He tries so hard to make it interesting, good use of multimedia, nice guy. (^_^)
Nice guy
he's very approachable and wants you to learn, dorky, but funny :)
course was easy, he's not quite as approachable as he makes himself out to be
He really tried hard to get us to be interested in the material, good effort!
he's very enthusiastic about teaching
Stull rules, he shows great storm videos, gets really into it. I love STOOORMS!
Great prof. Very helpful! However this class is very hard and the exams can be aweful. Good Luck
Very very very easy class. showed up twice, didn't read the text, only read online notes, and still got 84%. this class is super-slack class. GPA booster!!!
He is soooooooooooooooooooo enthusiastic!!! He puts in a good effort to get the students interested, he loves his storms.
one and only one comment, HIS BOOK SUCKS
Only a couple weeks in, but I'm really enjoying this class. Prof. Stull really seems to enjoy teaching, but makes you work hard for your marks.
Really nice guy who honestly enjoys teaching and is good at it. Great lecture notes, well-laid out presentations. Let's see what happens in the exam!
very nice and passionate about storms. he's enthusiastic and fun. makes a very boring topic quite interesting
ned flanders + storm-chaser - religious zealot = stull...so sincere, I feel compelled to shield him from the mean mean world
Great prof! even acts out the concepts involved. Talks about personal experiences on the subject which makes the lecture alive!! For example, he will jump across the front of lecture room, imitating the motion of a thunderstorm....
The most animated prof I've had! Certainly really "in" to his courses and helping his students understand topics.
Genuinely nice man, good prof, very knowledgeable and interested in his field of teaching and makes a great impression upon students. by the way, Eosc is FULL of HOTTIES!!!
Very "nice." Class is super easy - final exam is completely recycled multiple choice questions from the practise finals on the internet. Too much like a gameshow host/ TV weatherman though. . .could not answer student questions.
He's funny, and he likes to teach. He has good notes and he can translate his experiences to his students very well.
Speaks in clear and understandable language. Considerate of students. He gives easy Q's on hurricanes. Looks like the TV weatherman version of Ned Flanders. Take his class and listen to him joke about himself.
The midterm was actually hard to tell truth... haha! Although awesome ALL MC still so many questions to think about in a short amount of time. BUT Stull is a great teacher although sometimes i feel he just reads off the notes rather than explains own way =)
This is the worst class ever. All you do is memorize hundreds of pages of notes so if that's your style take this course. The avg on the first midterm was 58%. Not an easy class and extremely boring. Stull is a good teacher though.
class is incredibly boring and i agree, it's all about memorizing hundreds of pages of notes, but Stull made his sections a lil more interesting cuz he actually seemed to wnat to TEACH ppl..but the way he talks kinda reminded me of Ned Flanders and kinda like as if he was talking to lil kids =/
Extremely hard this year. certainly discouraged people who are actually interested in taking geography /EOSC as electives NOr Major. Stull is a good prof tho.
Guy had 3 times as many notes as the other profs but his Q's were easy.
65% avg for a class of 350, lots of memorization
Just wants students to be walking thunderstorm encyclopedias. His note package was 4 times larger than any other profs. AVOID EOSC114 if you are an arts student. Ruined my average
he's a really nice prof, very helpful.. he wears really colorful sweaters... EHEHHEH
This was an awesome class! Ok, so there was a lot of memorizing and the exams were overly long...but it was so interesting and Prof Stull made it even better! He made the material easy to learn and was funny (or tried to be). He's a nice guy.
I don't think I have ever had to memorize so much in my life! He is a nice guy (even though he did kick me out once for wispering to my friend in a class of 300). I would say that the exams are detailed and hard, but the prof himself is nice. Still wouldn't take it again. Wasn't my cup of tea.
Great class, his component was easily the best. A lot of notes, but so what. Stull made it remarkably clear and interesting, and pretty easy course (even if you're in Arts like I am).
He was an okay prof. Boring for the most part, but this class was a nightmare. If you think it's going to be an easy credit, think again because it was my lowest mark by FAR.
Yeah the class was a lot harder than I thought it would be, but Stull was really good. He always had enthusiasium and very clear notes. Definatly a good guy.
Great Teacher. His classes have lots of work, but he is enthusiastic and interesting. Very reasonable with marking.
really enthusiastic prof. which made the lectures more alive. i found eosc 114 okay as long as you look over the textbook and notes.
I can't say enough good things about Prof. Stull. He's one of the most enthusiastic teachers I've ever had. There's a lot of work in this course but he's managed to break it down into bearable chunks. His lectures and homework assignments take varied formats and keeps it interesting. Video Friday's rock! I'll be sad to finish this course
He is a great prof. His notes are very clean and his exam is not hard.
His voice can bore you after a while.
