VERY HARD!!!!!!!!! he doesn't care that he is hard, either
basically sucks
Hard, but fair when he grades
Guaranteed to fail every test
Didn't learn a thing. Don't listen to him-- just read the book.
He tries very hard to help. Easy grading 80% = 4.0
Understand the mechanisms for the tests. Difficult
The worst class ever! Very, very hard!! Drop this class if you have him. You will fail every test and get a heart attack in the process. But he does have a huge curve at the end.
you may pass just barely b/c of the huge curve, but you learn absolutely nothing
He really knows how to teach but his exams are really hard!!!!!!!
Instead of complaining use his knowledge !!!
Very hard, exams make you feel like you have not learned anything. Grades on a big curve and give partial credit. You do learn if you try but feel like you haven't after taking his exams.
horrible - take anyone other than him - you will fail. period.
AVOID! Lectures are not helpful and tests are almost impossible.
If you enjoy an educational challenge he's the professor to take. You'll learn a lot if you try hard, but don't take a lighter load when you take this. You'll need the extra study time.
This man will rock your a**. Be ready to put in 12 hours a week. The key to a good grade is attempting every problem in the book. Even if you're in the ball park on a test question you'll get partcial credit.
Showed lots of favoritism towards certain students. Was very interested in material, but unable to learn due to his lack of clarity. Seems to care very little about teaching and students. Does know Organic well though.
Dr. Dembinski is an excellent professor. He is thoroughly knowledgeable about his material and is more than willing to help anyone who asks. True he makes his exams challenging but the end result is that if you study hard for his exams you will do very well on the MCAT and following courses.
I dropped him after the first day. His class is unfrikkenbelievably hard. 60% is a 3.0 that's unheard of. If you take his class, register, and dont bother going to class for anything. 100%guarantee failure, if you don't fail you should get your money back.
Do not take this prof. Take it another semester, or take it elsewhere. Organic Chem is hard enough, dont make your learning experience worse by adding Dembiniski to it all.
I had him for Organic 2 and I think that he is a great teacher. He will do anything to help you out, including extra lectures on the weekends. I found his quizzes very helpful, and his exams are not hard at all if you do your homework.
Dr. Dembinski is awesome. Yes, he is very difficult and it requires hard work. However, people who take this class are mostly going into the health science field. Becoming a doctor is hard work, this could be your time to get used to it.
He is a very good professor. If you do the problems in the back of the book and know his lectures notes, his exams are not impossible. He has a huge curve and takes most of the questions from the back of the book and his lecture notes.. Great guy
This is a hard class no matter the professor. he did a good job explaining things, and his metaphores are GREAT! I'm glad i took this class with him.
I think he does not know the meaning of his subject - organic specroscopy does not mean nmr only. Most unclear, most unreliable guy. He is not interested in teaching. Read the book of Bill Kemp. You can learn things better if an inanimate object teaches you.Do not ever attempt to take this class, you will commit the biggest mistake in your life.
Before teaching, this guy must know that Organic spectroscopy does not mean nmr only. He does not anything beyond nmr, showed a lot of partiality to his lab students only. Never take this Prof, this will be your worst experience in life. Instead of 3 h exam, he takes 6h exam - which is highly unrealistic.
His exams are too long for a one hour exam. The material he teachs is no where close to the exam questions.
This prof is AWFUL! You can barely understand his lecture, his notes are ridiculous and his tests are absurd. He might as well hand out a blank piece of paper and call it a test. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF!! Some people are NEVER meant to teach or should even eattempt it. TERRIBLE!!!!
Study your text book and be able to do solve all problems in each chapter. Make sure you fully understand mechanisms because on tests and quizzes he will throw you the curveballs and expect you to solve problems you've never had examples of. I disagree with another students comment, partial credit is virtually nonexistent, all or nothing.
Difficult class-prof expects that you know detailed info about topics covered in book and in lecture. Tests are very challenging. Do all the problems in the book but be ready for the unexpected on the exams. Do well on quizzes-they may help your grade in the end. I learned a lot but spent at least 10-15 hours/week on this class. Good luck!
Very difficult professor. Test questions are quite difficult. Do all the questions in the book because you need to know minute details about mechanisms and reactions. Partial credit is typically not give on exams. Do well on the quizzes - they will help your grade.
