He refuses to put notes online....and goes way too fast for anyone to keep up. I'm just going to attend another professor's lectures instead.
i think he tries, and his way of talking is awesome. its nice that he has a webpage to try to help the students. However, he does go a bit fast.
This prof DOES know how to teach. Unlike many others, he knows when to go fast (over the easier stuff) and when to slow down (over the hard stuff). If student s read their notes before, they'll know he does NOT go too fast. He only goes fast through the unimportant stuff. Really good prof!
hard to understand
The most adorable accent and sense of humour ever, he is super nice.
One of my most favorite professors. A great, smart teacher with lots of humour and interaction. He is extremely nice too. If you preread n do some preparation prior to his lectures, u will have a great time. I should have nominated him for professor nomination :)
Great prof. Makes all things easy, and goes over confusing topics again, just for our benefit. In class, waits for you to copy his notes, when they're important. He's got a great sense of humour (balls class =P),and his online quizes are so easy! You get 2 hrs for 6 questions;not even for the final do you get that. His accent is understandable, ezily.
I love this prof! He has a great sense of humour and is never dull (u will never fall asleep in this class!) He makes sure we understand the material before going on to another section. He would make overhead notes for the very next class to go over the material we don't understand. Pick him!!
He is a good professor, whether his students actually understand him or not, he really tries his best to explain concepts and most of the time, students do end up understanding the material.
really good prof, he's hilarious so class is never boring, he goes over this repeatedly to make sure you understand it, he was my favourite prof this semester
Really good prof. Tries to make class interesting and goes over everyting so many times. Very helpful and very knowledgeable. Definately my favorite prof so far.
Tries hard... Goes over stuff many times... Often funny, in an awkward way. Accent understandable, but gets on your nerves if you happen to be in a crappy mood. Powerpoint slides pass by SOOOO fast, that its almost impossible to take notes... Online quizzes RULE! Hard course, though.
omg i love chemistry for the first time in my life! He makes the class so interesting and he really makes hard concepts really easy to understand. and did i mention that he's GORGEOUS!!! there's something so irresistible about this man, hehe! and he has the cutest accent...*sigh* lmao!
Wonderful prof! His lectures are extremely helpful, and he goes at just the right speed. I actually enjoyed going to chem for once. He's funny and his accent is adorable.
He replies emails fast, literaly, and his explanations on emails are pretty good.
such a sweet guy! soo helpful! tons of office hours! anlways answers emails. funny! classes pass very fast. Accent is soo weird... very understandable but its nothing u've ever heard!( kind of interesting to listen to )overall great proff!
he is an awesome prof and he cares alot about his students, he is really nice with amazing eyes...i love chem because of him...also his personality is truly amazing
Dr. Krems is an amazing professor! He's one of the very few professors that know how to teach & actually care about their students understanding concepts. Don't ever hesitate to ask him a question because he's super friendly, has convenient office hours, & his lectures are not at all boring! I would definitely take another course from him again.
Dr. Krems is extremly nice and understanding. He answers your emails within like 2-3 hours. He answered my questions before the midterm up until 2AM. lol. He repeatedly goes over hard concepts and always asks us to come to office hours to ask questions instead of looking at the answer keys. He is the best prof. at UBC so far. He is also good lookin
Very attractive prof. The smartest guy I have ever met. Extremely nice and pure. Amazing eyes. Pick him. By the way, I am not flattering.
Dr. Krems is the best professor ever. He is very nice, smart, helpful and also good looking. He always dresses so professionally. Some might think he is too young to be a prof, but just go to one of this lectures, you'll be amazed at how smart and cool he is. I took 3 friends on the last day with me to class. They all liked his teaching too.
Dr. Krems is an incredibly helpful prof! He tries to make sure that everyone understands the concepts and has tons of office hours to help those who need it. You can tell that he really wants his students to do well. His online quizzes were pretty easy also, as long as you follow what's happening in his lectures.
Best professor I have ever had. He made me want to attend class and even made me have a greater passion for chemistry. He ensures that everyone understands the concepts and is always available for help. He is also very funny and has a great bum ;) Definitely take one of his courses.
