He was hard to follow in class.
very very hard, we didnt even get to derivatives until the last month of the semester. we spent so much time explaining the mathematical reasons for the easier way of doing things. i managed a C and i had taken claculus in high school!
very helpful if you go to his office for extra help
I had Rohn for 4 classes. He was solid for upper-division courses. Long live The Wolf .

so great! he knows what he's talking about, and we got way past derivatives, we were ahead of the other classes. long live england!
easily the most brilliant man ive ever met in my entire life. he has the entire calc book memorized and even corrects it at times. all he wants is for people to get over thier egos and ask queastions. extremely difficult teacher.
Incredible professor. This man is undesputably a genius and has a complete mastery of his subject matter. He makes this that are quite difficult seems extraordinarily easy. Class was quite enjoyable, and he was readily available for questions or concerns.
Amazing teacher. Take him if you need Math. He will help you on anything. He goes off on random tangents some times, but he is the most effective Math teacher I've had at College of Charleston.
great teacher, very helpful. I had to drop but failing the class has made me smarter. I'm sure that I'll pass it next semester.
I couldn't stand Prof England!!!!!
He is the carziest person that I have ever met. He class is hard, but if you go to class he esplans everything over and over and tell you what will be on the test. I would take him next semester but he is not teaching the class that i need.
The best teacher I have had at the College. His class is hard, but if you go to class and do your homework you should get a good grade in his classes. If you ever need help he will always give it, especially great for upper level Calc classes.
he sucks and moves to fast in class. He needs to letp up on the 60 gal of coffee everyday.
The guy's a genius therefore his class is very hard. Doing homework is not enough- you need to STUDY every night. He is a fair grader; make sure you can handle abstract thinking; A real nice guy but class is quite hard.
rohn is awesome, but hard. you better do the homework, usually class consists of him going over problematic examples from the hw, so if you didn't do the hw, you are lost... very animated and fun, had him for 120 too
A little zany at times, but very entertaining. His class is not too hard, but you have to do the homework and go to class. Really nice guy, knows his stuff, wants you to be a better math student. My second time having him, highly recommend him.
he has all the problems from the book memorized... if youre not good at math dont take him, he's impossible to follow.
England is amazing - he really does know the textbook cover to cover. DO THE HOMEWORK (or at least half). He does not give 'hard' tests, but you have to know the material pretty well. No attendance policy at all (don't skip too much though or you will fall behind very quickly - I made this mistake)
Professor England is the MAN. I came straight from High School to Calc II and he was the best teacher I could have ever had. He is thorough with his explaining and he is a genius. He knows the book like the back of his hand, but if you do the homework, the tests are fair. He is always happy to help.
Calc2 is hard no matter who you take. He is a great teacher that knows what he is doing. He will answer your questions in class, so you should be able to keep up with the material. Expect to put in hours and hours of studying per week though!
If you have working knowledge of Calc1 then this is a breeze. Chapter 11 IS difficult just b/c of material, but HW & his notes prepares you for it. Test STRAIGHT forward, nothing tricky. Very fair man. No attendance policy- with just minimal effort A is attainable. I got a B b/c I didn't go effort.
Took Calc 2 with him. He is an awesome teacher, his tests are hard, but if you attend class and do the homework they aren't impossible. I got a B+ in the class. Very helpful and he's pretty funny too. He really knows what he's talking about and explains things very well.
Very smart guy. He is a fun, though eccentric, teacher who is very excited about math and physics. He is great. A very fair grader, though his exams are usually tough.
one of the best professors. knows the material backwards and forwards. flexible office hours, offers group study sessions. goes above and beyond the call of duty to help. got a B+, but couldn't have been happier, i learned so much. offers academic advice and help after his class too. overall: great
Just as long as you do the homework, you'll be just fine. If you need him, his office hours are very reasonable.
He is an awesome teacher! I learned SO much. He is very helpful and he doesnt try to trick you on tests. He is straight foward! Take him if you actually want to learn!
Goes through everything in little or no time. Too fast of a teacher!!
