Mr. Hayes is an old school type of teacher. He has a lot of knowledge and has experienced a lot that he doesn't mind talking about. Lot of extra credit given. Take home tests. I highly recommend this history class for African American Emphasis.Trust me, you'll never forget this class. The material is very useful & discussions are always interesting.
Never really liked history but now it is cool. Also he give extra credit all the time so if you do those extra credit then you will pass no doubt.
OUTSTANDING TEACHER!If you want the truth & nothing but the truth then this is the class to take.Mr. Hayes is an extremely educated & straight forward teacher.I have taken him for both of my African American history courses and Government classes.Only 2 exams for his course, however plenty of extra credit given. You can speak how you feel in class
He is a good Professor and mentor. One of the best professors at ACC. He is very informative and wise.
As an African American woman, I was completely appalled by this teachers discussion. He often insults his students intelligence."I wonder why you have to go to ACC". He goes off on obsolete rants. Only 2 tests. OURS WERE NOT OPEN BOOK. They were matching. I didn't even need a book. Got all definitions from WIKIpedia. Take advantage of all ex.credit
I dropped this class after 3 or 4 RIDICULOUS lectures. Syllabus was misspelled and awful. Makes ignorant comments. Material is DUMBED WAY DOWN.I was looking forward to an Af Am Hist class but encountered nothing but foolishness. Embarrassing. Not for serious students attempting to learn something. Still want my money back.
The worst teacher I have ever had out of my entire college career. Went to one class and dropped after making students feel worthless and a failure for not knowing history. Felt like he was slightly racially inclined and just an awful instructor. Mentions on the first day how only 15% of the class pass his first exam. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS.
Mr. Hayes is an awesome professor and very intelligent. When I first took his class he gave us the same speech about how many of his students drop his class and don't pass. I bypassed that speech and stayed in his class and it was worth it. I received and A in his class for American History 1&2!!!
Mr. Hayes is a great instructor, always willing to help his students. The lectures are interesting. If you go to class listen closely to the lectures. You will make an "A".
TERRIBLE. Don't take him. Lectures are all over the place. Treated students bad. Can't teach and I really question his knowledge.
Mr. Hayes is a superd teacher. First of all, those who has dropped his class must have been slow. So much extra credit was given that you barely had to try come test time. He gives lectures just like every teacher except he says exactly whats on his mind without sugar coating it. The negative remarks were probally made by weak minded students. A+
Hayes is a great professor! I love history now! He does scare off students in the beginning, but if your not afraid of a challenge you'll find out that the class is not that hard. We only have a mid-term and a final. He gives out a lot of ex. credit. Attendence is your own choice, but it's best to come so you dont miss out on more ex. credit:)
Best teacher ive ever had. Not it is a African American History class,so if your not African American its only natural to feel funny in class. However I would recomend anyone take this class if your looking for something other than boring History.
Mr. Hayes is a fantastic teacher I really enjoyed all of his classes and just talking to him in general a very friendly guy. The only problem is that he has a very different style of grading other than that he's a great teacher.
Best class ever. I agree with the other comment. It is natural to fill funny if you not African American. In time you will feel fine. He is easy on test but make sure you show up sometimes he throws a twist like he did use. Read the book just in case. Fist test is take home:-). But the final is in class(study) Thats the twist.
He is a bit scary at the biegining but its only because hes passionate about history. his lectures seem kinda useless, but his reviews are the exact test. He gives plenty of extra credit. i made 67 on my midterm and ended up with an 88 because the extra credit. ask lots of question and show him you care and in turn he will care.
Funny man! Kept me laughing. Reviews are the exact things that will be on the test. His grading is kind of hard but he gives you a lot of easy extra credit so you really have no reason to not pass. You really don't have to show up! Go for review days and test days and check in the see what extra credit and that's it!!
Mr. Hayes is the Best History teacher I have ever had. He has taught me more about American History and African American History ever. Before this class I hated history. Now I am going back to learn more.
