This guy will put you to sleep. But he's really easy. There is a one page response paper due every week and three tests. I would not take him again though, at least not in the morning.
huge discussion class, was pretty easy. participate and pass with an A. 2 tests of full hour of writing, your wrist will hurt afterward.
he's not hard but its a real **** to try and stay awake in that class in the morning. The whole class is lecturing...not fun
Why is it that when the teacher is hard that is the worst? He is a fair grader, probably the most fair I have come across. YOu get what you deserve and that says a lot. So if you failed then it was your own fault. He does lecture a lot.
This class was okay.. you can go both ways, depending on the work you do. If you do the one page papers he gives out every week and do poorly on his exams, you can still pass. The exams weren't that hard, but he does tend to bore you to sleep.
Difficult subject matter presented in a logical fashion. Lectures are long and sometimes unengaging. Very clear about what is expected of you as a student. Available for one on one when needed.
philosophy sucks and so does he
Prof. Garrett has no enthusiasm in his voice, which makes staying awake in class difficult. I could be interested in the material, if the process of teaching it wasn't so boring.
He will bore you to tears, but he is a good professor. He is helpful and friendly.
The class itself was boring because he lectures throughout the whole class period. However, the assigments and the exams are easy.
If you have any sleeping problems, this is the class you need! He seems easy but if you agree with him or know what's a reading all about just keep it to yourself.I personally don't like how he grades and/or agree with the way he grades ur personalopinion
Oh my god!!!! He is soooooooo boring, i luv phil but he needs to rethink his strategy in regards to teaching as a whole. The material is cool but since he is soooo boring the class just drags on and on and on and on!!!!!!!
He lectures a lot but I think hes a good teacher. If you can find a way to pay attention its not that bad. Do the papers and you'll be fine. Participate in discussions for a better grade.
I would NOT recommend him. He is extremely boring and is very unorganized and unclear. If you have the 530-8 class, I highly recommend taking a nap before you go.

YOU CANNOT STAY AWAKE IN THIS CLASS. IF you suck up and participate you'll probably be okay. Just go to class, hand in the papers and take the exam. It's not hard, HE'S JUST SO BORING. Waste of my life.
Would it be so terrible to inform the students of which philosophers will be in the Essay questions? Other than that, the class was informative when I could manage to stay awake.
He's not THAT bad. Yes, his voice is odd, and will cause you to drift off. He's very structured (he's like 85 years old)&if you ask a question at the wrong time he'll blow you off, but it's funny. If ur a major, there's no avoiding him, he's everywhere....

An unyielding and unhelpful professor who is irritating and VERY monotoned. He should really just retire. I don't recommend taking him.
Not only boring, but also close-minded. He should definitely not be teaching college philosophy. He asks for your opinion on the papers and in class, but then arrogantly refutes it. If you don't like being pissed off, don't raise your hand in this class.
First of all, why would anyone wanna major in philosophy? Garret is old and he does not explain things very well..and he wears the same clothes everyday..he his very boring and he does not ever concede to the opinion of others.
Professor Garret is the worst professor I've ever encountered. He asks for your input in class and then dismisses it.Don't particpate unless you want to be cut down.Do the papers, study for the exam and you'll pass but don't take him if you dont have to.
Horrible professor...i would never take him again, he is unclear and shuts down anything you say. He will give you bad grade on your on opinion...AVOID TAKING HIM.
Really boring, easy to fall asleep in class. I got an A without reading the textbook at all... you just have to pretend to be interested.
Easy teacher. He IS boring, but so what..deal with it. Just do the readings (very little reading...could get away with just reading the intro to the readings and taking notes in class). Easy assignments and very fair exams.
Only boring if your not into it. He explains concepts as best as he can, and is in fact a good teacher. He is supposed to refute your answers, he is a philosophy teacher people! Havent you learned anything from Socrates? Easy going class, interesting conversations
such a boring class, you do learn if you pay attention, but he makes that impossible. instead of making it fun to participate, he argues with everything you say and turns it into a drawn out discussion so nothing gets covered. stay away.
He's not a bad teacher, he knows his stuff... But the man is the most boring dude i have ever met. His exams are not hard, unless you sleep in every class (i slept in a few thou) If you're takin this class only cuz you have to, but u r not interested in Phil. Don't take him, he'll bore u to death!