Very helpful, but lets face it, Calc 3 is hard. He is terribly smart but amazingly can still lecture on your level. His tests and quizzes are hard (just because of the material) but fair. If you take this class, he is your best bet and you will be sure to know your stuff because even though this class is hard, he teaches you a lot.
He is a good teacher. You just have to come to class and do the homework and you will be fine.
He's a great (though eccentric) guy who teaches a rather difficult class. He tries quite hard to explain everything to where it is understandable. His tests can be rough, and his homework seems a bit excessive. His grading is somewhat leniant, however, and some credit is given if you had some idea of what you were doing.
everyone knows the stereotypical math professor? HE understands the subject well but cant finish one example without going off on 10 minute tangent. if you want to do well in cal2, highly reconsider another professor.
Doc Eng is the bomb!! He is hilarious and such a good teacher. Really knows his stuff. Makes you laugh every day in class--don't miss! His hearing is a little bad from years of basement band practice. Haven't met his son yet but sounds like a winner. If you really want an A--get cooking! Roast beef is his fave. Too bad he's married!
My favorite math teacher of all time. I looove Dr. England. If you have an ounce of humor you will also love him. He's really not that hard. Just do the homework and go to class. Hottie :)
Very tough teacher. Great guy, but seriously difficult. Very intimidating, he expects you to just know it without much explanation. If your math background is slightly shaky, find another professor!
I love Dr. England. He is a great teacher. He makes you learn the material, wants his students to do well, explains clearly and is very helpful if you visit him in his office hours. After taking this class I declared a math major and requested him as my advisor! (and he is really funny hell definately make you laugh in class all the time) TAKE HIM
The man cracks me up! The class was enjoyable because he is just too funny. All in all the class is not that hard...just do the homework and when you don't understand something go to his office hours...he's very approachable. Take him if you can!
I'm no math major, so I had a pretty difficult time in his class. I found him to be intimidatingly intelligent. He comes off as a bit of a snob. He has the entire book memorized and loves to boast it. He worked for the Dept of Defense, and it shows. If you aren't a math lover, this may be a difficult one for you.
The course is hard but I found Dr. England to be extremely helpful, he will go out of his way to help you, especially if you have ADD
i took calc1 at a different college last year, and i found it to be much more difficult here. not sure if it was because of england, or cofc. he's a smart & funny guy and will add points to quizzes and tests if the average is low. must know your algebra & precalc or it will come back to haunt you.
England is different. He is easy to be intelectually intimidated by because he is a math genius. (He used to work for the government doing some kind of top secret mathematical analysis during the cold war.) He is on the other hand, on of the funniest and most compassionate professors I have ever had.
I loved this class! Doc Eng is the man! (He even has a facebook fan club group!) He is hilarious, brilliant, and grades pretty easily. He wants you to do well! Go see him during his office hours--it helped me tremendously. I would also recommend keeping up with the homework. If you have to take Calculus at CofC, get him!!
England is the BEST professor i've had so far! He is extremely smart and very funny. He gets excited and tends to move quickly through problems but if you ask questions he'll answer them. He tries really hard to make sure everyone understands and his tests and quizzes are straight forward. Do the homework and you'll pass no problem. TAKE HIS CLASS!
One of my favorite teachers. His intelligence is pretty intimidating because he is brilliant. The course isn't bad if you go to class and do your work. He will explain exactly whats on the tests exept for one or two questions.
hilarious. goes off on tangents a lot. i made a really bad grade, but it was my fault. do the homework and go to the study sessions every week. he is really very helpful. there is a quiz or test EVERY lab day. if you must take calc, take him. you'll love him. great guy!
Probably the best professor I've ever had. If you just want a good grade, take someone else. If you want feel like you're actually in college, take England. Smart as all get-up and is crazy as a three-dollar bill, but he genuinely cares and wants you to do well. Extremely entertaining to talk to in and outside class and always available to help.
Dr. England is hilarious, extremely willing to help students, and great at tying math into the interests of his students. Take his class if at all possible.
he's hilarious and an awesome teacher.... extremely helpful if you go to him during office hours... take him!