Best teacher ever. This class can be easy if you do what your suppose to do. Alot of people come into this class thinking you dont have to do anything to pass. When grades come there suprised wondering what happend. This is a easy class however the take home test are not as easy as you think, you will spend days looking up information. A+
Everyone that doesn't want to deal with ACC history department rules and guidelines that other professors teach by should take this class. There is no book to read or report to write. He assigns extra credit assignments, and that is it. 2 exams, 2 ridiculously easy test reviews. Easy A.
You won't learn much about history in this class, so if you're major is related to history in any way I would advise you not to take this class. He rambles on about his political views a lot, but if you agree with them it might entertain you. Overall, this was not a very fulfilling class.
The first week he tries to scare you. However after that it is very interesting. Lots of extra credit which will easily bump your grade to an A. Only 2 test and the final was open book/notes. He does go off on personal interest like politics or racial issues. This is an easy A.
I LOVED this class. Take advantage of the extra credit. Wish I could take him again.
I took him for African American Emphasis ,although I am not I must say he is a great teacher. I made an A in his class ,he gets to the point ,talks about great points that need to be talked about and his tests are easy right out of handouts he gives notes u take or movies you watch...Great teacher! And very respected!
He is a very informative professor and very up front with everything. He gets caught up in current events and goes off on tangents all the time but when he actually teaches its very good. Must read the book, his tests are really hard and there are only 2 but lots of extra credit. Challenging but worth it.
This guy likes to Preach alot and well if i wanted to get preached to i would go to CHURCH !!!!!!
Hayes says whats on his mind and has a way of explaining things so one can understand all sides of the topic
Even though his lecture is kind of tough, he gives us extra credit if you want to improve your grade. Like that idea.
The test, only 2 of them are tough, but manageable. He gives you the terms a week before you just have to study them. A lot of extra credit.
Talks about race a lot (says some pretty offensive comments, making students feel uncomfortable). Lectures are usually long (sometimes irrelevant) rants. Doesn't bother using blackboard to post grades, you have to go ask him. If he weren't so bitter, he'd probably be inspiring.
I had him for HIST 1301 and I pretty say its kind of challenging. But, he gives you extra credit if you want to pass this class.
Grade is based on 2 test & a lot of extra credit assignments. The tests are not easy (class average was around 67%), but if you take advantage of all the extra credit you'll pass no problem. Lectures are typically rants that tend to have a lot of emphasis on race, politics, and current events dealing with each.
Easy class. Read the book, only 2 tests (which he gives you the terms for the test a week prior so all you have to do is study them), lectures are great, hes funny at times, and gives out a bunch of extra credit. I'm taking him for 1302!
His lectures are race oriented, but there are only two tests. Both he gives the terms a week before so they are manageable. Gives out a lot of extra credit to earn points. Took him two semesters, A's in both.
I would advise against taking his class. The lectures were more like rants and barely covered the material that the tests covered. He is living in the past and only talks about how today's school system is bad and how minorities( black people) are being oppressed.
Enjoyed taking Professor Hayes class this semester.
Although the lectures can be long and are often not related to the class material (he likes to rant about current political issues) the class was very easy to get an A in. He offers lots of extra credit and as long as you come to class when he discusses the review you will do well on the test which are the only grades. No homework, no quizzes.
Professor Hayes is awesome. Before his class I was oblivious to contemporary race issues, and the connection between history and current events. If you pay attention and make connections his class is very interesting. He explains history like I've never heard it explained it before: he gets down to everyone's ultimate motivations. Knows his stuff.
No homework, only 2 grades for the whole semester (midterm and final)! He does give extra credit sometimes. You dont even need to go to class just show up to get review and then the test. He gets WAAYY off subject. I never read the book and got an A overall. It's his way or the highway when it comes to term definitions for the test. Nice man though
I personally thought he was a great professor. I took him for both Hist 1301 & 1302. He covers material well in relation to chapters of the book. Extra credit is given & there's only two tests(Midterm & final). He also gives a review each time a week before tests with terms. Read and pay attention when he says something will be on the test!