Very Good Prof. At first I was iffy because his lecture goes so fast but after the first week he slowed down and repeat hard concept. He is very approchable and very nice. Also he replies to emails and question within a day and it is really clear. He is very patient and nice.
Very smart and charismatic prof. Extremely helpful and easily approachable. Crystal clear with lectures and explanations. Classes go by super fast, actually FUN to attend, and a bonus: he's CUTE! Even students from other sections sat in his lectures. You can tell he sincerely cares about his students and their well being.
He is the best chem prof ever!
cool.
Dr.krems is a very good professor. He is easy to understand if you pay attention. one of the best
Great Prof! Definitely the BEST PROF @ UBC! I didn't think my prof was good cause he gave 10 minute, 30 mark quizzes. I came to this lecture instead. I actually understood the material, his explanations are crystal clear and he is humourous! Awesome Prof! Actually makes people enjoy Chemistry!
I hated chemistry before, but now I love him AND chemistry...awww he is so nice :)
Dr Krems is the one of my few favourite teachers. He is so magical that you would walk into his lecture as an idiot and walk out as a genius! Even if you dont understand concepts from other profs, there is always Krems you can go to. Other Chemistry profs definately no match compared to Krems. As a side note, I think hes hawt too =)
I can't say enough good things about my favourite prof, Dr. Krems! He is incredibly charismatic, kind, enthusiastic, and undoubtedly intelligent. He encouraged us to ask questions & inspired us to think beyond the concepts covered in class. I could tell that he really cares about helping his students succeed. BONUS: He has a great sense of humour!!
He is an AMAZING prof! He is very very helpful, genuinely concerned about our learning. sweetest professor ever!
Dr. Krems is an excellent prof - he really knows the subject matter, and encourages his students to visit during office hours to ask questions. I highly recommend him.
Dr. Krems is an AWESOME prof! He definitely gave me a good start to university. He really wants everyone to UNDERSTAND the material and he is very helpful. He'll always answer your questions clearly to make sure you understand it. Best prof I had last term! :)
One of the best profs I had last term. It was fortunate of me to have picked his section - he made my first ever term in university much more enjoyable. He basically gives full paragraph answers to every single question people write on vista, not to mention his clarity in class.
Professor Krems is the best teacher I had in my first term of university. I had 0 ability in chemistry before going into that class because of a rather negligent high school teacher, but Krems made everything so interesting and easy to understand. Like others have said, he cares for his students so much. He's amazing!
Very helpful teacher - my favourite for my first semester ever!
Best prof in my first year. So funny and engaged. Very clear and teaches the concepts well. I went to other prof's lecturs and none compared to him. Also he's the ONLY chem 121 prof that answered questions on vista. SO USEFUL!!
Love him as a prof! Extremely helpful and easy to understand. His classes are very enjoyable, and as a bonus he is hilarious.
He is very funny and engadging, what i love about his teaching methods is that he is always willing to help. That goes from answering and going over questions that people ask in class to discussion boards on vista. He's always on vista helping with questions and providing support.
This man is amazingg! His eyes, his adorable quality, he is so cute! Two words: eye candy. Besides that, he is a really great prof, manages to keep you alert in the lectures, and usually accent's make it harder to understand, but his only helped me because I paid closer attention! You can tell he really loves chemistry, so you want to too.
Very effective lectures, and really cares about students. Will answer questions on the vista discussion board very rapidly and ensure that you have understood the concepts. Prepares you extremely well for the exams.
This professor was so helpful in every way. On Vista, he would answer every question that students ask. And his sense of humour makes coming to class fun!
best chem prof there is, he's helpful and i swear he answered all of the 800 questions on vista. not to mention his section in chem was the highest of all sections
Make use of his vista discussion page. It's like having a personal chem tutor, who is also your prof. He's also very clear and engaging during classes. His classes also have MUCH MUCH higher averages than the rest, coincidence? I think not.
Dr. Krems was my favourite prof in first year. He made coming to class worthwhile and he had a sense of humour. He answered all of my questions and I suggest going to his office hours. Unfortunately he is taking a sabbatical in 2011, but take his class if you can!
the best chem prof period.
