Ramirez for President! He's so funny and keeps your interest while not sidetracking away from the material too much. His random slides are really entertaining and I never want to skip class. He's definitely very helpful too. I wish I could take him again for A&P 2, but my schedule does not allow it!
He was alright, I didn't like how he would say how easy the test is and then give us an impossibly hard test. His notes were scattered too.
I loved Dr. J. You have to work hard, thats just the nature of the material, but he will bend over backwards to help you out. And, he is hilarious!
heck of a nice guy, i really like him as a person, hes funny in class, but tends to get off subject easily, notes are extremely scattered at times, test are fair but he has trouble wording his questions at times
Dr.Ramirez is a really nice guy! He is ALWAYS very upbeat and keeps it lively. The problem lies with the fact he dumbs down the material to explain it during lecture and then slams you with a test that is NOTHING like how he explained it, ugh...
Honestly, Dr. J was a funny guy and made class upbeat even early in the morning however, the notes he gave are okay but kind of vague and even though i would read every page of every chapter his tests seem impossible. He would act like they would be easy and give easy notes then slam you with the test. I would go Hines if you want an A.
Do not take him if you can get into Susan Hines class. he thinks he is a stand up comic and acts like every test will be easy if you just read his notes...test were impossible if you don't read the book and learn it yourself.stay away !!!
Geez people, this is A&P, you can't expect Dr J to hold your hand. Dr. J keeps lectures entertaining, and explains it in such away to get you to understand... ALTHOUGH you still have to take the time and UNDERSTAND the material on your own. DON'T TRY TO MEMORIZE THE MATERIAL, KNOW THE PHYSIOLOGY!
I like Dr. J as a person, but if you like a typical lecture where he stands and lectures, this is NOT for you. He's all over the room and does crack a lot of jokes and he can be scatter brained but he's still a good prof.
Loved him!!!!!!:)))))
Dr j honestly one of the best prof ive ever had...even though he isnt to talented when it comes to spelling. A hilarios man in all senses of the word
Dr. J is a super nice guy who sincerely wants you to do well in his class. He has a very laid back personality but don't be fooled, his exams are difficult. You cannot memorize the material you must understand the ins and outs!!
Dr. J is quite a professor. I agree, he's all over the room and cracks a lot of jokes. His lecture is entertaining but his notes are HORRIBLE! They are very vague. He also lies to you. He says to understand the main concepts however, he throws the most tiniest details in the test that don't even matter! Overall, alright teacher, difficult tests!
I enjoyed having Dr. J as a professor. He makes lectures interesting, and he is always bouncing around the room cracking jokes. But his tests are very difficult. You really need to take the time to understand the material. Notes were kind of vague also. But if you put forth the effort, you'll learn a lot.
He is one of the best professors you will ever have. Dr J is very energetic and you can tell that he loves what he does. He is very easy to get along with and will help with everything you need. His tests are relatively difficult but if you REALLY understand the material (not just lie to yourself that you do) then you will do fine.
Funny funny teacher. he really is a down to earth kinda teacher. However don't let that distract you though. His teaching maybe funny but the material is tough.
Funny. Connects with the class really well, something no A&P teacher can do with such a large class. this is probably the hardest class I have ever taken. Pay attention, use the book, go to the study groups. the tests are hard! don't let his humor fool you. He does care and wants people to succeed.
Renal Physiology with Dr. J... WOW. Teaches with powerpoints taken directly from the book. He is a GREAT guy, but dont let his sense of humor fool you! Exams are INSANE! When you think you have studied enough for an exam, you better seriously study an extra 5 more hours! If you dont understand something ASK! He does curve. Only reason I got an A.
Anatomy and Physiology in 5 weeks during the summer. He was very fair and understanding of our lack of time. Willing to meet outside of class the day before a test. You can't pass just by memorizing, you really need to understand the concepts and material. Studying 2 hours/day + is necessary! Lecture is physiology-based and lab is anatomy-based.