Dr. England is tough. You'll be really prepared for the final but if you're not a math major, try to take someone else. Its definitely a challenge and you'll spend hours just on calc every day. If you're a math major, you'll absolutely love him.
If you're not a computer science or math major, do not take England. He's hilarious, sure, but his class is impossible for non-math-inclined people. Treats his study session every week like it's mandatory class (that some people can't attend) and gives a quiz or test every week. I felt lucky to make a C.
I took England for Honors Calc II. The first day of class, he went on this tirade about the bookstores...which scared several people out of our class. He knows his stuff, and honestly wants his students to do well. I get things pretty easily, but objectively I would say it's a tough class. We started out with 20 people, and we finished with 9.
Great professor! He gets really excited about math. I had to miss the first week of class b/c I was in the hospital and he really helped me get back on track. Go to his office hours-sometimes the class was confusing but he really clarifies everything during office hours. Probably the best math professor at the college.
Prof. England is a great teacher. I would definitely recommend taking his class. I'm not a math major, and I still did well. He's willing to go the extra mile to help out his students and he gives weekly optional study sessions that are extremely helpful. If you need this class, TAKE HIM!
Please, for your sake, do the homework, and do it on time so that you can ask questions in time. His tests are hard when you take them, but by the next test, the previous material is elementary and you look back and wonder what you were thinking! Funny guy, very helpful, wish I put in more effort, because he is a valuable resource on cofc!
Really tough subject, but england does everything he can to make it interesting. He gives you some examples of real life applications, and if all else fails he will tell you something random and interesting. The the freakin' homework, and attendance is essentially mandatory. dont slack and you'll @ least pass.
Calc is a tough class yet Dr. England is a great teacher. If you do not understand anything going on, GO SEE HIM DURING OFFICE HOURS! He practically did the homework for me helping me solve problems in a clear step by step manner. He will challenge you, but if you show him that you are working hard, you will do well.
Doing homework and coming class is a must in order to understand the material! He gives quizzes once a week, which help boost your grade. Always gives extra credit on tests. Goes at a very fast pace through material, but he is only trying to prepare you for Cal 120 so I wouldn't recommend if 111 is the highest math level you are taking.
Calc2:England is an entertaining person but gets off track easily and then speeds through the lesson to finish before class is over. He also skips steps assuming the students should already know how to do it. Nice guy, tough to learn from. Don't take him unless you have a very good comprehension of all the trig idents, limits, and calc 1 skills.
While he is a hilarious teacher and highly entertaining, he can be hard to follow. However, if you simply ask a question or suggest you don't understand he'll gladly re-explain to make you comprehend. You can tell he wants the best for you. Overall I highly recommend him. Obviously the subject is hard but he is a great teacher to have,
very hard. you must do the book problems and study 4 hours a day if you want to do well. I had to drop out!
Great professor. Material is presented clearly and since it is an honors class, he goes over stuff fast, but nothing you can't follow. Entertaining and random, loves to teach, clearly wants his students to do well in class and is always ready to help. ADVICE: if you are not good at math, or not willing to work, DON'T take honors.
SO HARD. Quizzes once a week. Tests are really hard. It was the first class I actually thought I would fail. If you suck at math, don't take him.
The class is very hard. He moves fast through problems and often skips many steps. He expects you to be an expert in Pre-Calc and if you aren't then the class is even harder. Quizzes are once a week and they are very difficult. The tests are extremely hard. If you go to his office hours he is very helpful and I would recommend doing that.
I have never failed a math test, quiz, or course in my life until i had Professor England this semester. I want to be a math major and his class has me rethinking my career choice. He is not helpful what so ever. I found my self just writing down the notes he put up on the board everyday not understanding a thing. my advise DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Ugh, calculus. England is a funny guy. But he expects you to be awesome at pre-calc. Quizzes once a week. I've made it through the class okay, but only with LOTS of work. I don't know if I could ever recommend a professor for calculus - but I don't think England is the easiest out there.
England is the man. First, let me say that I hate math. I had to retake pre-calc. England has a particularly unique sense of humor. I had a great time in his class and only a little bit of trouble understanding. It seemed everyone else had a hard time, but if you just do the homework its fine. He tells you the type of q's on his quizzes and tests.