Everyone else that did not have Professor Krems seemed to have a difficult time with chemistry, I was so fortunate to have this amazing professor with humor and clear teachings!
I really hated this class, but I think he did the best he could and genuinely cared about the students.
Very nice teacher that equipped with great knowledge in quantum mechanics. Try to break down hard part into pieces and provide his understanding as suggestions. Quite patient.
I'm so glad I had Dr. Krems for my first Chem class. Great proff, and 100% recommended.
He's everything that you could hope for in a professor. Very clear in his teaching and integrates lectures well with practice material at home. Always willing to answer any question in detail. Highly recommended.
Krems is an amazing prof. I mean it. We had a 5 minute video every class to keep us awake, he would answer every question without judgement. Quantum is hard to wrap your brain around and he gets that. All he cares is that you develop an appreciation for it, and he's effective in that.
The best in whole chemistry department. Need no other words!
Krems made my first Chemistry course a breeze! He will always stop his lecture for questions when asked, without judgement. He even asks 'can I move on?' before switching slides so that students have time to finish taking notes! There's a reason why his section for CHEM 121 has one of the highest averages! Absolutely amazing prof!
Prof was great but Chem121 for me is like learning a new language. Genial !
In retrospect, man, I should've gone to more office hours. Krems is mind-blowingly awesome. Seriously, you can do well relying on his lectures alone, if you pay attention and take good notes. He has a strange yet great sense of humour. Once he used a mop to point at the screen because he couldn't find his laser pointer. I miss him already :(
This physicist in chemistry department is SO INSPIRING AND TRULY PASSIONATE towards what he's doing. He ignited my passion towards quantum mechanic by illustrating how it is the best theory so far that explains the universe which was absolutely mind blowing to me. He was the one who made paradigm shift happened.
Prof Krems is a beautiful human, and an outstanding professor. He goes above and beyond to attend to his students needs, and is brilliant. His ability to transform complicated and foreign concepts into illuminating and easy to understand examples is amazing. He inspires me to be a better person and encouraged me to chase my dreams! Take his class
Dr Krems is a passionate, humourous and caring prof who inspired me with his love for Chemistry. His lectures are interesting but would be easier to follow with pre-reading. One downside is that he does not post his lecture notes online so be ready with a camera. Nevertheless, I would definitely recommend Dr Krems!
Krems is an amazing professor. He explains concepts really clearly and prepares students well for the exam. His lectures are really interesting because he is truly passionate with what he's doing. Would definitely take his class again!
Krems is truly an amazing professor with a great sense of humour. Lectures are very informative and interesting. His lectures prepare you well for exams. So glad I got him for CHEM 121, would definitely take again.
Incredible lecturer, really funny and you can tell he's passionate about what he does. Definitely made a good impression as a first year prof. Take his class if possible!
Great experience with Prof. Krems. Would definitely take another class with him.
my favorite first-year course.
The best chemistry professor.
Krems doesn't follow the textbook for chem 121 and it shows in his class averages (highest of all the sections every time). He really cares about his students doing well, answering questions in class and urging people to go to office hours. He's got a great sense of humour which makes even the most boring of lectures bearable. Great prof!
Was a very kind and fun prof to have - definitely would take his section of other courses. He actually made me want to go to his lectures and made the material relevant and interesting. He's also really good at answering questions and expanding on examples! Overall, I really enjoyed his section and highly recommend it.
Amazing prof. Very good at explaining concepts and always willing to answer questions during or outside of class. Super funny too! He also prepares his students really well, and his section usually has the highest average on exams.
Best first year Chem prof :D
He is a nice man. But I felt the course is very very difficult after listening to his explanation of the course material. There is no answer key for practice final and real midterm exam, he asked students to come to his office hour is they want to get answer keys. I used to study the answer keys by myself I am not used to going for prof's help
awesome prof!
The thing with Krems is that he's really nice and wants everyone to pass but that's about all he has going for him. He's not that great at explaining things, whenever I'd ask for help he'd just tell me to think about it more. With that being said his exams are super fair and pretty easy
Dr. Krems truly cares about his students. He leads discussions on Piazza and responds quickly even on weekends. He also held plenty of office hours during exams. The course is hard, but I would have dropped the course if it wasn't taught by him.