He's a really bad teacher. He's very harsh on the students. As much as we try he blows off really easily. Don't ever take him. Besides being boring he is the type of person that contradicts himself. It's bad id you ask questions or if you don't He's so unprofessional.
umm....not sure what to say really but he cant teach...he is boring...and he doesnt belong teaching at MSU...my advice is to just not take a class with him ever or anything to do with him...and if u have ever seen Ferris Buellers, this professor is like the professor in that movie....
Garrett is a good teacher, he knows his stuff well but he is so boring it is ridiculous. It's very difficult to pay attention and focus but if you can stay awake you'll do well on the tests.
AH! So boring. Definitely just like Ben Stein... he knows a lot about the various philosophers but makes you feel like a retard when you participate. That is, if you are awake to participate..
just simply boring and a complete prick, always try to make u look like a fool and is so fricking boring u can have coffee with u and still fall a sleep....beware....if u take him its going to be a long semester for you
The class and material were very boring. He is a hard grader but if you study and take notes you will do fine on tests.
Dr. Garrett is an old school philosophy professor who wants to hear that you know the concepts and ideas of the people he's teaching and not so much what you have to say. Once you get that, you'll do fine in his class.
Mr. Garrett is a pretty easy teacher, but he has no personality. He does everything like a robot. But overall, easy class.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. he talks for an hour and 15 mins straight and doesn't like to take questions or have participation. if he does take a question, he talkis for 10 more minutes without answering your question. very strict with homework and attendence. VERY BORING CLASS, unless you already COMPLETELY understand philo, don't take him.
Class is easy but Prof is boring
Plz do not, & i repeat do not take him. Obscenely boring class, hard grader, when asked a questions he rambles on about totally something else and then after like 10 mins or so goes back to answering the question, which at that time i don't even remember what was the question. he talks for hr and 15 straight, just like a robot, ohh & he wont help u
Garrett is quite boring, but he's a good professor because he is clear with what he says. His test are short answers and an essay; both the midterm and final were easy. Also, there are 12 short assignments- you only have to do 10.
Dr. Garrett is a great professor. I think that students think he's boring bc of his monotonous style, but his mind is quite acute. He helps the beginning student learn the nuances of philosophical inquiry, and he wants the best from the students who actually give a damn. I credit him for much of my love of philosophy. Garrett, play on, player!
This guy just rambles on for the entire class. He doesn't move from his special spot up against the black board. He doesn't have an email account so forget about contacting him via email. He's a grammer nazi! coming down heavy on those who have grammatical errors. He knows the material very well, he just LACKS people skills!!
I took Dr. Garrett for a few philosophy classes some years ago. He was an excellent professor. He prepared me well for graduate school. If you are interested in learning, take him. If you are interested in floating through college without learning anything, then go ahead and listen to the other stupid posts that criticize him.
Dr. Garrett is a very intelligent man, yet better suited for lectures than seminars. Discussions during his class are often thought-provoking and interesting, yet he interrupts the discussions much too frequently for 15 minute monologues crushing both agrument and enjoyment. The class would be much better if he simply allowed us to speak more.
Let make something very clear, he is extremely boring. And i give him props because he is very good at what he does but it's just so boring. The only good thing is he gives you 13 assignments and you only have to do 10 of them and the midterm isn't hard at all. I got a b+ and i never pay attention
Good professor... he is boring i will agree with that and there were a number of times i just couldnt keep my eyes open. But he knows the subject and he wants his students to participate. Easy midterm and having to do 7 out of the 10 HW assignments isnt tough, theyre easy 1 page papers... Overall easy class to get at least a B, tough to fail
When people ask questions, he is not trying to be rude by the way he answers. It's just part of philosophy (questioning questions). He actually appreciates input. The papers are easy and you only have to do 7/10, the midterm was easy and I never read, I just paid attention. I would reccomend taking him, there really is not much work or studying
the work isnt hard.there are 10 hw assignments total.you answer the questions he gives you in class.he takes attendance, so go!his voice NEVER changes (very boring) so avoid taking him in the morning!