By far my favorite math teacher I've ever had. He puts it in a way that makes it look much less tedious. I have never been good at math, nor have I ever even liked it, but this is totally different. If you go to his office, he is more than nice and helpful. His sense of humor makes me laugh everyday in class.
great guy. always guaranteed to have an exciting class. This class should be an easy A for EVERYONE. all you gotta do is ask for help and he will do everything within his power to make sure you get the grade you deserve. If you have a chance to take him for any class don't hesitate to do so.
i really liked him, but not the way he taught. hes too smart and teaches very quickly, skipping steps, or not explaining steps that would be of help to understand. he teaches advanced/upper level math classes, and i think that he thinks that we are all gifted in the world of math. i just prefer a math teacher to step me thru a math class.
Pre-Cal is difficult, so you want the best possible professor, and that's England. He goes out of his way to help you: extra weekly homework sessions, loads of office hours, and curves on exams. He truly cares about his students and has a passion for his subject. Seems a little crazy the first day but stick in there. You won't regret it.
Prof. England was hilarious!! The class itself is hard but he works well with the students. I used his office hours alot and he was always willing to help. The homework is not mandatory but will definitely help prepare you for the test. He would go over 2 or 3 questions from the homework if students had them. Weekly quizzes and test make up grade.
I loved Professor England. He can be a bit rude at times towards the class, saying that this is stuff you should already know, but he is great! Final is departmental, but he prepares you so well for it. Tests are pretty tricky, but he does curve the grades most of the time! Great Professor! Does quiz weekly.
An extremely helpful prof. He's quick in class because he has to be with the material he has to go over but go to his office and he'll spend as much time as needed for you to do great. Do all of the homework he assigns and the departmental final is crazy easy. Funny kind of sarcastic. Wish I could have taken his Calc I class.
He's a really good professor, also really funny. He's quite scatter brained in class and goes through things very quickly. I had him MWF and we took about 3-4+ pages of notes each class, so be prepared to write. His homework isn't required but it'll really help you for the test and weekly quizzes.
England is great! I am not exactly a "math person" but needed Calc 1 for my Biology degree. He curves his tests so much, that I received a B on both of them instead of my original C's. He's very helpful in office hours and make sure you introduce yourself and get to know him! He's absolutely hilarious and I think he's definitly one of my favorites!
Absolutly one of the best professors I have ever had. Teaches the material quickly and effectivly and throws in some very funny jokes now and again. About the class itself: do the homework the day you have the class or the next day, if you do that it is easy. Practice, practice, practice. I didn't work that hard (<12 hours a week) and got an A
Absolutely amazing class. I came entered with AP Calc AB credit in High School which was an extensive course but allowed time to let things soak. In England's class, however, you are pressured to memorize and think quickly. Effectively teaches material and lenient grading. Do the homework!! I'm a Math major, but if you practice you'll do well.
I LOVED him as a teacher, hated his class. I'm not a math person so this was a difficult class. He moves very quickly and expects you to remember everything from Calc1. Extremely helpful if you ask but he'll let you know if he thinks something is stupid. Funny, sarcastic, a bit mean at times. Do the work, when he says 2+ hours a night, he means it.
The worst calculus teacher I've ever had in my life. I've taken calculus twice. Once in Highschool without AP and once over the summer.I had an A in both of my classes before. He teaches very philosophically, and provides little to no examples. He's extremely demeaning and nasty during class and expects you to know ALL TRIG FROM PRECALC. AVOID.
England was a fantastic professor despite some of these negative reviews. I had zero interest in calc before this class, but he made it fun and interesting to learn. He will go out of his way to help you, but he expects you to work hard and will let you know if he thinks you aren't. He's a tough teacher, but you can easily get an A if you work. :)
England was a great professor. He was so passionate about what he did, that learning math wasn't so bad. I had never made an A in math before his class. He is an engaging professor and will go out of his way to help you. But, you must put in the work: it takes time and effort. A's aren't freely given out! I would recommend him to anyone!
best teacher every, he will tell you what problem you need to study for the exam, and the test questions are like the homework, so the test are easy as long as you do the homework. so no surprises. do a lot of example problems in class. and NO webassign so don't need to waste money to buy the code.