Krems is really caring. He genuinely wants his students to do well. This course is not easy and must be hard to teach, but Krems does his best and encourages his students. He asks/listens to student feedback/struggles and will answer any question. The material is challenging and thermodynamics is pain but Krems' exams are reasonable!
He is one of the most wonderful profs you can ever meet in CHEM class at UBC. He wants you to pass this course with at least a B. He is caring and wants his students to succeed in his class. I was so worried about this course at the start but ended up being a GPA booster despite the fact that it is an upper-level chem course.
Although CHEM 304 is a difficult/boring course, Dr. Krems is there to make sure you pass. His immense passion of the topic and positive energy he brings to each class is contagious. He really cares for his students; he answers EVERY SINGLE Piazza question, usually in under an hour. He made the midterm worth 0% if you did better on the final.
Dr. Krems clearly cares a lot about all of his students. On each quiz he asks for feedback about the course, and after you turn it in he personally responds to each student. He's always willing to answer questions and he keeps the mood light in lectures with the occasional joke. Not to mention, he is incredibly inspirational come midterm season.
Though CHEM 121 is a very difficult course, Prof Krems is a very kind and understanding professor who clearly makes an effort to help his students understand and succeed in the course. Lovely and very intelligent individual. Try and take his course if you have to take 121.
Krems is a great prof. Chem 121 is hard but I think he did a good job teaching the content. When answering 1 on 1 questions his answers don't always breakdown the content enough so sometimes I still left confused. Overall, he showed that he cared about our success and literally said "I want you to all get As" which was motivating.
Genuinely an awesome prof, will ask to make sure students understand and if not will try to explain in another way, or set aside extra office hours. Is clear he believes in everyone, makes himself available and reachable through extra office hours and after class.
Dr. Krems was one of the best profs I had this semester. Although he can get off-topic sometimes, he is very caring and his lectures are fun. One problem I had was that he sometimes spends too much time talking about stuff I already knew and not enough time explaining the "harder" stuff in the course. I regret not giving this course 100%.
Loved him, super helpful and funny. He explains things really well in an engaging manner. Hard course but he made the tests/quizzes easier and understandable.
Loved him so much, I really hope I get him again in the future. Great professor, course material was difficult but he makes it easy to get marks.
I had him last semester, I'm only writing this cuz its almost midnight and I'm listening to my new prof drone on and on and just been thinking about how much I miss krems. appreciate him while u have him cuz he's the best chem prof at ubc.
CHEM 304 could be challenging but he explained everything clearly and I can engage with the content in almost every lecture. His grading system motivates you to always do better in the future. He does very cool research but he never found any of our questions dumb. Instead, he patiently answered all of them . Takes our feedback seriously. GOATED!
Lowky guys, it's gg's. If you study very hard and are ready for the MIDTERM/FINAL you will get the A+ but other wise be prepared to get the F grade. Good luck boys!!!
he was a very caring prof who would give study tips for midterms/finals! Very helpful lectures as well.
Excellent at explaining things and always encourages questions. Easy to access with weekly office hours. Clearly enjoys teaching chemistry and extra practice problems are super helpful. Chill, clumsy, and funny guy who is generally enjoyable to listen to. Material is not so difficult when you ask questions and read the material clearly.
Super nice, funny guy who is extremely willing to help. Encourages questions and will do his very best to help you understand the material. Shows extra things that you don't see in the chirp or on practice tests, and even makes his own extra problems and quizzes for you to do. Flew through basics though and needed Stirchaks videos instead/with his.
Great lectures that try to engage the class. He encourages people to ask questions and will spend lots of time answering them. He also hosts weekly office hours and has Zoom discussions prior to exams. He cares about the success of every student.
An amazing person! Cares about your studying, tries to memorize people's names, taking on personal challenges with his students and is very approachable. HOWEVER, his slides are kinda disorganized and the course itself is very difficult. Spends a lot of time deriving equations in class and not so many images on slides, which can be hard to follow.