Easily the best prof i could ever have. All classes were lively & contained so much interesting multimedia. Even though it was my last class every day, it did not make me fall asleep a bit. Don't complain about any material being hard coz he's already taken all calculus outta there. TAs who marked assignments were fast and gave helpful comments.
One of the very few good and understanding professors that I've had in my two years of study. All classes were lively & his explanations for the course concepts were truly easy to understand. I highly recommend him!
This prof is awesome. The course was easy, although it did require some keeping up with homework. But his midterm AND final were both open book, and if you did your hw, you'd have no problems whatsoever. On top of that, he's actually a clear, enthusiastic prof who makes class very fun for all his students. Highly recommend taking him~!
totally awesome prof... great course for science creds all u arts students... really has passion for what he's doing... AMAZING PROF!!!
VERY enthusiastic, like a game show host. His lecture sections were the hardest but he had the most notes for explanation. Tricky exams. Don't bother memorizing/studying in detail the formulas of the storm section. Given to you on the exam and there are next to no questions about them.
Crystal clear in lectures, very enthusiastic too. I don't know if he makes the test though, because it is really hard and tricky, he ended up scaling the midterm up by 8%.
he was an awesome prof. very energetic and absolutely loves what he does and wants you to love it too. a lot of homework but if you do the homework you'll ace the midterm/exam (which are open book).
Great enthusiasm and get to watch cool videos. A lot of hw/assignments and a few at-hom labs (the labs are killer long). If ur willing to spend time working on the hw, the course would be super easy (you have to be interested in meteorology thou, else it gets boring.. fast). Tests are very simple (and open book) and he still ends up scaling up.
Don't go into this class expecting a GPA booster...wasnt!! Like someone else said, prof is really interesting like a game show host, but exams are random, dont know where they come from and not clear on what we need to know...interesting material but NOT a GPA booster
FANTASTIC! He's a professor who is passionate about what he does and this translates into fun lectures that engage students. I'm an arts student who managed an A in this course; do your readings, the online quizzes, and you're fine. Must attend lectures, uses iClickers every class (only counts for about 4% of the grade though. Slides posted online.
He's a really nice person, but has high expectation for homework assignments (lots of math, you'll also need to explain your answers) and reading (2 text, you're expected to pretty much read everything). It's a good thing his lectures are quite enjoyable and midterms/finals open book (and super easy compared to assignments).
He gives a lot of homework. I'm on a varsity team and frankly I don't have time to get it done. His textbook that he writes himself is written in a confusing style. He expects students to complete assignments in Excel or Matlab, etc. which is extremely frustrating for those who have limited experience with these programs.
THIS COURSE IS NOT A GPA BOOSTER. Atleast not while he's teaching it I spent so much time on homework it significantly distracted from other courses. He teaches a very reading intensive course from a textbook he wrote himself riddled with errors. Nice guy but does not know how to structure a course.
this is NOT a GPA boostter, however, i must say Dr. Stull does a pretty good job of teaching. Hes nice, helpful, passionate and his classes are pretty interesting. Exams are a little tricky sometimes and i find very detailed.
he seems to have a lot of experience teaching/lecturing. his manner of speech is more engaging than many other teachers and is very pleasant
Natural Disasters is not a GPA booster. I took this class expecting it to be very easy. I was not pleasantly surprised. However tricky the class may have been, the profs were all really good, and if you have a scientific interest in natural disasters then definitely take it. If you are looking for an easy science credit though, do not take this
This class is not as easy as everyone says it is. There is ALOT of reading!
EOSC 114 is NOT A GPA BOOSTER, especially if you need a science course. I do really well in all my classes and this was the lowest mark I ever got considering the fact that I studied a lot for it more than any other courses. However, the profs are really nice and helpful. If you like the topic, go for it!
Okay.. i don't know what everyone else is talking about.. but if you took geo 12 and get less than 90%.. its embarassing. Teh exams are 26 mc questions, then you do the same test again in a group... questions are STRAIGHT from the slides, which he puts online also. Only reason to attend class is to get clicker participation marks
I am very, very glad to have Roland Stull for ATSC 201. The professor designed this course in a way that it is basically impossible for any students to fail. The workload for this course is well-balanced. The assignments and on-line warm-up questions are fair; the exams are very favorable. Roland Stull is truly a great prof. Highly recommended.
this man is a winner. you will understand. he wants the whole class to do well. i didn't really do the readings, just skimmed through the text for the online assignments, although *some* of the questions on the exam were from the text. no notes required, just take your i-clicker. although i got Bs on two of the midterms, still ended up with an A+.
This guy is the best lecturer in EOSC114! His voice really would attracts you to listen to his lectures! His exams are fair, all are mentioned in his notes. And he does use videos to explain things more clearly! Great prof, learned a lot from him. Others? Well, there are 2 other great prof in EOSC114. Rest profs, nah.