Pros -Two test for the whole semester -Gives out extra credit Cons -Lectures are long and usually off topic -Can be rude at times -Rarely interacts with the class -No class activities and discussions I took Mr. Hayes class in the spring and had an "I" the whole summer. I emailed him and he never responded. He posted my final grade during the fall!
Rarely covered the curriculum, spent a lot of time talking about the election and Trump as well. Routinely told us that we don't know anything, went off on tangents about absolutely nothing. Luckily, he gives the study guide a week before both tests so you have time to study. Would not take another one of his classes.
Prof. Hayes is very intelligent and he has been teaching for decades. Many students lack the ability to cross reference current events to history which makes class difficult. Book is necessary for test definitions. I took both 1302/1302 and received an A in both without difficulty. Pay attention and study exam with book and class will be a breeze
Professor Hayes gives real world lectures that are amazing. If you read the book and grasp it his two tests are fairly simple. He doesn't require attendance but does sporadically give out extra credit so attendance will help if you're bad at matching tests.
Hayes is very different than most history profs. He talks about current issues having to do with government and he is passionate about making students aware of all sides of american history. Mid term and final only, you must look up the terms or remember how he used them in lecture. Plenty of extra credit chances which are added to your exam score.
Hayes is very passionate about what he is teaching. He helped me see history in a new way (I know it sounds cheesy). He's tough, but he really does care about his students, and wants us to succeed. Read and understand what he talks about in class. ASK QUESTIONS!
I took this class and he has 2 grades midterm and final and extra credit. He goes off on tangents and talk a lot about current events which is fine I guess. Gives reviews for test so getting an A is fairly simple. Learned a lot!
His class is a midterm and a final but look on quizlet for the review sheet, have a study group and if you make it through the midterm youll be fine. Hes a funny guy but his lectures are messy. Go to class occasionally, do the extra credit and study a little.. I hate history and I got an A
He is very intelligent and knowledge about his field, but I feel cheated because instead of learning about history, the class was often given informal discussions about current events. He also gave me an incomplete without telling me and I have a voicemail where he gave three different/contradictory excuses as to why. I'm disappointed.
He's lectures have nothing to do with history because of that you do not really have to show up to class. He gives out a lot of extra credit opportunities, take advantage of them. Study the review sheets for the midterm and final, and you pass. The review sheet is the TEST. They are exactly the same. I passed with a 100 and I don't like history.
His class consists of 2 major exams nothing else midterm (ch. 1-8) & Final. So make sure you go to the extra credit events in case you dont do well on the exam. He never lectures about the chapters so its more of a self taught class but its easy once he hands out the review that looks exactly like the test.
Show up to class fairly regularly, take advantage of extra credit opportunities and you'll get an A.
Man what can I say Professor Hayes is hilarious in class he is very knowledgeable in his field midterm and final but if your class get lucky he may just give it to you for take home plenty of extra credit opportunities if you don't wanna take advantage of it don't go whining to him about your grade at the end of the semester peace out lol take him
Great teacher! He talks more about African American history (if you don't want to know anything about it, he may not be the teacher for you. Besides, everyone should know more about AAH like the "other" history being told in your ears.). If you show up and be active in his class, it won't be a problem. I promise.
He offers history from his perspective. Going to class isn't mandatory and the exams are matching so they're are pretty easy. Usually the exam review is the same as the exam. He gives lots of opportunities for extra credit and will sometimes show historical documentaries. Overall an easy grade if you understand the material.
He's the best History prof ever! It was my 3rd time taking HIST 1301 because I dropped it twice but I managed to get 100 on both of his tests and made A in class. Taking him during summer was extremely easy, no paper and only 2 exams. He's funny and smart. He talks about the African Americans and says you are not from the US a lot though.
Hayes gives two tests and an opportunity for extra credit. He does go often into current events, but he is great at relating the past to the current. Hayes wants all his students to think for themselves. He is very knowledgeable and will make you think. Give him a shot! Too bad I won't have him for any more classes.