Professor Krems was super good at explaining concepts and was very motivational when exam seasons started. Do not miss class though, and pay attention in every lecture because he does move quite quickly with some topics. Very accessible outside class time
He's alright. I would recommend reading any phys chem textbook to supplement lectures. I consistently found myself confused with the basics he claimed was 'common sense.' He can teach though, which is a lot better than most profs. Content was, um, a lot for me to digest, not really his fault though.
Super awesome professor. Always inspiring and smiling during class. Despite the content being very difficult, I truly believe I learnt a lot in this class and he was very fair when creating exams. Dr. Krems genuinely cares about his students and their success and does everything he can to help us do well!
Fantastic prof, evidently cares a lot about his students. Hosts ample office hours/review sessions before exams + is always available after class. Doesn't use the textbook, so it's a good idea to read as well for exams. Slides are disorganized, lectures aren't recorded so showing up to lectures is key because he moves fast, but lectures are 10/10.
Throughout the semester, it was very clear Dr. Krems' top priority was student success. He is an engaging lecturer who teaches for understanding and not by the book. Every lecture, he would stay after class to answer any questions. Even after a difficult midterm, he continued to say "I believe everyone is capable of getting an A in this class".
Very educated in the course content and tries his best to explain and answer questions whenever students are confused. If you find it beneficial for lecturers to work through sample questions or explain the math involved, Dr. Krems probably won't be the best fit for you. Best way to succeed in his class: keep up w/ the chirp!!
Professor Krems is the CHEM GOAT. Always willing to help, and created various non-graded review assignments to help us with the course material and exams. He was also super accessible, and hosted various zoom sessions before exams for additional help. CHEM 121 is a difficult course, so remember to put in consistent work.
Professor Krems is helpful and hosts Zoom sessions before midterms and finals to review content and extra question help. He helps us understand concepts and offers us constant help to help us succeed! However, He goes into extended topics in his lectures that we often do not need to know about, but it is still good information to expand learning.
I found he moved really fast and was honestly too smart to be teaching a first year class. I found he blew through the important basics of this course way too fast and I had to so most of my learning on my own time. He's really helpful during office hours and hosts really good review sessions before exams that I found helpful.
Brushed off the basics during class and often focused on things irrelevant to our success. His class was hard to follow as he would ramble, and I had to watch other lectures. For a first-year class, please take it with another prof who can explain the basics without making you feel stupid. He made my questions feel foolish when I asked him.
He had frequent office hours and hosted review sessions before each midterm, very caring and wonderful prof! But his lectures weren't the most organized, sometimes I felt like they were not focused. Still great though and would def take again.
Roman Krems is a one-of-a-kind prof! He takes the time to get to know his students especially if you like to participate in class (e.g. will ask you your name when you answer/ask a question). He made the difficulty of course seem less heavy with his bright personality, but also was very clear of his expectations of us. Highly recommend taking him!!
Pros: TONS of practice questions with many directly word-for-word on the exam, super accessible outside of class on piazza. Cons: Immense favoritism towards select students. Referenced them by name in every class and made inside jokes in the middle of lecture?? Sometimes he would walk over and lecture only facing them....felt very unprofessional.
I believe he teaches his class like we are all PhD students in his higher classes. He favoured quantum mechanics, and rushed through some subjects. He is a very funny guy with good in class examples and practice questions. If you didn't take AP chem in high school he is very hard to follow, this class is mostly learn it yourself.
Krems was a super friendly prof who genuinely wanted students to learn. I'm not interested in thermodynamics, but Krems made it amazing for me. He still says hi to me when he sees me even though I wasn't the most active student. Super nice guy and great lecturer. Not an easy course, but you won't regret it even if it's not your strongest subject.
Dr. Krems is probably one of the best professors in the Chemistry department. He is always so caring, and makes sure students do not stress out over grades (before and after tests). He will always find ways to make you try your best. Even though the content is VERY hard, if you work with him, you will get an A+ (as he always promises)!
I can't even begin to describe how much I loved Krems as a prof. He's so unbelievably kind and he's so open to suggestions to make the course better. Even if you do poorly on the midterm (I did), there is still hope! I hope everyone takes 304 with Krems if possible. He's so passionate about the content and that shows in his teaching skills.