I am a philosophy major. He is one of my favorite philosophy professors. He is extremely knowledgeable and does not dumb down the material in any way. Rather he does a very thorough job of explaining the relevant issues and arguments and tries to ensure that everyone understands him. If you are truly interested in the course material take him!
HE IS A HORRIBLE TEACHER. He does not care about anyone eleses thoughts, bc the philosophers are always right in his book. He is unfreindly, monotone voice, takes daily attendence, does very little explanation, I dropped him, bc I knew i'd faild... he taught me nothing in one month. 7 reaction essays-topics very diff at times. DONT TAKE 8AM ULL zZzZ
he's a nice guy, but the material is just boring.. the name of the course was "20th century civilization" but we didn't start anything on the 20th century until AFTER the midterm, which kinda ticked me off. the good thing is if you don't like to participate in class, it doesn't hurt your grade it only helps
Prof. Garrett is a nice guy, he can get pretty boring at times because his voice is very monotone. He explains material thoroughly during lectures and is easy if you pay attention. 7 one page homework assignments, Midterm, final, each worth 25 % of grade plus another 25% for attendance. Easy A if you read and pay attention.
extremely boring. gives one page papers on the reading due the following week. the readings are extremely short, like 2-5 pages. monotone voice and never gives a chance for students to speak. he talks the whole entire time. and he takes attendance every class. other than that, easy A. midterm and final only, no other tests/quizzes
Not a very interesting or engaging professor by far, but pretty easy to pass the class and end up with a good grade. Don't really need to do the reading, because most seminar discussions are based off of opinions and common sense. Also, he'll raise your grade up to one full letter if you participate enough.
This professor is TERRIBLE! He has to be the worst professor in the whole east coast. He accuses students of plagiarism with no proof. Do not take his class! I don't even know how he's employed.
Interesting class. 2 papers and 2 tests. Participating will help your grade, but not participating won't hurt it. I think he really is interested in hearing student's ideas even if sometimes it doesn't seem like it. If you pay attention, you'll do well.
nice guy. extreamly boring hard not to fall asleep. recommended speaking up and sitting infront to stay awake. have 10 sort essays(1 page) read from the book before everyclass. midterm and final are not accumulative. as long as u listen during class exams are easy. allowed to miss 2 classes and be late 2xs. pretty interesting if u get involved
Prof. Garrett is really really boring. I have learned to sleep with my eyes open. However, he is a nice guy and a really easy grader. 2 papers, a midterm and a final. Try to participate, although it may sometimes be impossible since he tends to shut everyone down in a heartbeat. Slightly sarcastic. However, grade is not based on participation. :/
I'm fairly certain this man will end up boring himself to death. It is next to impossible to pay attention in his class because your eyes just glaze over. He is rude to his students, is sarcastic with them and doesn't care what they have to say or what they think. I used to love 20th cent. history and now I can't stand it. Do not take his class.
Some of the other comments are a bit too harsh. If you hate philosophy or learning in general, it is not his fault. If you are actually interested in receiving an education, he teaches the content very well, and he is a very nice man. The class is rather easy and there are often class discussions.
The final grade is 25% attendance, 25% homework, 25% mid-term, 25% final. Each week you have to read about 2-8 pages and write a short one page paper about. There are ten papers in total to write, but you are allowed to miss three without penalty.
I took this class to fill some credits and requirements outside my major/minor, and since I enjoyed ETHICS thoroughly the previous year, I thought I'd enjoy American PHIL. No one has any business taking this class - ESPECIALLY GARRETT - unless you live for philosophy; by the end of the semester I fantasized about sawing my own foot off mid-lecture.
Garrett's class is not boring. There are intereactive class discussions, unlike most other classes which simply are just passive notetaking.
I am a Philosophy major and I found this Philosophy professor to be outdated and antiquated in his delivery. He lectures by standing in one spot for two hours and if you are not "appealing enough" to him, he will overlook you like yesterday's meatloaf. Socrates, Plato and Aristotle would be disappointed.
Most boring professor I have ever had, stand in one spot the entire lecture and is completely monotone
If you care about drinking, partying, and sleeping in rather than a serious education, it is understandable why you would not like Garrett. He does not modify his teaching to accommodate philistines. If you are interested in a serious education, you can learn a lot from him. He is a very nice man.