Dr. J is an amazing teacher. I took both ANP 1 and 2 with him. Yes the material is hard but like he tells his students you really cant make anp easy...it is what it is. I learned so much from him. With some hard work I was able to get a good grade in his class. You do need to understand the material and how each concept works.
Funny professor but has trouble staying on topic
. His notes can be a bit confusing at times but that is why you should always check back to the book and have him clarify. His tests are fair game. Hard but prin of chem(IMO) was much harder. Be sure to study and attend class and your grade should be fine. He is very easy going so don't be afraid to ask questions!! Sad he isn't teaching a&P II.
If you are looking for an entertainer (not a lecturer), this your class. Notes were unclear, and very unorganized. Its best just to read the textbook and to pay attention in lecture for exam hints. Study the book often since exams are fair game; he uses the same exams each year-does not reflect material covered in class!
Great teacher. Keeps things interesting. Tests are hard, but I aced all of them because I always showed up to class, and I take my own notes outside of class.
Going to class should be mandatory, becaus if you dont your def wont do well. Missed one class and was lost for maybe 3 days. Test arent easy, but you can def get and A. Try to get and A because if you do then you wont have to take the final. There arent that many people who dont take the final because the class is very difficult.
Really nice guy, has a passion for anatomy, and Is very helpful. More exciting then most anatomy teachers at Akron. His tests are very hard! If you know all of the concepts and understand how to use them then you will be fine. Everything on his tests he covers in class, it helps to record the lectures.
Very nice guy and will keep your attention! However, the class is DIFFICULT! His notes are vague which means you will need to read the book and pay close attention. The tests aren't bad as long as you study. He's passionate about teaching and very helpful! Good guy, great class! Read, study hard, listen, and you'll do fine!
Dr. J has a great sense of humor He is willing to help his students if they ask. It is obvious that he loves to teach and he really wants his students to do well. Study his notes pay attention in class and you will do fine. I recommend taking his class.
I found this class to be very difficult. The whole semester we were behind schedule so the day of the final we had to take a regular test and a cumulative final. The only grades are tests so there is a lot of pressure on your performance. Ramirez's tests consist of mostly physiology not anatomy questions.
Absolutely love Dr. J. His power points will make you cross-eyed, his lectures can be hard to follow, and he goes off on tangents. But his laugh is bubbly, warm and contagious. One of the best in UA bio department. Class is boring, but he is a good guy. Very helpful, just visit his office and there is nothing a little hug from Dr. J can't fix!
Dr. J is one of the best Professors I have ever had. My husband and I were bummed when the class ended because we don't have anything else that we can take with him. The way he teaches is the same way he writes his exams. They are not easy, but he will bend over backwards to help you in any way he can. If you need to take A&P, take it with him!
Dr. J is super funny and really knows his material. He gets of topic really easily and says crazy things sometimes. Trying to write all of the information on his slides plus take down any extra notes is impossible, so pre-print the slides and add extra in class. Only thing I didn't like is that Test 4 is on the same day as the final, blah.
If you have taken Prin. bio you can ace this class, it is basically review. Just pay attention. Don't read from the book.
Even though he know the material it can be hard to understand him since he gets distracted every 5-10 minutes. If you have ever had Dr. Cooper he is the complete opposite as far as knowing what to expect for lectures and tests. He does make him self available for office hours. Unless you can self teach definitely go to class.
He will go to many lengths to help you. If you are struggling he will help you. He will will do as much as he can to help you pass. Easy to pay attention to. Makes his lectures interesting and funny. Really good professor.
Dr. J is a really cool guy, and his lectures are a lot of fun. However, he does not go into extreme depth with material. If you are looking for an A, he is probably your best option. If you want to learn the material to become a nurse, doctor, etc. I would recommend Dr. Carlson. Her tests are a bit harder, but you learn a lot more.
Dr. J was one of the best teachers I have ever had. The material is tough but he will stay with you as long as you need until you fully understand the material. He is a wonderful guy and so funny. I laughed everyday I went to class. He made learning fun. He doesnt respond to emails usually so go and see him or call his office.