Interesting professor. He likes to make the class a little more comfortable with his EOSC jokes.
if you think this is going to be an easy course you're wrong. the amount of homework and reading you have to do is unacceptable. I had more homework and reading than all of my other 4 courses combined. You have a 700 page textbook, you're expected to read every page, have fun.
Stull is one of those rare, awesome professors. Very helpful and understanding, and he REALLY cares about teaching students + making sure they learn (instead of just rushing through the material). One of the best courses I've ever taken - but be warned, it's not an "easy" class. Work regularly/consistently, and the workload is totally manageable.
Excellent prof! Explains concepts clearly and concisely, and entertaining to listen to.
Assignments take sooo long its unacceptable. Other than that the course is straight forward. I got an A and I put this course on the back burner all semester. Even blew off and assignment or two. Use google for the warm up assignments because Roland also assigns too much reading.
Prof. Stull really cares about his students, and he wants them all to learn. That's why this course is structured in a way that he efficiently uses his class time to clarify points that students didn't get from the pre-class quiz. Organize your time so you can do the homework, go to class, and enjoy the course.
Roland is the best, but BE WARNED: The assignments take forever. If you give this class a lot of work, then you will do well. (Not a class to take purely for credit. If you are not interested in the subject, then this class is not right for you.) Otherwise, lectures are fun and it is really impressive how much we learn over this course.
SUCH an easy course. Open book exams mean that you don't have to memorize a thing. Assignments take many hours, but if you just put in the time you will get good grades on them and they're not worth much. He has structured this course so that it will have an A average. Great grade booster for anyone (not just those who are interested in ATSC)
HES SO CUTE
I took this course to fulfill science credits and was expecting to hate it. However, Roland and the other profs made it fun. There are three midterms and a final. All have a group component, which can really raise your grade. Roland's unit was the hardest, and his slideshows don't contain much information, so take good notes!
roland is so knowledgeable about meteorology and is a super effective instructor! the pre-readings & homework for this course took up so much time, but if you put in the time, you will get an A in this class. midterm and final are open book, but this course covers a lot of content. really interesting and applicable course! textbook is free online
Funny guy with great anecdotes. The tests were very straightforward (basically from the notes)
class is all based off a textbook which you have to print yourself and it is super long and dense to read. Flipping through it was a pain. Exams are all open book but if you dont have patience for this class to do excel assignments and pre reading 2 times a week dont take this class. It is easy to get a decent grade but gotta do all the hw
Great course and I loved how organized it was for an online course. Definitely considering taking another ATSC course!
His voice makes you listen and participate in class. The unit seems very hard but he made a great effort to make it easy for a 100 level course. Would definitely want to have him as a prof again!
Amazing engaging prof! Clearly loves what he talks about which is inspiring. The course however is tough there is a lot lot of homework. Its not a hard course, just lots of work to do all the time and a lot of information.
Roland truly wants the best for his students. The prof is amazing but the course itself is challenging. There are extensive Excel homework assignments due every week, alongside 20-30 pages of readings. He doesn't post his Powerpoint slides or the answer keys to practice exams, making it difficult to prepare for the midterm and final.
Roland is an amazing lecturer!! His slides are clear and the material isn't too hard. The clicker questions are actually really helpful. He very passionate about what he's teaching and he's really nice!!
Roland is a gem and he clearly loves what he does. I took Eosc114 for a science credit and we had different professors for each week but overall he was the best and most clear in his expectations. His lectures are engaging and I wish UBC had more profs like him that actually make students want to learn. Absolute gem!
Roland is truly a real gem. He's enthusiastic, nice and funny, shares amusing personal anecdotes , and is very knowledgable. He is clear in lectures and is very organized when he plays videos and shows slides.
Hes the worst prof ever. Really really sweet guy but the content is SO heavy that i wish i never took this class. He gives me more homeworks than ALL my classes combined. I would drop it rn if if i did not get W on my transcript.
He is such a genuinely happy guy. He looks excited at the beginning of lectures and you can see he wants us to be excited too. He tries his best to make the content as interesting as possible. Its nice seeing someone who loves what they do. He also makes his slides clear and is open to any questions! In a class of 200 he makes it feel personal.
Really helpful guy. 10/10 would recommend him. He is genuinely such a nice prof and tries his best to help you out in your situation. I had a big problem for my midterm of Atsc 201 and he helped me out when I was feeling really low. To be honest, I wasnt expecting him to be able to help me out in my situation but he really did! I loved his class.
Roland is a terrible professor. He is applying a flipped class model that just doesn't work for the content. He flips through 5 diagrams in 35 seconds, asks confusing and illogical clicker questions. The content would be interesting if he wasn't such a bad professor.
Stull is absolutely brilliant. You have to read the book to really understand the course, but it's such a fantastic resource that I can't even complain about that. You can tell he really loves what he does, and he's incredibly knowledgeable.