This is the worst teacher I've ever had. He is rude to students, you can't understand him, he is an egomaniac, and does not care how students do in the class. The class average on exams was a 35%. He gives no partial credit and uses metaphors he thinks are helpful, but actually they have nothing to do with organic chem-I am a senior with a 3.8 GPA
He's not as bad as everyone is saying... YOU are expected to do 95% of the work, come to class prepared, and only rely on him to use lecture to clarify things you've already read, or office hours to discuss specific topics. Tests cover EVERYTHING... Very demanding class overall.
This professor is a pain. YOu will truly have heart problems after taking his tests. The directions and wording on the test are often confusing and unclear. CAses where he only said 1 word for a section and was done lecturing for that specific section.Does not know how to speak English. He sayss Hmm 100% of the time, thinking of a word.
Very demanding but isn't that why you are in college. You must put in a lot of time to get a good grade, but you WILL KNOW the material, not just memorize for testing.
Dr.Debenski is one of the best professors here at OU, true he is difficult but its a hard class and you need to know the materials either for chemistry majores of for the MCAT. he has a huge curve at the end, if you know what are you doin its not impossible to get a 4.0
THE hardest class I've ever taken. But I'm leaving this class feeling like I could honestly work in research. You will work harder than you have b4, and hate him at times but you will realize that all the questions are fair and you KNOW what you're talking about. ONLY for ppl who take learning seriously. 10 hrs/week absolute minimum studying.
Wow. For $267,000 ($1600 x 167 students) one would assume that OU would be able to afford a professor that can actually TEACH students. There is no doubt in my mind that he is a brilliant chemist, however, he cannot communicate the subject to anyone with less knowledge than his own. I expect to work, but did NOT expect to be completely on my own.
AWFUL professor, does not care that many students fail his class. Literal homework assignment is to complete every problem from every chapter of the book. He's always in his office for help, but it sucks that he doesn't teach ANYTHING in lecture--even admitted he was bad at lecturing to our class. I would definitely recommend a different prof!

Orgo is a difficult class no matter who you take. I recommend going to lecture: he usually tests on the stuff he talks about in class. I studied 10 hours a week, did the practice problems and got a 4.0; so it's not impossible. You have to put in the time and effort. After Dembinski i feel I can do well in any class i take. Good Luck :)
His class is the hardest and most stressful I have ever taken. He doesn't give any helpful notes; he expects that the students read the entire book and do every single problem. Average class grade on each exam is about 50%! He does, however, give quizzes which count as extra credit at the end.
Dembinski is one of my favorite professors! Most helpful professor I have ever had. Tests are difficult, but he gives weekly quizzes which count as extra credit. I studied about 12 hours/week and got a 4.0 so it's not impossible. If you are a premed/pharm student TAKE HIS CLASS. He makes sure you master the material.
Organic chemistry is hard no matter what. Dembinksis class is challenging, but you will come out with full mastery of organic chemistry. This is needed if you are a premed/prepharm student. Take dembinksi, hes hard, but it will pay off in the end! I learned soo much from taking his class! Great prof, you just have to put in 100% of your effort.
Bring headphones and watch the khanacademy lectures instead. Trust me. He's a nice guy, but he did very little to clarify difficult concepts. Overall, a good grade is not impossible, had I found khanacademy sooner, I probably could have managed an A.
Great prof. Explains what he is teaching and keeps you entertained with his jokes. Would recommend his class. Great guy.
At first hard to understand but extremely helpful. He's always available even came to school on the weekend. The class is VERY DIFFICULT and the test are somewhat impossible. (KNOW MECHANISMS) However, taking this class has made me an organic chemistry pro and I hate chemistry! The MCAT organic chemistry section was easy because I took him.
Horrible prof. Needs to retire. Can't understand him and he does not help. Can be rude. I ended up having to go to tutoring everyday and teach myself. Skips points that he thinks is easy even though this is a 100 level class. Going to class was a waste of time because I still had to teach it to myself. Take class with Saed he's much better.
I think he has a tough time dumbing it down. He's super helpful and will even come in on Saturday to meet with you. But his teaching style is minimalist. Doing well with him requires total self study. You may as well skip the class session and learn the stuff from the book. He'll bend over backwards to help you, but the onus is on you to seek help.
He was a good teacher. First time he taught Chem 104, he had trouble making it easier to understand but he did help a lot. He sent out study guides for the final exams, and was always available for questions. I loved him as a person and He did a good job teacher. He also curved the exams a lot. He made the class fun to come to!
Roman is the best professor I have ever had. He makes chemistry pleasant and enjoyable. His analogies make perfect sense, and he inspires me to be all that I can be.