Physiology of Reproduction was the best class I will ever take. Dr J is a great teacher: he's hilarious, and as long as you read through the material and know the physiology, you'll get A's on the tests. He's big on knowing the concepts rather than the specifics. No textbook.
Dr J is so great! He's funny, he cares and wants you to pass his class. His exams are not easy but if you go to lecture and take good notes you'll get an A for sure.
He was insanely entertaining, especially for teaching such heavy material .
Dr. J was amazing! I looked forward to coming to class, he has a good sense of humor making it easy to stay engaged. He wants the best for you so be sure to go to him if you need clarifcation. He doesnt read the book so I didnt either after the first test but used outside resources like youtube etc for help with broader concepts. Great guy!
By far the best professor I've had! He will do absolutely everything he can to help you understand the material and really wants you to succeed. I made my own outlines out of his notes and memorized them and ended up with a 99% A in the class! I was heartbroken that he wasn't teaching A&P2 the next semester but he definitely prepared me well!
Like many professors, he will meet you half way. The difference is his lectures are entertaining and engaging, a rare sight on a college campus. The grade you earn is up to you. If you want to do well and learn a lot along the way, this is the class for you.
Dr. J was one of the BEST professors I've ever had. He tests towards what he lectures. He is very energetic, I smell Chick-fil-A!?... But he gets distracted a lot. He is will to help outside of class, I saw him in the parking lot and he asked if I had any questions. Do not fail a test, you only have four. Anatomy IS HARD! There are no surprises.
Dr. J breaks down the material in a way other professors don't. He focuses heavily on understanding the concepts and bigger pictures rather than the tiny stuff that doesn't matter as much. If you don't go to his lectures, there's no way to catch up on material. Don't buy the book, his lectures are all that matter
Dr. J was amazing and so funny. He made Anatomy fun! I loved his class and would take it again!
One of my favorite professors. He is hilarious, passionate about teaching and a caring individual. He ends every class with I love you guys. As he says, anatomy is hard. He is not lying. But if you study for the exams, pay attention in class, and go to him with questions you'll be fine. Don't bother buying the book though. Just a whiley plus code.
Had him for A&P 1+2, He is an awesome professor if you do not enjoy being off topic at all during class then he is not for you. But he is fun, funny, and goes over material more than once. There is 5 tests, you take 4 and 5 the day of your final making both shorter. Gives optional final if you have an A. Also drops your lowest test grade.
Ramirez is like A1 steaksauce
He tells you the minute you walk into this class that it will be hard and there is no doubt about that. But, his lectures are funny and informative. I really enjoyed being in his anatomy 1 & 2 classes. Most importantly, he cares about all of his students and wants everyone to do well. For these reasons, I would absolutely recommend.
You need to go to lecture. Everything on his test is covered in the lecture. He gets distracted easily which makes things difficult but will re go over a topic to solidify it. I recommend recording the lectures, going back, listening to them, and then taking notes. Not always the most timely on grading or getting back to you but I still recommend.
I had Dr. J for A&P I and II, and is one of the best professors Ive ever had! He makes the material very digestible for students, and is willing to help outside of class if youre willing to put in the effort. He truly cares about all of his students, and he wants you to succeed.
I had Dr J for anatomy 2 and regula for 1. While I got an A in both, Dr Js was much easier. Go to class and he will tell you what is on the exam. You only need the book for the Wiley plus code that gives 3% extra credit on each exam. Only tricky thing is the final (test 5) is given on the same day as test 4. Test 5 looked like old exam questions.
Very understanding and willing to help out. Make sure you go to class he gives out pointers for the test.
I had Dr J for AnP 1 and 2 and I personally thought he was a very good teacher. Beware he does get distracted very easily so he definitely covers less material than the other professors but he usually won't test you on material he didn't cover. His tests are kind of difficult you have to reason your way through questions a lot.