This teacher is a really hard grader. He expects us to fully understand something that we have little knowledge of. This is a GEN ED, not a second or third level philosophy class.
Boring is an understatement, this class is awful. The subject matter is interesting and compelling, but Garrett slowly kills it with his monotonous tone and pretentious mannerisms. Don't bother participating, you'll just be subjecting yourself to humiliation and poor self esteem. The work is easy to do and the standard tests are pretty simple.
He is the worst professor I've ever had. He is pretentious boring and inconsiderate of his students. He spends the first half hour talking about what he will talk about then crams all his notes into the last 3 min. I warn any one who is thinking of taking this class. Also, attendance is mandatory so u will be forced to sit through all his lectures
Worst.Professor.Ever.He is deathly boring and very monotone. He goes off on rants and often mummbles some of his words as if saying it to himself. He only gives 10 papers and you have to do 7.It's as if he expects you to memorize everything he says and expects a lot.Don't take him.
Long winded, monotonous, dull, and boring. He runs off on tangents and claims to not be a hard grader, I swear he was an English teacher in a past life, you loose points for one punctuation mistake. Book is difficult to read, the language is outdated but the overall material is interesting. I would not recommend this instructor to anyone.
BORING! The class itself is easy, but he talks in the same monotonous tone for the whole class period. Your grade is based on two 4-5 page essays, a midterm, and a final. If you participate and attend all classes, he will boost your grade up to a whole letter grade at the end of the semester. Read, participate, go to class, and you'll be fine
Not boring IF you are into the material (if philosophy is not your thing, avoid him). 2 tests, 2 papers, each worth 25% of the final grade. Graded fairly and provided good feedback. Encourages class discussion and boosts your grade if you talk. Focus more on the lectures than the materials (reading DOES help): that is what the tests are based on.
It's tough to understand the material because he never tells you when to take notes. He writes one word on the board IF YOUR LUCKY. Besides that expect barely any notes to study from when the midterm and finals come. Don't do it to yourself. You will just be nervous all semester
The class is super easy, but extremely boring. It's much more interesting if you participate. Don't expect him to spoon feed you notes, take your own based on what he says and the defenses and criticisms people bring up. His attendance policy is the biggest pain because you really would't miss anything important in class besides paper topics.
He gives 10 papers in which you only need to do 7 of them. If you do more he will drop the lowest grade per extra paper you do. However, you need to read the chapter and use quotes from it in order to get credit. He ALWAYS takes attendance so make sure you don't skip. His lectures are long but if you take notes you'll pass with at least a B.
Professor Garrett is a great guy. His lectures are sometimes dry but if you're interested in the material they're alright. Also a very easy grader
He is a very boring, professor who only speaks in monotone, but he is easy. He gives 10 essays (1 page long), and drops 3 lowest, easy grader. You must go to class and TAKE NOTES in order to pass. He gives 2 exams, both which are based on the notes taken down in class. if you do take this class take notes and do the essays you will pass
Very monotone, difficult to stay focused during his lectures. Nice guy but uninspiredboring. He likes to tell you what you are about to learn vaguely in the first half of class, but then he does not leave an ample amount of time to actually go into the material in detail. We fell way behind in our syllabus bc he is repetitious. 10 pg final paper
Very boring. Took at 8 am and had a hard time keeping my eyes open. I am very serious about my education, but this professor is not for me. I generally enjoy philosophy, however, this man is a snoozer.
Although he lacks energy, the class is pretty simple. He does lots of lecturing, but they can be interesting if you participate and test his theories. He likes that. He assigns 10-11, 250-word papers throughout the semester and you only have to complete 7. The papers aren't difficult and the mid-term and final are not bad. I'd take it again.
He is an older teacher so he never cancels class. He gives 10 1 page homework assignments to analyze a reading througout the semester and you only have to do 7. Doesn't really give 100s on homeworks and midterms and finals are easy. Didn't pay attention and the tests are explaining 4 words then a short essay which will be based on on hw topics
Assignments were such bull. I asked "How do you get a 5?" his reply "Write a 5 worthy paper." Suffice to say, I got all 4's on my papers... He LOVES Socrates. All he does is lean up against the chalkboard and drone on about him. All I did was sit and write down ideas for films and clubs I was in, in my notebook. Get the textbook, you need it!