Easy class
Just finishing his Orgo 2 class right now. I'm not sure why he has such bad ratings on here. He is my favorite professor at OU! He's very nice and helpful, and if you go to his office hours, he'll get to know you. Orgo 2 is not a cakewalk, so it's not his fault if you don't get the grade you want. Do LOTS of problems. Partial credit is given too.
It's not AS bad as people say, and it's very doable without killing yourself studying. My advice is this; don't blow off the quizzes. He makes them sound marginal, but he makes them all extra credit, and by the end it really ads up. For our class we had almost 100 points of extra credit in quizzes... That's a full exam, and 400/500 is a 4.0...
Great Prof. Easy class
The quizzes were xtra credit which saved me. 90% of test questions came from the homework and examples in the book. Don't wait till last minute to study and you will 4. He is funny, very helpful, and wants you to succeed. Has an accent but is still understandable. Highly recommended
I had him for Orgo 1 and now i'm taking him for Orgo 2. Tough class but great professor. I usually can't sit through a lecture but he's funny so it's not too bad. Take him!
Great teacher, quizzes are extra credit... read the book do the problems i got a 3.7 in the class.. hell always be there to help you
Easily the best chem instructor I have had. Funny, interesting, very helpful (great office hours), gives extra credit. Partial credit is abundant if you study and actually write something. You can also go and argue points back (he won't take any away). He genuinely wants you to learn the material. Take his class, you will learn something.
This is a very challenging course. Go to class, there are pop quizzes that contribute to your grade. Dr. Dembinski is an awesome person. This class requires much self motivation and practice alone. Buy the textbook and solution manual, they are essential for success. Do EVERY PROBLEM in the textbook, they often show up on exams.
He has a great sense of humor and is very approachable in class and in his office hours. He gives weekly pop quizzes which serve as extra credit at the end of the semester; however, the tests are challenging and written. They require a lot of practicing questions at the end of the chapter. Give yourself time in advance to study.
You really have to work for a good grade in this class. I read every chapter and did every problem in each chapter as well as made flashcards and studied almost daily and still got in the 80s on the exams and an 80 on the final. This is not a class you can cram for but he makes that clear. Quizzes are extra credit and pretty easy, be prepared.
Prof dembinskis lectures never made sense to me so i had to read the book and do problems to figure it out on my own. The averages on his exams were 40s and 50s which is about what i was getting. Go to class because he gives pop quizzes that end up being extra credit which helps a lot. I ended with a 3.0 in the class
He is the worst when it comes to organic chemistry. He turns an already hard subject into your worst nightmare. Be ready to put in a ton of hours. You have to read the book follow along to get a decent grade. Lots of reaction memorization. If you hate organic chemistry, do not take it with him.
This professor is really funny, but the point is he cannot teach. He has a very odd accent that makes understanding harder. During the second week of orgo 2, he decided it was appropriate to take a vacation and have 2 other student instructors teach the class. Do not take with him. Look elsewhere. We were screwed by OU as we had professor Stamper.
This is already a very challenging class and taking it during the summer did not make it any easier. Going to class and doing ALL the book problems are keys to success! The exams are very heavily based on the book, and often there will be exact problems on the exam. Put in the work and you should do well. A challenging but not an impossible class.
Dr. Dembinski is highly knowledgeable. If you are looking for an easy A do not take him; however, if you are trying to really learn the material for the MCAT,PCAT,OAT,DAT, etc, then consider Dr. Dembinski. Taking him in the summer if difficult and I would not recommend it unless you are a good student. Difficult class but feasible to do well.
He offered extra credit.. but then took it away from us. Total of 35 points*
He does not give any partial credit points back on exams so it makes it very difficult to score high on exams. He had two first time teaching internteaching our lecture so a majority of the class was basically lost the whole time. We brought this to his attention and he did not seem to care.
Worst professor. If you wanna know your material for your standardized test, you can take any other prof, if you put in the time, you'll learn it. His exams are IMPOSSIBLE. Even people who knew their crap barely got 70%. It was his first time teaching a summer course and was absolutely HORRIBLE at it. Usually gives xtra credit, none, no curve.
Being a Biochemistry major on a full-ride academic scholarship, I'm fine at any level class. Orgo2 is meant to be a very difficult class; however, Dembinski's exams have proved impossible for even the top students. Class avg: near 40% for all exams. If you want a shot a med/nursing school: listen to my advice and take elsewhere.