He is a grat man, he gives an opportunity of extra credits. I love the way how he explains stuff, he has a great knowledge about history, I am really surprised about how students talk about him being tough, he is easy man.
If you want to pass history and understand it at the same time register for his class.
Easy A. Nice teacher. But lets be real this class is a joke. None of the lectures have to do with history its more about how his days going. But the good news is showing up is optional and theres only two test that he gives you the awnser for.
No notes, just lectures. Gets off topic. I thought this professor would be an easy A but that's not true. He gives out the review, but we can't look back to our notes because we don't have any. The test is vague, not enough information. I regret taking him.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. Lectures and tests are vague. Not really care. I regret taking his class. If you are terrible at history or if you want to learn about it, take another professor. A 100-94; B 93-86; C 85-81. He does give extra credit but is not very consistent about it. Waste of time and money
Hayes knows a lot about the subject even tho he sometimes emphasises african american culture which I had no problem at all cause if he doesn't who will? He really gives tons of extra credit randomly so you really shouldn't skip class. I got a 59 on the first test, but with the extra credit and 94 on the second one, I ended up with 109, so easy A.
I took Mr. Hayes in 2012. I was so scared because I wasnt a good student in high school. The entire class failed our test the first time since you only get two, I thought I was doomed. But he offers A LOT of extra credit which I took advantage of. Wrote whatever notes that were relevant to lecture and even asked questions. I ended up with an A.
Mr. Hayes is a great professor, he gives out quizzes randomly that are all a part of Extra credit so make sure you show up to class to take advantage of those extra points given for the exams.
He gets off topic and lectures on his own political agenda, which is centered on racism, and doesn't follow the text book. Oftentimes you find yourself sitting in the same lecture over a two week period because he rambles. I feel as if I have lost money taking this class because I haven't learned anything and he refused to teach anything.
Test is matching, quizzes on movies, lectures a lot about African American History instead of US History book topics, lectures a lot about how he doesn't like current president or that side of politics.
Be prepared to teach yourself and hear a lot about Donald Trump. This professor does not teach at all but he does give out a lot of extra credit, you only have two grades which are your midterm and final that consist of 70 matching questions he never gives out any homework
Professor Hayes is very passionate about African American History; however, hes a terrible teacher. We never talked about actual history in class. Be prepared to teach all the subject matter to yourself. The African American tests are all very easy, but I had a friend in normal US history who said it was impossible due to his lack of teaching.
Every class is essentially just Professor Hayes talking for an hour and twenty minutes saying things like segregation was the greatest period in American History. Hell offer extra credit, but dont do it, he makes it clear that he wont grade the tests and as long as you turn in the take home mid-term and take home final youll receive an A.
He is a great professor, gives a lot of extra credit. Get ready to read!
There are only two grades, the midterm and the final. The lectures have no correlation to the tests but if you skip class you might miss the extra credits he gives out every so often. Right before the exams he lets you ask whatever questions from the study guides he gives out. Easy A but incredibly boring
Mr. Hayes is very passionate about US Hist., however his lectures just consist of him talking/complaining about things that didn't really seem related to what we were suppose to be learning. He expects you to read the chapters on your own, then some how gives out a midterm and final and excepts you to know everything.
Don't take this class if u actually want to learn. Cool and interesting guy but the lectures don't really correlate to what we're supposed to learn and there's only two grades: midterm and final. There is no work for this class really and the syllabus is not helpful. Easy A if you're good at studying for tests. I didn't really learn anything.
If anyone is taking History 1 and 2 for credit, he is best one. Real easy test, not much HW.
Only 2 grades were the mid term and final, which were open note, open internet. They were matching vocabulary. No busy work, no lectures or reading. Best class ever
This was the most useless course I have ever had the misfortune of taking. The "teacher" did not teach us anything and never communicated with any students. The course was 2 tests and a book - it wasn't even possible to get all the questions correct as he messed up creating the test and mis-matched the questions to the answers. Absolutely pathetic.
For the entire semester, there were two assignments total with a clear lack of work, communication, learning, etc. The professor was consistently IMPOSSIBLE to reach via email all semester. Questions? Figure it out on your own because it is like the class is taught without a professor. The grading scale is also weird. Overall, terrible course.
