He's got a great sense of humour and has lots of experience behind him.

Not funny, voice too soothing = sleep, strange
best teacher ever....easy too

he is engaging and full of knowledge in all sorts of areas. He cracks me up too
Scattered, difficult to take notes in class, no connection betw lecture and text
Best prof ever had. Makes lecture fun.
Very entertaining lectures. Great guy to learn from.
Awesome as a professor and a human being. Lectures were interesting and insightful. Reinforces my decision to major in Cmns.
Wonderful prof!
great prof!!
One of my favourite SFU profs!
I've done two degrees and Roman is the best prof I've EVER had.
love how he's so flexible!!!! such a cool guy^^
Very entertaining and helpful prof! Super nice and willing to assist, let alone hilarious and fun! Having another class w/him this semester again! Yeah~
Simply amazing prof and human being. Makes you want to look forward to lecture each week. He's funny, personable, intelligent, educated and confident enough in himself to make his students feel the same way.
excellent
One of the best profs at SFU. Great!
Hilarious! Really makes the lecturs enjoyable, and knows his stuff! Very easygoing and takes into consideration students feedback. Efficient emailer too!
Talks out of his ass. Lectures were totally irrelevant. Seemed like a really nice guy but I think he secretly wants to be a stand up comedian not a professor.
Pretty good
Best Prof Ever
Lectures are extremely boring. Talks way too much about his previous experience in the TV business. Uninteresting and poor sense of humour.
3 expensive text books, 2 of them can be considered communication bibles. lectures are a bit dry and irrelevant but overall, the prof is a humourous, nice guy.
Best prof ever!Stand on students' side..
a strong personality so you either like him or ya don't....i did - Roman is REAL, and a real relief compared to most in the idealistic world of Academia...his real-life experience was refreshing and well-needed in the CMNS department!
Roman is a hilarious, great lecturer. Really reasonable, zesty and interesting. He reminds me of a really happy pirate. Interesting approach to communications, flexible term paper. no final!
Roman does remind ppl of that father in "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" -- friendly and hilarious. Above all soooo knowledgeable! Yeah i agree that u either enjoy or dislike his way of teaching. He's teaching from his crisp CMNS experience, not the d
roman has the ability to be funny and make people laugh. but he went off topic almost 3/4 of all lectures this semester which made it really boring. didn't feel like anything was learned
Lectures were very boring! He was generous and eliminated the final. Roman is funny but the content isn't. Assignments were easy.
he's an extremely funny guy but carries such boring lectures; maybe it's b/c he change 220 into a TV-critical writing course and he seems like hez talkin about some crap that he doesn't even wanna tlk about.
lots of knowledge, loads of fun... took his course when his kid died. despite that he still taught great that term. all the respect to him!
he is an instructor with so much knowledge. he taught me how to deal with my first semester at sfu. he is an inpiring and insightful instructor. he is always ready to listen. i wish i could take all the courses he teaches.
Roman is very flexible and considerate of the students' needs. The written assignment is a strange and interesting intro to communications studies.

Best. Prof. Ever.
One of the best lecturers in the CMNS dept....he made the boring material interesting. Assignments weren't too hard...and marking was pretty easy =)
very impressive
I hear he's better in other courses. But his style of teaching CMNS 220 was absolutely terrible - highly disorganized overly demanding.
You haven't lived unless you've taken a class with Roman.
Inspiring
Roman is such a cool teacher. He has a way of teaching that is all-inspiring. He's got a lot of experience and knowledge about all realms of communication making the classes easy to understand and relate to.
His lectures are such a waste of my time. I don't think that hearing about his adventures with flaming bags of poo is very relevant to course material.
Hmmmm... Roman, Roman, Roman. You love him or you hate him. Personally, I think he's amazing to talk to. He definitely has interesting stories, and he genuinely cares about his students. However, he's NOT a good lecturer, and is hardly ever available as he has too many outside commitments.
Roman is a really funny and brilliant prof. Lectures are always entertaining, but he's not very organized with notes. He's easy going and understands the students. Notes are put up on the web to make it easy to study for exams. Take cmns with Roman if you want a good laugh.

Funny and easy-going, but totally unorganized (due to laziness) and provide unclear assignment instructions for students. I wouldn't recommand taking his lower level courses; take upper courses with him instead.
such a great prof! his lectures are entertaining and interesting.