He knows his stuff but if you don't know it you're most likely not getting your 2.0 that you at least need. Pre-Meds who need 3.0 take it somewhere else
This professor is a total genius! Premeds who want to do well on the MCAT i suggest you take him. This is not an easy course but if you actually wanna understand and learn the material, take him. His grading scale doesn't make it too hard to get a decent grade plus 95% of the problems on the exams are from the textbook, SO DO EVERY PROBLEM!
Taking this professor made more serious in my academic career. He basically pulls problems/figures from the book and puts them on the test. His lectures are very clear. If you are someone who is intelligent and can memorize/apply lecture information really well, there is no need to do all of the book problems. Take this class with him and study.
avoid taking him at all costs his class is like learning 2+2 in class and then having to solve derivative problems on the test
Organic Chemistry is difficult. It involves doing a lot of homework to understand concepts and additional memorization of chemical reagents and structures. Thats the class, not the teacher. Dr D is very accessible and his lectures always contain interesting information about the reagents/products. His exams are mostly straight from the book.
Half of you will take him and pass and the other half will either drop out or fail. I'm not going to sugar coat it, his exams are the hardest thing i've experienced. Yeah his grading scale is curved but thats because he knows his exams are impossible to pass. They consist of few MC but mostly short answer. Study EVERY book practice problem.
This is probably the hardest class you will take in university. His exams do not make it easier, however if you are a individual who is going to encounter Organic Chemistry on some form of standardized test (MCAT for me), Professor Dembinski will prepare you thoroughly. Study hard and memorize the reactions - you'll be fine.
Chemistry is a second language to this man. He is fluent, brilliant, and comfortable in chemistry. He adds humor to his lectures that feigns you've got this. Study your appropriate word here ass off. You're smart, so be smart.
Good teacher with some humor in the lectures. Exams were right from the book problems. Yes, the more difficult ones at the end, but still, they are RIGHT THERE in the book. So do a couple easy ones and then jump to the harder ones. And if you cant do them, go see him for help, he seems happy to help.
I am a chemistry major. I got a 4.0 in orgo 1. I took Dembinski for orgo 2 and I have had the worst semester ever. His exams are impossible. They are very long and rarely have any MC. Orgo is a tough subject, but I'm a chem major and did well in orgo 1, but now I'll be lucky to get a 2.0 in this class. His lectures are useless, you'll have to read.
Truly does not care whether you pass the class with a good grade or not. His exams were all extremely harder than they needed to be, making the ACS final seem like a piece of cake. He doesnt curve a single thing and some people wont even pass. Truly the worst professor Ive had yet.
All these reviews are reviewing the class not Dembinski. The class is hard, but the professor is amazing. He tries to be funny during lectures and his lectures are very helpful. You have to read the book and the 3 tests are difficult. But it isn't impossible to do well in the class. You also have extra credit pop quizzes. 11/10 Demb is a God.
Dembinski did a good job explaining the topics. He expects the students to go above what he lectures in class which requires a lot of textbook reading and practicing the textbook problems, exams were hard but based off similar textbook questions. Pop quiz counts as EC. Class is curved out of 100 points overall, (4.0 only needs 400/500 points)
Dr. Dembinksi is brilliant, kind, and he cares about his students. Orgo 2 is hard, so you need to put in a lot of work in order to do well. That said, his lectures are actually helpful and he is available in office hours to help. He is funny. Pop quizzes (mostly extra credit). Read the book and do book problems. Exams are straight forward. Study!
This class is challenging, however there are a lot of chances for extra credit. READ the book and do ALL questions in the chapter and at the end of the book. He is nice and funny. It is possible to do well!
His lectures are great, as he explains things well, and he is very funny and kind. He is ALWAYS in his office and more than willing to help. Was very adaptable and understanding with the transition to online due to COVID19 400pts is an A. Doesn't matter how you get there so quizzes are essentially extra credit. DO EVERY SINGLE BOOK QUESTION.
Dembinski is a nice person but you definitely have to do a lot of practice homework and reading on your own. He expects a lot from students and you really have to know the material to do well on the exams. His lectures aren't insanely important but can be helpful if you read the chapter first and then go to class.
Prof Dembinski cares about his students, but he expects everyone to understand ochem like he does. Grades were based on 3 exams and the final, it was hard to make up any points if you did poor on the exams. Grades them hard too. He does tell you what to expect on the exams. 10/10 rec studying from the textbook. I watched OrganicChemTutor for help.