Dr. J was a really fun professor, but the material is extremely hard. You won't do well if you don't comprehend every detail about each topic. Make sure you are asking questions in class! He is totally willing to break down any topic you need.
A&P is a TOUGH class, but Dr.J is a good professor. He makes his lectures funny and engaging. The tests can be really tricky and sometimes confusing, so my best advice is dont rely on his PowerPoints alone. READ YOUR BOOK!! Also do the extra credit! Its a total grade saver! Put in the work, and youll survive. I promise.
Dr. J is a great guy. He knows anatomy is hard, and it is but he makes learning fun. He is so funny and his lectures are always a good time. Tests are on exactly what is lectured, no need for the book.
I took Dr. J's class because it was the only upper level biology that had the chance of being completely online. I have never taken an anatomy or physiology class, but I considered it worth the risk. His lectures are incredible!! He pauses extremely dense lectures a couple times to allow you to absorb material and explains dense jargon into layman
Dr. Ramirez is the best Professor I had. He takes difficult concepts and making them accessible and easy to learn. I just showed up to class and that was enough to learn enough to get an A because he goes over the material over and over so you really understand. Also hes just generally funny and fun! I ended up taking 4 classes with him!
Dr. J really loves his students. Even in a class of 100+ you could tell he wanted each student to succeed. We didnt have any homework from the lecture section which was nice, as long as you did your due diligence in studying for the exams. His teaching style was kind of all over the place, but he usually emphasized what would be on the exams.
After meeting this man my life has changed. He really is the A1 steak sauce of Akron University. Takes things that look like booty, and makes them so much more enjoyable.
Dr J is an awesome professor. He turned a subject that was super boring into something that students will laugh about instead. I recommend taking anp 1 with him. He does not curve nor does he drop exams, but he wants the best for his students. He focuses on concepts and not memorization. Read your textbook it will help make the concepts make sense.
He jokes A LOT. And although I found him to be funny, with a class this hard you really will need someone to be more serious so you can learn. He's really nice though. He gave us amnesty for all quizzes that we may have missed. I think the class itself will make you dislike Dr. J because it's so much material at once. Dr. J does his best though
He is a fun professor but I feel the material is tough and you will need someone serious to understand. I wish hed give us study guides as to what to study for the exam. Its really hard figuring out what to study when you have a 125 PowerPoint presentation in front of you. Aside that he is a loving person.
Gets sidetracked quite often. This makes it difficult to follow along and understand the concepts. I wish he would have given a study guide that clearly shows what ideas we should have a good understanding of for the test. Instead, he lectures on PowerPoint with 120+ slides. He tried to make the class enjoyable, but it was more difficult.
My experience with him was extremely poor. I do not know if it is because of the snow days or what but the amount of material that was covered in each test was absurd. It was anatomy so obviously it is a lot of material but he made the tests uneven and gave tests two and three over and exorbitant amount of material that throws off how to study.
Super caring and funny professor, made one of the worst classes to take enjoyable and fun.
Controversial but I like Dr. J! If you want an easy A, take another prof. But if you're taking A&P you're probably going into a tough major and tougher classes to follow, so his teaching style will prepare you for those. No study guides, tests are over 250+ slides. GO TO CLASS. Don't cram for exams. Funny guy. You can tell he really cares.
Dr. J breaks down the topics of ANP really well. I studied for multiple hours every day while taking this class. If you do not study, you will NOT pass. Just attending lecture is not enough. While he does an excellent job of explaining and going over the topics of anatomy, studying is crucial. He is one of the best professors UA has!
He genuinely cares about his students, and you can tell. After every lecture he would say "Bye love you guys!" You should definitely go to lecture; he has a habit of repeating important topics and letting the class know what will be on the exams that you wouldn't know if you didn't go to class. Also GO TO LA HOURS!! They were honestly so helpful!
He gets distracted a lot and jokes throughout the whole class. He is not the worst teacher, he explains things if you need him to but I feel like the class was extremely hard because of how much material was covered every time. 100+ slides for one chapter is too much. Exams are 85% of your grade and quizzes are 15%. No study guides.