Excellent guy. He's an awesome person to talk to (really, really interesting character). NOT a good educator/professor though. Don't expect to learn a whole lot from his lectures.
If you're liked flexible deadlines and unorganized but eventually meet your deadlines anyhow to add to it you have an unusual way of learning, then you might want to be in his class. However, if you're loved organized notes and used to structure in your classes, then you might not like this class. Dry humor, brilliant and intelligent man.
Uhh... perhaps time to retire?
If you are into kittens and learning about NOTHING, take this class. Cmns 363 requires A LOT of work and I did not learn a single thing from him. If you like disorganized profs, take this course.
It seems to be true, you either love Roman or hate Roman. I love Roman. I think his lectures are insightful, and he is very committed to his students. I like that he doesn't follow overheads and stick to a specific regimen. His classes are unique and I don't attribute that to disorganization. If you are committed, you'll succeed in his class.
A true teacher. He place the real world at the students fingertip and does not talk from the ivory tower like 90% of most profs. He has worked his craft in the the real world and has given it back to the students of communications at SFU.
great prof, interesting and accessible
Roman is so hot. He teaches from the heart. True, his class is a real challenge, he is determined to get the most out of his students. His aim is to open the eyes of his students to the reality of society, its institutions and technology. A real inspiration. If you're simple and linear, you will have trouble understanding him.
he is a hilarious very well read engaging professor, an ideal renegade academic
Interesting guy, has a lot to say but when it comes to clarity and getting the point across he is missing something. For a communications professor I would hope he could answer a one sentence question with maybe 4 sentences instead of 4 heavy paragraphs of useless jargon. I'd love to sit and have coffee with the guy but he just isn't my style.
No structure to his lectures, he just rambles on and on... good if you're comfortable with that teaching style (I'm not). His questions are very ambiguous (you'd have to read it ten times to understand what it's asking). He's probably better as an upper-level prof... but definitely impossible for students hoping to grasp the fundamentals of cmns.
i honestly don't understand what material he wants us to know for the final exam! i wish he would focus his material more, because at this point im extremely lost and his tedious assignments are no help... he also likes huge long fancy words that you have to end up looking for on google... no fun! i don't recommend you take 110 with him!

Don't listen to the first years, they don't know much about CMNS or university teaching yet. They will later find out, Roman is one of the best profs you'll ever have, and very democratic...but he'll work your ass off, no doubt about that.
Left leaning prof. Not a surprise. Vulgar. One joke he made was about finding a tape of our parents “doing it” (and – not that it should at all – but it had nothing to do with the subject matter). Unprofessional, and vulgar, so not a good prof. There is worse, but there is also much much better. What am I paying for?
Great person, not so great as a prof. He's got a great personality that is engaging and genuine, but I'm definitely not accustomed to his teaching style. His lectures lack complete structure and most of them are spent watching stupid movies that really serve no purpose except maybe as a point of reference for the midterm.
Greatest ever. But most people just don't get his flow.
Don't listen to the first years; these people will soon be weeded out. Roman is a great prof. He's one of the few who actually care about teaching. You'll do fine as long as you do the readings, and realize that you are no longer in high school.
THIS GUY IS THE FUNNIEST PROF EVER. HE IS THE BEST. THE LECTURES ARE 2 HOURS, BUT HE MAKES HIS LECTURES SO INTERESTING THAT YOU DONT FALL ASLEEP.
Great Prof, approachable, understanding. Clear to those that bother to engage him. It's important to be "vulgar" sometimes too, and he does a good job of it.
interesting lectures, but his voice may bore u to sleep. exams are easy just do the math and memorize a few Q's out of the list he gives you to study. There were also pretty long breaks haha which was awesome. Some of the TAs cant speak very good english...
I had Roman for 110 also and really enjoyed him. Midterms are very fair, he gives you the questions in advance and you just have to study them. He's a really smart guy so sometimes somethings he says flies over my head, but I still enjoy his lectures. My 110 TA kinda sucked, wasn't too helpful, but my 353 TA Daryl has been awesome so far.
Roman is the best prof I've ever had. His courses are great.
First thing's first, his lectures are almost completely useless, and unless you have a HUGE interest in the subject you will find yourself (and 85% of the other students) skipping by the halfway point. The redeeming quality is that he lists the EXACT questions that he will be selecting from for the final. Learn enough of those and you'll do fine.
