This guy is by far the best professor I have had at UB so far. His lectures are second too none. A voice that rivals Morgan Freeman.
Woodard's a great guy, but way too intense for a 100 level Gen Ed course. This class LEGIT has more required work than the 400 level course Im taking and the tests just cover way too much material. I'm passing,but...You really should read *ALL* of the reviews on here before taking him. Same course has 4 prefixes. APY majors: AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!
Interesting subject but WAY to intense. It is very difficult for a gen ed. The tests are extremely hard as they cover a lot of small irrelevant details. I do not know how he has these good of ratings...I guess cause he sounds like morgan freeman.
He is an AMAZING professor. He is very enthusiastic about the subject and has a GREAT story telling voice which is great for the class. There are 3 books to buy for the class which are used frequently. There are a few pop-quizzes (keep up with Golden Apples readings for these), 3 exams.
Professor Woodard is EXTREMELY into GreekRoman Mythology. All of his lectures are interesting to listen to and won't make you fall asleep. Exams are very detailed but are taken straight from the practice exams in the textbooks, so be sure to study them diligently.
This man sounds like Zeus came down from Mount Olympus to bless us all with his time and energy. Every class was captivating and he tells the stories with such passion. This was my favorite class last semester and I would just sit in lecture if I had time just to hear his voice
Professor Woodard was one of my favorie professors. His lecture was extremely interesting, and the tests are not hard. He gives random quizes sometimes, but if you do the reading you will be fine. If you're a good student and you follow your syllabus you'll pass.
Woodard is by far the best professor I've ever had. It helps that I like mythology, but he far surpassed my expectations. Every class was interesting and he just loads you up with information, but in a way that is understandable and clear. He obviously likes this stuff, and the way he presents it is like a theatrical display. Would recommend.
If you don't like reading/won't have the time to dedicate an hour or more per night to reading, this class is not for you. He gives pop quizzes on the readings and it is impossible to pass these unless you read (the book is also very dense). The tests are difficult and he is disorganized. He didn't give me my grade for exam 1 until after exam 2.
Woodard is an amazing lecturer who turns every myth into a story. He is a great professor although his class is extremely demanding for a gen ed. Lots of reading assigned mostly on a daily basis and there are random reading and attendance quizzes. The tests are very similar if not identical to the practice exams in the manual.
Attendance counts as 10% of your grade so you need to go. Readings are assigned every night but they arent too long. Prof. Woodard is really engaging in class so the lectures are worth going to.
I'm a CS major so I took this class only to satisfy a requirement. His lectures are very interesting and he speaks loud and clear. I barely did any work, save for making flash cards a few days before each test. Practice tests in the book only cover about 75% of the tested material. This class is an easy B, and an easy A if you do the reading.
Prof. Woodard is a smart professor and goes into great depth in his class. However, if your need a humanities credit continue looking. His entire class is based around memorizing all the little names of gods and heroes. I took intro to Chinese at ub and that class required less memorization than RSP113. Please do not take this class.
Failed his useless class 3 times. Then got a degree in philosophy. Fluent in 4 languages with an engineering degree. Really boring class with lots of memorization of names. Tells cool stories though.
Very theatrical and interesting lectures. Tests are verbatim from the book, and reading quizzes from the other book weekly.
He makes you buy 3 textbooks and he wrote 2 of them. Theyre almost identical to the lectures so if you dont understand what he says in lecture the readings wont make sense either. Tried to get help studying and he didnt seem to care at all. Tests are all small details, if you miss one class youre lost. Nice guy, not a great prof IMO.
I took this class as a pathway during the fall COVID semester 2020. Honestly, I had higher expectations for this class. Lectures are very boring and seem to drone on forever. The exams also seemed as though they were designed for students to do poorly. There are no partial right answers on exams, which really makes it harder to succeed.
DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS!!!! Before I enrolled in this class I came to this page and saw his ratings then thought he wouldn't be bad. BUT NOW I WISH I HAD DORP THE CLASS WHEN I HAD THE CHANCE. His class was the worst for me in my opinion. He will make you buy 2 books that he wrote. The books don't even cover all of the details, only his point of view.
he is the worst professor in the school well def the most boring. listening to his lectures is like listening to paint dry and I forgot to mention u won't remember a single thing because nothing has more significance than the next, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU CAN READ CHANGE TO SOMETHING ELSE!!!!!!!!! don't do it!!!!!
Terrible class. Lectures consist of him just speaking for 50 minutes straight, often leaving one topic and then coming back to it later, making note taking difficult. Half the stuff on tests are only in the book, not the lecture, and ofcourse he wrote them and they cost $300 together. Tests are super tough with trick questions, terrible class.
His lectures are monotonous and droning, and he spends lecture time telling stories that are incredibly detail heavy. On the tests, the questions are very specific and are set up to be trick questions, almost designed for the student to fail. Terrible professor, don't take him.
If you are a visual learner do not take online CL 113. This man provided recorded lectures with no powerpoint or notes. All the tests and quizzes were based off of hour long lectures of him just talking.
Asked Woodard for different exam time because I lived overseas. We agreed to 7 AM EST. Weeks later on exam day at 7 AM EST, he says I got the time wrong and can't do exam. He insisted we agreed on 7 AM GMT. Had to involve his superior to get him to be reasonable with me. I learned some pretty cool things but the way he treated me was unprofessional
Amazing class and amazing professor. You can tell reviews are fake when they say things like "this myth professor made me memorize the names of gods and goddesses." Yes, that's what the class is about. It does also require attending lectures, taking good notes, and studying. Wow, what a concept! It's a fun class, definitely take it.