Good guy, class goes by fast, pretty reasonable on tests and quizes.
He's very enthusiastic about math, and it really makes class enjoyable. He's funny too! I've actually enjoyed this class, but this is not some easy course. It's college, you have to learn. And he expects you to be a student. I would highly recommend him if you aren't a deadbeat student.
Gives pretty good lectures, but doesn't always explain how he got there. Really try not to miss class, even though he doesn't take attendance. DO THE HOMEWORK! (not for grade)
He teaches clearly and will do each step for a problem as necessary. Sometimes he lectures on us about how "stupid we are because of the educational problem in America" but other than that you will learn a lot. He doesn't take attendance but YOU NEED TO GO or your will miss out. Homework isn't required but you'll want to do it or you wont pass.
I was extremely fearful of math. Just finished summer calc & should have a B+. Prof. England is the reason why I improved. He's incredibly smart, funny, and willing to help. Homework is extremely helpful for test prep. Ex-navy guy, so at times he's salty, but it's necessary. Plus he's hilarious, & made math fun- a 2 hour everyday class at that!
This professor is great. I enjoyed his class a lot. I took him for summer II, which is pretty intense if you haven't taken a calculus class in a while. Go to class, do the homework (not mandatory). He gives points on tests for steps you complete toward getting solution, so a small mistake won't completely ruin a problem. I will be taking him again
England is great! He genuinely wants you to succeed. Neither homework nor attendance is mandatory but if you do both of them you are almost guaranteed to succeed. Ask lots of questions in class he loves it. He's got a soft spoken voice but if you pay attention to what he's saying he's got a hilariously sassy personality. 10/10 would recommend
Absolutely great teacher. He won't hand you an easy grade, but will do anything in his power to make sure you learn the material. He can be too fast in class for us humans, but will answer any questions and slow down. I wish he would have taught me all of my math, I'm sure I would have done better. 4 tests, 1 final, 9 quizzes. Curves tests often.
England is the worst math professor I have had. I've never made below a B in any college-level math class, and I was doing so poorly in his class that I had to withdraw to avoid harming GPA. The class was not mandatory for me, but still extremely disappointing. He tends to belittle students if they do not show the same mathematical genius he has.
He's mean and degrades students for asking questions. If you don't do the problems the way he teaches he will mark them wrong.
Prof England teaches pre-calc like the students are in a calc 2 class. He expects everyone to know how to do something after going over it once. He often rants about the primary school system in the US and how calculators make students dumb. Do the homework or you won't do well in the class at all!
Brilliant mathematician, but should not be teaching pre-calculus anymore.
This class is so freaking hard and professor England makes it worse. I wouldn't take him. He makes it boring and just tells us how to do it, we don't do anything in class except listen. He goes through the course so fast, if you don't understand something, we are already on the next subject.
you'll learn a lot, however, he is a jerk. He has been insanely difficult to contact, non-approachable outside of class, never showed to office hours. I highly recommend you learn to live in the math lab if calculus isn't your thing, because England does not care whether you pass or fail.
This professor is awesome and highly intelligent. He teaches calculus without and calculator and I still understand him!!!! My precalc professor was a nightmare and yet I still understood professor England and I took this class during the summer in a month!!!! Absolutely love him and he held a hour long study session after every class
He is a great teacher his summer class of calculus is a lot of hard-work. He is willing to put in the time to help you succeed, visit his help sessions and be sure to ask questions no matter how dumb they may seem he is willing to answer them. If sees that you put in work he will be willing to put in the time to help you. Watch out for test 3.
I've never been a huge fan of math classes, or very good at them, but this was by far the best I've taken. If you do the homework you won't have much issue, but if you slack off you'll be screwed. If you ask a stupid question he'll chew you out, but he's actually pretty funny.
A very well educated and professional teacher. He cares and wants you to learn the material. You fail only if you don't put in the work.