Yes, Roman is a tad disorganized, but there is a method to his madness and if one puts in the effort to do all the required work for the course Roman's lectures become interesting as well as usefull.
entertaining but no educational substance. wikipedia is not sufficient as the ONLY class courseware
I've taken 353 and 345 with Roman and I will take as many classes with him as I can. I admit, he's not the greatest organizer, and sometimes I don't understand how the readings relate to the course, but he just has such an incredible mind it is an honour and a pleasure to take a class with him.
yay roman. he's the best prof of all time.
rate prof, he shows a great interest of the subject. during his lectures we can see that he got a lot of knowlegde from a variety subjects. some times, even whe he is off topic, we can still a lot learn from it.
Roman knows a lot. A LOT. He also likes to tackle problems head on. This seems to result in him doing minimal prep for some classes, leading to some confusion as lessons get mixed or disappear all together into incredibly entertaining stories about himself. This is the only negative thing I can say about him. He is great in every other way.
Ok... I've taken 7 classes with Roman. He taught me more about life than anything else. His lectures prove to be so valuable outside of your academic life. It would be a shame if you don't get a chance to learn from someone like him. He's an easy marker, and he gives a lot of A's, but that's not why you should take his classes. He's the best.
Roman's classes are very interesting and he teaches from the heart! He is very very knowledgeable and crystal clear on things. I enjoy every class I think with him and actually learned alot about many things; life, history...etc.
Best professor. Ever. He's a gem.
Great prof. He's amazing in lecturing; it's always interesting. Communications isn't my major, but i've been wanting to make it my minor after taking this course. Highly recommend this course.
he is like the greatest professor i ever had. HE IS HILAAAAAAARIOUS ! i love him
He's a really cool prof. Provides great insight to the history of communication. Makes lectures fun and is an easy-going person!
Fascinating lectures. Most interesting prof I've ever had. Rambles quite a bit, but gives you everything you need to do very well in the course. If you want to actually enjoy your lectures, take one of his courses.
Awesome professor! Hilarious in lectures, very blunt and open professor that is extremely down to earth. Awesome lecturer and great knowledge in the field of Communications and Media History.
The course covered very interesting topics. The Zielinsky and Ong text were absolutely wonderful. If you did the readings the midterm and final were very manageable. Roman gives entertaining lectures and he knows how to give a good presentation. He was helpful and gave me a wealth of useful information. This is one of the best course I have taken.
Great profesor, especially for first-years, keeps it fun and light and you know when he is saying somethin important and when he is just straying off course (which is always fun).
Everyone loves Roman. Not a lot of readings and he is really funny... but beware if you hate swearing! Haha... He supposedly has a secret class... I'd like to take it.
He is one of the smartest profs in the fac. His professional experience is unparalleled. Easy to approach and very colloquial. He tends however to do his lectures on the fly and is fairly unorganized. His lectures are always interesting and often leads to intense and thought provoking discussion. Take him to learn, not if you just want the grade.
Roman is a professor in the true sense of the word. He is interested in sharing knowledge not just teaching so that you can write an exam or get a job. This is university is supposed to be about. For those of you who say that he goes off topic -- go to a technical school if all you want to do is pass an exam and get a certificate.
GREAT lecturer. If you have a chance to take a class with him, don't pass it up. He knows so much about EVERYTHING, it still blows my mind. He's got nteresting perspectives and will open your mind to knew ideas.
Roman KNOWS his stuff. CMNS110 is a introductory course and he really tries to give you the back ground knowledge of the study. His lectures are interesting. But all the grading just really depends on your TA. pray that you get a easy TA. Mine wasn't so easy compared to other TAs.

Awesome teacher! My favourite so far!! His lectures are extremely engaging and he knows his material, both related and unrelated to the course material. Really funny too...without trying!
Course wasn't hard. Everything was ok given that you actually read the parts of the textbook that are required for the assignment, presentation and the final paper. Prof likes to swear, apparently he's funny in lectures, but they're not worth going because they don't help you with your work at all.
Roman was super interesting! he sometimes went off on tangents unrelated to the course, but he kept you intrigued and he really knew what he was talking about. also, he was funny and was a no b.s kinda guy.
I am amazed at how much I learn from this guy. He intrigues me to no end. Wise guy! He must be the coolest prof I know! He knows his stuff, no bs! He has a different style of teaching though.