You have to go to class for any of his lectures. Easy if you study and attend class.... Extremely difficult if you dont go to class.
Great prof. Cares a lot about his students. Will do anything to help outside of class. Love him
Dr J is a super nice person! I did appreciate that he approached his lectures with humor. Although, the lectures were so boring. The test reviews were not helpful at all (and I showed up to EVERY class). I had no idea what to expect on his tests!! He is a very lenient grader. He also has extra credit on every test. But the tests are the only grade
I really enjoyed Dr. J. One thing I realized early on is you have to spend a lot of time studying the concepts he covers in lecture. He will try to emphasize matters that are important regarding the test, and you will definitely need to take good notes. You don't necessarily need the textbook but I used it as a guide to really understand concepts.
While it is true that Dr. J gets off task a lot, he really does care about his students and easing the stress that comes along with this kind of class. The tests are overwhelming , studying and reading are a must.
He rambles the whole lecture. The PowerPoints are 1,000 slides long. Homework barely count towards the grade and that is 500 questions. Hard to study when there is a trillion concepts.
Dr. J is an incredible educator. He is accessible during office hours, gives clear expectations for his course, and makes lectures worth attending. Be prepared to attend ALL lectures and make an effort to use the Learning Assistants. Warning: He may reference Edwin Starr and you may get it stuck in your head.
As much as Dr. J gets off topic, he always pulls it back, and doesn't expect us to know things that weren't covered. If you just put in some effort you will easily pass the class. He's willing to help you succeed if you just put in the effort to learn. Anatomy is really difficult, but he knows what he is doing.
he's the best
No. Don't.
Best teacher I had here at Akron, he does have cons such as getting off track, losing you in lectures, and maybe coming off imitating. but if you just take the time to talk to him, you'll see that he wants you to succeed so before you knock him talk to him and he will help. p.s get lost in his course, read the book, do work, and ask questions
I graduated from Akron last year and I am currently in med school. I am writing this now to tell you if you want to go to med school and have an advantage in cardio physiology and renal physiology TAKE HIS CLASSES!!!! They do not go as in depth as med school, but these two classes have helped me tremendously with foundations in these topics!
I cannot say enough great things about Dr. Ramirez. I took him for A and P 1 & 2, Renal Phys, and Advanced Cardiovascular Phys and I'm genuinely sad that I'll never take another class with him. He will constantly repeat important concepts that you'll be tested on and his lectures are engaging. Pay attention and you should do just fine.
He is a super funny and caring guy. Makes lots of jokes during lectures (which isn't always helpful because he gets side tracked very easily). The lectures cover insane amounts of slides. He claims the exams are just "concepts", but with 100s of concepts in the slideshows it is impossible to know what to study. TA/LA hours definitely help a little.
Had him for A&P 1 and 2, highly recommend. He covers a lot of information in his lectures and it can be difficult to know exactly what to study for which is what the TA's are for. If you want a good grade go to one of the TA's office hours, they're the main reasons why I got A's. The lab for this class is terrible though, straight memorization.
So kind and caring. If you're confused or not doing well just talk to him. He is such a nice guy and will try to help in any way possible. Also funny and almost always has bonus questions on exams.
Easily the best case scenario for taking anatomy I and II. Dr. J cares deeply about his students and understands how hard the course is. I felt as if he was very fair without ruining the potential gain of students. Expect a lot of lecture notes and some very long homework, but those help out a lot. Would definitely take more classes with him!
very hard class
Dr. J was funny. Sometimes he gets off track, but if you say something to him he gets back on. Gave some homework for every unit, it was just tedious. The exams can feel overwhelming, but give yourself a few days to study for an hour or two per session and you do great. Don't skip lecture. He skips over material and covers what is actually needed.
Good prof. Had him for A&P 1and 2. Easy to reach outside class. He really tries to cooperate with his students if there are issues.