Although I received an A out of his class I truly wanted to learn more about African American History from the teachers perspective. There were no lectures nor was he ever available to chat with students. Midterm and Final exam was open book. I would prefer to do his class in person rather than online.
Although, I wanted to learn more of African American History the class was super easy. He didn't do lectures or assign homework and both exams were open book. I honestly think it was structured this way due to COVID-19 and this being the first time he had to do online classes.
If you want to learn about US African American history, this is not the class for you. Professory Hayes constantly got off subject and rarely covered material in the textbook. He was also never available via email. Not tech-savvy. The final grade was decided by your mid-term and final (which were both open notes). Easy A. Would not recommend. 2/10
he does not give any materials to study with other than the textbook, there are no posted ppt lectures or recorded lectures. doesn't tell you what you need to study for the tests so have fun reading the entire txtbook. lectures are disorganized and its hard to tell what he wants you to know vs. something he's just telling stories about
nice guy but does not know how to use blackboard at all or technology in general so don't expect him to answer in class or email. other than the syllabus there are absolutely no study materials like ppts or recorded lectures posted. his lectures are just him going off on tangents unrelated to the textbook and he wont tell you what you need to study
He expects us to know everything. If we answer any of his questions wrong, he laughs and makes us feel stupid. Would not recommend taking his class at all.
Do not take this class if you want to learn history. Personally, I don't care about history so his class was alright. Only two tests will count towards your grade, midterm and final. Tests are open notes and are just matching 70 vocabs. Don't bother buying the textbook cuz you won't use it. Goes off topic. Easy class but he's just rude.
If your goal is to learn about African American history, this is NOT the class. Professor Hayes is a highly educated teacher; he shares too much of HIStory. If you genuinely desire to learn about African American history, study beyond your college curriculum, and do not limit your wisdom and growth to a 12-week session at Austin Community College.
Prof. Hayes is definitely an acquired taste. Expects students to know a lot about history and will be surprised when you can't answer his questions. If you participate in class lectures can actually be quite fun and you can learn a lot. There is extra credit that counts towards your exams. He is super knowledgeable.
Professor was laid back and very intelligent
This is a very easy laid-back class! I enjoyed taking it!
Worst ever! DO NOT TAKE! Pros: NONE cons: lectures are irrelevant, teaches HIStory, rants about how terrible all white people are due to slavery and about trump, condescending, rude. Old doesn't know anything about technology. grading criteria: A:100-93 B:93-85 C:85-80 D:80-75 F:
This is a very easy class! Great teacher!
He tells useless stories and you do all the work. Lectures were all over the place. It is sad but he has seen better days. He really needs to be supervised because this is not a college class.
Every time I hear this professor I loose brain cells. This professor ramble on about nothing, most of the things he said isn't class related. He is extremely left leaning and let you know his ideal well. The worst part is that he give us term for the test but don't give us definition to study. On the bright side, at least the test is matching.
I honestly could not take how rude and irrelevant this teacher was. He didn't even show up on the first day because he didn't know classes started. He said he treated us rudely because he thought we were high schoolers? He's just too old to be teaching and we got nowhere in the first 2 weeks of classes. He just yaps about how "ignorant" we are.
Mr. Hayes talks a lot about his strong left-leaning views and dislike of Trump, which takes away from the real class material. Grades are based on the midterm and final, it feels like we're not prepared. Some of his racist comments about white people made me uncomfortable. It would be nice if he stuck to talking about history rather than opinions.
Professor Hayes has an acquired teaching style. While lectures can be insightful, he expects extensive prior knowledge. unstuckstudy and the textbook were key for preparing for tests, which were open-note. Overall, a passable class if you're willing to put in the work.
Most boring class ever. He talks nonstop, mostly off topic about politics or being a “dictator.” Gets mad if we talk at all, even for questions. Messed up like 10 midterm questions. Probably was good once, but he's just too old to teach now.