I had Roman for Comm 110 and 210 in 2008-2009 and the guy is still the best prof I've ever had. I went into Comm thinking it was going to be boring but he made it extremely FUN with his good humour and teaching style. Overall a great prof who knows his stuff but is willing to take in others' perspectives on issues; discussions were very engaging.
I've had Roman for CMNS 110&253 and he is one of the most interesting and knowledgeable profs around. His lectures are always interesting (although he can go off on a tangent and repeat things - but that can be pretty funny) and if you do your readings and attend most lectures his assignments and exams are very straightforward.
You really don't need to attend his lectures. Although they can be entertaining, and pretty interesting. If you read the parts of the textbook required for the assignments and exam and go to tutorials you'll do well, without even going to lecture.
I took the Power course in the previous terms and just took the Design course, which was a lot tougher. I learned more in these two courses than I did throughout most of my university career. An awesome prof. Highly recommended.
awesome prof, so much to be learned
Roman is brilliant. Going to his lectures is like therapy in that they are a work of art and speak to the human heart. He has taught me more about education, media, myth, society, and life than anyone ever will. I respect everything he teaches as he speaks to and from the heart.Very knowledgable, approachable and relatable. Highly recommend!!!!
Great prof!!! He is the reason I decided to minor in communications. Very helpful and easy to talk to. Lectures are very interesting and you can actually relate to them!!! Best prof in my all academic years!!!
witty and clever, makes all topics relatable. Inspired me to become a professor uses a method that encourages and requires your learning. No power points or notes online. GO to class, it's worth it,
I took cmns110 with him in Downtown, so we had 3hr lecture, and he talked straight for 3 hours, but it was actually really interesting and I learned a lot, not just dull facts, but practical concepts that relate to everyday situations.
a life changing experience... what else to say. i do not know who from cmns profs can measure up to roman...
If you haven't taken a class with Roman, you are missing out. Funny, totally scandalous in class, makes you WANT to come to class.
I have taken 8 classes with Roman and I am a huge fan. Not only is he an excellent prof, he always incorporates life into his material. Each lecture (even the 3 hr ones) were ones I looked forward to every week. He gave me insight to life and cmns at a whole new level!
This guy is a legend. I take classes with him whenever possible. Even though he retells the same stories over and over, he is easily the most knowledgeable, down to earth and entertaining prof you will ever have. He's an incredible speaker, which significantly lessens the work load since you're always engaged with the material. No pain, no pain!
I hate this prof, his tone is so low that I kept falling asleep during his lectures. His lectures are dry and he keeps on talking like non-stop. However, the TAs are helpful and their marking scheme are fair. I like the TA much more better than this boring prof.
I've taken CMNS 110, 210, and 354 with Roman. I had to say I learned a lot in 110 and 210, even though I always find the survey assignments to be on the tricky side as he is somewhat ambiguous in what he wants, but I always found him interesting. However, there is a point where his ambiguity and off-topic stories becomes a little too much.
Graet course - I took both the POwer and Seduction/Fashion section... What you learn will not help you much with your other cmns courses, but it will come in priceless later on in life... And make sure you attend seminars, they are short and sweet.
Extremely engaging prof, his lectures will never be boring! He really encourages self thinking, so the books we used for the semester don't make sense if you don't put in any effort with making the connections yourselves. Oh and there's an optional take home final--HELL YEAH!
he is willing to answer any question clearly, he gives a very fare assignmnt and mid-term, he explains the theories in a easier way so that students can undertand quite well.
I have taken CMNS 110, 210 and 354 with Roman. He is awesome. The mid-term is quite fair. I would definitely recommend his class.
Roman is by far the most engaging prof - he made lectures interesting and fun! It was the only lecture I actually looked forward to attending every week. He is a fair marker and he knows what he's talking about.
Roman is interesting, has clearly done a lot in his life. Drew complex material together in interesting ways. I took Power and Affect - best classes I've taken at SFU. Too bad they're not offered anymore! Very fun and casual. He appreciates intelligent students.
The Best.
You cant ask for a better prof!
Incredibly interesting professor, able to convey complex material clearly and assigns projects which are often useful in your portfolio. He is one of the few professors able to blend high-minded theory with practical output projects. He rules, hard.
What an amazing professor, wow. he is so funny. He is also a very fair and understanding professor. Very fair marker. Great grade distribution, readings are important but dead boring. The finals are sometimes optional, he is awesome.