Was not very fond of taking 3/4 exams when we could've had the chance to take 4 exams online. He cares about his students, but I feel like he shouldn't be pulling so many questions from the book because some of the problems from the book is not equivalent to what the notes teach us.
It is clear Dembinski knows Orgo very well but he isn't the best at teaching it. Lectures were all over the place. If you want to be on his good side, participate in class and ask questions. The book has everything you need. There is a lot of material and exams are hard so be ready to give this class a lot of time.
Good guy but lazy prof. Doesnt proctor or grade his own exams and takes 2 weeks to post grades. He kept changing how he planned on grading the class so we never knew our progress until finals were posted. Lectures cover maybe half of whats in exams, rest you have to learn from book or SI and material/exams are very hard.
Awesome and hilarious guy. Curved pretty hard but waited until after the final so did not know exactly what grade I would get. 4 exams and that's it. 1st was free response but average was so bad the rest were MCQ. Final was ACS exam. Does lecture by projecting handwritten notes. I recommend reading the book and going to SI, but I personally didn't
Okay person. Horrible professor. He even said he can make the exams easier so that the average is in the 80s. But he chooses to make the exams so difficult the averages are in the 40s. Doesn't even make sense. Don't bother attending in person. You won't learn anything.
Dembinski makes lectures funny and definitely knows chemistry, he's just not the best at teaching it. READ THE BOOK and do the questions in there (also go to SI). Honestly, this was one of the most challenging classes I have taken. I studied for hours, showed up to lectures, and got a B after a curve. Be prepared for challenging exam questions.
Organic Chemistry will always be hard. Study the book and go to office hours with questions. Dembinski is very friendly and really knows his stuff. Lectures are boring, but its chemistry. Good prof. O Chem sucks.
As is the case with most research professors, he was pretty poor at actually teaching. SI is absolutely required if you want to do well. Others praise him for humor and jokes but those do not help you learn. Mostly reads off slides and adds on to them, which is most of the time unhelpful. He was the only choice, so suck it up I guess.
Dembrinski is great as a supplement to your learning. In other words, if your first contact with the material is his lectures, you're already behind. Read the book and conceptualize ideas before coming to class.Generally speaking, with a class of this caliber, the work you put in is directly related to your results. An A is certainly achievable.
He's not a bad teacher, but he's not diligent or communicative enough about content compared to the standard of his exams. Especially because for O2, he included free-response questions, and administered ACS final. The grade is completely dependent on exams. Try to put in work outside of class, but even so he is pretty strict about grades.
had him for orgo 1&2. A=80%. grade is 3 exams (20%each)+final ACS(40%). READ THE TEXTBOOK. I didn't rely on the lectures but rather the textbook, SI, and office hours. he is very good 1 on 1. Super funny guy. work hard, study hard and understand the mechanisms. keeping a list of reagents throughout the semester will help for ACS. don't stress
I had Dembinski for two semesters of Orgo and suffered greatly. Pre-med gunners loved him. His lectures are unorganized and exams are extremely hard. Even after attending SI and reading the book I still felt confused. I spent well over 20 hours studying for each exam and did not do well. The only saving grace is the curve.
Took this online and cried everyday while taking it. Lectures are useless you'll have to read the textbook and do the textbook problems. 4 exams as your whole grade 3 midterms worth 100 points and 1 final worth 200. 400/500 is an A but the tests are crazy hard. Average was consistently around a 50% . Don't depend on curve bc it depends on average.
Dembinski is a tough but engaging prof. His lectures are hit-or-miss, so be sure to supplement with the textbook and resources like unstuck ai. Exams are challenging, but put in the work and you can do well. Overall, a demanding yet rewarding class.
DO NOT LISTEN TO ANYONE ON HERE. Run the other way I'm begging. This professor has a curve that makes an A only 80% but his exams are incredibly difficult. I've taken him for 1 and 2 and the test average for every test I've taken has been around a 50%. Great guy but not a good teacher and gives test questions much harder than the ones he teaches.
There is only 4 grades in the gradebook and its only exams. Extremely horrible professor, but kinda funny guy. But specifically as a professor probably one of the worst at OU, subject is hard yes but attending his lectures honestly makes things more confusing. Overall 0/10, if you are able to take Bayeh or Kinney would recommend!!
The class was difficult. Attending lectures is not beneficial at all. Must use the textbook to teach yourself. The exams are harder than anything he teaches and include information from Orgo 1. I recommend another professor, especially since he has free response questions on his exams that are very hard and unrelated to what he taught in class.