I am only taking the online course that is made by this prof, but his passion and knowledge just leaks through the screen. So much information, so well organized, with so many extra little tidbits you can look for. With him doing his utmost to make everything interesting.
Stull is unreal. Best prof I've had at UBC. He's a funny dude, cares a lot and obviously has so much knowledge in the area. Homework assignments take quite a while each week and there's prereading twice a week but neither are too difficult. Don't take if you're not interested in meteorology/eosc but if you are it's the best course you'll take here
He's an absolute sweetheart and he's clearly passionate. He does his best to engage the class with anecdotes and real life examples. The videos he chooses for class work well and his slides are easy to follow. He's a swell guy and I enjoyed his module the most out of all the EOSC114 lecturers.
Fun and enjoyable class. Just remember to re-read material and make clear and concise notes.
he had the best module in eosc 114, and is a gem. probably one of the best professors at UBC.
Easy to do well with minimal studying (3 days) to get 95%+ As for content wise, the course content is quite well structured. This is definitely a course to take if you are interested in weather pattern.
Dr. Stull as a person and a professor was fine, but if you are an ENSC ecology major, pick GEOB 200 instead as it is easier. Hw & readings took hours to do each week and there are tons of physics and maths equations you have to self-teach. If you want to learn the physics behind weather this course is for you; if not, take GEOB 200/ATSC 113.
Inspired me to consider doing a minor in atmospheric sciences. Stull's teaching style (flipped lecture) ensures that you are prepared for all exams and classes are for demonstrating that knowledge using clicker questions. Excel spreadsheets help you practice for the numerical side of the midterm/final. The most impactful course I took this year!
He's a great guy and he really cares about the class. However, it was unnecessarily hard, which was unfortunate. Lot of reading and long homework assignments every week. It was interesting and he was great, and the grades somehow work out even though it seemed like they wouldn't during the semester.
Dr. Stull was by far the best professor I had out of the 6 that taught this EOSC course! He made his module the most interesting compared to the others. Incredibly sweet man.
One of the best EOSC profs! Funny and sweet guy. He really knows what he is talking about!
Great, funny and interesting lectures. However, goes through slides extremely quickly so I would recommend having to read ahead of class and after.
ROLAND IS THE BEST. He loves clouds so much it's adorable. He showed us so many videos of clouds. He's very funny and has good slides.
Out of the several profs in this class, this guy was solidly on the tolerable side. Goes through slides way too quickly and shows way too many videos of clouds, but has some awesome stories and a lot of enthusiasm. A note for the class itself - just make flashcards and memorize the slides. There's no textbook.
best prof, gave us goated grades w mean of 81 even tho class did sus on assessments. kinda have to work for it tho as theres a good amount of weekly hw including reading n excel stuff. nonetheless a solid prof that made this a solid course
Hes a great guy and he was fun to listen to, but the lecture content was mainly YouTube videos and what was necessary for tests wasnt super clear. Tests and assignments were really difficult.
Very enthusiastic which made lectures very enjoyable
He makes me excited about storms somehow. Shows lots of videos (like 1/3 of class time) during lecture for visuals explaining things (videos are examinable material) Slides move pretty fast during lecture though (slides available on canvas)
Roland Stull makes his lectures super engaging by showing tons of videos and cracking jokes. The storms unit he taught was definitely one of the easier units on the midterm and final. The best prof out of the entire eosc 114 teaching team :)
Great Prof. Really cares about his students and the material he's teaching. The course is a lot of work (pre-readings for each class, and weekly homework) however the work isn't difficult, just time consuming. As long as you put in some effort you'll be rewarded. Definitely recommend prof Stull!!
Really passionate
Professor Stull is great! Interesting course, fun and engaging lectures.
Do I actually remember anything I learned in ATSC201? No. Would I recommend him? Yes. Lots and lots of textbook readings, which I never did but as long as you understand/have notes on all the learning goals, you'll be fine. He really loves what he teaches so he's very happy in lecture and supportive of students and questions.
Roland Stull is one of the only professors that teaches ATSC courses at UBC. I think that UBC is very lucky to have him- the textbook is written by him and I found it fairly easy to understand. There is quite a lot of reading in ATSC201 but anything you are confused about he discusses in class. The lectures are great, and he loves teaching.
This prof teaches out of his own textbook (very content dense) and because there's so many rinse & repeat topics, he does not explain concepts well in class. You have to know Excel well to complete the long, weekly homework. Great personality otherwise, but avoid this class if you can.
really passionate prof and easy to understand lectures
This course is interesting but inexplicably dense, with so many topics rushed in four months. With that being said, Prof.Stull is a really funny lecturer and a warm person in general who's well approchable. Be ready to devote 4-6 hours a week for homework, open-book exams (with Google), and a huge 5% extra grade bonus for iclicker correctness.
